LOOKING LIFE IN THE EYE
It’s nearly impossible to mention Cristian Mungiu’s name without referring to the prestigious prizes he has won and where he has won them, but we’ll try. Suffice to say Cristian Mungiu is one of the undisputed masters of cinema alive today. At TIFF 2017 we will be presenting a retrospective of his feature length films, including the omnibus film consisting of six short stories, TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE (2009).
The Golden Age of the title refers to the darkest chapter in recent European history, that is, Ceauşescu’s reign from 1965 to 1989. Born in Romania in 1968, Mungiu is a true child of that “Golden Age”, an era so named by dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu himself, in full earnest. Strangely enough (or not!), Mungiu’s TALES is a thoroughly entertaining film, taking place in a darkly comic universe that is far-removed from the excruciating realism of his preceding film FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS, TWO DAYS (2007). Following TALES came BEYOND THE HILLS (2012), based on a true story from 2005 about a bungled exorcism, in a setting that easily could be mistaken for the Middle Ages, although it is not. The film explores a spectrum of emotions ranging from love, passion, to obsession, and their collision with the constrictions of society, be it a monastery community or small town in post-communistic Moldova. Or, for that matter, in a mid-sized city in Romania, where Mungiu’s latest film GRADUATION (2016) is set. A father desperate to guarantee his daughter’s future prospects seriously endangers them by resorting to corruption – a case of good intentions gone seriously wrong in a society that doesn’t really offer any alternatives.
No easy lessons here. Through acute observation and intricate analysis, Mungiu’s errand is not to pronounce judgement – which doesn’t mean that he is apathetic or amoral. Quite the contrary. This was already evident in his feature debut, OCCIDENT (2002), a tragi-comical, seriously funny social satire that invites us to “look life in the eye”, as one of the characters puts it. For Cristian Mungiu, a film shouldn’t be a conclusion, it should be a starting point. We, the audience, are entrusted with the challenge of digging our moral compass up from our pockets, and putting it to use.

Tre smått parodiske fortellinger løper på kryss og på tvers av hverandre i occident, lagt til post-kommunistiske ny-kapitalistiske Bucharest. Resultatet er en tørrvittig satire over drømmen om et bedre liv og hva man må være villig til å ofre for å oppnå dette. Et knippe unge mennesker fomler etter å finne holdepunkter i en overflod av muligheter, oppsummert i butikknavn som «Mer og mer: En livsfilosofi», og i replikker som «Tenk, du kan spise på McDonald’s hver lørdag!».
Tonen i occident vil kanskje vekke assosiasjoner til Jarmusch og Kaurismäki for noen, men dette er en fiffig fortalt bittersøt komedie, med solid sosialrealistisk klangbunn av ypperste rumensk art, som etter hvert skulle bli et kjennetegn ved det som ble døpt “den rumenske nybølgen”. Denne godbiten er dessuten svært vanskelig å oppdrive. Gå derfor ikke glipp av sjansen til å se debutfilmen til æresgjest Cristian Mungiu.
Three subtly parodic tales about life in post-communistic, neo-capitalistic Bucharest playfully intersect in occident, resulting in a deliciously deadpan satire of the dream of a “better” life, and what one has to be willing to sacrifice to achieve it. A handful of youngish, everydayish romanians struggle to sort out their goals and how to achieve them, when confronted with the new abundance of choices, illustrated in the likes of a shop named “More and more: A Philosophy of Life”, or embodied in comment “Just imagine how it would be to eat at McDonald’s every Saturday!”.
The tone in occident might be reminiscent of Jarmusch and Kaurismäki, but this intricately told, well-written bittersweet tale is patent Romanian-style social realism that later became a trademark for what has been called the Romanian New Wave. Don’t miss this rare chance to see the feature debut of our guest of honor, Cristian Mungiu.

