Broome A season for all
Local photographer, weather enthusiast and kayak tour guide Richard Young talks about Broome’s various seasons.

Broome would have to be one of the most photogenic destinations in the country. Where the arid tropical landscapes with red soils and sandstone cliffs meets turquoise seas where the mixing of the tides operate 24/7.
The Dry Season
The first caravan driving down Broome Highway in early April signifies the start of the dry season. With the drawcard of 30-degree winter days, it kicks off the busy season right through until early October. Cool, dry air off the inland desert country clears the skies and delivers Broome’s landscapes into a kaleidoscope of colours at all times of the day. The Milky Way unveils itself at night, the monthly moon rise over Roebuck Bay attracts a big crowd and Broome ignites into all sorts of events and activities. Locals and visitors hit the beaches, bars and cafes, launch their boats, wet a line and hit up their favourite camping sites for another year. Life couldn’t be better.

The Build Up
All good things come to an end. Or do they? Going troppo, Mango madness or what’s known as the ‘Build Up’ is a hot, unforgiving but spectacular time of year. From late October into the new year the skies explode with inland thunderstorms. Early morning and sunset beach visits are a must and the complimentary daily sweat sauna clears the skin. Big tides and sea breezes churn the sea and bays into milky blues, and the colours really make you feel alive. The build-up eventually breaks or as many a local would say ‘the rain dome’ over town breaks and the first rains arrive and cool and refresh the landscapes.

The Wet Season
Speak to any local Broome person and often the wet season from mid-December into late March is a favourite time of year. The rains arrive, free lightning shows provide hours of entertainment, the excitement of an incoming storm sets the town's eyes to the sky. The colours of the wet season hit next level saturation as every corner you look or drive around is turned up. Free carwashes down every road after a quickfire storm. Surfers dust off the boards as offshore lows and developing cyclones send in line after line of waves along Broome’s favourite surf spots. Anxiety of the possible near passing of a cyclone is always high but comes with living along the edges of cyclone alley in Western Australia.
If I was to pick a season that was best ... I would say Broome is amazing in all seasons and if you get a chance, visit it in a few to really get the feel of this beautiful town and all the good vibes it has. Enjoy your stay. Visit richardyoungphotography.com.au

Experience the Journey from Shell to Showroom
A Broome icon, Willie Creek Pearl Farm is a national award-winning gem beckoning you to come and experience it.
It has been over 35 years since the alluring Australian South Sea Pearl brought the Banfield family, owners of Willie Creek Pearls, to Broome. The Western Australian family business has grown to include the multi award-winning Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour, historical Pearl Luggers tour and three stunning pearl jewellery showrooms in Broome. The business has also expanded into Perth, encompassing pearl harvest experiences and four jewellery showrooms. Three generations of family work in the business today, providing a personal touch across each location.
A Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour is a must-do experience while visiting Broome. This is the home of the Pearl of Western Australia, where the Willie Creek Pearls’ team sustainably produce the best pearls in the world; Australian South Sea Pearls. Gain an exclusive insight into the journey of the pearl in modern farming, from shell to showroom.
Experience the beauty of the Kimberley region as you journey along the rich, pindan track to the farm, via 4WD or an air-

conditioned coach with guided commentary. Upon arrival, you are greeted by the magnificent scenery at Willie Creek Pearl Farm, where the tides and nutrient rich warm waters combine to create ideal conditions for the Pinctada maxima oyster, the world’s largest pearl producing oyster, to thrive.
The tour takes you through the journey of the pearl, starting in the Pearl Oyster Nursery. Here, you will learn all about the delicate operations involved in seeding the oysters, before you experience a beautiful cruise on the calm, tranquil waters of the farm’s namesake, Willie Creek, to get a closer
glimpse of the oyster long lines — and if you are lucky, the resident crocodiles as well. Next, relax and enjoy a delicious serving of homemade damper and refreshments on the deck outside Harvest Café while you soak in the atmosphere and stunning scenery.
Each tour includes a Pearling Masterclass, which features a live pearl harvest where an oyster is opened, and a pearl revealed. The most fascinating aspect of pearl farming is that you never know what is inside until the oyster, after two years of meticulous care, is finally opened in a breathtaking moment, and the pearl discovered. For those unable

to travel to Broome, Willie Creek Pearls brings the pearl harvesting experience to you in the heart of Perth, at their Elizabeth Quay showroom.
A world-class attraction highlighting a unique and authentically Australian product, experience for yourself why this business was recently inducted into the WA Tourism Awards’ Hall of Fame. Willie Creek Pearls won gold to retain the State’s top tourist attraction title for the third consecutive year at the 2023 WA Tourism Awards, as well as a gold and bronze medal at the 2022 Australian Tourism Awards.
Further expanding their operations, Willie Creek Pearls is collaborating with MedTech company Marine Biomedical to supply
Mother of Pearl shell for the development of lifechanging medical products. A group of visionaries, including Willie Creek Pearls Chairman Robert Banfield, have invested in the incredible potential of using natural marine derived organisms as a substitute for synthetic materials in orthopaedic trauma medicine. Marine Biomedical now owns patented technology PearlBone™, which converts nacre from Mother of Pearl shell into a medical device that biomimics human bone formation. Leading with Culture
The Rise of KAFTA and the Women Behind It

In the heart of the Kimberley, a powerful movement is unfolding, one that fuses fashion, culture, and community with bold leadership and creative vision. At the centre of it is KAFTA (Kimberley Aboriginal Fashion, Textiles & Art), a vibrant platform redefining how Aboriginal creativity is seen and supported across the region.
What began as a grassroots runway show during the 2022 Broome Fringe Festival has grown into a regional force. Today, KAFTA is shaping a new future for Aboriginal designers, artists, and models, led by two dynamic women: Kartika Christophers and Rhiana Powers, proud Kimberley women and dedicated members of the KAFTA Core Team.
Kartika Christophers: The Creative Force
A proud Bard woman, Kartika Christophers is KAFTA’s Leading Creative Director and the artistic heartbeat behind its visual storytelling. With a background in dance, makeup artistry, and event management, Kartika blends performance with purpose. She brings years of mentoring experience through programs like Kimberley Girl, Pilbara Girl, Goldfields Girl, and work as Company Manager for Bran Nue Dae, one of Australia’s most iconic Indigenous musicals.
Since KAFTA’s inception, Kartika has led its creative evolution. From curating fashion runways to mentoring models and working closely with designers, she ensures every event reflects the beauty and depth of Kimberley identity. Her leadership is felt in KAFTA’s sold-out shows, inclusive casting, and the growing national recognition of Kimberley artists.

