Tromsø International Film Festival is proud to celebrate an important event in the history of the Sámi people. The first national convention in Tråante (Trondheim) February 6-9, 1917, was a giant leap forward in expressing a united Sámi identity, and has since become the foundation of the Sámi National Day. Several events will mark the 100-year anniversary in 2017.

Naturally, Sámi film and culture has been an important part of TIFF through the years. We have always believed in the importance of sharing stories, and have sought to be an arena for Sámi filmmakers to present theirs. We are proud to have premiered most of the (too few) Sami feature films made, among them THE KAUTOKEINO REBELLION which opened the festival in 2008.

For this 100 year-anniversary program, we have selected four films. They are all important films in the Sámi canon, and great examples of films that tell the history of the Sami people.

We are very proud of presenting these films – made from the inside of Sámi culture – and wish all of us a happy anniversary in 2017!

KAISA’S ENCHANTED FOREST

KUUN METSÄN KAISA

FINLAND 2016 DIRECTOR: Katja Gauriloff SCREENPLAY: Katja Gauriloff CINEMATOGRAPHY: Heikki Farm RUNNING TIME: 1h 22m PRODUCER: Joonas Berghäll, Satu Majava SOURCE: Oktober

After experiencing an incredibly life-like dream some time during the 1930s, Swiss writer Robert Crottet decided he had to travel northwards to meet the people he dreamt about – the Skolt Sami tribe of Northern Finland. He is well-received and develops a close friendship with the Skolt matriarch Kaisa. Once he has proved his worthiness, Kaisa allows Crottet access to their community’s rich tradition of legends and storytelling. This is the beginning of Crottet’s life-long relationship with this small and – as we will see – vulnerable tribe.

Using Crottet’s books, photos, videos and sound files, director Katja Gauriloff, Kaisa’s own great-granddaughter, has created an enchanting film about the meeting between two cultures. With poetic animations showing the Skolts’ legends, and a rich sound archive of Kaisa’s quirky musings and observations, KAISA’S ENCHANTED FOREST is a warm and endearing portrait of a time, place and people far north.

FAMILY PORTRAIT / CELEBRTING MUM

FAMILIEBILDET MY FAMILY PORTRAIT

NORWAY 2013 DIRECTOR: Yvonne Thomasse SCREENPLAY: Yvonne Thomassen CINEMATOGRAPHY: Olaug Spissøy Kyvik PRODUCER: Trude Refsahl RUNNING TIME: 58m

During World War II Yvonne’s grandparents with their three children had to flee their home, or face death when Finnmark was set on fire. Over the years they has fallen out of touch with each other, so Yvonne tries to gather everyone for a family portrait – but the traumatic memories and issues of shame for their identity cast dark shadows down through the generations – making the task difficult.

FILMKONSERT: VEIVISEREN

FILM CONCERT: OFELAŠ

NORWAY 1987 DIRECTOR: Nils Gaup SCREENPLAY: Nils Gaup CINEMATOGRAPHY: Eerling Thurmann-Andersen CAST: Mikkel Gaup, Nils Utsi, Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, Helgi Skúlason, Ingvald Guttorm, Inger Utsi RUNNING TIME: 1h 36m PRODUCER: John M. Jacobsen SOURCE: Filmkameratene

This year's film concert marks an important anniversary: 30 years after its premiere, we will raise the curtains for the very first Sámi feature film – Nils Gaup's intense action adventure ofelaš/pathfinder. Set on the Finnmarksvidda plateau, it follows Aigin, a young Sámi hunter who sees his family massacred by Chudes, a tribe from the East. Aigin swears revenge, but to save other Sámi who have fled to the coast, he must become a guide and pathfinder for the Chudes on a dangerous path through a rugged winter landscape.

Inspired by Sámi oral storytelling, Nils Gaup's debut feature was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards and has become a milestone in Norwegian film history. Although the original score is terrific (with contributions from the late Sámi artist and composer Nils-Aslak Valkepää), we will screen ofelaš as a film concert, with new music (see opposite page). Prepare yourself for a singular film experience!
