Annual Report

2022-2023 issue 54

NORTH VANCOUVER COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL The purpose of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council is to enable emerging and professional artists in all disciplines, to bridge cultures, and to build strong and healthy communities through the arts. The Society aims to provide opportunities for artists and the broader community through programmes, projects, exhibitions, and cultural events throughout the North Shore, and advocate for arts and culture on behalf of our community.

C O R E VA L U E S Ensuring accessibility to all community members; Encouraging artistic understanding and development; Promoting an understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage and diversity of this region, and supporting collaboration. Since 1969, North Van Arts has been planning and programming activities on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ communities in exhibitions, presenting the work of local First Nations artists; in arts education, offering classes led by Indigenous artist/instructors; and in events, working with local Indigenous knowledge keepers and artists who generously share stories and techniques. We are privileged to work with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation in the development of the North Shore Culture Compass, in our efforts at presenting the land in a manner that respects the history of the original occupants and in a manner that acknowledges the reconciliation currently taking place in our combined nations. We look forward to continuing on this path of learning and witnessing the dynamic cultures of Indigenous people.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I’m excited to look back at our accomplishments this past year that have ignited our mandate of supporting artists and connecting community to the arts. Our strategic focus, including improving inclusion & accessibility, attracting new audience & demographics, and post Covid-19 recovery & insights, was bolstered in many ways. We showcased a wide variety of exhibitions at CityScape Community ArtSpace and Art in the Community, along with Art Rental and The Shop, supporting emerging and established diverse artistic voices, including our first 2SLGBTQ+ exhibition at CityScape. North Shore Art Crawl moved to October, registering over a dozen new participating artists. Arts in the Garden continued to evolve, strengthening access and financial support for musicians, artists, and performers. Arts Education continued to thrive, with Camps creatively supporting kids 6-11. Youth/Adult arts education found its audience again after pandemic impacts waned, with refreshed programming including fundamental classes and creative escape workshops. The new Date Nights invited friends, companions, and community to engage in hands-on creative fun at CityScape. North Shore Culture Compass flourished, receiving three awards acknowledging the value of this important digital online hub map from the District of North Vancouver, District of West Vancouver, and Heritage BC. The Navigators Education Guide was launched, and we continued to work with the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations on representing their language and culture. Collaboration with community partners on programme delivery continued including City of North Vancouver’s Studio in the City youth summer employment programme; Rhythm & Word and Art & Mycology programmes at Mountainside Secondary, supporting youth at risk; and the return of community events with artist engagement activities. We participated in the first Sea to Sky Arts Council group exhibition, ‘Diving In: Turning Trash into Treasure’, that brought awareness to ocean and lake pollution. We worked with the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission to help define how we can better work collaboratively to deliver cultural services in our community. Considering our strategic focus of improving organizational sustainability, we received a Canada Council grant to hire a digital consultant to investigate how to maximize our workflows through improved digital systems. With a plan now outlined, we are in the process of raising funds to implement a Constituent Relationship Management system, a big step forward for our organization. We are thankful to receive another resilience supplement from the Province of BC through the BC Arts Council that filled financial gaps from reduced earned and private sector revenues; we are grateful to our ongoing and new funders. Moving forward, with rising costs in programming and administration, we need to increase our sponsor and donor contributions to maintain programming levels and keep participant fees accessible. Thanks to new and returning members, we had a small increase in membership numbers this year. To support the goal of returning to pre-pandemic membership levels, we’ve added new benefits, including arts education discounts. I want to thank our amazing staff and key contractors who make everything we do possible. This year we had several staff changes: Danna Briscoe took over from Maureen Watt as Administrative Coordinator; Saghi Ehteshamzadeh replaced LeighAnne Niehaus as Exhibitions Manager; Star Horn took over the marketing roles from Andy Warner and Stefanie Wysota; and Anu Backman took over Financial Services from Susanna Ordonez and Val Mason. Big thanks to the Board of Directors, especially the Executive Committee, Don Rutherford, Kathleen Whyte, Katie Rodgers, and Anne-Marie Lawrence, who do so much to run the Board and support the ED position. Thanks also to the volunteers, artists, instructors, members, partners, patrons, and funders who believe in our vision and support our goals. It is with a heavy heart I write this final report as I am leaving North Van Arts in early October after 7 years as executive director. It’s been my immense privilege to lead this incredible team of innovative, talented creatives to accomplish great feats with limited resources. I am proud of every programme and project we’ve presented. I want to recognize North Shore Culture Compass as a shining example of what is possible when you dream big. Thanks to Michelle Richard for all her support to make the Culture Compass possible and for being my grant writing partner. Thanks to Don Rutherford for his work as Board Chair, understanding so very well how to support the ED to help them shine. I will miss all of you and look forward to watching from afar as this organization continues to bridge cultures and build strong and healthy communities through the arts. Turning Trash into Treasure (Diving In) August 6 – September 3, 2022

