February 2020 In This Issue There are some fascinating columns in this issue I have to say and it’s made for some interesting reading. However, what’s knocked me around is our spotlight on Domestic Violence (DV).
Derran has written a fantastic column about how to get help in DV situations. Coming from a background in Mental Health, Derran’s experience really shines through in her work in this area. We also have a unique feature that’s been written by a lovely lady, preferring to remain anonymous, of her experience in DV and how she managed to stand up to it, get through it and come out the other side, still remaining a beautiful person. It’s compelling reading. Add to that, a story straight out of a horror movie. Freya Sampson, a regular contributor for Supernal, takes us through her life living with DV. This harrowing tale is so remarkable you couldn’t make it up. The story flows from childhood through multiple relationships of DV where, after each one, she thought she had broken through the energy behind it. It wasn’t until a Crystal Dreaming session revealed
a terrible past life that Freya was able to finally lay to rest the demons of her life living with DV. This two-part story has been modified to suit the magazine’s pages; however, in another first for Supernal; we have a special bonus episode coming out of the whole story – it’s utterly riveting! We’ll let you know when it’s available for a free download. As always, we are open to feedback, good, bad or otherwise and suggestions on how we can keep Supernal growing. Our ultimate goal is to be the most widely read magazine with the most significant subscriber base in Australia and of course, create a vast worldwide audience. We need your help to achieve this, so please encourage your friends and family to subscribe! Have a Supernal month reading the mag and listening to us on the wireless and/or podcast page from March 15!

condolences to the families of those firefighters who gave their lives to save our country. No words can be uttered eloquently enough to say thank you and that you will be remembered!
Sadly there is also a lot in the media about scams, rip-offs, people money gouging and charities withholding funds, some of which is discussed in Jane Offer’s reflections column this month. From the blame game about land management, climate change and responsibility of the community, there’s so much anger and negativity.
To those firefighters that have fought and are still fighting, these crazy beasts of flames and destruction, our thoughts are with you. Thoughts of courage, tenacity, strength, conviction, love and caring – please stay safe knowing you are loved and respected for the efforts you are contributing to the communities, the country and the planet as a whole!
While the media and others can concentrate on the negative side of things, there’s a massive amount of people quietly doing extraordinary things to help out our fire survivors from supplying food for animals and people to knitted clothing for animals and people. Here at Supernal, we wanted to acknowledge as many people as we could find doing great work for our country. Of course, we have the big organisations, but it’s the smaller groups that are bending over backwards to contribute in a caring and positive way. Feeling Guilty? Something that has not been discussed openly is that some people feel guilty for not being able to contribute money or other goods to help. From my perspective, regardless of the situation, just adding your positive prayers and affirmations to the collective of other’s thoughts and prayers out there is more than enough! Just know that even if you are not in a position to donate a service that’s okay too. If every person sent positive vibes out there, it would help. Mental Health ers tt a M Behind Closed Doors: Impacts of - Domestic Violence How to Get Help!
By Derran Heney Mental Health Professional
Both men and women can experience family and domestic violence. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC, 2016),
“Australian police are called to deal with domestic violence (DV) situations every two minutes.”
This sheds light on the extent and epidemic proportions of this serious issue. More statistics are available here: https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/ understand-domestic-violence/ facts-violence-women/domestic-violence-statistics/ The Department of Human Services (2019) defines family and domestic violence as any behaviour that is violent, abusive, threatening or controlling in nature, causing a person to feel unsafe.
10
Supernal Magazine
Behaviours identified under the banner of ‘family and domestic violence’ are not limited to, but include, physical or sexual assault, threats, verbal abuse, psychological and emotional blackmail, using technology to abuse or for surveillance, stalking and predatory behaviours, keeping a person under surveillance and control. The Family Violence Protection Act (2008) further defines family violence as any behaviour that causes a child to hear, witness or otherwise be exposed to the effects of these behaviours. (Family Violence Protection Act, 2008, Section 57). Victims of DV can experience extreme fear, emotional distress, ongoing psychological and physical trauma; anxiety, depression, irritability,
“Family Violence Intervention Orders (FVIO) are designed to protect people who are exposed to these behaviours where perpetrators cannot control their behaviours…” helplessness and suicidality. Victims don’t readily report DV due to worry about being believed. DV occurs most often behind closed doors with perpetrators of DV appearing very different to the outside world. Children in DV situations commonly experience anxiety, hypervigilance, low self-esteem and strong emotions like anger, extreme sadness, and feeling afraid for the safety of themselves or loved ones. Children can experience stress and emotionally based physical symptoms, i.e. headaches, tummy aches and insomnia.
mental health “Prominent role models demonstrating poor adult coping, by way of abusive, controlling or maladaptive behaviours can be detrimental to children’s wellbeing.” Not only are children impressionable, but they also don’t have the coping skills to deal with such stressors, which may lead to ongoing poor mental health. Research indicates only a very low percentage of those who engage in abusive, controlling actions change their behaviour. Factors that impact this lack of change include a strong sense of entitlement to behave the way they want to towards others. A lack of insight, their behaviours are abusive, lack of empathy and attitudes or actions that were learned early in life (National Domestic Violence Hotline, 2020). Given this, when considering leaving an abusive relationship, it can be a good idea to find support, discuss options and plan your exit (if safe to do so). Some support services to help are: - Safe Steps 1800 015 188 - Men’s Referral Service 1300 766 491 - Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Service 1800 015 188 If in immediate danger call 000. What if behaviours don’t stop? Family Violence Intervention Orders (FVIO) are designed to protect people exposed to these behaviours, where perpetrators cannot control their actions and where there is a risk to safety (physical or psychological).
Police can take out FVIO’s on behalf of others in emergency situations, however, anyone can directly make an application to the magistrates’ courts. The application forms can be found online on their website. A magistrate hears the cases. Evidence is helpful including a diary of incidents, victim impact statements, witness testimony, text messages, emails and professional reports of injuries/incidences, phone messages, CCTV footage, photographic or any other evidence. Some useful information here: https://www.mcv.vic.gov.au/going-court/family-violence An interim order may be made until a further court hearing. Going to court can be very anxiety-provoking. Applicants may feel concerned about their safety and wellbeing. Safe rooms are available with separate entry, exit and waiting areas until the court hearing, to avoid contact with the other party. Safety is a high priority, as is lessening the effect of stress and fear on the applicant. When perpetrators of violence are served with an FVIO, it can lead to an escalation in abusive behaviours. If breaches of the order occur, these must be reported to the police. There are severe consequences including being charged by police, behaviour change program attendance, fines, community-based orders and imprisonment. https://mcv.vic.gov.au/intervention-orders/family-violence/ breaches
What else to do if you take out an FVIO: - Keep copies of FVIO: at home, work, the car. Ensure neighbours and children’s schools have a copy and know what to do if breaches occur. - Record incidents (date/time/ what occurred). Keep evidence. Report to the police. - Seek support - learn steps to take to ensure safety. How to respond if a person discloses family or domestic violence If in immediate danger call police 000. Treat the situation seriously. Validate their feelings. Acknowledge it’s been hard for them to discuss. Enquire about what they want to do about their situation. Explore supports/ options together. A supportive person with an empathic response can make all the difference! If you need further assistance or are worried about someone, Make a call!