“We’re not just asking for space. We’re building it, and making sure it’s safe, strong and ours.”
Rhiana Powers

Kartika’s creative skillset is vast and grounded in cultural storytelling. From choreography and styling to makeup and show curation, she brings every visual element to life with care and emotion. Her ability to shape the mood and cohesion of each show gives KAFTA its unique heartbeat.
In 2025, Kartika added another title to her growing creative journey, Designer. Launching her debut collection on the KAFTA Runway, she captivated audiences with a bold showcase of cultural pride, strength, and contemporary style. The launch marked a new chapter in her journey and further cemented her place as a visionary in the Indigenous fashion movement.
Rhiana Powers: The Operational Engine
Rhiana Powers is a proud Yawuru, Jabirr Jabirr, and Gija woman from the Kimberley, and a powerhouse behind KAFTA’s operational and logistic delivery and strategic growth. As Event & Creative Director, Back of House Manager, and a key member of the Operational Working Group, Rhiana brings focus, structure, and heart to everything that happens behind the scenes.

With over a decade of experience in government, community engagement, and Indigenous development, Rhiana is known for her calm leadership, cultural integrity, and unshakable commitment to ensuring Aboriginal creatives are not only seen but supported. She is a passionate advocate for cultural inclusion and continues to champion the creation of safe, empowering spaces where Aboriginal people can lead, grow and thrive.
In the lead-up to the event, Rhiana works directly with designers to style and prepare their collections, coordinating every look and every model with precision. On show day, she leads a dedicated backstage team to ensure the event flows smoothly, bringing each designer’s vision to life with care and professionalism. Her strength lies in blending vision with execution in knowing how to hold space for others while moving the work forward. Rhiana is not just helping to run KAFTA she’s helping to shape a legacy where Aboriginal creativity, culture and leadership take centre stage.
“We’re turning the spotlights on and keeping them on for many generations to grow and move through this space and we aren’t conforming to western standards in fashion and art, we are building new foundations that include all.”

Building a Movement
With Kartika as the creative force and Rhiana as the operational engine, and backed by the KAFTA Core Team, they are doing more than producing events, they are building their own culturally safe platform for Aboriginal creatives across the Kimberley.
KAFTA now delivers year-round workshops in nine communities, mentors emerging designers, and hosts a signature Runway event followed by a pop-up stall that kicks off Broome’s dry season drawing locals, tourists, and national attention alike.
At its heart, KAFTA is Aboriginal-led, community-driven, and culturally grounded. It’s a space where Elders, youth, and creatives work together to share stories, celebrate identity, and shape a thriving creative economy on Country.
What they’ve built is more than a fashion platform, it’s a living movement honouring the past, celebrating the present, and creating a future where Aboriginal creativity is not just included, but centred.

Publishing First Nations Stories
Perched on a roundabout in the centre of town is Australia’s leading First Nations publisher, who has been publishing and selling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander books for almost 40 years.
Broome’s iconic bookstore and publisher, Magabala Books, has been celebrating and supporting First Nations stories since its inception in 1984, when more than 500 Aboriginal Elders and leaders met at a cultural festival in Ngumpan in the Kimberley and

decided an Aboriginal publisher would protect their stories for future generations.
Since then, Magabala Books has gone on to win Small Publisher of the Year in 2020 and 2024 and publish over 300 books, from the bestselling Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe, to Raparapa, the social history of the Aboriginal stockmen who worked the stations in the Kimberley.
“Magabala Books is Aboriginal-owned and led, and our goal is to nurture the talent and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices,” says Magabala Books CEO Dr Lilly Brown. “Every book purchased is an investment in Indigenous creative, cultural and economic futures.”
Guided by strong cultural principles and a passion for quality literature, Magabala is named after the Nyul Nyul, Nyangumarta, Karajarri, Yawuru and Djugan language word for ‘bush banana’.
Dr Brown says, “Our books are not just books. Every story published by a First Nations creator is the culmination of thousands of generations of knowledge, care and experience.”
Their books are not just good stories, they are also award-winning, with Julie Janson’s Compassion recently shortlisted for the 2025 Miles Franklin Literary Award.
Aside from the deadly books, Magabala’s bookshop is an incredible place to come in and have a yarn and buy local art and gifts. Stop by to share stories and take away something unique.

A lucky break saw the late William (Bill) Reed AM reshape the pearling industry in Broome.
The Allure Legacy
As a pearling pioneer, explorer and marine biologist, the late William (Bill) Reed AM, co-founder of Allure South Sea Pearls, spent his life in pursuit of nature’s most magnificent treasures. He dived some of the world’s most pristine coastal waters and journeyed to its most remote locations, always seeking the perfect pearl.

This marked the beginning of a remarkable new chapter. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Bill soon acquired his own pearl farm in the pristine waters off the Kimberley coast, ideal conditions for the Pinctada maxima oyster to produce large, lustrous pearls. His expertise earned him a reputation as one of the world’s leading pearl dealers, recognised with the Order of Australia medal for his contribution to the pearling industry.
After studying zoology and fisheries biology at university, Bill embarked on a career that took him across the globe, exploring the seas of Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Nigeria and Tahiti. In 1975, after selling his pearl farm in Tahiti, he returned to Australia and settled in Broome to consult on one of the country’s first cultured pearl farms at Kuri Bay, 370km north of the town.
After an injury left him unable to travel to his farm, Bill opened a small shop in a tin shed on Dampier Terrace. With no flooring and cabinets resting directly on the red pindan earth, Bill became Broome’s first official pearl retailer, an accidental shopkeeper offering Broome South Sea pearls to locals and visitors alike. The response was overwhelming and a new business was born.
INSPIRED by some of the stunning seascapes which line the coast of Western Australia, SEASCAPES features a curated collection of magnificent pearl and diamond jewellery which exudes elegance and beauty.
What began as a modest operation soon evolved into something far greater. Customers began asking for jewellery, so Bill enlisted a talented jeweller to create designs that would hero his extraordinary pearls. By the late 1980s, the business was flourishing and Bill invited young Perth jeweller Lindsay Youd to join him in Broome.
A second-generation jeweller, Lindsay had been captivated by the beauty of South Sea pearls. The move to Broome offered a chance to deepen this connection, and together with Bill, he helped elevate Allure into a destination for exquisite pearl jewellery.
As demand grew, Bill and Lindsay
established an in-house workshop above their newly renovated showroom on Dampier Terrace, bringing together a team of master jewellers to craft Allure’s couture collection in house. Over 30 years later, the heart of the business remains the same, dedication to craftsmanship, reverence for nature, and a deep connection to Broome.
Today, the Allure legacy continues with Louis Youd, Lindsay’s son and a thirdgeneration jeweller, who brings fresh energy and design vision to the brand. Allure continues to evolve while honouring its roots, creating contemporary heirlooms that celebrate the singular beauty of each pearl.

