sees someone who needs someone to talk to, she will make conversation with them and is good at keeping the conversation going. She’s very entertaining and easy to talk to and radiates positive energy.

Congratulations to our February POCS Student of the Month: Reyna Garcia! Reyna was chosen by her peers to be our new Student of the Month because of her easygoing personality and sweet nature.

A few of Reyna’s friends and classmates were interviewed and they all said how nice, sweet, and pretty Reyna is. Reyna respects her classmates even if they don’t do the same for her. She is willing to help classmates with anything they need or any work and is kind to all of them. When people are rude to her, she reacts well and responds calmly. If Reyna

Reyna’s friends said that she always sticks up for them, is always there to support them, and has their back through anything they’re going through. One of her friends said that Reyna stood up for them in a group chat where people were talking badly about her. She added that Reyna will let her vent to her if she needs someone to talk to. Another of her friends talked about how loyal, caring, and honest Reyna is, and that Reyna always compliments her. She said that Reyna will always give people her real opinion if they ask for advice.

Ms. Dolan (Reyna’s English/History teacher) said that she was moved when she saw Reyna at CHOPS crying because she saw a student all by themself. Ms. Dolan says that Reyna feels a lot of empathy for other students. Reyna

to be helpful to everyone and doesn’t judge or be mean to anyone. Her friends think that Reyna’s favorite thing about POCS is the diversity and the teachers.

A few of Reyna’s hobbies are cooking, reading, journaling, listening to music, going to coffee shops, shopping, and collecting records. Reyna loves doing her makeup and is great at it.

Some of Reyna’s friends believe that when others are kind to her, it inspires her to be like that to others. Plus, when she sees anyone being rude, it makes her want to be a better person and not turn out like them. Reyna’s friends think that models inspire her because she enjoys watching them and she loves fashion. Reyna likes being around her

friends because it brings her joy and happiness.

StaffoftheMonth InterviewwithMs. Dolan

Q: Why did you want to become a teacher?

A: I wanted to become a teacher to make a difference in students' lives and I wanted to provide students with an education that is accessible. I also wanted to provide a safe and enjoyable space.

Q: What hobbies do you have?

A: I like to go for walks and Hikes, I love to read a good book, and I like to bake.

Q: Do you like baking pastries more or meals?

A: I like baking pastries more

Q: What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

A: English I've just always been really interested in literature. In High school, I had a teacher that I connected with and was just really inspired by. I had her for English and Creative Writing. I think that really blossomed my

interest in becoming a teacher.

Q: Did you have any subjects that you struggled with?

A: Math was always a really difficult subject for me, but my brother really liked math so he would help me with my math assignments.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

A: It is my 5th official year, I started long-term subbing before I started teaching and so I've been in the POCS district for a while. There was an elementary school teacher I did a long-term sub position for. She was a third-grade teacher, she had left to have a baby. I then did a long-term position for a 6th-grade teacher who had a baby. After that, she moved to first grade so a 6th-gradePage

spot opened up at Jack London. I applied for that position and worked at Jack London for 3 years and now here I am.

Q: If you weren’t a teacher what would you do?

A: I don't know, it's so hard to think since even from a young age I felt like I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I used to love playing teacher with my friends when I was a kid. I think I would want to do something creative. I think it'd be super fun to be an event planner or own my own small business or something where I could still have a creative outlet. When I was younger I also thought about being a marine biologist but then I realized how much science was involved.

Q: What are a few of your favorite things about POCS?

A: I think the expectations that are set for students, I really like that it’s preparing you for the real world and high school. I also love all of the organizational skills that are taught. Like the planners just because I live by my planner I need to have something where I write down my to-do list. Another thing is the community. I love how it's a smaller school and so I feel like I've gotten to know most of the 8th graders' names that aren't even in my class. A lot of the 7th graders that I interact with. That they also offer a multitude of enrichment classes. I really believe that every teacher here has every student's best interest at heart and they really want all of their students to be successful, I don't think you always find that in every school.

Q: Since you are new to teaching at POCS what most stood out to you when you

started working here instead of Jack London?

A: I think that when you think of middle schoolers it's such a tough age right? I mean 12,13,14 like you all are just going through so much internally. It was also such a tough age for me. You couldn’t pay me to go back to middle school as a student! So I think coming in I was really surprised by how well all of the students support one another and get along. It's really cool to see the 7th and 8th graders hanging out during recess and lunch and interacting with one another. Even though everyone's not best friends I think people are pretty kind to one another and are supportive of one another. So I think that it was kind of a pleasant surprise for me coming into POCS.

