The Torres Strait came to bursting point with the vibrant sounds, colours and spirit of the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival 2025 last week.

Thousands gathered in person on Thursday Island, Horn Island and surrounding communities, while countless more tuned in through national media broadcasts, creating one of the most widely shared celebrations of Torres Strait Islander culture in recent memory.

Mixed response to 2035 climate aspirations

BY CHRISTINE HOWES The federal government has set dangerously low climate targets, aiming to cut emissions by just 62 – 70 per cent by 2035, climate change activist group 350.org says.

The group called a series of ‘snap rallies’ across the country to lobby for stronger action.

“This is a betrayal of communities facing climate impacts across the continent,” they said.

“It’s out of step with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees.

“A target this low leaves communities exposed to more climate disasters, from sea level rise to fires, floods and dangerous heat waves.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen announced Australia’s 2035 climate change target last Thursday.

They said they had accepted the Climate Change Authority’s

“According to the best available analysis, the majority of the reductions for Australia to reach the initial stages of our 2035 climate change target range can be achieved through actions in five priority areas, building on our existing policies,” they said.

They were: • Clean electricity across the economy: more renewable electricity generation,

supported by new transmission and storage (including household batteries) • Lowering emissions by electrification and efficiency: our New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, supporting consumers to switch to EVs and improving energy efficiency • Expanding clean fuel use: establishing a low-carbon liquid fuels industry and supporting green hydrogen • Accelerating new technologies: through Future Made in

“The global shift to clean energy represents one of the biggest economic transformations since the Industrial Revolution – and it presents Australia with an enormous economic and jobs opportunity,” they said.

“This is the right target to protect our

environment and secure our prosperity and to create jobs and economic growth for our nation.

“We know every effort to tackle emissions today will help avoid the worst impacts of climate change in the future.

“This range will see Australia halve its emissions compared to current levels. It is in line with global efforts to limit dangerous global warming.”

The government also announced more than $8 billion towards clean energy initiatives and support for households and businesses.

Leader of the Opposition Sussan Ley said they would oppose “any attempt to legislate this target”.

“Australia must act on climate change,” she said.

“However, targets must be grounded in reality, achievable, and protect jobs and household budgets.

“Labor’s 2035 plan does none of these.”

National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Interim Chief Executive Su McCluskey said they were encouraged by the target.

“If we don’t get climate policy right, farming will only get harder,” she said.

“Quite simply, we cannot compromise our food and fibre security.”

Mr Bowen said they were on track with the world.

“The world’s action has taken us from a track of 4 degrees warming 10 years ago to now somewhere between 2 and 2.8,” he said.

“That’s good progress, but not yet enough.

“So we’ve all got to keep going.”

He said it was an ambitious target.

“This is a target very much focused on results and the results involved in this, even at 62, would be a halving of our emissions from today, a per capita halving from 2005 of about 78 or 80 per cent per capita,” he said.

“It’s the equivalent of taking transport emissions out of our economy twice between now and 2035.

“This is very ambitious. It’s doable.

It’s achievable.”

State and Federal ministers meet to work on priorities Food security in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities was on the agenda of a meeting between Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers responsible for Indigenous Affairs earlier this month.

The discussions were around key priorities and strategies to improve outcomes for First Nations people and communities.

A commitment to coordinated action to improve access to affordable, nutritious food for remote communities was reaffirmed, as was their commitment to the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (National Agreement).

The emphasis was on the importance of working in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Minister McCarthy provided an outline of the changes to the Commonwealth’s October 2025 Supplementary Budget

Estimates Program.

The changes allowed Closing the Gap to be considered across the week of estimates, in recognition that Closing the Gap was a shared responsibility across portfolios.

Consideration was given to the Closing the Gap Independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led Review, with Ministers acknowledging the critical role of First Nations leadership in driving accountability and progress under the National Agreement.

Ministers discussed youth justice and Minister McCarthy provided feedback on her attendance at the Standing Council of Attorneys-General meeting in August.

Ministers acknowledged the need for increased action to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in the criminal justice system.

An update on the First Nations Economic Development

and Productivity Roundtables was provided, and Ministers agreed to support initiatives that foster economic empowerment and participation.

Updates on truthtelling and treaty processes across jurisdictions were shared regarding efforts to promote healing, recognition, and reconciliation.

