This year marks the Club’s 75th anniversary of it’s creation. Back on 05th April 1946 the Mayor of Southport, Alderman JW Proud, chaired a gathering of local supporters and representatives form Royal Queensland Yacht Club to discuss the options for a Yacht Club forming on the Gold Coast.

On 26th April 1946, Southport Yacht Club Inc. was officially formed. The first directions were to improve boating facilities, build a new jetty in the basin and erect decent beacons to assist in navigation, open & deepen channels.

Now, 75 years later, SYC are continuing to match these directives. We are always looking to improve facilities, and now offer four locations around the Gold Coast, we are again building a new jetty in the form of a Megayacht Berthing facility, and what seems to be an ever present comment, we continue to facilite the deepening of the channels.

So much dedication, drive, and passion, has gone into the growth and development of the Club. Our Members have always been the motivating force behind implementing

new directions, and first to offer assistance, knowledge, and hard work to achieve their dreams for their Club. From our little shed with an old BBQ by the side of the Broadwater, to what you see at Main Beach now has been thanks to our Membership base.

Now, in 2021 we have locations at Main Beach, Hollywell, Oxenford, and of course Dux at South Stradbroke Island.

- We offer sailing from Fun Sail for the novice, through to High Performance & Olympic development and training site.

- We have Power Boat options for cruising or the more competitive, Log Nav. - We have food and beverage facilities for those that enjoy being by the water, and sociallising in the Club.

- We have an extensive marina with over 300 berths and a Mega Yacht Berth in progress.

- We have an island retreat, with beautiful Bali hutt, pontoon, and caretakers who have made it look stunning.

- We have Members who love their Club, and an amazing Team who are passionate

I don’t know how you couldn’t find something to enjoy about being a part of Southport Yacht Club!

The Megayacht Berth is on track to for opening around the middle of this year.

You will notice a lot of progress can now be seen on the site, or from the water.

It’s been educational to say the least to be a part of this entire process, and I hope as Members we are all very proud of what we have achieved, and are aiming to achieve, 75yrs in and beyond.

I’d like to thank our entire Team at SYC, every day you make the Club a special place for our Members to enjoy everything that we offer. I’d also like to thank our Board of Directors, and hard working Committee Members for volunteering their time and knowledge to their Club, and of course our Members for their continued patronage across all aspects of SYC.

Hello again, What a magnificent start to our 75th Anniversary year; Sail Paradise had the largest fleet since Past Commodore Rob Mundle and friends started the event.

The comments I received from many competitors were overwhelmingly positive, with most looking forward to next year. It seems hard to believe that our Club is in such an excellent position financially and materially despite the disastrous past year.

The Megayacht Berth is nearing completion, and we have some fantastic vessels ready to take advantage of our incredible facility, so keep an eye out once it is commissioned.

I don’t think I need to mention how good the Commodores Cocktail Party was because most of you were there. I believe this is a significant resurgence of our Club’s pride, with large numbers attending the birthday nights, and all of our Club functions are booking out in a short time.

Dux Birthday is still a month away, and bookings are already substantial, so don’t delay as the ferries we have for this year limited their numbers due to the dreaded Covid.

To wind up, I must thank everyone for your Sadly, it would seem that ANZAC Day is support and friendship, which is making in doubt for this year, but we are going my term as Commodore enjoyable and ahead with our preparations for the Marine rewarding Honour Guard. Therefore we will be ready if the restrictions lift. Please support Ken Tregeagle this tribute by entering your boat. The Commodore registration forms are available at the Club, there is no cost, and you will be notified of any changes we have to make in advance.

The 75th Anniversary Ball is set for the 10th of April, so dust off your 1940’s clothes, practice your swing dancing, and we will see you there. Our Assistant GM Katie and her fabulous crew are going all out to put on a Ball to remember.

What a holiday season the Club has had.

Bartercard Sail Paradise saw the largest fleet in history, with 54 Yachts racing over four days. When you look at skippers, crew and family, it was well over 3,000 guests visiting the Club and the Gold Coast. This event is not possible without the sponsors, volunteers, and competitors, so thank you all very much. The Sail Paradise committee has already started working on next years event with interest in both sponsorship and competitors already coming through. Surf to City also saw significant numbers, and congratulations must go to Simon and the Sailing team for running two great events.

Powerboat cruising is proving to be very popular through the summer months.

Cruises are capped at 25 boats and have been booking out well in advance.

Events are starting to get back to normal with Russell Morris playing on the Members day. Once again, an incredible event with over 400 members enjoying the entertainment and food. The next Members Day is on the 19th of June, which I have just booked another great band so stay tuned!!! I know I sound like a broken record when I say, “please book early” I currently have a waiting list of 50 people for the Black Sorrows, so I’m looking at booking another date.

The Club has seen record numbers for Splice the Main Brace, Commodores Drinks and Monthly Birthday Nights. It’s great to see these nights pumping, and with membership growing, we have had to think outside the square to fit everyone in.

