NUTRITION AND FITNESS WITH TOM AND JESS

7 Reasons To Exercise (That Have Nothing To Do With Weight)

Most people who come to see Tom and me for nutrition/training have a body composition goal; 9 times out of 10 they want to lose weight. It’s a pleasure to be able to help in that capacity and we love nothing more than helping someone to feel better about themselves. When old clothes fit again, and the reflection in the mirror looks much more streamlined, it’s a great feeling. Surprisingly, or unsurprisingly depending on your health history and your shape journey over the years, most of the thousands of people we have worked with over the past decade plus are often more pleased about the non-aesthetic side effects that they experience as a result of regular resistance training and cardiorespiratory training. 1. They feel happier - happier in their own skin and in a better overall mood. 2. They live better - feeling more alive with fewer aches and pains. 3. They stay stronger - picking stuff up that they had thought was physically out of reach years ago. 4. They sleep deeper - and feel more awake with more energy throughout the day. 5. They think faster - exercise increases blood and nutrient flow to the brain. 6. They burden others less - the realisation that as they age, the healthier they are, the less strain they are on family and friends in the years ahead. 7. They inspire their children or grandchildren - kids are always watching and love to get involved. What better way to spend your time with younger generations who are at such an impressionable age. Having more energy is a big one. Tom and I truly believe ‘energy’ is one of the biggest markers of good health and a great life. Good energy is a game changer. Yes, ‘looking’ better is fantastic, but I would argue that feeling better trumps anything aesthetic-related. It’s also okay to have both. There is no drug or cocktail of drugs on the planet that is able to be prescribed by the medical industry that comes with the health and longevity benefits that regular movement and resistance training bring. If movement currently doesn’t make a regular feature in your week, figure out a way to make it happen, and it’s never too late to start. Pick a form of exercise you could grow to enjoy and gives you the endorphin lift you’ll grow to crave. Find an accountability partner or a team-based sport so that you are surrounded by a support network and other like-minded people.

Look at your average daily step count and try and get it close to 10,000 steps. Can you weave in a morning walk before the temperature gets up or a post-dinner walk when the day is cooler? Walk and talk meetings or the fold out treadmills whilst you work are becoming increasingly popular in the workplace for the health benefits that are becoming increasingly appreciated when it comes to keeping the body movement versus static. What are your thoughts? Do any of those 7 health benefits stand out to you and have you noticed these in your own life? Would you make any additions?