Ministers acknowledged the historic occasion in Victoria with the Statewide Treaty Bill being introduced to parliament. Minister Hutchins provided an update on the Bill and highlighted that the First Peoples Assembly and the Victorian Government see the Victorian Treaty as the pathway for the state to achieve its Closing the Gap commitments.

Ministers acknowledged the work of Jody Broun, who stepped down from her role as CEO of the National Indigenous Australians Agency on Friday, 29 August.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) and Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan Aboriginal Corporation have launched a new project to support patients from the Torres Strait and Cape York regions undergoing cancer treatment.

The new Cancer Care Coordination Service was designed to provide culturally safe and appropriate social and emotional well-being care, with an $880,000 grant from Cancer Australia over the next three years.

TCHHS Chief Executive Rex O’Rourke said the service was there to support patients who were undergoing cancer treatment in Cairns, had returned to their home communities or needed to travel to other facilities to receive treatment.

“Navigating a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be incredibly challenging for any person and their family,” he said.

“The aim of this service is to offer person-centred, culturally appropriate care closer to home, empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across their cancer journey, whether that be prevention and early detection, through to treatment,

“We have launched this service with key goals to increase the number of patient referrals and follow-ups and increase community engagement in screening, which will assist in reducing hospital admissions and emergency presentations.”

Simpson said they wanted to make sure patients had the help they needed.

“We know how onerous and overwhelming it can be for a patient from the Torres Strait, Cape York or the Northern Peninsula Area to leave their home community and be required to stay in Cairns or other larger centres to receive treatment,” she said.

“Our organisation will

be able to deliver social and emotional well-being care to these patients through our dedicated and experienced social work team.

“Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be life-changing and we want to make sure these patients feel supported and understood while they navigate their health journey in a potentially unfamiliar environment.”

Career on-track for Latrell Babcock signs with

Australian Border Force

BY ALF WILSON At age 21, Latrell Bann has the key to the door to a successful career in engineering after completing a Pathways Training and Employment Program, which has enabled him to secure a job with an industry leader.

Latrell, who has Iama connections on his grandfather’s side and Erub on his grandmother’s, and Mii Joe (18) were now working as dispatch operators at Australian Reinforcing Company’s (ARC) Townsville site.

They were responsible for picking, packing, and assembling loads for delivery.

Mii’s family are from the Samoan and Cook Islands.

They graduated from the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys’ Dream, Believe, Achieve (DBA) Engineering Pathways training and employment program.

Latrell said the DBA program, which was presented by Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, gave him the opportunity to pursue a more meaningful path.

“We went through the Dream, Believe, Achieve program and did a course at TAFE,” he said.

“After that the Cowboys helped us with opportunities and

“I decided to do DBA because I wasn’t really doing anything else, so I thought I’d use my time to progress to something better.

“I knew when I started that in a few months I would be proud of myself, and I am.

“It’s something that can help people – not just young fellas – but anyone who’s not doing anything with their time, as long as they commit to the program, it can change your life.”

Voting power in our hands as 2025 enrolment rates rise The Australian Electoral Commission has released the 2025 Indigenous enrolment rate, with an estimated 93.0 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples now enrolled to vote.

The national enrolment rate for the general population was 98.1 per cent.

The figure marked the first time Indigenous enrolment figures were estimated to exceed 600,000 people, with more than 16,000 additional First Nations people estimated to have enrolled to vote in the past year.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope said he was pleased to see the enrolment rate, given the Indigenous Australian population was growing at a faster rate than the general population.

“Indigenous enrolment figures have grown from 74.7 per cent since 2017,” he said.

Mr Pope said the numbers reflected the work they had put into the AEC’s partnership model with Indigenous Australian communities.

The eight-year contract with the Commonwealth Government will deliver two new mission-modified helicopters to Australia’s Border Force, plus air crews and ongoing aircraft maintenance.

Babcock’s service provided all-weather airborne services, enabling critical deterrence, prevention and response operations from Horn Island.

The service provided multi-agency capability for a range of maritime security threats, including illegal fishing, illegal immigration and marine pollution.

“They’ve completed their theory-based training and are gaining hands-on experience before returning for their practical assessment.

“If they keep putting their best foot forward, they’ll continue to receive on-the-job training and more high-risk tickets.

“Eventually, they have the option to move into front-of-house roles like sales, dispatch, and production planning.”