Katie has done a fantastic job in relation to making the Club look great. All the furniture and greenery have been all her idea, so make sure you say thank you.

The restaurant has never been so busy, the food has been great, and the service is coping with the influx of members and guests. As we all know we want this Club to be the best it can and we never stop working on all areas of the Club, especially the Restaurant.

The Megayacht Berth is still in construction and still on track for finishing in April/May. The Marina Office has had much interest, and I’m looking forward to seeing a 100m vessel next to the Club.

The last few months have been hectic and stressful for all staff. I want to thank all staff for their hard work and dedication over this period.

A new year has begun, and we all hope that this year will be better than 2020, especially as this is the 75th anniversary of SYC. I hope everyone enjoyed a great Christmas and new year with family and friends.

The Southport Yacht Club was extremely fortunate to conduct our annual Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta in early January as many sailing regattas were cancelled, including the Sydney to Hobart.

Perhaps due to these cancellations, we had the biggest number of entries ever, a great fleet of 54. 12 IRC yachts entered, and a very competitive fleet it was. Unfortunately, Team Hollywood had to withdraw due to mechanical issues.

The event was sailed in variable conditions, with the final day being the toughest with 20-25 kt breeze filling in.

In IRC Crankster, from RQ finished first and also took out the prize, a surfboard for the overall Bartercard Sail Paradise Champion.

In PHS div 1, the winner was SYC boat Envy, skippered by Noel Hardy.

In PHS div 2, again, local boat Easy Day, skippered by Melbourne owner David Stoopman was the winner.

Christina, skippered by Scott Jones, was first in the Cruising division.

Bumblebee V, a former Sydney to Hobart winner in 2001, was first in non-spinnaker.

The event was an excellent showcase for our Club, with all participants commenting on the great atmosphere, friendliness and professionalism of the Regatta.

Many thanks must go to the Sailing staff, the Clubhouse staff, the Volunteers and the Management for the smooth and

professional manner in which this event was conducted.

SYC also ensured, by employing Nick Douglas, we had great commentary, marketing and photos through her site Adventures of a Sailor Girl. Many thanks for a great job.

The Sailing season has restarted with a vengeance, with all divisions having increased entries. Thursday Twilight has 20 plus entries every week. We welcome new boats, Baby Aramex, Fusion, Wild Spirit and Ella to the fleet. These boats provide an incredible sight on the Broadwater, with many members commenting on the spectacle they present every week.

Wednesday racing at Hollywell venue has seen up to 30 entries racing around Crab Island followed by friendly presentations at the clubhouse ashore.

Our offshore racing fleet has also increased in number, but more importantly, in quality.

A new entry to the offshore fleet is Hotseat, owned and skippered by Cathy Levings. A magnificent looking race boat. We wish her well.

Again we have the best volunteers of any Club, and we applaud them for the time they donate to the Club, which is a great cost-saving to us.

A full calendar of racing continues to the end of the season together with all the special events, Cat Weekend, The Great Race, Two-Handed Race, Dinghy Trophy Marathon Race, Julian Rocks Race, Ladies Day Race, to name a few.

It has also just been announced that our Julian Rocks Race, held in March, is a qualifying race for QCYC’s Brisbane to Gladstone race 2021 to be held at Easter.

Oxenford venue hosted the annual Discover Sailing Day. Volunteers and staff introduced over 400 people to our great sport during the day, with many participants booking lessons to learn more about sailing.

Activities at Oxenford are also back in full swing.

Finally, the construction of the Megayacht Berth is proceeding smoothly.

We had many entries from SYC in the Surf to City race. A great effort was made by Steve Furlong and crew on Sasskia II to finish 2nd in the inshore race. Congratulations!

The dingy and cat fleets are also enjoying record numbers.

What a start we have had to 2021!

We have been so lucky being able to enjoy our wonderful sport of sailing since July 2020, unlike so many clubs in the southern states. Our hearts and sincere thoughts go out to them all and we wish them a speedy recovery to this Covid19 Pandemic.

Couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Suffice to say we continue to be so proud of our wonderful Yacht Club and you our members. We cannot rest on our laurels as there are always lessons to be learned so as we can continue to further improve ourselves, however it is certainly Just before we experienced our huge encouraging when 98% of the feedback Covid19 lock down with our neighbouring was this positive and rewarding.

This will continue to happen with PHS ratings as the continual changing of the fleet, their participation in the series etc etc all effects overall PHS ratings.

If Skippers and crews want to be able to measure their true performance then the only answer is a constant measurement system such as IRC, ORCi, ORC Club etc.

This is why our Off The Beach Boats (Dinghies & Catamarans) have a Yardstick system for a true comparison of mixed fleet racing which allows the sailors to really assess their “performance”.

Our Offshore and Thursday Twilight fleets have grown with the skippers and crews becoming more experienced from more racing and are clearly yearning for “performance encouragement”. The only option to yield this is to adopt a constant, cost effective, measurement system such as Australians Sailing’s ORC Club.

