Hinda receives a call from Michoel, telling her he is in an unknown hospital, with amnesia following an accident, but that the hospital staff does not want to speak with his family.

Becky hears that the investigator suspects Mike of having anorexia.

CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN

“Mali!” Chani stood at the open door, gaping at her sister in such shock that Mali started laughing.

“What’s the matter, Chani? Aren’t you going to let me in?”

“Of course I'll let you in!” Chani moved aside, and Mali stepped into the tiny hallway of the apartment. Immediately, she dashed right over to little Bracha’s cradle.

“I haven’t seen her in so long!” she exclaimed as she picked Bracha up. The baby burst into wails of protest. “Hey!” Mali pretended to be offended—or perhaps it was genuine. “Are you crying because your aunt picked you up?!”

“If her aunt would come by a little more often, she would recognize her and wouldn’t cry when you pick her up,” Chani said as she patted Mali’s shoulder and took her baby with the other hand. “So, maybe you can clue me in on why we have the privilege of a visit? I don’t think you’ve been here since Bracha was three

weeks old.”

“We had a photography project at the National Park,” Mali said, stroking her niece's cheek. Bracha was now studying her with big eyes. “I decided that if I’m so close to Bnei Brak already, why shouldn’t I pop in for a visit?”

“Great!” Chani smiled and walked over to the counter. “So tell me, how are you doing?”

“Baruch Hashem, amazing.”

“How’s the freedom?”

“Fantastic. We’re nine girls in the dorm, and there’s something special about it…”

“And you don’t sometimes feel an urge to go home a bit?”

“No, and please don’t talk to me about it. Even Baruch went to Avigdor’s.”

“But he came home for Shabbos twice already.”

“Right. And I didn’t.”

Chani decided that it would be wise to change the subject. “Sit down, and I’ll get you a piece of cake. You’ll take ice cream also, right? I have pistachio.”

“I won’t object,” Mali said with a laugh. She put down her gray handbag on the table. There was a big fur pompom hanging from it, and next to it was a framed picture. Chani was curious to see who was in the picture, but at the angle that Mali had placed the bag, she could not see who it was.

“What’s going on by you?” Mali asked, after Chani had sat down.

“Baruch Hashem, we're fine.”

“Have you spoken to Ima recently?” Mali dug her spoon into the cup of ice cream.

“Yes, the day before yesterday.”

“How did she sound?”

“Fine. A little bit worried, maybe. She said something about Michoel and that she’s nervous about him…”

“Right. I spoke to her yesterday, and she told me that he had called her. You know I went to his house in Yerushalayim once?”

Chani raised an eyebrow. "When?"

Mali chuckled. “Not five years ago; about a month ago. I met Ima at the Kosel and told her about it. She didn’t tell you anything?”

“No.” Chani looked at her cup of ice cream but didn’t touch it. “Ima’s been very busy lately, and I don’t pry too much. So sometimes I think that by the time we speak, she doesn’t remember to tell me the interesting things that happened to her.”

“It wasn’t so interesting,” her younger sister consoled her. “We met by chance at the Kosel, and then we went to Michoel’s house together, but he didn’t open the door for us. And there was some strange stuff going on…”

“Like what?”

Mali took a slice of cake from the center plate. “Forget it, the whole thing got cleared up, and by now Ima realizes that all those strange stuff were nonsense and misunderstandings. The problem is that this afternoon, I spoke to her again, and she sounded more worried than I’ve heard her sound in a long time.”

It’s nice to hear that you're so worried about Ima, Chani wanted to say, but she kept her opinion to herself. “Worried?” she repeated.

“Yes. Because of Yosef.”

“Yosef?!” Chani’s hand stiffened for a moment. Bracha, sitting on her lap, shifted uncomfortably. Chani studied her sister for a moment before asking, “Why? What’s with Yosef?”

“You know I don’t like talking about him.” Mali pressed her lips together. “But Ima sounded so bad that I asked her if everything was alright. And she said that he had returned from work earlier than usual today, and was lying in bed and not speaking to anyone.”

“Is that a…deterioration of sorts?” Chani asked. Neither of them knew enough about their brother’s condition on a day-to-day level to figure out what this

meant.

“If Ima is worried, I guess so.”

“Poor her,” Chani murmured.

“It might also ruin things for her,” Mali blurted after a minute.

“Ruin?” Chani smiled bitterly. “Please. She’s not in shidduchim anymore.”

“That's exactly what might ruin things. I think—" She swallowed. “I think that things are going very well for her right now, baruch Hashem… And I don’t want her husband to get nervous from Yosef…”

Like you got nervous from him. And then you left, Chani wanted to say. But again, she didn’t say a word. Three full minutes of silence passed between the sisters. “I think that all we can do is daven,” Chani finally said. “For Yosef, and for Ima.”

“I thought you might want to call her,” Mali said. She studied her shoes and then added, “Also… I can’t do it, but maybe you…maybe you can invite Yosef over for a bit? Get him out of the house a little for Ima?”

