North Van City Mosaic Project

Phase one of this project was about creating a digital mosaic from images of COVID-19 Stories.

The online project ran from October 2020 to October 2021.

The purpose was to inspire others by sharing their experience of resiliency, cooperation, and hope and to create a legacy for our communities.

The North Van City Mosaic is a community public art project developed by the members of the Mayor’s Healthiest Small City Social Resiliency Collective, with phase one facilitated by local visual artist Sandrine Pelissier and expressive art therapist Sophie Babeanu, and phase two's public art piece created and executed by visual artist Blake Williams.

The North Van City Mosaic is a legacy piece that used artistic expression to understand and articulate the effects of COVID-19. Phase one invited the public to share their personal COVID-19 stories through words and images on the project's website, and was open to anyone who lives, works, or plays in the City of North Vancouver. Each of the individual art pieces submitted were combined to create a digital mosaic image of hands forming a heart shape, with North Vancouver's Shipyards District in the background.

The digital mosaic created a focal point where people could share a ‘common’ thought, provoke conversation, share memories, and experience multi-generational interactions. This book documents the stories and artworks submitted through phase one of the project.

Community members were invited to participate in the mosaic project either by submitting their artwork online or by filling out a paper form. Paper submission forms could be found in community and resource centers around the City of North Vancouver. Children and youth programming, including at local schools and in summer camps, incorporated the project into their lesson plans.

The digital mosaic submission form offered participants the option of providing their age. While some participants remained anonymous, others offered personal information, which provides insight into the demographic of those who engaged with the project.

Sandrine and Sophie Welcome to the North Van City Mosaic ! The North Van City Mosaic welcomes everyone who lives, works, or plays in the City of North Vancouver to be a part of this community project. We are interested in knowing more about your experience during COVID-19.

S.P. During confinement, it was surprising to realize what I was missing the most. I was missing the in person yoga classes, going to the gym, going to a restaurant or going to a coffee. Even if I was not necessarily talking to people at a class, the gym or the coffee, I liked the idea of being in a busy place, surrounded by other people, the possibility of smiling to someone or just engaging in small talk. Confinement made me realize how much we need a community around us to feel good.

S.P. It is nice to see hearts pop up in many ways all over the City, or even walking in a park.

Sometimes it makes me think that it is when you are going through something challenging as a community that you start to see more empathy. When everything seems to goes well, it is easier to stay all focused on our own lives and well being, even though we know that some people are going through tough times with or without Covid.

As much as confinement and the new way of life in times of Covid can be frustrating and making me anxious, I am lucky that it hasn't changed my life completely so far. I can still work and stay in contact with my friends even just through computer and messages. It is different for my daughters who were just starting their post high school life, being excited to leave the house and experience the student life. All their plans have been postponed or modified. I also think about all the high school graduates who had a very different experience this year.

S.P. To keep my mind occupied and to have a long term project that I can look forward to, I decided to learn Korean with an app on my iPhone and make the project of travelling to South Korea in a few years when we hopefully get back to a normal situation.

It will at least take me a few years to have a very basic knowledge of the language so it works well as a long term goal :) S.B. Singing in a choir happens to be a very dangerous activity. Zoom singing kept me sane, despite all the technical challenges. I am nevertheless looking forward to meeting my singing friends in a real room.

Sonia Datt I have gone from someone whose only form of exercise was walking bus stops to now someone who walks the neighbourhood trails and enjoying my surroundings daily.

S.B. Finishing knitting projects, starting new ones, getting to slow down and allow myself to take the time to do and to make things, even undoing and redoing them. I knitted more than ever. I now have a covid sweater and a covid scarf.

Anonymous I loved to listen to the song "This will be our year" by the Zombies during Covid-19. It was a nice reminder that we will feel in control of our time once again and all the hard times will come to an end.

Cecilia This pandemic has been the opportunity to reflect on my priorities, where I have spent all my energy in the past, what has worked, what doesn't anymore and to take the time to reconnect with the magic around us.

Sharon Quirke Our two year old black lab, Rori (Aurora) wrote a personal email to a big airline company and signed off with, "Wags". She was asking for a refund for a cancelled flight to the northern Quebec village of Kangiqsuallujjuaq, where her master was to do a medical apprenticeship.

The trip was cancelled when the sponsoring doctor fell ill. The airline replied that they would neither confirm nor deny that Rori's intervention had any influence on the enclosed refund-in-full, but they did ask that she be given extra pats and biscuits from the CEO of the company!

L.P. I removed most of so called "social media" from my distractions a couple years ago.

During covid, I decided to add the news apps to the mix. Some say I live in a bubble, but the way I look at it, social media and news is the actual toxic bubble that is badly infected with concentrated covid and trump news. Removing these from my life has freed me from unnecessary worries and misinformation, and allowed to improve my real in-person connections and community life.

Ivan Doumenc Choir 2.0 ! Our local North Shore choir has struggled to continue its activity during Covid. We tried Zoom. It was not optimal... So we found a compromise. A small group of us meets every week on someone's deck along with the choir director. We sing together live, and we Zoom that to the rest of the choir. It seems to be working, and it's a lot of fun actually!

Katie Rodgers During the Covid pandemic early months as we sheltered in place, my kids and I walked through the surrounding woods several times a day. I began to picture these stumps in other colours, with personalities and moods, and to think of them as a symbol of hope for growth and regeneration.

Some of these spectacular nurse stumps and logs in the Seymour Valley are around 800 years old.

This time sparked a new series of paintings that I call the Regeneration Series. Here is one of the pieces.

S.N. During lockdown, I would wake up early just to walk the dog in the light of the sunrise. I didn't have access to that kind of time while working, and the ritual allowed me to connect to the natural rhythms of the day.

After, I would play music while I sat with my dog in the golden light and drink my coffee. Now that I'm back at work and am even busier than before, sitting and having coffee to music with my dog is the only thing I've managed to keep from my COVID routine, and it feels very precious.

Sarah Barr My family started a wee band so we could play for my choir's online cabaret. It started with just a piano and some singing. Then the electric guitar joined in and the next thing we knew we had a microphone with a stand and two amps in our living room.

Monica Gewurz Burgundy Calm was created during isolation and is meant to stimulate the viewer's imagination, provoke questions and ideas, inspire action, and offer hope for the future.

Experience some joy and inspiration in this time of social distancing and isolation by experiencing art together. It was inspired by the ocean's atmosphere during a storm and echoing the feelings I had during the COVID pandemic where uncertainty prevailed. The feeling of uncertainty during the COVID 19 made me feel I was going through one of life's biggest storms or what seemed like a black hole, and that we were not going to experience a sunny day for a long time. It also made me feel as I was a small piece of cork floating in the vastness of the ocean not knowing when the storm will strike and for how long. This painting also portrays a sense of resilience and hope to pull through together with time things will improve, we are all hopeful that this pandemic will dissipate and pass as a storm in the ocean.