Next seasons sailing calendar for our 2021/2022 is nearing completion by the Sailing Committee and I encourage you all to speak with your Sailing Committee Divisional Representative.

Special Regulations: Three new amendments have been added to the Australian Sailing Special Regulations, two of which were effective in December 2020.

Amendment 7, Multihull Lifelines and Tethers changes the requirement for multihull crew to be wearing a safety harness and be clipped on at all times in category 1, 2 and 3 races.

Amendment 8 allowing the use of watermakers to provide the water for crews in category 1 and 2 races. Amendment 9, Keel and Rudder Inspections will come into effect with the new version of the Special Regulations on 1 July 2021.

This amendment brings Australian Sailing into line with World Sailing and their amendment to the Offshore Special Regulations to include keel and rudder inspection for Categories 1 -3.

Summer is here and with that comes a new year and spectacular days on the water. It is particularly pleasing to see the offshore fleet growing to 14 boats across two division especially given how difficult 2020 was.

Big welcome to Cath and Dave’s new boat ‘Hot Seat’, Pogo 12.5metres, we couldn’t miss you with the bright red wrap!

Summer Round the Cans Series has started and after 7 races Aramex leads Division 1, followed by Blunderbuss and Cyclone. In Division 2 Knot Another Painkiller leads with Fourlove in second and Pole Dancer in third place.

Summer Passage Series has also started, in Division 1 Indulgence has the lead followed by Kerisma and Aramex.

KD Girl is leading Division 2 followed by Knot Another Painkiller and No Secrets.

Sadly, the Cook Island race was postponed due to adverse weather conditions in December and we hope to run it before the season ends on 30th April. Sail Paradise saw a record number of boats participate for 4 days racing as

the first major regatta of 2021. It was wonderful to see so many local boats and from RQYS participating, congratulations to all skippers, crews, race officers, volunteers and hospitality staff who make this event so enjoyable!

Surf to City was another challenge with the forecast rather unpredictable. Congratulations to all SYC boats who competed including Saskia II, Mischief, Steeplejack, Maritimo, Black Diamond and Hot Seat.

There is still a lot sailing to see out the end of the season, 30th April and I look forward to seeing as many boats as possible out enjoying the water.

Hello Fellow Yachters, The recent Southport Yacht Club SKUD 18 Championships held as part of the Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta was a resounding success. Thanks must go to the organisers, staff and especially the volunteers. Sailing offshore in a variety of conditions tested the skill of the skippers and crews of the 6 SKUDs competing and their stamina. It was comforting for all to have the volunteers in their RIBS, always keeping a watchful eye, especially when going through the Seaway. Thanks again to Michael McGehan, Peter Board and all the support crews for looking out for us.

The Skud 18 teams showed themselves more than capable of competing with able-bodied sailors, racing in the trailable division. The Skuds were always close, winning and placing in several races. The Southport Yacht Club Skud 18

Championship was won by RETOX skippered by Neil Rowsthorn, teamed up with regular crew Jack Wallace, narrowly edging out Full Muppet Racing.

Com skippered by Townsville girl Chelseanne Osborne who teamed up with local girl Mel Watson.

QPSA work closely with Sailability Gold Coast, and sailors of any ability can be trained from novice, sailing in the Hansa 303 to racing in the Skud 18.

The QPSA welcomes new sailor Paul Bird, Paul from Tasmania, who will sail Full Muppet Racing, no doubt enjoy the Ross Manning year-round sailing Southport offers. This means all 6 QPSA Skuds will now sail regularly from Hollywell in the Inshore Division, boosting the fleet numbers considerably.

Having all 6 Skuds craned into the water, rigged, and skippers hoisted aboard is no mean feat. To avoid inconveniencing other racers, QPSA sailors and a small support group typically start at the Club from 1.00 pm and clear the jetty by 3.00 for a 4.30 Start.

Sailability Gold Coast continues to receive our volunteers’ incredible support who returned on the 12th of January to a training day. Volunteers went over our equipment and safety procedures, ready for another year of taking people with disabilities sailing. After the break on the 19th of January, clients joined us again with many excited faces happy to return to sailing in summer on the GC. The second week of Sailability fell on Australia Day. We decided to make a social day of the national holiday for the few clients and many volunteers that could attend.

We kicked off 2021 with a bang, with our biggest and best Sail Paradise Regatta to date! It was incredible to be part of this event, and thank you to each and every one of the competitors that made this such a wonderful Regatta.

Thank you also to all of the competitors that provided valuable feedback to the Sailing Office on their experience so that we can continue to make this event bigger and better next year. The dates for the 2022 Sail Paradise Regatta have now been set, and next year it will take place from the 3rd – 6th January, so be sure to pop these dates in the diary!

We are now in the last quarter of the Club Racing calendar for the 2020/2021 period. In conjunction with the Sailing Office, your Divisional Reps have been hard at work reviewing the sailing calendar for the 2021/2022 season.