Cowboys Community Foundation CEO Fiona Pelling said success stories like Latrell’s and Mii’s demonstrated the value of the unique training model.

“Since 2015 we have developed a winning combination of in-class training, one-on-one mentoring, and work experience which has supported hundreds of out-of-work North Queenslanders into meaningful employment within the Hospitality industry,” she said.

“This was our first expansion into the engineering space, an area in great need of skilled workers, and we’re extremely proud of Latrell and Mii’s achievements so far and excited for their bright futures.

Joint report sets future health priorities for northern Queensland A comprehensive assessment of current and emerging health needs well north of the Tropic of Capricorn has been released in a wideranging partnership between Torres and Cape, Cairns and Hinterland (TCHHS), Townsville and Mackay Hospital and Health Services, and the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

The 2025-2028 Joint Regional Needs Assessment (JRNA) drew on extensive community input, lived experience and robust health data to guide where investment, innovation and collaboration would have the greatest impact.

TCHHS Chief Executive Rex O’Rourke said the JRNA was a critical step towards achieving health equity across their communities.

involving the four Hospital and Health Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Organisations, led by NQPHN, has provided an overarching assessment of the healthcare needs of our respective regions,” he said.

“Shaping the healthcare environment in our region for the better is a humbling responsibility to assume, but with efforts such as the JRNA, we are much better placed to fulfill our purpose than we ever have been.

partners in health who contributed to this report.

“Together we can affect real change to achieve equitable care.”

NQPHN CEO Ben Tooth said the JRNA was a practical, solutionsfocused report for the next three years.

“It provides the foundation for future planning and investment that responds to the unique needs of our region,” he said.

“By working with our partners, listening to our communities and using data to guide decisions, we can deliver a healthier future for all northern

Queenslanders.”

Mr Tooth said the report built a shared understanding of North Queensland’s unique regional health needs and service gaps, as well as identifying opportunities.

“Northern Queensland covers more than half a million square kilometres, with communities ranging from busy regional centres to some of the most remote islands in Australia,” he said.

“The JRNA gives us evidence that allows the health system to work together and focus on what matters most.

“Specifically, improving access to care, supporting mental wellbeing, preventing and managing chronic conditions, giving children the healthiest start to life, promoting healthy lifestyles, and building a strong and sustainable workforce.”

Boigu Island dancers were a spectacular and colourful part of the list of First Nations performers, creatives, market stall holders and food vendors delivering plenty of action and heart-warming highlights at Munro Martin Parklands for the 18th annual Big Talk One Fire cultural festival.

Festivalgoers watched, workshopped and caught up with family and friends while participating in a free, family-friendly program which celebrated the richness of Far North Queensland’s many distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The festival opened with a traditional welcome and smoking ceremony by Senior Traditional Owner Hendrick Fourmile, joined by civic leaders, including Queensland’s Member for Mulgrave, Terry James MP. A stunning opening dance by the Yidi Dancers of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, honoured the late Gudju Gudju Fourmile.

The cultural dance showcase unfolded with an impressive line-up of intergenerational performers from across Gimuy (Cairns), Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait which included the Mayi Wumba Dance Troupe, Kapay Kuyan Dance Group, Buuri Guuman Irribamuu and Malu Buay Gizlam- Torres Strait Dancers, whose ancient songs and vibrant movements kept the energy high throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Big Talk One Fire once again fulfilled UMI Arts’ mission to preserve, strengthen and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture, bringing the community together for an uplifting day of sharing, song, dance and connection.

Additionally the event was live-streamed on the Thursday and Friday night.

ABC Breakfast also did coverage earlier in the week.

“It is deeply significant for our people to see the Torres Strait represented on a national stage. These stories of resilience and identity belong to all Australians.

This year, our culture reached homes far from our shores, reminding the nation of the strength and beauty of Torres Strait Islander traditions,” Mayor Seriat said.

For our local communities, the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival was more than

an event – it was a living bridge between generations.

Elders played a vital role in guiding this year’s theme and program, ensuring cultural integrity and connection to tradition.

“This is where our children learn from our Elders, where stories are handed down through song and dance, and where culture remains strong,” Mayor Seriat said.

“Seeing our youth groups, like Tagai State College dancers, step onto the national stage with such pride fills me with hope for the future.”

Communities from the outer islands brought their unique performances, weaving demonstrations and kai kai food traditions, each adding to the festival’s tapestry.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chairperson George Nona said TSRA was proud to be part of the region’s flagship cultural event.

