SPIRITED AWAY ON THE MEKONG
Sailing the Mekong with Scenic River Cruises offers an intimate look at Southeast Asia’s vibrant culture, moving history and the warmth of its people
By Vanessa Lee
THE FASCINATING, enlightening and exotic way of life in Vietnam and Cambodia is on full display as we journey upstream on the mighty Mekong River aboard the fabulous, intimate and all-inclusive Scenic Spirit.
Our luxurious river ship holds just 68 guests in 34 spacious suites,
each with a private balcony, attended to by a delightful crew of 50, including our butler, Soe, who pampers us constantly. The spacious accommodations are lovely, with extremely comfy beds and all the necessary amenities you’d ever want. The staff are a delight, hailing from Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and China,
and we enjoy our time with them, whether we’re with the restaurant servers, the bar staff, reception, spa or housekeeping team. Our Hotel Manager is a marvellous Hungarian woman who we call Timmi. She is one of the finest I have ever sailed with and is an outstanding asset to the Scenic River Cruises brand.
Every evening, as we enjoy pre-dinner cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the lounge, Timmi reviews what we can expect the next day, after which our guides provide more specifics. There is much to listen to and learn, so rapt attention is required and happily provided by all. Scenic River Cruises impresses every step of the way with a seamless and outstanding river and land stay in these countries, culminating with three nights in Siem Reap, home to more than 72 ancient temples – a wonderfully impressive place to end our Mekong sailing. It's a must-see, and our Gala evening at an ancient
temple, courtesy of Scenic, is a spectacular way to say farewell.
From day one, and for the next 12 days, we are in the company of our Vietnamese guides, our Tour Directors for the trip, and they are fantastic. When we arrive in Cambodia, two more guides join us to share their knowledge of the country. In total, there are four guides between us, and each is a delight. Guests are split into two groups, each with a guide, and we become reliant on them and their ministrations along the way. We are captive to their charms and knowledge as we embark on a visually intriguing sailing northward
on the mighty Mekong. We begin in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, a busy metropolis that blends French Colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers.
Our stay is at the famous Caravelle Hotel, which hosted many journalists during the Vietnam War. The rooftop bar is a fascinating spot for a drink with a view, replete with somber photographs of that era.
The Mekong and its surroundings – known as the ‘rice bowl of Asia’ – are full of exotic sights, an array of never-ending ornate temples and the occasional cathedral, monks in saffron robes, and colourful dancers
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
swathed in glittering, exquisite costumes. It's not a pretty river, being mostly brown and silty, but it does have a certain romantic, fascinating charm. It also plays a hugely valuable role as a major trade route. Your curiosity is constantly piqued, as the river can be enticing, always culturally diverse, and filled with things to see and do. Occasionally, it is lush and beautiful, and the bird life we see is tremendous. The entire experience is authentic, sometimes gritty and difficult, especially when we visit a wet market. We tour some villages, noting the local Brahman cattle that live in the same space as their owners. A special day for us includes a visit to a local school where the youngsters have an English lesson. Each of us finds a child to sit with, and we read English books together. I was fortunate to have two little girls who now say ‘banana’ with a very English accent!
From the bustling floating markets in Vietnam to the serene temples of Cambodia, the cruise is a blend of adventure and tranquility. There is vibrant life thriving on the riverbanks, and it is on display wherever we are. Locals cultivate rice paddies, lotus farms and fruit. They raise fish, transport goods and live on the river in boats. Their schools sometimes float, and their shops can be on other vessels, which seems curious but also logical. Sampans are common, and we take one on several shore excursions. It’s an alluring mode of trans-
port evocative of the past.
We begin our trip on a coach from Saigon to My Tho, where we embark on our gorgeous little ship, with a stop for an included lunch along the way. We also have our first lesson about the "Happy Room" – important to us all! We learn that there will usually be a few toilet stops along the way when we are on excursions, which can be lengthy. The "Happy Room" is exactly that – a pit stop, if you will. Our guides impress upon us that some of these happy spots are threestar, possibly four- and occasionally five-star – it's a standing joke. Some guests even bring toilet paper with them – just in case! Scenic is very thoughtful about our schedule and we have appropriate stops for drinks, food and more as we enjoy our shore excursions. There are excellent choices, usually several a day, depending on where our ship is. And before long, we feel immersed in the culture and history of the region.