All of our Divisions continue to go from

strength to strength, with consistently strong numbers across all Club Racing events. Welcome to all of the new sailors that have joined us recently, particularly those that have joined us as Sail Pass participants and have then moved on to become members of the Club.

For those Bailment holders with their boats in storage at Hollywell, please be reminded that you will shortly be receiving your renewal documents for the next 12 month Bailment period. Please keep an eye out for this documentation. A new Bailment Agreement will need to be signed, and if your insurance documents have been renewed recently, please remember to provide a copy of these documents to the Sailing Office.

6th March – Evolution Sails Two Handed Race 7th March – Dinghy Marathon Trophy Race 20th March – Julian Rocks Yacht Race 10th April – Telemachus Jewellery Ladies Day Race.

For the Offshore Division Fleet, the Cook Island Yacht Race will be rescheduled; however, the new dates for this race have not yet been confirmed. A notification regarding these new dates will go out very soon. The next Offshore Divisional Meeting has been scheduled for 7 pm, Main Beach on Tuesday 9th March. All Offshore Division sailors are invited to attend and have input into this meeting.

My Boat Bill Clayton

My BOAT is intended to give members some insight or information about other members “pride and joy”.

This article, however, is about a boat that had 60 owners, was designed in New Zealand but very nearly didn’t get built because the designer would only allow a select boat builder to use his plans and that boat builder was “who knows where” in Australia. Turns out he was working at the Southport Yacht Club.

• A boat that was built in less than three months, went to Hawaii to compete in the Pan-Am Clipper series with only a couple of sea trials conducted by sailing to Sydney.

• A boat crewed by members who had to pay their way to Hawaii as well as $1000 to become an owner.

• A boat, which against all odds won line honours and division honours in all 5 events in the 1980 PanAm Clipper race in Hawaii.

• A boat, that attracted so much attention, Mr Joe Bjelke Petersen, Queensland Premier held a State reception in Brisbane and a Mayor Keith Hunt held a Civic reception on the Gold Coast • A boat, that was financed by “chook raffles” and Art Union.

I am talking, of course, about the Gold Coast Express. The story starts in 1980 during a conversation between two members over a couple of beers. As most good stories do.

Member John Swan, a travel agent came up with the “crazy idea” of getting a boat and entering it in the Pan Am Clipper Cup in Honolulu.

John approached Mal Wood and they decided to fly to the USA to charter a suitable boat to enter in the Series, but they had no success and ended up deciding to build a boat in Australia.

Renowned designer, Laurie Davidson was not convinced that he should entrust his design to either an incompetent boat builder or a poor bunch of sailors. He nominated three boat builders that he would entrust his design. All three were New Zealanders and two were booked out for months, and the third had gone “walkabout in Australia”. By a stroke of good luck, John and Mal happened to know that he was working at the Southport Yacht Club at the time.

Mal Wood also managed to convince Laurie that we had a great pool of talented sailors at Southport Yacht Club.

A workshop was arranged, tools borrowed, and work commenced.

The hull was built of moulded ply with a final sheath of fibreglass cloth. The hull was built upside down with light stringers laid from stem to stern to form the shape.

The skin consisted of three layers of one,eighth ply (4mm) with strips of ply 10inch wide fixed to the stringers from gunwale to gunwale, diagonal to the keel.

This method of construction is extraordinarily strong and lightweight.

The Gold Coast Express measured 37 feet overall (11mtrs), a beam of 11ft 9 inches (3.5 metres), a single mast of 54 feet (16.5mtrs) Other SYC members who were actively involved in the project were Jim Inglis and Mayor Dennis Pie. Another enthusiast was Don Stead, who was later editor of “The Broadsheet” the then SYC Magazine. In April 1980 Don wrote: “The Gold Coast Express is an ocean racing yacht rated in the one-ton class. It is being built to compete in the Pan Am Clipper Cup in Honolulu in August this year. A group of enthusiastic club yachties are working like mad to ensure that the boat is launched on 19th April. The cost of construction is being met by selling share units of $1,000 each. The boat will be crewed by members who are shareholders and who will meet all their expenses.”

Several methods of fund-raising were instituted. A popular method involved regular “chook raffles” on the SYC premises. Mal Wood recalls some club wags dubbed the Gold Coast Express the “chook boat” because it was partly financed by such raffles. But the major fund-raising project was the Southport Yacht Club Pan Am Clipper Cup Art Union.

Funds raised would help meet the cost of shipping Gold Coast Express to Hawaii and getting her back home. Tickets were $1. The prize was a return trip for two to Honolulu from August 1st - 17th, donated

by John Swan. This included entry to all - Autumn edition 2021

official yacht club functions throughout the race series.

Don Stead said, “This is an exciting effort by a small group of club members to have the Southport Yacht Club make a serious challenge in a major international competition. It will help the club become a well-known name among the international yachting fraternity.”

