Understanding Bullying This month in Melbourne under lockdown, I’ve seen more cyberbullying going on than pretty much any other time in my life. The lockdown has been challenging for many and the News/Fake News has been so mashed together, that it’s hard to make head or tail of what is reported. One thing for sure is that it’s creating fear in the community. Fear is a big component of bullying.

Cyberbullying, just one form of bullying, is on the rise and I’m struggling to understand why people think it’s OK to post such hurtful comments, yet they are out there in spades and it’s adults that are doing it!

As a person that’s been on the receiving end of bullying from a kid through to adulthood, I am glad we didn’t have social media when I was young, especially after hearing some of the stories in this month’s issue. Too many young people have committed suicide because of physical and cyberbullying.

One of the kids, Amy (Dolly) Everett’s tragic passing, was in the headlines across

Australia. It is still creating an uproar and has led to laws being implemented. Refer to Jason D Varga’s story on cyberbullying on PAGE 16.

A person experiencing the bullying can be impacted so severely that it affects family and friends equally. Many end up on drugs, both prescribed and illegal, causing a vicious circle of horrendous problems. The impact of bullying when a young person, or any person for

that matter, commits suicide it is also extremely harrowing.

There is also bullying in the workplace from both co-workers and bosses, which creates significant stress on people that then bleeds into the home front. Having worked under a couple of bosses that were control freaks and bullies. I fully understand the despair due to the financial burdens, especially when you have a family to support, that keep a person locked in a job. I have to say, the liberation I felt when leaving said positions was absolutely ecstatic. I thank them now for what I learnt back then.

We can add bullying to the public forum, by the government and local council. Even the media is equally guilty with the public left feeling abused and lost. It sounds depressing and, for many of us, it is.

We’ve tried to cover a range of different ages and scenarios in this issue regarding bullying and the messages are similar.

The feelings of depression, anxiety, worthlessness and self-harm, all carefully coerced or bullied into a person’s psyche, can destroy their confidence and self-worth.

One tremendous positive, coming from my discussions and interviews with Hannah, Mikey, Russell and the columnists, is the acknowledgment of light at the end of the tunnel. In every case of bullying, we’ve chatted about coming out the other side with confidence and feelings of empowerment. This was true in each case.

My interest is in what makes a bully.

Based on my experience over the years I feel bullying starts, for many, in the womb. An aggressive father, or in some cases a mother, sets a tone that the child picks up on.

Once a child is born, the impact the parents and people around them make, even the ads on TV or radio, teaches our kids to be bullies. This can create fear and confidence issues, which they overcome by being a bully, as they fight to survive their predicament. And that’s just to the so-called normal kids. Take a look at the bullying carried out because someone looks or sounds different to the social ‘NORM!’ Look at the games people play online or, that nearly every movie out that features kids, will always feature a bully. There’s no doubt that some kids see the power in being a bully and then there’s the gang angle, with the pressure on kids to bully others to fit in to the clique.

I don’t have all the answers, but our empowered survivors of bullying talk about coming out the other side, more aware and enlightened and, in all cases, a supportive family and friends were the key to surviving the situation. Maybe it’s just that simple – having the conversation, calling it out and being heard!

We have created a Mental Health Services Directory (PAGE 28) for anyone that needs to make that call – whether you are the person being bullied or a caring friend that needs advice on how to help.

SUPERNAL EVENTS Freedom Day Australia

How to write your Life Story

A corridor of trees aligns Fraser Ave, honouring those who lost their lives serving their country and securing the relative peace and freedom we now enjoy. Today, a steady stream of people walked along the Avenue with quick step towards Perth Parliament House for the Millions Rise Freedom Day Event. The vibe of people on the way to the event was upbeat, friendly and peaceful.

Some tempers flared during an on street interview, as a passer-by interjected inciting the people being interviewed. This was the only aggression we witnessed throughout the event.

Around 500 people gathered on the steps and courtyard with an open mic platform was available for anyone who had a view to express. There was a variety of speakers, mostly male, who had a wide range of concerns to share and the demographics of the attendees were broad. From the children being entertained by performance artists to the elderly - all cultures and creeds were present. For the full feature, see our September issue.

The Mentalist ‘‘A Quiet mind is able to hear intuition over fear.’’

What a great time to work on self-care! We quite possibly need to take more care of ourselves and also have the free time to do so. People are under stressors that they may never have experienced before; fearing for loved ones, health, finances and many other reasons.

I realise that when this article comes out, we will be a month further down the track and I sincerely hope that things are better by then. Though, I still feel that holistic self-care will be needed for many months ahead, once we begin to deal with the fallout from this pandemic. In fact, self-care should be practised ALL the time.

A Quiet Mind Pt. 1 Holistic Self-Care

I felt I needed to write this two-part piece at this time; it seems cathartic to do so, as I reflect on my own self-care disciplines and how they developed over time. Yes, you will have to wait for the next issue for part two, but it will be worth it, I promise.

“People are under stressors that they may never have experienced before.”

