Tipton-Rosemark Academy, a non-profit, non-denominational independent school, provides a college preparatory education for students pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades. TRA is accredited by both the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (Cognia) and has been approved by the Tennessee Department of Education. Its purpose is to develop the talents of its students to their greatest potential, as expressed by the school mission statement, “Quality Education in a Christian Environment.”

TRA is pleased to offer a rich and varied curriculum that meets the intellectual and developmental needs of students at this important stage of life. In addition to the core subjects of English, Foreign Language, History, Math, and Science, each student at TRA has the opportunity to take classes in Bible, visual/performing arts, and wellness as part of their upper school experience.

Also, TRA offers both honors and dual enrollment courses in the upper school, and each 12th grade student completes a Senior Project which is an independent, group project in which students research a local need, develop a plan, execute an activity, present the results, and reflect on the experience.

English I College Prep This course introduces students to major types of literature including literary elements, short stories, Greek mythology, and Shakespeare with a focus on heroism. The literature chosen for this course will explore both classic and tragic heroes as well as encourage the act of heroism and acknowledge examples of heroes in students’ personal lives. Throughout this course, students will master reading comprehension and analytical literacy and develop proficient writing skills for both academic and creative writing. Students will participate in several projects and writing activities with varied teaching and learning strategies to accommodate learning differences among students.

English I Honors English I Honors will introduce students to the honors literature program by exposing them to basic literary elements found in various works of literature. Students will be introduced to major types of literature including short stories, Greek mythology, and Shakespeare with a focus on heroism. The literature chosen for this course will explain both classic and tragic heroes as well as encourage the act of heroism and acknowledge examples of heroes in students’ personal lives.

Throughout this course, students will master reading comprehension and analytical literacy and develop proficient writing skills for both academic and creative writing. Students will participate in several projects and writing activities with varied teaching and learning strategies to accommodate learning differences among students. Since this is an honors course, students will be expected to participate in independent reading and research outside of given class time. This course is required for students wanting to receive the Honors Distinction upon graduation.

English IV College Prep

Dual Enrollment English Composition II

English IV (College Prep.) traces the development of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon era to modern literature. Students in this course explore the epic poem, Shakespearean tragedy, poetry movements, and the British novel. Through reading, writing, and class discussion, students develop skills of textual analysis and critical thinking. Instruction in vocabulary development, grammar, reading comprehension, composition, and research techniques prepares students to master analytical literacy and academic and creative writing skills. A research paper is required.

In this course, students also complete a senior memory book that chronicles many aspects of their life up to this point. This project provides an opportunity for self-reflection and introspection as they close this chapter of their educational career to move on to the next.

In this course, students will focus on written English and practice in composition. This course requires a variety of readings and research writing with documentation. English 112 is predominantly a skills course. Students must complete ENGL 111 and 112 in sequence. For successful completion of ENGL 112, students must earn a grade of C or higher. Students in this course explore different types of argument writing which are developing a strong argument and counterargument. This course fulfills all of the learning outcomes of UTMartin’s General Education curriculum’s Communication requirement. The purpose of the Communications requirement is to prepare students to effectively communicate information, thoughts, and viewpoints through oral, written, and graphic forms of expression.

Dual Enrollment English Composition I This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of written discourse and includes the study of rhetoric, grammar, and style as a means to effective prose. Readings and concomitant writing assignments are components of this course, and it is predominantly a skills course. Students must complete ENGL 111 and 112 in sequence. For successful completion of ENGL 112, students must earn a grade of C or higher. Students in this course explore the concept of monsters in our world. Not every monster is a fictional creature.

Students will read one epic poem and two novels during this course. Writing requirements include three outside essays, two in-class timed essays, and a journal assignment, which allow students to attempt several different writing environments and styles. This course meets six of the seven learning outcomes of UT-Martin’s General Education curriculum’s Communication requirement. The purpose of the Communications requirement is to prepare students to effectively communicate information, thoughts, and viewpoints through oral, written, and graphic forms of expression.

