Previously when I had the privilege of opening this event, I spoke about Connection: Our industry thrives and relies on connections. You all understand the interconnectedness between industry sectors. Every single sector relies on every other sector. Inefficiency or crisis in one will naturally have repercussions up and downstream of the chain, a ripple effect at varying levels. Collaboration: Having worked in the industry for a while now, and been witness to the frustrations of various sectors in how to solve supply chain issues, I know and you all know, the best way is to get key stakeholders in a room to work together towards solutions. Especially in a crisis, the industry rises to the challenges, puts aside its differences and just gets the job done.

Welcome Address On behalf of the SCLAA, I warmly welcome you all to the Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards (ASCLA), an event which has emerged as one of the most important occasions for the Supply Chain & Logistics Industry. We are delighted to be able to celebrate the highest of achievements and innovation in the industry. For those of you that attended last year, I did say were gonna need a bigger boat, so we got one. The last time we held this event in Sydney was 2019, which seems so long ago. There are over 470 in this room tonight, from all sectors of Supply Chain & Logistics-Ports, because most of our freight starts and ends on a ship, road transport, rail freight transport, freight forwarders, importers and exporters,

And speaking of crisis, the logistics and freight industry has waves of working under duress, but this was an understatement just a short 2 years ago. The crisis faced by our industry was so widespread that we even managed to get the attention of main stream media, we were declared an essential service (who would have thought) and are all essential workers!! But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention and the results of working under crisis, was innovation. The acceleration of technological solutions being embraced by industry led us to acknowledge and introduce the relatively new awards of Big Data, IT and Business Intelligence award and Robotics, Automation and Emerging Technology. In the last few years, another focus was Resilience - it became a catch cry not only within our industry but globally. Risk mitigation was, and continues to be, at the forefront of decision making. The quick shift from Just in time to Just in case inventory managemnet, diversifying suppliers, customers, innovating new ways to manage the supply and movement of goods. So where are we now? I get asked a lot- what is the industry outlook, what are the industry issues, what is or should be the industry’s focus? Innovation: We are all in the same boat all going through the same pain currently with increased inflation due to

increased costs. Cost management will be a key focus as distributors and retailers volumes are expected to fall further with reduced consumer spending. What happens with low margins, high operating costs amid intense competition? Innovation. The key to success will be to do different. And to do that businesses need critical data to assist with decision making. Cash is no longer king, Data is. Where you can combine Data with AI, the results are critical predictive data. This is your crystal ball that leads to practical applications. But Innovation is a doing word-companies need to embed it into every day processes. Innovation needs to become a constant in your business, not a leap. Another key focus of the industry is … Human Capital: People are and always have been, any companies largest off balance sheet asset. There is a People shortage crisis-The retention and attraction of people to our industry remains critical. We not only need to increase the current workforce across all sectors, but we also need to attract a new workforce with the technical skills to manage the new technology. Disruption is the new normal: I was reading an article that stated our industry can expect annual large disruptive events. This has certainly been the case in recent timesgeopolitical turmoil is causing ongoing disruptions in supply chain, a ship stuck in the Suez canal, natural disasters as well as man made ones. Disruption is not always a negative as it leads to opportunities for growth, out of the box thinking and of course, innovation.. And, lastly, but certainly not least, Corporate Social Responsibility. (CSR) -environmental sustainability, ethical practices, responsible economic activity, decarbonisation & emission reduction. This is at the forefront of governments, businesses and consumers minds.

The Federal Government’s most recent budget provided more than $4.5 billion in climate-related spending. This includes $20.9 million over five years to decarbonise transport and infrastructure. The freight transport sector currently contributes to 46 per cent of emissions nationally, and transporting people and goods around Australia is predicted to be country’s largest source of emissions by 2030. Earlier this year, the Australian government confirmed its intention to introduce climate reporting obligations to introduce climate reporting obligations for large Australian Corporations- from July 2024. If you think this just applies to the big carbon emission produces-think again. The reporting is expected to phased in with entities >100 employees, >$50 million revenue or $25 million in assets required to report from 2027. But its not just government, the pressure is also coming from consumers, who are researching and being more selective with where they spend their money. Its Associations such as the SCLAA that can assist industry with information on mitigating these challenges and at the forefront of promoting innovation. About the SCLAA: We are Australia’s largest association for Supply Chain Professionals. We are also the largest cross sector association in the industry and here tonight, we have the largest cross sector gathering in the industry - those that work directly in supply chain & logistics- shipping, ports, transport, warehousing, importers, exporters, freight forwarders, retailers-have I left anyone out? And besides those that work in the industry, we have those that support the work of the industry-IT and software providers, automation specialists, Education and training institutions, legal, financial, industrial property

