WELCOME TO PINT SIZED 11 08 13 08 05 06 05 2
WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK BREWING & BRANDS PINT SIZED !
I’m really proud and excited to introduce you all to our newly relaunched Pint Sized.
We’ve listened to your feedback and have introduced a sustainably printed version along side a revamped digital edition which will be published every two months.
This publication has been created uniquely for our brilliant Brewing & Brands teams and will feature news and stories from across the whole of the B&B estate with the aim of keeping you up to date with what is happening throughout the business unit.
This is your publication so please take the time to read it, contribute to it and make it your own. I am personally looking forward to reading all your updates from every corner of our B&B family.
It’s brilliant to see this new look Pint Sized going out. You all work incredibly hard and it’s great to see some of the work of our teams and individuals recognised within this publication. It’s also important for you to feel informed and to be across what’s going on in the business. It’s been a busy year so far! Looking back at the first five months makes me feel extremely proud. I was blown away at our Pride of Greene King Awards recently where we had the opportunity to showcase and toast some of our team members. It was great to see so many teams and individuals embracing our culture, living our values, and realising our purpose of pouring happiness into lives. We received over 50 different nominations just for Brewing & Brands which is testament to the energy and passion you put into your day jobs.
We have so much to be proud of at Greene King and the work you all do day in, day out is integral to the success of our business. I can’t wait to see what else Brewing & Brands have in store for this year.
WHY PINT SIZED MATTERS...
For those that don’t know me, I joined the business as Internal Communications Manager back in October and I’m here to really bolster our efforts around what we are communicating and the ways in which we do this.
We recognise that a large proportion of our workforce don’t start the day firing up a laptop so in a bid to reach every single person in B&B we made the decision to launch a print publication.
My vision for Pint Sized is that it will leave you feeling informed, recognised and that you have a positive voice in our business. I will always be looking for new content so please do get in touch with me directly if you have any news, updates, or something you think we should be sharing with our teams. I would also be keen to hear from anyone that would be interested in contributing to the production of our new publication.
This is to be led by all of you and hopefully demonstrates the incredible efforts of our teams day in, day out. Hope you enjoy the read!

SPECIAL MENTION TO...
Stuart Lloyd, Large Pack Manager was crowned the winner in his category of ‘We Take Ownership.’ Huge congratulations Stuart! Check out Stuart’s nomination below: Stuart constantly looks for his area to deliver the highest standards, despite many obstacles from many angles placed in their way. Stuart never shies away from any of the challenges and meets them head-on with a can-do attitude. A great example of this is when a colleague sent me a picture from Pub in the Park with a fault on one of the kegs in their stock. There was a pool of beer in the keg coupling well which should not happen. I forwarded the picture to Stuart, expecting him to look into it on Monday (it was Saturday lunchtime). Without any expectation or request, Stuart walked 3 miles into work and checked several hundred kegs
in stock to ensure there were no more issues. There were no more faulty kegs found, but the attitude and ownership shown by Stuart should be applauded and recognised. His dedication is infectious to those around him.

PAUL PETTITT - THE MAN WITH A BIG CAREER!
This year sees our Head of Planning Paul Pettitt celebrate 40 years at Greene King
“He’s too young surely” I hear you all say - well he certainly started young and has worked a great variety of roles leading to his current position, where with the support of his team, he oversees the customer demand for all our beers. We caught up with Paul and asked him about his time in our brilliant B&B team.
“Back in the early 1980s unemployment was at its peak of over 10% and for every job going there were at least 100 candidates. I was fortunate to be offered 2 part-time jobs in Bury (4 days at a local butchers and 2 days at GK washing the Directors cars). Beer won over Beef mince !! Whilst over the past 40 years I have had many tempting opportunities to move on, the opportunities to progress internally have kept me loyal to GK. Whilst I’ve often reflected on what could have been, I have no regrets at all as I have always found Greene King to be a progressive, rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable place to work”
Let’s all raise a glass to Paul’s impressive achievement - thank you for your service Paul.