Algebra 1 Algebra 1 will be introduced with an in-depth review of pre-algebra and build on that foundation to introduce the new concepts in this course. This course covers: simplifying and evaluating expressions, solving equations and systems of equations, graphing linear equations and inequalities, factoring polynomials and operations of polynomials, statistical models, quadratic functions, and much more. Students will be adequately prepared for further study in Geometry and Algebra 2.

Geometry Geometry will cover all the necessary material for a high school-level geometry course. This course covers: points, lines, segments, planes, angles, deductive reasoning, transformations, perpendicular and parallel lines, similarity and congruence of triangles, properties of quadrilaterals and circles, finding surface area and volume of solids, the foundational principles of trigonometry, probability, and more. After completing this course, they will be adequately prepared for the geometry portion of the ACT and further study in Algebra 2.

Algebra 2 Algebra 2 is designed to teach students critical thinking skills, so they can become successful problem solvers. Students will build upon the foundation that was built in Algebra 1 and the applications that were learned in Geometry.

This course covers: solving equations and inequalities with one or two variables, solving quadratic equations, polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational expressions and equations, radicals, complex numbers, conic sections, basic trigonometry, and more. Students will be adequately prepared for further study in Advanced Math.

Precalculus Precalculus builds on concepts introduced in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. Students will review concepts such as linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic equations. They will also work on series, sequences, matrices, polynomial graphs, solving systems of equations, polar coordinates, and complex numbers. They will spend several chapters on trigonometry including solving equations, graphing, and simplifying using trigonometric identities.

Advanced Mathematics Advanced Mathematics provides a comprehensive and multi-layered exploration of algebraic and trigonometric principles. After completion of this course, students will have studied the following concepts: solving equations and inequalities with one or two variables, equations of lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, solving quadratic equations, graphing polynomial functions, polynomial operations, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational expressions and equations, conic sections, basic trigonometry, sequences and series, and more.

Statistics (Dual Enrollment)* Statistics will introduce the concepts of descriptive measures, elementary probability, sampling, random variables, discrete probability distributions, normal probability distributions, and introduction to inference theory. Students will analyze, compute, and graph data; compute the probability; distinguish between discrete and continuous random variables; compute the mean and standard deviation; estimate population parameters; apply the basic concepts of statistical inference to the decision making process; delve into hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and least-squares regression line; and use the statistical software package Minitab. *minimum ACT score required College Algebra (Dual Enrollment)* College Algebra builds on the skills learned in Algebra 1 and 2 at the college level. This course covers functions (e.g., polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic), zeros of polynomials, solutions of systems of equations and inequalities, as well as selected topics from algebra such as matrices and determinants, partial fractions, and the binomial theorem. Students will cover domain and range, operations on functions, inverses, symmetry, exponentials, logarithms, graphs of polynomials, rational functions, systems of equations (linear and non-linear), linear programming, and matrices. *minimum ACT score required Calculus (Dual Enrollment)* Calculus covers functions, limits, derivatives, and integrals. Application of derivatives includes rate of change, curve sketching, local extrema, points of inflection, velocity, acceleration, related rates, and optimization. Biology​​I Biology I (College Prep) is a laboratory science course that investigates the relationship between structure and function from molecules to organisms and systems, the interdependence and interactions of biotic and abiotic components of the environment, and mechanisms that maintain continuity and lead to changes in populations over time. The students will gain understanding as they investigate topics related to real-world applications of biology, biochemistry, cell structure and function, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, mitosis and meiosis, heredity and genetics, DNA and gene expression, gene technology, ecology, and biodiversity. The CK-12 curriculum is used as the basis for study but is supplemented with slide presentations and various web-based interactive activities.

Chemistry I Chemistry I (College Prep) is designed to aid the student’s ability to understand the composition of matter on an atomic level.

The electronic structure of an atom is emphasized as the basis for compound formation, chemical reactions, light, and energy transformations. Molecular model kits and hands-on laboratory experiments are designed to visualize general principles that are explained by the atomic properties.