One option in Cai Be, where we anchor in the middle of the river, is a Sampan ride to Le Longanier. In this French colonial house, we are welcomed with refreshments and enjoy musicians and singers performing traditional Vietnamese songs in their ancestral attire. Others choose to glide through a floating market to soak in the local life, stopping at some cottage industries along the way. All excursions are included in the price, and most of the ones we choose are excellent.
The days on the river unfold and we enjoy our tranquil ship with its inviting restaurant and fine dining choices, including specially themed lunches and dinners. One lunch features 'crawly critters', a delicacy here. We are offered tarantulas, beetles, crickets and other bugs! Some taste them and find them delicious – not I!
There are various sizes of tables and seating is open, which makes meeting people easy, and the food

is delicious. We are a mix of Australians, New Zealanders, Americans, Europeans and a few Canadians. Everyone is lovely and we quickly make friends. The Scenic Spirit features a delightful pool deck that offers shade and proves very popular, even in the rainy season of September, when it can be quite hot. The pool is welcoming, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. There is a top deck where we see some cultural performances, which are most enjoyable. Early in the cruise, we are graced with a performance of the Lion Dance by local teenagers, many of whom are orphans. It's a visual delight and we are charmed yet again by these people, who are so proud of their country and heritage. Other excursions include visiting a fantastic bird sanctuary where we are paddled in boats, winding our way through small streams to see herons, kingfishers, egrets and more. We enjoy rickshaw and tuk-tuk rides (you can negotiate the price before-

hand) and take small boat cruises along the river and adjoining lakes. Activities on our sweet ship include a galley tour, cooking demonstrations, games, a movie night, gym and yoga classes, lectures and port talks to prepare us for what's ahead. We also spend time in the spa, which is fantastic and very inexpensive. One evening, the crew dresses in their country's ceremonial garb while we enjoy cocktail hour. It's sometimes sensory overload on this river cruise but we revel in the atmosphere, the warmth of the people and the enrichment of our lives.
As we arrive in Cambodia, we visit the vibrant, bustling capital, Phnom Penh, with its iconic Royal Palace, traditional Khmer roofs, ornate gilding and the stunning Silver Pagoda. We also visit the former Royal capital of Oudong, founded in 1601, which is lovely and known for its gorgeous pagodas. We see nuns and monks at the many temples we pass by (here, nuns can be male or female, and mostly the monks do not engage with women), and we must all cover our shoulders and knees. The country is known locally as Kampuchea and the people are Khmer. We also learn more about their dark history, the Khmer Rouge and the Killing Fields, and many of
us choose to visit them and the Tuol Sleng Museum. The history of these two countries, with their tragic pasts and future possibilities, is ever-present in our minds.
As we disembark our ship, we drive over five hours to the unforgettable and glorious gem that is Siem Reap and the renowned and timeless beauty of Angkor Wat, the largest religious site in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 1,000 temple structures are located around Siem Reap, making it a spectacular destination. We stay three nights at the gorgeous Raffles Hotel, courtesy
of Scenic, and relax in the delightful grounds and large pool, enjoy drinks in the famed Elephant Bar and luxuriate in the experience. Our visits to remarkable temples, including stunning 12th-century Angkor Wat, amaze us – especially at sunrise when the sun's golden rays light up the stonework and are reflected in the water of the surrounding moat. We enjoy strolling on Pub Street, eating local food and engaging with the friendly residents as we shop for silks and mementos.
Scenic offers a very special Gala Farewell dinner, one of its Scenic Enrich experiences. We are taken at dusk to Prasat Kraven, a small 10th-century temple consisting of five brick towers on a common terrace. Lit torches guide us towards the temple, where we are offered refreshments followed by a magical dinner and show featuring Apsara dancers. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience designed just for Scenic Spirit guests.