FROM REPACK TO TEAM LEADER
When did you join the company?
I joined in 2013 as agency staff to cover the repack operation for two weeks. After still being in the role after a few months, I trained to be a stand in team leader which saw me gain experience in dealing with agency staff and reporting in meetings.
NAME:
AIRA STURIENE
JOB ROLE: WAREHOUSE
TEAM LEADER, HEN HALL
If you’d like to nominate someone that you think we’d all like to read about - email alicefarnsworth@greeneking.co.uk
Tell us about your Brewing & Brands journey?
After initially joining as agency staff, I interviewed for the repack team leader position three times and was eventually offered the role on a permanent basis in November 2016. I worked in this role for six years until I became Warehouse Team Leader in July 2022.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day will see me attend several meetings and walkarounds to monitor the operation. I am also responsible for stock checks, loads leaving on time, receiving loads, and keeping a check on delivery times. I also line manage five forklift drivers and two administrators.
How do you feel as a Brewing & Brands employee?
I feel valued and very motivated, I also feel very fortunate to have a manager that has recognised my potential and has given me the freedom to succeed. Both my manager and my team are extremely supportive of me, and I have enjoyed building more relationships across the business as I have progressed. I feel very content and fulfilled in this role.
What would you say to other women who may be considering getting into this industry?
You need to be dedicated. Don’t be afraid to come in and work hard and you will progress. Throw yourself at everything and you will learn so much on the job.
Paul, as Aira’s manager what would you say about her Brewing & Brands journey?
After working with Aira for a few months it became clear to me that she was ready to be stretched and challenged. The warehouse as an environment needed someone to take ownership, as soon as Aira stepped into this role she made a difference; when she joined, we were at 78% on stock control and after a recent audit we were delighted to be at 100% on stock control. Aira is incredibly resilient, and this was instantly recognisable when I joined the Hen Hall team. Not only has Aira and her team progressed exceptionally well, but she has also done this whilst learning a completely new language. When Aira joined, she didn’t speak a word of English and managed to learn our language from working with English speaking colleagues – this alone is an extraordinary achievement.

CORONATION CELEBRATIONS FIT FOR A KING!
This month saw us celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in true Brewing & Brands style!
Our fantastic new Coronation Ale landed across Brewing & Brands in celebration of the momentous occasion. Each team member received a free bottle of the ale, so we could celebrate as we do best, with a beer in hand.
Not only did we launch our 2023 Coronation Ale to celebrate the coronation of our new King, but we also auctioned some unearthed crates of old Coronation Ale brewed for the coronation of Edward V111 in 1937! The rare beer had been lying in storage in our cellar following the abandoned Coronation almost 86 years ago, after the prospective King abdicated the throne, before the event could take place.
Several crates were auctioned off on 5th May with all proceeds donated to the charity founded by King Charles III, The Prince’s Trust. The trust aims to support young people aged 11-30 from disadvantaged communities to develop essential life skills. The PR campaign around the 1937 Coronation Ale gained mass media interest with over 270 pieces of coverage across global,
national, and regional publications.
We also released an exciting report, Serving King and Country: The Great British Pub at the heart of communities which celebrates the role of the Great British Pub within our communities, tracks how pubs have evolved with society since the last coronation and explores how we can make sure pubs thrive in the future. BRINGING OUT THE BEST OF BELHAVEN
2023 is seeing even more exciting investment in our Scottish business; the relaunch of our iconic ale, Belhaven Best.
Belhaven Best is launching with a new design that incorporates Belhaven’s famous 300 year old malting chimneys and with a nod to the local town of Dunbar, known affectionately as “Sunny Dunny”,with the rays of sunshine flowing through the chimney design.
A full set of branded point of sale will be available for the Trade along with a comprehensive marketing launch campaign across all media types.
VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER
Exceptional feedback for our Supply Chain support team, Off-Trade...
I just wanted to reach out to say thank you and congratulations on your fantastic inbound service to Tesco last year. You ended the year on 99.2% which is an outstanding achievement. This performance makes you our joint No.1 Beer supplier for 2022/23. Speaking to the team they have highlighted how impressed they are with your pro-active and timely communication.
We truly appreciate all the hard work that goes into delivering such great service. High inbound service results in fantastic availability for our customers, so please pass on our thanks to all the team and keep up the great work.
Malcolm Talmage, Food Supply Operations Manager
Belhaven’s dynamic Brand Manager, Fiona Matheson explained:
“ We wanted to make this legendary beer relevant, approachable and inclusive for a new generation of drinkers. The new design challenges the old-fashioned image of Ale, communicating freshness and sessionability yet still celebrating Belhaven’s proud heritage and provenance”
Consumer research that underpinned local design firm Thirst’s creative work indicated that the rebranding of this much loved classic 3.2% session ale would appeal to new audiences without alienating existing Best drinkers. It also showed that customers are even more likely to recommend Best to their friends after seeing the new design. So while things change, times shared together will always be the best!
Belhaven Best is the first in the portfolio of famous beers to receive the full rebranding treatment and it’s hoped that its success will generate even more future investment in Scotland’s oldest working brewery.

