KARASJOK
Experience the reindeer calving season
Reindeer calving in Karasjok – Day trip: A once in a life time experience.

Welcome to this unique adventure and to our calving reindeer herd here in Karasjok in Northern Norway.
We start the day with a snowmobile trip through a beautiful landscape to our herd, a 10 minutes long ride. If there is little snow, then we will walk or go with the ATV instead. We will inform you about the snow conditions in advance.
When we arrive, you can sit on a reindeer skin outside, and relax and enjoy the moment fully, and after a while you can join us around the bonfire, where we will tell you everything we know about reindeer calving.
We will serve you fresh coffee brewed traditionally on an open fire, and you will even get to taste dried reindeer meat. During this adventure you will also get the opportunity to feed the reindeer.

By visiting us, you will get to see the reindeer herd up close, and if you are lucky, you might even see reindeer giving birth. You will learn alot about our
traditions and our culture - and this sure is - a once in a lifetime experience.

As Sámi reindeer herders we continue with a traditional custom where we tame selected male reindeers for sledding as one means of transportation.
Every day at 10am we feed the male reindeers located at our homestead and clean their surroundings. Join us for a unique moment when feeding our reindeer located at our homestead in a beautiful winter nature scenery.

While feeding the reindeer we will share more information and stories about our way of life as Sámi reindeer herders, our traditions and customs within reindeer husbandry in the Karasjok area in Finnmark (Arctic North of Norway). Which is also one of the last areas in the Nordic countries where reindeer can roam freely and where we still maintain our traditional nomadic lifestyle parts of the year. Northern lights in Sápmi

Welcome to our cosy lavvo at our homestead here in Karasjok, in Northern Norway. We will share stories about life as reindeer herders, and the activities we do during our eight seasons. You will have the opportunity to meet our reindeer, feed them and take photos.

We will serve you coffee or tea and our homemade dried reindeer meat in the lavvo. In the meantime we talk about «Guovssahasat», the Sami word for Northern lights. It literally means ‘the light you can hear’. You will hear stories and myths about the Northern lights in Sápmi, how they affected us in the past and how we regard the phenomenon today.
After a warming cup of coffee you can join us outside while we wait for the lights to appear. If they are not visible we will try to call on them with a
«luohti», wich is a Sami way of singing. If the sky is cloudy and snowy we may not be able to see the northern lights. But if we are lucky and the skies are clear, we might catch a glimpse of the aurora dancing above us.
After your visit, you will have learned about our life above the arctic circle and how we have lived in harmony with nature and the animals.

Northern lights in Sápmi overnight stay in traditional lavvo

Stay the night next to open fire with reindeer close by, listening to stories about our ancestors dancing in the northern lights.
We welcome you at our homestead here in Karasjok to spend a night under the stars and, with a bit of luck, under the magical Northern lights. Once you are settled and comfortable in your lavvo, the traditional Sami tent you’ll spend the night in, we will visit you in there to share stories about our life as reindeer herders, and the type of activities we do during our eight seasons. You will have the opportunity to meet our reindeer, to feed them and take photos.
You can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and our speciality of dried reindeer meat while we tell you about Guovssahasat, the Sami word for Northern lights, which literally means ‘the light you can hear’. We will share stories and myths about the natural phenomenon in Sápmi, how the lights have affected us in the past and how we regard them today.
After a warming cup of coffee you can join us outside while we wait for the lights to appear. If they are not visible we will try to call on them with a «luohti», wich is a Sami way of singing.
If the sky is cloudy and snowy we won’t be able to see the aurora, but if we are lucky and the skies are clear, we might get to witness the dancing, colored lights.
After our visit you will have the lavvo for yourself
You can take the reindeer hides outside, lie down, watch the skies and enjoy the moment. You’ll have access to your own toilet in the main house. In the morning we will wake you with breakfast and we’ll show you how to make fresh coffee in the lavvo if you want to.

A night in the lavvo is truly special and a unique opportunity to be as close to nature as you can get. You’ll fall asleep to the softness of the reindeer skin you lay on and the warmth and light of the fire. Perhaps you even get to see the Northern lights from inside the lavvo. In the morning you’ll wake up to a cracking fire – that is, if you manage to keep the fire going throughout the night.. If not we can come and help you warm up the lavvo again.

