Industry says big “thank you” to agents at Travelweek’s Future of Travel event

TORONTO — It was a prize extravaganza at ‘Future of Travel: Agent Appreciation,’ Travelweek’s latest installment of its hugely successful online conference series.

Taking place May 31, the online event, launched in celebration of Travel Agent Month, featured 100 prize giveaways that included everything from airline tickets and hotel nights, to gift cards and exclusive gifts.

To watch the event in its entirety, click here.

“Travelweek and all of our partners want to say a big thank you and give a big pat on the back to all the travel agents out there who have been working tirelessly and serving their clients, sending people to amazing laces around the world,” said Devin Kinasz, publisher of Travelweek. “As many of you know, this month was Travel Agent Month so we’re piggybacking on that. We have many exciting guests so today is going to be both informative and fun.”

Here are some key updates from the event’s keynote speakers:

Jamie Milton, President, Uniglobe Carefree Travel, the founding travel agency of Travel Agent Day

When asked what inspired the very first Travel Agent Day back in 2011, Milton said she and her colleague, Colleen Lorenzen, had always felt that travel agents deserved their own day to be recognized, much like their staff on Admin Assistance Day. And now, more than a decade later, Travel Agent Day has taken off across Canada and in various parts of the world, with a vast number of suppliers offering booking incentives, rewards, prizes and words of appreciation every year. But what Milton really hopes to see from suppliers is competitive commissions and commission protection.

“I think we all deserve fair pay for

the work that’s being done. And I think that’s something that came to light throughout this past winter as being very important to travel agencies,” she said.

Milton also noted that agent resources are another way suppliers can show their appreciation for agents. “Allow us to be more selfserve, to get back to clients more quickly, to take the call wait times away from suppliers. It enables us to be a lot more efficient at our jobs, so the more tools they can give us, the better it is for everybody.”

Guy Young, Chief Engagement Officer, The Travel Corporation

The Travel Corporation, which comprises several brands including Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, Contiki, Uniworld and many more, is seeing major recovery across the board heading into the summer season.

“We are extremely pleased with the way bookings are trending from Canada,” said Young. “In five of the last six months, the number of bookings we’ve taken for each of those months has exceeded what we did in 2019.”

Adding that there’s still some capacity available for summer departures, from the May through September peak season, Young noted that The Travel Corporation, along with most touring brands, have the advantage

of pre-contracts in place for the majority of their space.

“I’m hearing from travel advisors that it’s very difficult to find space in the summer in Europe, and if they can find space, it’s very expensive. So we have this great advantage where we’ve pre-booked all our space. I would certainly encourage advisors, if their clients are looking to travel to Europe in the summer, to reach out to one of our brands because we do have some space left.”

Lorine Charles-St. Jules, CEO, Saint Lucia Tourism Authority

The island of Saint Lucia is experiencing a strong rebound, as St. Jules noted. Since the destination reopened to international visitors, and coupled with Canada’s elimination of all COVID-19 travel requirements, “we’ve seen a slew of Canadians coming in, particularly this quarter,” said St. Jules.

Travel agents can take advantage of several key resources from the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, including its popular Saint Lucia Expert (SLEx) program, its YouTube channel and an annual travel agent incentive program called Saint Lucia Agent Months (SLAM) during which agents can run their own fams between June and November, as well as an array of digital assets and monthly incentives.

“We appreciate all the business that

travel agents bring to us. We have a team here who is in daily contact with them – no question, no query is too small for us. We’ll respond to you daily to let you know how to better sell Saint Lucia,” said St. Jules.

Armando Mendonca, President, AMpm Canada / Trade Liaison, Canada for the Vienna Tourist Board, and Elka Bachner, B2B Relations, Vienna Tourist Board

The pandemic didn’t stop the city of Vienna from growing and developing new offerings, as Mendonca noted.

“Vienna kept on building within the protocol guidelines and developed a virtual showcase series highlighting the August 2020 reopening of the Freud museum after extensive renovations, in addition to the Albertina Modern museum in March 2021,” he said. “Last August, after a three-year hiatus, I visited the city and the vibe and aesthetic have been enhanced with more hotel options and culinary delights. Our hoteliers boast an increase in Canadian arrivals, now sitting at 60% from 2019, and we’ll undoubtedly exceed these statistics with the summer lift just around the corner.”

Air Canada launched nonstop service between Toronto and Vienna in 2019 and currently offers daily flights from May 23 to Oct. 23, which will reduce to 5x weekly for the winter season. Austrian Airlines also launched in tandem with Air Canada nonstop service from Montreal to Vienna, flying 5x/weekly and reducing to 3/weekly during the winter.

Bachner made sure to thank travel agents for their continued support throughout the pandemic and invited them all to sign up for the Vienna Experts Club International Program, “a fabulous program that offers current and up-to-date information on Vienna and exclusive discounts.” Click here for details.

Amanda Morris, Director of Sales, Canada, Playa Resorts

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Playa Resorts has plenty for travel agents to be excited about, said Morris, from new resorts like Seadust Cancun and Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya, to agent resources and programs, including its newly revamped AgentCash+ platform featuring handy property fact sheets, consumer-friendly webinars and more. Morris also encouraged agents to check out Playa’s Media Library where they can download photos and videos to use on social media or to print pull-up banners and other marketing materials, and sign up for fams to view Playa’s properties.

“We have each of our BDMs typically doing 3-4 fams every year to each of our destinations, giving agents an opportunity to come down and experience the properties for themselves,” said Morris. “We are growing quickly and constantly adding to our portfolio. We’re celebrating our 10th birthday this year and there’s been a lot of rapid growth within those 10 years.”