Sailing the Mekong on the outstanding Scenic Spirit is an enlightening and rewarding experience, with the opportunity to learn so much about the rich tapestry of cultures and flavours of Southeast Asia. It's a river that offers a unique and memorable sensibility, and above all, it's about the people who have warmly welcomed and hosted us along the way.

FROM LAGOON TO LUXURY
Experience the South Pacific like never before with Paul Gauguin Cruises
By Vanessa Lee
IN THE HEART OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC, where aquamarine lagoons melt into sapphire seas and coconut palms sway in perpetual sunshine, lies one of the most indulgent ways to encounter French Polynesia: with Paul Gauguin Cruises aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin cruise ship. Sleek and intimate, this vessel is not simply a means of transportation but a floating boutique resort, crafted for travellers who seek both immersion in paradise and the comforts of a world-class luxury experience. On a return trip to both Tahiti and the Gauguin, I was delighted to see that the ship is still lovely and, after a recent multimillion-dollar renovation, has reaffirmed its position as one of the most refined and delightful ways to explore the fabled isles of Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea and their island neighbours.
The Gauguin carries 330 guests, offering a rare sense of exclusivity – large enough to host multiple dining venues, lounges and entertainment, yet small enough to feel almost like a private yacht. A crew-to-guest ratio among the highest in the industry ensures guests' needs are anticipated and attended to with charm and efficiency. For the upscale traveller, this balance of privacy, service and connection is a genuine hallmark of the Paul Gauguin experience.
The ship's design is contemporary Polynesian with warm teak finishes, ocean-inspired palettes and stunning artwork that pays homage to its namesake, the post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin who immortalized the colours and people of Tahiti in his canvases. Whispering casual elegance, the ship and its décor are completely in step with the idyllic surroundings.
Guests can enjoy their private haven at sea with 165 spacious staterooms and suites, many with balconies overlooking the South Pacific and its ever-changing shades of turquoise. Thoughtful design places comfort at the forefront with plush bedding, marble bathrooms, generously sized closets and in-room amenities such as stocked minibars refreshed daily. Higher-level accommodations include butler service, ensuring discreet and flawless service.
We enjoyed stellar dining on board The Gauguin with a generous choice of venues and amazing staff in each. The service was genuine, warm, engaging and top-notch, making our experiences in each restaurant wonderful. There were many tables for two, as this is one of the most romantic ships on which to sail. Naturally, the ship attracts honeymooners, those renewing vows and celebrating anniversaries and other special occasions. There were also some younger families and solo travellers who were easily able to meet other guests.
Vista Suite
Tamarind
There are several distinct dining venues from which to choose, each with its own atmosphere and culinary philosophy. Dining with a Polynesian soul, if you will.
L'Etoile is the ship's signature restaurant, offering elegant evening service with rotating menus blending French haute cuisine and Polynesian flavours, often drawing on the bounty of the seas. Think yellowfin tuna tartare with citrus confit or Tahitian vanillainfused lobster, or roasted duck paired with tropical fruit glazes. The desserts are beyond yummy, and the wine list is also excellent, with daily pouring wines included and a French rosé never far away. We invariably chose a table with service from Ryan, who was a marvellous host and a delight to be with.
We loved the more intimate La Veranda for lunch and some of our dinners, often taken al fresco, gazing at blissful views. It combines panoramic ocean views with à la carte dining, usually serving interpretations of local dishes. Themed buffets are offered at lunchtime and there are always burgers, a daily soup and pizzas available. Guests can also make dinner reservations in the evening for a menu that changes every four days during the cruise and also take part in afternoon tea at La Veranda. It became a go-to spot for many.
Poolside, the newly redesigned indoor/outdoor, reservations-required Le Grill delivers a memorable blend of casual chic. Freshly grilled seafood, crisp salads and indulgent island-style desserts make this spot a clear favourite during warm afternoons or for a breezy dinner under lantern-lit skies. And, of course, wherever guests dine, they’ll receive indulgent service with a smile.
