SCLAA

Chair’s Report

It has certainly been a very busy couple of months, both for SCLAA and in Supply Chain and Logistics as we navigate through the usual challenges of end of year peak cargo movements, goods handling, and delivery.

For the SCLAA, we held our annual ASCLA awards in Sydney. The Awards this year sold out weeks prior to closing and achieved a record of 500 attendees across all sectors of the industry. This is not to take away from the fact that our State committees also delivered 57 events with over 3000 attendees (70% which were free of charge to members).

The ASCLA event was a fitting celebration to what has been a very successful year for the Association as a whole. During the year we delivered many “firsts” for the Association.

Our first acquisition - the Marketplace and Community platform that is Supply Chain Partners. This digital community platform delivers the following benefits for our members:

1. The ability to create and self manage your own Member profile.

2. Companies can take advantage of the industry specific directory of goods and services on the platform. The directory of industry services and products is a marketing tool you control, allowing you to post your own articles, videos, services, news, links to your website and social media channels.

3. Individuals can setup a LinkedIn-style personal profile, showcasing their skills, posting white papers or articles.

4. The platform allows direct member-to-member connectivity - a much requested benefit from our membership base to allow enhanced networking opportunities.

5. A Jobs Board specific to Supply Chain & Logisticsboth for those looking for talent and for job seekers.

6. It also provided a Global member base – 22% of our members are now based overseas which precipitated the addition of Global/International Division. As Australia is an island, very much reliant on international relationships for our prosperity, we recognised that global B2B connectivity is critical to the Associations future growth as well.

We continue to celebrate this achievement by offering our SCLAA members complimentary membership to Supply Chain Partners platform!

During the year we also launched our education and training collaboration with Wisetech Training Academy. With skills shortages in our industry at an all-time high, this collaboration is both timely and critical. The courseware includes micro-accredited training for new entrants to the industry as well as seasoned professionals. SCLAA members with an ABN receive 12.5% discount on all courseware.

We also continued to foster our strategic relationships with the largest conference and trade show organisers across Australia.

Cemat, Supply Chain Week and Megatrans were some of the conferences where we assisted with keynote speakers and agenda topics to bring to the forefront, the issues and solutions that are having an impact on Supply Chain & Logistics across the nation.

We will be launching the first of many Virtual Summits in the first half of 2025 - an initiative started by Supply Chain Partners, which we will continue to improve. This will be co-ordinated by Independent Director Stephen Lakey.

We have continued to contribute, support and raise awareness of other NFP’s and charities.

Through our annual IWD event, this year we supported the Leukaemia Foundation and Worlds Greatest Shave where we raised awareness and donated over $17k to the Foundation.

And as mentioned, we have delivered the largest ASCLA awards event in SCLAA’s history, surpassing any other industry award ceremonies.

We recognise that Committees are the engine room of SCLAA Divisional events. We have 52 Committee members across all 5 States and are always looking for more-contact your State President to get involved!

In 2025, the board will focus on supporting and investing in Committee member attraction and retention.

We are ever mindful that the Association exists for our members. We will continue to canvas regular member feedback via surveys and encourage direct communication to enhance member benefit deliverables. To this end, we have formed a Membership

subcommittee under the leadership of SA State Director, Brett McGowran. The subcommittee will be dedicated to member initiatives, growth and retention.

We will also be focusing on global expansion - growing our relationships internationally to bring benefits to our members locally.

In line with our global expansion strategy, we will also be launching a marketing campaign to align our Association name change. SCLAA and SCP will continue to operate under the banner of the Australasian Supply Chain & Logistics Association Ltd.

The current Board has achieved more deliverables, financial stability and brand awareness of the Association in the last 3 years than any prior. Much has been achieved and there is still much to be done.

I am honoured and deeply grateful for the support of the Board to continue as Chair and their recognition that the SCLAA needs to be as dynamic as the industry we serve.

We will continue to align the vision of the association with our members goals of even greater achievements in the coming year.

I would like to thank the Board, our hard-working Committees, our marketing team and admin resources, for all your support, passion and dedication during the year.

On behalf of all, I wish our members and partners a very happy Christmas season and a prosperous and peacefilled New Year.

QLD Division Report

Wrapping Up 2024: A Year of Growth, Connection, and SOLD-OUT Success!

As the year draws to a close, let’s take a moment to celebrate what an incredible year 2024 has been for the SCLAA QLD Division. The magic of “4” was definitely in the air—4 sold-out events, 4 new committee members, and plenty of milestones that made this our best year yet (if I may say so myself)!

2024 Highlights: What We Achieved Together

From networking nights to industry tours, we packed the calendar with opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. Here’s a quick look at our standout events:

• Feb: New Year Networking

Mar: International Women’s Day (SOLD OUT!)

• Apr: Asahi Site Tour (SOLD OUT!)

• Jun: Future Workforce of Supply Chain Workshop

Jul: EB Games Site Tour (SOLD OUT!)