“The Torres Strait is the northernmost region of Australia and it is important our rich culture, unique identity and beautiful environment is showcased and celebrated with the nation and world,” Mr Nona said.

“In line with the 2025 theme Connecting Past, Present and Future, TSRA proudly showcased the creativity, customs and resilience of Zenadth Kes – our culture, language and communities.

“This year, our world-class ranger program was on show

with a focus on our Year of the Female Ranger to acknowledge TSRA’s 18 inspiring female rangers across the region, who are in nearly every ranger team and make up about a third of our ranger workforce.”

Unsung heroes Mayor Seriat also paid tribute to those who worked tirelessly to make the event possible: from cultural hut builders and bamboo cutters, to Council staff setting up ANZAC Park and Ken Brown Oval, to volunteers ensuring smooth logistics, the festival was a collective achievement.

“Their passion and commitment remind us that this festival is built on community spirit.

Without them, it would not shine so brightly,” she said.

Over four days, the festival delivered unforgettable experiences: • The float parade lit up the streets with dazzling costumes and floats crafted by

schools, businesses, and families.

• Food stalls sold out daily, with visitors queueing for traditional dishes alongside contemporary flavours.

• Weaving and arts workshops were packed with both locals and visitors eager to learn.

A visitor, from Cairns, described the atmosphere as “electric, emotional and a once-in-a-lifetime cultural immersion”.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre program included the Ewer: To Weave ZK Fashion Showcase (15-16 September), Luneg Theatre Production (17 September) and Weaving & Beading in Language Workshop (18 September).

The 2025 festival coincided with the 50th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s Independence, with TSRA extending its heartfelt congratulations.

“This significant

milestone was acknowledged with respect and celebration across the region,” Mr Nona said.

“PNG is Australia’s closest international neighbour and this connection runs deep in the Torres Strait from culture and kinship to traditional trade and the Torres Strait Treaty.”

The festival also provided a boost for local businesses, artists, and food providers.

“Our sponsors not only provided financial backing, but also employment opportunities, transport, and logistical support,” Mayor Seriat said.

“Festivals like this keep money circulating in our local economy, while building pride and recognition that will attract future visitors.”

Looking Ahead As the final dances concluded and the last stalls packed up, attention was already turned to the future.

The air was filled with song, dance and the spirit of connection, reminding us all of the power and beauty of our culture and traditions.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) was honoured to bring together nine rangers from Mabuiag, Badu, Warraber, St Paul’s and Boigu – each representing the strength of their communities and vital work to care for Country.

Their presence was a living statement of cultural pride and environmental management.

Throughout the festival grounds, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) was recorded

– capturing the voices of our Elders as they shared songs, dances and stories.

These recordings are more than memories, they are cultural treasures that will guide and inspire future generations.

On Tuesday, our ranger ladies performed at Tagai Secondary Campus Cultural Day, led by Mabuiag Rangers Virginia Harry and Harriet Holland.

The dance was a powerful tribute to heritage and identity.

Straight after, we joined the festival march from the park to the oval, walking proudly alongside community members in a shared celebration of who we are.

Thursday brought another unforgettable moment as our rangers returned to the main stage, this time joined by the very singers and composers of the songs they danced to.

The energy was electric and the connection between movement and music was a beautiful reminder of how culture lives through us.

We were thrilled to win the float parade!

Big eso to Hans Ahwang for his stunning woven dhari, which was a standout feature of our float. It symbolised the unity of land, sea, sky and the stories that bind us to them.

Throughout the week, our stall at the park and oval welcomed interested visitors.

Rangers shared insights into their work from land and sea management to cultural preservation and answered questions from those eager to learn.

It was a space of exchange, education and pride.

As the sun set on Friday, we didn’t just pack up – we carried home renewed purpose, deep pride and a sense of belonging.

Winds of Zenadth 2025 reminded us that culture is not just something we celebrate – it’s something we live, protect and will pass on.

A truth-telling, The IBIS Story book launch

BY AARON SMITH (FORMER EDITOR OF TORRES NEWS) A book documenting the history of IBIS (Islanders Board of Industry and Services), now part of CEQ (Community Enterprise Queensland), was launched last week at the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival on Thursday Island.

Four years in the making, the book was compiled from historical records, including CEQ and IBIS annual reports, government inquiries, and annual reports of the Department of Native Affairs (DNA), in all its various iterations right back to 1905.