There are many magical evenings to be had in paradise, with a sophisticated balance between lively and laid-back. The Gauguin's bars and lounges are inviting, no matter your preferences. We often enjoyed pre-dinner cocktails and live music at La Palette and
sought out Le Grand Salon for live entertainment and after-dinner shows such as dance performances or regional cultural showcases. The Piano Bar is always a popular spot, as is the open deck where we watched many perfect sunsets over stunning Bora Bora or Moorea – with a Mai Tai or a glass of Champagne –the very essence of South Pacific indulgence.
The days on Paul Gauguin can be busy, and much time is spent in the sparkling lagoon waters. The destination is as much of a star as the ship, and it begs to be explored. Guests can choose from snorkelling expeditions, dives (if PADI certified) or swimming with stingrays and sharks – every adventure is amazing, especially when a singing ukulele player accompanies you in the same craft! We enjoyed a particularly amazing morning sail into Rangiroa, gliding through what seemed to be a string of emeralds scattered on a brilliantly blue canvas. ‘Can life be better?’ I thought as nature showered us with her beauty.
Excursions are designed to highlight the region's natural beauty and cultural richness. The ship's watersports team hands out snorkel gear and flippers at the beginning of the cruise, which guests can use during their sailing. There might be a chance for a catamaran sail, kayaking in pristine bays, paddle boarding off the ship's marina platform or relaxing on the brand's private island, Motu Mahana, a highlight of any Paul Gauguin

cruise. Guests can settle into a comfortable lounge chair, snorkel in the lagoon, enjoy a barbecue lunch, freshly made fruity cocktails or any preferred beverage as they loll in the crystalline waters – yes, this is paradise. Just don't sit under a coconut tree!
There are land excursions too, which offer a window into Polynesian life. Options include village visits, hikes to volcanic peaks, exploring lush rainforests and pearl farm tours. The ship’s resident Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins – hosts during each cruise – wear local dress and perform songs, play the ukulele, host games and teach pareo tying and jewelry making, giving guests a glimpse into local culture.
Paul Gauguin Cruises offers a selection of French Polynesia itineraries and pre- and post-stay hotel options. We cruised in December 2024 on a 10-night itinerary, roundtrip from Papeete to the Society Islands and the Tuamotos. We spent quality time in incredibly stunning Bora Bora and Moorea with its jagged peaks, but also cruised to Huahine, Rangiroa, Fakarava and Taha'a with a day at sea during which we relaxed by the newly refreshed pool deck or enjoyed a spa service. Whether we were lazing the day away with a good book, enjoying a cheese or wine tasting, or attending a lecture or dance class, the delightful Paul Gauguin and the isles of French Polynesia set the stage for one of the most amazing trips ever.

WHERE HISTORY FLOWS
Emerald Cruises’ Lower Danube journey offers a window into centuries of conflict, culture and resilience
By Ming Tappin
ON THE LOWER DANUBE, Emerald Cruises’ ‘Enchantment of Eastern Europe’ itineary uncovers centuries of history, heritage and enduring spirit.
“This cruise isn’t about the beautiful things you’ll see on the river, ladies and gentlemen, it’s about getting to know the history and the people who lived through it."
With these words during her welcome briefing, Emerald Sky Cruise Director Mariyana heightens our anticipation for a cruise experience that is different from the rivers that flow through other parts of Europe. As the sun set, we cast off from Giurgiu, Romania, for a week on the Lower Danube through Bulgaria,
Serbia, Croatia and Hungary. For most of us, our journey had begun a day ago in Bucharest, where many fellow travellers shared their excitement at a pre-cruise cocktail party. Over the next week, I meet others – mostly retired couples and groups of friends travelling together – and like me, they're here to see something different.