• Jul: Mentoring Kick-Off & Networking Night

Aug: Leading Excellence Book Launch with CIPS

A huge thank you to Amazon for their hospitality during our sold-out Lytton Fulfillment Centre tour. From innovation to efficiency, the experience left us in awe, and their donation to the Disaster Relief Hub showcased their commitment to social responsibility.

We also celebrated industry insights at the BXM Breakfast and saw our mentoring program thrive like never before.

Mentoring Program: A Standout Success in 2024

This year, our mentoring program has gone from strength to strength, providing invaluable learning and connection opportunities for our members. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible mentees and mentors for their dedication and commitment.

The program delivered two outstanding Coffee Couch sessions, offering insightful discussions on key industry topics. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Richa Vijayraj for sharing her expertise on sustainability in supply chains and to Cian Brennan, General Manager for Victoria and Tasmania and Head of Exports for Savino Del Bene, for an engaging session on air, sea, and freight logistics.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible efforts of our Vice President & Mentoring Lead, Chris Josey, whose leadership has been instrumental in organising and driving the success of the program. Thank you, Chris, for your passion and dedication to fostering growth in our community.

Welcome Aboard: 4 New Committee Members!

We’re thrilled to have grown our QLD committee to a strong team of 10 members this year. Special shoutouts to our latest additions: Mark Carter and Raj Masoud. Your fresh ideas and enthusiasm are already making waves!

Looking Ahead to 2025

Before we officially close the year, we’ll be holding our annual strategy meeting in December to reflect, strategise, and finalise plans for 2025. Exciting things are on the horizon!

Thank You for an Incredible Year!

To our members, sponsors, and partners: thank you for making 2024 a standout year. Your support and energy keep us inspired to do more for the supply chain community in Queensland.

Wishing you all a safe, joyful holiday season filled with connection, laughter, and maybe even a cheeky eggnog or two.

See you in 2025!

VIC/TAS Division Report

As 2024 draws to a close, I wanted to provide a personal reflection based my involvement with SCLAA this year. In one word, it is – Thankful.

This year has been the been personally for me, the busiest and most demanding. Even through SCLAA events and issues have come at erratic times, it’s been great to help, lead and facilitate knowing I was giving something back to the organisation that has helped me grow along the way.

I am thankful for our leadership team. In Stephen, Rakesh and Faraz in guiding my way and really just allowing me to find the best way to work within the association, even when my schedule’s been difficult (which is often!).

I am thankful for our sponsors. It’s been particularly rewarding to be able to help others on this side and help other businesses maximise their return on investment. Thank you for the ones I’ve been able to work with, in allowing us to show your products and solutions in the best light. Also thank you for sharing your innovations and solutions that our members can learn from!

I am thankful to our members. Our memberships have grown and we they are active! Attendance has been fantastic across the board and varied. Please keep attending and providing us with feedback in how we can can better add value for you. The VIC/TAS team has made a conscious decision to provide varied events, topics and presenters based on what you said was important. Let’s keep it up!

I am thankful to our committee team. In Tab, Elsie, Renee, Gan, Devraj, Devan, Atharva and Girish. Welcome

to the team also, Aayushya! This team’s the best in the biz in helping each other out. We need to particularly give them more recognition for all the work they do in the background.

I am thankful for the National team! In Megan, Sam, Fran and Vicki without whom we would all be lost!

Also wanted to thank Sue’s leadership! We all steer in her direction.

Finally, I am thankful to the Friends of SCLAA. They are not committee members but they are always there to support. In particular, I wanted to thank Daniel Ahmadi and Pat Cieri.

Looking forward to celebrating the EOY event with you!

This has been a really successful year for the VIC/ TAS division. We’ve had more events, more webinars, members and attendance, more involvement from software and tech industry which perfectly encapsulates where supply chain is heading.

We cannot wait for 2025.

Stay safe and be blessed.

WA Division Report

Here’s hoping that your 2024 Supply Chains have been more predictable and subject to fewer upheavals than in the previous few (COVID) years.

Things seem to have stabilised in WA although the aftermath of the Trump victory and any knock-on effects on the Chinese trade regime have yet to unravel.

As with the economy, the committee SCLAA in WA has emerged from the pandemic period with renewed energy. We’ve welcomed four new committee members, Jarrad Lahne from Arup, Hayley Wilson from Randstad, Daniel Green from High Performance Leaders and Sherie Le Brun from Direct Couriers, who will be bringing their diverse experience and enthusiasm to play to delivering an array of events in 2025.

In early October Randstad were our hosts for a panel event titled ‘The Power of Employer Branding’. A diverse audience of forty-plus learned what factors are most important to employers and employees when planning a career in the early 21st century.

A week later, we were the guests in Vic Park of Transvirtual a Transportation Management System provider and SCLAA National Partner, for a presentation and discussion of their application’s capabilities.

A couple of weeks ago, it was great to see significant West Australian representation at the ASCLA awards in Sydney. Special congratulations to Dr Sahar Goudarzi from Deloitte in securing a High Commendation in the Future Leaders category and to Brian Chikwava and the two Kelly’s from Transitainer WA for being finalists in the Training, Education and Development and Transport and Logistics Excellence categories respectively.