Intricately crafted with 18-carat gold and the finest quality South Sea pearls and diamonds, every Allure design pays homage to the brand’s coastal origins and its deep respect for the ocean. Each piece tells a story, of nature, craftsmanship, and enduring elegance.
Discover Allure’s exquisite range of South Sea pearl and diamond jewellery in their Broome showrooms at 25 Dampier Terrace, Chinatown, and Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, as well as in their Perth showroom at 316 Rokeby Road, Subiaco.

Admire artworks with a deep connection to the land at Black Stump Gallery.
Black Stump Gallery brings a wave of creativity to Broome and the Kimberley through contemporary collections of locally inspired artworks. Owners Emma Blyth and her husband Simon are passionate about the Kimberley, frequently taking time out to explore the region.
Having exhibited Emma’s own artwork in various galleries and pop up shops, as well as undertaking artist residencies at Cable Beach Club over the course of those years, they’ve been dreaming of owning their own gallery in Broome for some time. That dream is now a reality, with the duo extremely proud to have their own space, which not only showcases their own exquisite and contemporary works but also exhibits the impressive artworks of other local artists.
“We first headed up north on a camping trip in our old ute back in 2001 and could not stay away,” says Emma.
“I was absolutely blown away on that initial trip travelling the Gibb River Road and up to Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu. The remoteness and striking landscapes really were the most amazing experiences.
“The roads were pretty rough in the old Landcruiser! Camping under the stars with nothing but a mozzie net and a mattress and an old barbie grate to cook on. It was simple, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Whistling kites hovering in the smoke of our campfire, catching my first ‘Barra’ and cooking it on the coals whilst watching the full moon rise above the range. It was a trip of a lifetime and we still head out bush as often as possible.”
Located in Old Broome, Black Stump exhibits a wide range of works in various media and locally inspired Australian made art, jewellery, and gifts.

The original artworks exhibited at Black Stump are unique and characterised by a deep connection to the land and its natural beauty. The gallery brings together select artists who showcase their own interpretation of this captivating region of Australia.
“Black Stump products will always be made in Australia,” says Emma. “Proudly, this helps support local businesses and also reduces our carbon footprint.”

Timeless DESIGNS
Lush Designs has blossomed from a small market stall back in 2006, to an iconic jewellery designer producing precious, timeless pieces.
Originally a veterinarian, Julie Nicholas arrived in Broome in 2000, in search of something spectacular.
Julie fell in love with the stunning Kimberley landscape and spent her first year on the ocean exploring the Kimberley and its northern coastline. It was spending time appreciating the ocean that brought on her fascination and admiration for its precious, natural gemstone, the saltwater pearl.
Delving into the world of jewellery design, Julie quickly progressed from showcasing her pieces at a small table at the Broome. Courthouse in 2006 to annually attracting a flock of tourists to view the new designs for the year at her established business, Lush Designs.

Julie focuses on designing timeless jewellery pieces with modern bohemian inspiration, sourcing pearls and gemstones from around the world. Larimar and pearls have been used extensively in this year’s designs reflecting the stunning blue ocean colours and white sand of Broome.
Lush Designs’ first flagship boutique is open seven days a week right in the heart of Chinatown, next door to the original Sun Pictures. There is also a second larger boutique now open in the heart of Cottesloe on Napoleon Street. Both stores are definitely worth a visit and will not disappoint. You can also visit her online store at lushdesigns.com.au

Step aboard Willie, a well-known Broome icon and one of the last operating pearl luggers in Australia, as she takes you on a journey through the rich maritime history of Australia’s Northwest. This 67-foot gaffrigged schooner is a faithful reproduction of the traditional early 1900s pearl luggers that once dominated the Kimberley coast.
Built in Fremantle in 1985, Willie was crafted with immense care and authenticity. Originally intended for fishing the Pinctada maxima mother-of-pearl shell, changes to pearling licenses meant she didn't begin her work as a pearl lugger until later in her journey. Instead, Willie quickly carved out a colourful and adventurous career spanning over three decades.
From her early days as a commercial fishing vessel to leading scientific expeditions for National Geographic — including a 1991 feature exploring northern Western Australia
— Willie has explored some of the most remote and untouched parts of the Kimberley coast. She’s hunted for shipwrecks, visited significant cultural sites, and later transitioned into a surf charter vessel cruising the famed breaks of Indonesia.
In the late 1990s, Willie began her iconic sunset cruises along Broome’s Cable Beach, her elegant silhouette becoming synonymous with the golden glow of the Indian Ocean sunset. She briefly returned to her roots in 2011, fishing for mother-of-pearl and fulfilling her original purpose — outlasting many of her predecessors.
After an adventurous spell in Southeast Asia and a full refit during her time as a private leisure vessel, Willie was lovingly restored to her former glory. In 2019, she returned home to Broome, with her sails once again catching the breezes of Cable Beach.
Now operated by Willie Pearl Lugger

Cruises, she offers visitors and locals alike the rare chance to experience traditional gaff-rig sailing, with all sails heaved up manually, just as our forefathers did. Relax on board with comfortable seating, enjoy complimentary canapés, take a refreshing dip in the boom net, and make the most of the open deck bar, where chilled beverages are available for purchase—all while soaking in the majestic Broome sunset.
With a knowledgeable and welcoming crew, Willie offers more than just a cruise — it’s a step back in time. Expect an unforgettable sailing experience filled with history, adventure, and spectacular scenery.
Willie sails daily between April and August in Broome. During the summer months, she slips away to the stunning waters around Rottnest Island.