The story was interspersed with a collection of 25 testimonials from Elders and community members from across the Torres Strait and NPA, who shared their memories of the early days of IBIS. The book was completed with a collection of historical images, presented as a limited edition, hardcover coffee table book.

The 120-year history of IBIS spanned back to 5 September 1905, when Traditional Custodian, Sagigi, suggested a sheltered bay, called Dogai, on Badu Island, as the perfect location for the first general store

for what was then known as Papuan Industries Limited (PIL).

It was established by a former missionary of the LMS (London Missionary Society), Reverand Fredrick William Walker, who wanted to establish a trading post that was fair and equitable for Islander and Papuan peoples.

However, the LMS did not agree, saying at the time in a letter to Rev Walker, that if the local people started, “on the road to money making, they would be led to greed and avarice.”

Rev Walker parted ways with the LMS and soon became known as “...the best hated man in New Guinea” because “...he always took the side of the natives.”

Rev Walker’s PIL helped Islanders gain a foothold in the lucrative pearling industry, as well as gaining skills in shipbuilding and other trades.

However, by the 1930s, after Rev Walker died, his enterprise came under the control of the Department of Native Affairs – a patriarchal colonial overseer and an arm of government.

PIL had its own form of money, paying Islander pearl divers, so they could only spend it at the stores.

This, and a fall in pearl shell prices, later created unrest amongst

Islanders that led to the 1936 maritime strike and subsequent Torres Strait Islander Act 1939, which afforded Islanders more freedom than mainland Aboriginal People.

The government changed the name to the Aboriginal Industries Board (AIB), which later became the Island Industry Board (IIB), and eventually the Islanders Board of Industries and Service (IBIS).

AIB even printed the region’s first newspaper, The Islander, for eight editions in the 1930s, predating the Torres News that began in 1957.

One of the most powerful testimonials in the book was from the late Athe Mebai Warusam, recorded just two weeks before he died.

As the last surviving Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion digger, at 99, Athe Warusuam, recalled battles with warring tribes, stories of the Second World War and the hardship that living so remotely brought. “It was hard work to unload when the boats would come, and if the boats came late at low tide, we had to walk out in the deep mud, it was a different time then,” he said.

“But the best thing after World War II was peace, no more war, no more killing, it was a good life.”

It was just the basic

staples back in those early days.

TSIMA journalist Jennifer Enosa’s father was the store manager on Boigu.

“I remember Dad handwriting all the bookwork, all handwritten. It was all boxes, hessian flour bags, tins… and very little in the way of fresh fruit and veggies,” she said.

But the truck had no engine, so someone would have to steer it while the community pushed the truck into the village at the other side of the island.

IBIS has created many opportunities for Ailan people, whether it was a career for life, or a first job, like Napau Pedro Stephen and Vonda Malone, who have gone on to build impressive careers as politicians, then as directors and chairs of various boards to influence and help their community.

It was not always

smooth sailing for IBIS, poor management in the 1990s almost led to its collapse.

But after some hard lessons and rebuilding in the 2000s, IBIS, now part of CEQ, has 31 stores across the Torres Strait and NPA, and 78 per cent of staff are Torres Strait Islander or Aboriginal peoples.

“IBIS is like the child, but the father, which is Government, doesn’t want to let go of the child’s hand,” Mr Stephen said.

“But you no boss por youpla, not anymore.”

Pride women out but great season a win for all

BMD ladies finals week three Cairns based Northern Pride ladies may have lost Saturday’s preliminary final 20-10 to the Brisbane Tigers but players and officials can hold their heads high after a successful debut season.

The hotly contested 12-club comp featured many quality players and Pride girls performed well to finish fifth after the fixtures.

Against the minor premiers Tigers, the Pride was a pronounced underdog and never gave up.

Pride included halfback Jairel MartinSavage, five eighth Jenni-Sue Hoepper, and prop Sareka Mooka in the run on side.

Veteran Stephanie Mooka came off the interchange bench and only played eight minutes.

The Tigers led 20-4 at halftime and Jairel and Lily Dick scored the Pride ties. Jenni-Sue booted the single goal.

A week earlier the Pride beat the Ipswich Jets 30-12 in an elimination final to set up the Tigers showdown.

Stephanie told the Torres News that after the game players formed a “guard of honour” for former Jillaroo Jenni-Sue

who is retiring.

