MESSAGE FROM TEAM
Looking back on 2022, it becomes clear that the North Shore Culture Compass is becoming the community cultural hub that we all aspired to when we first met to discuss in 2016.
We see assets added regularly, but also lots of opportunities to add more organizations and stories and annual events as the cultural scene on Vancouver’s North Shore is as dynamic as ever.
We’re learning that the online map and the listings of cultural assets is just the beginning. This growing database and dynamic cultural inventory inspires activations, partnerships, events, educational programmes.... and we’re only just getting started!
Thank you to the Advisory Committee who contributed ideas, expertise, and suggestions as we developed the cultural mapping project into the North Shore Culture Compass. Thank you to Tsitsayxemaat Rebecca Duncan for sharing her perspective and knowledge from her Squamish Nation family and connecting us to the community since we started on this journey.
The following pages provide an overview of 2022 for the North Shore Culture Compass, as we continue to work together to build and strengthen this online map for the community, by the community.

NAVIGATORS EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Using the North Shore Culture Compass, the Navigators Education Programme connects educators and teachers to ideas and resources to engage students in learning about the culture, heritage, history, geography and diversity of Vancouver’s North Shore. The free, downloadable guide is suitable for in-class or outdoor learning, developed for grades 6-12 within BC curriculum, with many activities adaptable for younger ages and groups.
2 streams currently available:
1 - Guide (limited printed copies available at North Van Arts and pdf version for download) for Secondary Level, supporting BC curriculum. Guide includes activities using the North Shore Culture Compass following the four points theme of people, places, time, stories. Activities may be adapted for other ages, groups.
2 - After School Art classes , fun activities to discover local culture, for ages 8-11. Place-based visual art activities inspired by public art.
In 2022, Navigators became a partner of Esri Canada Partners in Education programme. Esri Canada’s programme supports educators and organizations focused on working with K-12 youth with free ArcGIS software to create maps and StoryMaps. They also provide free training and resources to learn how GIS can be used to enhance student learning and engagement while promoting critical thinking and spatial problem solving skills.

DATA INSIGHTS
Culture Compass Data Insights help strengthen the cultural sector on the North Shore by informing planning, programming, and marketing.
Data Insights has 3 components:
Audience maps - created using postal code information collected from an organization’s audience Community Snapshots - compiled using demographic information from Statistics Canada and Environics
Local Area Profiles - compiled by layering the audience maps and organizational location with statistical information
Knowing who a cultural asset is serving is helpful for planning and important to allow an organization to adapt and reflect the communities they serve by offering programs that are relevant and inclusive. The findings from Data Insights can be used to plan activities, programming, and events, decide where to concentrate marketing and outreach efforts, inform pricing or fee structures, or to support funding applications and augment reports to funders and sponsors, to best engage with and serve your community.

SHORE CULTURE COMPASS
Inspired by content on the North Shore Culture Compass, we create StoryMaps using a tool available to us through Esri, the platform that hosts the Culture Compass.
ArcGIS StoryMaps allow us to create immersive stories by combining text, interactive maps, images and other multimedia content, shareable through a link or embedded in a website.
We have created StoryMaps to accompany art and historical exhibitions, interpretive zones showing salmon conservation themes, and online Treasure Hunts.
Partners we have worked with include: The Coho Society, mapping salmon conservation interpretive zones Diving In: Turning Trash Into Treasure, environmental art campaign by the Sea to Sky Arts Council Alliance (Pemberton Arts Council, Arts Whistler, the Squamish Arts Council, Lions Bay Arts, The Hearth Arts on Bowen), West Vancouver Arts Council, and North Van Arts) The Shipyards: Then and Now with MONOVA, allowing visitors to the museum exhibition to visualize the area interactively
You Are Here Calendar StoryMaps feature the places that inspired the art in the calendar and art cards, and share more information about the artists, beyond what is included in the calendar.

As a fundraiser for the North Shore Culture Compass, the calendars sell for $20 each at 8 vendors across the North Shore. Since 2021 we also produce 5’ x 7’ folded art cards with the images, sharing the profit from card sales with the artists. Different from calendars specific to the year, art cards are timeless, and continue to sell as long as limited edition inventory remains. 1,000 calendars printed for this fundraiser with exhibition opportunities at various locations for the public to view the featured works of art in person.