GroundhogDay

It's the beginning of February, and that means Groundhog Day is here, which lands on February 2, 2023. If you’re familiar with Groundhog Day but not sure why it's a holiday, let me tell you why!

The first official Groundhog Day began on February 2, 1887, this holiday’s origin began with an ancient Christian tradition called Candlemas, where a church official would bless and give out candles for winter, the candles were used to represent the long cold winter. Originally it was called Imbolc, but as Christianity evolved and spread so did the tradition, and in some parts of Europe, Christians believed a sunny Candlemas meant 40 more days of coldness and snow. The Germans expanded more on this tradition by choosing an animal to

predict the weather. When it first started, it wasn't the iconic groundhog we’re used to today, they instead used hedgehogs or badgers to predict the winter. When the Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania, they continued the tradition but with groundhogs instead of hedgehogs/badgers, since there were plenty of groundhogs in Pennsylvania.

As you know, groundhogs come out of hibernation and if they see their shadow there’ll be six more weeks of winter, and if they don’t see their shadow early spring will come. The real reason they come out is to look for a mate, since mating season comes up in March, after they look for a mate they’ll return to their burrow again. The thing about the groundhog seeing its shadow has more

to do with the weather than the actual groundhog itself.

Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog in Pennsylvania, actually has a 30-39% chance of being right. If you were to ask which groundhog in all of America was the most accurate, it would be Staten Island Chuck! Who lives in New York City, and his accuracy is a whopping 80%, which is way more accurate than

Punxsutawney Phil! Which is very ironic since Punxsutawney Phil is the most well-known groundhog in the U.S.

2023PresidentsDay

Presidents Day is celebrated to honor the birthday of the first president, George Washington, and the birthday of the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. But sometimes Presidents Day is recognized as a day where we celebrate all the U.S. presidents' birthdays.

George Washington was born on February 11th, 1731 but it was moved to February 22, 1732, because back then a lot of people used the Julian calendar, but then they started to use the Gregorian calendar. Abraham Lincoln's birthday is on February 12, 1809. In 2023 President's Day will be celebrated on February 20. Presidents Day is always celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February. But, they only started celebrating Presidents day on the 3rd Monday after Johnson's Uniform Holiday Bill and so that American workers could have multiple 3-day weekends throughout the year.

Presidents Day is also an official federal holiday. Since Presidents Day is an official federal holiday, stock markets, post offices and government agencies will be closed along with all public school students getting a day off from school.

To celebrate Presidents Day people usually hold public ceremonies in Washington DC and other places. Sometimes people even eat cherry pie on Presidents Day because George Washington liked it. The only state that doesn't celebrate Presidents Day though is Delaware.

We have been celebrating Presidents day since 1799 when George Washington passed away but at the time it was called George Washington's birthday instead of Presidents Day. It also only became federally recognized on January 31, 1879. So, we've been celebrating Presidents Day for more than 220 years. The reason Britain started celebrating George Washington's birthday was as a sign of respect. Before we started celebrating Abraham Lincoln's birthday we used to only celebrate George Washington's birthday and it was celebrated on his actual birthday. But, after everyone started celebrating Abraham Lincoln's birthday they changed the day we celebrate it and changed the name to Presidents Day. Even though they changed the name to Presidents Day the federal government still officially calls it George Washington's Birthday.

LunarNewYear Celebrations

Most people celebrate New Years and New Years Eve but a lot of people also celebrate lunar new year, also known as Chinese New Year or the spring festival. The Lunar New Year started about 3,500 years ago. It was created in the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC). Its exact beginning date is not recorded (yet).

Here are some fun and interesting facts about The Lunar New Year:

● Back when this celebration started they would hold sacrificial ceremonies

● In 1949 Chinese New Year was renamed the spring festival

● The festival represents the desire for a new life

● The date is determined by the lunar calendar

● The famous holiday was added to the calendar in 1912

● This holiday falls on a different day each year and it even lasts 15 days

● In china each year is linked with a different animal

● The day of the festival they clean their homes to get rid of “bad luck”

● Children receive red envelopes with money inside

● This one is very well known but, lion and dragon dances are very popular

● Fireworks are set off at midnight at the grand festival

● The holiday was created by all different gods

● It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring

● The Lunar New Year ends with the “lantern festival”

There's a lot of history behind the lunar new year but not a lot of people talk about the celebrations, the food, the dancing, the singing, and so on. It takes a lot of time and effort to set up the festival and they only have about 15-17 days to prepare. Once the celebration starts it's pretty much all chaos. It might be crazy but also super fun, there are parades that go by, food cooking around the towns and shopping centers and kinds of people coming to visit and celebrate with their family and friends.