and infrastructure specialists…. we connect the industry with corporations who have cutting edge technology to solve industry issues or create the solutions needed. We collaborate with Partners in the training, education and career development sectors, like Tafe NSW and Institute of transport & logistics at Sydney University to promote the industry and its many career pathways, to ensure we attract the talent required, develop the skills of professionals and with events like tonight, celebrate its achievements. We run a mentoring programme for those at any level of their career journey or assisting those that are looking to enter, move sideways in the industry. SCLAA has Chapters in each state, including face to face networking events, seminars, webinars. We partner with the largest industry conference organisers including Akolade, CeMat, Forefront and Megatrans. SCLAA provides the platforms and opportunities for industry and its professionals to gather, network and exchange ideas, Being part of our association, fills the basic need to be a part of something more, a tribe of like

minded individuals, working to make change that lead to far reaching improvements for industry overall? With respect to this year’s awards, a record number of submissions was received across all categories, demonstrating extraordinary innovation and ingenuity. Choosing Finalists from such a high calibre of Nominations, made it truly challenging and I would like to thank Nigel Edwards and the Judging committee for their expertise and tenacity in choosing the worthy recipients. Of course, such an event would not be possible without the support and hard work of many. In addition to his executive roles, Paul has also served as Chairman of a global digital marketing group based in London, served on various University and Government advisory Boards and also on Boards in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods and farming sectors. Migrating from Northern Ireland, Paul knows the value of Australia Post as an essential service; trusted to connect Australians to each other and to friends and family around the world.

Paul Graham is the Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Australia Post. Paul is a supply chain industry leader, with more than 30 years’ experience, starting his career at 18 in customer service in the international cargo industry. Paul comes to Australia Post from Woolworths Group, where he was Chief Supply Chain Officer and Managing Director of Primary Connect. In this role he oversaw a strategic rebuild of the supply chain network, including over $2 billion of infrastructure investment. He has held senior roles working across logistics in Australia, the UK, Taiwan, Singapore and Germany, including as Global Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer for Europe, Middle East & Africa for DHL. Environmental Excellence Award High Commendations All Purpose Transport

All Purpose Transport (APT) is a Queensland-based lastmile delivery provider with a client list that includes brands like Rheem, Cotton On, King Living, BP, IKEA, Castrol, Fantastic Furniture, and Bunzl, performing around 3000 deliveries each day. Established in 1975, APT has a business model that engages owner-drivers who select and purchase their delivery vehicles to perform services under the APT brand. In late 2017, APT launched Project EV, recognizing the environmental impact of its current fleet, comprising over 280 internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This project’s primary goal is to explore and implement sustainable delivery methods. APT’s fleet consumes approximately 60,000 litres of diesel each week, resulting in a staggering 160 tonnes of CO2 emissions, contributing to climate change. Project EV aims to significantly reduce emissions while preserving APT’s owner-driver model during the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). APT’s electric vehicle fleet now consists of 10 vehicles operating in South-East Queensland, reducing the CO2 output by around 32 tonnes of CO2 a month. By mid-2024, the fleet will expand with an additional 5 vehicles, contributing to approximately 60% of all new furniture deliveries managed by APT. Project EV reflects APT’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally responsible last-mile delivery service. By embracing new technologies and implementing effective change management, APT aims to drive positive change in the transport industry while maintaining the integrity of its owner-driver business model. This initiative sets a commendable example for the industry, promoting environmental responsibility and adaptability.

Our journey to net zero is complex with many technological and societal uncertainties. The first step towards low emission freight transport is to understand our current emissions, the ‘Baseline’. For many companies, calculating their baseline transport Carbon emissions is complex and time consuming. Many companies use multiple freight providers around Australia, and having the required data in one place to measure the estimated carbon impact is highly complex and expensive – and not being undertaken by many Australian companies. Cario, working with Swinburne University, developed a Carbon Calculator which allows companies to measure their Scope 1 and 3 carbon emissions across their entire freight portfolio, including third party carriers and their own fleet. This tool allows companies to make informed decisions about the environmental impact of their freight operations, and to report on these emissions to an International Carbon reporting standard, GICD. The calculator estimates carbon emissions at the time of booking, allowing companies to make informed mode and carrier selection based on this – and not just price or estimated time of arrival, which has been the traditional choice provided. This means companies can provide the end consumer with carbon emission expectations before they purchase a product and book the freight service. Many European companies are already required to calculate their transport carbon emissions. We believe the Australian government will soon introduce mandates, requiring companies to measure and report on their carbon emissions, including Scope 1, 2 and 3. This tool is instrumental for Australian companies to address such requirements.