the
mentalist by Jason D Varga
HYPNOSIS: Mind, Myths and Magic So, what is hypnosis? Let’s start by clearing up some myths. Hypnosis is not some magical power that comes from my eyes. It’s not a magical power at all, although, you can have some magical outcomes via the use of hypnosis. Hypnosis is simply a psychological process to obtain a very natural state of mind. One of the first questions I ask a new client is “Have you ever been hypnotised before?” The answer usually is no, but here is the thing, we have all experienced naturally a hypnotic state, at some point. Do you ever daydream? Just letting your conscious mind drift. Have you ever had an emotional reaction to a movie, crying at a sad moment? Have you ever driven home, arrived at your destination and not really recalled the trip itself? Most
12
Supernal Magazine
people will answer yes to the above, and these are but a few examples of how we drift into a hypnotic state easily, many times a day. Advertising people use this state of being to their advantage. Imagine you are sitting watching TV, drifting into a relaxed state and an ad comes on for some product. Suddenly you want to go out and buy the product. Alternatively, you may end up with the jingle or catchphrase stuck in your memory for eternity. This is a classic example of being in a hypnotic state.
“You see, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, the hypnotist is just there to facilitate the process.” Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not sleep; in fact, it’s a more heightened aware state. Hypnotists have been using the command ‘sleep’ for so long that most clients expect it. We could use any other phrase, ‘rest now’, ‘relax’ and so on, but because most people are familiar with the ‘SLEEP’ command, it’s accepted readily. I have had some people on stage where all
they needed to know was that I was a hypnotist - and just that one word alone would put them into a hypnotic trance state. You see, all hypnosis is selfhypnosis; the hypnotist is just there to facilitate the process. They then give suggestions or imagery to the client’s subconscious to create beneficial changes. That is why all competent hypnotherapists should have a firm grounding in psychology and be masterful storytellers, to create metaphors or imagery for change. Anyone can learn a hypnotic induction; however, it’s the work done while the client is in the hypnotic state that is the important part. Real hypnosis is definitely not like in the movies. The hypnotised subject does not become some sort of robotic slave under the total control of the hypnotist! And a person will never do anything that is against
mental health more and more reports of hypnosis used in the established medical industry. This gives me hope that one day this amazing tool will become more widely accepted and used.
their morals or ethics under hypnosis. If I told a person to go out and rob a bank for me, they would snap out of it instantly rejecting the suggestion. However that said, if the person was already that way inclined, they may follow that command. Hypnosis has been in the shadow of mysticism and parlour tricks for so long, there have been some crazy myths built around it. Only now is hypnosis being recognised for the wonderful healing tool it is. I am seeing
We know that we can change our habits, heal our bodies, let go of trauma, build new positive belief systems with the incredible power of our minds. Most people strongly believe this though generally sabotage their own healing with fear, doubt or negative thinking. This is why hypnosis can help; the hypnotist, using the correct suggestions, can bypass those blocks so that the client can heal themselves.
“...and a person will never do anything that is against their morals or ethics under hypnosis.” I have seen many amazing outcomes from behavioural changes to physiological changes via hypnosis. Still, I do not take the credit. I was
only there to guide the client to heal themselves with the power of their mind. A client who had suffered a particular condition for four years, walked into their specialist a few weeks after one session with me and was amazed that the symptoms and the disease had vanished. That is a true reflection of just how powerful the human mind is. Hypnosis is not unlike an excellent guided meditation. Medicine people, shaman, whatever you wish to call them, have been using the power of altered states and positive suggestions since the dawn of humanity. No matter how they dress it up, or what ritual they perform around it, at its core, it’s simply allowing the client to heal themselves. They can rid themselves of anxiety, fears and negative belief systems, get in touch with their higher selves, and open up their psychic abilities all via their subconscious minds! ESPecially best wishes, The Mentalist

Over the Rainbow Dress For Success by Celeste de Vis I volunteer for the Salvation Army, Western Port Mission Centre. My role is Volunteer Coordinator of Emergency Relief Services. This is highly rewarding, yet at times complex and emotionally taxing. We provide material aid, such as free pantry food items, including baked goods and fruit/ veggies, act as a referral service, provide pastoral care and also offer our centre as a ‘drop-in’ centre for a cuppa and chat. Each year, community service organisations on the Mornington Peninsula are invited to attend a Material Aid Forum. The aim is to ensure that we all leave armed with the most current and relevant information about our fellow service providers. Referrals to other providers are an essential part of our role to best support our clients. It was during the 2018 Material Aid Forum that I met with Dress for Success South East Melbourne. The representatives described their service as one where they provide good quality, designer brand clothing free to members of the
14
Supernal Magazine
community. This service supports people who are not able to financially acquire clothing for events, such as job interviews and employment. Dress for Success runs approximately one and a half hour appointments, working one on one with each client. The personalised dressing session is undertaken by trained volunteers , and additionally, they offer a oneon-one interview coaching/ mentoring session to help improve client confidence and interview skills. But the relationship does not end there. After a client finds work, they or their agency can rebook another visit to the Dress for Success Styling
Suite. They can then obtain further free work-ready outfits. I was also pleased to learn from the representatives that they were working alongside a transgender woman named Rebecca, who was providing individual support to the transgender community. The program is called Be Who You Are (BWYA). As quoted from their website, this program is, ‘exclusively for transgender women at any stage of their journey. Treat yourself to a one-onone styling session in the wonderful Dress for Success South East Melbourne Styling Suite: a great way to explore your passion for fashion in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment’. I organised to chat with Rebecca to discuss this valuable service offered at the Frankston store.
Rebecca, how did you find out about the BWYA program at Dress for Success?
LGBTQI+ I accepted an invite to the forum; BWYA in Frankston, which was given to me by my Job Network WCN Jobs in Frankston. Be Who You Are was a workshop in which some clothing and make-up was supplied for use. I assisted the others in answering questions, telling my own story and listening to their stories. We had about six participants in the group, plus the ladies who worked in the shop. The lady who presented the workshop was Tanya Williams.
How many people would you typically see in a week?
What are the benefits of providing the service?
I do tend to go there every couple of weeks and see about half a dozen people, who are transgender.
The sizes are suitable but, as you know, you have to try the clothing on, as labels vary with fitting. There is a variety of apparel from corporate to casual, as well as shoes, bags and of course, make-up.
What is one of the most common remarks you hear from the transgender community about clothing? Some of them say that there are not enough clothing places that treat you with respect, but they do here.
Alongside this, they give you instruction on what suits the individual, interview techniques, postemployment guidance and confidence building.
What would you want everyone to know about the service that you provide? This service is an excellent way to help people who are transgender to fit better in society, gain a job, and above all, hold their head high. I’m often asked by people if they look good in this or that when I am there looking for clothing myself. This program is a valuable service that should be put out there and shared around networks. The workshop is excellent for the Transgender community. and I would highly recommend doing the Be Who You Are workshop. Dress For Success South East Melbourne is located at Bayside Shopping Centre, Frankston. To find out more details, or when the next workshop will be running, visit