Chani raised her eyebrows. "Here?" she said, looking pointedly around. “When I move to my own apartment, Mali, there’s a chance. But as long as we're here—" She motioned to the bedroom door across from the table. “Where in this tiny unit could I stuff him in, do you think?”

Mali was quiet.

“I'll call Ima in any case.” Chani stared at the ice cream in her cup; it was turning into an ugly green mess. “Maybe she'll want to talk; maybe it can help her. Even though lately…” She stole a glance at Mali and saw her own reflection in her sister’s eyes. “I’m feeling more and more that her life is busy enough even without me.”

“And I’m feeling that suddenly, there’s more room for me.”

Chani would have wanted to point out that there had always been room for Mali, but after her own somewhat pitiful statement, she realized it would sound foolish. Again, all she could do was remain silent. ***

“Yosef?”

Now Dov was trying. He closed the door to the room behind him and pulled up the stool next to the bed. The lump wrapped in blankets did not move, but for some reason, Dov had the distinct feeling that Yosef was very awake.

“Your mother is worried about you, Yosef,” he said in a low tone. “And so am I. You’re acting differently than usual, and we’re afraid something happened to you.” A muffled voice was heard from under the blanket. "That’s right.”

Dov leaned his palm on the wall. “Were you injured?” he asked, looking at the two vials of pills on the nightstand. Hinda had tried to find out from her son if he’d taken his medications as usual, but hadn’t gotten an answer. It would be a mistake for him to try that direction as well. “Did you fall? Did you catch something at the hospital?”

Silence. He wondered if he should try to feel for Yosef’s shoulder through the thick woolen blanket. At least the air conditioner was on the in the room. “You usually look very cheerful, Yosef. You also came home early today.”

“I know!” the lump under the blanket snapped.

“What do you know, that usually you are happier, or that you came home earlier than usual?”

He wondered if Yosef might answer, "That you’re a nudnik," but he knew there was no chance of such a witty answer. Two long moments passed, and then another three, and he added, “I’m bringing you a cup of cold water, Yosef, alright? I think that a cool drink will refresh you, before anything else.”

He left the room and closed the door, thanking Hashem that Simi and her husband had left already. He would not want them to witness this situation. For Yosef’s dignity, and for Hinda’s—and for a few other reasons.

“He’s not apathetic at all,” he told Hinda, who came toward him with a worried expression. “And it’s true that I don’t know much about this, but it seems to me like he’s just in a bad mood.”

“I can’t take the risk,” she responded quietly. “Yosef is not a regular boy. A bad mood is not something I can allow him to wallow in.”

“Right,” Dov agreed, wondering what she planned to do. Call emergency mental health services?

“The fact that he’s not apathetic is an encouraging sign,” she said, her voice hoarse. As she spoke, she turned her head toward the front door, where someone had started knocking.

“Martin,” Dov said, pursing his lips. “I will tell him the truth.”

“Which truth?”

“That we are preoccupied now with a serious matter, and I cannot speak to him right now.”

Hinda went over to the door of Yosef’s room and opened it wide. She did not even try to listen to the conversation taking place at the front door. “Yosef!” she said loudly. “Yosef, I am asking you to get up and answer me. Don’t leave me worried like this, please. Are you feeling okay? It doesn’t look like it. What is happening? What happened?”

She didn’t get an answer. Dov walked up behind her with a cup of water that had two ice cubes floating in it. “I promised him cold water. Yosef, get up and drink, please. You’ll see you’ll feel better afterward.”

“Why do I have to feel better?” The lump of blankets was thrashing about. Suddenly, a chess board was tossed out, and Yosef’s balled fist also emerged, scattering black and white pieces on the floor of the room. “He died! He really died! The man who was the nicest to me these past two days! His chess set also has to die! Why should I feel good? What for?”

“Who died? The man who gave you the chess set?”

“Yes—Yaakov I-don't-remember-his-last-name!” Yosef’s voice was hoarse, and his face wasn’t visible. “We played chess together. I went to visit him in his ward. True, he kept coughing, but so what! I also cough sometimes, and I don’t die from it! You don’t ever cough, Ima? You never cough, Dov? Why did he die? Why?”

“Yosef, first of all, please take a drink.” Dov’s voice was very stable. “If you want, we’ll talk about death after that. It’s a very complicated subject in Hashem’s world… But it’s not possible to speak about complicated subjects when we’re buried under a mound of blankets, without a drop of air or water.”

“And where do you think they are going to put Yaakov? Deep in the ground, where there's also not a drop of air or water!”

“But you are alive, baruch Hashem, Yosef, until 120,” Hinda said. She sat down on the chair and looked at the mound of blankets writhing constantly on the bed.

“And anyone who is given life by Hashem—has to take care of himself.”

He didn’t respond. The blankets stopped moving, but his head did not appear, and the cup of ice water remained full in Dov’s hand.