I Nicolae Ceausescus kommunistiske regime i 1980-tallets Romania, kastes vi brått inn i to unge studenters liv. Gabita har blitt gravid, og blir stadig mer desperat ettersom ukene går. Framtidsutsiktene vil se mørke utom hun må avbryte studiene, dessuten er abort strengt forbudt. Gabitas handlekraftige venninne, Otilia, sier seg villig til å hjelpe henne med å ordne det hele på illegalt vis, noe som både er livsfarlig, straffbart og ydmykende. Uten å vite hvem de skal stole på, setter de to kvinnene stiller seg i en situasjon hvor de er svært utsatt for grotesk maktmisbruk.
4 måneder, 3 uker og 2 dager utspiller seg over én dag, men gir et mangfoldig innblikk i et lukket og råttent samfunn. Dens realistiske stil, med håndholdt kamera og lange, dirrende tagninger, bringer oss påfallende tett på det som skjer, og bidrar til den sterke inntrengende og rystende opplevelsen av denne gullpalmevinneren.
The year is 1987 and Ceausescu’s Communist regime is clinging to power in Romania. Gabita, a young student, has fallen pregnant. If she keeps the child, she’ll have to abandon her education and her bright future. Abortion, however, is illegal. Gabita and her friend Otilia therefore embark on a dangerous and humiliating journey to secure an illegal abortion. Without knowing who to trust, the two women find themselves in a vulnerable position open to abuse.
This Palme d’Or winner takes place over the course of one day, vividly portraying the rottenness at the heart of 1980s Romania. The use of a handheld camera and long, quivering takes mean that we follow the women intimately through the film’s fly-on-the-wall form. Mungiu’s realist approach and the film’s extraordinary cinematography make this drama a shattering experience.

Tiden under Nicolae Ceausescus brutale regime var utvilsomt ingen gullalder for det rumenske folket, selv om det var akkurat dette statspropagandaen hevdet. Denne ironien gjennomsyrer Mungius elleville skildring av samfunnet under Ceausescu. Store doser svart humor spriter opp en tilværelse der mat, elektrisitet og varmekilder er mangelvare, og hvor forskjellen mellom det som blir sagt offentlig og vanlige folks hverdag, er så himmelropende stor, at det bikker over i komikk. tales from the golden age er basert på kjente rumenske vandrehistorier som ofte springer ut av den den absurde logikken i diktaturet. Filmen var en suksess i hjemlandet, og består av syv fortellinger. Alle er skrevet av Mungiu. To episoder har han regissert selv, mens de andre er gitt et knippe rumenske regissører av samme generasjon.
Under festivalen vil de forskjellige fortellingene bli vist på utekinoen, fra tirsdag 17. – fredag 20. januar, kl. 17.
The final 15 years of Nicolae Ceausescu’s regime were certainly not a golden age, even though official propaganda told Romanians exactly that. This irony lies at the core of tales from the golden age. Based on some of the most popular urban legends of the period, Mungiu and his co-directors capture the mood of the nation with lots of black humor. It’s a period when everyday life was marred by the sparse supply of everything, from basic material goods to life opportunities, and where the twisted logic of the regime calls for bizarre, tragic and often comical situations. With its folksy approach and highly topical content, TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE was a box-office success in its homeland. The film consists of seven episodes, all written by Mungiu, who also directed two of the episodes himself. The others are directed by Romanian filmmakers of the same generation.
During the festival, these tales will be screened at the Winter Cinema, at 5 pm from January 17 – January 20.

En historie om desperat kjærlighet. En nådeløst kritisk skildring av et sektmiljø. Et bilde på fattigdommens konsekvenser i dagens Romania. beyond the hills er en kompleks film med mange lag, og regissør Cristian Mungiu viser sitt mesterlige håndlag med antydningens kunst og evne til å formidle mellom linjene. Likevel skorter det ikke på nerve i filmen – med en snikende intensitet utvikles et ubehag av grøsserens kaliber og en trykkende stemning som skal godt gjøres å riste ut av kroppen.
beyond the hills er basert på en virkelig og tragisk hendelse fra et kloster i Romania. Alina reiser for å gjenforenes med sin beste venninne som har blitt nonne på et avsideliggende kloster. I sjokk og sorg over den kjølige mottakelsen fra venninnen blir Alina syk, og med hennes manglende interesse for religion og tidvis vulgære oppførsel tar det ikke lang tid før nonnene mistenker at Alina er besatt av djevelen.
A story about desperate love. A harsh criticism of a religious sect. A reflection on the consequences of poverty in present Romania. beyond the hills is a complex film with many layers, and director Cristian Mungiu shows off his ability to read between the lines and to convey a great amount of subtext with small hints. Yet, the film lacks neither nerve nor tension, with an increasing intensity that creates a suffocating atmosphere and true horror.
beyond the hills is based on a true and tragic event at a convent in Romania. Alina travels to reunite with her childhood best friend Voichita, who has become a nun at a small convent. She receives a less-than-enthusiastic reception from Voichita, and in her shock and sorrow, Alina falls ill. With her lack of interest in religion and her inappropriate behaviour, the nuns soon suspect she is possessed by the devil.