Manifesting Maven Imposter Syndrome – What You Need to Know By Dr Brooklyn Storme PhD Have you ever said things like this to yourself, in your business: “I’m not qualified enough to speak about that”, “What makes me an authority on this subject area?”, “I’m not good enough to do that” and similar things? If so, it may be that you were experiencing what we call Imposter Syndrome. By definition, Imposter Syndrome is ‘the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills’ (Oxford Dictionary, 2020).
16
Supernal Magazine
It affects more entrepreneurs than not and it’s mostly women that experience the condition. There’s been a great deal of research undertaken, and many agree that there are five types of Imposter Syndrome. The first is - Superman or Superwoman. Perhaps you can recall a time in your workplace where there was one person that always arrived early or stayed back late. They volunteered for everything and were always busy, running from room to room or desk to desk. They may talk quickly, or look at their watch, or be huffing
and puffing from the energy they were exerting? This type of Imposter Syndrome usually occurs when someone is feeling less than competent with the work they should be doing. To compensate for that lack of competency and fear of being ‘found out’, they distract themselves and those around them by engaging in busy work. This works for a while, but a savvy manager or team member will often be able to determine what’s really going on for that person.
business might say that they collect certificates, diplomas and degrees. The Expert panics when people seek them out for help because they underestimate their skills and abilities.
Another type of Imposter Syndrome is - The Perfectionist. This person is often consumed by making everything in their business, even their day-to-day tasks, precisely right because if they make a mistake, they will feel like a fraud. This type of Imposter Syndrome is a difficult one to manage, especially for new entrepreneurs who feel like they are on a huge learning curve. They are not only learning their actual job role, but they are also now needing to learn how to market the business, how to balance the books, how to create a business strategy and more. The fear of making a mistake and being ‘found out’ as not knowing it all or having all the answers is palpable. The Expert is the third type. This person focusses their energy on what they know and on how much they know, to feel safe in their business. But what can end up happening is, that they never feel like they know enough and that means that they never feel like they are ‘good enough’ to do their job or share their knowledge. This personality can find themselves continually enrolling in courses to acquire new knowledge and friends Images supplied by Upsplash & Pixabay
The fourth type is - The Natural Genius. This type of personality is characterised by having things come very easily and very naturally to them. This person didn’t have to apply themselves too diligently to meet the expectations of others, learn new information, perform a task. The pitfall for this type of personality can be when they find themselves in a new or foreign situation and they don’t know what to do. That experience can make them feel profoundly uneasy because they are not used to the process of adapting and learning in the same way as their peers. Finally, there is - The Soloist. This type is often characterised as an individual who feels that they need to be highly competent in every area of running the business. They feel that they must be able to do everything. The problem here however, can be when the Soloist runs into a tricky situation at work that propels them into a position of needing to ask for help. It’s the asking for help that triggers feelings of inadequacy, incompetence and of being a fraud. It’s often, for those reasons, that they’ll avoid asking for help and they’ll put themselves through all kinds of pain to find the solutions or answers for themselves.
Imposter Syndrome is a commonly occurring experience in business and it’s seen more often in younger women than men, mostly in the entrepreneurial space. The good news is that when you start to work in a way that is aligned with who you are, who you serve and how you serve them, a lot of these fears tend to fall by the wayside naturally. For other people, it might take longer and be a bit more challenging. In this case, I strongly recommend you seek support from someone like a Business Coach. I’d be more than happy to help you, so feel free to connect anytime. Let’s make ‘alignment’ your motto for 2020

Invisible Scars
the unseen wounds of an emotionally abusive relationship
The following story offers valuable insights into what it’s like to live in an abusive relationship. It was the wish of the author to remain anonymous, and we respect that right. For many people, especially women, simply garnering the strength to bring about change is an extremely difficult task - the task of getting enough support to get to the other side, and find one’s self again. It all started with calling me sickening names - names that no person should ever call a partner. The first time was four months after we bought a home and moved in together. I was distraught and confused, but he had a way of smoothing over the worst of his behaviours, including an uncanny ability to blame me for them. Truth be told, there were many red flags before the name-calling started. These included wanting to move in together quickly and being overly possessive. He could also be wonderful, charismatic, generous and kind. I wanted to invest heavily in the man with those beautiful qualities. With rose coloured glasses on, I chose to overlook the flags and continue our relationship.
“I made daily excuses for his abusive behaviours. He told me I was the problem... I believed him.” After some months, I recognised a pattern beginning to form within
our relationship. We would get along well for a period, then eventually we would argue over something. This could go on for hours. It was exhausting. He would stand in doorways blocking me from leaving the room or follow me around the house, keeping me engaged in battle. I got frustrated, he got frustrated and it would always end with him yelling, calling me the most horrific names repeatedly. It didn’t matter to him if my two children from a previous relationship were at home to hear. After every argument, he would bombard me with voluminous abusive text messages, name-calling and blaming me for everything that went wrong in our entire relationship. Later, he would say sorry, appearing to be remorseful for his behaviour. He would say he would never do it again. I held onto that promise, but instead, the behaviours worsened. Confusion and insecurity grew within me. I pressed on in an unpredictable relationship, clinging to the
good times but also walking on eggshells. Deep down, I knew I was not happy. I started to notice every day that I dreaded him coming home from work. Even if our relationship was in a good space, I felt sick the moment his car pulled in the drive.
“Life was stressful and it became about survival – self-care was not a priority.” He would make inflammatory statements and deny he said them, or change the tone from the way he said it initially, to make something sound more benign than it was. Or deny it, claiming that I must have heard wrong. A tactic called gaslighting. He’d talk to others about me behind my back and then enjoy telling me the derogatory things they said about me. He would involve his family, friends, doctor and a woman to whom he was aligning himself closely. Even though we had a very young child, I later found out that he was making future plans with this other woman.

“I have learned to trust my intuition – if something doesn’t feel right, there’s usually a good reason.” He lied to me for years about this. He would lecture and criticise me, especially concerning the children. He would start conversations he knew would spark conflict moments before I had to leave for work, or he’d walk out/leave our home, preventing me from going to work due to children needing care. I became frustrated and very anxious. I focused on keeping the peace, agreeing to appease him just to be able to get to do normal things like get to work on time. It was getting embarrassing turning up late to work, with unlikely excuses. Things escalated rapidly and I felt genuine fear and concern for myself and my children. In short I ended the relationship (there is a whole other backstory here) and unbelievably, things took a turn for the worse. Again being prevented from

going to work, I was yelled at for an entire day, called the most horrific names and head-butted in the kitchen with our young child in the next room crying; making him aware of this made no difference to his focus on me.

house, other rubbish, broken items and a compost bin full of cat excrement. He kept going day and night, despite being asked not to. It was extremely stressful, a nightmare situation. I felt sick all the time and I couldn’t sleep. My children were distressed and being detrimentally affected.
There were other physical incidents before this; things were escalating quickly. It was only a matter of time before I got seriously hurt. I left the family home and moved to a rental with the children. I later found out he would talk to others about being violent with me and justify this in various ways.
I finally got the courage to go to the police to discuss an Intervention Order (IVO). He somehow found out. He told me that bikers he knew are watching me, since I’d gone to the police. I believed him. I was now in a high state of hypervigilance, watching over my shoulder, feeling nauseous and shaky every time my phone alerted me with a message, or there was a knock at the door. I couldn’t focus at home, at work – it was all too much!
Leaving did not give us peace. I received more angry, abusive texts and emails. Sometimes over a 100 in one day alone. I received threats of implied harm by a third party if I didn’t tell him things, or he would threaten to post on Facebook audio recordings of our arguments. He would come to my rental home, bringing furniture from our
It sounds crazy to me now that I didn’t go through with an IVO with all that going on. I felt intimidated, scared and concerned for our safety. I worried that an IVO couldn’t protect me, as we lived nearby and would make his anger worse! I attempted to set boundaries on my own, but he’d get angry and did not respect them. I made daily excuses for his abusive
feature
behaviours. He told me that I was the problem; I caused him to become angry. I believed him. One year after separation, I finally applied through the courts for an IVO. I wish I had sought one earlier. Although he continued to breach it, the police took it very seriously, as did the courts and he was incarcerated. But I had lost myself. The abuse, especially the namecalling affected my selfworth. It was like a fog had washed over me during this time. Life was stressful and it became about survival – self-care was not a priority. Thankfully, I was referred to a Domestic Violence Caseworker. She offered fantastic support. I received funding for CCTV in my home and to change the locks, which helped me to feel safer. She helped me to put some personal goals and a safety plan in place. It’s now five years since separation. It’s taken me a long time to get my sense of self back, but I can now say I’m thrilled. There is life after a toxic, emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship! I know I would now not tolerate
disrespectful, abusive behaviours from anyone. I understand my worth more than ever and I am grateful for that. I have learned to trust my intuition – if something doesn’t feel right, there’s usually a good reason. I’d been overriding my intuition most of my life, not anymore! While it took me a while to get there, valuable life lessons have come from this experience. I am proud I have demonstrated to my children, the strength and bravery required to take a stand against abuse in any form, to expect respect.
“It’s now five years since separation. It’s taken me a long time to get my sense of self back.” There is a wealth of support out there for people who experience family violence. Going alone in situations like mine is scary and unnecessary. I had good friends and counsellor support. Police have specialised family violence units and helped explain the court process for the IVO and gave excellent advice for maintaining safety.