Emerald Cruises’ Emerald Sky accommodates up to 180 guests and was launched in 2014, but its well-maintained condition conceals its age. The interiors are bright with large, full-length windows, and the décor is pleasantly contemporary. My compact suite has a large window that drops halfway to create an
open-air balcony, where I start each day with a morning coffee.
As Mariyana foretold, the Danube between Romania and Hungary is not noted for its scenery but offers fortresses and castles aplenty. But what it lacks in views is compensated for by an abundance of human history, some triumphant, some tragic, but all enlightening. The lands that comprise present-day Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary were once occupied by the Romans, Slavs, Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians, whose presence is etched in the stones of fortresses and strongholds that guard the shores of these countries and the architecture of the cities within them.
Emerald Sky
Religion also played a dominant role in shaping these lands. In Bulgaria, we hike to the rockhewn monasteries of St. Dimitar Basarbovski, founded by prophets and followers who lived in these lofty caverns to be closer to God. At the Churches of Ivanovo caves, we admire the original frescoes –including one of The Last Supper, painted 120 years before Leonardo Da Vinci created his version. In Belgrade, Serbia, we peek inside the stunning Orthodox Church of Saint Sava, one of the largest in the world. Modelled after Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, its jaw-dropping interiors are adorned with over 160,000 square feet of gold mosaics.
At the border of Romania and Serbia, the Danube is tamed by the Iron Gates Dam – the river’s largest hydropower dam, constructed between 1964 and 1970. I drag myself out of bed at 5:30 a.m. to join several other early birds as Emerald Sky passes through the dam via the Iron Gates Lock. After rising 115 feet upriver, we sail the spectacular Iron Gates gorge, surrounded by limestone cliffs rising sharply
from the water. After breakfast, everyone is on deck to see the face of Dacian King Decebalus carved into the stone cliff face, a massive feat that took 12 sculptors 10 years to complete.
After World War II, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary fell under Communist rule, which lasted until 1989. In Serbia
and Croatia, our tour guides reminisce about growing up in a time when eating a hamburger was a treat and blue jeans were sought-after commodities, but there was job security, free education and healthcare for all. Was Communism a better life? It depends on who you ask, and we had the chance to hear from a Croatian family whose home we visited during our tour from Vukovar. Maya, Ivan and Vera serve us a home-cooked lunch of vegetable soup, potatoes and spinach, meatloaf and apple cake. As we enjoy our meal, the family speaks candidly about life in Croatia, past and present. Turmoil ensued in 1990 during the Yugoslav wars, remnants of which are clearly seen in bullet-ridden homes and bombed buildings as we travel through Vukovar. I begin to comprehend the hardship these people endured and how they have risen above it today.
Arriving in Hungary, we dock outside of Kalocsa, known for its paprika production. We travel to the Bakod Puszta equestrian centre, where Magyar cowboys entertain us with their equestrian skills. Magyars were the original inhabitants of Hungary; their skills and precision in horse-handling came in handy for herding livestock, but also in battle with the many occupiers
King Decebalus
Orthodox Church of Saint Sava

who came through their land.
Emerald Sky has provided a pleasant way to explore the Lower Danube. Before going on daily tours, guests enjoy a bountiful breakfast buffet in the Reflections dining room. But on days with a later start, many head to the late-riser continental breakfast in the Horizon Bar & Lounge. Lunch is also popular here, instead of the dining room, with soups, salads and sandwiches providing a quick yet satisfying meal. Everyone meets for dinner in Reflections Restaurant to catch up on the events of the day. The menu blends local specialties and international fare, served with complimentary regional wines, beer and soft drinks, as it is at lunch.
After a week cruising the quiet Lower Danube, Emerald Sky sails into bustling Budapest at sunset. The imposing Buda castle complex, the striking Chain Bridge and the ornate Parliament Buildings of Hungary’s cosmopolitan capital are quite the contrast to what we have been seeing. After a final dinner, we head to the upper deck for a spectacular evening sail to see the beautifully lit city, a climactic end to an insightful journey. I had come here knowing very little; I now leave with a deeper understanding of the region’s tumultuous history and a compassion for its resilient inhabitants. Mariyana was absolutely right.

