By Casandra Turnbull It's almost time to award Community Grants and the county is taking a completely different approach this year.

The County of Brant has entered an agreement that will see the Brant Community Foundation (BCF) oversee and deliver the 2024 County of Brant Community Grants Program. It's a radical change from the current process where County staff accepted, reviewed, and graded applications who were then awarded funding based on their score in a variety of required fields. This newer process was just implemented within the last few years, replacing a program that once brought applicants to council chambers to present as delegations.

The Brant Community Foundation acts as a catalyst for donors by allowing named funds to be created to benefit the community, so allocating and distributing funds to help communities and organizations grow is something the Foundation is well equipped to handle.

This 2024 change in process was suggested after county staff took a comprehensive review of the Grants Program, and how other cities and municipalities handled funding requests.

During a February 13th Grant Committee Meeting, members discussed a motion, presented by Heather Boyd, General Manager of Corporate Services, which outlined details on eligibility criteria and included a draft application form.

These types of details must be ratified by council in February before the official grant application window can be announced. County Grants staff and the BCF hope to open the process on March 1st for the entire month. Both County of Brant and BCF staff will be available to assist applicants in making their submissions.

Part of this application process, like in past years, includes reaching out to recipients from the previous grant year. That, says Councillor Jennifer Kyle and Councillor John Peirce, is a part of the application process they could do without.

With proper

communication and advertisement, coupled by the fact that there's always a high interest in the program, reaching out to previous recipients can be time consuming and not fair to new applicants who haven't received funds before and follow the process correctly.

The criteria to even be considered is strict. Eligible organizations must complete all relevant sections of the application form and submit all documents requested, must be either a registered charity of a notfor-profit organization and must have a location and/or presence in the County of Brant. They cannot be in arrears with or involved in any litigation against the municipality and cannot have a primary purpose to provide funds to another or an ineligible organization. Funds are not to be used for any activity or purpose that engages in political activity, supportive of political parties/candidates or lobbying for law / government policy change.

To address the housing crisis, eligible households can apply for any rent-geared-to-income units in Brantford and Brant County, as well as rent supplement units provided by private landlords. In some cases, applicants can choose to remain in their current residence and receive a temporary rent allowance if their landlord agrees to enter an agreement with the city.

These applicants receive priority placement.

Another 149 households hold "urgent priority status" and face imminent homelessness or are already without a home.

The city has set a target of creating 506 new municipally owned and managed affordable housing units in Brantford and Brant by 2030.

Musson expects the current wait times for community housing to decrease once several new construction projects are completed. Notable developments include a 26-unit building at 177 Colborne St. W. in Brantford, a 49-unit development at 170 Trillium Way in Paris, and the rehabilitation of Lucy Marco Place on Queen Street in Brantford, resulting in 54 units.

Musson emphasized that these upcoming developments will primarily focus on one- and twobedroom units, catering to the demographic in greatest need of affordable housing—singles and couples.

During the meeting, MPP Will Bouma and MP Larry Brock were present at the council's request. A strong message was conveyed to them, underscoring the urgent need for increased provincial and federal funding to support affordable housing initiatives. Councilor Miller from the County of Brant raised several pertinent points and unreservedly emphasized the necessity for additional funding.

The meeting also revealed an intriguing statistic: Only 6 percent of households on the waiting list originated from the County of Brant.

A RT S & C U LT U R E County of Brant recognized as one of Ontario’s top communities for 2023 Culture Days County of Brant, ON – The County of Brant is delighted to share that it has been chosen as a top 10 community for the 2023 Ontario Culture Days, ranking 3rd for Top Rural/Small Town.

“We are so pleased with the success of our first Brant Celebrates Culture Days,” said County of Brant Mayor David Bailey. “The County of Brant's inclusion in the top 3 for small towns is a testament to our dedication to promoting and celebrating the arts across Brant, and also reflects the passion and creativity of our residents.”

Culture Days is a national celebration each fall where individuals and groups across Canada are encouraged to celebrate arts, culture and heritage in their communities. The County of Brant celebrated Ontario Culture Days with its inaugural Brant Celebrates Culture Days, an initiative that focused on highlighting arts and culture throughout our communities. Brant Celebrates Culture Days was held from September 23 to October 16, 2023 and featured 34 events presented by local groups and creators.

The County of Brant provided funding to assist eligible organizers to cover the cost of hosting an event. This funding allowed for more groups and creators to participate. Mayor David Bailey contributed funds from his 2023 budget and will reallocate again for 2024.