my truth is stranger than fiction The true story of one woman’s journey through domestic violence and beyond.
by Freya Sampson 26

feature When regular columnist Freya offered to share her journey through domestic violence (DV), the story opened up doorways to other times and experiences that could never be dreamed up. This is a very abridged version of that story; a bonus episode of the full story will be available via the Supernal Website/Podcast page. The content of this story may be confronting in its subject matter to some readers, but is invaluable in its insight and overall is a very powerful, emotional and engaging story that is, as the title suggests, a true story stranger than fiction.
With trepidation, I placed my head in the Crystal Dreaming mandala. There is no way forward without going back. Terrifying cellular memory threatened to overwhelm. “Nooooo!” The ominous black wormhole loomed, I was being drawn into it. ‘Run!’ screamed through me. I did not, my soul would no longer tolerate this abuse. Now it’s time to clear this repeat pattern of DV in my life, once and for all.
The Beginning: Childhood I was sensitive to ‘energy’. It was ‘normal’ to me, to see, hear and know things. My family described me as having an overactive imagination and ‘away with the fairies’. Years of this misguided imprinting wore me down, I began to believe it was true, which started a self-abuse pattern. To numb my senses, I abused
substances and self-harmed. Nothing worked - by 13, I was suicidal. I was plagued by a recurring dream - chased by a predatory man, meaning me serious harm. I thought a lot about it, concluding, the way to meet tyranny is with love - not a ‘normal’ child’s response. My family was not ‘functional’. My nurse mum was 22 years younger than dad. She left nursing to become a full-time homemaker. She showed love by making food and doing acts of service. She was not affectionate towards me; no-one in my home ever said, “I love you.” Dad, an accountant, was money focused. His first marriage failed, due to his cheating wife. Traumatised by this, he became obsessive, trying to prevent this from repeating; he insanely called and tracked mum’s every move. Threatening to burn her Uni study books if she went back there. She didn’t! Mum also has no sense of time, amplifying dads fear. Dad was four when his father died, thereafter raised by his grandmother while his mother worked. His attitude, ‘Children should be seen and not heard’ was the
polar opposite to mum. All of their beliefs were opposite. He was old-school, 48yo when I was born.
“There was no love, tenderness or intimacy, only constant power struggles.” Mum told me she and dad had a fight, which lead to him punching her. She hit him back, throwing a solid 1970s green-glass ashtray through his precious colour TV. He never raised his fist to her again. Mum didn’t tolerate the physical abuse, yet allowed mental, emotional and financial abuses, deciding it’s better to stay for the children’s sake. She became withdrawn. There was no love, tenderness or intimacy, only constant power struggles. I was the go-between, attempting to fix everything with my brother, like dad, suffering life-threatening asthma and allergies from birth, adding more stress to the scenario. The neurosis created by dad was so controlling, mum became obsessivecompulsive and deceitful. She hid purchases because dad controlled life through money - even budgeting her tampons.

leave with this man, whom I had no clue about. We left and shared each other’s woeful stories. We decided it was a good idea to stay together. He was 33, although he looked in his 20s. I was 15, nearly 16. I’d betrayed and broken my boyfriend’s heart. No one knew where I was. My parents, already distressed, now freaked out. I was four when Dad was involved in a severe collision. His lung crushed and leg broken, he was on oxygen 24-hours a day, my childhood was utterly destroyed. I took solace in nature, as animals are easy to communicate with. They don’t complicate matters, whereas humans do! Starved of affection, understanding and dealing with her OCD, mum’s energy was focused on the fulltime job of caring for my dad and brother - life was a nightmare. Aged 12, to get my mother’s attention, I manifested whooping-cough, then asthma. When I complained, my mother’s response was, “Don’t be ridiculous, you’re not nearly unwell enough.” I thought, ‘I feel terrible – I’m over this.’ Deciding not to have asthma or allergies anymore, they went away. Depressed and suicidal - I fostered another plan. At 15 years, I created a fight with mum, pushing buttons until she said, “Get out, go on pack your bags, leave.” Success! I had my leave pass.

Fast Forward My boyfriend and I moved in together; my parents were unimpressed. My boyfriend’s father was a severe lecher. I told my boyfriend, he couldn’t deal with it, so I decided to find another boyfriend. I saw ‘him’ standing on the balcony, looking out over the neighbourhood, wearing a black leather jacket, blue bonds singlet and jeans. Dark skin, black wavy hair and curls. Magnetised, I struck up a conversation. At his friend’s apartment, we smoked a joint. Lip locked and stoned, I thought it would be a great idea to
We moved in together, beginning my 4-year relationship with a wifebeater. The honeymoon phase passed swiftly. Like my father, only worse, he was twisted in ways beyond my comprehension. I lived in a state of terror! With a firearms license and semi-automatic rifle, he explained his intent to track down his ex. She’d left taking their newborn to her mother’s place, far away. With a frightening internalised rage, he planned to blow up the apartment of his ex’s mother, after taking the child. He would make explosives - he had it all planned. This was
feature his final straw, having lost three children to ex-partners. He was beyond dangerous, with the training of an Army Boarding School, where his childhood trauma was amplified. The class system was in full effect when he was a child. Being the darkest child earned his mother’s disdain. She denied he was hers and illegitimate, born before his mother’s marriage to his step-father. Never knowing his father and loathing his mother, they moved to Australia. His siblings transitioned well, but he looked Aboriginal. Australia was rather a racist place in the sixties, so he was outcast. He was stoned regularly walking to school. Together with the ethos of sorting out disagreements in the boxing-ring in school, this created his violent disposition. He had no respect for women. He threatened that if I tried to leave him, he would shoot me and bury me under a building site.
Enraged, he would drag me to one, scaring me senseless. He threatened my family’s lives and those of his ex and her mother. I stayed in this relationship, I didn’t want to be responsible for any deaths. I resolved that if I could love him, everything would be okay.
“I stayed in this relationship. I didn’t want to be responsible for any deaths.” With a high sex-drive, I was forced multiple times daily to satisfy him. My free-will was never considered. I pretended to enjoy it to save a beating, which backfired - the fetishes became more twisted. Unspeakable things! My head was always sore to touch and, with the occasionally visible bruising from daily beatings, I had become expert at playing the silly female; it was easy to pass off - my life depended on it. I loved this man. During my childhood, I had been a rescuer - I loved my parents. I believed I needed to fix everything for everyone! He was insanely jealous; I was not allowed to look at or talk to men. If he witnessed this, I was up for a beating, then twisted sex. I wasn’t allowed alcohol, ever! I dressed like a tomboy, wearing jeans and shirts. In private, I was a doll for him to dress and redress at his pleasure. The resistance beaten out of
me, I accepted it was my choice to stay. To survive, I disassociated. Unending death threats - completely powerless, I believed everything he said. Now 18, Centrelink forced me to get a job. This was my first time in the world in nearly four years. Work was two kilometres from home, so I cycled. Coming home, a vehicle hit me from behind. I flew over the handlebars, face-planted seriously grazing my body. Stunned, I dragged myself up to see the car who’d hit me speed off when they realised I wasn’t dead. Gobsmacked, I walked home. At first he actually seemed concerned about my wellbeing, but an hour later, he started. I could scarcely believe it; he was going to beat me now too. At that moment, I snapped out of delusion. Realising, he simply didn’t care. I couldn’t take this anymore! If he went down this path then I was out, I would leave and live, or die trying. He couldn’t help himself. I said, “I’ve been hit by a car, leave me alone.” I walked away, I was no longer a willing victim. He tried to grab me, and I dodged him. Furious, he lunged at me, I let my body drop, pulling him off balance, he fell. “ F*#%ing bitch!” He drew his fist back and punched my eye. I felt every cell rupture. The look on his face - shock. This is a coward’s worst nightmare. This could not be explained away or hidden