ARTISTS Michael Binkley, Cori Creed, Monica Gewurz, Arne Gutman, Sarah Haxby, Cath Hughes, Cary Lopes, Paulo Lopes, Liz Nankin, Joe Suave, Karen Yaremkewich First ever travelling environmental art exhibition with works by 11 artists as part of the Sea to Sky Arts Council Alliance in partnership with Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans, Return-It, and local artists. The artists from North Vancouver to Pemberton were selected to represent local arts councils and create unique pieces of art from a range of objects recovered through clean-up dives at local lakes and ocean sites. Their creativity and ingenuity turned what would otherwise be trash into treasure – giving the waste a second life. These eleven artists were given objects like beverage cans, sunglasses, golf balls, vape cartridges, plastic oars, and more that was collected from our oceans. From these everyday objects, abstract, surreal, and representational artwork was created.

Volver [To Return, To Become] October 7 - November 12, 2022

ARTISTS Michelle Bourget Morales, Carlos Colín, Pilar Mehlis, Vanessa Mercedes Figueroat, Teo Monsalve, Ximena Veláquez Volver (to return, to become) shared immigrationrelated viewpoints of Latin American artists in Vancouver. The artists’ back-and-forward relationships with Canada and their countries of origin seeped into their work. Their physical mobility parallels their identity in constant flux, becoming their very unique hybrid-selves. Artists express the complexities that arise from moving across borders and becoming an immigrant of Latin American heritage. The works in Volver (to return, to become) offered visitors a personal connection to the sensation of feeling foreign and becoming someone else. Loss, dislocation, exoticism, and cultural hybridity were some themes explored in this exhibition.

Anonymous Art Show

November 25 - December 17, 2022 The 19th Anonymous Art Show displayed original artwork from emerging and established artists. Over 353 local artists created 738 original artworks for North Van Art’s annual festive fundraiser. All art was on 8” x 8” canvases or wood panel. Proceeds from this fundraiser support ongoing North Van Arts’ programmes and projects while showcasing local artists. Artists remain anonymous until their work sells for $100 each, with the artist and North Van Arts each sharing 50% of the sale. Once sold, the art was removed from the wall, revealing the artist’s name. North Van Arts: 2022 Anonymous Art Show

To fold; To fault

February 17 - March 25, 2023 ARTISTS Vitória Monteiro, Keimi Nakashima-Ochoa, Aynaz Parkas To fold; To fault featured the works of three interdisciplinary artists who pushed the boundaries of contemporary fibre-based mediations. The exhibition explored the theme of creative labour as a form of knowledge production, with each artist presenting their unique perspectives on translating and presenting bodies of knowledge through their art. The exhibition was an exercise in changing the way knowledge is shared, taking knowledge systems that are usually presented as separate branches and presenting them as something that is shared, interdependent, and easy to experience. The artists used materials mostly made of plant and animal fibre (pieces that are usually labelled as crafts) and presented them as contemporary art in formal art spaces, looking to both break down and reimagine the boundaries between “art” and “craft.”

Speaking in Skins and Skirts March 31 – May 13, 2023

ARTISTS Elizabeth Dancoes, Eleanor Hannan, Jane Kenyon, Jude Neale

Queer Bash was an exhibition of 2SLGBTQ+ community members’ works exploring the juxtapositions of violence and visibility, prejudice in pride festivals, and the word bash: defined as both a celebration and a condemnation depending on its use. The goal of this show was to exhibit unique, dynamic work that brings to the light the resiliency of a community.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Curator’s Tour, June 3

Speaking in Skins and Skirts was an exhibition featuring the works of two textile artists and two poets; one medium sparked the other in a confluence of ideas and inspiration. These artists found themselves revisiting themes of femaleness and autonomy through mythology, narrative, figurative exploration, or abstract expression. Decades of friendship and artistic expression have allowed them to persevere in the face of heartbreak, hopelessness, and rage.

EXHIBITIONS

DISTRICT FOYER GALLERY In partnership with the District of North Vancouver we present the work of local artists in the municipal hall as part of our Art in the Community programme. The programme enables artists to gain exposure and experience the professional orchestration of an exhibition in a public environment. It also exposes the public to art in non-traditional environments. This public exhibition space allows for 2D and 3D displays.