In early March 2025 we’ll be holding another International Women’s Day event, for which plans are being finalised.

The 2025 Mentoring Program will be launched early in the new year. It was great that our 2024 mentees, Andrew Bell and Deng Achol could join us as guests at our last committee meeting.

SCLAA WA would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your colleagues and your loved ones a very merry festive period, and hopefully the opportunity to replenish your batteries ahead of 2025.

If you’d like to learn more about the association and even participate in what we do, don’t hesitate to get in touch, either in person at our Christmas event

SA/NT Committee Profiles

I have been working in various Supply Chain and Manufacturing roles for my entire 30-year career. It is such an evolving and exciting space to work and develop yourself. Over the years I have moved through various functions including Quality and Six Sigma, Manufacturing, Industrialisation, End-2-End Supply Chain Management, Strategy and Transformations. I have been very fortunate to lead different teams across Asia Pacific, but have always called Adelaide home.

When I am not working, I enjoy time with my family. We have 2 daughters and love to get out travelling, camping and fishing. For me the emphasis is on fishing. I love to cook over charcoal and also enjoy photography and art.

I joined the SCLAA in 2020 to help redefine the association in South Australia and to help grow my local network and share my experiences with others. It has been a great journey for me, starting as State President and moving into the State Director’s role at the end of 2023. I love to offer my time as a Mentor and help those forming their careers in Supply Chain navigate all the different opportunities that may present to them. Today

we showcase the new 2024 Committee member profiles, as we really want to share the diversity and experience we are bringing to the SA Division. We are seeking to grow our events, memberships and committee membership in 2025, so I urge all supply chain professionals in SA to consider how you might get involved further in the Industry and bring your experience and stories to our group, in any capacity. I look forward to spending time with you all in 2025 and beyond.

Sara Dixon SA/NT State President

After graduating with a degree in accounting, I began my career as a Despatch Clerk, where I discovered my passion for logistics. Although I completed my accounting studies, I chose to pursue a career in Supply Chain instead. Today, I have built a diverse and fulfilling career in Leadership, Logistics Management, Operations, Continuous Improvement and Commercial Management.

One of my favourite aspects of my role has been the opportunity to travel both national and internationally to solve problems and explore best practices in the industry. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family going camping and fishing on the boat.

Having recently joined SCLAA, I am excited about the prospects for 2025 in the SA/NT Division, where we have ambitious plans ahead.

Matthew Smith SA/NT Committee

I have been working with Schneider Electric since 2004. I’m currently the Director of Logistics Operations & Transport for the Pacific Region.

I have more than 20 years of Supply Chain experience, primarily managing Manufacturing Operations, Distribution Centres & Transport, with a special focus on Digitisation, Sustainability and Business Continuity.

Schneider has undertaken significant Supply Chain Transformations over this journey and I’ve provided strong leadership to the Pacific Region during the execution of these programs.

Sara Dixon SA/NT State President
Brett McGowran SA/NT State Director
Matthew Smith SA/NT Committee

I hold a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, with strong experience in Lean and Six Sigma methodology.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my Family, with 3 kids, and enjoying the outdoors and being involved in various sporting endeavours.

I only recently joined SCLAA in October 2024, however, I have had the pleasure of presenting at prior SCLAA events over the past years in NSW.

I’m very passionate about Supply Chain and interested to continue my learning journey, but also continue looking for more ways to give back to the Supply Chain community.

I have worked in various senior roles of international corporations including 8 years as VP of the Digital Energy division of Schneider Electric. It was here that I was introduced to the critical importance of the supply chain function within global organisations and became enthralled

with the mechanics of designing and leading effective supply chains.

Having lived and worked in the UK, France, US, China, Korea and Australia, diversity, inclusiveness, innovation and high performance are key elements of my leadership style. Now back in Australia and based in Adelaide for the past 4 years I’m currently the CEO of OilPath Hydraulics, a true Engineering company designing and manufacturing hydraulic solutions for a wide range of market sectors.

My passions are travelling, history and art; all of which allow me to truly appreciate the different cultures, religions and customs in the countries that I visit. I have recently taken up hiking which has quickly developed into another passion; love getting out into nature with my 3 sons.

I joined SCLAA in 2020 as I wanted to keep abreast of developments in the supply chain world. Most companies have a sizable portion of their spend in SC and with the numerous global crises that are now becoming more of the norm (conflict/climate change/ economic uncertainty) it’s even more critical to put SC on top of the agenda in board room discussions. I believe that SCLAA can play a very important role in developing supply chain professionals which was my primary motivation for joining our group.

SCLAA Engages at Ports Australia Biennial Conference in Hobart 29-31 Oct 2024

The 2024 Ports Australia Biennial Conference in Hobart welcomed over 350 industry leaders under the theme “Navigating New Horizons: Adapting for Tomorrow’s Challenges.” Representing the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA), I had the opportunity to engage with global experts and decision-makers, reaffirming the critical role ports play in Australia’s economic success and supply chain resilience.