Watch whales, spot snubbies
Spot a snubbie or get up close with a breathtaking humpback whale with Broome Whale Watching.
For many years, the acrobatic displays of humpback whales and their incredible migration to the Kimberley had been kept a secret… until Broome Whale Watching was established in 2007.

For researchers and conservationists, Camden Sound Marine Park, located 400km north of Broome, has primarily been the leading regional focus — known as the ‘maternity ward’ or ‘humpback nursery’. From late June to early September, close to 30,000 whales embark on a long journey from Antarctica. Searching for warmer waters and an ideal place to mate, give birth and socialise, humpback whales spend their winter holidays in Broome each year.
In the early days, little information had been shared about the astonishing playful whales right on our state’s doorstep. Cameron Birch, owner and skipper of Broome Whale Watching, spent the last 20 years exploring WA’s coast. He was committed to sharing and developing this amazingly accessible marine experience with the community, building a new tourism industry in Broome.
Having worked in Coral Bay along the Ningaloo Reef in the early 2000s, Cameron encountered numerous whales. “I was keen
to investigate where these friendly giants were going next on their great journey,” says Cameron.
His curiosity coincided with the purchase of Sentosa Fishing Charters in 2007. With a fresh start in Broome, Cameron hit the ground running and discovered an incredible surprise — WA is home to the world’s largest group of humpback whales. It was time to introduce the Kimberley’s first whale watching vessel, Observer.
In 2008, Observer, a purpose-built whale watching vessel, was put to work offering whale watching and sunset experiences three times per week. Broome Whale Watching has evolved from this fast-paced adrenaline hit aboard, Observer, to a modern firstclass personalised service on the newly acquired Orcaella, a 50-foot catamaran. With breathtaking views from the top deck, guests are wowed in more ways than one. Whale watching and sunset cruises are now offered daily between the months of late June until early September. It’s no surprise that Broome Whale Watching has been voted the number one boat experience in Broome on TripAdvisor, for the past five years, a real highlight of any visit to the region.
Not only is Broome the destination for whale watching, it is also the home to our rare Australian snubfin dolphin. With his love for marine life, Cameron recognised some time ago, another unique opportunity to showcase the uniqueness of this amazing destination, Broome. The rare Australian snubfin dolphin is another hidden gem, found in Roebuck Bay.
“Only seen in the northern coasts of Australia, these strange looking dolphins with a melon shaped head form tight-knit social groups,” says Cameron. “They’re playful but at times shy and are a real favourite among our guests.”

“With its incredibly diverse ecosystem, Roebuck Bay is also a sanctuary for numerous marine life from bottlenose dolphins, turtles and dugongs to manta rays, sea snakes and juvenile leopard sharks,” explains Cameron. “It is a nature lover’s playground giving spectators opportunities to spot Broome’s spectacular wildlife.”
Experience Broome's marine wonders like never before aboard Zenysis, Broome Whale Watching's newest 42-foot luxury vessel. Join them for a memorable Whale Watching Sunset Cruise or Snubfin dolphin
tour, limited to just 14 guests for an intimate and personalised experience. Zenysis is also available for private hire, offering an exceptional setting for your next special event.
Providing wildlife interactions and unforgettable sunset cruises is just one aspect of a Broome Whale Watching experience. “As an ecotourism company, we do our absolute best to educate guests about our environment, contribute to local conservation efforts and helping local communities,” says Cameron.
“Working closely with Animal Native
Whales, Dolphins & SUNSET CRUISES

Rescue: Broome has given our guests and staff an opportunity to aid in the rehabilitation of turtles and be involved in their subsequent release into the wild.”
Broome Whale Watching has developed a holistic approach to ecotourism in the region.
“We believe this approach will leave a positive lasting impression for future generations to safeguard the whales and dolphins and protect our backyard,” says Cameron. Book online at visitbroome.com.au/members/ broome-whale-watching-charters

Snubfin Dolphin Cruise Whale Watching Cruise
as You As Unique
Celebrating its 27th
anniversary,
Galwey
Pearls
believes each pearl is as unique as the individual selecting them and will gladly guide you to find the right fit.
Glamorous, creative and vivaciously passionate about the Australian pearl, it was Lyndal Galwey’s love for the lustrous gem that sparked the idea to open her own pearl shop 27 years ago, knowing her daughter Prudence was essential to the plan.
With Prudence on board to champion the business, Galwey Pearls was born, opening its doors first in Claremont in February of 1998 with its exquisite jewellery designs on show.
Fast forward to 2005 and Lyndal and Prudence’s father David’s love of the tropics found them at home in Broome and unable to pull themselves away. This sparked the opening of their second shopfront taking over a brilliant space right in the heart of Pearlers Row in Chinatown.
Once again, Lyndal’s convincing nature had Prudence quickly in tow — equally in love with the magic and relaxed lifestyle of this distinctive destination and eager to give the new shop her all.
“It felt like home, getting away from that hustle and bustle of city life, there’s something captivating about Broome,” says Prudence. Realising Broome was forever, they closed their Claremont store and

expanded into the neighbouring showrooms with their growing collection, attracting visitors from far and wide.
Located on Broome Pearler’s Boardwalk, the Galwey showroom, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, offers a wide array of various pearl types, including beautiful black pearls from the Abrolhos Islands, Tahiti and Cook Islands and South Sea gold pearls from Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Galwey seeks out the most distinctive of pearls to create unique and stunning pieces.
“Our Australian South Sea pearl is unrivalled in rarity, quality, nacre thickness, natural lustre, size and value,” says Prudence.
“The array of possibilities offers a pearl to complement every skin tone — where gold pearls best suit olive or tan complexions and silver whites usually favour lighter or fair skins.
“The choice of pearls varies on personal preferences and budget, however, lustre and nacre — the very essence of pearls — should never be compromised.”
Each pearl has a story and a sense of place, and Galwey will always disclose its origins, accompanied with certificates of authenticity and classification.