“We would like to thank Mayor Bailey for supporting and assisting in funding for the first Brant Celebrates Culture Days,” said Kayla Cicman, County of Brant’s Arts, Culture and Heritage

Over 1,000 people visited a total of 34 events County wide to celebrate Brant Culture Days. Events ranged from heritage scavenger hunts to artistic talent on display and even some day long musical performances and more.

COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Museum reopens after brief closure

By Casandra Turnbull The Paris Museum and Historical Society has officially opened the doors to 2024.

After a brief closure to reorganize, catalogue and prepare for the year ahead, Museum staff announced on February 14th that they were open and ready for visitors.

In a Social Media post announcing the reopening, staff revealed “We got some things done while we were closed. Others are still in progress. We organized things behind the scenes that you will never notice, like filing papers, organizing the art shelves, tracking down items without object numbers on them, and reassigning locations. We also did some things you are more likely to notice, like moving the cobblestone houses into the foyer, moving the diorama, and moving the Paris industries into a case.”

All this shifting and rearranging will leave some open space for guest speakers, workshops and meetings.

The timing is impeccable as the Museum prepares to welcome speaker Abel Land on February 25, who will discuss Napoleonic Military in Pop Culture.

Abel is the assistant Curator at the Fashion History Museum in Cambridge. Join Abel at 2 pm as they discuss how pop culture has interpreted the Napoleonic British Military, and how it is so far from the actual truth!

Admission is by donation only. Donations help the Museum preserve Paris’ rich history. If you haven’t visited the Museum before or are new to town and would like to learn more about this quaint community (maybe your fascination is fulled by the Paris Independent’s Chris Whelan who brings his Paris Past column to life each week?) drop by the facility located at 51 William Street – aka – the old Syl Apps Arena.

Paris, Ontario, has a rich history with several prominent families who have played significant roles in shaping the community. These families have made lasting contributions to the development, growth, and cultural heritage of Paris. Here are some of the most prominent families in Paris, Ontario's history: The Capron Family: Hiram Capron, the founder of Paris, had a family that played a significant role in the development and influence of the area. Let's take a closer look at his family members: Mary De Long Capron (wife): Hiram Capron married Mary De Long in February 1824. Mary was by his side as they raised their family in Paris, contributing to the growth and development of the town. Banfield was the name of one of Hiram Capron's sons. It was also the name of Hiram Capron's great, great grandfather. William Street, Charlotte Street, Helen Street and Emily Street were also named in honour of Hiram Capron’s children.

The Hamilton Family: played a significant role in the growth and prosperity of Paris. Paris has the highest concentration of cobblestone buildings in Canada, most were constructed by Levi and his family.

Mr. Penman's Mills, which utilized the waters of the Nith & Grand River, were a prominent feature of the town's landscape. The mills played a crucial role in the local economy and provided employment opportunities for the community.

The Gretzky Family: is another prominent family in Paris. Walter Gretzky, the father of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, attended high school in Paris. The Gretzky family lived on a farm in nearby Canning, Ontario.

The Dalpe Family: is represented

by Zac Dalpe, a professional hockey player currently playing for the Florida Panthers. He hails from Paris and has made a name for himself in the world of hockey.

His mom Lisa Dalpe was a prominent fixture in both local Hockey and the downtown BIA. Zac’s Grandfather Gord Gibson was the town’s Reeve and former business owner of Just the Ticket and Inksater’s along with his daughter Lisa.

These individuals and and many other families have not only brought recognition to Paris through their achievements but have also fostered a sense of pride and community among the residents. Their contributions to sports, arts, and business have made Paris a town worth celebrating.

As we celebrate Family Day, let us acknowledge and honor the legacies of these prominent families and individuals who have played a vital role in shaping Paris’ history. S P O RT S Double take out fun at the Ev Perley Memorial Senior Mixed Bonspiel

The Ev Perley Memorial Senior Mixed Bonspiel is a great in-club spiel, open to members 50 years of age or older.

The spiel has been ongoing for years in honour of longtime member Ev Perley, and is always a day filled with sportsmanship, fun, and friendship. Ev's husband and PCC Grounds & Maintenance manager Bob Perley was on hand for the competition, as well as to award the trophy and prizes to the winning team. This year's winners were the team of Judie Pezzetta, Rick Stewart, Ken Linington, and Barb Neilsen.

Congrats team! As an added layer of fun, the spiel also included ‘Bob the Bunny,’ awarded to any player who made a double take out during their game. The player holding Bob at the end of the game was awarded a free round of drinks for their team. Suffice to say, Bob was a popular bunny!