Casey Canevari, Senior Manager, Global Trade, Brand USA

Citing data from the Conference Board of Canada, he noted that in January/February of this year, 4.76 million Canadians returned home from an out-of-country overnight trip. Of that, 3.1 million came from the United States.

“That’s 90% of what was recorded in 2019, which is just absolutely fantastic and shows that with the borders open, people are coming across and they’re coming in strong,” said Canevari. “I have been traversing all over Canada these past two weeks, working on one of our films and speaking to a lot of travel agents. They’re saying that now that the border has reopened and all flight restrictions have been removed, those numbers are projected to go up and up, which is fantastic for us here at Brand USA.”

Everyone is excited about AmaWaterways’ river cruises in Colombia, the industry’s first to set sail on the Magdalena River. Starting in December 2023, there will be two seven-night itineraries with pre- and post-cruise land programs to choose from, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla onboard the AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia.

Noting how the ships’ architect is actually from Medellin, Colombia, Karst said the feedback she has received from travel agents about Colombia has been extraordinary and that demand has been very high.

Write to Cindy

In light of the United States fi nally dropping its COVID-19 vaccine mandate for air travellers on May 12, 2023, Canevari said he’s expecting the relaxed rules to ramp up flights and visitation into the U.S. heading into the summer months.

“Group space is already filling up on both ships. We are so pleased with the reaction from our guests and our travel advisors – they are as excited as we are to explore this magical destination,” said Karst. “We are considered pioneers, as we open up new opportunities for our advisors and guests.”

The Vienna Tourist Board has signed a new preferred partnership with The 1000 as part of its efforts to expand its presence in the leisure product market.

Since launching in fall 2021, The 1000 – an exclusive club of wholly-verified, top-producing travel advisors from around the world – has continued to grow exponentially, including in Canada.

Said Elke Bachner, B2B Relations for the Vienna Tourist Board: “Our partnership enhances the Vienna Tourist Board’s reach of qualified ‘The 1000’ advisors, which we feel complements the calibre of product and services Vienna has to offer.

Bachner also noted that the partnership will help increase membership of the Tourist Board’s learning platform, Vienna Experts Club International (VECI), which provides a comprehensive insider’s look into the destination and offers reduced or free entrance to Viennese museums, concerts, restaurants and sightseeing excursions.

Jeff Sirota, Co-Founder of The 1000, said the club is excited to partner with the Vienna Tourist Board “as we continue to expand our supplier partnerships in order to provide stronger connections and expanded business opportunities for members of the world’s only collective of verified, vetted travel advisors.”

This year, Vienna will be celebrating a milestone anniversary: the 300th anniversary of the Belvedere Palace, which was originally built in 1723 as a summer residence for the famous military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy. Now a museum, the palace will commemorate the milestone with a major exhibition featuring an art collection that spans 800 years, from the Middle Ages to present day.

This year also marks the 150th anniversary of Vienna’s World Fair, credited for catapulting the city to the forefront of the world stage, as well as the 125th anniversary of the iconic Imperial Hotel, which has hosted such famous guests as Queen Elizabeth II and Charlie Chaplin.

Air Canada offers daily nonstop service from Toronto to Vienna from May 23, 2023 through to Oct. 23, 2023, reducing to 5x/weekly during the winter. Austrian Airlines also offers nonstop yearly service from Montreal to Vienna.

Brand USA screens latest film for Canadian travel agents

Brand USA is fresh off a six-city roadshow across Canada during which it trained 409 travel advisors with a screening of its third big-screen film.

Launched in collaboration with Collette, the tour kicked off on April 25, 2023 with stops in Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. In each city, the screening also included a networking reception and a prize draw with the chance to win two tickets, provided by United Airlines, to the United States.

Brand USA senior manager Casey Canevari emceed the events and showcased the many travel trade resources available to travel advisors, including the organization’s travel trade website, the USA Discovery Program, an online travel agent training program, Road Trips USA, which showcases multi-state fly-drive itineraries across all states and territories, GO USA TV, an online streaming service with access to over 400 destinations, and much more. Access to all the resources and presentation used during the film can be found here.

Collette CEO Dan Sullivan Jr. also appeared at the Ottawa screening on April 25 to kick off the six-city tour. Herrington joined him in Ottawa before helping to wrap up the tour in Vancouver on May 10.

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, ‘Into Nature’s Wild’ aims to inform,

inspire and entertain the travel trade by following two protagonists: Native American astronaut John Herrington, and Alaskan pilot and youth advocate Ariel Tweto. The film features some of the most beautiful but lesser-known landscapes in the country, from the wilds of Alaska to the Oregon coast and the Appalachian Trail.

‘Into Nature’s Wild’ is the third collaborative feature film produced between MacGillivray Freeman Films and Brand USA, and is part of Brand USA’s multi-screen strategy to inspire and invite travellers from around the world to discover all that the United States offers.

As the destination marketing organization for the United States, Brand USA is tasked with increasing international visitation to the U.S. in order to fuel the economy and enhance the country’s image worldwide. According to studies by Oxford Economics, over the past eight years, the organization’s marketing initiatives have helped welcome 7.7 million incremental visitors to the USA, benefitting the U.S. economy with more than US$56 billion in total economic impact and supporting, on average, more than 45,000 incremental jobs a year.