Prudence says the Galwey experience is all about focusing her attention on each individual that enters her store.
“It’s about the experience. Nothing is a drama. It’s about the interaction with the client and to make it fun. We have just been fixated on that person walking through the door and really listening to what they’re after,” says Prudence.
“I had a lady visit the other day who fell in love with this mixed strand — mixed shapes and sizes of golds, greys, blacks, whites, silvers. She felt the blacks were a bit too dark, so, I went to the safe and brought out four silvery greyish pearls, some with a bit of pistachio in them, and it was perfect for her.”
Proudly recognised this year as a Platinum Member of over 25 years of the Jewellers Association of Australia, Lyndal and Prudence each bring their own unique flair to the Galwey brand and its designs, but they will always work with each customer to arrive at just the right piece for the individual.
“We believe that choosing your pearls in person is the best way to appreciate and understand their true beauty, as each piece is unique and individual.”

A Crocodile Legacy
In memory of the legend Malcolm Douglas, his awe-inspiring crocodile park lives on sharing captivating experiences.
In 1964, 23-year-old Malcolm Douglas and his friend David Oldmeadow left their jobs as stock and station agents in New South Wales and set off on a six-month journey around Australia. Before they knew it, six months had escalated to four years and left quite the impression on Malcolm, shaping his future to come.
Along their journey, the duo filmed their outback adventures, which was later used to produce their inspiring documentary, Across the Top, reaching record-breaking ratings for Australian television. Bursting with talent and a taste for adventure, Malcolm went on to become a conservationist and rescuer, as well as produce more than 50 documentaries and films for Channel Seven and Channel Nine.
In 1983, Malcolm transformed his experience with Australian wildlife into
something accessible for travellers to Cable Beach — the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Opening with six large crocodiles, over the decades to follow the park grew and became an internationally renowned tourist attraction and home to some of the biggest beasts from the Kimberley’s waterways.
Fast forward to 2007, the Douglases moved from their Cable Beach location, out onto the Broome Highway 15 minutes out of town where it resides today.
Visit the park and enter another world through the jaws of a giant saltwater crocodile. Constructed over several months in 2005, the giant fibreglass head is already recognised as the best example of its kind in the world.
Once inside, the park features 2,500

crocodiles, including some of the largest in Australia and a variation of five species of crocodile and alligators.
Run by Malcolm’s family, the park is open seven days a week, 2pm to 5pm, hosting its famous feeding tour at 3pm, daily. You might even get the chance to hold a baby juvenile saltwater crocodile.
The shop onsite is a treasure trove of unique memorabilia. The shop’s museum showcases an extraordinary display of Malcolm’s forty years spent during his famous adventure films. These famous films can be purchased in the shop, as well as a range of saltwater crocodile products including wallets, belts, hatbands and crocodile teeth jewellery.

With two expedition ships — True North and True North II — we go beyond where larger vessels can. Every day offers a new frontier to explore, with multiple adventures running simultaneously, so you never feel like a tourist — only a traveller in the truest sense.
Purpose-Built for Exploration
Both vessels are custom designed to access wilderness areas that others simply can’t reach. Shallow drafts mean we can nose right into river mouths and remote bays. And with six adventure boats on True North and five on True North II, guests enjoy multiple off-ship excursions every day — from fishing and hiking to scenic cruising and cultural discovery — in small, intimate groups.
• True North accommodates 36 guests in 18 cabins, with six adventure boats and an onboard helicopter for heli-fishing, scenic flights, and picnics in places no one else can land.

• True North II is equally refined, carrying 20 guests in 10 cabins, with five adventure boats, onboard helicopter and the same hallmark True North experience.
On both ships, our all-Australian crew includes expert guides, naturalists, and an acclaimed chef team — all dedicated to making each day unforgettable.
The Kimberley — Australia’s Last Great Wilderness
From March to October, we operate along the Kimberley coast — a vast, ancient region shaped by tides, time, and Indigenous heritage.
Guests witness the thundering spectacle of King George Falls, drift past the rising wonder of Montgomery Reef, explore dramatic landscapes like the Prince Regent River, and discover rock art galleries that pre-date history. Whether you’re fishing for barramundi, birdwatching with our naturalist, or enjoying a heli-picnic at the top of a waterfall, each day delivers something profound — and personal.
With so many adventure boats on board, guests never wait their turn. Everyone can choose their own pace, every single day.
Rowley Shoals — The Coral Frontier
In October and November, both ships voyage to the Rowley Shoals, a trio of untouched coral atolls 300 kilometres off the coast.
This is one of the world’s most exclusive snorkelling and diving destinations — with fewer than 200 visitors a year.
Expect kaleidoscopic coral gardens, swim-throughs, drop-offs, and drift snorkels through coral channels teeming with marine life. Warm, crystal-clear water and zero crowds make it feel like your own private reef.
More Than a Cruise
This isn’t a floating hotel or a sightseeing checklist. It’s an all-in, up-close adventure shared with a small group of like-minded explorers. No waiting in line. No rigid itineraries. Just the freedom to roam, the luxury of space, and the rare privilege of experiencing wilderness without compromise.
True North and True North II deliver the rarest of luxuries: time, space, and the freedom to explore.

Botanicals in Broome
Celebrating plants, and seeking purity, harmlessness, playful ingenuity and lovingkindness.
In 1994 the first natural, plant-based products were created from Ali’s home kitchen. Tucked away near Hidden Valley, a special place behind the dunes of Cable Beach, a deep exploration of gentle, plantbased skin care and aroma began.
Ali had always loved the power and beauty of plants and wanted to create a “path with heart”. Now with children at school Ali began researching and experimenting with making natural soaps, candles and lotions which didn’t irritate her sensitive skin. She wanted to reflect the untamed beauty of Broome and the wild Kimberley in her soaps, and spent many hours learning to craft these well, using traditional methods. Supported by her partner Smokey, the business was set up in 1995 to sell at the newly formed Broome Courthouse markets.
From a self-taught interest in essential oils and the powerful healing properties of plants Hidden Valley grew into one of Broome’s most iconic businesses.
Thirty years on it’s a modern and ethical E-commerce business operated by a dedicated team who still produce, package, and label all products in small batches in a dedicated facility at Harriet Road. Every product is created lovingly by hand.
Brightly coloured and aromatic handmade soaps and soy candles, reflecting the colours and spirit of the wild Kimberley remain core products. They make meaningful gifts, always appreciated. Using high quality plant ingredients Hidden Valley’s skincare range and pure essential oil blends are now the fastest growing lines. The apothecary range proudly hosts a range of powerfully effective creams such as ‘Achy Breaky’ for bruises and sore joints, ‘Healing Cream’ - an all-purpose healer for minor skin ailments, ‘Pest Off’ to prevent insect bites and the ever popular ‘Midgie Magic’ ointment to soothe insect bites – tried and tested by Broome locals for 30 years!
Hidden Valley blends essential oils as

“signature scents” for Broome’s most popular resorts and stocks an extensive range of essential oils.
Catering for all skin types, bodies, all ages and with no nasties, products make their way all over Australia carrying the love, the magic and the spirit of Broome.
We would love to welcome you to our aromatic shop or to the Saturday markets.