Sulfur Consumption Reduces Risk of Death

AT-A-GLANCE

· A large epidemiological study found people who took glucosamine supplements daily had a reduced overall mortality to the degree that is conferred by regular exercise

· One contributing factor may be the sulfate in the supplement. Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, calls sulfur an "unappreciated deficiency" and proposes it may be central to heart disease, muscle wasting and altered glucose metabolism

· Bone broth and Epsom salt baths are simple and effective strategies to naturally boost your sulfur levels; each also has other health benefits

· Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur donor widely used in the treatment of arthritic pain and known to reduce inflammation, balance reactive oxygen species and modulate your immune response

Sulfur is in the top three abundant minerals found in the human body and the topic of the interview with Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a documentary. An epidemiological study from West Virginia University found glucosamine sulfate supplements may lower overall mortality as much as regular exercise. The underlying mechanism may be related to sulfur.

If you've ever smelled sulfur gas when it comes up from well water, you won't forget the smell of rotten eggs. In fact, the natural gas industry adds mercaptan, a component of sulfur, to natural gas — which has no odor — to make it smell like rotten eggs so you can detect a natural gas leak.

While stinky in gas form, sulfur is an important mineral in the optimal function of your body. Interestingly, you'll get most of your sulfur from specific amino acids, including methionine, cysteine, cystine, homocysteine, homocysteine and taurine. Of these, the two most important are methionine and cysteine. Methionine is an essential amino acid, which means your body can’t synthesize it so it must be supplied through your diet.

Your body can make cysteine from methionine but not from inorganic forms of sulfur. Some individuals are allergic to sulfa drugs and may have concerns about eating sulfur-containing foods. However, since sulfur is an essential element to life, no one is allergic to sulfur. When a sulfonamide molecule from sulfa drugs is metabolized it can bind to a protein that serves as an allergen.

The sulfonamide molecule in sulfa drugs does have sulfur, but it is embedded in a compound with the unique property of being able to form proteins that cause an allergic reaction in some people. Glucosamine, the subject of the featured publication, is an amino acid that is often combined with sulfate and not known

to trigger allergic reactions from the sulfate.

However, most glucosamine supplements are derived from shellfish, which is not kosher, and there is some concern of an allergic reaction in people who have an allergy to shellfish. There are several forms of glucosamine supplements that are not interchangeable.

They include glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and n-acetyl glucosamine. Glucosamine sulfate is what is used to help painful arthritis and was the focus of this study.

Study: Glucosamine/ Chondroitin Lowers All-Cause Mortality

In an epidemiological study released from West Virginia University, researchers found that individuals using glucosamine supplements had reduced overall mortality to the degree conferred by regular exercise. The first author, Dana King, is chair of the department of family medicine at West Virginia University.

He and his partner, a data analyst, evaluated information from 16,686 adults who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The results were from 1999 to 2010 and the data was merged with 2015 mortality figures.

The researchers controlled for a variety of confounding factors, such as age, activity level and smoking status, and found those taking a glucosamine/ chondroitin supplement each day for at least a year or longer had a 39% reduced potential of all-cause mortality and a 65% reduction in mortality from cardiovascular-related events.

King shared that his interest in glucosamine and chondroitin began when he learned many of the cyclists he rode with on weekends used the supplement. King points out that the

data are from an epidemiological study and not a clinical trial so it can’t conclusively demonstrate that death is less likely, but goes on to comment:

“Does this mean that if you get off work at five o’clock one day, you should just skip the gym, take a glucosamine pill and go home instead? That’s not what we suggest. Keep exercising, but the thought that taking a pill would also be beneficial is intriguing.

Once we took everything into account, the impact was pretty significant. In our view, it’s important that people know about this, so they can discuss the findings with their doctor and make an informed choice. Glucosamine is over the counter, so it is readily available.”

The results of this study support previous research published in the BMJ in which researchers engaged 466,039 participants without cardiovascular disease to determine if there was an association between glucosamine use and a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease.

After adjusting for confounding factors, such as age, body mass index, dietary intake, drug use, researchers found there was a “significantly lower risk” of 9% to 22% of all outcome measures.

The outcome measures included cardiovascular disease events, coronary heart disease and stroke in people who used glucosamine supplements daily. The researchers found that their findings supported past studies that had demonstrated an inverse relationship between glucosamine supplementation and cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.

Interestingly, they also found those taking glucosamine and who were current smokers experienced reductions in cardiovascular disease greater than in those who were past smokers or never smokers. They theorized this

was because smokers have a higher level of inflammation and glucosamine is associated with a reduction in C-reactive protein, a marker for systemic inflammation.

Sulfur Deficiency May Contribute to Multiple Conditions

An opinion piece that ran in the same publication points out that the sulfate in glucosamine sulfate supplements, which make up “most glucosamine products available on the market,” may have been a contributing factor as it satisfies a potential sulfur deficiency.

One study analyzing how much sulfur is available in the diet concluded “a significant portion of the population that included disproportionately the aged, may not be receiving sufficient sulfur.” Scientists are aware that nutrient deficiencies can produce significant health problems.

In one paper in the Journal of the American Heart Association the writers said: “Micronutrients are necessary cofactors for normal cardiac metabolism, and deficiencies have been implicated in the development and progression of HF [heart failure].