Honors Physics I *(Pre-requisites: Honors Algebra II) Honors Physics I emphasizes a Newtonian study of the interactions of macroscopic objects that students will observe throughout their daily lives. This course has a heavy mathematical component that is mostly algebra-based, but it does require some basic understanding of geometry and trigonometry. This mathematical emphasis is designed to provide both evidence for physical principles discussed in class, as well as the development of problem-solving skills.

Students will learn about kinematics from mathematical, theoretical, graphical, and practical relationships. They will also study forces, projectile motion, momentum, collisions, and rotational motion. Laboratory experiments will be designed to tie the principles they are learning to applicable real-life situations.

Honors Chemistry I Honors Chemistry I is designed to aid the student’s ability to understand the composition of matter on an atomic level. The electronic structure of an atom is emphasized as the basis for explaining the layout of the periodic table, compound formation, chemical reactions, light, and energy transformations. Molecular model kits and hands-on laboratory experiments are designed to visualize general principles that are explained by the atomic properties. Honors Chemistry I takes the same chemical principles taught in CP Chemistry I to a greater depth with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of the interactions of various states of matter.

This class requires greater problem-solving skills and is more explanation-focused.

Biology II Biology II is a college-prep laboratory science course in which students engage in an in-depth study of the principles of biology. This course emphasizes internal and external anatomical structures and their functions, the environmental interaction of organisms, processes of living things, mechanisms that maintain homeostasis, biodiversity, and changes in life forms over time. Students will investigate and gain an understanding of topics such as: classification of organisms, viruses, and bacteria, protists, fungi, botany, human body structure, circulatory and respiratory systems, immune system, nervous and endocrine systems, and reproduction and development. Students will be involved in hands-on laboratory activities, individual and cooperative learning, as well as group and individual presentations.

Honors Chemistry II *(Pre-requisites: Honors Chemistry I) Honors Chemistry II is designed to build on the student’s knowledge attained in Chemistry I during their sophomore year of high school and emphasizes free-response questions aimed at developing the ability to explain the atomic processes they observe in hands-on laboratory activities in addition to natural events in their daily lives. Topics covered in Honors Chemistry I are reviewed with a greater emphasis on the why.

Students in Honors Chemistry II will further explore the nature of acid/base reactions, oxidation/reduction reactions, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, and chemical equilibria.

Students will also enjoy an introduction to organic chemistry designed to destigmatize the subject as they enter college and give them the confidence to be successful in the subject at the collegiate level. The hands-on laboratory experiments will be designed to further explain chemical principles discussed in class as well as encourage students’ confidence in a laboratory setting.

Computer Science Computer Science Principles is a year-long college-prep course that introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. This course focuses on concepts such as how the internet works and the societal impacts of computer science. This is beneficial for beginners as well as students with computer experience in other courses. The student will be exposed to the following topics: digital information, the Internet, app designs, variables, conditionals, functions, lists, loops, transversals, algorithms, parameters, data, cybersecurity, and global impacts.

Anatomy and Physiology *(Prerequisites: Biology I and Chemistry I) Anatomy and Physiology is a year-long course that will include an intense program of human anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) studies. The areas covered will include medical terminology, cell and tissue structure, and the 11 systems of the human body (integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive). Students will gain understanding as they explore anatomy and physiology through inquiry, hands-on laboratory investigations, dissections, individual studies, and group activities.

World Geography In this course, students examine global perspectives, basic concepts, and fundamental questions of geography. Students explore where phenomena occur and look into the causes behind these phenomena in various locations across the globe. Students will study many paths that focus on how all places on the planet are connected and how humans have used the surface of the Earth over time. Students will explore and learn the value of various topics, will learn to use geographic skills and tools, and will examine the Earth’s physical processes, natural resources, cultural and political geography, population and migration, as well as economic development and interdependence, and urbanization. Students are expected to develop map skills, know-how cultural regions of the world developed, and how human populations are distributed worldwide.

