På TIFF er alle visninger og filmer spesielle, men noen er mer spesielle enn andre. Dette programmet gir deg et bredt spekter av unike filmopplevelser, fra karaoke-kino, til visninger på vår utekino på torget. De fleste av visningene går bare én gang i løpet av festivaluka, så det kan være lurt å begynne her når du skal legge opp årets festivalløype.

A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. This sidebar offers a whole range of unique film experiences, like the karaoke screening, and our outdoor Winter Cinema. Most of these screenings are also singular in the sense that they take place only once during the festival, so this might be the place to start planning your schedule.

VELKOMMEN TIL UTEKINO!

Tradisjonen tro viser Tromsø Internasjonale Filmfestival film for alle aldersgrupper på utekinoen i festivaluka. I år blir det visninger fra tirsdag til fredag, med Verdens Beste Familiedag, lørdag klokka 15.00 - se neste side. Mørketida er perfekt for film, og med snø og vintermørke blir Stortorget en kinosal utenom det vanlige.

Klokka 09.00 viser vi kortfilmprogrammer for barn. Tirsdag og onsdag er filmene tilpasset barn i skolealder, mens filmene torsdag og fredag passer for barn i barnehagen.

Den offisielle åpningen av utekinoen finner sted tirsdag 09.15. Få med deg filmgodbiter mellom de vanlige festivalfilmene, eller ta på deg vinterklærne og se et fullstendig program.

WELCOME TO THE WINTER CINEMA!

Tromsø International Film Festival takes pride in offering outdoor screenings to all audiences at Stortorget (the main square). The screenings take place every morning and afternoon from Tuesday to Friday, perfectly framed by the snow (hopefully) and darkness of winter. Don’t miss the Verdens Beste Familiedag, saturday at 15.00.

At 09.00 every day we screen short film programs for young audiences: Tuesday and Wednesday for school children, and Thursday and Friday for pre-schoolers. At 17.00 and 19.00 in the afternoon we will screen films for all audiences. Visit tiff.no for ore detailed information.

The Winter Cinema will be officially opened Tuesday at 09.15. Catch a short in between ordinary festival screenings, or put on ypur parkas to watch the entire program.

Lørdag 21. januar inviterer TIFF til Verdens Beste familiedag på utekinoen på Torget! Det blir idyllisk vinterstemning med den herlige familiefilmen KARSTEN OG PETRA PÅ VINTERFERIE.

I KARSTEN OG PETRA PÅ VINTERFERIE reiser de to bestevennene på hyttetur med Esther og morfar. Kosedyrene Frøken Kanin og Løveungen er selvfølgelig med. I ei hel uke skal de gå masse på ski og øve seg på å stå i nedoverbakke. Men Karsten er ikke så flink til å gå på ski og synes at bakken er litt skummel. I nabohytta bor Petter, han er både tøff og flink til å stå på ski. Karsten tror at Petra er mer opptatt av Petter enn av ham, og bestemmer seg for å delta i et hopprenn, for å vise Petra at han er like flink som Petter.

TIFF inviterer til en morsom dag med musikk fra filmene, snøaktiviteter, gratis solboller fra Coop nord, varm toddy fra Kaffebønna og en nydelig film om vennskap og familie. This year’s event is filled with idyllic winter atmosphere with the delightful family film CASPER AND EMMA’S WINTER VACATION.

Casper and Emma go off to a cabin for their winter vacation. They play in the snow and have a great time together until Peter shows up. It seems that Peter is really good at all kinds of things, and Emma thinks he’s just fantastic. Casper does everything he can to prove he’s good at stuff too, but is this the way to win Emma back?

Gaza, sommeren 2014. Det ryktes om en ny offensiv fra Israel. Krigen vil komme nærmere, og bli enda mer voldsom. Mens de fleste innbyggerne vil forsøke å flykte, ønsker Mohamed Jabaly, en ung mann i 20-årene, å hjelpe. Han slutter seg til et ambulanseteam, som manøvrerer seg gjennom byen med sine egne liv som innsats. Mohamed dokumenterer krigen fra innsiden av ambulansen, og ute blant menneskene som får sine liv ødelagt for alltid, etter hvert som bombene faller over hans hjemby.

ambulance er en rå og sterk førstehåndsberetning om konflikten i Gaza. Ikke bare forteller filmen om krigens mange tragedier, men også om mennesker som gjør sitt beste for å hjelpe sine medmennesker, til tross for at de selv befinner seg under angrep. Gaza, the summer of 2014. The word is of a new Israeli offensive. While most people want to flee, Mohamed Jabaly — a young man in his twenties — wants to help. He joins an ambulance crew, maneuvering their way through a city under siege with their own lives on the line. Mohamed documents the war with his camera, seen from the inside of the ambulance, and out among people who will have their lives changed forever, as the bombs keep falling on his home town.

ambulance is a raw first-person account of the conflict in Gaza. Not only does it show the horrors of war, but also the brave people trying to help, despite being trapped inside the conflict themselves. It is a brave and stunning piece of filmmaking that manages to be both merciless and human, presented by an exciting new filmmaker who demands to be heard.