S.P. Like many of us, I am feeling more stressed with the uncertainty of the current situation. Social isolation is difficult even for an introvert like me:).

My dog Java has proven to be great for emotional support. He forces me to go outside a few times a day, even when the weather is not good and I just feel like staying inside. He watches Netflix with me and is probably getting even more cuddles than he used to. I also find it funny to think that his life has not changed and that he is blissfully unaware of what is going on.

Kanata Hanawa I took this picture at Lonsdale Quay, North Vancouver. I'm from Japan which means international student. When I lived in Japan, I have never seen this view. I know writing a name at the place is for their memory, but I don't have any idea about this when I saw it the first time; thus, it was interesting for me. I like this culture, and I thought I want to take a picture a lot.

Cherie Kazemi Lockdown was a very hard time for me and I had to go through a hard time, but playing the piano was always a nice hobby for me.

Before lockdown, I didn't have much time to practice and I had to work on a piece for two or three weeks to play it neatly, but during quarantine, I got the chance to play every day and improve my playing skills. It was a great opportunity for me because I got to play in front of my family and also give them a good feeling with the songs I play.

Samantha Newton During lockdown, people were comparing some of the sacrifices and hardships of COVID-19 to World War Two. It made me think of the story my Grandma used to tell me about that time, how gas was rationed and no cars were on the road, so she biked across the Lions Gate Bridge all the way to Deep Cove. She never talked about how the war took the life of her brother, but she repeated that story often. I wonder if that memory made her feel stronger or happier. It made me think about what I want to remember from this period, and the stories I'll share with my family.

It made me feel close to her and appreciate her ability to hold on to the smaller moments that make up the best parts of life.

Teresa Frolek Beginning during lockdown early in 2020, I began stitching clothing using recycled textiles and vintage remnants. This is coat # 5 in my Covid collection.

Virginia D. My creative project during COVID is Hearts of Cloth about my journey through dance. I experienced confinement, chaos but also calm. Although I dance solo, there's team of people that have supported me through this project. Immense gratitude overwhelms me as I see communities working together to adapt to the new reality. Thank you to all the health care and front line workers for keeping us safe.

Rex Chean My image is about the time that I just got out of quarantine in school and they have a mandatory activity that students must go if they are out of quarantine on that day. That was quite a good day because I had not felt and breathed in fresh air for so long.

So, it was the best day for me after the quarantine.

T.S. NGUYEN This picture is about one of my experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. For us people who have to suffer from the consequences of Covid-19 at the time, it seems to last forever and we all have to adapt to it. In this picture, we all have to wear a mask in order to prevent the virus from spreading around the community. It has always been a torturous pain wearing a mask for such a long time every day.

Gigi S. 'Way Back Home' is the word I would use to describe this image. The dim light of the street with the stellar night in the winter reminded me of the time I used to walk back and forth, passing through this street, the street where I would not know when to go back again. It's been 2 years since then, but my vision and memory of my body and soul still recognized the intensive movement of my leg and the scent of wind that blowing over my body when I walked.

Even though my body did not present, my heart and my soul were carved by this memorable scene.

Yejeena Xu During the covid-19 I went back to my home country starting from the late march to September 1st. It is world's hard time but I think I had a really nice time with my family and friends back in my country. Forgot to add my home country is China, Shanghai. Our family is big fan of traveling but now due to the virus we can only travel in china. We just planed a long trip for "one month trip" with other families. We went to 5-6 different cities. The longest time we drive is 1730kilometers one night with RV car. And this picture was when we were on yulong snow mountain. Which was altitude nearly 5000.

Molly B. Ever since covid19 began I became a bit overwhelmed/ stressed about staying home and social distancing. Somedays felt repetitive because of staying in one place for a long amount of time and not meeting friends.

However, playing board games and especially solving puzzles with my family made me feel energized and ready to take on the virus by staying home. This specific puzzle turned my boring days of quarantine into days that are filled with special memories with my family.

Amy Zhao During the COVID- 19 pandemic, my family and me went to the Cates Park for crabbing. We brought fishing gears, bait, and tools for measuring. However, crabbing was not as easy as I thought, it was hard to throw the fishing gear further because we were not professional.

We had gotten many crabs, but we had to put them back into the water because they were too young and small. At the end of the day, we had gotten a few crabs and I thought crabbing was so interesting! Also, don't forget to take a picture of the sunset because the scenery could be fantastic!

Holden Mcgroin This is an expressionist piece. It was inspired in the view of personal inner turmoil that some of us may go through more so than usual as a result of the increase in restrictions we face daily. I chose a monochromatic pencil style to express the dramatic nature of the piece.

The two reciprocal pointed question marks represent the uncertainty of what's to come.

The hearts represent the longing for love and human connection.

Ivan Zlunitcyn The time when I was on selfisolation, I was at my school - in Bodwell. Many memories are connected with my school, and in that case, self-isolation. I spent this time at school with my friends and we experienced this time together. I still keep memories of what happened to me in this school during the coronavirus. I still remember that time.

Jiangshan LI I slept a lot during the Covid-19 break out time. The time was missed up, I always stay up late and woke up late, which was bad. I also ate a lot of snacks.

Sometimes I work out, I did push up and set up, my body is still kept in shape.

S. P. When the pandemic hit I was unable to work on larger paintings or projects because of the stress.

I got back to working on simpler things like drawings, with simpler materials like colored pencils. I always found the activity of drawing patterns to be very relaxing and the pandemic was a good opportunity to indulge into lots and lots of patterns drawing. I saw amongst my friends many of us using creativity as a way to cope and this is one of the things I like most about art, its ability to make us feel better.

Michael Mok This picture is about the time when the schools were closed and everyone were having online classes as their daily routine. Not being able to see our friends, and we had a hard time to learn. We really missed having lunch with a group of friends, and being able to have face-to-face conversations. This was truly a tough time for us, as students. But, it also reminds us that how lucky we are to be able to attend school physically now.

Pouya lbf My painting shows what I did during the Corona, which was playing computer games, tennis, and these made me happy.

IN This title is "temperature check".

Due to the influence of COVID19, I wrote a scene to check temperature before enter the store. I never saw such a scene until COVID-19 spread. This is one of the way to prevent corona cluster. I drew it that I hope things get back to normal soon.

