WEST HARTFORD LEISURE SERVICES

THE PROGRAM We will adapt our program to accommodate the online learning requirements set forth by the West Hartford Public Schools. Children will need to bring their own laptop or tablet, and headphones. We will provide internet access. Children will be grouped with similar grades with a maximum of fourteen children per group, as outlined in state guidelines. Each pod will be independent, doing all of their activities together and spending the entire day as a group. Each pod will have 2 staff members assigned who will lead the children in activities, assist them with their online learning needs, and be responsible for ongoing cleaning and sanitizing of equipment. In addition, ECC also has a full time custodian who will be cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, common areas and high touch surfaces throughout the day. We will be outside as much as possible, playing games, making crafts, and engaging in other activities. Activities will be selected based on the ability to practice social distancing and keep physical interactions between children to a minimum.

From Our Director I hope this brochure finds you and your family safe. COVID-19 has certainly changed the landscape of our lives. It was a shock to lose access to places of work, education, worship and recreation in the space of a few weeks. In response, the community of West Hartford rallied in innovative and inspiring ways. The outpouring of good will and generosity from Town residents has been humbling, and is an example of what makes West Hartford such a wonderful place to live. During this time, Leisure Services pivoted to provide fun, entertaining, and educational content via our Facebook page and other online platforms. Programming included virtual classes from the West Hartford Senior Centers, lacrosse and baseball sports drill videos, Music Minute videos in conjunction with the wonderful and talented staff of the WHCI, Friday Night Dance Parties via Zoom with West Hartford Special Needs, Reading with a Chicken from Westmoor Park and Boot Camp with Cornerstone Aquatics trainers. With the arrival of Phase II reopening and warmer weather, Leisure Services increased recreation offerings in Town parks and some Town facilities. Summer camps ran at Elmwood Community Center and Westmoor Park, while area parks hosted Family Yoga, GAME ON! Tents and WHFD equipment and vehicle demonstrations. Leisure Services collaborated with Playhouse on Park and Bike West Hartford to offer other fun community activities. We hope you were able to take advantage of them. We expect to return to a printed version of our brochure at some point. This online version for Fall/Winter 2020/21 allows us to update safety restrictions, program cancellations and critical information as state and local government recommendations evolve over the next few months. We are taking our can-do attitude all around town, with a new perspective on safe programming outdoors, indoors and online. We will stay focused on public safety while we maintain our commitment to provide our community with high quality, affordable recreation opportunities, well-maintained parks and compassionate customer service. We have diligently trained Leisure Services staff town-wide on current safety protocols, and we have implemented stringent cleaning and sanitizing at all of our facilities. What will you find when you visit our open facilities? Increased safety protocols, certainly. We hope you’ll also feel our smile radiating underneath the mask.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Helen Rubino-Turco, Director

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 1 TAKE GREAT PICTURES WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE

Age 13+ • 6:00 – 9:00P

VIRTUAL Maybe you own a digital camera, but are not getting the kind of images you want. Or, maybe you’re getting some great pictures, but can’t figure out why. This, then, is the class for you. The major emphasis will be on moving away from the automatic mode, which most beginners gravitate towards, to shooting modes where you have total control of your camera. All the basic photography concepts will be presented and discussed in depth, including: Setting the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, Using the camera’s light meter to make properly exposed pictures, Focusing the lens to create sharp images, Backing-up images, Cataloging images, Digital editing basics

Age 12+ • 6:00 – 9:00P

VIRTUAL The quality of smartphone cameras is improving rapidly. In many situations, they work quite well as stand-ins for SLR cameras. his is a class for those truly interested in producing first-rate images with their smartphone cameras. That means moving away from the Auto Mode, where control by you is almost nonexistent, to the Manual or Shutter Priority Modes. This puts you more in charge of how the final images will look. The taking of selfies will not be covered in this class. Instructor: Peter Glass

This is a LIVE, ONLINE class that requires access to a web camera and microphone. See additional notes on technical requirements on the RecDesk Registration Page. Instructor: Peter Glass

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

Thank you to everyone in the community who contributed to make our Outdoor Classroom a reality! In less than 12 months we were able to fund-raise and build a beautiful structure that will serve school groups, classes, and camps for years to come!

A special thanks to our partners, the Friends of Brigid Curtin at Westmoor Park, the Murphy-Curtin family, the Daly family, and the Coursey family. Thanks as well for the unwavering support of Mayor Shari Cantor, Town Manager Matt Hart, and the entire Town Counsel. Your commitment, guidance, and friendship have been essential to bringing this project to fruition.

Westmoor Park will continue our fundraising efforts to increase our capacity as West Hartford’s center for environmental learning and connection. To get involved, donate to the Westmoor Park fund online (https://westhartford.recdesk.com/Community/ Program/Detail?programId=1377) or by sending a check to the Westmoor Fund at Westmoor Park.