In May 1980 Commodore Phon Blondell stated: “I would like to request members to back my old mate Alick Rose with the Gold Coast Express Art Union. Alick is 84 but has more go in him than I have. He has initiated the Art Union and worked like the devil to get the books out to ticket sellers.

He is living eating and sleeping with the Art Union on his mind continually.”

In 1980, Alick’s hard work for the Gold Coast Express Art Union was successful and $6,000 was raised. On May 5th, 1980 the Gold Coast Express was launched at the Southport Yacht Club. The yacht was christened by the widow of Lindsay Firth, SYC’s first Commodore.

In June 1980 the vessel was sailed to Sydney for her trials before being shipped to Honolulu. On July 26th, the yacht’s crew arrived in Hawaii. They were Jim Inglis (skipper), Mal Wood, Bert and Brian Sherring, Richard Gregory, Alan Saunders (Flash), Tommy Baker and Bob Fraser (Sailmaker). Veteran sailor Albie Bergin joined the team as navigator. Albie was later honoured by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia by being named Ocean Racing Veteran of the year.

Poor “Flash” never got to crew, as just before the first race, he mistook a guard rail for a fence and launched himself into “space” resulting in a broken arm.

He took over media duties and gained hugely successful coverage for Gold Coast Express and the Gold Coast.

Back in Southport, club members went wild with joy when the Gold Coast Express made a clean sweep, winning all five races and taking line honours in her Division. It was indeed a famous victory - five starts for 10 wins.

On August 27th, 1980 club members turned out in force to welcome home the victorious crew. Next day the crew received a well-deserved civic reception from Gold Coast Mayor Keith Hunt.

In October, the Member for Southport in State Parliament, Peter White, paid tribute to the achievements of the Gold Coast Express. In Parliament, he said: “It is a remarkable feat because 12 months ago some members of the Southport Yacht Club got together to design and build a boat to go to Hawaii and win. They showed the spirit of private enterprise. It involved getting people off their tails, raising the money, building the boat, having a go - and winning!”

On October 24th, 1980 the Gold Coast Express received the ultimate accolade.

by Queensland Premier, Mr (later Sir) Joh Bjelke-Petersen at Parliament House, Brisbane. The amount of national and international publicity the project gained for the Gold Coast and the Southport Yacht Club was immense,

The 1982 Pan Am Clipper Cup was again contested by the Gold Coast Express. But its victory was not to be repeated. A report by skipper Mal Wood from the deck of Gold Coast Express said: “Ten days before the series started, hurricane John caused winds of 110 mph south of the big island of Hawaii, with 20 - 30 ft seas. Three hurricanes in three weeks kept conditions heavy for a light displacement 37ft yacht. Only one yacht in the series was smaller than the Gold Coast Express. This Japanese yacht did not survive the first triangle and was the first of a line of broken masts during the series.”

Mal reported on Race Three - 150 miles Molokai-Maui and return: “After the race had been postponed for 24 hours the fleet got underway in 20-25 knot winds. The seas in the Molokai channel were 12-16ft high.

Daybreak saw us heading homeward under spinnaker and full main. Surfing down 10ft seas saw the complete rig disappear over the port bow. The runner block exploded, letting the runner stay loose and the wind and sea did the rest. With our mast broken in two pieces, one hanging over the side and only above the deck we looked an “sorry” sight.

Gold Coast Express

“We managed to get the mast to the surface, retrieve the spinnaker and haul the mess aboard. We got back to Honolulu under power. The yacht was completely derigged and examined but the repair was not possible. This put us out of the rest of the series. It was disappointing for the crew who had given 12 months in preparation for the event.”

So, what happened to Gold Coast Express; • In February 1983, according to reports, she was sold to Barclay Wade of Sydney and was renamed Middle Harbour Express.

• Successfully competed in the Sydney Hobart Yacht race in 1986/1987/1988 and 1989 with podium finishes in her class three times.

• According to recent reports she has been spotted at Lake Macquarie and Pittwater and is still competing in club events.

Would be great to try and put another syndicate together and bring her back to the Gold Coast, wouldn’t it???

The Oxenford Watersports Centre has settled into the new year well. Recently hosting our annual Discover Sailing day which was postponed last year due to COVID-19. 366 participants came from 34 different suburbs and enjoyed a day out on the water. We want to extend our thanks to the staff and volunteers who worked on the day putting in nearly 200 hours combined. Further to Australia Sailing and Councillor William Owen Jones for their support with the event. There are 3 key reasons as to why we run the event.

1. Increase awareness of the sport of sailing 2. Grow membership within the Club 3. Feed new participants into learn to sail courses at SYC

The event encouraged strong registration numbers in our courses, with the Tackers 1 learn to sail class having a record number of participants as well as our Start Dinghy adult course. During February and March our quietest Saturday will have 60 on water participants and largest will have over 110 participants a great number of people for our Club.

Over the last few months, we have seen our Volunteers putting their hands up to help in so many aspects, from Skippers, crewing on our support ribs, cooking & serving the BBQs, and offering concierge support reception for Sail Paradise Sailors.