Almost last whole semester, we used MS Teams for online class, but now we are have classes in classroom. Everyone wear masks, wash hands keep social distancing. My friends and I will bring hand sanitizer when we go out as well. COVID 19 have a negative impact to us; however, we try our best to protest ourselves and others-wearing masks is the best way to that. .

Tony Ren During the corona time you can't go out doors because virus will spread by air. also many people think bat is the culprit of covid -19 ; therefor, no much people hunt bats. After I went back to Vancouver I have to be in quarantine for 2 weeks(14 days) it's not a hard time for me; however, I understood how the virus scared. Now there are almost a year past, virus is still serious here; therefor, I want corona time pass soon and no more people get sick.

Iker Pedrero This image represents a stage of my life in which I suffered a lot because my mom and my dad got COVID-19, so for me was very difficult. I needed to take care of them by cooking and trying to take care of their necessities.

Today, they are feeling good I thank god that helped them, I realize the importance of taking care. And I know this pandemic is growing every day it is really important to protect ourselves.

And always do your best effort to move forward in life.

During this period, we cannot go out so we spend most of the time watching dramas and movies. My parents are working on weekdays so we hardly do anything together. For me, it was hard to spend the time in the house all day but I could spend with my family and cill so it was precious time.

Tomas C. I'm an international student and this drawing captures my Covid19 experience. Before I came to Canada we had a national Covid testing in my country and everybody had to participate. It was just terrible. There were many people in these suits followed by military. I never want to experience something similar once again... It was like a war. I hope we will beat Covid as soon as possible and we will be able to continue our lives without any restrictions.

Lynz During the time lockdown, I cannot go out to take photographs, so I spend time on my terrace. At that time, beside some old leaves, I found some sprout shoots which represent the hope that everything will be better.

In the past, beauties were around people, but in this year, beauties had taken away by COVID-19. I want to remind those people who do not really care about the results of COVID-19. Brown I found out i have a very rare genetic disease. this causes fatigue. i decided to create a series of gene artworks, with broken genes. this is one from my gene series. most people who have this disease die before age 5. how i've lived so long is anyone's guess. The disease is called Deficiency of Gene ECHS1.

Janna Kumi I draw and paint tree bark. I have drawn many bark drawings of North Vancouver trees over the past five years or so and last year I received a Canada Council for the Arts grant to produce 12 large-scale bark drawings. I also completed some experimental works. The one I am submitting is the bark of a Garry oak from a tree standing on the east side of Harbour street - in a light industrial area. There are two Garry oaks standing there, but the area has not been kind to them. Last year, a city tree pruning crew came along and loped off some more branches. Why is this important? Garry oak occurs on the southeast portion of Vancouver Island, and their ecosystem is severely threatened by development. There are only a handful of mature trees left in Vancouver. I have painted this tree's bark as shown in the image provided

CW K. I draw what i did during Covid situation in my country. I did online class for the first time in my life, and I couldn't meet with friends, so I also did facetime a lot in house. Also, I did many things that I can't do during school time. I played puzzle, watch TV, play phone, and draw.

In my country, making 'Dalgona' coffee and beaded bracelet was trend, so I also made it. The year of 2020 was new and tired to everyone, but I think it was also good to stay with my family for more long time.

Kolina Logan I love challenging myself with different types of paper or canvases. I love using different paints, Watercolour or Acrylic or Inks. I love getting responses back that tells me I am helping people get through these Covid Times.

SH SH My drawing is about a hobby that I picked up during quarantine which is video games. Playing video games helped me stay busy and forget about the outside world for a while. It made me cheer up and brought new friends to my life and even brought back some old friends.

Yuriya Fujimi My illustrations show a heavily consumed face mask, a poster that evokes the COVID-19, and that you shouldn't meet your friends, family from other place. I expressed them by placing a lot of empty boxes in the less popular back alleys to indicate that masks are needed.

Pat Penner Because of the Covid restrictions, instead of visiting Europe as planned this year, we took the opportunity to explore BC. This watercolour was painted to remember our (safe) visit to Alert Bay, which was a magical place. I have had a renewed appreciation this year for our beautiful province and most especially, living in the City of North Vancouver.

R. T. This picture is about "Stay Home". I believe it can only be done during the coronavirus period. Japan didn't lock down, but we voluntarily stayed home.

This is what my room looked like at that time. I ate snacks as I wanted, and watched movies a lot. And, I played UNO with my family. I drew what I did during this summer. I decided to draw it because it is the one that was impressive to me.

Junzhe Lu This image shows that people need to wash our hands often.

And the virus is vey dangerous, the bacteria cause your body suffered. And the background is totally green, because it means environment.

Alison Keenan I started this canvas which I call Photosynthesis in February 2020 when the virus was named and then later became a pandemic. I was very sure that I did not want to paint a canvas with Covid -19 images or to produce a work that was dark and depressing. One of the consequences of the pandemic was the clearing of the skies and the sense that the earth began to breath again. The imagery is influenced by my garden now flourishing like a jungle!

I'm living in one of the center of the pandemic, which is known as Canada. The message of this picture is " Human- hand in hand- fight Covid -19". I drew this picture to hope that people can join hands protect our community, especially the people who live in Canada. I hang out with my friends and I see many people do not wear mask, that's so bad. They seem like not care about their health, they also do not have response to the health of other people.

They have been patient and kind, their ability to adapt has been amazing. Our little family has grown closer than ever, going through all this constantly reminds us of how precious time is. Emma Vickers When the pandemic started there was a lot of fear at work. Walking home after my 12hr night shift in emergency to find my neighbours had put these out on their front garden, made me feel so loved by the community. Bringing the community together is what I will remember about COVID-19.

John Nguyen my picture is about a quarantine area. In here, people are singing a song for each other. The atmosphere in the quarantine area is very close and happy. people are trying to keep their distance while listening to music. their consciousness is very good.

Ashe Verjee I painted this mixed media image in December of 2019, a few weeks before I departed for an expedition to Antarctica. I named this piece "Anticipating Antartica".The multiple shades of blue, green, and white were colours I expected to see. I layered the piece with bright orange in anticipation of being surprised by the elements in a place where very few have visited.

It also reflects many hours of sunshine, and the circular shape represents the South Pole seen on most traditional maps.

David Little One of the shocking things about the pandemic is how our habits and use of our neighbourhoods has changed.

Many times in the last few months our roads have been completely empty. It's such a new perspective to look at our homes and streets from the street. That's the good thing.\n\nUnfortunately, the bad thing is that fewer people are around. Not just our cars. Our pedestrians too. \n\nThis picture shows a nice evening stroll. No cars. No people. Just a shadow.