Australian ports facilitate 99% of the country’s international trade by volume, supporting over 694,000 local jobs. With $650 billion in goods passing through each year, they are a cornerstone of the nation’s supply chain. Key conference discussions focused on decarbonisation, governance, and innovation, with notable contributions from global leaders like Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority, and Dr. Patrick Verhoeven, Managing Director of the International Association of Ports and Harbors.

Collaboration with Pacific neighbors, including representatives from Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand, emphasised the importance of regional partnerships in addressing shared challenges such as sustainability and infrastructure development. These conversations align with SCLAA’s mission to drive forward-thinking solutions in the supply chain industry.

SCLAA extends heartfelt thanks to Ports Australia CEO Mike Gallacher for his ongoing support and collaboration with the SCLAA and the Supply Chain Industry as a whole, and to Major Sponsor TasPorts for hosting this impactful event. The conference demonstrated that through leadership, collaboration, and innovation, Australian ports will continue to adapt and thrive in an evolving global landscape.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap: Unlocking the Transformative Power of Simulation and Digital Twins in Supply Chains

TMX Transform recently surveyed 250 supply chain decision-makers to gauge their awareness and concerns about various technologies. Surprisingly, 60% of respondents were uncertain about digital twins and simulation technology, or their purposes. Nick De Klerk, TMX’s Senior Director of Supply Chain and an expert in simulation technology, unpacks why even seasoned leaders may not fully grasp these tools’ transformative potential.

When I read that 60% of supply chain leaders didn’t understand simulation, I wasn’t surprised. This finding from the Attitudes to Innovation report highlights the growing divide between the rapid advancement of simulation technology and industry awareness. Despite its success stories, we must ask: Why are the practical benefits of simulation still misunderstood?

A major factor is the overuse of buzzwords like artificial intelligence, simulation, digital twins, and metaverse, which are often misapplied in publications and media. This misrepresentation obscures their real-world benefits and leaves essential questions unanswered: “What does it do?” and “How does it help me?” Without clear explanations, decision-makers struggle to understand these tools’ value.

Senior leaders without technical backgrounds may find it challenging to comprehend the principles driving these technologies, further widening the knowledge gap. Addressing this requires precise, practical insights tailored to supply chain contexts. Here’s a starting point:

Digital Twins vs.

Simulation: What’s the Difference?

1. Data Connection:

Simulations use predefined data to model systems for testing scenarios.

• Digital twins work with live data feeds, providing real-time insights into physical systems.

2. Focus:

• Simulations answer “what if” questions, allowing users to test different scenarios while keeping other variables constant.

• Digital twins offer a holistic view, focusing on performance monitoring and predictive maintenance.

3. Usage:

Simulations involve setting parameters, running models, and analyzing outputs to compare scenarios.

Digital twins allow for real-time, dynamic interaction with live data.

Think of simulation as a flight simulator—testing various scenarios in a virtual environment, disconnected from a real aircraft. A digital twin, on the other hand, resembles a live monitor of an aircraft in flight, showing real-time data on fuel levels, exhaust temperatures, and other critical metrics.

Who Benefits Most from Simulation?

Simulation shines in time-sensitive industries, where its ability to assess lead times and temporal impacts sets it apart from static models. Key sectors include:

• Fresh food and grocery supply chains

Postal and parcel delivery services

• Urgent spare parts logistics

To fully harness simulation, organizations need the right culture:

1. Self-awareness: Acknowledge in-house expertise limitations. Many businesses overestimate their ability to adopt these technologies independently.

2. Collaboration: Combine industry experts with technical specialists to bridge the gap between physical systems and digital models.

3. Curiosity: Embrace new improvement methods rather than clinging to familiar practices.

Despite their potential, simulation and digital twins remain underutilized, often due to unsuccessful inhouse attempts to develop capabilities without sufficient expertise. Businesses must explore the true benefits of these tools while recognizing the value of external expertise to complement their knowledge. This blend of skills is crucial for achieving measurable business growth.

“Digitization is now a prerequisite for achieving growth, so more senior leaders need to keep pace with its acceleration.”

“Winning the award twice is not by accident,” adds Pat. “Sustainability is not something you do once and forget it. It’s a lifelong commitment. Our employees have embraced the challenge and we’re so proud of what we have accomplished, but we know we can do even better.”

Part of their efforts can be seen in their new Australian headquarters. A state-of-the-art solar energy installation reduces their carbon footprint and, at times, generates surplus energy. Creating more power than what they consume is an outcome every company should strive to achieve.

Pat is the first to point out Interroll’s dedication extends beyond Australia. “Interroll offices around the world are taking steps to be better environmental stewards. This is only possible with the support of our global headquarters in Switzerland. It’s a top down message and everyone is answering the call.”

Unlocking Fleet Efficiency with Linde FleetFOCUS

As businesses adopt digital solutions to optimise their operations, Linde Material Handling’s fleet management solution, FleetFOCUS, stands out as an advanced system designed to streamline material handling. This innovative solution enhances Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) by enabling real-time communication between businesses, their fleets, and operators, while leveraging data to simplify and optimise complex warehouse and transportation processes.