TTC Tour Brands’ ‘Big Tour Study’ includes feedback from 1,800+ Canadian travellers

New findings from TTC Tour Brands’ first-ever annual ‘Big Tour Study’ sheds light on the travel preferences of travellers worldwide, including Canadians.

More than 1,800 Canadian TTC Tour travellers took part in the global survey, revealing vacationers’ motivations for choosing guided vacations, says the company. The poll underlines the latest tour trends for travel advisors booking open-aged brands Trafalgar, Luxury Gold, Insight Vacations, Brendan Vacations and Costsaver.

“We strive to create the most knowledgeable and resourceful advisor community in the industry and continue to identify ways to better support our partners in their business,” said Guy Young, Chief Engagement Officer of TTC Tour Brands. “This comprehensive annual study will continuously demonstrate what the thousands of TTC tour travellers seek in their travel experience and serve as an asset for travel advisors, arming them with the insights they need to make the sale.”

Young added: “Beyond knowing the in’s-and-out’s of each brand and itinerary, understanding traveller sentiment and purchase consideration is crucial information that our advisors need in their pockets to personally

pair each traveller with the right travel experience for them – from premium to value, luxury or special interest.”

The Big Tour Study surveyed 1,896 respondents across Canada. Respondents were majority female (69%), aged 55+ (91%) and retired (67%) with average household income of $100,000.

Key insights from the Big Tour Study include:

• Hidden gems are just as important as landmark travel experiences. The majority of TTC Tour travellers cite bucket list travel experiences as the top motivator for going guided (55%) but ranking as even more important is the desire to experience those off-the-beaten path moments that you may only fi nd through an expertly guided tour (61%).

• Guided tours give assurance in destination and logistical expertise. Findings suggest that tour travellers choose guided tours for the assurance of expertise, with 68% of TTC travellers trusting that TTC organizers are the utmost experts in planning an all-around ideal travel experience.

• New cultures and new countries drive higher spending, more bookings. New cultures (70%) and ticking off a new country (69%) are driving

factors for booking a tour, according to the study. TTC says travel advisors can convert more sales by diving into the itinerary highlights in new destinations with rich culture elements, adding “these travellers are also open to spending more on travel to guarantee a premium (31%) and personalized experience (40%).”

• Tour travellers seek connection with like-minded travellers. Traveling with a tour provides guests the opportunity to easily connect with like-minded travellers, and nearly half of tour travellers cited this is something they seek in their guided travel experience. This is a key sales point when advising clients on the benefits of going guided or traveling solo.

• Two-week European getaways are most popular with working professionals. According to the study, the majority of Canadian working professionals who book with TTC Tour are opting for tours between 8-14 days, which aligns with Canada’s PTO (paid time off) policy. Retirees are 16% more likely to book a tour 15+days compared to working professionals in Canada. The top regions of interest are Europe & Britain (86%) with the top destinations being Italy (37%) and England (36%).

Antigua and Barbuda launch new ‘And’ campaign

If you ask the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), they’ll tell you that Antigua and Barbuda may have become a victim of its own success.

After consistent exposure to the virtues of each island, some travellers have built their itineraries on the false assumption that it’s either Antigua or Barbuda. In doing so, they limit their vacation experience to just one of these sublime sister island.

The destination’s new 2023 campaign, appropriately titled ‘And,’ is a creative undertaking to right this wrong. The campaign’s goal is simple: to bring ‘And’ back with a vengeance. Like rum and punch, these unique tropical havens deserve to be celebrated and enjoyed together.

Antigua absolutely charms with rolling green hills that gently merge into azure waters and spectacular sunsets that rise over Falmouth Harbour. On the colourful streets of St. John’s, the soul of the island comes alive in the antique architecture, storied churches and galleries. For a glimpse into Antigua’s cultural heritage, Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO-recognized fort, has been preserved with staggering authenticity, while the rocky terrain of Devil’s Bridge National Park offers stunning photo ops. Other must-see and must-do offerings include deepsea fishing, world-class spas, and the iconic clifftop eatery Sheer Rocks.

To the north, Barbuda is known for being an unspoiled Caribbean destination, home to vibrant reefs and coastal caves that eventually give way to a massive inland lagoon where red-throated Frigatebirds gather for spirited mating displays. Barbuda’s sparse population is part of its appeal, allowing visitors to truly unwind and escape from the everyday. Its world-renowned pink sand beaches

need to be seen to be believed, and its luxury offerings truly impress, including the Robert De Niro-owned Nobu with its signature restaurant right on the water, and the lavishly-appointed Barbuda Belle beach house. And though Antigua may have cornered the market in sailing with its high-profile annual regatta, Barbuda’s snorkelling and diving deserves special acclaim.

Infrastructure between the two islands is improving, allowing travellers to hop between the two sisters by boat or plane. A barbecue lunch in St. John’s before a day’s excursion to Codrington Lagoon, or a restorative stay at the Barbuda Belle coupled with sailing in English Harbour – these are the hallmarks of a new hybrid itinerary that all travellers should consider.

Earn your spot at G Adventures’ 2023 Change Makers Summit

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, G Adventures is bringing back its popular agent incentive program, Change Makers.

With the program, agents are able to earn their way to the company’s global summit, which will be held this year from Sept. 22-28 in a yet-to-berevealed destination.

The campaign incentivizes agents to focus on changing people’s lives through travel by booking G Adventures trips. Agents who successfully earn a place at the Change Makers Summit will see firsthand how their work directly impacts local communities in the destinations G Adventures visits.

To be eligible to earn a space, agents automatically receive one entry per ‘life changed’/traveller booked. The top eight agents from each region will qualify, with an additional five ‘wildcard’ spaces available to each region to allocate to any agent who commits to changing at least one person’s life by making at least one G Adventures booking.