So, if you will indulge me, I shall pass onto you some history and some useful practices that will help you lower your stress levels, improve your intuition, cultivate Chi energy and improve your physical health. For, as we know, stress, worry and unresolved emotional blocks are poison to the physical body, causing skeletal, muscular and gut problems, even cancer. Yes, we can think ourselves sick subconsciously, so this is why looking after ourself is so important. If our bodies are temples - some may be crumbling ruins, but renovation is possible - then our mind is every molecule of every brick and the ground it sits on.

In Budo, the martial way, there are four states of mind; Shoshin, the Beginners Mind, Mushin, the Empty Mind, Fudoshin, the Immovable Mind and Zanshin, the Remaining Mind. What we are interested in here though for a few reasons is Fudoshin.

Fudoshin models the mind of Fudo Myo-o, the war god in Japanese Buddhism. The Fudoshin situation represents the highest level of focus where the mind is not affected by any external factors. It cannot be stopped on the way to its destination. The person is completely confident and has no fear in his soul. It is like being in an impenetrable fortress or standing in the eye of a hurricane.

How do we obtain this state of mind? Make no mistake, it will take practice, discipline and time though, on the plus side, it is not all that difficult or taxing to achieve. Those who follow me, may have gleaned that I am an ardent student of martial arts, although the martial arts are not about training my body for conflict, it is about training and stilling my mind.

mental health This fascinated me more than the actual physical side of training. I still use elements of those teachings now in my shows, when not in lockdown.

As a mentalist and hypnotist, I use subtle energy and demonstrate energy transference routines, all from a seed that was planted 36 years ago. To all my teachers - a deep and respectful thanks.

So where is this going? When do I learn to still my mind, you ask?

Like all good things, patience is the key. Next month I will pass onto you the secret!

A few issues ago, I wrote about a moving meditation using Qigong, just one of the styles I have studied over many years.

However, at the moment, I study a traditional style of Shukokai Karate. I have been fortunate to have sailed through seven belt levels in just over fifteen months, mainly because of my prior studies.

The styles that resonated strongly with me were those that improved my mind.

Going way back to the 1980s when I was twelve, I began to study under Soke Tony Ball, in a style called, wait for it‌ FUDOSHIN. Fudoshin Ryu taught a mix of Aikido, Judo, Jujutsu, Karate and Weaponry. The theory was that these arts were intended to be studied

alongside each other to create a more holistic and complete martial arts education. But it was Soke’s words, his wisdom and stories that always stuck with me; that a quiet mind is able to hear intuition over fear, that it is about the MIND more than the body.

Something I came to appreciate as I grew older.

When I was around fifteen, I began studying Wing Chun Kung Fu under Grandmaster Sifu William Cheung, the man responsible for introducing Bruce Lee to his master the legendary Ip Man, when they were teenagers in Hong Kong.

Again, what I remember most was not the forms or katas or physical drills, it was his talks about Chi and energy.

There’s an awkward trend playing out on social media especially, where expressing an opinion in a public forum sees one shot down in flames by those of a different opinion. In severe cases, long-lasting friendships are severed by the toxicity. This is where you see good people essentially feel entitled to express themselves, without appropriate thoughtfulness and kindness.

By Derran Heney Mental Health Professional Bullying, harassment and horizontal violence: Can we engage in these behaviours without awareness?

Bullying behaviours are on the increase and, despite what people believe, are not only reserved for the school playground with conflict over lunch money. However, this can undoubtedly be where bullying behaviours are first identified.

In the larger world, it plays out on television, radio, social media platforms, sometimes role modelled by those we often look up to. Examples are everywhere you turn these days. Usually, this is subtly obscured by the notion that not only are we entitled to our opinions, which is true, but that we are entitled to put others down or shame them for their opinion, belief and values, especially when different to our own. There seems to be less healthy debate and more personal attack and defensive stances taken.

People nowadays seem to have less awareness of their words and choices especially on social media platforms, where there appears to be a false surety that writing bullying type messages are less damaging. This is incorrect as written words often have more impact. This is shameful as many others read them and it is written forever.

These posts are also open to being misinterpreted and can allow others to get on board and engage in the same behaviours.

They are often too, the most common aspect of any interaction that people most regret; after all is said and done you cannot take it back.

Be more open-minded and curious about who people are and more importantly, why they may do things differently. Should we really think and act all the same?

Should it really threaten us if others think differently?

Every opportunity that challenges us is also an opportunity to resolve the conflict within and heal.

Do your self-work; why does something that differs from your belief hurt you? Why do we lack acceptance of others? Do we lack acceptance of ourselves?

More questions to ask ourselves: Is it worth it? Remain aware of yourself and your actions. What is the ripple effect of your words and actions? Are they kind, necessary, truthful, understanding? Remember that we are all accountable for our actions and also the broader ripple effect of our actions. We may inadvertently hurt people beyond measure and not even realise it unless we get real about what we put out in the world and work hard to address it.

Look in the mirror. Would you like your behaviour if you were on the receiving end? Mirror work is so important; what do you see of yourself in the mirror, what of your behaviour is reflected back at you? How would you prefer a person to behave when holding a different opinion? Being respectful and thoughtful is often preferred, so we have a choice of how we respond.

Share your feelings with someone you trust. Working through feelings about these issues can help shed light on issues and see through other’s perspectives.