Linde’s National Fleet Contract Manager, Stuart Hitchens, provides valuable insights into FleetFOCUS and its ability to monitor material handling equipment.

“Fleet management provides vital insights into your equipment’s operation, ultimately improving safety, efficiency, and productivity while ensuring compliance with government regulations,” says Stuart.

Linde’s FleetFOCUS gives businesses control over their resources by enabling real-time fleet monitoring and management. It provides insights to enhance operational efficiency, allowing businesses to monitor daily equipment usage, identify under- or over-utilised vehicles, observe driving patterns, control vehicle access, review WHS compliance in real time, and make informed decisions for optimal fleet performance.

With FleetFOCUS, businesses can identify and address fleet utilisation and operational issues before they affect the bottom line. By analysing equipment usage, they can adjust their resources to where it’s needed most. FleetFOCUS also monitors forklift usage and identifies

infrastructure damage, providing immediate feedback on operator behaviour and equipment conditions.

“Our system was the first Australian fleet management solution with dual Wi-Fi and GPRS connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted data access,” explains Stuart. With reliable Wi-Fi and GPRS (3G and 4G) connectivity, this advanced system ensures seamless fleet management even in large or complex environments.

“FleetFOCUS utilises data from forklifts to monitor key factors such as hydraulic traction and driver presence, providing businesses with insights into how their equipment is being used,” says Stuart. These datadriven insights empower businesses to make informed operational decisions, such as adjusting their fleets to match seasonal demand or identifying underutilised equipment. By highlighting opportunities for resource reallocation, FleetFOCUS enables businesses to reduce costs and make the most of their assets.

“It’s about optimising resources, not adding unnecessary equipment,” says Stuart.

Don’t just take our word for it – see why Chemist Warehouse chose FleetFOCUS to optimise their fleet management.

Chemist Warehouse + Linde Material Handling: A Prescription for Success

Optimising cost-to-serve won’t save you from shrinking market share

In 2023, Australians spent $63.6 billion online, with more households shopping online than ever before, according to Australia Post. In 2023, 9.5 million households shopped online, compared to 8.1 million in 2019. But as an industry, we still don’t understand the impact online is going to have on retail.

New data from Roy Morgan earlier this year revealed market disruptors Temu and Shein are rapidly swallowing market share, nearing AUD $3B and growing. And that’s before we’ve even mentioned Amazon. Within six years, it has claimed 42 percent of sales in online marketplaces. E-commerce is eroding bricks-and-mortar sales.

Amazon has invested significantly in local distribution and fulfilment. If others decide to take this approach, the outcome could be more extreme than anticipated.

Australian retailers are stuck in their old ways. Faceto-face interaction and personal relationships with customers are the way retailers worked for decades. But when e-commerce started to take off 20 years ago and IT companies used customer search history to build a profile of likes and dislikes, the way retailers operated changed.

The data was more sophisticated. Retailers could separate buying habits of men from women, young from old, rich from poor, urban from rural, culture from culture in a micro-marketing frenzy to help retailers target those more interested in their products.

Data yielded from e-commerce can tell businesses what their customers like right now, based upon previous purchases and buying habits. But the next transformation in retail is here, and the businesses failing to adapt will be left behind.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are being used to predict what customers want to buy, before they know, based on predictive analytics. Retailers have the ability to connect the right products in the right place at the right time with the right customer – before that customer has realised they need it.

Let’s take an example. A thirty-something searches for private health insurance online. A day later, advertisements for house paint begin to appear on their social media feeds. Why? Because AI knows that half of all applicants for new private health insurance do so when they are starting a family. Half of these will need to make alterations to their home to accommodate a baby for the first time. Ninety per cent of those will repaint the nursery in anticipation of their new arrival in six months.

So, when the thirty-something goes searching for private health insurance, retailers know to offer special deals on cans of paint, before the prospective customer has even thought about re-modelling the house.

E-commerce platforms can monitor conversations and interests on Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, Facebook and other social media platforms, along with search history on Google, and matches them against age, spending levels, and location to predict future needs. It identifies lifestyle, interests, values and beliefs, personality traits, social class and aspirations, opinions and attitudes, and ultimately, future buying patterns.

Retailers who acknowledge the inevitable have done and are doing this, transforming their operating models. But the laggards ignoring e-commerce are doing it to their detriment and to their end.

It is not all doom and gloom – there is an opportunity for innovation. But while optimizing the online costto-serve and omnichannel fulfilment is crucial, it is shrinking market share that should sound the alarm. Adapt and get ahead of the changing market conditions or you will no longer be a player.

Managing Risk with ClearVision AI Cameras – the Driver Monitoring System from Microlise

For fleet managers and transport operators, safeguarding drivers while maintaining operational efficiency is a constant priority. But when vehicles leave the depot, ensuring driver safety becomes challenging— especially with the rise in distracted driving incidents. That’s where Microlise’s award-winning ClearVision AI Distraction Camera steps in. Recognised as a winner of the Australasian Fleet Champion Product Safety Award and shortlisted for the ASCL Automation, Robotics, and Emerging Technology Award, ClearVision is designed to empower operators to reduce risky behaviours on the road, like smartphone use, helping to protect drivers, assets, and the communities they serve.