World History and Geography World History and Geography is a two-semester survey course. Students explore the years 1750 to the present, including the geography of the world and how boundaries change throughout time due to world events. In the first semester, students study the rise of the countries in Europe, the Industrial Revolution, political reform in Western Europe, imperialism worldwide, and the economic and political roots of the modern world. Students learn the causes and consequences of World War I, including the importance of nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. The second semester concentrates on the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, decolonization worldwide, and the contemporary world. This course continues the survey course taught in 6th and 7th grade and helps students think like historians.

United States History and Geography In United States History and Geography, students will examine the causes and consequences of the Industrial Revolution and the United States’ growing role in world diplomatic relations, including the SpanishAmerican War and World War I. Students will study the goals and accomplishments of the Progressive movement and the New Deal.

Students will also learn about the various factors that led to our nation’s entry into World War II, as well as the consequences for American life. Students will explore the causes and course of the Cold War and will study the important social, cultural, economic, and political changes that have shaped the modern-day U.S. resulting from the Civil Rights Movement, Cold War, and recent events and trends. Additionally, students will learn about the causes and consequences of contemporary issues impacting the world today and will continue to use skills for historical and geographical analysis as they examine U.S. history after Reconstruction, with special attention to Tennessee connections in history, geography, politics, and people. Too, students will continue to learn fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography within the context of U.S. history. The reading of primary source documents is a key feature of this U.S. history course. Specific primary sources have been embedded within the standards for depth and clarity. Finally, students will focus on current human and physical geographic issues important in the contemporary U.S. and global society. This is a continuation of 8th grade US History and Geography.

Dual Enrollment US History and Geography I* This course begins with the pre-historic American Indian and then covers the early European explorations of the American continent. The development and historical progress of the United States is covered up to the era of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: analyze historical facts and interpretations and demonstrate an understanding of the development of the United States from the Colonial era to Reconstruction; analyze and compare political, social, and economic developments across a range of historical periods to explain the complex heritage of the United States; recognize the diversity of human experience throughout history and synthesize historical facts and interpretations into a meaningful understanding of the past; draw on an informed historical perspective to evaluate contemporary issues and problems and apply the methods of historical research and interpretation, and analyze the contributions of past cultures and societies to the contemporary world.

Students receive 3 hours of college credit at the completion of this course. *minimum ACT score required

Dual Enrollment US History and Geography II* This course examines the history of the United States from Reconstruction through Modern Day. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to analyze historical facts and interpretations and demonstrate a factual understanding of the development of the United States from its earliest times; analyze and compare political, social, and economic developments across a range of historical periods to explain the complex heritage of the United States; recognize the diversity of human experience throughout history and synthesize historical facts and interpretations into a meaningful understanding of the past; draw on an informed historical perspective to evaluate contemporary issues and problems; apply the methods of historical research and interpretation, and analyze the contributions of past cultures and societies to the contemporary world.

Students receive 3 hours of college credit at the completion of this course. *minimum ACT score required and completion of DE US History I is a prerequisite

United States Government and Civics US government and Civics is a semester course.

Students study the purposes, principles, and practices of the American government as established by the US Constitution. Students learn the structure and processes of the government of the United States, the state of Tennessee, and local governments. Students recognize their rights and responsibilities as citizens as well as how to exercise these rights and responsibilities at the local, state, and national levels.

Economics Economics requires students to examine the allocation of scarce resources and consider the economic reasoning used by consumers, producers, savers, investors, workers, and voters. Students will explore the concepts of scarcity, supply and demand, market structures, national economic performance, money and the role of financial institutions, economic stabilization, and trade. Finally, students will examine key economic philosophies and economists who have and continue to influence economic decision-making.

Spanish I (Español 1 - ¡Hola Latinoamérica!)