LET’S HOLIDAY!
MSC World America is a show-stopping ship designed with Canadian and American travellers in mind
By Vanessa Lee
AS MSC CRUISES’ NEWEST SHIP ARRIVED in Miami this past spring, ‘Let’s holiday!’ became a catchy refrain among guests at the naming ceremony and during a three-day inaugural cruise.
As Godmother Drew Barrymore and Orlando Bloom proclaimed in MSC’s Super Bowl commercial earlier this year, the MSC World America is a remarkable vessel and
a brilliant showpiece for more than 6,000 guests. Not surprising then that the ship’s naming ceremony was equally remarkable, with a pyro-drones show (think fireworks without the fire) over Miami followed by a performance by music icon Gloria Estefan. The festivities also included a welcome address from Captain Dino Sagani and senior MSC leaders, providing a memorable send-off for the second
ship in the World Class series, which joins MSC World Europa and precedes MSC World Atlantic, set to arrive in 2027 from Port Canaveral.
Designed with European style and sensibility, MSC World America is the first ship in MSC’s fleet (currently totalling 23) to have been expressly built with the Canadian and American client in mind. And I can assure you, she’s a winner!
MSC World America at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve
The ship made its historic debut in PortMiami, where MSC Cruises recently opened its state-of-the-art cruise terminal. Looking much like an airport, the massive facility is full of whizzbang features including facial recognition to ensure seamless boarding. The terminal is big enough to allow three MSC Cruises ships to dock simultaneously.
When arriving on board the MSC World America, guests will be wowed. It’s home to seven distinct districts, 19 dining venues, 18 bars and lounges, six spectacular pools, an MSC Formula Racer, a Sportplex and so much more. Each of the seven districts has its own unique atmosphere, facilities and experiences, expertly designed to enhance the onboard experience and ensure guests of all ages can create their one-of-a-kind holiday, whether family-oriented, multi-generational, for couples or singles.
The seven districts include the Zen area on Deck 18 Aft, an adults-only exclusive oasis with panoramic ocean views designed as a haven for swimming, sunning and unwinding in peace. On Decks 19 and 20, you’ll find the Family Aventura, a place packed with adventure options for families and delicious bites. Moving midship on Decks 18 and 19, we discovered the ultimate leisure spot – the Aqua Deck and main pool featuring upbeat music, activities and more drinks and tasty snack options.
Moving inside the ship, there are many venues to discover, especially on Decks 6, 7 and 8, the heartbeat of MSC World America. Here, guests can enjoy the Galleria and a host of bars, restaurants and shopping opportunities. The Terraces on Decks 7 and 8 offer sophisticated entertainment options including DJ sets, karaoke, duelling pianos, live comedy and the first Eataly at Sea featuring a menu that spans

the best of Italian gastronomy. On the Promenade on Deck 8 (one of my favourite places) featuring great ocean views, the new Greek restaurant, Paxos, was a big hit, as was the All-Stars Sports Bar. And this is where the thrilling 11deck Jaw Drop @ The Spiral meets, pumping out thrill-seekers who jumped on from Deck 19. I asked the young man working the dry slide how he knew when people were coming down. “I can hear the screams,” he joked.
And there’s more – so much more to the ship that I think you’ll need to sail and see for yourselves. The Cliffhanger on Deck 20 is an overwater ride at sea, featuring a four-seat swing towering 50 metres above the ocean. Try it for a oneof-a-kind, edge-of-your-seat ride! There’s an entire kid’s area with seven rooms in which Lego is a big
feature, as well as The Harbour family area with an Aquapark, four slides, bumper cars, roller skating and a high trail ropes course.
The entertainment on the ship was fabulous, with a fantastic show – ‘Dirty Dancing in Concert’ – in the World Theatre. Three other shows are debuting, including ‘Hall of Fame’ and ‘Odyssey.’ The stunning Panorama Lounge features two shows – ‘Queen Symphonic’ featuring Queen’s greatest hits, and ‘Cinesonic.’ The spectacular entertainment options on this ship are incredible and included in the fare.