Why are AI Distraction Cameras essential?

Distracted driving is a rising risk factor with severe consequences. In Australia, 30% of fatal accidents and 45% of serious injury crashes are linked to driver distraction. Research shows that phone use while driving increases crash risk fourfold, and texting makes it 23 times more likely.

Microlise’s ClearVision AI camera takes safety to the next level, leveraging AI to target distractions and improve road behaviour. For instance, AI distraction cameras have been shown to achieve up to 80% reduction in mobile phone distractions, 51% reduction in collisions, 81% reduction in smoking and 76% reduction in near collisions.

The Heinrich Pyramid, commonly used in occupational safety, illustrates that for every serious incident, there are numerous risky behaviors and minor incidents. ClearVision’s proactive approach, which emphasises early detection of risky behaviors, enables fleet managers to prevent incidents before they escalate into severe collisions. This shift from post-incident management

(First Notification of Loss) to proactive prevention (First Notification of Risk) represents a vital step forward in fleet safety.

How ClearVision Works to Reduce Risk

ClearVision AI Camera is an AI-powered Driver Monitoring System within the ClearVision range that detects risky behaviours in real time. With in-cab alerts, drivers are given immediate feedback, enabling them to self-correct. If risky behaviour persists, the system records an event and notifies managers for follow-up during debriefs. Additionally, a forward-facing lens helps contextualise incidents, aiding managers in quickly establishing liability or exonerating drivers.

Fully integrated with the Microlise system, ClearVision records incidents for debriefs and coaching, while also providing a comprehensive toolset to support accident prevention, driver training, and safety improvements across the fleet.

A Shift to Proactive Safety: FNOR

Historically, Microlise’s tools focused on FNOL— addressing incidents after they occurred. With ClearVision, FNOR alerts drivers to risky behaviours before incidents happen, aligning with health and safety best practices. This proactive system enhances driver focus and helps reduce accidents.

Benefits of the ClearVision AI Camera

1. Enhanced Safety Environment: Extends health and safety protocols to mobile workers, helping protect drivers on the road.

2. Real-Time Driver Self-Correction: In-cab alerts provide drivers with immediate feedback, enabling them to correct their behavior before an incident occurs.

Proactive Safety with the Heinrich Pyramid

3.

Proactive Incident Prevention: FNOR detects risky behavior early, which can prevent many incidents from occurring.

4. Driver Protection & Liability: Quickly establishes liability and exonerates drivers when appropriate, reducing stress and minimising unnecessary legal proceedings.

5. Reduced Insurance Costs: Lower incident rates through behavior management can help reduce insurance expenses for operators.

6. Increased Vehicle Uptime: With 98% of recorded incidents undisputed, vehicles remain operational, minimising downtime.

7. Full Microlise Integration: ClearVision works seamlessly with Microlise, enabling a proportionate response through debriefs and training to foster safe driving habits.

Driving Safer Roads with ClearVision

Through ClearVision, Microlise enables fleet managers and operators to extend health and safety practices beyond the depot. ClearVision is more than a monitoring tool; it’s an essential solution for increasing road safety, reducing incidents, and supporting drivers in creating safer roadways for all.

Top 5 Signs it’s Time to Replace or Augment Your Legacy System

#1. Vendor is shutting down support

One of the clearest signs that it’s time to upgrade is when your current vendor is no longer offering support. If the company behind your legacy system is phasing out their services, it leaves your operation vulnerable. Without proper support, troubleshooting and updates become impossible, leading to downtime, inefficiencies, and costly disruptions. In addition, any security vulnerabilities or bugs that arise will not be fixed, leaving organisations still using outdated software as a goldmine for attack targets. Transitioning to a robust system ensures you have continued vendor support, as well as access to regular upgrades that keep your system running efficiently and securely.

#2. Hardware vendor demands large support payments

Are you facing escalating support fees just to keep your system running? Some hardware vendors make hefty support demands, holding your business hostage with high maintenance fees for outdated systems. These legacy solutions often lack flexibility and are costly to maintain, cutting into your bottom line. With a cloudbased solution, you can eliminate dependence on expensive hardware, as the software is scalable, adaptable, and doesn’t require heavy investments in infrastructure.

#3. Inability to make new changes or leverage modern tools

If your current system can no longer be updated or customised to meet your evolving needs, it’s a major sign that you’re falling behind. Many businesses find themselves stuck with a system that could once meet their needs but can no longer be adjusted or upgraded. You might still have access to some tools, but if the system can’t adapt to today’s requirements, it’s holding

your business back. Whether you need to scale your operations, add new features, or integrate with newer technologies, an advanced system offers the flexibility to evolve with your business needs.