A total of 1,380 hours over three months (466 hours dedicated to Sail Paradise alone). I am sure you all would agree on a HUGE effort by every one of our Volunteers. Southport Yacht Club would like to thank every Volunteer for their unwavering support and professionalism. It’s through your efforts we continue to strive with our events.

SYC’s Open Day at Oxenford was a great success, and we would like to thank our Volunteers who manned the BBQ and raised $340.00 – it was a welcome sausage sizzle for the kids and adults alike after their sailing experience on the lake.

We have prepared several training exercises both theory and hands-on instruction, in the coming months to ensure all our Volunteers’ ongoing training. This training, completed in their own time, is to up their knowledge and support our sailors both on and off the water.

May 17th to 21st is an important time for our Volunteer’s as it is the

National Volunteers Week and a time to celebrate all the volunteers who consistently provide support to Southport Yacht Club. We would love it if you could send in some of your favourite experiences shared with our volunteers to go to our little Hall of Fame. Please send any of your stories, and your photo’s to volunteers@sycgc.com.au Please do not forget, should you ever have any time or know of someone who may enjoy the benefits of Volunteering, please feel free to pass on my telephone number (0475 434 800) as we are always on the lookout for new volunteers who would like to join a great group of people.

The Powerboat Committee has decided to hold regular information evenings beginning at the end of March. The idea is to have a wide range of subjects offered every couple of months.

Speakers will be local experts or members of the committee. I will start the ball rolling with an introductory navigation session, suiting those with little or no knowledge in this area. If you are interested, the details will appear on the website & in the regular news on email.

The Round Crab Island Trophy is next on February 27 & the Buck Jones Memorial is on March 20. There are a further four events after Easter finishing with the SYC Open in early June. If you are interested in having a go, contact me through the Club.

The navigation calendar is usually quiet over the festive Peter Brown season, but it has been especially quiet this season because of VC Power the postponement of the Vice Commodore’s Trophy in early December. We were down to five starters & the weather forecast was quite unpleasant. The event will be held now, on May 22 and will be still the final event in the Dux Series.

On February 6, the season continued with the Chairman’s Trophy.

CRUISER XMAS PARTY

The Christmas Party was held in the Compass Room at SYC Main Beach on Sunday 29th November 2020. John Hall and Les Loynes organised the event and what a good job they did, although it was a shame that John and his wife Sue were unable to attend the event due to family commitments. The Commodore and Vice Commodore Power and their wives attended as our guests, along with 61 Cruisers and their partners. Zoi from the SYC Associates Committee also attended and was able sell raffle tickets for their Mega Draw.

A wonderful visual presentation or montage showing videos and photographs from of our recent cruises was put together by Candis Coppinger. Some members were spellbound by display on the big screen. A very special thank you to Candis for all her hard work in creating the show!

After a welcome drink at the bar, we were treated to an excellent meal consisting of an alternate drop entrée of either an Asian inspired prawn salad or an excellent slow cooked pork belly. This was followed by an alternate drop main course of either grilled salmon or turkey with ham and seasoning. The portions were “man” sized and everyone was very pleased with their meals.

Nick Halsey spoke very briefly during the luncheon, thanking those for their support during the year, in particular thanking BMS, who has sponsored the Cruising division during the year. SYC was also thanked for their management during this difficult year.

The Chef had prepared a cake for dessert to celebrate the upcoming 90th birthday of one of our cruising members, it was a complete surprise to Richard Purvis-Smith to be called upon to cut his birthday cake! There was enough cake left over for people to take some home in little boxes provided by the kitchen staff.

DAYS GUTTER CRUISE REPORT

Registrations for this cruise reached twenty-five, however, a number of cancellations were received and only 18 made it to Myora. Our first night was at RQYS Canaipa Point with a briefing ashore followed by a BYO BBQ. The following day the fleet proceeded to Myora anchorage where some people opted to visit Dunwich and the Little Ship Club.

Our cruise leader, Andy Day, had issued every skipper a list of all the boats, breaking the fleet into two groups. Both leaders had previous tracks through the tricky entrance into Days Gutter. Departing Myora very early, the groups made way via the Rainbow Channel, then abeam of Amity Point, the fleet proceeded through the top of the Rous Channel, then into Black Gutter. All boats successfully navigated the passage anchoring in front of Kooringal. After a short rest, the fleet met ashore at The Gutter Bar for a seafood lunch. Most people shared their dinghies for the trip ashore, and anchored together, allowing the dinghies to be moved out as the tide fell and avoiding the issues of stranded dinghies that occurred last November.

The following morning most of the boats took part in a dinghy safari to the Blue Hole anchorage, returning via the Moreton Bay side of the island that forms Days Gutter. The trip took two hours and everyone enjoyed the many sightings of stingrays, shovelnose sharks and turtles, which abound in the clear shallow waters.

At low tide later in afternoon, cruisers gathered ashore for BYO drinks and nibbles.