under clothes and hair. The expression of horror was unmistakable. He polarised, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it.” With more selfdetermination than I had felt in years and seeing my eye, blood-red in a mirror, I said, “You will never touch me again!” His mood swung wildly, despondent, threatening to kill himself, then polarising, threatening to kill me. I told him, “Go ahead! If you’re going to do it, just do it.” Days blurred as I devised my exit. I had been cut off from anyone I’d ever known, except my parents. Over the next week, things were strained. Resolved to leave, come what may, one thought that kept going through my mind was how grateful I was not to be bound to him by a child. Before I left, we spoke. “You are angry with your mother for abandoning you. You have taken this out on every woman you have been with.” There was more said. “It’s not that I don’t love you, I cannot trust you. You need counselling, I cannot do that for you.” He broke down, crying, “You’re right.” “I’m leaving, there’s nothing you can do to prevent this.” This was true as, although

I escaped, although living in fear of his retribution. He called my parents’ home and threatened us. I moved to keep my family safe. He disappeared, though I always watched over my shoulder, hearing his voice – “I’ll kill you!”
Years Pass I had a major awakening because I’d relentlessly sought the answers within myself. Answers to all of those questions I’d been asking – “Why me? What is going on in this world?” I was outside my apartment and the sky looked strange. The hour before dusk, the colours and hue, the cloud formations, all of it, surreal. I couldn’t put my finger on why.
“Although I feared for my life, I had surrendered to the possibility of death.” The moon was full, high in the sky. The wind blew clouds across it - I yearned to see its beauty, then suddenly I could, clear as day, as though the clouds weren’t there at all. I pinched myself, nothing changed. I realised that I could move through the moon. Extra odd and felt it too! Years later, I discovered that the moon is known in ancient mystery schools
as a gateway between dimensions/worlds. I practised going through and back, repeatedly. I had an epiphany at age 23! My life’s experiences suddenly made sense. The pain and suffering created by suppressing the truth of who I am, made-way for the opportunity of what I was now experiencing. Wild things happened from that moment onward. One day, while sitting in my lounge room, my consciousness turned to something uncomfortable within. In that moment a being descended, vast beyond measure. Encircling me with its wings, it telepathed, “Your father is going to die.” Internally screaming, No, I’m not ready!” This Archangel, infinitely compassionate, telepathed, “You have six months.” And gave me a choice of two courses of action. I chose the path where I took responsibility for my dharma and karma. The Archangel expressed to me how I would help him with his passing, then my brother and others and this would be a part of my life’s greater work. After that visit, I moved nearer to my parents’ home. My father died that year. I returned to my studies. Nine months after dad, my brother committed suicide. I managed my grief, and mum’s will to die with work and study, somehow attaining two awards, drawing top of my graduate class.
feature
One morning I arose knowing I would no longer live in fear. I listed my phone number publicly. One week later came a phone call! I was ready to face him and leave our relationship in the past. He asked to see me, saying, “You remember you said to get counselling. The next step in my recovery is to meet, if you are willing.” We set a time and place for that evening. I knew it was important to reward his inner work and to get closure. I rang a close friend who agreed to be my safeperson. We met. It was strange to see him again, youthful as ever. We spoke, it was almost like talking to an old friend. He got down to business and was visibly pained – I felt compassion.
“If I held a grudge in my heart, it would only cause me pain. Like drinking poison and expecting you to die.” We made peace and agreed not to see each other again. I thought, I’m free - finally, I’m free.
Flash forward to 2006 Called by Spirit, I moved to the Daintree Rainforest because I had been in a poor relationship with a man for some time. Apparently, I hadn’t learned my lesson about ‘rescuing’ properly yet.
“Yes, of course, actually, I forgave you a long time ago.”
One day I became so frustrated with his refusal to be cheerful or positive about anything, I lost my mastery and flipped over the coffee table. In that single motion, I had moved from victim to perpetrator, the epitome of that which I despised. I knew I had some inner work to do. I slept. Awoken by a hand, stroking my back. “Come now, it’s time to move to the Daintree,” a woman’s voice said.
Wide-eyed, tears on his cheeks, he said, “But how? How can you forgive me? The things I did...”
My psychic awareness amplified in the peaceful ancient Daintree Rainforest; full of wildlife - I made

friends with them all. Again I dreamed - a man chasing me. He meant me harm. Terrified, I flew out of my body and went straight to the door – locked, he loomed behind me! Realising I was dreaming, I woke up. There over me in the air I could see the man who’d been chasing me in my dreams since childhood! Fear surged, I called my angels; their loving protection filled the room. A long adventure-story short, I received an energyhealing from an Indigenous Shaman in the Daintree, followed by another from Parvati in NSW. This cleared some past-life connection to the spirit from my dreams. These experiences led me to Raym, of the Crystal Dreaming modality. Eventually, I left NSW, moving back to WA to open a Harmony Centre, which... didn’t go according to plan! Freya’s story will continue in next month’s issue of Supernal Magazine. Beautiful Duality
Masculine Vs Feminine
Jane Offer
Many of us older folk will have been brought up with the idea of inherent qualities that are exclusively male or female. We were raised with marked gender concepts in what was acceptable as normal childhood development; toys were assessed by gender, as were the choices of school subjects. I badly wanted a train set but was told that ‘only boys played with trains’. There are many views on the sources of this thinking, including the belief in the oppression of women over the centuries being its primary purpose. However, while this may be so in many cases, it is also based in a misinterpretation that this is a purely physical agenda when, in fact, personal power is not gender-related. As a child, I was told many stories by my grandmother Violet of the struggle of the Suffragettes to gain equal rights within a maledominated society. And that was the point, equal
34
Supernal Magazine
rights and not a desire to reverse dominate. Violet was born in 1895 in the UK and, at 23, she saw the right to vote granted for women over 30 years old. She continued to be staunchly committed to equal rights all her life, especially in the 1960s, the period of my teenage years. Violet was a businesswoman, property owner, entrepreneur and an inspiration. She used masculine principles to forge her way, was completely
non-maternal yet very feminine in her appearance. In this day and age, she would have been a fearless business force, very much entrenched in the use of her masculine energy. In the 21st century, we now understand much more about the duality of our being; that we all
hold both masculine and feminine energy. We know the value and purpose of both, in that the masculine principle is related to aspects of analytical thinking, reasoning, strength and action, while the feminine is related to compassion, nurturing, receptivity, empathy and the emotional approach to a situation. We are also aware that we can no longer suppress either side of our nature, realising that any sense of conflict or loss of power is generated from an imbalance of these two elements. This difference of approach was clearly shown in the interview with both Jacinda Ardern and Scott Morrison following the eruption of the White Island volcano in New Zealand. The critical factor to remember is that this energy alignment is not a competition – neither is more important than another, each holding a powerful place in our evolvement. For example, we need the masculine aspects to
in focus develop action strategies, to play chess, to cut down a tree or to research for a science project. We need the receptivity of new ideas, the creative ability to produce beautiful artwork, to speak with compassion and encouragement to a person that is hurting, through the nurturing nature of the feminine. When we can balance this within, we have a much larger toolkit to employ in our daily life. At this point, we can avoid apportioning blame and looking to override the power of another. We can balance our energy, enabling us to stand strong in our power. It’s a common suggestion that when a child is bullied, enrol them into a martial arts class. This is not to develop aggression or the ability to defend themselves physically, it is to align their energy and to stand tall. When this is in place, it shows itself outwardly in their whole demeanour; the way they stand, their attitude of calm inner strength and confidence. So how can we do this for ourselves? As the male/ female balance is about energy, then it makes sense to explore an energy-based approach. Here are three suggestions to try out. Meditation gives our mind a space of peace where
we can achieve a calm state and tap into our inner strength. Allow yourself just a little personal time – say 20 minutes a day. Either sit in a quiet space or go for a walk in nature and focus on the activity without letting your mind wander. Do not bottle up your feelings. When we do this, it acts like a pressure valve which ultimately will blow. If you cannot speak about it, write it down. Allow your true feelings to flow onto the paper and, when you have finished, burn it. This is your take on the situation and others may not understand or go into denial, adding to your frustration. Burning is a cleansing and separation from your energy. Life is in constant change so, rather than reacting to the stress, take a moment to view each situation holistically. Assess the approach that will bring the optimum result. Does it require the masculine approach of strategic thinking, or does it need to be the feminine principle of nurture and creative resolution? Either way, try to resist the normal human reaction of feardriven anger. Soul Mastery is taught by Jane Offer and offers valuable insights into creating masculine and feminine balance.