#4. Operational inefficiencies due to manual processes Legacy systems often rely heavily on manual processes. Manual tasks not only slow down operations, but also introduce the risk of human error, which can result in inaccurate data, misplaced orders, and missed shipping deadlines. Top-tier software automates key processes such as order picking, inventory management, and reporting. This reduces human error, speeds up operations, and increases accuracy, ensuring a more efficient and streamlined workflow

#5. Inability to keep up with fulfillment demands

In today’s digital age, the supply chain environment demands agility, speed, and accuracy. From omnichannel fulfillment to real-time inventory visibility, outdated systems can’t meet the needs of modern warehouse operations. If your system lacks the capability to provide real-time data, integrate with other systems, or support omnichannel strategies, you risk falling behind your competitors. A modern system keeps up with the demands of today’s fulfillment landscape, providing full visibility, real-time data, and the flexibility to support your future growth.

Rediscovering a Classic: The Reintroduction of Halls Est. 1849

In the heart of South Australia, a beloved beverage brand with roots stretching back to the mid-19th century is experiencing a remarkable revival. Halls Est. 1849, a name synonymous with quality and tradition, has returned to the Australian market, much to the delight of nostalgic consumers and new fans alike. This resurgence is largely thanks to the efforts of entrepreneur Cameron Ballard, whose passion for revitalizing iconic brands has breathed new life into Halls.

Halls was established in 1849 by George Hall in Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. From its inception, the company built a reputation for producing high-quality non-alcoholic beverages, including sodas, cordials, and soft drinks. By the late 19th century, Halls had become a household name, cherished for its distinctive flavours and commitment to quality ingredients. Throughout the 20th century, Halls continued to grow, adapting to changing consumer preferences while maintaining its core values. The brand’s beverages became staples in South Australian homes, known for their refreshing taste and superior craftsmanship. However, as the market evolved and competition intensified, Halls struggled to maintain its foothold. By the late 20th century, the once-dominant brand had faded from the market.

Crafting the Comeback

Enter Cameron Ballard, an Australian entrepreneur with a family history in the food and beverage industry. As a young child, he would often watch the soft drink line at his parent’s company as it rolled out every generic label in South Australia – Coles, Woolworths, Black and Gold, No Frills, Franklins etc. This led to an approach by an upcoming American brand to be their exclusive Australasian manufacturers and distributors – Jolt Cola – widely renowned as the very first ‘energy drink’. The brand, known for its “all the sugar and twice the caffeine” slogan, became an Australian cult favourite in the 1990s. By the early 2000s, the flavour range had expanded

to include Orange & Cream, Root Beer, Vanilla Cream Soda and Black Cherry. As Cameron Ballard entered the business as the 2nd generation with a renewed passion, he set about reintroducing these classic flavours whilst maintaining their original formulations. Ballard tapped into a strong sense of nostalgia while appealing to a new generation of consumers. This success has been replicated with Halls, showcasing Ballard’s knack for leveraging brand heritage and quality to reignite market interest.

The reintroduction of Halls Est. 1849 involved meticulous market research to understand contemporary consumer preferences. Ballard and his team focused on retaining the authentic recipes that long-time fans remembered while ensuring the products met today’s standards. The product line includes traditional sodas and cordials, crafted to deliver the same distinctive taste that made Halls a household name. Marketing efforts have emphasized Halls’ storied history and local South Australian roots. The brand’s packaging reflects its heritage, combining a classic look with modern appeal. Engaging with consumers has been a key element of the reintroduction strategy. Through social media campaigns, promotional events, and collaborations with local businesses, Halls has effectively reestablished its presence in the market. The brand’s emphasis on authenticity and quality has resonated with consumers, generating a positive reception and strong demand.

Logistics & Distribution

A crucial aspect of the reintroduction has been the strategic choice of distribution channels to maximize accessibility. Early in 2024, Cameron Ballard selected TT Logistics as his fulfilment service provider, ensuring efficient and reliable e-commerce distribution of Jolt and later this year Halls products. TT Logistics is renowned for its advanced warehousing solutions, efficient fulfilment services, and comprehensive distribution network. As part of the Toyota Group of companies, TT Logistics

utilises the full extent of TPS (Toyota Production System), known for its efficiency, quality control, and continuous improvement. TPS ensures efficient operations, reduced waste, and high standards of quality, directly benefiting Jolt and Halls by enhancing reliability and efficiency in the supply chain.

TT Logistics’ expertise in contract logistics has played a pivotal role in the successful reintroduction of Halls Drinks. Their state-of-the-art warehousing facilities, equipped with automation and advanced technology, guarantee optimal storage conditions and inventory management. Patrick Ingenegeren, Senior Manager at TT Logistics, highlighted their commitment to accuracy and timely order processing, ensuring that the high expectations of modern clients like Halls and Jolt are met. Currently managing over 100,000 square meters of warehousing space, TT Logistics has proven its capability to handle large-scale distribution efficiently.

Ingenegeren added, “Halls is currently only available via renowned South Australian retailers, whereas Jolt can also be ordered online. We expect to also fulfil Halls drinks for interstate clients soon.” This strategic partnership has allowed Halls to reestablish itself in the market with confidence, knowing that the logistical backbone provided by TT Logistics ensures smooth and reliable distribution.

A Bright Future

The response to the return of Halls Drinks has been overwhelmingly positive. Consumers appreciate the revival of a cherished brand, and the combination

of nostalgia and quality has been a significant draw. Looking ahead, Halls plans to expand its product line, increase market penetration, and explore new growth opportunities while staying true to its heritage.