Other highlights for me were the four smaller main restaurants: The Butcher’s Cut; Fizz, the Champagne Bar; Elixir, a mixology bar; and the delicious Chocolatier, Jean-Philippe Maury. The MSC Aurea Spa and the

spacious accommodations, with an unrivalled choice of suites and staterooms to suit every guest, were also key elements of this exciting new ship.
Endless fun around the clock is yours for the taking on board MSC World America. It sails sevenand 14-day itineraries roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean and MSC’s lovely private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. This incredible ship offers a superb vacation for every Canadian, available in Canadian pricing and featuring many inclusions and a new air program. There’s something for everyone, including the marvelous Yacht Club, a ship-within-a-ship, a luxurious option for guests who want more discerning service.

Aranui Cruises expands its fleet with new ship & itinerary
For over 40 years, Aranui Cruises has been guiding adventurous travellers deep into the heart of French Polynesia, uniquely blending cultural immersion with cargo delivery aboard its iconic 230-guest vessel, Aranui 5. Sailing to the far-flung Marquesas Islands –an archipelago of 12 islands located 1,500 kilometres northeast of Tahiti recently designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Aranui 5 offers an experience unlike any other, filled with warm, hospitable people and a vibrant living culture.
On board, guests enjoy a comprehensive range of amenities: a restaurant serving three-course meals accompanied by traditional music and singing, three bars, an outdoor pool, boutique, spa, gym and the world’s first tattoo studio at sea. Evenings come alive with performances by the talented Aranui band, Tamure dance lessons and engaging cultural lectures. The majority of the crew are native to the islands visited, known for their genuine hospitality and deep-rooted knowledge of Polynesian life.
Now, Aranui Cruises is setting sail on an exciting new chapter with the upcoming launch of its second ship, the Aranoa, debuting in 2027. Built in the same pioneering spirit as Aranui 5, Aranoa will chart a new course to the Austral Islands, located 600 kilometres south of
Tahiti. Largely untouched and off the beaten path, the Australs are a place of mystery and raw beauty, where pristine white sands meet vivid turquoise lagoons and dramatic landscapes of mountains and valleys stretch across the horizon.
Like its sister ship, Aranoa is a mixed passengerfreighter vessel, providing essential supplies to remote island communities while inviting guests to explore a lesser-known side of Polynesia. Visitors will experience the Austral Islands’ rich traditions, artistry and natural beauty through meaningful, authentic encounters with local residents.
Designed with sustainability and comfort in mind, Aranoa will accommodate 198 guests across 93 staterooms – 62 of which feature private balconies. Onboard amenities will include two restaurants, two bars, two whirlpools, a boutique, spa, fitness center and a tattoo studio.
Aranui Cruises’ inclusive tourism model continues to support local economies by fostering inter-island connections, creating jobs and promoting cultural exchange. The ship’s name, Aranoa – meaning “awakening” in Tahitian – reflects this mission to open new pathways, both for guests and for the communities served.
The 2027 sailing schedule for Aranoa will be announced later this year, with reservations opening soon. For updates, news, and special offers, visit aranui.com/us/aranoa-the-vessel.

THE SUMPTUOUS ALLURE OF OCEANIA ALLURA
From
artful
interiors to exquisite cuisine, Oceania Allura invites guests to experience the pinnacle of oceanic elegance
By Toby Saltzman
OCEANIA ALLURA IS DESIGNED TO satisfy the most discerning clientele with sumptuous style, superb cuisine and a shipload of rich amenities. Launched in July 2025, Oceania Cruises’ newest vessel – built by Fincantieri in Genoa, with luxe interiors designed by Studio DADO – exudes a luxurious cruising lifestyle that approaches the elite level of Oceania’s sister brand, Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
While cruising the maiden voyage through Adriatic and Mediterranean ports on the 1,200-guest Allura, a sister to Vista, launched in 2023, the spacious design and intimate appeal of its ample public areas, lounges, and pools belied the fully occupied status of the 16deck, 68,000 GRT ship.