This course is an introductory level course designed to encourage proficiency in the Spanish language and heighten globalization. It is a full-year course and will build on basic skills used in the everyday Spanish language, aspects of Hispanic culture, and basic grammar. We will use the main communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) throughout the course of this class in order to build the skills necessary to be able to communicate effectively in the target language. By the end of the second semester, students should be able to understand and use basic skills associated with the target language. (i.e. phonics, numbers, alphabet, colors and shapes, basic conversation skills, express likes/dislikes, learn basic vocabulary, tell time) Students will also know how to use simple tenses (present, present progressive, gustar-like verbs).

Students will be able to describe objects and concepts and identify common cognates and false cognates. Students will also be aware of cultural aspects of Central and South America as well as be able to identify these countries and their capitals on a map.

Spanish II (Español 2 - ¡Hola España!)

This course is an intermediate-level course designed to build on previous knowledge acquired and improve proficiency in the Spanish language as well as heighten globalization. It is a full-year course that will introduce higher-level concepts used in the everyday Spanish language, including aspects of Hispanic culture, review of basic grammar, and introduction of more complex grammar. We will use the main communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) throughout the course of this class in order to build the skills necessary to be able to communicate effectively in the target language. By the end of the second semester, students should be able to understand and use basic skills as well as more advanced skills associated with the target language. Students will also know how to use simple tenses in the indicative and imperative moods as well as complex tenses in the indicative mood. In addition, students will be able to identify and use common idiomatic phrases in the target language. The cultural focus of this course is Spanish history and culture, including a study of each of the autonomous regions of Spain.

Wellness This is a semester course that is both sport and fitness-based. First, this class will have a strength and conditioning component.

Students will learn why both strength and conditioning training are vital to a person’s overall health and well-being, and there will also be instruction in the proper use of weight and cardio equipment. The fundamentals of various sports will also be taught in a developmentally appropriate and safe manner. Students will learn the basic skills needed in soccer, pickleball, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, floor hockey, speedball, flag football, and ultimate frisbee.

Building on what these students learned in middle school, this course will continue to focus on the foundation of movement patterns but at a more challenging level than that of their middle school years.

Health This is a semester course that is designed to nurture, guide, and mentor students in the area of mental, physical, and social health. Skills required to maneuver the many stages of young adulthood and beyond will be presented and explored.

Classroom projects, interview etiquette, and CPR training will help facilitate the learning of these important skills. As the conclusion of this course, students should be prepared to conquer the challenges of the world while also being rooted and grounded in their faith. Topics covered in this course include positive self-concept; personal responsibility, positive decision-making for maintaining personal health, family health, and community health; healthy relationships; the effective communication skills needed to resist inappropriate or damaging behavior that may risk ones own health; interview etiquette and employment professionalism; mental health advocacy and the importance of a strong mindset; nutrition; the impact of lifestyle choices; First Aid and emergency procedures; and the importance of fitness and exercise.

Religious Studies 1 “Finding our identity in Christ” The first semester of Religious Studies covers the Old Testament in chronological order. We begin with creation and how the Trinity was and has always existed, followed by the first earthly sin, the Patriarchs, Moses, and Exodus, and we compare the Tabernacle of the Old Testament with the New Testament and how Jesus took the place of the Tabernacle. We end the semester by looking at various kings and prophets of Israel. Throughout the semester we talk about how Jesus is in each of these events and how our identity can be found in Him. Resources for this course include the Bible and resources from Chronological Bible Teaching by Iva May. Religious Studies 2 “Finding our identity in Christ” The second semester of Religious Studies begins with the prophecy of Christ and how these have been fulfilled. We look at the lineage of Jesus and the good news that His lineage brings. We also study Jesus’ life, ministry, death, and resurrection. We end the semester with a detailed study and understanding of Revelations. Throughout the semester we talk about how Jesus is where we should find our identity. Resources for this course include the Bible and resources from Chronological Bible Teaching by Iva May. Uncommon (for Women) In this course, we will look at what a Biblically uncommon woman looks like in a world that tells you to live by its standards. We will read and study about various women in the Bible and how God used each of them in His story.