A total of 13 ‘makers of change’ will be chosen from each of G Adventures’ major markets: the UK and Ireland, continental Europe, Canada, the United States, and Australia and New Zealand. The 65 agents will be brought together at the summit, which will also include members of G Adventures’ team of global purpose specialists and senior leaders from around the world.

Other highlights of the week-long event include visits to ‘G for Good’ community tourism projects built together with G Adventures’ non-profit

partner, Planeterra, as well as a fullday experience with guest speakers and a special party night.

“The feedback following our inaugural Change Makers Summit in 2019 was incredible. At G Adventures, we change the lives of our travellers when they choose to explore the world with us, and as the pioneers of community tourism we change the lives of people in the places we go. We’re so excited to not just welcome our valued agency partners on this special trip, but to also celebrate the return to travel with them,” said David Green, managing director for G Adventures in Canada.

The Change Makers challenge went live on March 1, 2023 and will run until June 30, 2023. Agents can visit https://sherpa.gadventures.com/ change-makers/ and log into Sherpa, or speak to their regional global purpose specialist for more information.

Canada Jetlines inventory available through Amadeus

Travel advisors can now view and book Canada Jetlines inventory via the Amadeus travel platform.

The update follows the airline’s distribution agreement announcement in July 2022.

Amadeus is one of the world’s largest travel technology providers and powers IT systems for the global airline, hospitality and travel agency industries. Joining Amadeus enables Canada Jetlines to enhance its geographic reach and target new leisure traveller segments, while also providing travel agents with more selling options.

“Canada Jetlines’ business plan from day one has relied on strategic partnerships with the travel trade,

by offering very competitive earning opportunities for those travel agents who support our flights. We are excited to be able to distribute our seats through the Amadeus travel platform, placing our content in the hands of agents around the world,” said Duncan Bureau, Canada Jetlines’ Chief Commercial Officer.

“Since going live on the Amadeus travel platform, we have seen a significant increase in sales, which was expected, and we are pleased with

these results,” he added.

Kamal Singhee, VP Airlines, North America, Amadeus, said the company is “happy to enable Canada Jetlines to increase its global reach as the airline continues to grow sales with travel agencies around the world.”

Earlier this year Canada Jetlines announced new markets to Las Vegas and Cancun, which began operations in February and March, respectively. The airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

Flanders’ top culinary ambassadors unite to promote the destination

A new alliance of top culinary ambassadors is set to position Flanders, Belgium as a major foodie destination.

A total of 21 head chefs, chocolatiers, brewers, hosts and food manufacturers from Flanders have been tasked to promote the city as a culinary destination at home and beyond with a new initiative called

‘Ambassadors of GOESTING.’

Initiated by VISITFLANDERS, the campaign aims to promote the rich culinary heritage of Flanders through untold stories about its robust Flemish food culture.

“Flemings are real epicureans, good food and drinks are deeply rooted in their DNA. They come to our restaurants in large numbers and with great enthusiasm, which allows me to fully and continuously develop my profession. The fact that I can be part of a collective of passionate culinary professionals is fantastic. I am proud to be able to further develop and propagate the culinary wealth of Flanders together with them,” says Wim Ballieu.

WHAT DOES GOESTING MEAN?

In Flanders, everyone knows what GOESTING means, but what gives people GOESTING is different for everyone. The term is commonly used in Flanders and roughly translates to a craving for food in the context of seduction, teasing and appetite. There is no defined translation in English for it. In simple terms, it is open to everyone’s individual interpretation and discovery.

THE GOESTING MANIFESTO

The alliance comprises a group of professionals who are responsible for: elevating the profile of local dishes and products; promoting Flanders

as a food destination; informing the public about how food impacts society, nature and health; working in a way that uses food for the greater good; anticipating what Flanders’ culinary future has to offer; extending Flanders’ (inter)national network in food; operating under the umbrella of Flanders; co-existing as a collective, not a business; and uniting in the belief that “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

WestJet, ALPA agreement ratified; Swoop will be integrated into WestJet

CALGARY — WestJet Group has announced the ratification of the second collective bargaining agreement between WestJet and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the certified union representing WestJet and Swoop pilots.

“The WestJet Group is pleased to have reached an industry-leading agreement in negotiation with ALPA that recognizes the value and instrumental contributions of our current and future pilots,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet Group, Chief Executive Officer. “This agreement bolsters our ability to provide certainty and career opportunities across our organization for years to come while ensuring the competitive sustainability of the WestJet Group.”

The agreement is in effect from Jan. 1, 2023, and will be in place until Dec. 31, 2026.

SWOOP INTEGRATION

In a follow-up to a report last month, the agreement between WestJet Group and the pilots union includes the condition that Swoop must be fully integrated into WestJet.

WestJet says that through an expedited process, the airline anticipates a full integration into its mainline operations by the end of October.

To avoid traveller impact, Swoop will operate its existing network through to the end of its published schedule on October 28. Swoop employees will move to WestJet.

“The WestJet Group is confident in the outcome of this negotiated decision and the path forward to integrate Swoop into WestJet’s operations,” said

von Hoensbroech. “We continue our strategy toward providing reliable, affordable travel across the WestJet Group, leveraging the valuable experiences and learnings from the Swoop business model. This integration will enhance our ability to serve a broader spectrum of guests. Instead of only 16 aircraft serving the ultralow-cost market, each aircraft, in our 180-strong fleet, will offer ultra-affordable travel options through to a premium inflight experience.”