Seneff and her team proposed the hypothesis that atherosclerosis is the result of a cholesterol sulfate deficiency. They proposed that atherosclerosis can be explained by the body using plaque to replenish cholesterol and sulfate to the microvasculature. They argue that insufficient sulfate may increase the risk of high blood pressure and blood clot formation.

Seneff calls sulfur an “unappreciated deficiency” since it is found in several foods and most assume that your diet meets your minimum daily requirements. Excellent food sources include eggs, garlic, onions and green leafy vegetables. Nuts, grass fed meat and seafood also contain sulfur.

However, a depletion in the soil creates a deficiency in your fruits and vegetables and may contribute, in part, to sulfur deficiency. She theorizes that a sulfur deficiency is related to rising obesity rates and is connected to glucose metabolism and cardiovascular disease.

In her research, she found people who experience muscle wasting from diseases such as cancer, HIV, sepsis, irritable bowel disease and athletic overtraining may be the result of a deficiency in cysteine and glutathione, two amino acids with sulfur molecules.

MSM Is a Powerful Sulfur Supplement

Sulfur can be found in your muscles, skin and bones. It helps with fat digestion, is needed to make bile acid and required to form collagen. The element plays important roles in hundreds of physiological processes. For example, sulfur bonds are needed for proteins to maintain their shape and they determine the biological activity of the protein.

Hair and nails are made of a tough protein called keratin, which is high in sulfur, whereas connective tissue and cartilage have protein with flexible sulfur bonds. In addition to proteins, sulfur is also required for the proper structure and biological activity of enzymes.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur donor and contains 34% elemental sulfur by weight. Many of the benefits of supplementing with msm are related to the compound's ability to reduce inflammation, regulate the balance of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzymes, and modulate your immune response. It is widely used in the treatment of pain, especially pain associated with arthritis.

In one clinical trial, researchers found people with osteoarthritis of the knee who took three grams of MSM twice a day for 12 weeks experienced a significant reduction in pain and improvement in physical function, as compared to those who took the placebo.

In another randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study, data showed participants with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis experienced an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect when given oral glucosamine and MSM, both individually and in combination.

In this study, the treatment groups received 500 milligrams (mg) of glucosamine and/or 500 mg of MSM three times a day for 12 weeks. According to the authors:

“Combination therapy showed better efficacy in reducing pain and swelling and in improving the functional ability of joints than the individual agents.

All the treatments were well tolerated. The onset of analgesic and antiinflammatory activity was found to be more rapid with the combination than with glucosamine. It can be concluded that the combination of MSM with glucosamine provides better and more rapid improvement in patients with osteoarthritis."

The Benefits of Bone Broth and Epsom Salts

In addition to food and MSM supplementation, you may also absorb sulfur from homemade bone broth or a relaxing soak in a warm Epsom salt bath. As we have written in the past, bone broth contains other valuable minerals that your body can easily absorb in use, including magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, silicon, sulfur chondroitin and glucosamine.

Bone broth also helps attract and hold liquids in the digestive system and

supports proper digestion. In one study, researchers found that chicken soup has medicinal qualities and significantly mitigated inflammation and infection. The amino acids in bone broth helps to fight inflammation and courtesy of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, it helps to reduce joint pain and inflammation.

Bone broth is made from animal bones. It's important to use homemade bone broth since the store-bought variety is produced by adding chemicalladen bouillon cubes, whereas traditional soups are made by cooking bones and meat for several hours. In its simplest form, it's made by using bones, vinegar and spices, and simmering in a pot or slow cooker for as long as 24 to 72 hours.

Bone broth made over longer periods of time increases the release of gelatin, minerals and other nutrients from the bones, which are key to many of the benefits and restorative properties.

Epsom salt baths are a simple way of absorbing both magnesium and sulfate. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, which is easily absorbed through your skin. It is also a preferable way of absorbing magnesium and sulfate since it's readily available to your body without having to be converted as it is when taken orally.

As a general recommendation, use 1 to 2 cups of Epsom salt in a tub of water. The warmer the water, the more the salt will dissolve and the more your body will be able to absorb it.

Some people may experience a negative reaction, such as irritability or hyperactivity. In this case, decrease the amount you use and incrementally raise it based on your tolerance. Alternatively, make a foot bath of one part Epsom salt to two parts water and soak your feet for about 30 minutes.

ALactose is a type of sugar found in milk products. Some people are unable to digest it properly, leading to unpleasant digestive symptoms after eating dairy. People with lactose intolerance experience digestive problems when they consume dairy, which can negatively affect their quality of life. These symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, and stomach pains. Several types of lactose intolerance exist, and they may be caused by different factors. However, all lactose intolerance is characterized by a deficiency in the enzyme lactase. Lactose is found in mother's milk, and almost everyone is born with the ability to digest it. However, you can develop lactose intolerance at any age, even well into adulthood.

You can be diagnosed as lactose intolerant in a few ways. Here are some:

• Hydrogen breath test-This test measures hydrogen in your breath after eating dairy.