As humans, we have an amazing ability to heal ourselves and others. Let’s always choose kindness, gentleness, compassion and consideration towards others and ensure we are role modelling the kindest behaviour for our next generations to come.

cyberbullying What a wonderful world we live in, in these modern times with information and social interaction at our fingertips.

This though can came at a dark cost.

Something we have all experienced to some degree is cyberbullying. Why is it so rampant? Well, there are those who sadly have become bullies in real life, then there are people who would not act or react in a bullying fashion in person yet, because they can operate from the relative safety of anonymity or distance using the internet, they tend to become more inclined to bully others. In this day and age, everyone has an opinion and everyone equally seems also to be easily offended. Internet arguments are common, leading at times to some form of bullying.

I have been called out on social media for posting something that apparently offended someone, or that they disagreed with to then be met with a barrage of bullying. I am

no angel either and if I see something posted that is fake news, I’ll generally call it out. The spread of fake news helps no one; also if I witness someone engaging in dangerous or unethical practices, I call them out too if I feel it will at least help to stop someone else being damaged by said practice.

However, my topic for this issue is cyberbullying that is relentless, personal, threatening, vindictive and where there is no safe place from the attacks. Yes, we can block a person from our social media,yet that can only do so much and I have witnessed someone being attacked by groups of people, via social media, emails and texts, at all times of the day and night. There was no escape, no relief.

The stress and anxiety this poor person suffered every time their phone went off,

each time they checked their email, was dreadful. It got to the point where they eventually cancelled all their social media profiles, changed phone numbers and email addresses and still received threatening letters at their home.

In November 2018, NSW introduced ‘Dolly’s Law’.

Perpetrators of online bullying could face up to five years’ prison time under this law, which came into effect after a 14yo Northern Territory teen took her own life in January of the same year after persistent bullying and abuse, including cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has no boundaries. The young are twice as likely to commit suicide due to persistent cyberbullying, while businesses can experience loss of income.

Legislation of cyberbullying, personal liability and victim recourse has proven difficult in a county that values free speech. The information below may help make things clearer.

Relevant Law: (NSW and Commonwealth) that prohibits cyberbullying.

Although cyberbullying does not constitute a distinct offence under Australian legislation, in general, the use of mobile phones, email or social networking sites to harass or abuse a certain person or group of people can constitute a criminal offence when characterised as: 1. Using the internet or a device to threaten, harass or offend another person Section 474.17 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Commonwealth) criminalises the use of a phone or the internet to threaten, harass or seriously offend somebody. A message or post could be considered offensive if it is likely to cause serious anger, outrage, humiliation or disgust. The maximum

penalty for such an offence is three years imprisonment.

2. Stalking It is a criminal offence under section 13 of the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act 2007 (NSW) to stalk or intimidate a person with the intention of causing them to fear physical or mental harm. Prohibited conduct for this offence includes the use of phones, text messaging, email or other forms of technology such as social media, to stalk or intimidate someone.

This offence attracts a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment. Similar provisions appear in other states.

3. Intimidating or threatening conduct Section 474.15 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Commonwealth) criminalises the use of phones, text messages, emails or online posts to intentionally threaten to kill someone. Such an offence is punishable by a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment. It is also a criminal offence under

this section to use phones, text messages, emails or online posts to intentionally threaten to cause someone serious harm. Such an offence is punishable by a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.

4. Inciting or counselling a person to commit suicide A person is guilty of an offence under section 31C of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) if they incite or counsel another person to commit suicide and that other person does commit or attempts to commit suicide as a result of that incitement or counsel.

Such an offence carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment. Similar provisions appear in other states. Perpetrators who engage in cyberbullying may also face liability from internet or mobile phone service providers, websites, schools or non-penal courts.

5. Defamation Criminal: Section 529 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) states that it is a criminal offence to publish false information

about a person knowing that the information is false and having the intention to cause that person serious harm.

Such an offence attracts a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment. Similar provisions appear in other states.

of particular comments or photos that were published about them on social media platforms may have a right to sue the perpetrator(s) for defamation. Such an action could extend to all those involved in the publication of the defamatory material.

Civil: While criminal defamation is an available cause of action concerning various forms of cyberbullying, civil defamation is available as an alternate avenue for victims seeking compensation for damage caused to their reputation. A person who has experienced humiliation, ridicule or contempt as a result

Accessing online accounts without authorisation In NSW, it is a crime under section 308H of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) to access or modify restricted data held in a computer with knowledge that such access or modification is unauthorised. A common example is when a person logs into another person’s

online accounts without obtaining their permission to do so. Such an offence attracts a maximum penalty of 2 years imprisonment.

Under Federal legislation, an identical provision appears under section 478.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

Hopefully, this may help some and remember, if you feel overwhelmed or stressed because of cyberbullying to seek help to look after your mental health.

Was there a resolution to the bullying?

“Nope, I just kept moving schools and foster homes.

I left school early in year 11 due to abuse happening in my last foster home (not by the foster parents), and as for the drag queens that bullied me, let’s say I worked my magic on stage and people loved it. Don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re not good enough!”

Russell Harrower has grown up with deformity and disability, in foster care and with bullying a part of daily life. So much so, at times he wished his mum had let him die at birth!

What were you bullied for?

Did that impact your life?