A random numbers drawer was held where six lucky people won $50 Club Cash prizes provided by our sponsor BMS. The following morning, the flotilla exited Days Gutter in two groups, planing hulls in the first group and displacement hulls in the second group. Our plan to stop at Blaksleys Anchorage was changed due to the wind turning fresh from NNE. Instead the fleet anchored in Tiger Mullet Channel after a 3.5hr trip south with a good tide all the way.

The flotilla moved on to Dux the next day to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Some crews visited Tipplers Café for lunch and many met for a BBQ ashore later in the day.

AUSTRALIA DAY CRUISE REPORT For the second time the committee had to close entries for the cruise at 25 boats. They had found that on the Days Gutter cruise in November 2020 it was difficult to seat more than 50 people at places like RQYS Canaipa for BBQ dinner, it is also easier to encourage people to abide by the Covid-19 rules and spread people apart. Furthermore, gatherings of over 50 people in public places bring other regulatory rules into play. 25 boats registered for the cruise, however, our Membership Coordinator Kellie Foster had created a “wait list” which had 6 boats on it before we left.

All wait listed boats were offered a place on the cruise, as others had withdrawn.

There were a total of 40 people on 21 boats on the first evening of the cruise which began at RQYS Canaipa Point.

Several new members to the group were welcomed and re-acquainted with those less frequent cruisers.

On Friday, the fleet proceeded to Horseshoe Bay on Peel Island for the overnight anchorage, where there was plenty of room for all our boats. Luckily, it was high water making dinghy access very easy to the beach as cruisers met ashore for drinks and nibbles. By now the flotilla numbers had increased to 23.

The majority voted to stay in Horseshoe Bay in lieu of moving to Myora the following day as planned. Unfortunately, Horseshoe Bay is the closest to point to many Brisbane suburbs and the constant stream of tinnies and jet skis passing the anchored boats in excess of 6 knots made the Bay animated and noisy at times.

Fortunately, this traffic dissipates at night.

On Sunday the fleet relocated to Blaksley Anchorage on North Stradbroke Island.

As this is a popular camp ground it provides a welcome chance for visiting boaties to get rid of accumulated rubbish in the camp ground bins.

This bay is also popular, but was large enough to accommodate the fleet.

Our plans for Monday were a little disrupted by a dredging contractor operating opposite VMR Jacobs Well.

There were reports of boats hitting the dredge line, or going aground while trying to miss the barge. The committee elected to proceed south via Canaipa Passage however, some boats successfully negotiated Main Channel and the

dredge. 25 people attended lunch at the Jacobs Well Tavern before proceeding to Dux for overnight anchorage.

Australia Day celebrations commenced at 12 noon with most of the attendants dressing in theme. The “A” frame tables were decorated with blue and red tablecloths with Bunting flags hung for the occasion. Our numbers swelled to 58 people. After lunch, most people competed in traditional games, whilst the spectators provided encouragement. The Egg Spoon race caused much laughter, while Toss the Thong brought out different techniques.

Quoits proved to be challenging, whilst rolling the 10 kg Pumpkin became strenuous. After a short break, participants organised themselves into teams, for an Australiana themed trivia quiz.

The last event of the day was the random number drawer sponsored

by BMS, for those who had registered for the cruise and were present at the draw. 24 members entered the draw, with six lucky people winning $50 each of SYC Club cash. We would like to thank BMS for their continued support.

Registrations for this cruise reached twenty-five, however, a number of cancellations were received and only 18 made it to Myora. Our first night was at RQYS Canaipa Point with a briefing ashore followed by a BYO BBQ. The following day the fleet proceeded to Myora anchorage where some people opted to visit Dunwich and the Little Ship Club.

Our cruise leader, Andy Day, had issued every skipper a list of all the boats, breaking the fleet into two groups. Both leaders had previous tracks through the tricky entrance into Days Gutter.

Departing Myora very early, the groups made way via the Rainbow Channel, then abeam of Amity Point, the fleet proceeded through the top of the Rous Channel, then into Black Gutter. All boats successfully navigated the passage anchoring in front of Kooringal. After a short rest, the fleet met ashore at The Gutter Bar for a seafood lunch. Most people shared their dinghies for the trip ashore, and anchored together, allowing the dinghies to be moved out as the tide fell and avoiding the issues of stranded dinghies that occurred last November.

The following morning most of the Southport Yacht Club

boats took part in a dinghy safari to the Blue Hole anchorage, returning via the Moreton Bay side of the island that forms Days Gutter. The trip took two hours and everyone enjoyed the many sightings of stingrays, shovelnose sharks and turtles, which abound in the clear shallow waters.

At low tide later in afternoon, cruisers gathered ashore for BYO drinks and nibbles. A random numbers drawer was held where six lucky people won $50 club cash prizes provided by our sponsor BMS. The following morning, the flotilla exited Days Gutter in two groups, planing hulls in the first group and displacement hulls in the second group. Our plan to stop at Blaksleys Anchorage was changed due to the wind turning fresh from NNE. Instead the fleet anchored in Tiger Mullet Channel after a 3.5hr trip south with a good tide all the way.