Cameron Ballard’s role in the revival of Halls is a testament to his expertise in brand rejuvenation. By honouring the brand’s history and adapting to modern consumer preferences, Ballard has successfully reintroduced Halls to a new generation. The journey of Halls from its 19thcentury origins to its 21st-century revival is a compelling story of tradition, quality, and entrepreneurial vision. As Halls continues to grow and thrive, it stands as a symbol of the enduring appeal of classic brands. The successful reintroduction of Halls not only reconnects consumers with a piece of South Australian heritage but also highlights the timeless value of quality and authenticity in an ever-changing market.

The Growing Role of 1D and 2D Barcodes in Boosting Supply Chain Efficiency and Productivity

As industries evolve, the need for efficient, accurate, and adaptable workflows is growing. Hands-free scanning solutions are key to streamlining operations, improving data accuracy, and ensuring compliance. These advancements are transforming productivity, addressing cold chain logistics, and supporting regulatory traceability.

Enable hands-free workflows that boost productivity everywhere with the RS5000x 1D/2D high-performance corded wearable scanner — from the warehouse freezer to the retail floor. Simply connect the single-finger RS5000x to your Zebra-compatible wearable computer to enable hands-free workflows across environments — from the warehouse aisle to the manufacturing plant floor, retail backroom, and even the freezer. It’s easy to use — simply plug the integrated cord into the host wearable computer to power the RS5000x, and it’s ready for work. There’s no Bluetooth pairing required and no need to purchase batteries or chargers, reducing the time and cost of deploying and managing hands-free scanning solutions. With corded operation, workers get uninterrupted connectivity and minimal latency, improving application response times and the user experience.

The RS5000x provides the features needed to improve workflow efficiency, data accuracy and consumer safety throughout your facility. With exceptional motion tolerance, workers can capture barcodes as fast as they can press the scan trigger, even if workers and the items they are scanning are moving. With PRZM Intelligent Imaging technology, workers can accurately capture virtually any 1D or 2D barcode — even if it’s scratched, dirty or poorly printed — or under shrinkwrap or frost. The red laser cross-hair aimer stays bright and crisp across the scanning range, allowing workers to easily capture barcodes in hand and up to 3 ft (0.9m) away. The RS5000x also offers the lowest operating temperature range in its class, able to perform flawlessly down to -22F (-30C). The RS5000x is also drop tested across the entire operating temperature range — a must for freezer use where extreme cold can make plastics brittle and prone to shattering on impact.

With the RS5000x, businesses are ready to comply with regulatory organisations around the world that rely on the large amount of data that can be embedded in 2D barcodes to improve consumer safety. For example, the U.S. Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) requires the use of 2D barcodes to increase the safety of the food supply chain by enabling the rapid identification and

removal of recalled contaminated and expired items. And the 2D barcodes on pharmaceuticals required by the U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) prevents counterfeit drugs from entering the supply chain, protecting patient safety.

The ergonomics in the single-finger RS5000x provide the comfort in all of environments. Workers can get a perfect fit in seconds — the quick-adjust Cam buckle makes it easy to make fast and precise adjustments to achieve a hassle-free fit on any size hand. They can switch hands easily with the convenient swivel feature, which provides the true ambidextrous operation required to prevent hand fatigue during a shift — and eliminates the need to purchase right and left-hand mounts. Workers in the freezer will appreciate the freezer trigger mount which fits securely and comfortably over heavy gloves — no pinching, slipping or rotating. And since standard and freezer mounts can be swapped at any time, the RS5000x easily adapts to the ‘right-now’ needs in every organisation. With removable and swappable trigger assemblies, organisations can give workers their own triggers and straps to prevent the spread of germs — and replace worn or broken assemblies right on site, maximising uptime by minimising trips to the service depot.

When it comes to durability, the RS5000x is built to last for years, ready for drops to concrete, bumps and even high-pressure hose downs. The metal buckle and durable nylon strap on the finger mount outlasts hook and loop fasteners, which easily fray over time.

Management of the RS5000x scanners is easy — users can use the same management tools that are already being used today. When the RS5000x is connected to a Zebra wearable computer, you can configure and change settings, monitor scanning performance and more on the Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM)/ Mobile Device Management (MDM) system you use today to manage all of your Zebra mobile devices.

In addition, with the Zebra OneCare Maintenance Pans, you get the comprehensive coverage you need for true peace of mind. If it’s broken, it can easily be fixed,

maximising device uptime and minimising total cost of ownership (TCO). Regardless of whether the issue is functional failure, normal wear and tear or accidental damage, Zebra will restore any scanner requiring repair back to like-new condition. And options allow you to tailor your maintenance plans to meet your business needs, for example, with ‘next-business-day’ replacement.

The RS5000x Corded Wearable Scanner enhances efficiency, accuracy, and productivity across operations. Its ergonomic design and durability help your workforce stay productive in demanding environments, maximising performance from your Zebra wearable mobile computers.