• Stool acidity test-Often used for babies and infants, this test measures stool acid levels, which have a lower pH in cases of lactose intolerance.

• Lactose tolerance testThis test measures your blood sugar after lactose ingestion. If you have lactose

intolerance, your blood sugar levels won’t be affected because your body can’t break down lactose.

• You can also do an elimination test by yourself if you think you have lactose intolerance. To do it, eliminate lactose completely from your diet for at least 2 weeks, (not even a splash of milk in your coffee!) then reintroduce dairy to see whether you experience any digestive symptoms.

People with lactose intolerance may need to reduce or eliminate their dairy intake, potentially depriving them of key nutrients like calcium. Dairy foods are excellent sources of calcium, but eating dairy isn’t critical for your health. You can follow a very healthy diet without dairy — as long as you eat other foods that are high in calcium. Some non-dairy sources would be calcium-fortified foods like bread, almond milk, or oat milk. Fish also contains calcium, specifically those with bones such as sardines, and salmon. You can also get a lot of calcium from eating veggies and greens such as kale and broccoli. If you don’t want to give up dairy, a few natural treatments may alleviate lactose intolerance. You can try taking Enzyme supplements that you can buy in your local health store. These enzymes

may help your body digest lactose. Also, if you are lactose intolerant, exposing yourself to lactose regularly, may help your body adapt to it. Through regular lactose exposure, your gut microbiota may be able to produce enough lactase on its own to ease lactose intolerance symptoms. Consistency is key with this method, and high fat milk like whole milk may be the best choice because your body digests it more slowly, potentially giving your gut bacteria more time to digest the lactose. Try this with your doctor’s guidance and help, so that you do this correctly. Probiotics and prebiotics can be helpful here as well. Probiotics are microorganisms that provide health benefits, while prebiotics are types of fiber that function as food for these microorganisms, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Both probiotics and prebiotics have been shown to reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance. Some types of probiotics and prebiotics may be more effective than others. This may seem to be overwhelming, however, the kosher industry has come a very long way. We can almost live perfect satisfying lives without dairy. Dairy as a whole can be a controversial topic. Getting off dairy has helped a lot of people achieve many health goals and there may be a silver lining to this condition.

Breakfast On-the-Go

Mishloach Manos Setup:

• Nutty Cinnamon Babka Buns - see recipe

• Square bakeable tins with lids (Amazon.com)

• 20x20” Linen napkins

• Twine (Amazon.com)

• Disposable wooden spoons (Amazon.com)

• Cinnamon sticks

• Small liquors

• Coffee packets

CREAM CHEESE RUM FROSTING

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

1- 8 oz gray box cream cheese

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

¾ teaspoon rum extract (omit, if you don’t like the flavor)

Candied pecans, ground cinnamon, or cinnamon sticks- for garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

1. In the bowl of a standing mixer- fitted with a paddle attachment, combine all the frosting ingredients. Cream until smooth.

2. Pipe frosting on top of the cooled cinnamon buns. Garnish to your liking. Close the lids of the bakeable tins and freeze until ready to use.

Gooey, cinnamon flavored, and delicious, these babkas are a hybrid between the classic cinnamon bun and monkey nut bread. Finished off with a Purim-inspired, rum frosting, they make the ultimate breakfast treat.

Yield: Around 15 Babka Buns

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup warm milk (you can mix ¾ cup milk with ¼ cup boiling water)

2 ½ tablespoons yeast

4 ½ cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup sugar (minus 1 tablespoon)

2 eggs

1 stick butter

Melted butter or oil

2 cups brown sugar

4 tablespoons cinnamon

2 tablespoons instant vanilla pudding

¾ cup chopped walnuts

¾ cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a small bowl combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let rest for about 1-2 minutes until foamy.

2. In the bowl of a standing mixer- fitted with a paddle attachment, add the flour, salt, sugar, eggs, butter, and yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

3. Set dough aside, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.

4. Preheat oven to 350° and grease your square tins with cooking spray.

5. Lightly flour your work surface and divide the dough into 2 balls. Roll out each ball into a large 16 x 8 rectangle and spread melted butter or oil on top.

6. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, instant vanilla pudding, chopped walnuts, and pecans, and sprinkle half of the mixture over each greased dough.

7. Starting from the wider side of the rectangle, tightly roll up the dough. Slice into ¾ inch buns and place 4 pieces into each square tin.

8. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown (try one bun to taste for doneness). Remove from the oven and let cool. Finish with frosting-see recipe.

NOTE: Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

ZESTY GREEN GUACAMOLE

Your classic with a kick, the secret to this guacamole’s gorgeous hue is lots of lime juice and a hint of food coloring (shh..)

INGREDIENTS:

3-4 Medium, ripe avocados

½ large purple onion

1 medium, ripe tomato

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded

1 tablespoon table salt

⅛ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 limes, juiced

Drop of green food coloring (optional to retain color)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Using a fork, roughly mash the avocados (don’t over mash).

