North Vancouver Community Arts Council Annual Report
2021-2022 issue 53
The purpose of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council is to enable emerging and professional artists in all disciplines, to bridge cultures, and to build strong and healthy communities through the arts. The Society aims to provide opportunities for artists and the broader community through programmes, projects, exhibitions, and cultural events throughout the North Shore; and advocate for arts and culture on behalf of our community.
CORE VALUES
Ensuring accessibility to all community members; Encouraging artistic understanding and development; Promoting an understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage and diversity of this region, and supporting collaboration.
Since 1969, North Van Arts has been planning and programming activities on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səlilwətaɬ communities in exhibitions, presenting the work of local First Nations artists; in arts education, offering classes led by Indigenous artist/instructors; and in events, working with local Indigenous knowledge keepers and artists who generously share stories and techniques. We are privileged to work with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation in the development of the North Shore Culture Compass, in our efforts at presenting the land in a manner that respects the history of the original occupants and in a manner that acknowledges the reconciliation currently taking place in our combined nations. We look forward to continuing on this path of learning and witnessing the dynamic cultures of Indigenous people.

CONTENTS
In 2021-22 we continued to look at ways to align our mandate, strategic goals, and community needs to deliver meaningful programmes supporting people, providing creative outlets, and building understanding for the value of community and a sense of place. Reports continue to show the value of arts & culture in our day to day lives, and positive benefits of participation in cultural activities, improving our health, sense of satisfaction, and community connections. We see the important role the sector plays in bringing community together to tackle challenging subjects like equity, inclusion, and truth & reconciliation, providing safe space for diverse communities to share and learn from each other. Despite all our achievements as a sector, we are still underfunded and considered a frill by many. We continue to advocate for the value of the arts to help everyone lead more meaningful, inspired, fun lives and hope that stable funding levels catch up to our immense capacity to imagine a better future with creativity and compassion at its core.
Throughout the year our strategic priorities of inclusion and accessibility; new audiences and demographics; organizational sustainability; and post Covid-19 recovery, guided our decisions regarding programming, marketing & outreach, partnerships & development, advocacy, and equity, inclusion & accessibility.
We showcased a wide variety of exhibitions both at CityScape Community ArtSpace and Art in the Community, along with our roster of Art Rental and Shop artists, reflecting diverse artistic voices and supporting artists through royalty payments. Arts in the Garden returned in-person to rave reviews, this year adding a Feather & Fungi event in partnership with Wild Bird Trust of BC at Maplewood Flats and the North Shore Neighbourhood House’s Edible Garden Project. Both these free venues complimented the 10 private ticketed gardens, increasing accessibility. Along with diverse visual artists and musicians, we introduced dance and spoken word artists to showcase a wider range of artistic expression.
After great consideration and research regarding pandemic and flu season trends, we moved North Shore Art Crawl permanently to an October weekend.
We were pleased to work with partners in delivering special projects, such as the Vancouver Mural Festival’s Edgemont Village murals; and the City of North Vancouver Mayor’s Social Resiliency Collective’s North Van City Mosaic Project, with the public art piece, sharing community Covid-19 experiences, installed on Grand Boulevard.
Anonymous Art Show online sales continued to reach new audiences, promoting local artists across the country. Arts Education Kids Camps excelled, engaging young people to see their world through a creative lens. Rhythm & Word Music Therapy programme and Art & Mycology continued to support youth at risk at Mountainside Secondary.
North Shore Culture Compass inspired more engagement with cultural assets across the region, using place-based technology to shine a light on not only the major cultural assets but hidden gems and important cultural stories, language, and art of the Indigenous peoples of this land.
We have some financial challenges in front of us, with earned revenues still fluctuating due to continued pandemic impacts. We hope to achieve our major sponsorship goals for Culture Compass and CityScape exhibitions and to garner new private foundation support for Arts Education and other programmes we strive to keep accessible.
Thanks to everyone who maintained or purchased a new membership, though overall our membership numbers were down. This seems to be a trend across non-profit sectors during the pandemic. We have plans to launch a membership drive to restore this critical source of earned revenues to pre-Covid levels.
I want to thank our amazing staff of creative, thoughtful, talented folks who make everything we do possible. This year we said goodbye to Samantha Newton and welcomed Katherine Gear Chambers (a multi-year summer position) into the role of Events and Community Development Manager. Maureen Watt joined us as Administrative Coordinator, taking over volunteer management, rocking recruitment! Stephanie Blundell replaced Joyelle Goldbard as Arts Education Manager, bringing a wealth of knowledge from her work in England. Leo Dittmer, Culture Compass summer position, stayed on to take on map maintenance, outreach, and social media.
Big thanks to the Board of Directors, especially the executive team: Don Rutherford, Katie Rodgers, and Anne-Marie Lawrence who do so much to run the Board and support the ED position.
I also want to thank the volunteers, artists, instructors, members, partners, patrons, and funders who believe in our vision and support our goals. After 53 years, we are still a small organization making a big impact, with community building at the heart of everything we do.

