Where We Are

Arts in the Garden takes place on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and s ə lilw ə ta ɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples, who have been sovereign caretakers of these lands since time immemorial, and who continue to foster reciprocal relationships with this place. As we engage with, celebrate, and learn from the diversity of nature and the land this weekend, noticing with respect the fungi, flora and fauna and all others who are sharing the land with us, we invite you to reflect on your own relationships and responsibilities to this place.

About Arts in the Garden

Arts in the Garden is an annual outdoor community event that has been taking place for 24 years. The event is a celebration of nature through the arts, with the aim of inspiring visitors to nurture their relationships to the land and to each other. This year, visual artists, musicians and performers are bringing their imagination and creativity to thirteen outdoor spaces across the North Shore.

We’re Excited For You to Experience …

The Gardens: Each garden is unique, and has been cared for and nurtured by the gardeners you will meet during the event. We are grateful this year to be partnering with Harmony Garden, Loutet Farm, LifeSpace Gardens and Wild Bird Trust of BC at Maplewood Flats as special locations for the event, each with their own unique offerings.

The Visual Art: Over 25 visual artists working with a wide variety of materials, including fabrics, acrylics, wood, metal, clay and collage, are bringing their creativity to the event. Two or three visual artists will be hosted in each garden, displaying their work and offering demonstrations or interactive art activities.

The Music: Two musical performances will take place in each garden, offering music in genres that include folk, jazz, and pop.

The Performances: Seven gardens will be hosting performances, occurring once over the course of the weekend, including dance, poetry, a cappella, and multidisciplinary arts.

Feathers & Fungi: In partnership with the Wild Bird Trust of BC, we are offering workshops and interactive engagements exploring the relationship between birds and fungi at Maplewood Flats. Some of these opportunities require advance registration.

How to Join Us

Most garden spaces have an entry fee of $2 cash. Harmony Garden, Loutet Farm and Maplewood Flats have entrance by donation.

$15 Garden Passes are available for purchase online at northvanarts.ca or at CityScape Community ArtSpace (335 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver) in advance of the event, or at each garden venue during the event weekend.

Accessibility

Each garden venue is marked with either a red, yellow, or green accessibility indication. A red marking means that the garden poses several accessibility barriers. A yellow marking means that there are a few accessibility concerns, but the space may still be accessible for some. A green marking means that the garden is overall accessible. Details regarding each space are available online: visit northvanarts.ca or scan the unique QR codes on each garden’s page in this guide.

Information regarding transportation and parking are included on each garden’s webpage. If you do not require accessible parking, we ask that you please leave parking spaces closest to each garden available for those who need them.

How to Use this Guide

Each page in this guide will tell you more about what you can expect at the garden venues for the weekend. You will find:

Addresses: This guide lists each garden venue location and offers a map so that you can visualize your route. This information is meant to accompany, not replace, a real map. Please look up directions to each venue to plan your route.

Performance Times: Musicians play from 12:00pm – 2:00pm and from 2:30pm –4:30pm. Special performances occur once over the weekend, during breaks in musicians’ sets.

Participant Bios: You can learn about each participant through their artist bios. Some artists’ pronouns are included next to their name: this information is here for you, to help you ensure you are referring to artists with their correct pronouns.

Weekend Tips

Bring Cash: Garden entry fees and donations are cash only! We can provide change, but bills under $20 are preferred. Some artists and performers will be selling their work at the event, so bring cash and your card so that you are prepared to make a purchase.

Look For Signage: Each garden will be marked by a large Arts in the Garden sandwich board, and one or two volunteers will be there, ready to greet you!

Plan Your Day: If you plan to visit multiple gardens, make note in advance of where to stop for refreshments. Purchasing a $15 garden pass will offer you a 15% discount at Delany’s in Dundarave, BjornBar Bakery in Edgemont Village, and Bean on 5th in Lower Lonsdale.

Always Ask: Please ask an artist before taking pictures of their work!

Always Ask: Please ask an artist’s permission before posting photos of their work on social media, and ask if you can tag them! It’s always good to give credit and recognition to the artist, regardless of whether they have social media. Include the artist’s name or handle in the body of your social media post or as text in your story. It’s like putting someone’s name next to a quote: give credit where it’s due.

SALLY MCDERMOTT GARDENER

A woodland garden bisected by two streams with old growth Douglas Fir, native trees and shrubs surrounding a mature perennial garden.

MONICA GEWURZ (SHE/HER) Acrylic Mixed Media & Natural Pigments Monica creates evocative and purposely imperfect paintings using upcycled materials, inspired by nature’s patinas, seascapes and the colours of dusk.