“As a child, I was bulled for a deformity in my left hand, having no neck and for not fitting in with the rest of the children.”

“Yes. I prefer to be by myself, I don’t like going out and would rather stay at home in front of my computer or lying with the dogs. With one arm longer than the other, and my deformed hand, which for a long time I chose to hide, it was embarrassing and difficult and messed me up mentally.”

How did that make you feel?

“Honestly, when you are brought up in a Foster Care System with abuse at home and abuse/bullying at school, it’s very upsetting, but the bullying at home was the worst of the two evils.”

What was your first experience of bullying?

“I can’t recall the first, but I was called ‘4 finger freak’

“However, at some time in our lives, we all have to build a bridge and move on, and it’s taken a while to realise this but ‘life can be crap’ it’s what you take away from it that matters.”

On the bullying issues you raised in question 1, how did they impact your life?

“I have always had health issues; I was born with a hole in my heart, no bone in my left thumb and many more disabilities. I didn’t look like the rest of the kids!

“I think having disabilities affects everyone differently.

I often feel like an outcast.

I feel like I don’t belong and wish that at birth, mum would have told the docs not to fix my heart and let me die. Yeah, that’s how I felt. But I do believe that we’re on this earth for a reason.

“As a gay teenager, I expected major bullying, but the bullies didn’t care about my sexual orientation, not with my physical issues so obvious. It’s funny because the one experience that turned my world upside down, for a moment was

interview when I was singing in high school and forgot the words.

I froze - out of nowhere the bullies started chanting my name! It was surreal hearing the same people that taunted me start supporting me, albeit just briefly.

“After high school, I bumped into one of my old bullies at a Pride event with his partner, we ended up chatting and he apologised for the things he said back then!”

Have these experiences shaped your life?

“I’m more caring of others, I try to be positive where possible and I don’t judge people on their past or disabilities. After all, we all have things we can and can’t do. Being less

fortunate and having the upbringing I did, often make me question why. Why me?

Why did I have to suffer? But I’ve realised it was only me allowing myself to be hurt, and allowing myself to suffer.

You learn quickly when you have a disability, either use it to your advantage or hide it.

I did both, when kids would call me ET; I started doing ET impersonations.

“After having my hand operation, moving my index finger to make a thumb, got called ‘Captain Hook’ because of the inserted metal hook hanging out of this thumb/index finger.

Surprisingly, it helped some of the kids understand what

was happening and that was cool!”

How have these experiences helped you grow as a person?

“I’m still trying to work that one out; because we are always growing, and always learning. The biggest thing I believe now is - don’t judge a book by its cover.”

What suggestions would you offer people being bullied?

“Tell someone! Maybe not the popular answer, but if you don’t talk to someone and let it build up, you just risk creating more issues later in life.

Hangin’ with Hannah

Bullying is not Cool!

Hannah Swinnerton is a passionate advocate for mental health and works hard against bullying due to her own experiences from prep to year 12. In this issue, we interview Hannah about her journey and about her new group: Young People with a Purpose: You Are Not Alone.

What’s your experience with bullying?

It started in primary school where I was bullied severely because of my size; I wasn’t skinny. I had people picking on me, calling me horrific names. The teachers did nothing and it just went on

and on throughout primary school. When I hit secondary college it was worse.

Way worse!

People were cruel, people were nasty, there was no escape from it. I got bullied going to and from school and after school. Because of social media I had people cutting out pictures of my head and sticking it on pigs and cows and then uploading it to social media.

The bullying kept going and I’d just go home crying every night and lock myself in my room, because I couldn’t stand it. Eventually I got to the point where I couldn’t take anymore and I went to mum and said enough is enough! We went to the doctors and I got diagnosed with major depression and anxiety.

The bullying kept going and going and, at the end of year 12, I was ready to give up on life. I went home one day and wrote a speech about how I felt, which I

read out at my school. Things changed a bit after that.

When you were being bullied how’d that make you feel?

It made me feel like I didn’t belong. Like I was just sad, angry, alone, frustrated, annoyed and upset.

So, writing that letter let you free yourself?

Yeah, well, when I was getting bullied, I would tell the teachers, but they did nothing, it just went on and on. Writing my speech really empowered me. After the speech, many of the people that had bullied me came up and apologised and that helped a lot too.

What sort of support system have you had?

My family. They’ve been really good; they’ve encouraged me to get support and been there for me the whole time, through school when the bullying was going on. Yeah, just being in a loving family has helped.

interview Did you have any doctors prescribe you any prescription drugs to help you cope?

When they diagnosed me, they did talk about it and I did go on one which helped me just a little bit. I went off it, because some of the

How do you feel now as an adult, having been through all of it?

I feel pretty good, I’ve done heaps of things. I’ve done pageants up on the Gold Coast and I’ve done a few pageants down here in Hastings and many other exciting things. I’ve been interviewed by Channel 7, by the newspaper and, since I graduated in 2012, I’ve been doing advocacy for mental health and bullying. “…if you’re having a tough time there’s plenty of hotlines and support numbers out there.”