Ilse Bebris During the bleak spring of Covid 19 I made a series of drawings all in black and white to reflect the mood of the times. I collaged a selection from those drawings with a photo I'd taken and enlarged adding just the smallest hint of colour to remind me that life was moving on, blossoms were appearing and with spring came renewal and hope.

Veronica Shields My husband and other musicians have played music at a Seniors' Jam on Fridays at John Braithwaite Community Centre for many years now. This event has grown in popularity over the years, and many people, often accompanied by their caregivers, would attend, enjoy the music and dance the afternoon away.

Due to COVID, the band was unable to play there, but were kindly permitted to play their music outside at the Shipyards, where they entertained the public on Friday mornings for a few weeks, until they had to cease due to further lockdown. As music is such an important part of everyone's lives, the musicians and participants look forward to being able to enjoy this popular activity again soon!

Adele Neuman This image shows my first treatment at Lions Gate Hospital's Chemo Treatment Centre. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and have been in treatment throughout the pandemic. I am actually smiling behind the mask, as I'm happy that treatment started quickly, and that the nurses there are truly wonderful. Tara Cree My husband and daughter tested positive for COVID. This meant the two of them isolating away from my son and I to keep us safe.

Additionally, my son and I decided to stay away from one another for added precaution and to avoid a more lengthy isolation period. It was hard being in the same house and not being together. So we watched TV together through Zoom and played games together.

It made the isolation and stress bearable. This photo is a combination of 3 photos of our virtual time together.

This is an early painting when Covid-19 first hit Europe and slowly North America and Canada. I found it very inspiring when Italians were singing from their balconies during a complete lockdown and children were writing:"Andrà tutte bene" (Everything will be all right"). The Covid-19 Virus is not the only contagion kindness, hope and solidarity were spreading too. Nothing is certain at this challenging time, but this crisis may well help bring us closer together. Let us all distance ourselves from each other today, so that we can embrace each other more warmly tomorrow. Be safe and stay healthy. I wish you and your loved ones well during this difficult time!

Fast forward 7 months later, we are in the middle of the second wave, most of us are tired and worn out from all the restrictions.

There are still many random acts of kindness, but a lot of people have so much less patience and just want things to return to how they were before. This? New Normal? is difficult to accept. There has been so much loss and grief, anxiety, and despair all over the world. We all have been affected by the pandemic in one way or another, and many have been going through more hardships and loss than others. And, as challenging as this time is, I try to also look at this time from a different angle. It has opened us up for new possibilities and opportunities that we would not have pursued otherwise ? me included. So, for this I am extremely grateful!

And I remain positive that we will all get through this...

The experience of confinement and the stress of the pandemic had many effects on me, one of them was a temporary obsession with making my own fermented foods. I have been making my own kombucha for a long time, but I ventured into making ginger beer, sauerkraut, yogurt, water kefir, kimchi, pickles.....Not everything was a success, I never got the pickles or the vinegar right!, but some of those experiments did work great. We all got very conscious of the presence of microscopic life with the pandemic, disinfecting, washing our hands often, wearing masks and it is all necessary but I think part of the appeal of making fermented food was the reassuring thought that not all microorganisms are dangerous and many are necessary for life, many are beneficial within our bodies, on our skin or work with us to make better tasting and healthy food.

Dolores During the COVID isolation period I reverted back to painting with watercolours after a 25 year absence. Previously, I never had enough time to myself and found it very therapeutic to get back into it.

This COVID isolation period has let me reconnect with my feelings, re-think my priorities and find joy in the simple and everyday. Making art has been a positive outlet. I love to get lost in the process, and find it to be calming to my soul.

Carol Sutherland I've collected photos I took during 2020 that represent the many new experiences of that unique year: Mask wearing, online meetings, delivering groceries to my elderly father, social distancing, two sons living abroad ( and the travel ban), and one son celebrating his birthday while quarantining. Walking, nature and art ( knitting and painting) kept me grounded. As well as regular distanced conversations with friends and neighbours.

Andy Prest Getting outside has been a huge priority for my family throughout the pandemic (although it's not always easy when it's 2 C and raining outside and you've got a sweet new Legend Of Zelda game to play inside. It's always worth it though, no matter the weather, to breath fresh. Good for the body, good for the soul. A. A. This is my daughter, chasing the virus in the kitchen :) sometimes wonder about the long term consequences of the pandemic on children and young adults. I hope they won't get too worried about germs and being in a crowd for a long time after this is over. We can't predict what the new normal will be but I hope it will be closer to what was before the pandemic than what it is now.

I have practiced midwifery out of Quayside Village office space for almost 2 decades. When the pandemic hit my practice had to change to keep clients, residents, my colleagues and myself safe. Although midwives are frontline workers, we were initially overlooked by VCHA as essential workers. Sew with Claire North Shore, first came to our aid with handmade PPE ( masks, gowns and caps) and then with an Angel that essentially repurposed my practice's office furniture by reupholstering it with professional grade wipeable vinyl material... A previous client then made us washable fleece drapes to match.

We feel grateful and supported by our community and so do our clients

The first few months of the 2020 lockdown were a time of self reflection and recharging for me. When I was suddenly required to work from home, thus reinventing my job I had to make sure I disconnected from screens 100% for part of each day, and also set up limits and boundaries for my mental health. At a time when no one could really do very much - even outdoor hiking and nature areas were closed off - I made the best of; and was even more thankful for what I have and could enjoy. An apartment I like, a sundeck area for my plants, lots of trees around me and an awesome cat to share my comfy chair. I have always loved my morning coffee time outside on warm, or (even slightly chilly) days. This photo exemplifies a great morning, when the massive Rhodo that surrounds my deck was in superbloom. It is an incredibly restful memory, amidst a year of quiet, doubt, stress and personal loss due to COVID-19.

Sharon Geris An afternoon at the Quay with my younger son felt like a special occasion, instead of something we did all the time. We were taking photos to capture a moment we had taken for granted dozens of times before. I think living in Covid times? gave us a better appreciation of moments that used to be such a part of our routine.

I figured what ever he is doing it will be in the paper. It turns out he was taking a picture of Artists Sophie Babeanu and Sandrine Pelissier co-ordinating of this public art project. I am a North Vancouver Photographer and I was at the Shipyards photographing the NZR Productions. They were the performers for Lower Lonsdale BIA Valentine's Day at the Shipyards that day. During COVID I work from home and force myself to get out an hour or 2 a day to take pictures. I find taking pictures helps me change my state of mind and it helps me have balance in my life.