St.Patrick'sDay

St Patrick’s day is always on March 17 because that is when St. Patrick died. St. Patrick’s day is celebrated because of the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and in the year 1631 the church had a feast day to honor St. Patrick. St. Patrick died March 17, 461 A.D. St. Patrick got kidnapped when he was 16, and was a slave in Ireland. He was not Irish, he was British, and he wore blue, but It also celebrates Irish culture. If you celebrate, there are usually parades that celebrate it, people wearing green, green stuff, Irish music, beer, dancing, and shamrocks which are like this - . There are shamrocks when it is St. Patrick's day because St Patrick used the shamrock as a metaphor when he was introducing Christianity to Ireland. Some people will pinch you on St Patrick's day if you are not wearing green because it reminds you that leprechauns can sneak up on you and pinch you if you are not wearing green, because the people who celebrate wear green because it is from Ireland’s nickname, which is the emerald isle and also it is because of the green stripe in the Ireland flag, so basically it represents Ireland. The belief in leprechauns is likely from the belief

in fairies: tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. The people who celebrate will usually eat Irish soda bread, corned beef, potato soup, shepherd's pie, Irish coffee, and other Irish desserts. Overall, St. Patrick’s day is really important to the people who celebrate it and also to Irish people because it is really popular.

Valentine’sDay

On February 14th, people all across the world celebrate Valentine's Day. Many people exchange flowers, candies, and little trinkets with their loved ones. But do you ever wonder where Valentine’s Day originated from?

As far as we know, Valentine’s Day has origins coming from both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. Primarily known as a day of love and romance, Page10

UpcomingHolidaysCont.

Valentine's Day originated as a feast holiday to honor an early Christian martyr that was named Valentine Of Terni, which was also known as saint valentine. On February 14th, which was the day of his death in 269 AD, in Rome, Italy. According to many, The day became associated with love in the 14th/15th century when supposedly, the love birds of early spring came along. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this holiday? Catholic churches have recognized at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, Who were all martyred. According to one legend, the imprisoned Valentine sent the first ever valentine to greet himself with a young girl that he had fallen in love with. She was supposedly his jailer's daughter that had often visited him while he was confined in jail. Valentine wrote the first ever valentine before his death. It is alleged that he had signed off the letter with “From your Valentine”. Although the history of Valentine's Day and how it came about is quite unclear, All of the stories and legends to do with saint valentine emphasize his sympathetic and heroic nature, oftentimes depicting him as a romantic figure. Valentine’s Day or valentine’s greetings were very popular back then,

dating back as far as the middle ages.

GumRuleInterviews

Many students have expressed interest in changing or altogether DESERTING the ban on gum in school. Students feel the reasons for the BAN are OLD and IRRELEVANT. Many adults and supporters of the ban weigh in saying that the students have NOT shown they could be responsible with gum and would DISRESPECT the campus. We interviewed leadership students and here are their responses -

Q: Do you think the rule on gum should change? Why?

A: “Yes I think the gum rule should change because it could be really therapeutic for people and can help them concentrate in class if they are having a hard time and that's just a way to keep them concentrated and sometimes it helps me when I get anxious and it keeps me concentrated when I'm doing my work, but it's understandable why it's banned, I think it should be unbanned.”

Q: Do you see the gum rule changing in the near future?

it only is a rule in school it doesn't really change in public you can still put gum everywhere so I don't really see the point in it so I think it's not really gonna change anything.”

Q: If the gum ban was lifted what do you think would happen?

A: ”I feel like a lot more people would have gum. I don't think it would be like a huge problem. I just feel like people would just throw it away more because I think because we have a gum rule people don't want to throw it away so you find gum on the floor and people might suspect it if you throw it away in the trash there probably won't be as much gum on the floor and under desks and stuff. I think people would have it more but I don't think it would be like a huge distraction. I know that some people use it to focus better."

Q: Do you think students could be responsible with gum if the ban is lifted?