WestJet celebrates two new routes out of Calgary and Edmonton

CALGARY — WestJet is celebrating the start of two new routes: Calgary-Washington D.C., and Edmonton-Minneapolis.

The airline’s first-ever service between Calgary and Washington D.C. launched on June 2 with the departure of WS1618, the first of three weekly flights that will travel between the two cities this summer. With the new route, along with new service to Detroit and the restoration of service to an expansive list of U.S. destinations, WestJet has increased its Calgary transborder capacity by 46% compared to summer 2022. It now

offers direct service from Calgary to 20 U.S. destinations.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating the inauguration of our service between Calgary and Washington D.C., forming yet another meaningful connection between our home hub in Calgary and our southern neighbours that will provide newfound, seamless access to the world-renowned monuments in the capital city of the United States,” said Chris Avery, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Commercial Development.

Also launching on June 2 was WestJet’s nonstop transborder service between Edmonton and Minneapolis. With the inclusion of Minneapolis to Edmonton’s network, WestJet has increased Edmonton’s transborder capacity this summer by 150%, and its total network capacity by over 40%, marking the airline’s largest network expansion from a single city in its history.

Edmonton-Minneapolis service will run 5x/weekly this summer. Plus, through WestJet’s longstanding partnership with Delta Air Lines, guests connecting through Minneapolis will arrive in one of Delta’s major hubs, gaining access to a vast network of U.S. destinations including Boston, Miami, New York, Washington D.C. and more, on a single purchased ticket with check-in for all flights at the first departure, baggage tagged to their final destination and lounge access for select guests.

ACTA, CATO want transparency on Comp Fund changes

TORONTO — Two hours after ACTA and CATO issued a joint statement protesting the lack of transparency so far in the TICO funding review, TICO released its own statement in response.

In September 2022 TICO announced it was initiating a review process that includes an end-to-end look at TICO’s current funding framework, as well as a full review of the Compensation Fund.

It’s the most comprehensive review in TICO’s 25-year history, and as TICO CEO Richard Smart told trade media at the September 2022 press conference, “all options are on the table” for the Comp Fund, from a consumer-pay model, to a risk-based model, to eliminating the Fund altogether.

At that time, Smart noted that over the course of its 25-year history TICO has facilitated close to $5 million in restitution, and paid out $14.8 million from the Fund, to assist 24,037 consumers.

As part of a process that started back in 2016 and 2017, TICO made a number of recommendations to Ontario’s then-Liberal government for changes to the Travel Industry Act.

People

Many of those recommendations were implemented – but not the consumer-pay model.

In January 2020, just before the pandemic, industry groups including ACTA and CATO voiced their frustration with the Comp Fund stalemate. At that time, both groups said it was clear that despite extensive lobbying efforts, the Ontario government did not intend to revise the funding model.

In January 2023 TICO provided an update on the review process.

ACTA & CATO STATEMENT

On June 8 ACTA and CATO released a joint statement, raising the issue of what they say is a lack of transparency in the TICO funding review.

Here is the statement in full:

“Earlier this year, TICO announced the launch of the largest review of its funding framework and fee structure since inception.

“However, ACTA and CATO have been kept largely in the dark on the financial impact on TICO registrants.

Cruise industry veteran Cheryl Jiffo now onboard with Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions has announced Cheryl Jiffo as its new North America Sales Representative. Jiffo is now supporting Aqua Expeditions’ sales initiatives in Canada and the U.S. alongside Monika Weinsoft, Regional Director of Sales. With more than 15 years of experience in the luxury industry, Jiffo will focus on identifying new opportunities, developing relationships with key accounts, product training and driving sales growth all aimed at strengthening the positioning of Aqua’s fleet of five ships, which operate seven different luxury experiences. She previously held positions at Virgin Voyages, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Expedia Cruises.

“This comprehensive review includes modernization of TICO’s current funding framework to ensure sustainable operations of TICO, as well as a full review of the Compensation Fund and associated contributions.

“‘Travel registrants will once again be called upon to pay the rising and staggering costs of an inadequate and costly system that doesn’t offer very much to consumers. TICO’s core mandate being consumer protection,’ said Jean Hébert, CATO Executive Director.

“CATO and ACTA have joined forces once again to speak out about shared concerns about the provincial regulator and in particular their opposition to maintaining the current registrant fee system to fund the Ontario Consumer Compensation Fund.

“‘While both organizations applaud the review of TICO, a full review of all TICO programs and administrative costs is needed,’ said Wendy Paradis, ACTA President. “We hope the current audit conducted by the office of the Ontario Auditor General – dubbed the ‘Value for Money audit’ – will provide positive results and responses to our concerns. However, we are very concerned that nowhere does it appear to mention moving to a consumer ‘insurance’ contribution model, that we have long been advocating.’

“Hébert said that ACTA and CATO will not stay silent until they are informed of the final decision. ‘We will mobilize to make sure TICO and the Ontario government will consider our recommendations and stop placing this unfair and uncompetitive burden on travel businesses.’

34 | TRAVELWEEK | June 15, 2023
NEWS
ACTA AND CATO HAVE BEEN KEPT LARGELY IN THE DARK ON THE FINANCIAL IMPACT ON TICO REGISTRANTS.

“‘This is the biggest fee review in TICO’s history and yet when we met with TICO’s consultants, we have been provided with very partial information and no fi nancial impact analysis on the industry. We do not appreciate being kept in the dark, we do not appreciate being told that our asks will once again be ignored without any reason or explanation,’ said Hébert.