We will discuss relevant topics that young women face in today’s world using Proverbs 31 and compare the world’s response versus what God’s word says.

Uncommon (for Men) This is a course based on Uncommon by Tony Dungy. Throughout this course, students will read the book, and we will also be looking into Coach Dungy’s life along with many others to see how God can use anyone. Students’ takeaway at the end of this course should be that each one of God’s children (coaches and athletes, parents and kids, teachers and students, etc.) has a God-given plan and purpose for their life. Students, in this course, will learn how to find that purpose and make the best choices to ensure that they are being a light for the World while not being conformed to it.

Defending Your Faith This class is a biblical course that has been designated for the senior class. Throughout this course, students will learn not only how to openly talk about their faith; they will also investigate how to interact and react to the world that they are preparing to enter as they graduate and move on to the next phase of life.

In this class, students will learn how to study their faith; however, this is also a debate-driven class where students will learn to articulate the meaning behind their beliefs.

HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR/ VOCAL PERFORMANCE The TRA Choirs and Vocal Performance Groups are divided into 3 Choirs and 3 Vocal Performance Ensembles: Mixed Concert Choir, Show Choir and Advanced Women’s Choir AND Advanced Women’s Jazz Ensemble, Advanced Guys Quartet and Jesus Talk: Worship Singers Mixed Concert Choir is open to any student interested in performing with a Choir and does not require an audition.

The other two choirs (Show Choir and Advanced Women’s Choir) and the three Vocal Performance Ensembles (Advanced Women’s Jazz Ensemble, Guys Quartet, and Jesus Talk: Worship Singers) will require an audition for placement in the choirs and vocal performance ensembles.

Auditions are held in the spring of the previous year. For all applied auditioned performance courses, evaluations & assessments will be given over music memorization, music theory, music history, and overall performance of the assigned repertoire. Students will be expected to sing alone and with a group on the choir repertoire, as well as, sight-read alone.

Mixed Concert Choir The Concert Choir will perform in at least five scheduled events a year (Veteran’s Day Program, Christmas Concert, Christmas Chapel, Easter Chapel, and Spring Concert), as well as, the Spring Choral Competition Festival. Students will have the opportunity to audition for the All-West Honor Choir. If selected for All-West, students (10-12th) will be eligible to audition for the Tennessee All-State Honor Choir. If selected for All-State, those students are eligible to audition for the All-National Honor Choir. While in Choir Class, students will concentrate on the development of proper singing technique, sightreading, stage presence, and vocal health care.

The Choir Class will study historical and contemporary choral music in English and Foreign language. Foreign Language Choral Music may include (Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, German Swahili, and more).

Choir students are expected to perform quality SATB literature, both accompanied and A Capella.

Advanced Women’s Choir The Advanced Women’s Choir is a performancebased ensemble, where the students sing and perform Classical, Folk, and Contemporary Worship repertoire.

This Choir will perform in the same five scheduled events as well as in both on and offcampus assembly programs, special events, Community Church Worship, Spring Choral Competition Festival, and on an “as needed” basis. Students are expected to perform quality SSAA literature, both accompanied and A Capella. Students will study historical and contemporary choral music in English and other languages. Every year this Choir travels out of state to compete in a National Choral Festival and every four years this choir travels to New York for a National Choir Competition or to sing at Carnegie Hall.

Show Choir: Contemporary Ensemble Placement is by audition. The Show Choir Contemporary Ensemble is a performancebased ensemble class that sings and performs choreographed musical numbers. This course is intended for advanced singers and performers.

Students will be challenged with various styles of commercial music (jazz, blues, pop, rock, country, etc.) from the 20th century. Throughout this course, students are expected to perform, analyze, and critique music performances through aspects of music theory and music history.