Divine Time The Yellow Brick Road February 2020 is a leap year, 29 days in February. In Dreamspell terms, it unifies with the archetype Hunab-Ku, the great central sun and source of life. ‘I Coordinate in order to potentiate. Enumerating totality, I seal the Cosmos of Unity with the Galactic tone of Emptiness. I am guided by my own power doubled and I am the activator of Galactic Portals. Enter Me.’ We’re off to see the Wizard and many other amazing icons as we travel the golden paved road of 2020. February gives us wheels to go and we can roll with the punches and find ourselves entering Oz. Some of the sights we shall pass by are, the Yellow Warrior, beginning January 24, which exemplifies itself this year in particular as Pathfinder and
Journey Master. No going to sleep in the field of poppies as you explore. You can easily cut your way through red tape and insignificant paraphernalia because there is cause for celebration with an opportunity to heal the very heart of you.
“It will be firmament for your new footsteps and a landscape to restructure a field like the Garden of Eden ready to sow.” As soon as you reach Red Moon Kin on February 6, let your guitar gently weep. Release all that is pent up and vocalise it. Howl at the Moon, or just howl with the White Wind from February 19. Let the Spirit Speak, with breath from your soul. Turn it all around as soon

The Warrior is not afraid to see his or her own measure. The Moon represents the healer and will allow you to assess what you need to do to activate the healing button, which works from the inside out. The Wind speaks its own truth, but also listens to the truth of others and between all; a mediation of voice and ideas can come to the party. This will create that eagle vision and perspective that is good for the one and the all. The Star glistens in the night sky, in the deep subconscious mind, and the tone is set by the 8th Moon of Integrity, of which the totem is the hawk. Be mindful and transparent, but respectful of your own privacy and that of others. Keep your peace and let the world find a little stillness. Big things are coming and February may set the tone for later on. Discover new information and modalities, and fine-tune what works for you. Invent and create and appreciate. When you love what you have, you have what you love! How does it get better than this? Well, wait and see. March will make things
clearer and the view outside the womb of Goddess Earth will be enticing. It will be firmament for your new footsteps and a landscape to restructure, a field like the Garden of Eden ready to sow.
“That which is inside you is all you need to know, and you’ll see that love is more than skin deep.” Are you living what you believe? Remember, belief is a thought that can change. Study it, engage in it and alter it any time you like. When you genuinely believe, you realise you know and what you know, you realise, is basically nothing at all. A minuscule of the infinite surrounds you with the power of grace and that shall indeed lead you home and anywhere else you decide to go.
Cosmic chattering will heighten and you will stretch your ears to hear the words of the creator and enlightenment will become you. Decide that life is worth living and give it a go. Think about things differently; use your intuition and your extra senses. Be the one you were waiting for. Lak’ech ala K’in, ShirleySienna
In the end, you’ll ascend from the rabbit hole and find yourself back in Kansas. That which is inside you, is all you need to know and you’ll see that love is more than skin deep.

Pisces Pisces, twices: two fish swimming in opposite directions. One fish sacred, the other profane. One blissfully flowing with the river toward union with the ocean of life, the other struggling against the current, battling to survive in this harsh and unforgiving material world. One fish, blessed with faith, trust and gratitude, living in a world of magic and wonder, the other

Pisces: Love, Sacred & Profane Human & Mystical anxious, fearful, barely staying afloat. One fish kind, loving and devoted; the other evasive, escapist, prone to go to water when the heat is on. One fish intuitive, compassionate and wise, a sympathetic soul to turn to in troubled times; the other confused, needy, addicted; a ‘would be-could be-should be’, a ‘wannabe’, unable or unwilling to take effective action to improve its lot in life.
“I have known good and evil, sin and virtue, right and wrong / I have judged and been judged / I have passed through birth and death, joy and sorrow, heaven and hell / And in the end I realized that I am in everything, and everything is in me.” – Hasrat Inayat Khan
The final sign in the cycle of the zodiac, Pisceans often find themselves asking “Is this all there is?” And answering their own question with, “If that’s all there is, then let’s keep dancing.” They may then, if they are that kind of fish, go onto the next line of the song, “Let’s bring out the booze, and have a ball.” They feel to the depths of their very soul, “there’s got to be more to life than this”. Channelling Pisces, let me continue. “Ah, woe is me. I must have been born under a bad sign.” Shakespeare was right. Life really is just “a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing”. Pass me another drink please. Suzuki Roshi said it even better: “Life is like setting sail on a boat we all know is someday going to sink”. What kind of God is running this show? God is dead! Long live God! One day I’m going to write a book and expose God for the sham he is. Ah yes, ‘tis
astrology true, I do love to imbibe and wax lyrical. Wasn’t it Homer who said: “Wine can of the wits the wise beguile / Make the sages frolic and the serious smile.” Better stop there, or it could be a long session, but I’m sure you get the drift. Before doing so, however, I simply must offer another take on the state of intoxication so beloved of Pisces: “Taste God’s Love. A few sips of the precious wine of Love will thoroughly intoxicate you. Why leave the full glass untouched on the table while inquiring how the wine was produced or estimating how many gallons may exist in the intimate wine cellar? Do not become distracted by attempting to analyse Divine Mystery.” – Ramakrishna How to define Pisces? Easier to catch a slippery fish with bare hands! Even the very idea of trying to define the sign is against its essential soul and spirit. Definition implies distinctness and clarity, whereas Pisces blends and merges, includes and unites and perceives hidden affinities existing beneath the surface play of individual differences. And values above all what we humans have in common, which at bottom, that we’re all in the same boat, we all know and experience that life is difficult, we all hurt and suffer, we’re all aware we’re
Meye Baba going to die and each and every one of us is therefore tasked with finding a way to live with that realisation and, in the end, when it all comes down to it, love is what it’s all about. Piscean human love yearns above all for a soul connection; a connection that is felt to be so deep and so profound when in full flower, that it transcends the purely physical dimensions of time and space to bloom forever in a realm, not of this world. Nothing less than such a love it seems, can quiet the yearning that burns like an eternal flame in the deeply mystical Piscean heart. The Piscean Indian Spiritual Master, Meher Baba, takes us further into the realms of mystical love in the following beautiful passage:
Albert Einstein “The sojourn of the soul is a thrilling divine romance in which the lover, who in the beginning is conscious of nothing but emptiness, frustration, superficiality, and the gnawing claims of bondage gradually attains an increasingly fuller and freer expression of love. And ultimately, the lover disappears and merges in the divine Beloved to realize the unity of the lover and the Beloved in the supreme and eternal fact of God as infinite Love.”