“‘We are extremely frustrated with the process,’ said Paradis. ‘Since the pandemic, the travel industry is still struggling to recover from the decimating effects of the COVID-19 health and financial crisis. Travel businesses in Ontario are struggling with a post-pandemic debt load that is significant.’

“Both ACTA and CATO have long demanded a new funding model that will provide a fairer playing field and real protection to the consumer. The two associations have been working together and increased their advocacy efforts on this review process and have called for:

• A legislated Consumer ‘insurance’ contribution system similar to the one in Québec for an adequate Compensation Fund and real protection. In Québec, the consumer pays for that protection approximately $3.50 per $1,000 in travel expense.

• Full review of TICO programs and expenses

• Fix the Compensation Fund or eliminate it

• Exempt corporate travel agency clients from Fund

“‘We are very concerned that after many, many years of the industry calling for a fairer funding model of TICO  where the consumer is aware of the benefits of paying into an insurance program and receives better protection – once again our demands have been ignored. The burden of enhanced consumer protection will continue to be placed squarely on the industry and at a higher cost than ever,’ said Paradis.”

TICO STATEMENT

TICO issued its own statement, from TICO CEO Richard Smart, in response:

“TICO is actively conducting a comprehensive review of its funding framework, including the Compensation Fund.

“Since the start of the review, we have been committed to this being a transparent process.

“We have said that all funding options were on the table and would be explored and considered for a future funding model.

“As part of the review, a variety of stakeholders have been engaged to provide their input, including the trade associations, registrants, and Ontario consumers.

“Jurisdictional scans were conducted to understand models in other provinces and countries, their successes and also their setbacks.

“The final recommended approach is subject to a review by the Ontario government prior to being shared publicly.

“Once released, all registrants will have an opportunity to provide their feedback through a broad consultation process.

“The goal of the future funding framework is an innovative funding model that meets the needs of consumer protection today and the future.”

Air Canada inaugurates two international flights from Montreal

MONTREAL — Air Canada celebrated not one, but two inaugural international flights from Montreal on June 2. Its nonstop, year-round service to Toulouse, France marks the airline’s

fourth destinations in France and the only year-round service between North America and southwestern France.

In addition, Air Canada’s seasonal services from Montreal to Copenhagen, Denmark complement its yearround services to the Danish capital from Toronto.

“We are very excited to have launched our long-awaited, year-round new flights between our Montreal global hub to the French-speaking world, and Toulouse!” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada. “Not only are we connecting two significant business cities in the international aerospace industry, we are establishing another convenient link to France and providing travellers from Toulouse connections to a wide variety of destinations via our Montreal hub.”

He added that the airline is also thrilled to inaugurate its second route from Canada to Copenhagen, “offering travellers from both sides of the Atlantic more choices to visit and explore each other’s countries.”

Flights to Toulouse operate on an Airbus A330 aircraft featuring three classes of service, one of which was recently outfitted with special diagnostics sensors in partnership with In-Service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS), an international non-profit that utilizes commercial aircraft as a global observation platform of climate change and air quality.

Montreal-Toulouse flights depart year round on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, as of June 1. Toulouse-Montreal flights depart year-round on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays as of June 2.

Flair tops Canadian airlines with average number of complaints per 100 flights: CTA

TORONTO — The Canadian Transportation Agency says Flair Airlines Ltd. has the highest number of complaints per 100 flights of all the major airlines in Canada, as airlines have had a rocky recovery year with delayed and cancelled flights.

Between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023, Flair saw an average of 15.3 complaints per 100 flights.

Back in March, Flair saw four of its leased planes seized because of overdue payments, causing hundreds of cancelled flights.

Sunwing Airlines Inc. came second at 13.8 complaints per 100 flights, and Swoop Inc. was third at 13.2.

Meanwhile, WestJet had 6.6 complaints per 100 flights, and Air Canada had 4.3.

As demand for air travel soars in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines have at times struggled to keep up with the past year seeing headlines about cancellations, delays and packed, chaotic airports.

First all-in Marriott-branded hotel opening 2024

CANCUN — The former Marriott Cancun Resort will reopen in early 2024 as an all-inclusive renamed Marriott Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort.

The resort will become the first Marriott-branded all-inclusive resort in the world.

The former Marriott Cancun Resort closed its doors in March to undergo an extensive renovation for the conversion.

The announcement came the same day that competitor Hyatt Hotels Corporation revealed its own big Cancun news: Hyatt Vivid Grand Island, an adults-only resort, and right next door, the family-friendly 616room luxury resort Dreams Grand Island, will also open in early 2024 in Cancun.

It’s also the latest step in Marriott International’s quest to grow its all-inclusive footprint. In 2019 Marriott International announced it planned to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in all-inclusive resort product.

Marriott and its competitors may be relative newcomers to an all-inclusive market already dominated in Mexico and the Caribbean by Spain-based hotel conglomerates, and other dominant players including Sandals

Resorts. But they’re making up for lost time in a hurry.

“A VERY EXCITING REOPENING”

Marriott International says the former Marriott Cancun Resort has been Marriott International’s legacy property in the Yucatan Peninsula for several decades.

“Travellers will be relieved to discover that they will not be bidding their beloved Marriott Cancun Resort a permanent goodbye, but instead, expecting a very exciting reopening with a more modern product, as the property is being reimagined by Marriott, and utilizing the space to offer a sophisticated twist to the traditional all-inclusive concept,” said Alex Fiz, Area Vice President Caribbean & Managing Director All-Inclusive for Marriott International.