Try and find something you love. For example, I’ve been doing Diamond Picture just to get through this lockdown. But yeah, try and find something to do, something you love to keep you occupied; go for a walk, talk to people, check in with

My experience with bullying - Interview with Mikey

By Derran Heney Hi everyone! My name is Mikey. I am a recent year 12 graduate and have started studying a Bachelor’s Degree this year. I want to share with you some of the personal struggles I endured during my time at high school, especially with bullying.

Growing up, I was always a shy and reserved kid. I liked to keep to myself and kept my friendship group small.

Throughout primary school I always felt like an outcast; I just didn’t fit in with the majority of my peers. Looking back, I didn’t experience any bullying during primary school but this latter time in my life had a huge impact on my self-confidence and ability to stand up for myself.

When I started high school, a lot of things changed for me. Suddenly, the few people I was close with in primary school were in other classes or moved to other schools. I soon became distant with old friends and became closer with a couple of other students in my classes.

Everything was fine for a few months and I felt comfortable going to school until a few of my newer friends started making comments about my appearance and weight.

Around the same time, a popular group of boys started making fun of me because the majority of my friend group consisted of girls. These boys used homophobic slurs and made rude comments about me every time I walked past them.

I remember thinking that something was extremely wrong with me and that I needed to change myself to fit in. This had a detrimental effect on my mental health; I did not have the self-confidence to stand up for myself and instead endured their comments until I hit breaking point.

Eventually, I worked up the courage to ask my parents about changing schools.

I thought that this would put an end to the negative comments I was receiving on a daily basis and I started attending an alternative school, which I felt was the best decision I had ever made.

interview I met so many cool and unique people that I am now lucky enough to call my best friends.

I had almost forgotten about the bullying from my previous school until a few of the boys that made fun of me, started catching the same public bus I travelled on to get to school.

Soon enough, I was receiving the same homophobic comments every morning.

These boys would stare at me, take photos and laugh at me.

It got to the point where I no longer felt comfortable taking the bus in the morning and would purposely miss the first period at school every day to avoid crossing paths with them.

How did their behaviour make you feel?

“At the time, the behaviour of these individuals had an extremely negative effect on my self-image. I started to believe every little comment made about me. I remember feeling like a waste of space, worthless. I would never wish the feeling I felt back then on anyone.”

How did you cope with their bullying?

“At the time, I didn’t know how to cope with their behaviour towards me. I didn’t reach out for help and instead kept it all to myself, until I reached my breaking point. I began having suicidal thoughts and self-harm became a regular habit.

I believe it had a strong negative affect on my confidence and the way I perceive myself. These are personal issues that I am still trying my best to work on today.”

How did you make sense of why they behaved like that?

“I believe that the majority of the individuals who bullied me at school were battling their own demons at the time.

Whether it be family problems or personal insecurities.”

“I remember feeling like a waste of space, worthless.”

What advice might you give others going through the same things?

“Stay strong and don’t let their words bring you down.

You are stronger than you give yourself credit for. Never be ashamed to reach out for help, there are so many people out there that love and support you, no matter what the circumstances. Reach out to others, professionals like school counsellors if you can. You can get through this and I promise everything is better on the other side.”

Dream the Impossible Dream

From the 23rd August to the 19th September, we travel through the Lunar Moon of Challenge. This is being experienced on a global level, uniting the world on a new level of experience. It doesn’t just offer challenge; it brings the opportunity of change.

You could say the word CHALLENGE holds within its grasp the necessary elements that allow us to make the CHANGE, into being a better human individually and a better race of humans globally; the microcosm and macrocosm.

September itself is a month that can bring completion.

It doesn’t necessarily mean ‘it’s over’, but it does bring things to a point of

readiness and, seeing the way forward, exploring new horizons and releasing any feeling of oppression and dormant energy.

The 28th of September, is Kin 183 Blue Magnetic Night.

As we flow from September’s nine frequency, into October’s very singular, alone and upright, ‘You’ll be right, just stand up and do it’ 10/1 vibration, we may find ourselves knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door.

This will be an enhanced quality of dreaming, as the Blue Night allows us to vibrate with an abundance of energy for healing, wellbeing, goodness, wealth, health and happiness, but at a price.

The good news is, the price is right and it paves the way for your upliftment, only coming at the cost of letting go of the old and readying the self (I AM) for the new.

You may well ask, how do I do that? Feel what serves you and leave what does not, to allow that which you desire and stand back from what you do not.

Only then can you be of true service to others, family, friends, and community, as you can understand that everyone has their purpose, their desires and their ways in this world.

Secondly, when feeling abundant in one’s own energy, you can truly stand by, stand with and support others whilst they follow their path, without trying to instil your law, your intention and your way of being upon them.

By the latter end of October, great wisdom may well have dawned, or at least more perspective than previously acknowledged. The Self-Existing energy of the wise old Owl Moon will suddenly swoop down and pick you up, ready to carry you into 2021, a change for the better.

Although others may do their best to deter you, if you falter or the road less travelled may be missed altogether and you may even find yourself stuck at the fork of the road, with no idea which way to go.

Remember, the self-existing tone of form can only be made manifest when one is following their dharma, their unique path of cause and consequence. When thought and intention align, action becomes mobile and flexible.

The Bullying Anomaly Origin of the Word

The term bullying is used freely these days and there is no circumstance in which this type of behaviour is acceptable.