Enlighten Up
The Breath of Life By Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart
The Cycle of Relationships In the December 2019 issue, we began to delve into the nitty-gritty of relationships. Let’s back up a little and take an overview of where we come from and what relationships really are? Then we can journey back into the nitty-gritty dynamics that make or break our relationships and create the experiences. The very nature of the Divine itself and therefore one’s own true nature, becomes realised through the interplay of souls, through relationships. Thus one could say, at the highest level of truth, a relationship is the vehicle which the Divine has chosen to work through, in order to know thyself, as the perfection of love in all of its forms, in action, to be of service, aka self-realisation. From an individuated perception of creation, which each of us has, what does this mean in everyday life? It’s very easy to take relationships for granted, for

as far back as we can recall in this life, at the point of conception, we come from and through a relationship. From that point onward, we are experiencing how the people around us interact. This occurs through gestation, the growing foetus is a soul’s vessel, moving from a state of oneness into a state of individuation. A soul, therefore, has a relationship with its body. The foetus is experiencing its mother’s responses to all of the energies of life that she is exposed to throughout that period. It is already beginning its relationship with the world. As the body grows, its senses become more specific and targeted, hearing, seeing and feeling. The soul can begin to interact with the people who engage with its mother and with them directly. Birth occurs and the soul, now fully vested into a body, is birthed into the world and
this being takes the next step into self. Still strongly dependent on parental care to provide everything required for his or her healthy development, none-the-less, absorbing and learning all of the time. Imprinting about relationships is already well underway. A relationship, like all things in creation, is cyclical in growth and pattern of flow. There are four phases in any relationship - The Honeymoon, Noticing Differences, Potential Conflict and the Golden Afterglow or Separation. The aim, in a healthy relationship, is ‘Golden Afterglow’ – to grow in harmonic resonance, virtue and love. This can be understood in rational terms through the geometry of the Golden Mean. Born in 384 B.C., Aristotle’s ethics are to be found within the Golden mean, which involves finding
energy
the balance between two means. Aristotle believed this was the best way to live in society, with extremes of character deemed unhelpful. For example, someone who is too assertive may cause others to lose their confidence.
desire to merge with one another sexually; the Gooey, doe eye syndrome of life. Often, when people speak about love, they are actually confused and talking about intense physical desire that occurs at the beginning of a relationship - lust.
Aristotle said “The virtue is to be found between two vices, each of which involves either an excess or deficiency of the true virtue.” For example, were one to witness a robbery, the coward does not have enough courage and thus would do nothing. The foolhardy runs into danger regardless of the situation, whereas the person who holds the mean, in this case being the virtue of courage, will be the one to act in the most virtuous way.
The honeymoon is filled with infatuation, daydreaming and a strong desire to please the new beloved. Everything is new. There is intangible mystery and so much to share. Falling in love feels good. Two becoming one, feeling whole and complete in each other. Caught up in the glamour of the beloved’s radiance, one doesn’t ‘see’ the others faults, nor do they ‘see’ ours. One can be quite gullible regarding their perception of the other person. Skeletons, innermost fears, secrets and demons stay locked in the closet!
Let’s explore The Honeymoon phase. Rose-coloured glasses, accompanied by a strong
Discernment - authentic boundaries - what are they? Thinking our new beloved is the bees-knees, when in
reality we have actually brought home something the cat could have dragged in! At the same time, while caught up in your infatuation, your friends and family are all freaking out! To the shock of said friends and family, one may appear to do some really bizarre things, going to extraordinary lengths to please the new knight/damsel. In truth, it takes time to create enough trust for one another to reveal the deeper truths about themselves. As the trust grows, so too does the willingness to disclose and as this occurs, if met and reciprocated with love and acceptance, so intimacy deepens. Then we begin to notice differences. More next month, till then, enjoy your journey.

Discovering Ayurveda by Liesl Horne
Restoring Your Energy How we choose to restore our energy levels varies for each of us. What will replenish one person can deplete another, so you must recognise what works for you. All too often, we can get caught up in ‘doing’ and fail to notice our energy levels dropping, until we finally become exhausted. Just as your car would not run without the necessary fuel, the same applies to your energy reserves – don’t wait until you are running on empty to refuel. In Ayurveda, this relates to understanding your own ‘prakruti’ - your inherent nature - which guides you towards making supportive choices for your own mind/body constitution. Embracing who you are with all of your unique mental, physical and emotional qualities is fundamentally essential in Ayurveda. This can be further understood through the system of the doshas, details of which can be found in my previous columns. When we are feeling energised, this emanates outwards in our lives, nourishing those closest to us and in turn, further afield. Whether that is in our own families, or within our community, we will feel more

“Just as your car would not run without the necessary fuel, the same applies to your energy reserves - don’t wait until you are running on empty to refuel.” Taking a step in the right direction towards an activity that nourishes and inspires you, can lead to other opportunities for looking after your health and wellbeing. One way to do this is by creating a vision board, a tactile way to get in touch with what motivates and inspires you. Recently, I decided that I wanted to make more time for art, something I have always enjoyed. This one decision led to joining an art class and meeting a whole new group of people who
have generously taught me how to paint. What makes you feel emotionally nourished? Try creating a space in your home or in your garden that feels safe and calming, a place where you can peacefully meditate. Being outside in nature or in an area that soothes your emotions, to slow down take some deep breaths and feel grounded again. Tending to your special space can go a long way to lifting your spirits. Choose a favourite aromatherapy oil which is uplifting, such as lemon, mandarin or a therapeutic blend that you find appealing. Clear any clutter and surround yourself with the things that bring you a sense of joy. This includes being with people who support and encourage you emotionally and with who you can offer the same in return.
“Exploring new experiences is another way to help lift your spirits and cultivate your sense of adventure.” What types of food do you find nourish you? Following a seasonal diet that is suited to your constitution can be easier to follow if you plan
health health and & wellbeing ahead. Include a variety of herbs and spices for added flavour. Preparing your meals from the comfort of your kitchen is a great way to get creative with your food. Exploring new experiences is another way to help lift your spirits and cultivate your sense of adventure. Feeling mentally and physically invigorated through our five senses encourages new ideas, helping us to feel motivated towards change. Whether that be taking part in a physical sport, taking a brisk walk, or visiting a library full of interesting books, a gallery or exhibition, or even reading an article or
book that transports you to another place.
you may prefer to join a meditation group.
Sleeping and resting are high on the list of priorities when it comes to restoring our energy. Most of us need at least seven hours for our body to repair and replenish. A good night’s sleep has the power to lift our mood for the better.
Establish a regular bed time, aiming for 7-8 hours which is generally recommended. Begin to wind down at least an hour before you retire. Try an evening yoga routine to help you relax.
Consider these Ayurvedic tips for restoring your energy: Find a meditation practice that works with your daily routine. It may suit you to walk in nature or to enjoy a quiet place at home, or
Massage the soles of your feet with a quality massage oil such as sesame oil. This helps to calm the nervous system and promotes restful sleep. Keep a personal journal by your bed to note down your thoughts and clear your mind. Reflect on your day with a sense of gratitude.
Recipe - Restorative Date Milk This is a wonderfully soothing drink to help replenish your energy levels when they are low. Warm between 2-3 fresh dates, finely chopped with seeds removed, in a generous cup of almond milk or milk of choice. Once the dates have softened, either blend until smooth or drink as is, sprinkled with a little nutmeg and cinnamon.