KEN CLARKE (HE/HIM) Sculpture in Wood, Concrete and Clay Ken works with natural and found materials. Searching for natural sculpture has as much focus as carving with a hook knife or casting a modeled form into a permanent structure.

SUZAN MARCZAK (SHE/HER) Painting

Suzan’s artistic practice centres around an exploration of the natural world; she tells the stories of this land as seen through her eyes and felt through her footsteps along the trail.

COLIN SANKEY J azz, Latin, Funk, Pop, Rock | Both Days, 12:00pm – 2:00pm Colin is a bass player, composer, and arranger whose use of extended techniques creates lush harmonies and infectious grooves that sound almost orchestral in nature.

J. Knutson is a North Shore based singer-songwriter and founding member of Spirit of The West. He has played on over 50 album projects and been in involved in 5 Juno award winning albums.

A rose garden, tropical garden, secret garden, vegetable garden and woodland area lead up to a beautiful pond and trails.

GARRET ANDREW CHONG (HE/HIM) Digital Artwork Acting as a voice for environmental stewardship and global conservation, Chong’s lens-based images represent the openings in liminal space within our natural world.

STAGES OF CREATIVITY Wood and Acrylic Paint Stages of Creativity is a group of young adults with disabilities attending the North Shore Disability Resource Centre. Photos are transferred onto wood to create bird houses.

TARY + DINA MAJIDI (SHE/HER) Acrylic Paint and Mixed Media

Tary is an international artist. Art allows her to self-express and tell stories. Dina started creating art in early childhood, and continued throughout her college years. Their artworks represent peace, unity, and love.

Norine Braun recently released her 13th album, Songs For Trees. She set her musings during the ongoing pandemic to focus on climate change and the healing power of trees.

North Vancouver-based Lamondance is a non-profit dedicated to the evolution of contemporary dance locally, nationally and abroad.

SPIRIT OF THE SOUTH SEAS Dance | Saturday, 3:30pm – 4:00pm

This award-winning North Shore group invites you join them in their song and dance and experience “island” folklore.

VOIRELIA DANCE, PSYCHOLOGY & PHILOSOPHY HUB Dance | Sunday, 3:30pm – 4:30

Voirelia Hub is performing a site-specific adaptation of “Minds in Motion”. Roving dance performances will activate the garden space as dancers interpret the idea of sculptures in motion.

Violet’s kiln-formed glass is clean and contemporary. Her attention to detail and love of colour, pattern and texture reveal themselves in unique pieces for the home, garden and body.

DANA HUHN (SHE/HER) Alcohol Ink, Acrylic Paints and Inks, Photography (Mixed Media) Dana works in photography and alcohol ink painting as well as colourful semi-abstract/abstract painting. She offers a playful exchange between vibrant colours and bold patterns and marks.

LEANNE ROCKLIFF (SHE/HER) Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas Leanne tosses between photo realism cityscapes and mixed media abstracts, looking to capture the fleeting moments that would otherwise pass unnoticed.

Ava Maria Safai is a multi-disciplinary artist based in BC; she is best known for her work in music and film. Ava Music & Art Centre Ltd. is a music school based in North Vancouver, in which students of all ages, levels and socioeconomic backgrounds are able to pursue their dreams in the arts industry.

Karen Fowlie is a songwriter from Vancouver, with a band weaving sound and light together with such passion that all you can do is relax, sit back and enjoy the grand journey together.

A fourteen-year-old food forest and place of community, offering a safe, vibrant, colorful and creative place for gathering and connection. The arts are naturally incorporated into the space, as Harmony Garden partners with emerging Indigenous artists on a variety of projects. The garden invites visitors to learn about the Indigenous plants that grow throughout S ḵ wx wú7mesh land, many of which are growing right there in the garden.

Through a synchronistic meeting, shakuhachi flute master, Alcvin, and handpan virtuoso, Kiyoshi, made an immediate musical connection. They love making uplifting music that is healing for the community.

Alfredo is a multi-instrument musician who intertwines sounds and atmospheres by creating a distinctive melancholic, yet hopeful, ambience through his finger-style picking method.

“Clear in the River” is a contemporary dance work based on a sensory response to the environment of Lynn Valley Headwaters. The creative process aims to give agency to the natural landscape by allowing it to drive the expression and movement.

Hayley Crichton is the chandler behind Happy Nomad Candles, started in 2017. The beeswax is 100% Canadian, and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Teresa Marie is a Vancouver-based Jazz and R&B vocalist. Teresa typically performs music from the Great American Songbook tradition, but she also enjoys singing Pop as well as her original compositions.