Iva Dietrich 2020 has given me the opportunity to paint again! Typically I like to paint landscapes but since we all need a little lift these days, I decided to paint something completely different. Something that would put a smile on someone's face. A cow with eyelashes sure did the trick! It was so much fun that I decided that this Christmas, I would organize a paint night. Each family member got the same sized blank canvas and was asked to paint an animal of their choice to join my cow painting.

She was the 10th person in BC to die from COVID-19. This image is of a print my mother did on March 30th, 1984, the title of this piece is Despair. This piece perfectly represents how we feel about the end of my mother's life due to COVID and the last image that we had of her a day and a half before she passed away. My family and I have felt despair during this pandemic, and certainly for how our mother's life ended. It is like this piece of art was foreshadowing the end of her life. It was completed almost exactly 34 years prior to her death. Our mother was an artist. Our family is submitting this piece to honour who she was, and how she left this world. She was greatly loved.

WP What I have missed most during these strange days and weeks and months is not being with my church community. I belong to St. Clement's church and everybody tries very hard to keep in touch, to connect, to help us make the most of what would be very important days such as Easter and Christmas.

We were encouraged by efforts such as Lent/Advent in a Bag to create our own rituals at home to stay connected to the Holy. And I am so grateful for these small gestures that bind us together in spirit, if not in person.

Morgan D My colleague, Sabrina and I delivered Christmas Gift Baskets to 20 low-income clients before the holidays. The baskets were donated by Amica and were such a wonderful surprise for our clients. Many of them do not have any family or friends that can support them as they self-isolate in their homes. The baskets included basic toiletries, cookies, a blanket, and other surprises.

Faith leaders had a steep learning curve in the early weeks of the pandemic, as we turned our services "inside out" to serve a congregation outside of our walls. It was fun (and often stressful!) as we all imagined new ways of "doing church" when we couldn't gather in person. A silver lining was having the opportunity to try new things in a supportive and forgiving climate - we were all in the same boat, and if we made mistakes along the way, so be it! This photo was taken outside St. Clement's in Lynn Valley on Easter morning 2020, beside a cross laden with bright daffodils. After weeks of offering prerecorded services, we clergy had made the big decision to - for the first time actually livestream ourselves on Facebook as we rang the church bell to celebrate the good news of Easter. Of course, it all went wrong and when we went "live" the video was sideways. Yet another one for the blooper reel!

Miriam Gil Title: Tree of LIfe: Ceiba Speciosa. Oil on canvas, 2021\nPartly in response to the present virus, and partly in search for meaning, I decided to work on a series of paintings on Trees of Life. This particular painting is a ceiba speciosa, a common South American tree, celebrated for its many properties; its flowers attract a variety of hummingbirds, its seeds are a source of food for various types of parrots and other animals; it's seeds produces a type of cotton that could be harvested to make pillows, but most of all, it is a beautiful tree with long and wide branches that resemble an embrace. Many cultures of the world have their own Trees of Life, and being coming from South America, I wanted to focus this time on the beauty of a Ceiba tree.

However I have seen them recently on a deciduous tree so I was happy to take this photograph of one of them.

This is a screenshot from a mobile phone taken on May 21, 2020. At that time, all schools started to take online classes because of COVID-19.

At the same time, the price of air tickets has risen rapidly because of COVID-19. In April, the ticket from Vancouver to Shanghai cost nearly 20,000 Canadian dollars to buy. So I chose to buy a ticket for June, which would be cheaper. But by the end of May, the global epidemic became more and more serious, and airlines had to cancel flights. When I got the news, I was very sad and very angry.

I have two reasons why I chose "Social Distance" for this project. First reason is that Social Distance is still not common for me.

Before covid, no one cared about distance; however, now we need to keep distance every time we go outside. If covid is not happening now, of course we won't keep Social Distance from others. Moreover, there is a drawback. When we go shopping or something, we need to wait for long time to enter store because there is limit on how many people can dine in at one time. Because of Covid 19, the students in the world, include me have to wear the masks and couldn't go outside very often to hang out or meet people and it is very hard to go abroad, also we couldn't go to school. On the other hand, it was pretty good because we don't need to go to school and we can take class at home, however I was very bored and online class was very sleepy and boring.\n Because of Covid 19, we spent more time at home, So almost every school in the world started online classes. When I'm taking online class, it was quite hard and uncomfortable on me, because I cannot concentrate well, and teachers can't explain well because there is no proper whiteboard. My drawing is about taking online class at home. In my drawing, the earth means us, because the earth is wearing mask because we have to wear mask everyday, and it is using Microsoft teams to take online class.

Our lives have changed completely since COVID -19 spread all over the world. For example, when we go outside, we have to wear masks every time; furthermore, we need to keep a social distance from each other.

Also, I think a lot of problems caused by this rule. In the image, the face is covered with a mask. Therefore, I tried to write a bandage on the nose of the mask. This means that the mask can cause any damage to our bodies. In addition, this image is modeled on one of my teachers who wore a mask and had a nose inflammation. I also painted the COVID-19 virus in red. This shows how strong the virus is.

The grasses shows us that the COVID-19 viruses transfer very easily. Also, when I color the face, I colored it with various colors.

Because COVID -19 is something that doesn't happen normally, and it's very strange, so I decided to paint the picture with an unusual color to express that. I hope that COVID-19 will gradually converge and return to its normal life as soon as possible.

I started watching cooking videos on Tik Tok at the start of the pandemic. These 1-minute videos took my mind off the negativity that's surrounding the world. One of my favourite recipes was the dalgona coffee that went viral back in 2020. All you need is instant coffee, hot water and sugar. I would highly recommend making the Japanese souffle pancake and the jiggly cheesecake. Although we weren't able to travel, I was able to bring food from Japan to my mouth with my own hands. Some other food trends that I have yet to try are the hot chocolate bomb, 3ingredient cookie, and cloud bread. I think the pandemic unravelled many people's passion for cooking and baking. With all the spare time I had, I was able to focus on a newly discovered hobby. I made croissants and fresh brioche bread for the first time. In addition to all the baking, I worked my first job during the pandemic. I worked at a bubble tea shop near my house and it was an everlasting experience.

The coronavirus pandemic has been causing havoc on people's lives for four months.

Many of us have spent a significant amount of time at home enjoying ourselves during those long days indoors, which means we're watching more TV, downloading more videos, blasting more songs, and reading more books. During this difficult time, I was mostly watching movies, shows, and series from Netflix. At this point in quarantine, I felt like I've watched every single TV show and series Netflix has to offer. Moreover, this picture shows how my living room looks like in Turkey. My favorite series that I watched during the pandemic was Elite which is a teenager series. When three working-class teenagers begin attending an exclusive private school in Spain, the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder. The clash between those who have everything and those who have nothing to lose creates a perfect storm that ends in a murder. The reason that I liked this series so much!