Den vellykkede finansmannen Johnny lever et tilsynelatende problemfritt liv i San Francisco. Seemingly out of the blue, Lisa starts an affair with Johnny’s best friend Mark. From there Johnny’s world falls apart. Jealousy, madness and death awaits.

the room is known as “the Citizen Kane of bad movies”. Its unintentional comedy, a result of bizarre dialogue, strange timing, heaps of characters, odd digressions and heavy pathos has led to a huge worldwide cult status. Director, writer and producer Tommy Wiseau also stars as the lead actor.

Little is known about Tommy Wiseau. He is notoriously vague and often incoherent about his background. THE ROOM was his debut as a director, and he has made a career out of the phenomena surrounding the film. He recently he returned to the director’s chair with the webseries THE NEIGHBORS.

rashomon er en av filmhistoriens viktigste klassikere. Den vakte lite oppmerksomhet ved premieren i Japan og ble ingen bestselger for selskapet Daiei. Da filmen året etter vant Gulløven ved filmfestivalen i Venezia, og det følgende året også mottok en Oscar for beste ikke-engelskspråklige film, var det likevel liten tvil om at man stod overfor en milepæl i filmhistorien. rashomon åpnet verdens øyne for japansk filmkultur, mens japanerne på sin side kjente godt til, og var sterkt påvirket av, den vestlige filmen.

rashomon is one of the most significant works in the history of film. Whereas Western filmmaking had long influenced Japanese film culture, rashomon was the first Japanese film to make a significant impact on the West. It received little attention at the time of its release in Japanese cinemas and reaped no commercial rewards for its studio in 1950. However, after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival in 1951 and the Oscar for best foreign language film the following year, it soon emerged as a true milestone in the history of cinema.

rashomon is the tale of a crime committed out in the woods, involving two aristocrats and a robber. The story is told from several characters’ points of view. But which one of them is telling the truth? rashomon influenced European new-wave directors as well as American action-film directors. rashomon is the first Japanese film with a clearly modernist story.

words with gods er en antologi som presenterer ni kortfilmer fra kjente regissører. Felles for filmene er at regissørene utforsker tro, tvil og livstolkning med utgangspunkt i egen kultur. Antologien spenner vidt. Alle filmene utforsker religiøse temaer knyttet til livsoverganger, valg og verdier. Historiene tar blant annet utgangspunkt i lidelsens problem i buddhismen etter tsunamien i 2004, og hvilken rolle jødisk-kristne profetier spiller for dagens konflikter i Midtøsten. Men filmene utforsker også problemstillinger knyttet til blant annet hinduisme, ateisme, islam og kristendom. words with gods gir et bredt og unikt innblikk i et mangfold av livssyn og trosretninger, og er et bidrag til å reflektere over de felles menneskelige vilkårene bak ulike religiøse praksiser.

words with gods vises i tilknytning til seminaret radikal tro eller fanatisme som finner sted på KulturHuset fredag 20. januar kl. 14–16.

words with gods in an anthology that presents nine short films from renowned directors. The common thread is an examination of religion, regardless of whether the director was a believer or not. The directors investigate existential questions, faith and doubt with their own culture as a point of departure. Some of the narratives focus on the problem of suffering in Buddhism after the tsunami in 2004, and on what role the Jewish-Christian prophecies play in the conflict in the Middle East today. But the films also explore themes from Hinduism, Atheism, Islam and Christianity. words with gods gives a unique insight in the diversity of religious practices, and a contribution to reflect on the shared human conditions that the different religions address.

Guillermo Arriaga (f. 1958) som var initiativtaker til WORDS WITH GODS er en meksikansk regissør, produsent og manusforfatter. Han er kjent for arbeidet sitt med filmer som BABEL, 21 GRAM og ELSKEDE KJØTERE. WORDS WITH GODS vant en interreligiøs pris ved filmfestivalen i Venezia i 2014.

