SWAN VALLEY LOCATION
Once in Perth, the Swan Valley is one of the most accessible day trip or overnight experiences on offer, whether by private car, tour, taxi, rideshare service, or bicycle.
FROM THE AIRPORT
The Swan Valley is located a mere 10-minute drive from Perth Airport Terminals 3 and 4 and just a 20-minute drive from Perth Airport Terminals 1 and 2.
VIA PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Regular train services operate from the Airport and Perth CBD to Guildford, Ellenbrook and Midland. There is no public transport from these locations to the Swan Valley. Transport arrangements, such as a hire car, tour, or bicycle, should be made prior to your arrival.

SWAN VALLEY
The Swan Valley’s history starts more than 40,000 years ago with the original custodians of the land, the Noongar Aboriginal people of the Whadjuk tribe. The Whadjuk people have a deep connection with the land and tell of a Dreamtime serpent, the Wagyl, which once travelled across the country, carving out the Swan Valley and the Swan River. They say the Wagyl still lives deep beneath the Swan River waters.
The Swan Valley is the second oldest wine region in Australia, and one of the very few within such close proximity to a capital city. Vines were planted in the Swan Valley soon after settlement, the first commercial vintage of wine was made by Thomas Waters at the Olive Farm Winery in South Guildford.
From small beginnings the Swan Valley has grown into a thriving wine region, with many small multi-generational family-owned wineries working comfortably alongside large corporate wineries.
Historic locations such as Western Australia’s oldest church, All Saints in Henley Brook, are denoted on the Swan Valley and Guildford maps with this symbol .
GUILDFORD
The picturesque village of Guildford was established during the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829 and today is one of only three towns in Perth on the National Trust register. Guildford is also on the State Register of Heritage Places.
Exquisite colonial architecture is just the tip of the iceberg in historic Guildford — there are also fascinating museums, churches, theatres, hotels, heritage walk trails and the oldest wineries in the State to discover nearby.

REGIONAL WINE STYLES
The Swan Valley's warm Mediterranean climate allows for a remarkably wide range of grape varieties to be grown, and wine styles to be produced, from Sparkling through to Fortified. Very few wine regions can achieve this level of diversity.
SPARKLING WINES
Using traditional Méthode Champenoise, the same method that produces Champagne in France, Swan Valley winemakers are producing delicious, creamy sparkling wines using varietals such as Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.
CHENIN BLANC
The Swan Valley’s most widely planted white grape variety. This region crushes about a third of Australia’s Chenin Blanc. Swan Valley winemakers produce some of the world’s finest examples of Chenin Blanc — crisp, dry styles with ability to age, as well as sparkling and sweet wines. Known for its delicate floral aromas, apple-like flavours and zingy acidity, Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with food.
VERDELHO
Verdelho thrives in the Swan Valley’s warm climate, producing crisp, dry wines with tropical notes. Some of the world’s best Verdelho is made here. Unique to this region is luscious liqueur Verdelho, due to the ability of this varietal to ripen late and attain high sugar levels.
ROSÉ
Light in style, fresh and floral, Rosé is perfectly suited to Western Australia’s climate and lifestyle. Swan Valley Rosé is typically made from Grenache, Tempranillo, or Shiraz.
GRENACHE
First planted in the 1860s, historically local winemakers used Grenache to produce world-class fortified wines. Today, Grenache is one of Australia’s most exciting varietals. Swan Valley old vine Grenache is highly valued. Used to create on-trend lighter bodied, easy-drinking dry reds and Rosé, it's suited to shared styles of eating.
SHIRAZ
The Swan Valley’s warm climate Shiraz rivals those produced in Australia’s best-known wine regions — plush, medium to full-bodied, and full of delicious dark fruit flavours. Renown for softness and length, supple and drinkable young, with the ability to be greater with time.
FORTIFIED WINES
Generations of Swan Valley winemakers have crafted exceptional fortified wines over decades. Often blended from multiple vintages, these fortified wines are among the most unique and complex produced anywhere in the world. Swan Valley winemakers produce vintage fortified, tawny, apera, and liqueur styles — rich, luscious wines made from Shiraz, Verdelho, Pedro Ximenez, Grenache, Muscat, and more recently, Touriga Nacional.

Swan Valley winemakers are having success with plantings of new varietals suited to the climate, our lifestyle, and the foods we like to eat — including Touriga Nacional, Arinto, Montepulciano, Nero d’Avola, Fiano, Mencia, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Vermentino, and others.

ROADSIDE STALLS AND FARM GATES
The first grapevines in Western Australia date back to 1829 with plantings established by Thomas Waters at Olive Farm in South Guildford. In 1840, table grapes were planted at Sandalford in Caversham. There was a steady increase in demand for table grapes during the 1850s and by the 1890s, the Swan Valley had established a thriving export industry.
Table grapes remain the region's largest commercial crop — their distinctive A-frame trellising distinguishing them from grapes being grown for wine. From December to March, you can enjoy a variety of white (green), red, and black grapes including popular new seedless and traditional vintage varieties. Buying or picking your own grapes is an experience locals love as much as visitors.
Year-round you will also find Swan Valley artisan produce such as sourdough bread, honey, jams, relishes, oils, and vinegars.
