Wellness
This is a semester course that is both sport and fitness-based. First, this class will have a strength and conditioning component. Students will learn why both strength and conditioning training are vital to a person’s overall health and well-being, and there will also be instruction in the proper use of weight and cardio equipment. The fundamentals of various sports will also be taught in a developmentally appropriate and safe manner. Students will learn the basic skills needed in soccer, pickleball, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, floor hockey, speedball, flag football, and ultimate frisbee. Building on what these students learned in middle school, this course will continue to focus on the foundation of movement patterns but at a more challenging level than that of their middle school years.
Health
This is a semester course that is designed to nurture, guide, and mentor students in the area of mental, physical, and social health. Skills required to maneuver the many stages of young adulthood and beyond will be presented and explored. Classroom projects, interview etiquette, and CPR training will help facilitate the learning of these important skills. As the conclusion of this course, students should be prepared to conquer the challenges of the world while also being rooted and grounded in their faith. Topics covered in this course include positive self-concept; personal responsibility, positive decision-making for maintaining personal health, family health, and community health; healthy relationships; the effective communication skills needed to resist inappropriate or damaging behavior that may risk ones own health; interview etiquette and employment professionalism; mental health advocacy and the importance of a strong mindset; nutrition; the impact of lifestyle choices; First Aid and emergency procedures; and the importance of fitness and exercise.