Bruce has been a stalwart of the Supply Chain industry for over 35 years, designing and delivering innovative automated and robotic solutions to ‘turbocharge’ distribution centre performance. His influence has spanned many industry sectors and facilitated the ongoing success of some of Australia’s industry leading organisations. Starting in design with Dexion, Bruce moved into Supply Chain consulting with Symonds Henderson before starting his own design business, DCL Solutions. DCL Solutions was acquired by BPS Global in 2021 to ensure Bruce’s many skills were harnessed for the benefit of its customers.

Dean started in the industry in the 1980’s, helping out his mum’s freight forwarding business while studying at university. This sparked an interest in global freight forwarding, supply chain management and customer success, leading to overseas tenures and additional studies in Switzerland, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.

In leading BPS Global Australia’s robotics and automation, Bruce performs different critical functions, including consulting on concept design and integration of material handling solutions into newly built facilities. In every project he is involved in, Bruce delivers above expectations, improving existing facilities to maximise efficiency and drive profit – he is at the forefront of strategic planning, quality control, contract negotiations and financial reviews for clients. Leading BPS’ team in project engineering and integration supervision, Bruce possesses tremendous team-building and motivational skills, with a passion for supply chain and logistics which rubs off on those around him. Over the course of his career, Bruce has accumulated a vast industry network, building lasting relationships with clients, system suppliers, senior management and official governing bodies. Dean returned to Australia in 2001 to take up a leadership role in a direct sourcing big box retailer’s organisation, overseeing their sourcing, procurement, supply chain and national W&D channels. In 2012, Dean joined Nick Jones (Ligentia’s founder) to establish Ligentia Australia. Today, Dean leads a team delivering data-driven supply chain solutions for brands such as Freedom Furniture, Myer, Spendless Shoes, industrial giant TotalEnergies, brand distributors such as United Living and Ionnic, and agriculture machinery specialists Muddy River. Rayleen Woods is a mother of one and has another child on the way, she is from Western Sydney and has been working in the Supply Chain & Logistics Sector for 6 years. One of her first roles in the sector was operating a forklift and a crane at BlueScope Steel. Her role there also included inventory management. During her employment, she realised the importance of skilling up for the future and, as a result, completed a Certificate IV in Logistics and another in Warehousing Operations at TAFE Meadowbank. With the assistance of her TAFE teacher, she was successful in gaining an administrative role in heavy vehicle transport sector with the SCT Group. Over the last year, she has also completed a Diploma of Logistics again with TAFE Meadowbank. The skills and knowledge she has learned in that course and the guidance from her manager – Ben Bailey have helped her to be promoted to a Regional Transport Planner at the SCT Group. Rayleen finds working as a Regional Transport Planner appealing due to the combination of problem-solving, analytical challenges, applying leadership, environmental impact, and the dynamic nature of the field. Cathy-Anne Jones 2023 ASCLA Committee Chair What an amazing turnout for the #ASCLA2023 Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards! This year saw a return to Sydney after 2 previous Awards in Melbourne. Over 470 seats were filled on the night, making it the largest ASCLA to date. The event was held at the elegant Fullerton Hotel housed in the refurbished GPO building at No. 1 Martin Place. This year was humorously hosted by comedic MC, Sam McCool. The awards attracted the who’s who of Australian Supply Chain with keynote provide by MD and CEO Australia Post, Paul Graham, who gave us an update on Australia Post and supply chain challenges, and emphasized the importance of mental health and supporting workers across our industry. An important aspect of the awards and a foundation for SCLAA, is to provide events that facilitate networking, collaboration & the sharing of ideas. This year we listened to feedback and provided more time in the night to network while celebrating the winners and highly commended. The buzz in the room was great as colleagues and contacts caught up in between celebrations. The ASCLA’s are continuing to be a key event on the Supply Chain calendar and offer recognition and encouragement for those in the industry in increasingly competitive categories. It was a pleasure to recognise those who have achieved much over the past year in what has proven to be a

It was an honour to represent the leadership team at SCLAA and to Chair this event committee. I appreciate the support of the Board and SCLAA Chair, Sue Tomic for their faith in me, and the ASCLA team in bringing this event to you in 2023. My sincere thanks goes to the ASCLA inner circle Chief Judge Nigel Edwards, Partnership Manager Megan White, Fran De Klerk, Sam Varrano, Victorian Director Rakesh Bandipelli, Mary Soliman, Ishan Galapathy, Papillion Gordon and the many other volunteers and helpers on the night. Thanks to the ASCLA committee for your hard work in making these awards so memorable. I am surrounded by passionate supply chain professionals who give their time and efforts all year round to make SCLAA such a great association and the ASCLA’s such a growing success.