Our vessel Ohana offers the perfect space to unwind. While cruising, enjoy a 4-course breakfast and a 7-course sustainably sourced degustation menu, freshly prepared by our

At The Wharf you can enjoy the cool, air-conditioned interior seating, surrounded by lush indoor plants or take in the fresh air on the outside deck, spacious and shaded with a cool breeze blowing through. The modern bar with specialist spirits and house crafted cocktails add to the ambience and complement their Japanese inspired daily specials – including their delicious sashimi that is fresh and delicate.
We recommend you try the delicious, famous Barramundi Wings with Thai Salsa and the WA Seafood Coconut Curry, showcasing a mix of the best local seafood.
And you can’t go wrong with the fresh oysters, which are prepared five different ways – natural served with lemon wedges; wakame seaweed with a zesty soy; Kilpatrick with finely chopped crispy bacon; Japanese panko oysters with a delicious wasabi mayo; and unique to The Wharf is their ginger soy shallot sauce. Try them all to find your favourite.
The ethos of the restaurant is ‘The Way Seafood Should be, Fresh, Local, Simple’.
For something unique to The Wharf, we recommend you also try their new Sanbashi Izakaya menu - ‘SANBASHI’ meaning Wharf in Japanese – Tapas style plates to complement their carefully curated selection of sake, fine spirits & cocktails.
Try their modern take on their Sashimi Tartare selection served with Yuzu Soy Dressing, Yarra Valley Salmon Caviar, Pink Pepper and Shredded Shiso or the mouthwatering Sake & Miso Butter Scallops grilled with Sake, Miso Butter and chives.

Where Luxury lets its Hair Down

The tributaries and gorges wind below, where lush green meets a mix of vibrant blue and pindan red textures. Your first glimpse is as the descent begins, completing a 45-minute spectacle from Kununurra. You and seven other guests beam with anticipation, nudging your travelling companion, eyes darting with wonder in every direction with wonder.
Welcome. This is one of the world’s most remote luxury destinations. This is Berkeley River Lodge.
Nestled on Balangarra Country in the untouched wilderness of the Kimberley region, Berkeley River Lodge stands as a beacon of barefoot luxury and natural beauty from the moment we roll out the Kimberley red carpet for your scenic flight arrival. Champagne flutes clink as your feet hit the rusty earth for the first time – soon to be stained on your heart forever, and perhaps the soles of your shoes.
Only accessible by air, an experience at Berkeley River Lodge is truly wild, and truly special. Only open from May to August, the 18 private adults-only villas offer elevated dreamlike views over the colourful Kimberley coastline, ensuring the optimal environment for maximum rejuvenation and connection. Each villa features air-conditioning, a kingsize bed, dramatic glass façade with spacious deck, and an open-air ensuite – complete with rain head showers and a striking freestanding bathtub, allowing guests to soak under the enchanting Kimberley moonlight. A dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass façade invites the wilderness into the villa, with panoramic views from the new spacious deck, complete with new seating and day beds, perfect for settling in tune with the serene sounds of nature. It is designed for the ultimate relaxation.
The all-inclusive 5-night packages include a range of intimate wilderness touring. A

20-kilometre Berkeley River cruise is the signature guided odyssey, featuring towering gorges illuminated with colour, basking under the bright Kimberley sun – not a cloud in sight. Exhilarating hikes visiting waterholes and ancient Aboriginal rock art, bespoke fishing tours to reel in a famed barramundi, 4WD adventures with sunset canapes and drinks, Berkeley River Lodge offers a curated selection of experiences.
The aptly named Dunes Restaurant sits atop a pindan-coloured perch overlooking an untouched natural setting, with casual-yet-refined all-inclusive dining and premium beverages. International cuisine complements fresh Western Australian flavours such as marron (freshwater crayfish), giant local trevally and beef from

nearby outback stations. A selection of wines and beers also shine a spotlight on the culinary excellence of Western Australia, alongside brands that grace tables the world over. Signature cocktails reflect the extraordinarily colourful Kimberley coast, closing out remarkable days etched into the memory bank. Coffee beans are ground fresh as this last frontier awakens again, beckoning another day of otherworldly discovery and connection.
In 2026, Berkeley River Lodge is taking its wild luxury offering to new heights with the completion of an extensive 3-year refurbishment. The new-look offering is enhanced by the addition of a dreamy day spa to the all-inclusive package. Kimberley Spa is inspired by the untamed beauty and

raw energy of the region. ‘The Dreaming’ signature massage is a deeply restorative treatment using a signature blend of native botanicals. The iconic freestanding bathtubs are also receiving an overhaul, making a starlit soak the ultimate in-villa wellness experience.
These final strings in an unparalleled barefoot luxury bow add even more style and bespoke touch to your stay.
Every moment at Berkeley River Lodge is designed to help you reconnect with nature and rejuvenate your spirit in one of the most secluded locations in the world. As an offgrid property, there is a deep commitment to sustainability, ensuring the pristine beauty of the Kimberley is preserved for generations to come, while nurturing a sense of respect for the country.