CASK PINS SET TO LAUNCH THIS SUMMER!
We are all set to launch cask pins, a 4.5-gallon unit container, in a bid to reinvigorate the sector by helping licensees deliver a range of fantastic cask-fresh beer to customers every time whilst also minimising wastage.
We will be rolling out the cask pins to all managed, lease & tenanted and free trade customers this summer with our seasonal cask beers calendar, Fresh Cask Releases, which is a rolling portfolio of cask styles and flavours tailored to specific points in the year.
With the introduction of pins, pubs will have the ability to manage a lower throughput at quieter times of the week, meaning less waste or risk of serving beer past its best quality. During busier times, cask pins offers the customer the opportunity to provide a seasonal cask ale, providing a wider choice on the bar.
John Malone, Head of Brewery Engagement, said: “The launch of pins within our business is one of many ways
we are investing in the cask beer sector and in the industry. We have addressed the challenges serving this unique product can bring, and we believe the introduction of pins will help pubs serve our fabulous beers in perfect condition every time, whilst minimising wastage and maximising profits.
“Introducing pins will also provide pubs with the opportunity to expand their range and offer seasonal ales that provide a wider choice of styles and flavours to their guests. Cask ale is at the heart of a great pub, driving footfall and guest loyalty. We aim to support our customers in serving the best range of perfect quality beers for their bar.”
We’ll be keeping you posted on the developments with this exciting project over the coming months, so stay tuned for more information!

GOOD TO KNOW...
VALUE FOR VENUES
At the start of this year, we launched Value

to showcase how Greene King and Belhaven
Venues,
are providing best-in-class
support and services to independent and free house venues.
During the past three years, our customers have faced unprecedented challenges and more now than ever, with rising supplier costs and everchanging consumer habits, running an independent venue can be extremely tough and isolating. We learnt that the best way to support our customers was to create a package that had everything in one easy place. Value for Venues offers an all-round suite of services that can bolster profits for venues in a simple, cost-effective way, whilst also providing that guaranteed support to those running an independent venue.
Under the tag line, “Everything your venues needs, in one place” we call out our key pillars to highlight how we can add value to our customers businesses in ways other suppliers can’t. These categories are range freedom, customer service, financial support and business advice.
For more information on our key pillars, please visit https:// valueforvenues.co.uk/ and follow https://www.linkedin.com/ showcase/value-for-venuespowered-by-greene-king-belhaven to keep up to date.
Looking ahead, we will continue to promote Value for Venues in the trade, develop our digital offering further and provide additional sales tools to help support our current customer base, drive new business, increase OBV distribution & profit for Brewing & Brands.

WELLNESS YOUR WAY…
So far in 2023, we have made some great strides for employee wellness in Brewing & Brands.
We opened fitness sessions in winter 2022 with low uptake before the holidays but we have seen a significant increase in attendance this spring! We also have a new health kiosk that has been placed in Hen Hall, so if you’re over that way be sure to stop by and try it out. This health kiosk will measure things like BMI, body fat percentage, muscle percentage, and more. Fruit Boxes are now being delivered to all sites and we have received some incredible feedback on this. Keep an eye out for plenty more coming over the next few months!
Health Kiosk:
“People are excited about it! It’s a good thing as it measures everything and it’s interesting to have and check because not everyone checks at home.”
GREENE KING ANNUAL REPORTA YEAR IN REVIEW 2022
Fitness Sessions:
“I got home feeling less stressed from the day and ready to switch to my home life interactions”
“The staff are loving it. They really appreciate the healthy options that the company is providing and have shared that chocolate & crisp consumption on nightshifts has reduced in favour of apples and bananas!”
Earlier this month, we announced our annual results for 2022.
WE CARE…
We care about every person that works here and want to help as much as we can. As part of the Greene King family, you are entitled to several rewards and benefits.

We also have a fantastic Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), this service is free and confidential 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The EAP can assist you with a range of issues from health, wellbeing, financial & legal advice.
Overall, it was a solid financial performance against a challenging backdrop. The way our teams have risen to the multiple challenges of 2022 has been truly awe-inspiring, and the full annual review looks in more depth at the strategic progress we’ve made, our business and brands, as well as celebrating our successes and looking ahead at how we set ourselves up for success in the future.

OUR
SPOTLIGHT: OLD SPECKLED HEN
UK’S NO1 PREMIUM TRADITIONAL ALE CAPITALISES ON STRONG GROWTH
Greene King continues to invest in our much-loved traditional ale Old Speckled Hen, building on the great work over the last couple of years that has seen the famous brand cement its position as UK’s No1 Premium Traditional Ale.
The last six months has seen a 7.6 % increase in the volume share for the brand, propelling OSH to it’s highest share in over 3 years !
In fact, our orchestrated marketing campaignsupported by the quirky Henry the Fox character who returns to our screens this summer(see below) - has resulted in this classic beer being the only Ale brand out of the UK top 8 to have grown against the backdrop of a sector that has seen a decline of nearly 10% over the last year. Data from Kantar also confirmed that OSH is the No1 Ale for household penetration-in other words more households are trying our ale than any other brand in the sector.
This is all great news as it means more pubs and supermarkets are now stocking the brand as they see the value it can drive for their sales.
To top it all the team are super excited that Old Speckled Hen has been shortlisted for the Drinks Brand of the Year at the prestigious Grocer Gold Awards held on 4th July - We will update you on the result in the next edition-keep everything crossed !