S P O RT S Junior Boys’ Basketball Team heading to CWOSSA

By George Le Gresley Coming off an exciting quarter final in an overtime period, Tuesday the Panthers Boys’ Junior Basketball team travelled to Brantford Collegiate’s home gym to play their semi- final match.

For the first six minutes the Paris boys were facing a pressure defence where the Mustangs double covered the ball handler, forcing the player to make a pressured pass to a teammate. In spite of this pressure the Panthers were keeping up on the score board when they were tied at 12 points on. From that point until the end of the game the Mustangs spread the point spread until the end of the game and won the game by a large margin.

When the head coach was asked putting aside the semi-final loss, how would he define the season, he replied that “we’re not done”, as they had earned a spot at CWOSSA, the regional championship!

COMMUNITY NEWS Local jobless rate slightly higher than December 2023 MEDIA RELEASE BRANTFORD – The Brantford area jobless rate started the year 2024 off slightly higher in January as compared with the strong finish in December 2023.

Brantford-Brant’s unemployment rate last month was 4.9%, up from December’s 4.3%, according to Statistics Canada’s monthly labour force survey figures, which were released Friday. Canada’s unemployment rate fell to 5.7% last month, while Ontario’s rate was unchanged at 6.2%.

There were signs in January that local employers were looking to fill more positions, and that more people were searching for work.

“Continued economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions and the end of seasonal work are the likely culprits for the percentage increase”, said Danette Dalton, the Workforce Planning Board’s executive director.

“We have seen a somewhat consistent trend at the start of every new year with an increase in the jobless rate as seasonal work wraps up and businesses prepare for the new year.”

Dalton said in addition to the new year employment trend, there is a struggle to balance affordability and sustainability which is on the minds of every business owner and individual these days. It will be important to focus on resiliency moving forward.

January saw 2,075 new job posts – a 32% increase over December – on Grand Erie Jobs, the online job board run by the Workforce Planning Board of Grand

Erie. Meanwhile, the number of job seekers clicking on job posts doubled. The largest share of advertised jobs was in the health care and social assistance field, with 100 postings for nurses, 100 for home support workers, 60 for licensed practical nurses, and another 60 for social and community service workers.

However, retail salesperson remained the most advertised job, with 108, while secondary school teachers and food service supervisors also made the Top 5.

YOUTH NEWS A Teen's Take on Valentine's Day at Middle School “Valentine's Day, at its core, is a reminder to cherish the connections we have, whether they're romantic or platonic” A CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE With Paris’ Stephen L

So, Valentine's Day just wrapped up, and let me tell you, love was definitely in the air at my middle school. I decided to embark on a little quest and interview some of my peers to get the scoop on their Valentine's Day experiences. Spoiler alert: most of them had a special someone to share the day with.

One thing that stood out was the sweet and thoughtful gestures that my fellow middle school Cupids exchanged to show their affection. I mean, who knew that kids could be so creative with expressing love?

From handmade cards adorned with glitter and heart emojis to exchanging chocolate to even handing out plushies, it was heartwarming to see the effort put into making someone feel special.

And yes, you did hear me correctly!

One of my friends gave a special someone a cute plushie with a card attached to it to confess his feelings to her. But it wasn’t only him who figured that it would be a good idea to gift teddy bears and other stuff

surrounding that to special people because I was soon to realize that there were a ton of people holding teddy bears at the end of the day before going home! They must cherry-ish their friendship!

Then, amidst the Valentine's Day buzz, there was this irresistibly charming pair who went above and beyond in expressing their affection. They dedicated time to craft heartfelt letters, preciously listing every reason they appreciate one another. Observing their exchange felt akin to stepping into a real-life romantic movie, each word a scene painting a picture of their deep connection.

As they shared their sentiments, a warm and fuzzy feeling enveloped the air, making it evident that their love story was unfolding in the most genuine and heartfelt way imaginable.

Valentine's Day, at its core, is a reminder to cherish the connections we have, whether they're romantic or platonic. It's a day to express gratitude for the people who make our lives a little brighter, and hey, who doesn't appreciate a day dedicated to spreading love? February the 16th would be a day of dancing for most schools in and around Paris.

The Valentine’s Day dance in particular! With treats and time to spend with your friends or somebody that you associate with glue because you guys always stick together, it’s the perfect setting for the feeling of Valentine’s.

Beyond the cute gifts and sweet notes, Valentine's Day made me think about what it's really about.

Yeah, it's a day for couples, but it's also a chance to show love to friends and family. I saw friends swapping small gifts and writing each other notes in the halls, and it hit me: love isn't just about romance. It's about appreciating everyone who matters to you,