Kimberley Serenity
Settle in at the Fitzroy River Lodge and experience pure serenity within this expansive property set amongst the bushland.
The Fitzroy River Lodge is located in the heart of the Kimberley, situated beautifully on the banks of the Martuwarra River (Fitzroy River). Earlier this year the lodge, surrounding communities, and a large area around the township of Fitzroy Crossing, suffered severe flood damage from the effects of Cyclone Ellie.
Due to the help from DFES, Australian Defence Force, locals, and multiple other agencies, the iconic destination is back open for business and looking forward to rebuilding sections of the property as needed — better than ever. The area is bustling at the moment, with tourism steadily getting busier and the rebuilding of the new dual laneway bridge boosting vibrancy within the area.
The Fitzroy River Lodge offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all travellers. The campground is open (at reduced capacity) for the self-

driver travellers. You can wander around the property, have sunset on the river banks, and simply ‘chilllax’ on fifty acres of natural bushland.
Expect to see amazing wildlife on the property — local birdlife for the ‘twitchers’, Wallabies enjoying the early mornings, and the odd large cow that has escaped mustering. The Fitzroy River is also a must-see attraction — whether at the end of the dry season to appreciate the expanse of the river, or during the wet season when it turns into a magnificent spectacle.
The spacious motel rooms enclose a beautifully refreshing pool, complete with sunlounges and sunbathing ‘decks’. Amenities and features include free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs, workspaces for remote travellers, and room service too.
New safari tents are now available (with or without ensuites) as well. Tucked out of the way, facing bushland — welcome the most relaxing end to your day in this special space.
A full bar service, a la carte restaurant, bar menu, 24-hour checkin, and conference rooms are all available to enhance your stay. The team have worked hard to get the property back to what it was and continue to improve it still. Come say hi to the friendly and welcoming staff, even if you don’t have time to stop for the night.

An Iconic Broome Experience

Camel riding along Cable Beach is an iconic Broome experience for good reason. Find out for yourself when you book Broome Camel Safaris.
Riding a camel along Cable Beach is something that should be on everybody’s bucket list,” says Alison Bird, one of Broome’s most respected camel handlers.
“There’s something special about camels. Their personalities seem distinct, wise, playful and engaging.”
Alison first encountered these fascinating creatures while working on a cattle station in the East Pilbara. “The station next door accidentally mustered a camel with the cattle,” says Alison.
“I went to have a look at him and it was

love at first sight. I had my hands on the railings of the yard when the camel came over and gently nibbled my fingers.
“I bought him and slowly got to know him and train him, all by trial and error.”
It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair between Alison and these magnificent animals.
After arriving in Broome in 1994 with just three camels Alison started Broome Camel Safaris.
She has slowly grown her herd, collecting and training camels that were rejects, orphaned, unwanted or mishandled,
which now happily carry her customers on Cable Beach.
As they watch the stunning colours of the setting sun, the shadows from the camels create a masterpiece on the sand. It’s the kind of magic that causes thousands of photos to be taken and many Instagram accounts updated – this is one of those moments that will never be forgotten.
Enjoy a pre-sunset or sunset camel tour along the iconic Cable Beach.

Trike Touring

Take a tour on the back of Roger Hockey’s trike and you’ll see the town from a whole new perspective.
Vvvvvrumph. 2000ccs of SCAT motor roars out of the Broome Visitor’s Centre car park and out onto Hammersley Street. A cool breeze whips beneath my helmet. Roger Hockey is in the driver’s seat of this custom-built trike, and he glides around the corner and down to Chinatown.
Roger is guiding me around the Broome Peninsula on a Broome Trike Tour. He’s driving a Harley Davidson hybrid, customised to carry three passengers. The third wheel adds a degree of stability and safety to an electrifying mode of transport.
We exit the roundabout and turn onto Carnarvon Street. Roger shifts down a gear and accelerates out of the corner. To his amusement, I reach for one of three hand rails running along the edges of the trike’s cushioned rear end.
“See those,” Roger says.
“They’re nicknamed the ‘oh shit’ bars. Just quietly, these trikes do
awesome wheel stands too.”
The trikes are a novel and exhilarating way of experiencing Broome. There are no glass windows or steel separating the view from the outer surrounds, and the life and breath of Broome whistle in the wind.
Slowing up to enter a bustling Chinatown, Roger launches into a recital of old Broome’s colourful history. Roger is well-versed in the town’s historical and cultural knowledge, and sprinkles quirky anecdotes and jokes – some inappropriate for publication – amongst well researched fact.
“See that Thai restaurant there, that was once the biggest brothel in Broome,” he says.
“Still today, the ladies do a wonderful job of servicing their clientele . . . with delicious Thai food!”
An eccentric businessman, Roger relocated from Perth to Broome in 1999 following a failed ostrich farming venture. He drove a selfbuilt trike nearly 2,500km and after acquainting himself with the history of Broome, launched the first Trike Tour 23 years ago.
Since then, Broome Trike Tours have traversed over half a million kilometres. Maintaining the trikes is no easy feat, and Roger’s been through five engines, three gearboxes, and relicensed unapproved modification on a limo trike – an eight seat motor coach kitted with a jarrah bar, champagne cooler, and surround sound stereo system –which is now back on the road.

We breeze pass the old boat building sheds – a relic of past prosperity – and head around the corner, past the homesteads of the old white pearling masters; Broome’s only Aboriginal community; and the ancient shell middens on Kennedy Hill.
Roger effortlessly navigates around all the roundabouts. Riding motorcycles is second nature for Roger; he grew up on a property in Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island, and for as long as he can remember he’s been surrounded by motorcycles.
“I reckon I was conceived on a bike,” he says.
“I grew up on 10 acres; my dad had a bike and we used to rip around the 10 acres. I bought my first bike when I got my licence at 16, and I’ve had a bike ever since. I’ve had 20 bikes over the years and I’m now into my fourth trike.”
Two hours after we set out, Roger concludes the tour beneath a shady boab back from Gantheaume Beach. He wanders around to the back end of the trike, lifts up a lid, and pulls a mysterious box from the rear cavity. Inside the box are four bush tucker liqueurs. Each is made from a native tree – boab, white currant, gubinge, rosella – and distilled by Roger in his own backyard.
Aside from the Broome Peninsula Tour, Broome Trike Tours operate numerous other sightseeing tours. You can wine and dine at the croc park; learn about bush tucker from native trees; or take a sunset tour of Coconut Wells, and he guarantees me each tour is as eccentric and unpredictable as the next. Experience a natural phenomenon that will take your breath away before indulging in a luxury houseboat stay.