Advanced Women’s Contemporary Ensemble Placement is by audition. The Advanced Women’s Jazz Ensemble is a performance-based ensemble that meets twice a week. This group sings and performs choreography to challenging SSAA Jazz, Blues, and Pop repertoire. This course is intended for advanced singers and performers. Students will be challenged with various styles of commercial music: ranging from (jazz, blues, pop, rock, country, etc.) from the 20th century. Throughout this course, students are expected to perform, analyze and critique music performances through aspects of music theory and music history.

Instrumental Music Jesus Talk - Worship Band Placement is by audition. The Worship Band is a performance-based ensemble that will meet once a week. This course is intended for students who are interested in using their instrumental talent for both weekly school Chapel worship and for ministry opportunities within local churches and at community events. Students will be expected to perform various styles of classical & contemporary worship literature at school concerts and for on-campus events. Through this course, students will have the opportunity to perform, analyze and critique music performances through aspects of music theory and music history.

In the Fall, members of this Instrumental Worship ensemble will have the opportunity to participate in the pep band for the home football games (if you are a fall athlete, we will work with your schedule!).

Introduction to Recording Technology This is a semester course. Students will use iPads, Mac Computers, microphones, and readily available apps to create, record, and edit music in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The emphasis of this class is on the creative aspects of recording music, songwriting, and producing. Students will explore and experiment with sound as they learn the roles of both singer/musician and engineer/producer.

General Music Courses and Drama Courses Music History This is a semester course and is a study of music’s original foundations and the research and analysis of music through the decades.

Students will listen to and learn about the lineage of popular music in America by studying genres, styles, bands/artists, albums, and songs as well as their chronology and subsequent influence on other musical acts over the centuries. From music’s foundation in the religious culture in biblical times to American popular music (blues, swing, jazz, rock, and more), students will continue the research and analysis of music through the decades. The emphasis will be on listening and identifying musical elements, history, and context surrounding each major artist and their musical style.

Music Appreciation This is a semester course and is a study of music’s powerful influence on our society today.

Students will research, analyze, report, and debate 5 primary areas of interest involving Music.

Music Theory* Students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of music theory from basic elements (pitch, rhythm, scales, harmony) to chart writing and transcribing music by ear. Major concepts in the western music tradition along with contemporary applications (ex: Nashville number system) will be covered. Students will listen to, analyze, and write music. *Requires teacher recommendation Introduction to Acting (Actor’s Workshop) This course can be taken for the entire year or for a semester and is designed to acquaint students with the world of theatre. This drama course will cover basic theatre terminology, history, important works, and preparation for an audition. The class will also focus on the development of basic acting skills through improvisational games, solo monologues, and group scene studies.

Introduction to Theater Arts This course can be taken for the entire year or for a semester and is designed to acquaint students with the world of theatre. This drama course will cover basic theatre terminology, history, and important works. The class will also explore production in all major technical areas, including set, lights, props, costumes, make-up, and stage management. Students will have hands-on experience in class and will also have the opportunity to do technical work on one of the TRA productions for that semester. After exploring each technical area, students will choose two areas of concentration to focus on for that semester’s production.

Visual Art Art I, II, & III Art I, II, & III are all semester courses. In these art classes, students will explore a variety of 2D and 3D art media and processes. Projects will include drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpting.

Fundamental skills (e.g. linear perspective, color theory, design principles, etc.) in addition to intentional sketching assignments will develop a foundation from which higher-level classes can build upon.

Drawing (I & II) Drawing I & II are both semester courses. In these courses, students will develop their sketching techniques as well as explore a variety of drawing media (graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, marker, ink, pastels, and more). Also, students will be led to develop observational and composition skills necessary for the creation of more original works.

Painting This is a semester course that is open to grades 10 - 12 and has Art I as a prerequisite.

This intermediate-level course will explore a variety of paint media including watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media. Students will study composition, color, and the rendering of 3D forms. Content for paintings will vary from still-life to works created from their own mind. The creation of original student compositions will be emphasized through creative problem solving, journaling, and critique.

Graphic Art I & II This is a semester course that is open to grades 10 - 12 and has Art I as a pre-requisite.