This whimsical garden has been created over the course of twenty five years using hands-on knowledge, for the love of flowers and trees. 75 repurposed chandeliers render the garden magical.

Known as a “fairy songstress,” Clara infuses indie pop with ethereal imagery, soaring harmonies, and elements of Celtic, folk, and alternative genres. There’s nothing she loves more than weaving stories and creating a soft space for listeners to stay for a while.

Dia is an all-female vocal performance trio that sings songs of hope, empowerment and resistance for a changing world. They aim to empower people with their music and messages, and lift up the voices of women and queer femme songwriters and artists.

This garden is a restorative, relaxing gathering space. The garden, which includes a wide variety of local indigenous plants, has been tended by an amazing team of Van Dusen Master Gardeners since 2010.

Allison started wool weaving in 2008, and has continued expressing herself through her pieces, helping pass on the Squamish Nation tradition of wool weaving. Since the Covid 19 pandemic, she has expanded into beading, and has had the opportunity to make many items such as beaded hats, earrings, and pendants!

LAUREN MORRIS (SHE/HER) Acrylic on Canvas, Acrylic on Wood with Resin

As a floral artist, Lauren’s goal is to create arrangements that not only showcase the beauty of flowers, but also tell a story. Her objective is in her desire to fulfill an emotional response, rather than focusing on subject matter.

Pico Masaki incorporates contemporary elements into an Asian traditional instrument, koto/guzheng, accompanied by her singing. She creates a fusion of Western and Eastern sounds, showcasing the diversity of the city and communities in which we live.

Kim Lorene is a singer-songwriter inspired by the lush natural beauty of southern coastal British Columbia. Her warm, rich vocals are supported by acoustic guitar, and more recently by the fun addition of ukulele.

LifeSpace Gardens’ new location on 259 E 1st St is ready to host gardeners and friends. Come learn about urban farming, self-watering gardens, and how you can transform your space to grow your own food!

LifeSpace will be putting on seed starting and edible garden workshops all day. Come for a visit, and leave with some seedlings ready to grow!

Kennedy’s work is situated in the day to day. Using relief sculpture, she depicts seed pods, flowers, moths, and other creatures to express the potential energy we carry and cumulate through the day.

Christina is Mexican-Canadian artist who explores the feminine as a source of strength and boldness through digital drawing and print-making techniques.

Ricardo’s music is deeply personal and honest at the core. He is influenced by his experience as a composer, producing for hip-hop, afro beat, and R&B clients, and his work composing and performing in choirs.

Fiona is a classically trained South Asian violinist who now plays a variety of repertoire, comprising of English and Ethnic music. Her musician motto is “I am the party”.

LOUTET FARM & GERRY’S GARDEN

Loutet Farm, managed by the Edible Garden Project, is a community farm, offering programs, events, and produce for the community. The Edible Garden Project grows food using regenerative practices, and strives to use their space to educate community members about sustainable food production, and to connect people to the natural world. All their events are open to the community and free of charge.

HOLLIS NELSON (SHE/HER/THEY) Painting, Found Objects, Recyling

Hollis is a queer interdisciplinary artist living and working in the DTES of Vancouver, who is best known for her handpainted wearable leather art pieces. Her practice is recyclebased wearable art; a contradiction to fast fashion, they ask her viewers to re-consider what is trash.

NICK CAMPNEY-DURRANT (THEY/THEM) Illustration, Crochet, Textiles

Nick is a non-binary multidisciplinary artist and craftsperson working in a wide variety of mediums, with their current practice revolving around tattooing, illustration, zinemaking, painting, experimental textile dyeing, knitting and crochet. Their work often features messages of queer joy, playful text, checkers, and smiley faces, and explores the intersection between soft and tough.

JASON QIU (HE/THEY) Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic, Pop | Saturday, 12pm – 2pm

Classically trained on piano since age 4, Vancouver-born Jason Qiu began composing his own songs as a teenager. After a choir director told him that he couldn’t hear his voice, Qiu began a personal journey as a solo artist to rediscover his confidence as a singer-songwriter. Performing in both Chinese and English, Qiu’s songs are introspective musings on impactful life experiences.

GOLDBARD Singer-Songwriter | Sunday, 12pm – 2pm

GOLDbard’s music is a veritable potpourri of influences from Jazz to folk. If James Taylor had a baby with Annie Lennox and Etta James, GOLDbard would be that baby.

