Pacific leaders hail Zenadth Kes leadership on climate change

BY STEFAN ARMBRUSTER AND SYLVIA TABUA IN HONARIA Torres Strait Islanders have been hailed at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders’ meeting in the Solomon Islands this week, for their stand on climate change in the

international and domestic legal arena as an example for the region to follow, PIF Secretary-General Baron Waqa says. He also said the Pacific wanted Australia to shift its economic focus from coal mines to renewables. “I should thank the Torres Strait Islanders [for] their advocacy, they’re going all

out to fight climate change and the effects on their livelihoods of their people,” former-Nauru President Mr Waqa said. “This is where Australia should be more attentive, listen more, partner more.” This week, leaders of 18 Pacific states and territories met in the capital, Honiara, for their annual meeting

to discuss regional issues, particularly related to climate change. Australia was a founding member of the PIF, which was the Pacific’s pinnacle regional institution. In 2018, PIF leaders issued the Boe Declaration, which identified climate change as the greatest existential threat to the region.
