Ibiza Got Talent

Al igual que los grandes clubs de fútbol miman a su cantera, Rock Nights Magazine quiere echar un cable a las bandas locales ibicencas. Y qué mejor manera de hacerlo que entrevistando a seis de ellas: The Frigolos , Quin Delibat!, Uncle Sal, Ryser, Billy Flamingos y Windrose.

Pero la fama cuesta amigas, así que hemos decidido someter a estas jóvenes (y no tan jóvenes) promesas de la escena musical payesa a las cuestiones más temidas y odiadas por todo músico “amateur”. Esas cuatro preguntas a las que todo aspirante a Rock Star tiene que hacer frente en bodas, comuniones, nochebuenas y demás campos de batalla familiares:
1- ¿Pero hijo mío, de donde habéis sacado ese nombre tan extraño? 2- ¿Y esos amigos tuyos melenudos, de donde han salido? 3- ¿Cómo dices que se llama la música esa rarita que hacéis? 4- ¿Cuando vais a dejar de hacer el hippie y os vais a buscar un trabajo de verdad?
It surprises me to be asked a question with so opposing terms as hippie and work, but I’ll try to be concentrated and don’t get nervous. We’ll never stop playing, nor even if we have no idea about how to behave like a hippie.
QUIN DELIBAT!
Like the big football clubs pamper their reserve of young players, Rock Nights Magazine wants to give the Ibiza local bands a helping hand. And what better way to do this than interviewing six of them: The Frigolos, Quin Delibat!, Uncle Sal, Ryser, Billy Flamingos and Windrose.
But fame has a price, my friends, so we have decided to ask these young (and not so young) promises of the payesa (peasant) musical scene the most feared and hated questions by any “amateur” musician. The four questions every candidate to be a Rock Star has to face in weddings, First Communions, Christmas Eve days and any other family battlegrounds:
1- But where have you found that strange name, my son? 2- And those long-haired friends of yours, where do they come from? 3- How do you call that strange music you play? 4- When are you going to stop behaving like hippies and will look for a real job?
THE FRIGOLOS
1. Creo recordar que no estaba en plenitud de condiciones mentales, pero ahora mismo no quiero hurgar en el pasado. Puede que haya niños leyendo esto.
I think I remember I was a bit mentally disturbed at that moment, but right now I don’t want to dwell on the past. There may be children reading this.
2. Quita, quita, no tengo de eso. Ante todo limpieza, higiene y disciplina. Ya no tenemos edad para correr riesgo de contagios piojiles. Que yo sepa, no se comercializa gomina para hippies.
No, no, we don’t have long hair. Above all, cleanness, hygiene and discipline. We aren’t of an age to run the risk of getting louses. As far as I know, there’s no hair gel for hippies on the market.
3. Rock and Roll. Si, ya sé que suena raro y es difícil de pronunciar, pero es un nuevo estilo que está pegando fuerte (incluso más que la Cumbia) y nos hemos apuntado al carro. Valientes somos...
Rock and Roll. Yes, I know it sounds odd and it’s difficult to pronounce, but it’s a new style that it’s going ahead (even more than the Cumbia) and we have got on board. We are brave…
1. Queríamos caerle bien al robot de búsquedas de Google. Y que no lo entendiese casi ningún humano.
We wanted to be liked by Google searching engine. And that almost no human being could understand it.
2.¿Por qué lo preguntas? ¿Qué han hecho? Yo no los conozco de nada. De hecho, es la primera vez que los veo.
Why do you ask? What have they done? I don’t know them at all. Indeed, this is the first time I see them.
3. Hacemos brit-pop sin acento británico y cantamos sobre Tinder, sobre los viajes espaciales y sobre ligar con marcianos.
We play brit-pop without British accent and we sing about Tinder, about space travels and about pulling with Martians.
4. Uf, es que los trabajos de verdad están muy mal pagados…
Phew! Real jobs are really underpaid…
UNCLE SAL
1. Es un juego de palabras con Uncle Sam que como sabes representa a los USA y Sal, que es como me llaman algunos amigos desde hace mucho tiempo.