Čávžo Canyon an unforgettable nature experience
One of few riverboat tours to Čávžo – Sautso Canyon, with exclusive access and delicious coffee break by the riverside overlooking the canyon.
The area around Čávžu - Sautso canyon is the reindeer grazing area of our siida and you will therefore meet locally known guides who can always tell you the little extra either about the riverboat, the nature and the surrounding landscape and not least the dam. At Čávžu - Sautso, we will go inside the mountain, and you will hear more about its technical details. Before we head back home to Máze, we will invite you to a small gáfestallan in the lavvo we have set up by the dam. Gáfestallan is our way of telling more about each other and getting to know each other over a good cup of campfire coffee and a small snack.
We will tell you the story about the gigantic hydropower dam and how it could have drowned the village if not for Norways biggest demonstration for the fight for Sámi rights.

This is a unique experience for those who want to indulge the wonderful nature from Máze to Čávžo - Sautso canyon with a traditional river boat. With an almost exclusive Sámi population, many living a reindeer-herding lifestyle, Máze itself is a quiet spot between

the city Áltá and the town Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino).

Ráidu – a cosy reindeer sledding winter experience

Right up until the 60s, Ráidu was a common sight in Máze and on the tundra, because today’s roads were first built then and new machines such as the snowmobile did not exist. Today, we still tame reindeers in the traditional way, both to be able to take care of traditional knowledge and to keep the heritage alive, and because we use our tame reindeer during the reindeer migration.
These are magical moments that are worth experiencing. By the way, did you know that Máze was the inspiration for the Disney movie Frozen 2?
After we return to the camp, we move into the heated lavvo, sit around the fire and listen to stories about old traditions and customs such as the proposal ride, while we enjoy a good cup of coffee
from the fire and strengthen ourselves with a small Sami snack.
We also recommend combining this activity with a Sami meal consisting of the Sami festival meal biđos with home-baked bread. The dessert consists of “Mountian Gold”, also called cloudberry, with whipped cream, coffee and cake.
Imagine a small village covered in snow and you’re cuddled up on big reindeer hides on a sleigh pulled by reindeers.

Unique experience with reindeer herders – Spring migration
Have you always dreamed of joining reindeer herders for spring migration with their reindeer herd? This is your chance!
Reindeer herding is managed by Sami reindeer herders in the traditional way somewhat modernized, and reindeer herders are semi-nomadic to this day. This means that we move with the herd from winter pasture to summer pasture.
We will offer you a unique trip with us to the mountains in fantastic nature where the reindeer herd is, to move the reindeers towards the summer district by the coast. Our winter district is in Kautokeino and we will move the reindeer herd over the tundra all the way to the coast.
You will have the opportunity to live in a traditional lavvu and eat traditional Sami food, which mostly consists of reindeer meat.
The activities consist of, among other things, moving the herd, herding the reindeers, ice fishing and making of Sami meals. But just the stay in the lavvu in total silence with the view of reindeers on snow covered tundra away from stress of sivilication, is a holiday on its own.
Reindeer herders move with snowmobile, but you will have the opportunity to move traditionally with reindeer sledding.

Price: From NOK 32500,- per person. Check our brochure for more information.

Whale and seabird cruises

area where the whale stays, there is also a great opportunity to see the king of the air, the sea eagle.
There are also many other bird species there. The stay on board the boat has a duration of 3 hours. The boat spends a short time out to the whales, so there is plenty of time to observe and photograph them.

Reindeer herder for a day?
Join a Sámi reindeer herder to his herd and get an unforgettable experience in scenic surroundings.
A day with a reindeer herd is a phenomenal way to get up close to the semi-nomadic life of the Sami people who practice reindeer herding. You will have the opportunity to take part in their everyday life as a herder.
Reindeer herding involves controlling the herd and getting them to graze.
The herder must be able to anticipate the animals’ movements based on their knowledge of the reindeer’s natural behavior during different seasons.

In almost untouched Norwegian nature, you will be able to experience reindeer up close and be served traditional Sami food in a lavvo, a traditional Sami tent.
Forget about time, enjoy the sound of silence and feel the closeness to nature!