Pull Together, Pull Through ARTISTS Bonnie Adie, Leslie Barnes, Monique Choptuik, Anni Hunt, Elaine Hunter, Elizabeth Janzen, Catherine Nicholls, Jean Prescott, Katie Rainwater, Brigitte Red, Melanie Zdan Johnson In March of 2020, members of the North Shore Needle Arts Guild were locked down along with the rest of the province. While members are diverse in their knowledge base, professional backgrounds, and needlework techniques, they were not skilled in the technology used to meet virtually. Together they got the hang of meeting via Zoom which allowed them to continue learning, inspiring each other, and sharing the love of the art form that had brought them together in the first place. As the pandemic continued to isolate the most vulnerable, North Shore Needle Arts Guild pulled together and pulled through, exploring and sharing their ideas on 4 different subjects over the course of 2 years, Parts 1, 2, and 3 were exhibited over the past year.

Part 1: Scrolls

October 20, 2022 – January 17, 2023 A scroll is historically a roll of paper, parchment, or fabric used to communicate information. A scroll has traditionally contained words or pictures, but the North Shore Needle Arts members were challenged to use the long and often thin format of a historical scroll along with needle and thread to express themselves and communicate their own message.

Part 2: Pojagi

January 19 – April 18, 2023 The pojagi; an ancient Korean textile art form that is both beautiful and utilitarian. A pojagi (po) is a cloth that is used to wrap, carry, or store things. The use of wrapping cloths was first recorded almost 2,000 years ago. They were used by everyone in Korean society – from aristocrats to peasants. Needle Arts Guild members were challenged to explore how they could use and create pojagi.

Part 3: Boro

April 19 – July 18, 2023 From the Japanese boroboro, meaning something tattered or repaired, Boro refers to the practice of reworking and repairing textiles through piecing, patching, and stitching to extend their use. Worn areas of cloth are patched or older garments cut up and joined using running stitches. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, boro garments were handed down through many generations of rural families. Guild members were challenged to create artworks that honour this tradition and the spirit of thrift.

ARTIST

In this exhibition Kirsten used familiar materials of fabric and thread to weave stories. For Kirsten, textile art is the perfect medium to portray intricate details such as those found in gardens, both real and imaginary. Detailed elements of each piece entice viewers closer for an intimate experience of the materials’ colours and textures.

Split Limbs / Gentle Body

December 9, 2022 - March 7, 2023 ARTIST Margaret Joba-Woodruff In Split Limbs / Gentle Body, both traditional and experimental printmaking techniques were used to explore connections between the artist’s battle with chronic eczema and how it related their own bodily presence on the lands they reside on as a guest. The prints act as an allegory of skin as an imagined barrier between the body and the land; a porous membrane which often upholds the illusion of human bodies as separate from other natural bodies.

Margaret Joba-Woodruff Skin Shedders Arbutus, 2022

All but absent from history March 9 – June 21, 2023 ARTIST Alessandra Abballe All but absent from history explored the structure of adventure narratives: how women who are excluded from these stories claim space and agency, and the importance of representation in writing. As a point of departure, Abballe investigates writer Joseph Campbell’s text The Hero with a Thousand Faces, in which the author discusses his theories on the archetypal hero and the characteristics of “the journey”.

ANNUAL REPORT

Abballe renegotiates the terms of “the hero’s journey” through the exploration of marginalised and omitted female narratives, both fictional and biographical. Turning their attention to the writing and narratives of women, the work in this exhibition visually maps out Abballe’s research through texts and imagery.

I learned so much from Surnoor [Intro to Watercolour]; his teaching style was both informative and nurturing. He broke sketching and painting down to simple to follow basic steps that allowed the class to progress from a simple ball and shade sketch to complete paintings. My abilities grew with each class, and I’ve gained a love of sketching and have continued to create since the class ended.

Artists work side-by-side with participants, bringing their knowledge and practice to the activities, allowing the experience to be directed by the youth. Community engaged art practice is effective in facilitating self-expression in socially marginalized communities, challenging stereotypes and stigmas, and strengthening community bonds and social relationships. North Van Arts has offered this unique programme in partnership with School District #44 and Mountainside Secondary School since 2018.