The pandemic becomes worse and worse all over the countries, people now have to wear masks anytime and every where. And we can no longer see other people's full face , even though we can still meet each other. In the public place, we can always see there is a big warning on the board that reminds people to wear mask, keep 2 meters distance. By using some of the blue colors to color the people in the background, showing people are depress and feel uncomfortable of wearing masks.

People who are in the picture with no face emoji and emotion, walking like robots also show how the world become due to Covid19 pandemic. Same with the feeling of me standing In the middle of crowded people.

Hope this pandemic will go through quickly, and people can show their full face and their smile to others.

Since the beginning of the explosive development of Covid 19, students who study abroad have to pack up and go back to their country to make sure that they?re safe and be protected by their parents. I was in that situation, I had to go back to Vietnam.

Everything's okay during the flight but when I just arrived, I got heat shock for a while because the temperature in Vietnam is really high, around 33 Celcius degrees, which 20 degrees higher than in Canada. I also got a mental shock when the government announced that people who arrived from another country had to do quarantine with many people in an area and were not allowed to do quarantine in their own house. That time was very terrible but also memorable for me. Because it is a military school, so it has a soccer field or volleyball court for every to play. And the interesting thing is that people in quarantine were allowed to join. But the pandemic was getting worse so I decided to stay in my room. that's how I have this drawing.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has made the Lunar New Year this year very different. In China, masks made of thread and cloth have become the most sought "new year" products, and their prices have increased a lot, became "priceless treasures" in various supermarkets.

However, the mask that can effectively protect people from viruses is actually the N95 masks.

With the spread of the virus in Wuhan last year, there were very few people on the street because the people in Wuhan were in serious condition and were in urgent need of masks, many caring people or foreign friends have begun to donate a large number of masks, and each region has written some unique greetings on the supply boxes. "The epidemic is current, regardless of national boundaries", this sentence touched me very much, but all we can do is to protect ourselves and others as much as possible, wearing masks in accordance with local requirements is very important currently.

Well , you can see everything I've done in quarantine, in my painting; I've done some cool thins like practicing skateboard, watching Netflix, going to Turkey and here, Canada, But quarantine had some bad things for me; as we all know we had to stay home and it wasn't good at all; We couldn't go out with our friends, we couldn't go to the gym, and generally we couldn't do a lot of outdoor activities that made us feel good. So we couldn't spend time with people who make us happy; we couldn't even go to school ! Anyway, we all experienced a lot of good and bad things. And I just hope these all finish soon.

Quarantine was an awful experience for me, mostly I did nothing and I just chill for a huge time. N. I. I could not go out during Covid-19 lockdown, so I practiced cooking with my mother in my house. The place I want you to see in my drawing is the vegetables on the frying pan. Also,I drew steak sauce. I made a lot of sweets during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Among them, the one I practiced the most was pudding, but it was very difficult. Many restaurants were influenced by Covid-19, but I want to encourage them with this picture.

During this Covid-19 lockdown, I was able to meet new hobbies and delighting my family with my cooking.

All Hong Kong schools faceto-face lessons were mostly suspended in the second half of 2020 because of the COVID-19. This was the reason that I only had lessons at my school for 88 days and had lessons at home. I did it at my study room. As I also sleep there, I couldn't concentrate during lesson time. St Andrew's United This is an image by Rose Jones of the front walk of St. Andrew's United Church, painted rainbow this past summer. While the world was going through a very hard time, we found a moment to unite in creating art, to breathe for a moment in the sunshine, and to celebrate and proclaim diversity.

Covid has affected all people's lives and I am not an exception. I personally used some stuff to be able to get over the fact of loneliness and improve my mental health during this time. The picture that I drew illustrates the importance of simple material that helped me during this time.

Life got limited after Covid started. We must spend more time in our house. In my art, I want to show everyone how my life got really limited mostly to just social media and TV instead of hanging out with my friends. I try to tell people that TV and the smartphone helped me during this time, also I tried to keep up my physical health level which was difficult for me. I did sports. The fact that a lot of sports require people to gather, which was not a good idea during the Covid time, limited my choices and I could just play basketball in the backyard of our house.

The first reason I drew a mask is because many people always wear it when they go out due to the COVID19. Also, there are many places where we can't enter if we don't wear a mask when entering a restaurant or store. Or there are cases where masks are distributed or sold at stores. The second reason I drew an emoji is because people feel about the current situation.

These emojis do not look happy and look uncomfortable or stuffy. Lastly, I drew bacteria because it is related to COVID19 and there are some bad things. For these various reasons, I drew mask, emoji, and bacteria.

My job is simple and versatile. The content described is my school life during the viral period. I haven't returned to my home country this year, but have been living in school.

This sounds crazy, but I can only do this to ensure safety. I miss my parents and relatives and hope no one will get the virus. I also hope that the teachers and students of the school will not be infected with the virus. I have never learned to paint, but this simple painting expresses my wish that the world will get better as soon as possible. And we have to wear masks every day.

It was really boring when Corona came, at first everybody got excited because there was no school and everybody said "oh its gonna go in just a few weeks" but guess what it's still here. My experience in quarantine was full of video games whenever I got bored I just turned on my console and played with my friends until night and had a great time together. I also liked to watch lots of Netflix whenever I started a series I finish like 3 seasons in one day and my mom would always ask 'What season are you on?" and I would say "episode 3" and when she wanted to say that's good I always cut her and said "season 3" and there was a look of disappointment in her eyes.

All of us had a hard time during the quarantine. Some of us completely changed - turned into those people beyond recognition. Personally, I had a difficult time in quarantine, of course, to sit 4 months locked up at home was so challenging for me. This picture which I drew, using crayons and black marker, shows my inner state, which I experienced during the quarantine. This is exactly the character I imagined myself to be: an angry, grumpy, mad at all the World, sitting on a chair and wondering when these unbearable days of quarantine would pass. Disavowed from society beyond recognition person who was very bored, who just wasted her precious time, which she could spend on something useful.

Misan Edema I had time to watch all the movies I had recorded and procrastinated to watch for almost two years. I listened to a lot of music, even had time to realize my music type, and carefully analyze how my music reflects my personality. I listened to Lil Baby, Future, Lil Uzi Vert and so many others. One artist that stood out the most to me and inspired me a lot during this period was Jaden smith. His albums include SYRE and ERYS. He is the reason I had time to realize what I wanted to in the future. The lockdown helped me collect my thoughts and bring them together and that's what this drawing shows. The trousers are one of the designs I did during this lockdown. I designed 6 pairs of trousers 1, a shirt and 2 pairs of shorts. I was productive in my own opinion during this lockdown. I watched iconic movies like Scarface and a lot of iconic sequels like the James Bond sequel.