THE DIRECTOR

Guillermo Arriaga (b. 1958) started the project Words With Gods. He is a Mexican director, producer and writer. Arriaga is renowned for his work on films such as BABEL, 21 GRAMS and AMORES PERROS. WORDS WITH GODS won an interreligious award at the festival in Venice in 2014.

Det er et år siden mannen fra snåsa åpnet TIFF. 170 000 så filmen på kino. Nå er Margreth Olin klar med en ny helaftens kinodokumentar som vil skape debatt og engasjement. barndom er en stillfaren og nær, livsbejaende film om lekens og fantasiens betydning i barndommen. Leken er barnets egen næringskilde. barndom er en annerledes fortelling om hva barn trenger i en tid hvor leken fortrenges.

Margreth Olin vil her vise de første klippene fra filmen, og fortelle om prosessen hvor hun har fulgt barn mellom ett og sju år, med et observerende kamera, gjennom et barnehageår.

One year after Margreth Olin presented doing good as the Opening Film at TIFF, she is back with a work-in-progress on her new feature length documentary, childhood. This is a warm, soft-spoken and close encounter with the importance of play and fantasy in childhood, and how playing is vital for the well-being of children. childhood tells a crucial story about children’s needs, in a time when playing is increasingly marginalized.

Margreth Olin will present the first clips from the film, and talk about the process, where she followed several kindergarden children through one whole year.

Margreth Olin (b. 1970) is a Norwegian director, producer and screenwriter. She studied film at the Universities of Oslo and Bergen and at Volda University College. She has directed a number of acclaimed documentaries and fiction films. Olin runs the production company Speranza Film.

The film draws comparisons between a grand but dilapidated bungalow in a bustling town, with that of a temporary shelter in the harsh landscape of the Rann. The polarity between grandeur and simplicity, old and new, brings the narrative together in simplistic manner.

How is it to find your indigenous identity at your twenties in a foreign country? A personal story of a young lady from Russia who discovered her Evenkiness (from the Evenki people) studying at the university in a beautiful city in Northern Norway, Tromsø.

YOUNG FILM TALENTS: TVIBIT Youth Film House (Filmveksthuset TVIBIT) is a film laboratory for young filmmakers in Northern Norway, aiming to assist and aid emerging talent through mentoring, courses, workshops and financing youth film projects.

NUFF: The Nordic Youth Film Festival has been an international platform for countless young filmmakers since its beginning in 2003, and is an integral part of Filmveksthuset TVIBIT. Approximately 40 young filmmakers from all over the world gather in Tromsø for NUFF every year, to attend workshops and screenings, and to connect with other filmmakers.

SCREENING AND RECEPTION: Friday January 20 at 13:00, NUFF hosts an open reception at TVIBIT for young filmmakers, partners, international guests and festival audiences. On Saturday at 13:00, the award-winning films from NUFF 2016 will screen at Aurora Kino Fokus (see opposite page).

NUFF@TIFF WORKSHOP: 16 young people from four countries will first gather at the Nordic Film Days 2016 in Lübeck (Germany) and then at the Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) 2017 to make four documentary shorts together. For the project NUFF teams up with Station Next in Copenhagen, Youth Film Centre TVIBIT in Tromsø, Nordic Film Days in Lübeck and Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival in Finland. The project is supported by Nordic Cultural Fond, NORDBUK & Erasmus+

DOKFILMFANGST: Hunting for documentary filmmakers among young people in Northern Norway, Dokfilmfangst is part of Filmveksthuset TVIBIT’s documentary program. One film made at the workshop in 2016 will screen at Aurora Kino Fokus during the NUFF@TIFF film program (see opposite page).

SCREEN – CONNECTING YOUTH: Through the Peace Corps Youth Program and TVIBIT, young people from Northern Norway participate in a three-month exchange program doing film projects with partner organizations in South-Africa, Haiti and Kenya. Some of the films made through Screen 2016 will be screened at TVIBIT during TIFF 2017, with the participants present.

DESKTOP FILM MASTERCLASS: Walter Woodman and Patrick Cederberg, the filmmaking duo behind the critically acclaimed short film ”Noah” takes you through the making of a ”desktop film”, a refreshingly new genre that is perhaps the best media representation of our digitally connected lives. TVIBIT will be a place where you can experience VR during TIFF every day. Come and see!

CHILL OUT: During TIFF, the TVIBIT Café Kringla will be a meeting place for young festival participants. Choose from the affordable menu, or feel free to just hang out.
