During the 1880s, at the onset of the pearling industry, Chinatown was a bustle of activity, with its opium and gambling dens and corrugated iron sheds tacked together to house pearling crews and noodle kitchens. For those interested in Broome’s unique pearling history, the outdoor Colonnade displays a pearling timeline, showing the journey of the Paspaley Pearling Co. from 1935 through to today. Paspaley Pearling Co. are pioneers of the South Sea Pearling Industry, and the pearls they produce here in Broome are known as the world’s very best.