It’s a play on words with Uncle Sam that, as you know, represents the USA, and Sal, that is how some friends call me for a long time.
3. Puedes llamarlo blues rock, rock and roll, boogie, música americana de raíces... lo que es seguro es que efectivamente, para Ibiza es una música rarita.
You can call it blues rock ¿aquí en medio va una coma?, rock and roll, boogie, American roots music… what’s sure is that, indeed, it’s a bit odd for Ibiza.
4. La idea la contraria! Poder dejar los trabajos de verdad y pasar el resto de nuestros días haciendo el hippy o el hillbilly. Hace tiempo tocábamos una canción de Champion Jack Dupree que decía: “I’d love to be a hippy, but my hair won’t grow that long...”.
The opposite idea! To be able to leave real jobs and spend the rest of our days behaving like hippies or doing the hillbilly. Some time ago we played a song by Champion Jack Dupree that says: “I’d love to be a hippy, but my hair won’t grow that long...”.
RYSER
Our name was the least bad of the proposed names… We were going to call ourselves Hot Manoli in honour of our favourite waitress, but at the end that couldn’t be and we opted for Billy Flamingos. Over time indeed we love it.
2. Nos conocimos en la época preadolescente así que imagino que lo del vello púbico, el escroto hinchado y la melenas vino después. Todos venimos de proyectos anteriores y no fue hasta el año pasado que formamos la banda.
We met in our pre-adolescent age so I guess that all about the pubic hair, the swollen scrotum and the long hairs came later. We all come from previous projects and we created this band last year.
3. Rock’n’roll sin aditivos para huidos del bosque. Como en Ibiza la gente es muy del rollo eco, les gustan mucho nuestras canciones. Es una mezcla de Far West, máquinas tragaperras, colonia Brumel y whisky solo. Algo directo, sincero y sin maquillaje.
Rock’n’roll without additives for those who have escaped from the forest. As in Ibiza people like the eco style, they like our songs very much. It’s a mixture of Far West, slot machines, Brumel eau de Cologne and whisky neat. Something direct, sincere and without makeup.
4. Nos daremos hasta los 40 para buscar un trabajo de verdad, para dejar de hacer el hippy seguramente tardaremos un poco más. En caso contrario compraremos un terreno en Nicaragua y montaremos una empresa de exportación de aceite hidratante de coco, siempre eco por supuesto.
We’ll wait until we’re 40 to look for a real job, to stop behaving like hippies probably we’ll take a bit longer. On the contrary we’ll but a piece of land in Nicaragua and we’ll establish an export company to sell moisturizing coconut oil, always eco, of course.
1. Sale del nombre y apellidos del cantante y líder de la banda. Los apellidos protegen al nombre y crean un ser, “RYSER” (Ruíz Yeshe Steane + ser).
It comes from the name and surnames of the singer and bandleader. The surnames protect the name and create a ser (being), “RYSER” (Ruíz Yeshe Steane + ser).
2. Jameando y sólo a uno de ellos le dejamos lucir la melena.
Jamming, and we only let that one of them shows off his long hair.
4. Para qué ser esclavos cuando nos pagan por ser hippies.
Why being slaves when we’re paid for being hippies?
WINDROSE
BILLY FLAMINGOS
1. Significa rosa de los vientos. Si te cuesta pronunciarlo podemos ayudarte con ejercicios de foniatría. Repite conmigo: WI ND RO SE

2. ¡No sabíamos que el peinado era tan importante! Realmente no tenemos amigos melenudos, a estas edades casi todos se están quedando calvos.
We didn’t know that hairstyle was so important! Indeed we don’t have long-haired friends, at this age almost all of them are going bald.
3. Hacemos versiones de rock... ROCK, ese raro estilo que había antes del punchi punchi y el perreo.
We play rock versions… ROCK, that strange style that existed before the punchi punchi and the perreo.
4. Vaya pregunta! Nos gusta mucho lo que hacemos, la música por placer. No planeamos retirarnos al lado oscuro de la vida.
What a question! We really like what we do: music for fun. We don’t plan to move away to the dark side of life.