GLOW MOTIVE Pop, Vocal Layers | Both Days, 2:30pm – 4:30pm

Glow Motive is a collaboration between prolific poet/songwriter/ musician/loop pedalist Anjalica Solomon and seasoned musician/ producer Oceaan Pendharkar. Glow Motive’s heart-warming pop sound is characterized by their luscious vocal layers and emotive lyrics.

HER TRIBAL ROOTS Multidisciplinary performance, movement, drumming, singing | Saturday, 3pm – 3:30pm

Her Tribal Roots is a collective of emotive and compassionate interdisciplinary artists. Through dance, expression, and radical kindness, Her Tribal Roots strives to pay homage to the cultures and people who have influenced their artistic journeys, and to foster connection between communities and with the natural world.

FAIRYTHING (THEY/THEM) Spoken Word Poetry | Sunday, 2:00pm – 2:30pm

For Alex, writing is a means of connection and expression, within themself and with others, and a major source of joy and medicine. Alex fuses words with soundscapes and compositions, and it’s rare to see them perform without the accompaniment of their trusty Suzuki QChord.

This garden space has been partly curated in collaboration with Andy Warner, one of the six co-founders of the Transgender Expressions Haven.

The Haven is a venue for transgender, non-binary, Two-Spirit, intersex artists and other artists transcending gender, who are prioritized in this space during Arts in the Garden, along with their community.

AHBYAH BAKER GARDENER

This garden is working towards becoming a biodiverse garden that can host a multitude of pollinators and wildlife. A tropical section and a multitude of perennials in a naturalistic design lead to a predominantly native woodland garden.

ROBERT TURRIFF (HE/HIM) Wood Carving, Metal, Welding, Bronze Robert enjoys creating organic forms that reference motion or gesture, drawing from elemental forces such as ocean waves, how a tree grows, and patterns left in the sand by the ocean.

ANIA SALMINA Acrylic, Digital

Ania is an illustrator and painter interested in self-discovery through personal life experiences.

A contemporary folk trio inspired by influences in singer-songwriter, jazz, and R&B, The Shorties weave harmonies together with lyrics authentic to their experiences with anxiety, friendship, grief, and hope.

HALF/ASIAN WITH AMY THE CODA Synth Pop with Sign Language

Both Days, 2:30pm – 4:30pm

HALF/ASIAN with Amy the CODA is a mixed race (Cantonese/British) musician making synth pop on an 80’s synth and a Child Of Deaf Adult singing, and signing the lyrics in her mother tongue: sign language.

FRANZ SEACHEL Spoken Word | Sunday, 12:45pm – 1:15pm

Franz Seachel believes art makes living bearable, and is doing her best to put more colour into the world, both in the sense of brightening up the mundane with creation, and in her mission to uplift the truths of marginalized bodies. Franz hopes you dream often; she hopes you find reasons to stay.

DELPHIA JOHNSTONE GARDENER

At the base of Mount Seymour, this garden slopes from the north west to the south east, and has been tiered to accommodate the slope and the water migration from mountain to ocean.

VISUAL ARTISTS

JOANNA LIANG (SHE/HER) Photography, Sculpture, Book Arts, Painting Joanna works with found and repurposed objects. Natural materials are a way for her to engage with the land through mindful gathering (often from her own garden).

THISENI KRISTHORUBADU (SHE/HER) Screen Print and Textile Arts Thiseni’s practice operates as a visual vessel for explorations of identity, place, and creativity. She is especially interested in grey areas and how one can hold space for the contradictions of existence.

DONNA GIRAUD Acrylic Paintings on Canvas or Wood Panel Committed to creating art that evokes intense, relatable emotions, Donna’s heavy use of texture and subtle layers of paint often offer the viewer a moment of pause.

HAIG & FRIENDS Jazz | Both Days, 12:00pm – 2:00pm Haig’s band ranges in musical styles from Swing, Blues, Bossa Nova and Jazz interpretations of pop tunes.

LOGAN AND NATHAN Alt-Folk, Indie-Soul | Both Days, 2:30pm – 4:30pm Logan and Nathan’s sound shimmies along the lines of folk with influences of jazz syncopation and soul.

JHOELY TRIANA FLAMENCO Flamenco Dance | Sunday, 3:30pm – 4:30pm

Jhoely Triana is a Colombian born, emerging flamenco dance artist. This work, entitled “Arboles,” explores the metaphor of trees.

An all-ages event that celebrates the relationship between birds and fungi. Presented in partnership with the Wild Bird Trust of BC.

All About Mushrooms: An Olfactory Play Workshop

Experiment with mushroom inspired scents! We will open our noses by going on a scent walk, classify mushrooms on an aromatic wheel, and engage in drawing games inspired by their aroma.