2. Chop the purple onion, tomato, and jalapeno pepper and add to the mashed avocado.

3. Season with salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and add the lime juice and food coloring. Mix with fork until combined. Taste, and add more salt and lime juice as needed. Divide into individual containers or jars before serving.

SPICY SUNDRIED SALSA

The deep, umami flavor of the sundried tomatoes adds a special deep flavor to this delicious salsa.

INGREDIENTS:

3 medium, ripe tomatoes

4-6 pcs. Tuscannini sundried tomatoes

¼ white onion

1 clove garlic

1 jalapeno

1 lime

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon table salt

1-2 frozen cubes chopped cilantro (or about 1 cup freshly chopped)

DIRECTIONS:

In a food processor, fitted with the blender attachment, blend all ingredients until coarsely chopped (you can pulse until your desired texture). Taste, then season with additional salt or lime juice.

GOURMET FRUIT & NUT CRACKERS

Yield: about 5-6 dozen crackers

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 container Yumtee cranberry pistachio mix

¼ cup whole flax seeds

¼ cup packed brown sugar

¾ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 cup almond milk

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat oven to 350° and generously grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix with a fork until smooth. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.

3. Bake for 50 minutes until golden brown. Let cool completely and freeze for about 1 hour (not more than 3 hours).

4. Heat oven to 400° and remove loaf from pan. Use a sharp serrated knife to cut into 1/8” thick slices. Arrange slices in a single layer on 2 lined baking sheets. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown, flipping halfway through baking.

NOTE: Freeze in a ziploc bag, or store at room temperature in airtight container, for up to 1 week.

The naturally occurring trans-fat in kosher animals is not considered unhealthy, in moderation. In fact, these natural fats are linked to various health benefits. Beware of highly processed meats such as cold cuts and commercial beef jerky, since the processing renders them unhealthy. Eating meat (and other animal derived proteins) is of particular benefit for growth and maintenance of the body.

SIMPLE BEEF JERKY

INGREDIENTS:

London broil (lean), thinly sliced*

Prima Mr. Flavor spice

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 170°. Place a cooling rack on a cookie sheet. Spread the meat slices, single layer, on cooling rack. Lightly spice meat. Bake 3 hours, uncovered.

*ask butcher to slice meat for jerky

Recap: Mrs. Chava Kaplan receives a strange phone call. Tehilla Kaplan realizes that someone is spreading bad information about her. When she tells her mother, her mother collapses on the floor.

CHAPTER TWO:

“So girls,” Mrs. Hess began, her blue eyes shining. I looked up from my doodled paper and wondered again what I was doing here in school.

“I want you to tell me what comes to mind when I say the word Tznius.” I sighed and leaned back in the hard plastic chair. I could feel the onset of a headache. This was going to be a long day. The voices swirled in the background as Mrs. Hess began to fill the board with words like “four inches”, “short skirts”, “rulers”, and “rules”. A strange surge of anger shook me awake. It was something I had never felt before, a rushing tide of self-righteous fury that overtook my entire being. Here I was, sitting in a classroom filled with girls who were leading peaceful, ordinary lives, discussing small issues that they had with keeping hilchos tznius, and just going about their day with the natural aplomb of an eighth grade student. While my world had just fallen apart. In my mind, a thousand shards of glass had just scattered throughout my little world, leaving room for nothing but fear.

“I think Tznius is about love of Hashem,” I could hardly believe this was me speaking. Mrs. Hess raised her eyebrow. “When you give up a piece of yourself, you are doing it for Hashem, not for anyone else. So that shows true love,” I forged on in a choked voice. An awkward silence fell over the room. Mrs. Hess looked unsure for a moment, but quickly composed herself.

“Girls,” she began. We all looked up. “I need to re-introduce this topic and what these classes will be all about. This class is all about being real, honest, and open. If you feel that way, Tehilla, that is beautiful and inspiring. Everyone is welcome to share their thoughts.”

I wasn’t fooled. For some reason, she had listed every answer that my classmates had supplied on the white board in front of us, but mine remained hanging mid-air. She never wrote my words on the board. ***

Chava stared up at the white ceiling. She was trapped in a world of white and gliding tables. The anti-septic smell had long stopped annoying her- this was her new home. For now.

“It will just be a short stay,” her husband had insisted. “We just need to check out what happened.”

She had weakly tried to protest, she had a whole family to care for! But the paramedics whisked her away. When she tried to ask for details, the words came out in a scary warble. That’s when she realized that something had happened- something potentially fatal. That’s when she realized she had to be grateful to be alive.

Heavy footsteps sounded behind me. I picked up pace.

“Tehilla!! Wait!”

Before I knew it, Huva was there, like every day, face flushed and panting.

“Why didn’t you wait for me? Are you trying to give me some extra exercise?” her red curls bounced as she laughed. I remained silent and walked on.

“Uh…Tehilla?”

With no response forthcoming, she continued, “Why are you acting so strange with Mrs. Hess? I mean, it is nice to be holy and all, but most of us aren’t up to there yet! So why bring it up?”