Latina Zhao 2020 is a sad year. The outbreak of the epidemic has greatly changed my life. I was going to send a dance video online, but I put on a mask in the first video. I like to play role-playing since the beginning of 2020, but I still can't take off my mask and show my true face. School closed, I returned home, electronic products became my dependence. These apps become a must every week. With the thickening of the glasses, my mobile phone use time and my mother's anger have been greatly improving......

We held a ceremony for a dead moth. Like, here is my best friend, close to tears, with his cat that killed it, and here I am, holding a pile of dirt or poop or whatever it was with my pressed pants and nice shirt drenched in sweat from biking in the hot weather.

Early in the morning (around three am), my friend messaged me saying that their cat had brought a humongous moth into his bedroom. At first, they just let their cat toss the poor creature around the room. It wasn't until about ten minutes later that they realized the bug was still alive. Feeling guilty, they tried to nurse it back to health because that's what kind-hearted people whose cats try to kill moths at three in the morning do. A little after lunchtime, I noticed his "it died :(" message. I packed my switch and rode over, new shoes and all, to console them. The moth's back was shiny and hard, but the dirt felt soft as I watered the plant above the carcass.

Patrick G. When COVID hit it was scary. No one knew what to do or how it will turn out.

It was a time of uncertainty. After a wile we got used to not going outside and not being able to see one an other. Just when we thought it was starting to get better, the variants and the 2nd and 3rd wave came and we went back to lockdown. I was not able to do what I like and meet with my friends. It is a truly bad experience, that I do not wish for anyone. Although most of the world is in lockdown and crisis I am one of the lucky people who are able to go to school and continue my life relatively uninterrupted, but most people are not so lucky. I hope that this pandemic will be over soon and life and go back to what it once was.

Hector Escobar My city mosaic represents how I lived during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. I am thankful to my parents because during quarantine I did not get to struggle because I had all the comfort in my homes like food, entertainment, and health. I drew three main shows that I watched during quarantine and I choose them because they were the ones, I liked the most and the ones I get most interested in. In the fourth square, I drew the people that I spent quarantine with, and it was only with my mom because my dad needed to work in another city in Mexico. Overall, for me, the quarantine was a good experience. I got to rest for some months and none of my family members got sick. I enjoyed being in Mexico for a long time again and quarantine also helped me to gain weight and I started doing more exercise. Quarantine helped me to get to know myself better and to realize certain things.

Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. The Tibetans believe the Lung ta (Wind Horse) carries the prayers depicted on the flags to all beings. When we first hung the 76 prayer flags in the courtyard, I was overcome with emotion at the thought of releasing good vibrations into the world. Each flag has a large hand painted heart and affirmation. I incorporated words that hold meaning for our tenants along with other positive words.The words we use can have a powerful affect on ones life. Rocks Charming neighbourhood gardens inspired my Beauty is still thriving gratitude project. My heart sings when I walk by a lovely garden vignette. As a random act of gratitude, I collage a rock using repurposed material and conceal the treasure for the gardener to find. I have hidden approximately 40 rocks with more to come.

Materials include newsprint, magazines, confetti, origami paper, and old calendars. All the rocks are unique, and are named and signed. My message is to simply notice and be more aware. Beauty surrounds us, and patiently reveals itself to those who choose to see it. People crave distraction from their reality, why not make the distraction beauty.

He invited me into a discord server with his friends to play a game on Roblox with them. I agreed and I joined their voice call. That was the first time I ever met my best friend.

During quarantine, we had ups and downs in our friend group, and we split our ways afterward. But in the end, some of us stuck together, I became close friends with a girl.

She is amazing, and if I've never met her, I don't think I would still be here today.

Wiran L. In 2020, COVID-19 broke out and many people around the world had affected.

People had to go into quarantine and stay away from everyone else, in order to stop the disease from spreading around, and I am also one of those people. During quarantine, I needed to stay in the dorm the whole time, I had nothing to do, and it made me felt boring. One day, I just opened my laptop and find something to watch. I saw an anime trailer that looks very interesting, so I started to watch anime again. The first anime that I watched during quarantine was Jibaku Shounen HanakoKun. Later on, I found that anime was always something that I was interested in.

After since that day, I've never been bored ever since. I've watched a lot of anime such as Parasite, Anohana, Demon Slayer, Hataraku Saibou, and more. These anime were considered my best friends during quarantine, and they never let me feel alone.

Ka Long People have a hard time during COVID. People need to stay in their home without going out or hanging out with friends. Since you can't have outdoor activities, people choose to stay at home to surf the internet. A lot of teenagers, including me, like to watch anime or cartoons. I spend my time watching animes on different websites and youtube. I drew an ACG character. I loved the nine-tailed fox so much, but I think that drawing a fox is too dull, so I changed it into a human form.

For example, we must wear a mask when we face people, we should even wear a mask when we exercise, and when you go outside or go to the mart, you must bring a mask.

The reason why there are no people's expressions in this picture shows that masks have become an object of annoyance to people, but now people forget all the inconveniences about masks as they become commonplace. Masks have become a necessity in our daily lives, and now masks are an indispensable and precious thing to us.

M. T. My Covid-19 experience has been full of ups and downs, but I was able to find happiness doing what I enjoy the most. Therefore, I ended up creating a random piece of art relating to Covid (A chicken nugget with eyes and a mask on it). During the outbreak of COVID-19, I spent most of my time studying online. MS teams was a major part of my COVID life back then since we did not have in-person classes. It was tough for me since there is a huge time difference between China and Canada, and I was not used to the virtual class system.

Other than studying online, I also spent my time with my family; since we have a coffee machine in our home, we would drink coffee together every morning during breakfast time and watch the news TV. Mask was also a thing that annoyed me because it made it difficult for me to breath. But since we have to keep ourselves safe, masks were essential during COVID time, and I got used to wearing it. Because my workload is manageable back then, I had a lot of time to go on to social medias and see what is new and trending.

Yes, COVID-19 had influenced my life and set limitations for me, but I think things were not too bad for me.