Alluring Residential Ambience
On first impression, Allura dazzles. The Atrium Lobby’s floor-to-ceiling glass sculpture sets an exquisite tone for the luxe accoutrements and art befitting this splendid residence at sea.
As DADO designer Greg Walton described, Allura’s all-balcony accommodations – including those with Juliette balconies – are designed for nesting in calm and soothing environments. They range from the smallest Concierge Solo Veranda staterooms at 270 square feet to Veranda staterooms at 291 square feet to larger Penthouse, Oceania and Vista Suites. The grand Owner Suites are 2,200 to 2,400 square feet. I enjoyed my comfortable Concierge Veranda stateroom, which featured a seating area, desk,
spacious bathroom with lovely Aquamar amenities, and a stocked minibar, as well as numerous outlets and USB ports. I appreciated the well-being details, including hypoallergenic carpets made from undyed natural sheep wool, Tranquility mattresses, and silky 1,000-thread-count sheets for a blissful sleep.
Country Club Feel
A veritable floating country club, Allura offers abundant places to relax, indulge and be active. The vast pool deck has shaded pods for lounging in the water and sheltered spaces for guests craving seclusion. Sporty assets include a pickleball court, an 18-hole mini-golf course, a netted-golf driving range, shuffleboard and a running track. The Fitness Center, outfitted with TechnoGym equipment, offers complimentary classes. Myriad complimentary experiential activities include brushing up talent in the Artist Loft; expanding computer, phone and photography skills in the LYNC Digital Center; and learning culinary techniques in the Culinary Center.
Wellness buffs gravitate to the Aquamar Spa & Vitality Center, a sanctuary of calming therapies and beauty treatments that offers access to the outdoor Spa Terrace, featuring an exhilarating thalassotherapy pool and two Jacuzzis overlooking the ship’s bow. This serene haven of tranquility is exclusively available to Concierge-level guests and those with spa appointments. Allura’s in-house physician offers acupuncture and several skin-enhancing treatments.
Oceania Allura
For Culinary Afficionados
For all its physical allure and the caring service provided by its 800 crew, it was Allura’s culinary scene that stirred the most palpable delight among guests. Helmed by two French Master Chefs – Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale in collaboration with Jacques Pépin, Oceania’s original culinary ambassador chef – Allura’s 12 eateries include the Grand Dining Room and four specialty restaurants. These include Polo Grill, Toscana Italian restaurant and the casual Aquamar Kitchen proffering healthy bites, smoothies and zeroproof cocktails made with Lyre’s non-alcoholic “liquors.” Jacques, Chef Pépin’s signature French restaurant, impressed diners with traditional tableside service for Dover Sole Meunière and Crêpes Suzette. At the pan-Asian Red Ginger – renowned for its miso-glazed Sea Bass – I relished tasting the new Nikkei JapanesePeruvian dishes, including ceviche marinated with red tuna, Peruvian-style beef short ribs, and skewers of chicken and beef. I also enjoyed Bao buns stuffed with soft-shell crab tempura and Yuzu cheesecake.
Guests who craved more indulged at the creperie with decadent Bubble Waffles filled with ice cream treats, or at Baristas Bar, where a variety of quiches, croissants and eclairs was served. Culinary aficionados and oenophiles enjoyed participating in the exclusive Gérard Bertrand Cellar Masters wine-pairing lunch hosted by Chef Alexis Quaretti.
Allura showcased Oceania’s desire to engage guests with a local sense of culinary culture while cruising the Italian Riviera by staging a lavish Chefs Market Italian buffet brimming with varieties of cheeses, antipasti, caprese salads, hand-rolled pastas, grilled fish and meats to order. After seconds of fragrant Tuscan fish stew, I barely had room for a puffy cannoli or apricot tart.
Exceptional Itineraries and Excursions