However, the origins of the word Bully reflect a different and diverse story.

I have always loved words and their meanings, including the ‘word elves’ that hide in them, giving us more insight into their true meaning. However, with the word bully, there is no hiding – it’s there - BULL signifying bullish behaviour.

However, in the 1530’s, ‘Bully’ was used as a term of endearment and familiarity, which could be applied to either sex. It possibly originated from the Dutch word Boel meaning lover, which was the corruption of an earlier Dutch word Broeder or the German word Buole, both meaning brother.

This friendly connotation continued as late as 1892, when Oliver Heslop compiled a glossary of Northern UK sayings and listed Bully as equivalent to brother; a mate, a comrade.

So where did it all go so wrong?

There are many theories but none can account for such a rapid and complete semantic change. It could be that the verb ‘to bully’ was derived from the animal, which, as a breeding male, would harass and use its power to override other younger bulls. This tallies with the spirit animal meaning that describes

the bull as a strong role model, but sometimes a little too bull-headed, both literally and figuratively. We have sayings such as ‘like a bull at a gate’ or ‘a bull in a china shop’, both meaning headstrong behaviour without any consideration for the damage or consequences. And isn’t that bullying?

A strange anomaly in the numerology of the word is that Bully has the same

Later, it was applied only to men and implied friendly admiration as illustrated by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), who used it often when describing a good friend or fine fellow. One example of this is in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Peter Quince asking Nick Bottom “What sayest thou, bully, Bottom?”

feature numerological value as Love: 18/9. Maybe this indicates that we could see the bully, not as someone to be feared, but as someone to feel saddened by?

Does this show us that by l oving who we are, we become stronger? One of the most empowering actions we can make, is to forgive the behaviour – not the action, as that is the bully’s responsibility - and set ourselves free.

Years ago, David worked in London, where one of his directors was just such a bully.

He held meetings and would single out one person to ridicule or diminish to the rest of the team. His way of gaining respect, poor deluded man! When I heard about this sad soul, I gave David techniques to apply at these meetings. Full of his usual scepticism based upon many distressing experiences, this shy and gentle man attended his meeting, newly armed. He told me later of the ‘amazing coincidence’ that he was not the target and in fact, it was as though he was not even present. Using similar tools, he always termed the results as ‘ coincidences’ until finally, he had to admit that it worked!

This cyclic process spiralled this particular bully down into deeper and deeper despair, forcing him to use attack as a defence.

His was from a simple and austere background, which was a problem to him and he used undermining tactics to feel stronger by making others feel weaker. He gathered a team around him who were afraid of his power over their jobs; the classic behaviour of a bully – form a gang!

The energy of thought creates action, that action then promotes further thought, creating the next action and so on.

So is that the key I wonder, that both the bully and their target have lost their inner self-worth and with it, their personal power. One hides it behind aggression and the other becomes vulnerable, with the law of attraction drawing them together.

If this is the case, then as adults we can strengthen our foundation by changing our view of who we are, supporting our children to do the same. For those that experience bullying in

the extreme, I send you my heartfelt apologies on behalf of that sector of humanity that have lost themselves so completely that they need to suppress you in such a cruel way.

We do not reap benefit from being intimidated by another’s beliefs or opinions but neither can we change it. However, we can change the opinion we hold about ourselves and, in doing so, regain a level of strength.

We know deep down that we are each intrinsically good, compassionate and wonderfully unique but fear often masks it, affecting our thoughts and our behaviour. So, stand strong in the face of the bull, don’t lose sight of yourself and you will ultimately prevail.

Spirit of things The Aura and the Chakras I have chosen to write about the Aura and the Chakras this month, as these are both full of colour, which has so many different meanings. Also, we could all do with a bit of colour in our lives right now, given the current state of the world as we know it.

Colour is an important part of our life which we take for granted. How many of us open the curtains in the morning not really noticing the colour of the sky or the colours in the garden? Why do we choose specific colours of clothing on any particular given day?

Colour is associated with so much in our life, including our mood.

The Aura is an energy field and has two forms; firstly, the cosmic vibratory energy that is omnipresent in the universe, structuring and sustaining all things and secondly, the specific Aura that sustains each human body.

The Aura emits a field of energy and we don’t have to be psychic to be aware of its vibration. Sensitive people, in particular, can sense when a person feels ill, are emotionally hurt, angry or generally not a nice person. Some people even say “that person has an aura about them” or “they seem to glow.” The Aura is described in many ways.

The Aura dates back for millennia; Christian saints and other religions, traditionally show a halo around the head, which is still depicted to this day.

The Aura is generally recognised as having seven layers. Most ‘psychics’ only see the first three, those that are closest to the physical body.

The Aura can also be likened to a kaleidoscope; an ever-changing range of colours depending on our thoughts, health, wellbeing. There are many colours associated with the Aura, some of which refer to the seven colours of the rainbow, our chakras.

Throat (Blue) - our expression and communication.

The knowledge of the chakras date back to 1500 to 1000 BC and there are seven main ones, which are also energy fields, but there are many more.

Chakra in Sanskrit means ‘wheel’ and these energy wheels aid our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Sacral (Orange) - our creativity and sensuality.