There’s something magical about flying over the Kimberley coast. The colours are simply dazzling as they morph from sandy white beaches being kissed by an aquamarine ocean, to the deep, leafy greens of forested land, slashed by ochre roads. Soaring over the Buccaneer Archipelago, tiny islands punctuate the multi-hued ocean and mangroves seem to drift on the waves, they stand so distant from the shore. Blink and the scene changes in a slideshow of natural splendour. This is what you will experience when embarking on a journey with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures.
A frisson of excitement surges through the eight passengers as the seaplane approaches Talbot Bay, flying over rippled land that looks as if it’s been lifted from The Lord of the Rings. It feels like we are among a lucky few, as we glide across these remote lands. The Traditional Owners, the Dambimangari peoples, believe much of Dambimangari Country was created by the writhing actions of a female Woongudd Snake. The undulations in the landscape bear witness to this creation story.
And then we’re there, circling over the Horizontal Falls, whirlpools of white, swirling water clear evidence of the power of the tide as it squeezes through the two gaps in the ridges of the McLarty Range like air
Beyond Breathtaking

whooshing to freedom from the neck of a balloon. Sir David Attenborough wasn’t wrong when he described this as one of the world's great natural wonders.
This isn’t the end of the journey, though. On an overnight package with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, the aerial view of the falls is just the start.
The seaplane glides across the surface of the water, pulling up at the main pontoon, which sits in the middle of Talbot Bay.
Framed by a rocky escarpment with a mantel of greenery that tumbles to the water’s edge, it’s a rather spectacular place to land. Greeted with smiles we disembark, our excitement at an all-time high.
The rest of the day is packed with adventure, whether it’s taking a powerboat tour of the Falls; cruising down Cyclone Creek, watching for crocodiles lurking in the mangrove fringe; fishing for dinner; or taking a dip in the pool at the marine viewing platform,
sociable tawny nurse sharks gliding passively close on the other side.
As the day sinks towards the horizon, dinner is served. Staying on the main pontoon, there’s an alfresco barbecue on the outdoor deck with local barramundi as the star. On Jetwave Pearl, the luxury overnight houseboat, it’s a more refined affair, with a private chef dishing up a three-course menu to delight even the most refined palate.
Lulled to sleep in the private airconditioned cabin, morning creeps in like a watercolour painting, gentle pinks and soft blues heralding dawn. By the time breakfast is done, the cliffs have turned ochre, glowing in the burgeoning sunlight, providing a final spectacle as a Kimberley-style farewell.
Then it’s one last flight, taking you over and above; one final opportunity to witness the untouched beauty of this part of the country; one last moment to sear this moment into your memory.
This is what overnight at Horizontal Falls is all about — sheer wonder.

Laid-Back Luxury off the Beaten Track
“There’s something about this cruise… it’s the kind of trip where you’re treated like a mate, not a passenger.”
Diversity Charters is far from just another Kimberley cruise operator. Forget dinner suits, crowded decks, or rigid itineraries. Instead, guests can expect bespoke off-grid adventures, an atmosphere of understated luxury, and a down-to-earth crew who know these remote waters like the back of their hand.
Owned and operated by the Angove siblings, Diversity Charters invites just 12 guests at a time to explore the remote Kimberley coast - sharing the places they’ve spent years discovering, fishing, and falling in love with. This isn’t your typical holiday. It’s a behind-the-scenes pass to one of the
most spectacular places on earth, hosted by people who live and breathe it.
From the moment you depart, stepping aboard Diversity II or Diversity III, everything feels effortless. The boats are purpose-built for exploration - but don’t mistake that for roughing it. You’ll find luxe cabins with ensuites, beautiful shared spaces, and your own private chef whipping up fresh local produce (and probably your own freshly caught barra too).
There’s no fixed schedule - but there’s never a dull moment. Each day is filled with adventure, with itineraries carefully adapted to suit the weather, tides, and the unique

interests of each group. No two journeys are ever the same, making every experience truly one of a kind. One day you might be helming the tinny toward a secret swimming hole, the next watching the sun melt into the ocean with a wine in hand and bare feet on the deck.
Waterfalls crash down red cliffs. Ancient rock art hides in gorges. Humpback whales breach nearby. But it’s not just what you see - it’s how it feels. The crew, many of whom are family, have been doing this for years, they read the tides like a book, know where the fish are biting, and can steer you straight into the heart of the Kimberley’s magic.
Diversity Charters delivers pure adventure, with daily expeditions that keep guests constantly exploring. There are no crowds, no long waits to board tenders, and no unnecessary extras - just authentic experiences, warm local hospitality, and a whole lot of soul.
If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers luxury with your sleeves rolled up and a few fishing tales to bring home, this is your kind of cruise.
Diversity Charters offers 6-, 9- and 14-day Kimberley expeditions, plus other multi-day adventures along the remote West Australian coastline. If you’re after a Broometo-Broome loop, their 9-day itinerary is a standout.

ROADGUBINGE
One of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the world. Cable Beach takes its name from the cable which linked Broome with what is present day Indonesia. Stingers may be present during the months from November to May. Always check by asking the Broome Visitor Centre before swimming.
Broome owes its early beginnings to the discovery in 1861 of the giant pearl oyster Pinctada Maxima which led to the establishment of Broome’s pearling industry.
Believed to be those of a carnivorous species that lived 120 million years ago, the tracks are embedded in sandstone at the base of the cli and can only be seen at low tides of 2.16m for one set of prints and 1.46m or lower for three sets of prints. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO SEE THE GREAT WONDERS OF THE KIMBERLEY
The Kimberley isn’t just a place you pass through. If you do it right, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness some of the world’s most extraordinary, untouched natural beauty.
Welcome to Broome, where you’re currently a stone’s throw away from a trip like no other.
Just hours away, a helicopter awaits, ready to carry you to a picnic atop the magnificent Eagle Falls. Marvel at the cascades, glistening over the steep face of red rock. Further along the coast, the True North follows the winding Prince Regent River, carrying with it tonight’s dinner - whatever you manage to reel in, prepared by our team of world-class chefs.
Among the Kimberley’s grandest moments, the True North II pauses beneath the King George Falls - its bow close enough to step into the spray. Let the water thunder down around you as you take in the scale of it all.
Or perhaps you’d rather marvel at nature beneath the surface. In the Rowley Shoals, the reef becomes a place of daily discovery. Snorkel through still, turquoise waters, unearth vibrant coral or paddleboard until the sun sets into a dusky horizon.
You’re standing on the precipice of adventure - and there’s never been a better time to book.