The flotilla moved on to Dux the next day to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Some crews visited Tipplers Café for lunch and many met for a BBQ ashore later in the day.

The last game of year 2020 was played at Parkwood Golf Club on Monday 30th November. Once again it was a full field of twenty eight and the weather was pleasant. They provided us with a private air conditioned room for lunch and presentation afterwards and the food was first class. The winner was Peter Whitehead with 61 points, just beating Rose Turner on count back.

The annual Christmas dinner was held the following evening in the Compass Room at the SYC. Forty three attended and it was a great night.

The Commodores trophy was presented by Commodore Ken Tregeagle to joint winners, Rose Turner and Terry Stephenson.

Their score of 175 is the sum of their best three games played during the year.

Normally it is the sum of the best six games.

In 2020 we only played a total of five games.

Our first game of the new year was at Surfers Paradise Golf Club on 8th February. It was a cloudy day with the threat of rain.

Nothing eventuated though and the winner was Ken Crawford with 62 points.

75 CELEBRATING

Years

Welcome to 2021. With the past year behind us, let’s hope for a better year of events this year.

This year is the 75th Anniversary of our Club so there will be many exciting things to come.

The Associate’s Committee finished last year with the drawing of our Mega Raffle at the Carols On The Broadwater evening.

It was a jam-packed night, and the tickets sold very well. Our first prize of the kayak went to Richard Vanderwick. I hope you gave it a lot of use over the Christmas break.

Our first function for this year is our Fashion Luncheon. It is on February the 26th, so it would have been held before this issue of In SYnC. At the time of writing this, the ticket sales are looking like a full house.

Don’t forget Dux Birthday on March the 28th. The Associates will have a raffle, and the first prize for this is an Inflatable kayak.

The next significant function is the 75th Gala Ball on April the 10th. As this is an exceptional year, the Club is organising it with many surprises and a night to remember. The Associates have secured a diamond pendant for an auction with an approximate retail value of $5000. So be prepared with your wallets.

We have gained two new sponsors this year. THE STANDARD MARKET COMPANY and SEAFOOD DIRECT. Vouchers for these sponsors will be added to our weekly raffles.

Shepherd’s Pie Meat Filling • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 large onion, diced.

• 3 garlic cloves, minced.

• 2 large carrots peeled and diced.

• 2 celery stalks, diced.

• 700grm minced lamb, or beef • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 cup chicken stock, or if using ground beef use beef stock.

• 1 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary finely chopped.

• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme finely chopped.

• 1 cup frozen peas

Potato Topping • 900grms Colliban or Desiree potatoes, peeled & quartered.

• 1/2 cup milk • 1/4 cup butter • Salt and pepper, to taste.

Method Pre heat the oven to 200° In a large oven-safe pan, heat the oil on medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for a minute. Then add the diced carrots, diced celery, and lamb. Cook for 8-10 minutes or until the meat is browned. Use your spatula to break up the meat while cooking.

Place the potatoes in a pot on the stove and cover with cold water. Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. Cook for 13-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft when pierced with a fork.

Drain the potatoes in a colander, then return to the pot. Add the milk, butter, salt and pepper and mash until creamy.

Drain the fat from the pan and add the broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes, until the sauce is slightly thickened.

Add the frozen peas and stir together. Turn off the stove and use the back of your spatula to flatten the meat mixture into a single layer.

Dollop the mashed potatoes on top of the meat and use a spoon or spatula to spread it flat to the edges.

If desired, create a ruffled texture in the potato topping by raking it with a fork.

Bake the Shepherd’s Pie until slightly golden, about 25-30 minutes. You can grill the top for 1-2 minutes as well to really golden it up if necessary.

If you would like to make this recipe vegetarian, you can swap the meat for mushrooms or lentils.

If you prefer low-Carb or Keto: swap the mashed potatoes for mashed cauliflower.

MEMBER PARTICIPATION APPLICATION The Guard of Honour will be assembled offshore in the Broadwater adjacent to the Cenotaph in the Broadwater Parklands.

The area will be identified with SYC yachting buoys.

As the Dawn Service will commence at approximately 0500hrs, the raft-up will commence Saturday 24th April 2020.

All boats will have been allocated an arrival time and position prior to the day.

Queensland Water Police and VMR will be in attendance on the day.

Skippers are required to monitor VHF Channel 72 throughout the event.

There will be a limited number of vessels in the raft-up if your vessel is selected you will be allocated an arrival time and a position in the raft-up relative to your boat’s dimensions. The overall safety of the formation cannot be compromised, so arrival times and compliance with instructions must be adhered to.

All vessels will require 2 spring lines of at least 12m, 2 breast lines of 7m. And sufficient fenders, as the raft-up will be in place through 3 tide changes.
