Essential relief supplies are rolling into hurricane-stricken St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland in Jamaica, in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. The storm made landfall in southwest Jamaica on Oct. 28 as a Category 5 hurricane with top winds of 295 kph. The Canadian Red Cross is on site, as more than 18,000 essential items were flown from a warehouse in Mississauga to Jamaica on Oct. 31, where they were to be distributed by Jamaican Red Cross workers. Relief items sent over include shelter kits, blankets, menstrual hygiene products, solar lamps and mosquito nets. Government officials say damage assessment is ongoing.
Cuba has confirmed strong progress in restoring tourism operations across eastern Cuba post-Melissa. Recovery efforts have centred on cleaning affected areas and repairing critical infrastructure such as water, electricity, communications and transportation networks. According to officials, damage to hotel properties was largely cosmetic. Gaviota Hotels, with over 30,000 rooms nationwide, said its major resort destinations in Varadero, Cayo Coco, and Cayo Santa María remain fully operational, with recovery efforts underway at eastern properties.
AIRLINES
Air Transat has launched its inaugural flight from Toronto to Medellín, Colombia, via Cartagena, marking a key milestone in the airline’s expansion in South America. Flight TS158 departed Toronto Pearson on Nov. 1, kicking off twice-weekly, year-round service. The new Toronto-CartagenaMedellín service increases Air Transat’s winter flight frequency to Cartagena and introduces year-round operations for the route. Starting in summer 2026, a similar service will operate from Montreal, extending the existing Montreal-Cartagena flight to Medellín and making it available year-round.
POLICIES
American border officials are preparing to expand the use of facial biometrics at all points of entry and exit. The move will make it mandatory for Canadians to be photographed when entering and leaving the country by air, land and sea. The rule requires all non-U.S. citizens, including Canadians, to take part in the program. The regulation takes effect Dec. 26. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been using facial biometrics for nearly 10 years as a way to confirm the identities of international passengers entering the United States by air. Photos will be stored in a DHS database for up to 75 years.

Travel Leaders Network’s footprint in Canada tops 500 agencies
TORONTO — Travel Leaders Network is reimagining its popular Regional events in Canada with a brand new format launching in 2026.
The program, which will be called Ignite Canada, will replace the network’s usual one-day Regionals in Vancouver, Toronto and either Edmonton or Calgary with two expanded two-day events in Vancouver and Toronto.
The reason behind the change is two-fold, says Christine James, Vice President of TL Network Canada who, along with Lindsay Pearlman, President of Travel Leaders Network, briefed trade media recently at Travel Leaders Network’s 2025 Canada Fall Regional in Toronto.
Expanding to a two-day format will allow the company to pack in more opportunities for learning, training and networking. “With a one-day event, you’re pretty limited because there are just so many workshops and so many supplier presentations,” said James.
Second, the change is driven by strong demand from members seeking more in-depth programming closer to home amid a continued downturn in U.S. travel. While Travel Leaders Network will continue to host its annual Edge conference in the United States, with next year’s event taking place in San Diego from May 3-6, Ignite Canada will offer a robust training and networking option for Canadian members who prefer to attend a domestic event.
“Our members are consumers just like anybody else, and there are a lot of people right now who are uncomfortable travelling to the U.S.,” says Pearlman. “We can either ignore it and tell people it will be fine, which is not the route to go, or we can be cognizant of their needs and concerns are. We have a platform that works well and we‘re now expanding that platform and provide our members with similar content they would get at Edge without having to leave the country.”
James said the company is in the process of securing a venue in Vancouver and negotiating hotel rates. Ignite Canada in Toronto will once again take place at the Toronto Pearson Convention Centre.
Early response from members and supplier partners about Ignite Canada has been overwhelmingly positive. James says suppliers are already signing up even before a venue has been finalized. “They’re all over it,” she said, adding that the new events will complement, not replace, the network’s popular regional mixers in cities such as Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg.
Adding that the company has grown its business in Canada by about 50% over the last three years, Pearlman adds: “We not only need bigger
venues to support our growth, but we also want to create a new kind of environment. This format gives us that opportunity and will help boost member engagement, especially in Western Canada.”
Travel Leaders Network continues to see strong growth across Canada. So far this year, Travel Leaders Network has added 33 new members to its Canadian network, bringing its total to more than 500 agencies.
This momentum is also being seen in sales, with year-to-date results being especially strong. “Our business in Canada is up significantly – doubledigit growth overall,” James noted, adding that the network has also seen a shift in booking patterns. “We’re seeing shorter booking windows as travellers feel more confident making last-minute plans, while advance bookings are also trending up for 2026, with overall business up about 20% compared to this time last year.”