Spiritually aware people believe that the chakras should

Heart (Pink) - to show compassion and love unconditionally.

Solar Plexus (Yellow) - our energy, power and emotions.

Root (Red) - our foundations and connection to the earth.

Although I have briefly touched on the chakras, there is much more that can be delved into.

As colour is so essential in our lives and people have different interpretations of colours, I have

given some examples for your understanding: Red – energetic, passionate, adventurous, anger, pain and inflammation.

Orange – thoughtful, generous, kind-hearted, in tune with people’s emotions and sensitivity.

Yellow – logical, had-working, power, confident.

Green – earthy, nature-loving, compassionate and a healing colour.

Pink – loving, giving, emotional, creative.

Blue – strong personality, excellent communicator, balance.

Purple – psychic, intuitive, philosophical, knowledgeable.

White – spiritual awareness, psychic ability, practical and a people person.

Violet- higher aspect of higher love, committed to spiritualty, guided by higher consciousness.

Gold – love the finer things, attractive, artistic, independent.

Enjoy and experiment and bring colour back into your life!

Over the Rainbow Gender - Our children know best

By Celeste de Vis Ellie’s pronouns are She/Her. Ellie is an 11yo child, one of seven people in her family.

She lives with her mother, father, two brothers, her sister-in-law and their newborn baby, her nephew, Manolo.

Ellie’s radiates energy in abundance. She is a natural entertainer of the arts and has a generous spirit and is a peacemaker.

My favourite memories of Ellie over the years have been her singing and dancing performances to everyone at Rainbow Connections. This young lady was born for the stage and has rhythm, beat, pitch and attitude.

How old were you when you transitioned?

“I was six and a half years old when I transitioned into a girl.”

When did you know that you were really a girl?

“I was five years old when I knew that I was a girl. I loved to go through my mum’s clothes and walk around in my favourite outfits. I would wear a tee-shirt on my head and imagine that it was my beautiful, long hair.”

Ellie’s Mum, Kristy added, “She would use a tee shirt as hair every day.”

“Many schools were ill-equipped to advocate and support transgender kids until given the knowledge base, skill set and education…”

Were there any other transgender kids in your school?

“There were no transgender children at my school, so my parents had to contact Safe Schools Coalition to come and speak with my teachers and the students.”

Safe Schools Coalition was funded by La Trobe University and the Vic Government in supporting students who were part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s now handled by the Department of Education. One aspect of their role was to undertake professional development for school staff and assist the transition of transgender youth to be able to live authentically on the school property.

Some examples of their valuable contribution include: • School staff educated to be able to understand the transgender child and support the child, which includes controlling any bullying.

• The student addressed by their chosen name.

Their schoolbooks, school records and any other labels changed to that name.

• The student can use the toilets of their preferred gender.

• The student can sleep in accommodation of their gender at camps.

• The student can play a sport of their preferred gender.

Many schools were ill-equipped to advocate and support transgender kids until given the knowledge base, skill set and education from Roz, Mel, Joel and Matt. Safe Schools saves lives.

Ellie said, “We got Mel from Safe Schools to talk to my teachers.”

How would you describe living your old self, before transitioning?

“I did not feel comfortable in my body. I did have happy memories from when I was a boy, but I would talk about really feeling that I was a girl.”

Who could you talk to?“ I told my friends that I was a girl.

They accepted me. I told my mum and dad that I was a girl.

From the beginning, my mum was supportive. My dad became supportive after that.

What can you do now that you could not do back then?

“I can go to the girl’s toilets at school, at a shopping centre, anywhere.”

“Two teachers from the school here I transitioned made me feel accepted and important. They were Mrs Purcell and Miss McNeill.

I changed schools about a year later. At my current school, my favourite teachers who make me feel supported and included are Miss Smith and Mr Hurfurt.”

If you could go back to your past self now, what would you want to say to those around you?

“I would like to say to my past self be strong and be patient.”

Have you ever been bullied?

If you can, describe how you felt?

“Yes. I have been bullied for being transgender. It makes me feel very sad. At school,

I can go to my teachers, Mr Hurfurt or Miss Smith, for help. The bully will usually get a warning or be made to walk with the teacher on yard duty. My school teaches Respectful Relationships. It does not tolerate bullying.”

Right now, Ellie you are 11yo. What would you like to say to your six year old self?

“I would say, Ellie, stay positive.”

Do you undertake any sport?

“Yes. Last year I joined a Hip Hop group. I love it!”

Did your parents contact the organisers and chat with them about you being transgender?

“Yes. My mum discussed it with them. They were supportive of me. There are other transgender students in the older dance classes, so the organisers have an understanding and are inclusive.”

If there is one thing, or more, that you would like to share with the readers, what would that be?

“Try and treat people the way you want to be treated. We are all special and all different in our own way!”

Sacred Sites

The Gosford Glyphs There is much, much more than meets the eye, when it comes to Australia’s forgotten history and I experienced this first hand, on a visit in 2014 to the inexplicable site of the Gosford Glyphs on the Central Coast of New South Wales, an hour north of Sydney.