I halted mid-step and turned to face Huva.

“Huva, do you really want to know why?” There was a heartbeat of silence before I said, “I am sure that not. Right now, there is no better way to tell you this. Ahuva Sternhill, I regret the moment we linked arms and proclaimed to be friends forever. I regret the secrets and struggles that I ever shared with you. I regret the day I decided that you are a friend worthy of my trust.” My breath came out in spurts. I didn’t wait for her response. I fled. Wind rushed through my soft blond hair, the wisps blocking my vision. There was just no stopping the adrenaline that grabbed rein of my heart and soul. The past six years of my life had been one big lie.

It was time Huva realized that the lie was over. ***

“Tehilla?” The voice that flooded the wires was hoarse and slurred. I blinked back a sudden tear.

“Ma?”

“How arrre yyou?”

“Baruch Hashem. I mean, I had a good day, I just can’t stop worrying! Are you okay?”

This sudden switch around was jarring. It was always Ma hovering over me and making sure that I was happy and welltaken care of. Here I was, with a full household on my fragile shoulders, a sickly mother on my tired brain, and a forever friendship put to a sudden end.

“Tehhilla? You tthhere?”

I nodded into the phone. “Yes, Ma. I was just worrying about you. What do they say it is?”

Ta walked into the room and frantically motioned no.

“Uh, Ma? Whatever. Just rest up, everything is under control. I made supper and Moti is happy. Chayaleh was very happy at the neighbor until I came home from school and we are all doing great.”

I could hear the sigh of relief.

“Yyyou are a ggem. Love you!” Ma eked out. She breathed heavily.

“I am going to go now, sssweetie. H...hang in there!” I heard the dial tone and stared at the phone. Sweetie? That was so unMa like. So was laying helpless on a cot in a hospital with some unknown disease. So was slurring and talking to me like a stranger on the street.

“Ta? We need to talk.” These famous fearinspiring words.

I had just donned the coat of adulthood. And I didn’t like it one bit. ***

Ahuva clicked her golden necklace open and stared at the image inside for a few minutes. Gently clicking it shut, she heard her mother’s soft footfall.

“Huvs? Dinner is waiting!”

The aroma of cooking food wafted into her room. Her stomach growled, but she ignored it.

“Ahuva? You okay?” Her mother was closer now.

Ahuva jumped. “Coming,” she whispered, and flung the door open.

“I’ll be goin’ now, hon,” Mrs. Sternstein blew her daughter a kiss.

Ahuva ignored the kiss and trudged into the kitchen as she heard the door slam shut.

“Did the potatoes do anything to you?” Pori teased. Ahuva remained silent. “C’mon, what on earth has got you looking so sad?” she pressed.

Ahuva’s eyes glazed over. “I…can’t talk about it.”

“What does that mean?”

“That I cannot tell you what is bothering me. Doing so would be digging deeper into the hole that I dug for myself.”

Pori looked at Ahuva, eyes boring straight into her heart. “Let me tell you one thing, little sis. There is no such thing as the road of no return. There is no such thing as a fatal mistake. The solution is waiting, you just got to be ready to find it.”

A tense silence hovered over the room.

Ahuva broke it. “You don’t understand, Pori. You don’t even know what I am talking about! For goodness sake, I am not sure why I am even telling you this much!”

Pori raised one eyebrow. “This much? Huvs, you haven’t said a word since you walked in from school. You locked yourself into your room and pretty much ignored everything and anyone. You are going to either snap out of it, or…” she let her sentence dangle dangerously in the air.

“Or what?” Huva challenged, her voice quivering slightly.

“Or you don’t want to know what kind of atmosphere you will spread here. It’s hard enough for me to take care of the finances here, it’s hard enough for me to be the one to hold everyone together here, I just can’t deal with even one more issue or I’ll snap.” Ahuva blinked. She knew things weren’t great, but what does a thirteen-year-old girl know?

She took in the crème-colored walls and elegant drapery. A cynical laugh escaped her throat. No one looking around here would ever guess what was really

happening in the Sternhill home. In the meantime, Pori was demanding answers. Ahuva’s eyes flashed.

“So what if you are struggling? Does that mean that I have to share with you my every issue just because you have taken on role of super mom. You are not my mother. You hear that?”

She repeated, “You. Are. Not. My. Mother.” “Alright.” Pori’s voice was soft and intimate. “I am not your mother, I am your older sister who is supporting the family while Dad is away somewhere on a business trip and Mom is trying to keep us all afloat. I am paying my weekly wage towards rent and groceries and whatever else you may need, cleaning up in the morning before I leave and at night when I get home, and staying on top of preparing meals here. But I am not your mother. I am just Pori, the 25 year old girl who is too young to really be a mother.”

Ahuva stood still. Her feet wobbled as she got up. Tears glistened from her dark black lashes.

“Pori, you know how much I love you. You know that I would love to see you out of here, happy and raising a family of your own. But right now, that isn’t in my control. And I would love it if you didn’t have to do all of this. I am only thirteen years old, I cannot possibly contribute to the family income! What do you expect from a little girl?”