St. Kitts builds momentum in Canada with strong airlift
TORONTO — St. Kitts is heading into the winter travel season with new momentum, boosted by expanded airlift from Canada.
The enhanced airlift, and a simplified eTA entry system, have played a key role in St. Kitts’ growing popularity among Canadian travellers.
During a recent visit to Toronto, Marsha T. Henderson, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Urban Development for St. Kitts, confirmed a 42% increase in seat capacity on its seasonal, nonstop Toronto-St. Kitts service for winter 2025-26. The route will operate Nov. 15 - April 25, upgrading from a 136-seat A319 to the larger 201-seat A321.
“The increased air capacity speaks volumes to the confidence the airline has in the destination’s authentic tourism product,” said the Minister. “Canadians stay longer in St. Kitts than any other travellers, so we anticipate this added capacity will be a welcome option for those seeking alternative destinations this winter.”
Minister Henderson also attributed St. Kitts’ growing popularity to strong partnerships, particularly with the travel trade. Through a new Travel Advisor Board, the first of its kind for the destination, travel advisors can provide feedback, share insights and contribute to the island’s tourism strategy. It builds on the success of the award-winning St. Kitts Your Way (SKY) program, which includes training, immersive webinars, rewards and FAM trips designed to support advisor engagement.

Air France contest offers two tickets from Canada to Paris
TORONTO — Air France is marking an incredible 75 years of continuous service between Canada and Paris – and as part of the celebrations, the airline has launched a contest for its valued Canadian travel advisor partners.
Up for grabs is a pair of tickets from Canada to Paris on Air France in Economy Class.
Since 1950 Air France has played a significant role in transatlantic travel, supporting cultural, personal, and economic exchanges – and helping Canadians discover the world with a distinctive touch of French style and care.
The story began on Oct. 2, 1950, when Air France’s first regular direct flight between Paris and Montreal landed at Dorval airfield, marking the beginning of a lasting relationship between Canada and France.
Since that day the airline has continued to grow its presence in Canada, expanding its network from Montreal to include Toronto, Vancouver, Quebec City and Ottawa.
Today Air France operates up to 36 weekly flights between Canada and France during peak seasons.
The Montreal-Paris route, operated up to four times daily in summer, remains one of the airline’s longest-standing and most valued transatlantic connections.
Throughout the decades, Air France has continued to evolve, introducing new levels of comfort, cuisine, and service on board. From the earliest days of propeller-driven aircraft to today’s state-of-the-art Airbus A350s
and Boeing 787s, the airline’s mission has consistently been to share the best of French innovation and hospitality with every traveller.
To mark this historic anniversary, Air France has launched a special contest exclusively for its travel agent partners across Canada. This initiative serves as a gesture of gratitude for the ongoing support, partnership, and dedication shown by travel professionals over the years. Travel agents have played a vital role in helping Air France welcome more than a million passengers between Canada and France each year. Their expertise and enthusiasm have enabled countless Canadians to explore new destinations in Paris, throughout France, and beyond.
Air France says its new contest for Canadian travel advisors “invites the winners to experience firsthand the comfort and service that continue to define Air France today.”
The airline adds that the contest “stands as both a celebration of shared history and a reflection of the enduring partnership between Air France and the Canadian travel community. With appreciation for the passion, professionalism, and loyalty of its partners, Air France looks forward to many more years of collaboration, connection, and discovery.”
