CA’N DULCE CLOSES AFTER 17 YEARS
In June, Andrew, the owner of Ca’n Dulce took the difficult decision to close the door on his shop selling British groceries, cards and sweets in Sant Climent. Since it opened on 1st September 2006, it has provided all our nostalgic, favourites, especially at Easter and Christmas.
Andrew told us “Firstly, in 2006 there were 7000 UK residents on Menorca but now there are only 2000. Historically, they were more mature residents who were big card buyers. Today’s younger generation generally no longer send birthday cards. We were hit hard by the Pandemic and had to survive 5 months without deliveries or stock and with no help from the Government. Finally, Brexit has meant that a colossal amount of paperwork is needed to import products from the UK, such as Export Health certificates. We overcame some of these problems by changing our supplier to Ireland, however the product range is much more limited. You will see now that the shops in Menorca offering British products all have the same limited range. Pre-Brexit we could offer a personal, exclusive service, sourcing and bringing in products for customers in just a few days. This is no longer possible. I would like to take the opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to all of those customers past and present who have continued to support me through some difficult times and also the fun times too!”
Andrew and his wife are expecting a baby in August and he will take a break for the summer before deciding on his next move. We wish him the all the best for the future.