Well hidden in a beautiful, yet unremarkable Australian bush setting, overlooking the scenic Brisbane Waters and not far from the small town of Kariong, you will find a cluster of approximately three hundred Egyptian hieroglyphs carved on two parallel sandstone rock panels and a third, a short distance away. This sight is so out of place; literally the last thing you expect to see as you descend into a narrow space between two imposing walls, that it begs the question; ‘Did the ancient Egyptians journey to Australia?’

My first visit to this extraordinary site was guided by Australian father 40

and son research team, Steve and Evan Strong.

I found myself among several other international researchers, local Elders and fellow truth seekers, as we walked the long track toward the site, clapping our hands to alert the spirits of the land of our presence.

In honour of local tradition, we also ‘smoked’ ourselves in the aromatic fumes of dry eucalyptus leaves and said a small prayer in honour of the ancestral lineage of the place.

My first impression, as we neared the site, was a tangible and sudden hush, as if the atmosphere had densified somehow and I had a feeling of anticipation, as we approached the

overarching presence of a gigantic Angophora Cosata, affectionately known as the ‘Grandmother Tree’.

Finally, one by one, we clambered down into the crevice between the two walls and, upon regaining our composure, looked wide eyed with wonder at the sight before our eyes.

The academic interest excited by these glyphs over the years, has been limited to a decisive debunking of claims that the hieroglyphs are genuine relics of an ancient Egyptian voyage to Australia. Yet many an unconventional Australian, including the Strongs’, Colin Hayter and Rex Gilroy, have spent decades probing into the mystery. Highly esteemed authors and researchers such as Graham Hancock, Michael Tellinger, David Hatcher Childress and Klaus Dona have all come to experience the indelible mystery for themselves.

So, what is the story written on the walls?

That would depend largely upon who you ask, but the basic translation relates

It includes incredible corroborations and discoveries he has personally made in Australia and in the Egyptian Isis Temple and Indus Valley.

Sacred Sites: The Alchemy Ethics - Pt 2

By Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart When I journey, I am called - to a land, people and sites.

Often I am called to places that I have the least mind to go to. This usually makes the journey extra special, because my experience is defying the limitations of my mind and ego’s perspective.

Often, I have an unconscious story running which is not my own. One that I had accepted into my energy field and mind and that is not accurate or honouring.

“I like to consider myself a guest on Earth; that even my body is on loan for a short period of time…”

The Force that calls me beyond my limitations is the part of myself that is vast and timeless and connected to infinity. The Divine seeks to remind me not to box it, myself, others or any thought.

When I was a complete novice, with no idea what to do, somehow all I needed to

know was magnetised in writing or an equally clear manner, before I departed.

In other words, the alchemy of the journey began long before I arrived at the destination and was like a connect-the-dots picture from childhood.

That, I suggest, is the best place to start; listening to the guidance of your heart, yearning for it’s a message from your soul and then connect the dots.

You can simply research the internet, employ a spiritual healer, shaman or medium or meditate and consult your guides, *Who Love You Unconditionally. Each avenue will provide unique perspectives and insights into the place to which you’re guided.

I like to consider that I am at home everywhere on the Earth; that the Earth and its people welcome me wherever I go. I find this helps me have a good experience and, that doors that would otherwise be closed to me, will open.

I like to consider myself a guest on Earth; that even my body is on loan for a short period of time and that this is a gift and a privilege, not a right.

This way, I’m in a state of humility without expectation.

I like to know something about the people, their beliefs and customs. I like to also know about the plants, animals and minerals there, for to my heart-mind, they are equally important as the people.

I understand myself to be a custodian of the Earth and all sentient life upon it. I feel that all people are the carers.

sacred sites I draw on what I’ve learned from my research and following my guidance about what items I take with me if any. Perhaps incense, a ribbon, a picture of a saint or an offering.

People had graffitied the 10,000 year old paintings. Even worse, when I visited Les Eyzies in France, the cave and paintings are permanently sealed and in a pressure/temperaturecontrolled environment, with only top archaeologists allowed access one or two times a year. This is due to the mould and other damage caused by the abuse of people in the early days of their discovery; wild parties, drinking and smoking inside the cave.

These things break my heart.The alchemy can either create the very sacred or can desecrate, depending upon the mind-set of the person going there.

So you can see, this is why I hope to impart a little something that may assist.

This is what I do. I create an invocation, where I call on the beings *WLMU and the ancestors, spirit of the Earth, devas and ask that they be present and guide the journey. As a rule, I invoke this before departing, with bags packed, asking that it span the journey. I repeat this before entering the sites, then give thanks when exiting and on arriving home.

To make sure my energy-field is as clean as it can be, I do a personal cleansing ritual.

I have the attitude of “How can I be of service?”, “How can I value add to this place?” rather than what can I get from or to dump my mental and emotional garbage there. This purification technique allows me to receive as much information as possible from beyond the mind, whilst present at the site.

I include the law of three; Father, Son and Holy Spirit or Maiden, Mother and Crone, as you prefer. I may perambulate the circumference of a site three times clockwise before entering, depending on its size!

Possibly the reverse before exiting. While there, I ask the site to show me where to walk, how to be and interact. I listen. That is one of the most important things. Listen!

To me, the golden rule is treat all places and all life as sacred and leave it in a better condition that you received it.

When two family members became ill, she left teaching