A:I think most students would be responsible with gum if the ban is lifted. Most students already have gum with them and you don't know it besides that you can see them chewing but they don't do anything with it besides throw it away when they're done.”

A: "I don't really see it changing, but Page14

THESUPERBOWL2023

This year's super bowl is going to be held on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in Glendale Arizona. As we know super bowl tickets can be priced pretty expensive, the highest their prices can go up to is $5,372- $34,528 The VIP seats can sell for even more, as they are sold for $81,800 Currently the teams that are in the playoffs are:

● Kansas City Chiefs (14-3)

● Buffalo Bills (13-3)

● Cincinnati Bengals (12-4)

● Jacksonville Jaguars (9-8)

● LA Chargers (10-7)

● Baltimore Ravens (10-7)

● Miami Dolphins (9-8)

Last year The Los Angeles Rams won, But this year as you see they are not in the playoffs for this year. It is also known that their head coach Sean McVay is considering retirement because he just started a new family and he is wishing the best for his new team but he doesn't want to go through the process of forming a stronger team. Some people may ask, what is the super bowl experience? Well, the super bowl is considered an NFL “theme park” The experience has many other games inside of the experience known as

something called the 40-yard dash. Many fans can get autographs from NFL players and get to take photos with The NFL stars, They also get to take photos with the super Bowl rings and the Vince Lombardi trophy. If you've been thinking of going to the event despite the super expensive tickets then maybe try and consider what else you can get from this experience.

Since last year's halftime show was SO popular in 2022. This year's Halftime show will be with Rihanna, This has caused many of the tickets to already be sold out. Last year's super bowl halftime show was Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, etc. This came off as a huge hit and hopefully, Rihanna will be able to do that too.

Entertainment UnderstandingMusic Genres

Faye Ton / 7th Grade

Music can sound like anything. However, every song you listen to is classified under a music genre. Music genres are used to classify a song and how the sounds fit into that category. However, some genres don’t necessarily “classify” a song’s sound. For example, pop music is an example of this. What makes a song a “pop” song is solely based on the popularity of the song. If the song is charting well, getting many streams, and is trending on social media, that song is considered a “pop” song. An example of this is Ariana Grande’s song ‘thank u, next’, the song is considered to be an R&B song and has elements of trap music. However, some genres that have the suffix ‘-pop’ at the end are not necessarily popular songs. These are called “pop subgenres/microgenres”. An example of a pop microgenre is hyperpop, most hyperpop songs aren’t necessarily “popular” by textbook definition. Hyperpop has elements of snare drums, earworm beats, and maximal sounds. The easier way to describe the hyperpop soundscape is “pots and pans” music. Examples of

popular hyper pop artists include Charlie XCX, SOPHIE, and CMTEN. Another genre that is also described as “pots and pans” music is experimental music (it can also be considered “noise music”).

Experimental music is music that uses different sounds and instruments and puts them together all in one song, pushing the existing boundaries of genre definition. Artists that have experimented with this genre are Radiohead, Björk, and NCT 127. Speaking of NCT 127, even though they are known for their noisy, experimental, and distinct sound, most of their songs are based on the R&B genre. I may be [a little] biased toward this genre but I do believe it’s one of the more unique and flexible genres out there. R&B stands for ‘Rhythm and Blues', it originated in the 1940s in African-American communities, deriving from jazz, folk, gospel, and traditional blues. Some R&B artists include Tinashe, Kehlani, and SZA. R&B is considered one of the more flexible genres to me because of how many subgenres it has, besides being a subgenre, you can still tell it’s R&B. One of these subgenres include 2000s pop-R&B, it was one of the more popular genres in the 2000s.

Page16

EntertainmentCont.

Another genre that has been listened to many times in the early 2000s/late 90s is UK garage. UK garage originated in England, inspired by garage house, and has elements of dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. The genre is most notable for its drum hits, synths, keyboard sounds, and acoustic instruments. Some artists of this genre include PinkPantheress, MJ Cole, and BÉBE YANA. The purpose of this article is for you to understand the music you are listening to. However, there are way more genres than the ones included in this article. Just know that there are way more genres out there.

15, 2023, this is also the release date. The movie will be based on: After years of neglect from Winnie´s childhood bestie, Christopher Robin, Winnie and Piglet eventually turn more and more feral, violent, and desperate as they had relied on Robin. Sadly, we will not see Tiger or any other animal character in this movie. This movie is kind of like the Scream movie. It's kind of an old-based horror movie but still fun at the same time.