Jenni-Sue who won the inaugural female Dally M Medal in 2015 has had a celebrated career representing both the Jillaroos, PNG Orchards at international level and the Queensland Maroons.

“Jenni-Sue has a great game and put some heavy tackles on bigger opponents.

“Jairel was in everything and has been a find of the season. It was also emotional for me playing with my niece Sareka,” Stephanie said.

Waiben-born Stephanie is aged 34 and said she was undecided if she would retire from Queensland Cup football.

“I will be playing in the Cairns Ladies Indigenous Allblacks carnival soon so will see how I feel after that,” she said.

Stephanie hadn’t played for some weeks and said she was drafted into the Pride team because of the number of injuries.

“I was pretty tired out there. But the Pride had a great season,” she said.

Tigers included centre Noame Gesa, who has Mer family connections.

In the other preliminary final the Burleigh Bears defeated the Magpies 24-12.

In next weekend’s grand final the Brisbane Tigers will meet the Burleigh Bears.

Men’s premiership finals week three Dantoray’s Dolphins down to Bears A Dolphins side which included young five eighth Dantoray Lui lost a nail-biting preliminary final 18-16 to the Burleigh Bears on Saturday.

It was a try three minutes before fulltime and a conversion which set up the Bears victory.

Dolphins led 14-6 at halftime at UAA Park on the Gold Coast and looked sure to advance to the grand final.

The decision to move to Redcliffe to join the Dolphins from the Northern Pride for this season has paid handsome dividends for Dantoray who got to play for a side which was one game away from a grand final.

After the fixtures the Dolphins finished sixth in the 15 club comp and the Pride came in 14th place.

In the other preliminary final on Sunday Norths Devils defeated Wynnum Manly Seagulls 18-16.

Captained by North Queenslander Kierran Moseley, Devils will meet the Bears in next weekend’s grand final.

Seb Kris strong but Raiders are done

BY ALF WILSON A Canberra Raiders side which included star Mabuiag Islander Seb Kris lost 32-12 to a rampaging Cronulla Sharks in an elimination final on Saturday night.

Seb played the full 80 minutes before the Raiders home crowd at Canberra’s GIO Stadium.

He made some telling runs and was once again required to tackle a lot.

Raiders finals campaign was hampered by the injury in the fixtures of quality winger Xavier Savage.

The Raiders which had finished the fixture rounds as minor premiers also lost the previous week 29-28 to the Brisbane Broncos and are now eliminated.

Dubbed the green machine, Canberra has a big supporter base on Waiben and Mabuiag.

However there are some residents on Mabuiag who are avid Sharks supporters.

In the other elimination final four times reigning premiers Penrith Panthers beat the Sydney Bulldogs 46-26.

The match was over at halftime when the Panthers led 36-8.

Panthers will meet the Brisbane Broncos next Sunday in a preliminary final with the winner to advance to the grand final.

Grand final opponent will be the winner of Friday night’s Storm versus Sharks clash.

The Broncos will be looking for strong performances from centre Gehamat Shibasaki and the return of five eighth Ezra Mam from injury.

Ezra injured his hamstring in the fixture round 23 loss.

NRLW finals week two More than 5000 spectators in Townsville watched the Cronulla

Sharks ladies defeat a gallant Cowboys 24-18 in an elimination final on Saturday.

Cowboys included centre Jasmine Peters, halfback Tahlulah Tillett along with forwards Tallisha Harden and Essay Banu all in the starting side.

Jasmine played strongly after suffering an early knock, Tahlulah kicked well in general play and made numerous precision passes, whilst Tallisha and Essay were solid up front.

Family and friends travelled from as far away as the Torres Strait, Cairns and Mackay to see the girls in action at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Sharks went into the sudden death final as underdogs and led 18-12 at halftime.

They scored four tries to three by the Cowboys for whom Francesca Goldthorp, Makenzie Weale and Bree Chester crossed for four pointers. Kirra Dibb kicked three goals.

Despite the loss it has been a very successful season for the Cowboys in the 12 club competition.

They finished a highly creditable fourth after the qualifying rounds of fixtures and it was first finals appearances in their three years.

With a taste of finals football now behind them, the Cowboys look to have a bright future in the comp and fans can be enthusiastic about next season.

Cronulla will now play the Roosters in a grand final rematch at Polytec Stadium in Gosford next Saturday night.

