Broome A season for all

Broome would have to be one of the most photogenic destinations in the country. Where the arid tropical landscapes with red soils and sandstone cliffs meets turquoise seas where the mixing of the tides operate 24/7.

The Dry Season

The first caravan driving down Broome Highway in early April signifies the start of the dry season. With the drawcard of 30-degree winter days, it kicks off the busy season right through until early October. Cool, dry air off the inland desert country clears the skies and delivers Broome’s landscapes into a kaleidoscope of colours at all times of the day. The Milky Way unveils itself at night, the monthly moon rise over Roebuck Bay attracts a big crowd and Broome ignites into all sorts of events and activities. Locals and visitors hit the beaches, bars and cafes, launch their boats, wet a line and hit up their favourite camping sites for another year. Life couldn’t be better.

The Build Up

All good things come to an end. Or do they? Going troppo, Mango madness or what’s known as the ‘Build Up’ is a hot, unforgiving but spectacular time of year. From late October into the new year the skies explode with inland thunderstorms. Early morning and sunset beach visits are a must and the complimentary daily sweat sauna clears the skin. Big tides and sea breezes churn the sea and bays into milky blues, and the colours really make you feel alive. The build-up eventually breaks or as many a local would say ‘the rain dome’ over town breaks and the first rains arrive and cool and refresh the landscapes.

The Wet Season

Speak to any local Broome person and often the wet season from mid-December into late March is a favourite time of year. The rains arrive, free lightning shows provide hours of entertainment, the excitement of an incoming storm sets the town's eyes to the sky. The colours of the wet season hit next level saturation as every corner you look or drive around is turned up. Free carwashes down every road after a quickfire storm. Surfers dust off the boards as offshore lows and developing cyclones send in line after line of waves along Broome’s favourite surf spots. Anxiety of the possible near passing of a cyclone is always high but comes with living along the edges of cyclone alley in Western Australia.

If I was to pick a season that was best ... I would say Broome is amazing in all seasons and if you get a chance, visit it in a few to really get the feel of this beautiful town and all the good vibes it has. Enjoy your stay. Visit richardyoungphotography.com.au
