RED ARROWS RETURN TO MENORCA 26 SEPTEMBER 2023
It’s amazing! But it’s true that, for the fifth time, the famous Red Arrows aerobatic team of the RAF will be returning to Menorca and thrilling us all, old and young, with their incomparable air display in the famous Hawk fast jets. The date is set for 26th September and will take place over “En Caragol” between Binibeca and Punta Prima as in 2018. This year will see an 8 aircraft formation following some intensive training in Croatia and Greece to prepare for a more dynamic and updated display. Now in their 59th season the visit to Menorca will be following their display in Malta and before continuing to Gibraltar. So now the work for us begins, a good deal of planning and preparation needed by many, most especially Pablo Gonzalez who once again has agreed to be our Air Show Director, and for collaboration and co-ordination between the diplomatic authorities and the military authorities responsible for the Red Arrows. We owe a big thank you also to the sponsors, Fairline Menorca, Martin Betts amongst others, not to mention the indefatigable Ian Warren whose “list of things to do” already covers several sheets!
CA’N DULCE CLOSES AFTER 17 YEARS In June, Andrew, the owner of Ca’n Dulce took the difficult decision to close the door on his shop selling British groceries, cards and sweets in Sant Climent. Since it opened on 1st September 2006, it has provided all our nostalgic, favourites, especially at Easter and Christmas. Andrew told us “Firstly, in 2006 there were 7000 UK residents on Menorca but now there are only 2000. Historically, they were more mature residents who were big card buyers. Today’s younger generation generally no longer send birthday cards. We were hit hard by the Pandemic and had to survive 5 months without deliveries or stock and with no help from the Government. Finally, Brexit has meant that a colossal amount of paperwork is needed to import products from the UK, such as Export Health certificates. We overcame some of these problems by changing our supplier to Ireland, however the product range is much more limited. You will see now that the shops in Menorca offering British products all have the same limited range. Pre-Brexit we could offer a personal, exclusive service, sourcing and bringing in products for customers in just a few days. This is no longer possible. I would like to take the opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to all of those customers past and present who have continued to support me through some difficult times and also the fun times too!” Andrew and his wife are expecting a baby in August and he will take a break for the summer before deciding on his next move. We wish him the all the best for the future. D O N ’ T M I S S A N E D I T I O N , S U B S C R I B E T O D AY ! V I S I T: R O Q U E TA M A G A Z I N E . N E T