Since 2019 Marriott has grown its All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy portfolio to 31 resorts. The company reports that a “vast number” of its 180 million Marriott Bonvoy members have expressed interest in taking an all-inclusive vacation.

Marriott Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort will debut newly redesigned rooms, suites, lobby, meeting spaces, and public areas, including new restaurant concepts, expansive pools, and a lazy river and waterpark.

The resort began renovations in March 2023. Meanwhile the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa sister resort is open and fully operating.

On Tuesdays, flight #DE2469 departs YEG at 5:50 p.m. and arrives in Frankfurt at 11:15 a.m. (+1 day). Return flight #DE2468 departs FRA at 2:05 p.m. and arrives in YEG at 3:50p.m.

On Fridays, flight #DE2469 departs YEG at 2:35 p.m. and arrives in FRA at 8 a.m. (+1 day). Return flight #DE2468 departs Frankfurt (FRA) at 11:05 a.m. and arrives in YEG at 12:45 p.m.

All flights to and from Edmonton are operated on Boeing 767-300 equipment this summer and feature three classes of service (Economy, Premium and Business).

This is Condor’s fi fth gateway in Canada, joining Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, and Whitehorse.

Condor’s Business Class features lieflat seats, a personal in-seat, premium touch-screen entertainment system, power ports at every seat and premium menus with complimentary non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Special menus are available for children as well as vegetarian, vegan and lactose or gluten-free meals. Business Class passengers also have access to priority check-in and lounge access.

Premium Class features seats with added legroom, leg rests and adjustable headrests, a premium in-flight, in-seat entertainment system with an extended program, USB ports at every seat, premium meals, and complimentary beverages.

Record number of travel agents at 14th annual Jam-Walk, with Jamaica Tourist Board in support of HHJF

TORONTO — The ‘One Love’ vibe was in the air as travel professionals and friends laced up and descended on Toronto’s waterfront at the Palais Royale courtyard patio, ready to hit the boardwalk for the 14th annual Jam-Walk 5km walkathon and brunch.

With another record-breaking year under its belt, the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation (HHJF) event was at capacity with sold-out numbers of 130 participants, 33 of which included members of the travel agent community, eagerly showing their support in record numbers.

Also in attendance were team members from the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), including Angella Bennett, Regional Director, Jamaica Tourist Board Canada. The JTB has been an event sponsor with a strong presence for several years, supporting educational initiatives for young people in Jamaica.

“We’re very proud to be associated with HHJF because it speaks volumes

to their work in Jamaica,” said Bennett. “That is to create an environment where children can learn in a happy space and have the proper classroom with proper Internet and computers. I see how it connects to tourism; this is our future tourism worker.”

This year’s walk raised an unprecedented $105,000 to support the foundation’s 26th school build, Orange Bay Infant School, in Port Antonio, Jamaica, this summer.

The travel agent community made a concerted effort and raised over $9,000.

Moreover, the travel industry’s attendance numbers rose from 10 in 2022 to 33 this year, with numbers expected to more than double in 2024.

“I am overjoyed with the response from the tribal community. Likewise, the travel agent community has shown me that not only are they interested in selling Jamaica, they are also interested in the welfare of the people. And so I’m genuinely thankful for their support, and Jamaica is also thankful,” said Bennett.

HHJF AIMS HIGH

The Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation

has developed and constructed more than 25 Jamaican schools, and is making admirable progress by completing its soon-to-be 26th.

Last year, they completed the Bourne Gordon’s Preschool and Kindergarten in Linstead, Jamaica.

HHJF has set a goal to raise a significant amount of funds to build schools with classrooms fitted with age-appropriate student furniture and essential items that enhance the school, such as kitchens with appliances, staff and student bathrooms, sickbays, fencing, playgrounds, and water harvesting systems.

The foundation’s motto, Participate, Educate, Elevate, believes providing the opportunity for education can eliminate the barriers to a child’s success.

“Our foundation aims for a future where every child can access education regardless of socio-economic status or location. We invite anyone who believes every child should have an equal opportunity to succeed to join us for Jam-walk!” said Karl Hale, HHJF Founder and Chairman.

In addition to fundraising, HHJF annually holds volunteer school builds in Jamaica, allowing organizations and individuals to participate in working holidays.

Team members come together to help build schools while being given time to participate in tours and activities, and construction experience is not required.

Travel advisors who are interested in supporting HHJF can obtain information on donations, the annual Jamrock gala or how to participate in a working holiday can visit www. helpinghandsjamaica.com.

Good lift from Canada for this coming winter, says St. Kitts Tourism Authority

TORONTO — St. Kitts is ready to welcome more Canadians this year.

Thanks to strong and consistent load factors in the 2022-2023 winter season, St. Kitts got a 35% capacity upgrade from Air Canada, with weekly A321 service to the destination.

Not only that, but Air Canada recently showcased its plans for further increasing sun destination services this coming winter. The carrier’s seasonal direct service will return to St. Kitts in early November 2023 and run through the end of April 2024 with a convenient 9:30 a.m. departure time out of Toronto.

A St. Kitts Tourism Authority delegation including Ellison ‘Tommy’ Thompson, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, visited Montreal last month to meet with Air Canada. Forward bookings for the season are already trending ahead of last year.

St. Kitts has been top-of-mind with travellers thanks to the St. Kitts Tourism Authority’s ‘Venture Deeper’ brand campaign, which launched in September 2022. The campaign introduced elements of introspective self-discovery and purpose-driven travel via documentary-style imagery and authentic story telling. Thompson says the destination has been gaining traction with modern travellers looking for more meaningful experiences.