Bella Lee During Art 8/9 (A) Ms. Weiss March 29, 2021 To Avoid Covid-19 The title of my artwork is that Covid-19. It described how Covid-19 is currently, and inspired by "The Three Little Pigs". To sum up the story, a wolf follows three pigs to eat, but the youngest, a diligent pig house of strong bricks protects himself from wolves. I think this story is similar to the current issue of Covid-19 because we desire to escape from the pandemic now and eventually discover a vaccine to be able to avoid the pandemic. The wolf is the same as a covid-19 because he chases constantly the three pigs (people), and the vaccine and masks are similar to the strong brick house. In my artwork, the two pigs try to block the wolf with a mask and the youngest pig is holding a vaccine with a smile from behind. Even though the wolf interrupts, the three pigs bet they will win the battle someday. In addition, in this fairy tale, the first and second pigs failed to avoid the wolf and fled to the last pig's house.

Annie Liu Because the COVID-19 everyone wears the mask. When I came to Canada, I was quarantine in the homestay, and every day I can just stay at my room except to go to washroom. After I finish class every day, I will look at the scenery outside for a while. The scenery over there is very good. I will sit at the table and study, including eating, and spend the rest of the time in bed.

Sometimes I will order some drinks and everyday my homeowner will make the food for me and it is good. I always chat with my friends but its also boring when I was in isolation.

Judy Karwacki Once fitness clubs were closed for group activities in March 2020, a group of women began having Zumba dance sessions in a garden four times a week. We want to stay healthy and positive so we came together to create these sessions. We have enjoyed other positive benefits such as joy, love and camaraderie. We even purchased tents that enable us to continue dancing even in the rain and cold. We celebrate special occasions.

Miriam Gil It has always been crucial to me to participate in cultural expressions to enrich my mind and soul with new ideas and alternative ways of thinking. That is why I decided to visit the exhibit at the MOA entitled, A Future for Memory. This exhibition is a tribute to the human resilience after having experienced a natural catastrophe, such as the earthquake, the tsunami and the explosion of the nuclear reactor in Japan in 2013. This particular photograph of mine is a sample of a section of the exhibition dedicated to honour the trees affected by the radiation.

Close to this artwork, there is a quote by Chihiro Minato, which I found inspiring: ?

Animals and humans live thanks to trees. It is not that humans planted trees, but trees planted humans. When we touch the irradiated Igune and forest trees in Fukushima, we are feeling the surface of a time period that is far longer than humans have known.?

During COVID-19, some media, in order to gain attention, reported pets can also get COVID-19. In fact, there is no evidence that pets such as cats and dogs are infected COVID-19. But people only believe what they see and this was the origin of the matter.One night, I heard a cat screaming, It was the most heart-wrenching sound I had ever heard. The next day, When I got up to walk the dog, I saw what had happened last night, five kittens had been thrown from the building, blood flowed all over the ground.

There were signs of crawling on the ground, it seems that the cats were still struggling, hoping someone would come and save them after they had been thrown down. The residents found the owner of these cats, he said he loves the cats but there are reports that pets are not safe, he just couldn't watch them die. It's ridiculous. If you can't protect them, don't feed them.

Santaya Pendant la quarantaine, j'ai fait pas mal de choses, mais les choses que j'ai dessinées c'est ce que j'ai fait le plus. J'ai passé beaucoup de temps avec ma famille. J'ai aussi passé beaucoup de temps à parler avec mes amis sur FaceTime et par courriel. J'ai mangé beaucoup de nourriture.

La dernière chose que j'ai beaucoup fait est que j'ai regardé tellement de films avec ma famille, presque tous les jours.

I was missing the in person yoga classes, going to the gym, going to a restaurant or going to a coffee. Even if I was not necessarily talking to people at a class, the gym or the coffee, I liked the idea of being in a busy place, surrounded by other people, the possibility of smiling to someone or just engaging in small talk. Confinement made me realize how much we need a community around us to feel good.

Naima Before Covid, we would have a big birthday party with all my friends. They would come over and we would have a great time.

Now, I have my birthday on Zoom and just with my family.

For the first time, I understood the words "trust the process," and what they meant in my life. Through anxiety, depression, and isolation, and some unhealthy coping mechanisms, I decided to ground myself in my art practice. To encourage my creativity, I began to say yes to new projects. I did my first (virtual) demo, my first solo show, and a 100 day art project. I didn't know what I was doing but as I showed up each day, messy and uncertain of what I was going to create, I discovered that just the act of sitting down at my desk with a sketchbook is an act of self care. I like to think there's some wisdom there I can apply to life as well. Life is uncertain.

One day sickness or a phone call or a global pandemic can alter your perfectly planned future. But if I show up each day -- messy and uncertain of what I was going to create -- with the positive intention of being kind to myself and honouring my values, I can just trust the process.

This piece is an attempt to transform my intensely personal and individual experience into the physical space of my home office. This site has served as the backdrop for me navigating my gender, mental health, social anxiety, art-making, and final year of my bachelor?s degree while a global pandemic shaped the world outside. The act of remaking this space itself reflects an anxiety about a world out of control, and the space itself is calm, soothing, and in some cases physically soft, to fit the very definition of a ?safe space? both mentally and environmentally. Each piece of the installation is a navigation of emotions, experiences, and stress I have experienced in the past year and as a whole attempts to provoke feelings of reflection, comfort, and uncertainty in viewers.

MW Dad was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia --- an illness that made him forget. In February 2020, I took a picture holding his hand at the facility where he was being cared for during his last phase of life. In March 2020, I was unable to see him anymore as his care facility underwent lockdown. I knew as the months went by that he wouldn't remember; but wow, I didn't forget. On April 1st 2021, I was finally able to enter his facility to see him in person. Over a year and I was finally with my loved one! I took a picture holding his hand again. The next day, he passed away. I wanted to post this here to remember him. He loved and served the North Vancouver community. Rest in peace, dad.

The project supports community connection, combats social isolation, and creates space where resiliency and hope can be celebrated.

In November 2021, phase two of the project began collecting images and stories shared on the digital mosaic to form a public art piece, designed and created by Blake Williams. Images from the digital mosaic form ceramic tiles, interlaced with the artist's interpretations, that create the abstract shape of four houses. The public art piece is a commemorative site; a place of gathering and reflection available to the community for the years and generations to come.

"At Home" can be found on the Green Necklace at Grand Boulevard, near Grand Boulevard and 15th Street.

The North Van City Mosaic was one of five projects created by the Mayor's Healthiest Small City Social Resiliency Collective, formed in June 2020 as a response to COVID-19. More information about the collective can be found in their Summary Report, found on the City of North Vancouver's website.

The North Van City Mosaic Committee consisted of Mayor Linda Buchanan, along with representatives from North Van Arts, United Way of the Lower Mainland, North Vancouver Recreation and Culture, Family Services of the North Shore, North Shore Neighbourhood House, and North Van School District 44.
