With the promise of spring on the horizon, I want to express my gratitude and amazement at the resiliency of our community. Covid-19 has brought significant loss to everyone. Leisure Servicers lost one of our own souls, volunteer Vinny Gionfriddo, to Covid-19 in December 2020. Uncle Vinny, as he was known to the West Hartford and Elmwood Senior Center regulars, loved calling Bingo games, organizing Senior Center closets and greeting all patrons with a smile and hearty hello. His presence will be missed but we will honor him by offering our own smiles and hearty hellos to others. He would like that.
Helen Rubino-Turco
I also want to take a moment to thank the West Hartford Leisure Services staff for their hard work and commitment over this year. As the scope of Covid-19 unfolded, they quickly pivoted to provide Covid-safe programming, including summer camps, hybrid school support, free virtual classes and fun outdoor activities. Their exceptional resourcefulness was never more apparent than during the Covid-19 shutdown. I am honored to lead the team that supports these efforts with creativity and grit: Brenna, Christy, Doug, Ean, Gina, Jaime, Josh, Karl, Laure, Marc, Marla, Mike, Mike, Peter, Tim, Todd, Tom, Victoria, and a host of others. Thank you to them for their hard work. We hope you’ll enjoy the choices that West Hartford Leisure Services has lined up for you this Spring and Summer. There’s something for everyone – from bird walks to swim lessons and so much more. We will monitor recommendations from the CDC, Governor’s office and our local Health District, and maintain safety protocols and group sizes as directed. We encourage you all to follow our announcements on our FaceBook page. We’ll alert you to fun, community activities, like park-to-park summer bike rides, Run Your Park, or pop-up events. Sadly, the current climate necessitated that we delay Celebrate West Hartford until 2022. We know this is disappointing but we are excited to celebrate our community in a socially-distant, safe way. Stay tuned for more information about a June FUNd RUN to support some great causes. The Celebrate committee has a few other ideas in the pipeline, so keep your eyes peeled and your sneakers laced. During the pandemic, more and more people have turned to their local parks for recreation and mental health. Our parks, programs and staff are here for you. We survived a difficult year, but 2021 looks more promising!
Enjoy the fresh air and #SoMuchMore Helen Rubino-Turco Leisure Services Director