“This year we inspired travellers to dive into our culture, history and beauty in a way that really resonated with those seeking a more authentic, soul-stirring getaway,” said Thompson. “And St. Kitts is now enjoying this incredible momentum of enhanced airlift, industry accolades and record media coverage. There’s a lot of buzz about the destination.”

Thompson also noted that at Virtuoso’s recent annual Symposium in Montreal, the luxury travel network revealed that an analysis of its Canadian client bookings showed St. Kitts trending as one of its ‘top outbound destinations’.

“While it is tempting to rest on our laurels, now is the time to ramp up our efforts even further,” said Thompson. “And we are delighted to unveil a new strategic partnership in Canada that in the coming months will create even more exposure for the island and help us reach new audiences. Stayed tuned on that news to come.”

Construction begins on Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa,

opening spring

2025

OTTAWA — Hard Rock International has broken ground in Canada’s capital.

Construction has officially started on Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, which is expected to be completed in spring 2025. The $350 million construction project is considered to be one of the largest private investment developments currently in Ottawa.

Upon completion the 150-room Hard Rock Hotel will offer 22 suites while an expanded Hard Rock Casino will house 1,500 slot machines, 40 live action table games, Sportsbook, high-limit gaming and a Baccarat room. There’ll also be an 1,800-seat Hard Rock Live theatre with standing room for 2,200, a Rock Shop and Unity Store, and more than 10 restaurants, bars and lounges including the award-winning Hard Rock Café and Council Oak Steakhouse.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 6 at Rideau Carleton Casino, Future Hard Rock, the site of the new facility, which will remain open 24/7 during construction.

“We are excited to be one step closer to bringing our iconic brand and rich music history to the people of Ottawa and the surrounding region,” said Jon Lucas, Chief Operating Officer, Hard Rock International. “I wish to thank the provincial and municipal elected officials who helped us get here today. We are especially grateful to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) who have been incredibly supportive in helping make this possible. We appreciate our partnership with them.”

Since the gaming site was added in February 2000, the City of Ottawa has received approximately $6

million annually and over $93 million in total payments from the OLG for hosting Rideau Carleton Casino, Future Hard Rock within the national capital region. This amount is expected to rise once the expanded facility is fully operational. An additional $1 million plus per year is invested in local sponsorships and nonprofits, benefiting local communities and the people within.

AmaWaterways is the first-ever major river cruise line to sail along the Magdalena River in 2024.

The cruise line will offer two custom-built ships in Colombia: AmaMagdalena, launching this spring with 30 staterooms; and sister ship AmaMelodia with 32 staterooms. The ships offer 237 sq. ft. twin balcony staterooms, a heated pool, a fitness room, a nail salon and a new al fresco dining experience.

Passengers can extend their journey with optional pre-cruise land packages in Medellín and Cartagena, and a post-cruise land package in Panama City.

49-NIGHT SEVEN RIVER JOURNEYS THROUGH EUROPE IN 2024

On the heels of making history with the longest river cruise experience in Europe spanning 45 to 46 nights in 2023, AmaWaterways will debut an even longer Seven River Journeys itinerary  that gives travellers the opportunity to explore an additional country in 2024.

The two 49-night journeys take travellers on a voyage between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Sailing through 15 countries across the entire European continent, passengers will travel along the Rhine and Moselle rivers, through the Main-Danube Canal and cruise the full length of the Danube River including, for the first time, the Danube Delta region. Also a first for the cruise line, travellers can experience this voyage without transferring between ships; the entire river cruise takes place onboard AmaMora.

NEW FLAVORS OF BURGUNDY ITINERARY

AmaWaterways will debut its all-new

Flavors of Burgundy seven-night itinerary in 2024, with pre- and post-cruise land packages in Geneva, Switzerland and Paris. In each destination, travellers get ample leisure time and exclusive excursions.

Carnival’s ‘Your Winning Plan’ competition comes with US$20,000 worth of prizes

MIAMI — Carnival’s new ‘Your Winning Plan’ program offers what the cruise line calls a tremendous business growth opportunity for travel advisors.

Agents will have the opportunity to create and enter their business plan in Carnival’s competition, to be Your Winning Plan’s champion.

The eight-part event and competition series aims to help travel advisors build winning business plans to fast track sales and income.

With the new program, agents will compete for US$20,000 worth of prizes, and also benefit from expertise from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and SBA’s resource partner, the America’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network, as well as from renowned entrepreneur Daymond John from ABC’s reality TV show, ‘Shark Tank’, who will present the grand prize to Your Winning Plan’s champion.

Advisors will also hear from representatives from CLIA, ASTA and Carnival’s business development team with special training on social media, Carnival booking tools and the importance of developing a strong business plan.

Your Winning Plan is open to all travel advisors across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Events will be taking place in seven U.S. cities, plus there will also be an all-virtual event. The grand finale

will also be simulcast virtually. The virtual event is scheduled for Aug. 5, and the grand finale event is set for Houston, TX on Sept. 27.

The competition will choose seven semi-finalists, one from each event, judged by a panel of experts from Carnival, CLIA and ASTA. In addition to a $2,500 prize to use toward implementing their winning business plans, each semi-finalist will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the grand finale event in Houston to compete to be named Your Winning Plan’s champion and receive a $5,000 grand prize.

At the program finale in Houston, attendees will also hear from Carnival President Christine Duffy, Perez and members of Carnival’s leadership team.
