THURSDAY 20 JULY 2023 TORRES NEWS
Literacy focus behind extra WBNM Library times and resources To support Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh’s strong focus on literacy, the school library will be opening every Monday and Thursday morning for adults and children to explore our wide range of reading resources, Head of Campus Rick Cass says. “There’ll even be some take-home readers for the kids,” he said. “For the adults, tea and coffee will be available, too – is there anything better than a cuppa and a book? “We start this Thursday 20 July, and remember, this wonderful initiative is for all ages and we hope to see you there – let’s ignite a passion for reading in our children.”

Nominations open for 2023 Australian Human Rights Awards An opportunity to honour and celebrate individuals and organisations striving to defend and protect the human rights of people in Australia has opened with the launch of nominations for this year’s Australian Human Rights Awards. The Awards form a key part of Australia’s celebration and commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Awards provide national recognition to human rights champions from all walks of life and from right across the country, as well as to significant achievements in protecting and promoting human rights in Australia. Australian Human Rights Commission President Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM said 2023 was a landmark year. “2023 is a landmark year for people and organisations involved with human rights as we commemorate 75 years since the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he said. “This hugely important document continues to underpin so much about our contemporary approach to rights, justice and equality here in Australia and around the world, and so this year we’re focussed on highlighting the work of Australia’s human rights heroes in this context. “The Australian Human Rights Awards provide an incredibly valuable opportunity to honour and promote the work of our everyday heroes of human rights as well as our more high-profile achievers. “So, I encourage all Australians to get involved and nominate the people and organisations they admire who are working to protect and
promote human rights in Australia.” A range of new partners from the community, philanthropic, diplomatic, educational, government and corporate sectors are supporting this year’s event. Principal Partner Paul Ramsay Foundation CEO Professor Kristy Muir said thousands of Australians were making a difference every day, contributing to improving equity in society and championing justice for all. “Providing a platform to tell their stories and celebrate their work is vital to fostering an appreciation for the value and impact of human rights,” she said. Nominators whose nominees are chosen as finalists will receive one complimentary ticket to the Awards ceremony. Finalists will be announced on Monday 16 October. Award recipients will be announced at the Awards ceremony and reception in Sydney in December (date and time to be announced soon). For more information and to submit nominations, please visit: www.humanrights.