ART & MYCOLOGY Art & Mycology uses arts-based experiences to help promote the health and well-being of youthat-risk through the exploration of fungi. The guiding principle is to connect young people to nature, while building self-awareness and self-esteem. In 20222023, students learned through forays; olfactory play; soundwalks; Indigenous ethnobotany; taxonomy; species identification; and designing & making mushroom costumes; making wooden stilts to participate in the Feathers & Fungi parade during Arts in the Garden. MUSIC THERAPY

Music therapy involves using a person’s responses and connections to music to encourage positive changes in mood and overall well-being. Music therapy can include creating music with instruments of all types, singing, moving to music, or just listening to it. North Van Arts has offered music therapy in partnership with the School District #44 alternate school since 2002.

RHYTHM & WORD Facilitated by Calista Switzer, BMT, MTA, MT-BC, registered music therapist. Rhythm & Word provides opportunities to strengthen students academically, emotionally, and socially by creating a diverse learning environment where people are supported, respected, and challenged. In 2022-2023, the Music Therapist offered guitar, vocals, hip hop/rap/EDM, rock band, and song writing in individual and group sessions. Programme participants develop and improve fundamental social skills such as listening, communication, teamwork, cooperation, leadership, anger management, trust, respect, and positive self-expression. Having a music therapy programme provides a supportive and creative outlet for some of the most vulnerable members of our society. It’s an opportunity for them to thrive and reach their full potential as contributing members of the community. Participants in Rhythm & Word perform at the school’s year-end assembly in June. Rhythm & Word video created June 2023

It provides youth ages 1518 with opportunities to apprentice in the arts throughout the City. In 2022, eight youth musicians busked in public spaces throughout their community, while enriching their musical education through music workshops, recording experience, and showcasing their work in a final concert that took place August 26 at Civic Plaza. The youth raised over $800 through busking, which they donated to the North Shore Women’s Centre.

I am an avid gardener and the gardens did not disappoint , but an unexpected delight was the music, which I thoroughly enjoyed without exception. It was an uplifting experience. Most importantly to meet strangers who appreciate the same things I do. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, open. This is a WONDERFUL community event. The generosity of host gardeners, inviting strangers into their personal oasis, allows those of us living in smaller spaces to experience the grandeur and beauty of these incredible gardens. Also the opportunity to experience live music and art in these outstanding settings was magical. Thank you ... for creating such an exceptional experience.

As a fundraiser for the North Shore Culture Compass, the calendars sold for $20 each at 8 vendors across the North Shore. Beginning in 2021, we also produced 5’ x 7’ folded art cards with the images, sharing the profit from card sales with the artists. The art cards are timeless, and will continue to sell as long as limited edition inventory remains. 1,000 calendars are printed annually,

ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR | ENDOWMENTS Board Chair Annual Report 2022-2023 Creativity. It’s at the heart of everything North Van Arts promotes while also at the heart of everything North Vân Arts does internally. The creativity of the staff was mirrored in the exhibitions that were presented in CityScape for the 202223 season. From Pushing Boundaries to Queer Bash to the very exciting Art Rental exhibits, North Van Arts demonstrated its commitment to new and emerging artists while allowing the curatorial staff to animate the space. Community art spaces in the District Municipal Hall and Lynn Valley Library were true showcases for the varied talents of North Shore artists. The exhibit catalogue for 2023-24 promises to be just as exciting. Creativity also shone through staff working with the many ups and downs of funding. From rapidly shifting the breadth of Culture Compass (to meet funding availability) to working within constrained budgets to put on the best summer camps ever (completely sold out). Not to mention the creativity required to rapidly adjust for advertising glitches with Arts in the Garden to produce an outstanding event over a glorious weekend in May. All of it achieved amidst significant staff turnover. We end the year in a neutral financial position thanks largely to the fiscal creativity of Executive Director Nancy Cottingham Powell. While we have noted it before in this report, the Board continues to appreciate the tremendous energy, skill and perspectives Nancy brings to her role everyday. The Board was pleased to welcome three new members in 2022-23, Dina Sadeghi, Donne Oseen and Jen Adams. Jen was only able to stay a part of her term before relocating with her family to London England. She has promised to keep us in mind on her return. We were also sad to lose the talents of Kate Galicz who resigned for personal reasons. On behalf of the entire Board, I want to express our appreciation for the incredible support of the City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission, B.C. Arts Council and the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, and to all those in our community who work so hard to support the arts. Don Rutherford Chair, Board of Directors

ENDOWMENTS The North Vancouver Community Arts Council Scholarship at Capilano University, was established in 1988 to support students in visual and performing arts programmes at Capilano University. Each year the university selects a student to receive the scholarship to further their education. The North Vancouver Community Arts Council Children & Youth Arts Fund was established in 1993 through the North Shore Community Foundation. This fund offsets costs for children and youth to participate in North Van Arts programmes.
