CLUB MENORCA REVIVAL By Rose Edwards
Located on the south coast of the Island, right on top of the cliffs, is the restaurant and hostel Club Menorca. I have lived in Cala en Porter since my family moved here in 1996. Back then Club Menorca needed some TLC. Five years ago, the owner and his son finally took it over again. I got the chance to catch up with son Alex to chat about his experience. Alex is 32 years old and originally from Kent. He was marketing manager at Madame Tussauds in London for many years, although deep down, his heart was back here in Menorca. His Welsh great uncle had a villa here in the 1970’s to 80’s and he fell in love with the place as it reminded him of Anglesey with dry stone walls, but also with sun! He and his dad both live here now, as well as his sister and family and his mum and her partner. Club Menorca has been a big project, with two terraces and restaurants inside and outside. Alex could see there was an opportunity to make it something special. Boy did he prove us right! It is a family guest house and they have currently applied for hotel status, hoping to get a three star rating. With a fabulous location it is the perfect place for any celebration. In the past they have hosted weddings, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, and many other special occasions. Alex told me how they have already had two film crews using Club Menorca as a location for filming . A German film crew came to film for Love Boat and in 2021 Below Deck for Netflix. Although the season has only just started, it is already looking impressive with the rooms fully booked until September. Club Menorca has gone from being the abandoned building on the cliffs edge to an idyllic paradise. Alex told me about all the improvements they have done and how the list is never ending! He says it has been a very positive move, and he never gets fed up with the ‘wows’ you hear as people walk through the place with all its quirky original yet stylish decor. So, visit for breakfast on the cliff top terrace or lunch 80 feet above the waves, or eat your dinner with your own panoramic view of the beautiful beach of Cala en Porter. Don’t forget to book!! LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB
LADIES PROBUS LUNCH
Just a brief note from the Menorcan Ladies Luncheon Club this month; more news next time! We had a very enjoyable lunch at The Grill just near the airport with varied starters to share and a good selection of main courses and puds. This time wine and coffee were not included. Elizabeth had some excellent raffle prizes and although we didn’t have a speaker we nattered... In July we are eating at the Oveja Negra in Punta Prima, so look forward to seeing you all then.
There were 33 ladies at the lunch at Pan y Vino on the 15th June. We were seated on the terrace, as the weather was fine but a little breezy. Two new members Maggie Hatch and Debbie Bayley were welcomed by the President. The new card system worked well except for a few members who wished to change seats. We had a good conversation on our table about eye operations!! Noellia and Patrick the chef presented the food beautifully and there was a choice of 3 starters 3 mains 3 desserts.