ACF fights Adani Mining Company Mention the name Adani and some people will still return a blank look, unaware that the Government has passed bills allowing this huge, Indian based mining company, along with five other companies to mine in the Galilee Basin, Queensland. Straddling the Great Dividing Range, the Galilee Basin in central Queensland is home to one of the largest known coal reserves on the planet. Until now, this estimated 27 billion tonne cache has remained untapped but with mining permission granted, it spells disaster for the climate, local environment, farmlands and Great Barrier Reef, as well as the cultural heritage of the region’s traditional owners, the Wangan and Jagalingou People. Along with massive street protests in Brisbane, of which few are aware due to the dumbing down by the media, the Australia Conservation Foundation has brought this to public attention. They have won a Federal Court appealing against the assessment of Adani’s North Galilee Water Scheme, with the Federal Government conceding the case, admitting that it
failed to consider public submissions and even lost some submissions. ACF have also pressured global engineering firm GHD to rule out working with Adani. Other companies have followed suit which has rendered the project unviable but the Federal Government has stepped up allowing $4.4bn of effective subsidies to allow the project to go ahead. The only company still willing to support Adani is Siemens, which has promoted a huge backlash towards Siemens.

The Spirit of Things Choosing Pathways by Samantha Duly This month, I will be writing about choosing pathways. This is quite timely considering we have just entered into the New Year and even moreso as it is also the start of a new decade. To begin this topic, let us examine this time of year as a whole. Many of us make New Year’s resolutions that sometimes we do not keep. I wait until about the end of January or beginning of February to make decisions, to plan new ways and directions that I want to go in or implement. For example, I feel we can put too much pressure on ourselves when we are just ‘coming down’ from the festivities. Christmas and the holiday period, especially around this time of year can be fraught with many difficulties, including family issues, monetary and relationship problems. So, if you want to make positive changes and choose new pathways this
48
Supernal Magazine
year, be gentle on yourself and set yourself realistic goals/achievements.
“When we first embark on our spiritual journey, there are so many different aspects to our path.” When we first embark on our spiritual journey, there are so many different aspects to our path and not knowing which one to take can cause us confusion at times. Acquaintances, family and friends can give us ideas and suggestions, but really, we are the ones that need to decide where our path will take us. Sitting with yourself in contemplation is a good start and maybe writing down a few headings, such as my direction in life, my personal development, my spiritual development, how do I want to be of service to humanity? What are the qualities that I can personally offer? Writing notes is a great
start. Also, try just sitting in contemplation: this is your time and space to sit with your spirit and your soul. Before we even embark on this spiritual journey called life, we have to work on ‘self’ and be in a good place on all levels, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. How can we help others if we have not helped ourselves in the first instance? Some examples of choosing a pathway that is in line with your own personal spirituality and attributes and in keeping with my column they could be; meditation classes, yoga, spiritual healing including Reiki.
“How can we help others if we have not helped ourselves in the first instance?” It could also include trance healing, spiritual development, psychic development, mediumistic development - this can
mediumship consist of mental mediumship, trance mediumship, and physical mediumship. After many years of study, practice, patience and perseverance on any of the above subjects, you may be in a position to teach others. My pathway started firstly with studying Reiki gaining all three levels/certificates. In my second year of studying Reiki in 1999, I sat in a trance circle and a psychic development group with the late Robin Wimbow in Brighton, U.K. interestingly; I did not pursue trance mediumship. Mainly I feel it was because I did not want to ‘surrender’ my voice box to the spirit communicator. I had choked a few times, which scared me. I found my ‘pathway’ later that year, after joining the SNU Church (Spiritualists National Union) also in Brighton, and embarked on mediumship courses and practising platform mediumship. I knew this was for me and that I had found my ‘chosen pathway’ after firstly doing my Reiki studies, trance mediumship and the separate psychic classes. Through the Church, I then heard about the Arthur Findlay College in Stansted, Essex, London. The College offers many courses in psychic and mediumistic studies. I would say to anyone who is dedicated and committed to working for spirit, to at least experience one visit to the College as even being in the atmosphere will blow you
away. Another point to include is spiritual education which can consist of joining a reputable Spiritualist Church. At a Church/ Centre, especially if it’s run as an SNU Centre, there will be lots of discussions on education. The SNU also has an international section, namely the SNUi (Spiritualists National Union international). After joining the latter, there are classes to access via the web in a classroom setting. With regards to the SNU, which is based in the UK, upon joining you become a provisional member, then after a period of time, you become a full member. The Education side of the SNU offers many interesting online courses which you can purchase along with a tutor to assess and mark your essays. It’s a great start to one’s spiritual development on many levels, and you learn so much. To date, I have completed 118 essays and I am still learning! Good luck in choosing your pathway, but don’t forget it takes time! Yours in Spirit, Samantha Duly

February is the month of St Valentine, the heart and a box of chocolates. It’s the dark centre, the heart full of love and pierced with an arrow. It is up; it is down deep, powerful and vulnerable at the same time. It is lunar tone and lunar mind, polarised and decisively indecisive! Two little ducks are a pair; one is a lonely duck on the lookout for a mate. And yet, one of two can feel so alone if one is not in alignment with oneself. Two can make the story twice as hard to follow and the path too bumpy to stroll. When one turns into two, let that one make sure that it is to create something fabulous from two, such as three, four or more, not merely to try and make one better, happier or more than it already is. Two will gravitate, magnify, draw unto and repel at the same time. It’s the single cell splitting and the twin flame, the two-faced and thing one and thing two, but more than anything at all, it is the Mother. Divine feminine incarnate, the womb and the deep warmth of tender loving care.
Quote of the Month “Family violence is an entrenched epidemic that we’ve lived with since time began, so we’ve got a long way to go. But I do believe the tide is turned. It’s no longer a subject that only occurs behind closed doors.” - Rosie Batty Rosemary Anne ‘Rosie’ Batty, AO, was born in England (Laneham, Nottinghamshire) in 1962. A staunch campaigner against domestic violence, her journey started in 2014 after the death of her son Luke (11yo) who was murdered by his father. Rosie’s stance to make all people aware of hidden domestic violence in homes has been nothing short of amazing. Rosie received the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2019 and continues to stand up and work to support social change and awareness against all forms of domestic violence. 50

Tadd is a larrikin Aussie who’s a hard worker and a bit of a philosopher at heart. He loves spending time in the Australian bush and is quite comfortable driving around this big wide land he calls home.
Tadd’s interest in dreams comes as a result of an over active imagination where there are blurred lines between sleep dreaming and day dreaming. He started writing down his dreams and following them through to gain an understanding on how and why these dreams really are important messages from the soul. People will often find Tadd sitting on a mountain top or a sand dune reflecting on life as he knows it, and as the world lives it!