This intermediate-level course will dive into the world of print and video advertising, social media, product package design, and business/promotional products. Students will work both individually as well as in groups to create and produce work. Students will also present, evaluate, and critique their work and the work of others.

Digital Photography I & II This is a semester course that is open to grades 10 - 12 and has Art I as a pre-requisite.

This course covers basic concepts and practice of digital photography, including understanding and use of the camera, lenses, and other basic photographic equipment. The course will address aesthetic principles as they relate to composition, space, exposure, light, and color.

Political Science This is a semester course and is an introduction to the world of Political Science. It is designed to give an overview of the American political system as well as political systems around the world. It will be full of interesting, real-world topics as well as information to help students be active citizens in the future. The goal of this course is to give students an overview of what is going on in the world around them and to help them understand the basics of politics and how they are directly affected. It will also shine a light on our role as Christians in the political world and how we can have a huge impact on the future.

Contemporary Issues This is a course in which students will use inquiry skills to examine the issues that impact the contemporary world. Included in the course will be an analysis of the historical, cultural, economic, and geographic factors that have raised certain issues to levels of concern in our nation and around the globe. Students will engage in research and problemsolving in order to better understand and assess significant current issues. As with all classes at TRA, students will be encouraged to embrace the idea of a Christian worldview while studying and researching current events. As Christians, we are called to be change agents attempting to better this fallen world in which we live.

History Through Film In this class, students will study United States American history through the medium of film. The course examines the place of movies in shaping and changing popular culture in contemporary societies. We will screen, analyze, discuss, and write about films, as well as read primary source documents in American History. Topics will include the political, social, economic, and racial history of the United States. Grouped thematically, students will examine the topics of slavery, the Great Depression, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, and conflicts in the Middle East.

Besides examining these historical events, students will examine the legacy of racism, poverty, corruption, patriotism, civics, and ideology in contemporary American culture.

In addition to each film’s historical and cultural importance, the course will also concentrate on film appreciation and the study of cinematography.

Conditioning In this course, students have the opportunity to receive sport-specific conditioning and training. This class is perfect for the athlete seeking to improve in and be conditioned for a specific sport.

Sport-specific conditioning can enhance your performance, help you improve your skills, and strengthen your body so that you can perform at your highest level. Exercises done in sport-specific training help to condition the body and mind so that they can excel in specific sports. Thus, these exercises duplicate the exact movements of certain actions within a sport.

Creative Writing In this course, students continue to learn, read, and comprehend literature including stories, dramas, and poems independently and proficiently. Students should also be able to read and comprehend literary nonfiction independently and proficiently.

Students will learn how to creatively write over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks and purposes. Over the semester, students will write short stories, various types of poetry, letters, spoken word, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales and will create characters for a lengthy story that will also be written in class. These items will be bound in a portfolio at the end of the semester for a final grade. As part of the creative writing process, students will initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Through speaking, reading, and writing students will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing, peer-reviewing, or speaking.

ACT Prep This course will assist students in raising their ACT score. Students will both practice with real test questions and learn various test taking techniques.

MacPack In this course, students have the opportunity to assist the Information Technology Coordinator with various tasks.

Students will do everything from repairing laptops to demonstrating various programs/apps for fellow TRA students.

Personal Finance This is a course designed to inform students how individual choices directly influence occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real-world topics covered will include income, money management, spending, and credit, as well as saving and investing.

Senior Project* This is a semester course. Senior Project is a graduation requirement completed by all seniors. Students will set up and manage both summer service hours (20 hours) and a semesterlong group project (30 hours by each group member) that will include researching potential projects, interviewing and choosing a mentor, writing a proposal, meeting deadlines, as well as coordinating schedules and responsibilities with group members.

Once the service work is completed, the group will present their project (the process, challenges, and final result) before a panel of faculty, administrators, and community leaders. Students will also organize a group portfolio of all the documentation required throughout the process and submit an individual reflection paper. *pre-requisite: 20 summer service hours completed and validated