“I expect answers, young lady.” Pori leaned over her.

So she supplied answers. ***

“Tehilla! Tehilla!” Two little head full of curls laughed and four arms were thrown around me.

Babysitting for the uncomplicated Levovitz children was a breath of fresh air. It was a rare treat these days, Ma being away and all. Tonight, Ta had urged me to get out and go babysit. He knew how much I needed it.

“Is it true? Is it true?” Chanala asked, her green eyes widening as she spoke.

“Is what true, cutie?” I leaned down and tickled her nose.

“That you mother had a stroke?” I gazed into her innocent eyes.

My heart skipped a beat. “Who told you that?”

At that moment, Mrs. Levovitz rushed into the kitchen.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped. “You know, kids being kids.”

I looked at her weakly. “Did you say stroke?” Understanding slowly dawned upon her face.

“Darling, you mean to say that you didn’t know?”

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. “I’m so sorry, Tehilla. I honestly didn’t know that this was so private. We are all with you and your mother, praying for her recovery and sending over as much help as we can. I would’ve kept it private, too, had I known it was a secret.”

“I..” I tried to talk. “I…” To my horror, a huge sob escaped my throat and refused to let the words out.

Dabbing furiously at my tears, I whispered, “I just didn’t know it had a name. The thing. I am so relieved to finally hear the name.” Mrs. Levovitz looked at me.

“Tehilla, perhaps your parents had a specific reason why they didn’t want you to know the prognosis. Maybe they thought you would worry too much. Or maybe they think that this will blow over shortly, so they were hoping to gloss over the details. But it shouldn’t have come from me, this information.”

So what did she exactly want from me, the little girl once leading the perfect life, who had just been told that her mother had suffered a stroke?

The rest of the night was a blur. I wasn’t sure what Mrs. Levovitz had been thinking, leaving me to babysit her four rambunctious children in my shell shocked state. Or maybe she had known that taking care of her yummies would calm me down.

I buried my face into Baby Sari’s soft pink blanket and inhaled her soft newborn scent. I sang a gentle lullaby as I rocked her back and forth in my arms.

For that moment, the sound of my clear honeyed voice brushing over the walls and embracing the still home brought me to a place of peace. For just that moment, I was able to feel that perhaps, just perhaps the past few days of my life had simply been one bad dream.

When I began to work as a contractor, building houses in the community, I realized there was no way I could manage without What’s App. How else could I be in touch with my workers? How else could I tackle the legalities and stay on top of each project?

Of course, I made sure to get my phone filtered before I began to use it.

In those early days, I was in constant contact with an older relative who is in the same field. He helped me immensely, offering tips and guidance like only a seasoned contractor could. I respected him and appreciated his benevolent assistance. He, too, had started out building small units, but by now, he builds larger projects.

I was surprised do notice, once when he so kindly came down to a site to help me resolve an issue, that he had no smartphone. He told me about a particular plumber who could do the job for me and when I asked for the plumber’s phone number, he whipped out a tiny pad from his pocket. He flipped the pages until he found it.

“What a modern way to

store your contacts!” I teased.

But my relative looked at me in all seriousness. “Yes! I am very up-to-date! This is my phone, phone book, and calculator, all in one!” He smiled.

“Just give this a try,” I flashed my phone in front of him, “and you’ll never turn back.”

But he just shrugged and replied, “No, no, I’m good.”

Old school, I thought to myself. He just doesn’t understand. But deep down, there was something inside me that respected that oldschool connection. My relative was keeping to his principles despite the technological climate. I was amazed!

In time, my business grew and I got busier.

One day, I attended an asifah on chizuk in technology in our community. It didn’t happen overnight, but it got me thinking. Perhaps I really could do better. Perhaps I could manage to put my gadget aside and begin a clean slate. I knew my phone bothered my wife tremendously, and I knew that it affected my children at home, too. Until that point, I sincerely believed that I could not run my business any other way. Or could I?

Deep down in my conscience, I saw my relative standing with his little notepad. If he could do it, so could I!

WHERE DOES HE DWELL?

In Parshas Terumah, G-d instructed the Jewish people to build a Tabernacle. "v"Asu Li Mikdash v'Shachanti b'Socham- And they shall make me a Tabernacle and I shall dwell in them." Seemingly Hashem should have said that He "will dwell in it", meaning that the Shechina will dwell in the Tabernacle. Why does Hashem instead say, "And I will dwell in them"?

Rav Menachem Mendel of Kotzk answers that the Shechina is not limited to a physical space, rather every Jew has the ability to be a living and breathing Tabernacle, in which the Shechina can reside. This is why it says, "I will dwell in them". There are Jews who need

to make a very deliberate and conscious effort to allow the Shechina to permeate their lives. They weren't raised with a Jewish education. As you can see in this recent photo, Jews are at BJX on a blustery cold night to learn Torah and connect to their Rebbe because they feel the love. Slowly, the Shechina is being implanted in the hearts of each and every one of them. “I will dwell in them.”