In the other elimination final Newcastle beat the Gold Coast Titans 34-20 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Newcastle will now travel north to face Brisbane at a likely sold-out Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the other preliminary final.

Eastern Warriors to celebrate their 10th year next month STORY AND PICS

BY ALF WILSON Eastern Warriors with players who have descendants from Mer, Erub and Masig will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the Bindal Sharks Allblacks carnival in Townsville next month.

One of the organisers is former NRL player with the West Tigers and North Queensland Cowboys, Robert Lui. “We started Eastern Warriors a decade ago to get all our brothers and cousins together and Max Cedar was right behind it,” Robert said.

Now aged 35, Robert played 42 NRL games for the West Tigers (2009/11), 46 matches for the

Cowboys (2012/15), and then played English Superleague for the Salford Red Devils and Leeds Rhinos before retiring from the top grade in 2021.

During his time at the West Tigers, halfback Robert played beside champion Benji Marshall, who is now the coach of the Sydney team.

At the Cowboys, he formed a great halves combination with the legendary Johnathan Thurston.

Robert later played club football in Townsville and is not the only ex-NRL player to have lined up for Eastern Warriors.

current Eastern Warriors side will include Queensland Cup Northern Pride star James Frazer, evergreen performer Eddie Daniel and at least one player from Masig.

Eddie has played at scores of Allblacks carnivals and scored a try for Brothers, who won the Cairns and District A-grade men’s grand final on 6 September.

James kicked two goals for beaten grand finalist Southern Suburbs.

“We will also have players from Cairns, Mackay and Sarina as well as Townsville.

For us, this is all about brotherhood,” Robert said.

This will be the last carnival for Robert as a player, and he is looking forward to it.

“I will get to play in the side with my young nephews and that is great,” he said.

Robert said the club was a real family affair and supporters came to the rescue recently to raise funds for jumpers.

“We will be wearing purple jumpers this year, and there will be lots of gatherings with family and friends during the carnival,” he said.

Jumpers have varied in colour over the past ten years.

Over the years, Robert has received wonderful support from his father Phillip and mother Wasee.

The 40th anniversary Bindal carnival will be held at the Townsville Sports Reserve from 10 to 12 October.

Diesel-fitter / boxer Rocky still unbeaten

BY ALF WILSON A flurry of power punches enabled Torres Strait Islander boxer Rocky Savage to win his second State Amateur heavyweight boxing title and maintain his unbeaten record on Sunday.

The 24 year old beat Jonty Ivey from Tully in a third-round knockout at the State Titles in Townsville on the weekend.

Born in Townsville, Rocky has family connections on Waiben, Erub, St Paul’s Village on Moa, Ugar and Rennell Island.

It was the first time Rocky had fought for 12 months during a period when he could take time out to finish his apprenticeship as a diesel fitter.

Sunday’s bout was in the 92kg+ heavyweight division.

“It was at the 36th second of the third round, and I had hit him with a flurry of punches, but the left-right hook combination got me the knockout,” Rocky said.

“It had been scheduled over four rounds of two minutes.”

Rocky trains with Flatenem Club in Townsville under the guidance of respected trainer and former quality professional boxer Gonzo Hooper.

“Rocky has been training hard and looked a very good boxer,” Gonzo said.

That took his impressive record to 11 wins from as many bouts.

Rocky said he felt great

and praised his personal Strength and Conditioner trainer Nicholas McCaig from Hammer Athletics.

“I am in very good shape thanks to Nicholas, and I also want to thank my sponsor David Saylor,” he said.

With just a month to go before he qualifies as a diesel fitter, Rocky intended to have a few more amateur bouts this year before making his pro debut.

“I am aiming to have my first professional bout in February at a tournament run by Matty Rooney from Knuckles Gym in Townsville,” he said.

There were 16 bouts each day in various weight divisions at the State Titles held at Townsville’s Ignatius Park College hall.

Boxers came from all over north Queensland, including Cape York and the NPA. Rocky said he has a big following amongst family and friends living at various Torres Strait islands.

“I keep in contact with most of them and they always want to know how my bouts go and when my next one will be,” he said.

Quietly spoken out of the ring, Rocky said previous stories about his boxing in the Torres News had received a big response.

“My grandfather Robert Savage had a few pro fights back a long time and I want to be like him. It is in my blood,” Rocky said.