‘Stalkaya – Ḵ ’elhmáy /X ápay ay’ refers to the traditional name of the Dakota Bear Forest (Stalkaya) followed by the two words for yellow and red cedar. “Stalkaya” included “SANCTUARY”, a 360° immersive film experience taking you to the heart of a forest that has existed since the last Ice Age. Tsawaysia Spukwus and Sesemiya- Tracy Williams had pieces displayed alongside the film.
The collection of work, curated by Cease Wyss, explored Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) people’s relationship to cedar and to the ancient forests that house these sacred trees. Sunshine Coast’s Mark Benson’s large-scale photographs were also included in the show.

ARTISTS
Ilze Bebris, Kiku Hawkes, Marcia Pitch, Ruth Scheuing, Catherine M. Stewart
Five female artists explored the reality of inhabiting a woman’s body, surprising fashion, and space travel through assemblage, photography, weaving, textiles, printmaking and media. The artists celebrated achievements of women in science, played with notions of bodies in space and looked at how the world of fashion forms invisible barriers stopping women from becoming equals in society.

12 images created by local artists depicting North Shore scenes. The You Are Here calendar tells the story of the North Shore Region through artistically rendered images of locations, places, or scenes that are recognizably in North Vancouver or West Vancouver, on the land of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and s ə lilw ə ta ɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The works in this exhibition complement the North Shore Culture Compass to showcase the history, traditions, culture, and diversity of the North Shore.
Nomi Stricker: ELSEWHERE
November 4, 2021 – January 24, 2022
“My recent oil and mixed media works depict curious, dream-like scenes. They are inspired by sites explored while traveling abroad (prepandemic) and by landscapes discovered around British Columbia. Memories, imaginings, and my own photography are fused, morphing into surreal abstract landscape. These unlikely spaces often revisit familiar landscape tropes – with oceans, mountains, forests, and desert terrain meeting my less literal visual language of paint swaths, arcs, and floating forms.” Artist Statement
Mehran Modarres-Sadeghi: Ma Miaeem va Miravim (We Come and Go) February 3 - March 21, 2022
‘Ma Miaeem va Miravim (We Come and Go)’ is an artist book and a series of drawings which translates the artist’s first-grade English book, We Come and Go, from the Dick and Jane series into Persian-English, in which Persian words are written using the Roman alphabet. The phrase ‘Ma Miaeem va Miravim’ in the title is a translation of ‘We Come and Go’ in Persian-English. The coloured illustrations from the children’s book are also reproduced in black and white with some thematic changes and translations. This work poses questions about the preservation of the Persian language amongst generations of Iranian immigrants living in North America.

Lynda Fownes: Windfall
March
24 - May 23, 2022
Lynda Fownes’ earlier work focused on soft sculpture and fibre art. In recent years she has returned to the idea of exploring patterns and textures—in both choice of subject and use of acrylic media. For this show, Lynda Fownes took her inspiration from tree bark. She was drawn to the wealth of pattern variation, such as old/ young bark and inside/outside layers, that nature provides. In between other paintings, she returned to this series over the next two years, resulting in the current collection.

“I am fascinated by the freighters in the harbor of Vancouver as seen from my balcony in Kitsilano, positioning themselves to be loaded or unloaded. The freighters seem to have a human quality about them, the way they move about, constantly being shifted by the tide, in control, yet not in control of which way the tide turns them.” Artist Statement

COMMUNITY ENGAGED PRACTICE AT MOUNTAINSIDE SECONDARY SCHOOL
Artists work side-by-side with participants to determine project progression. In this way, the artists bring their knowledge and practice to the activities, allowing the experience to be directed by the youth. Community engaged art practice is effective in facilitating selfexpression in socially marginalized communities, challenging stereotypes and stigmas, and strengthening community bonds and social relationships.
RHYTHM & WORD
Facilitated by Calista Switzer, music therapist Rhythm & Word provides opportunities to strengthen students academically, emotionally, and socially by creating a diverse learning environment where people are supported, respected, and challenged.
It increases self-awareness, autonomy, self-esteem, and allows for emotional expression, which are not always common things you can find in a high school setting. Programme participants develop and improve fundamental social skills such as listening, communication, teamwork, cooperation, leadership, anger management, trust, respect, and positive selfexpression.
Having a music therapy programme provides a supportive and creative outlet for some of the most vulnerable members of our society, enabling them to thrive and providing an opportunity to reach their full potential as contributing members of the community.
ART & MYCOLOGY
Art & Mycology uses arts-based experiences to help promote the health and well-being of youth-at-risk through the exploration of fungi. The programme was introduced to Mountainside Secondary School in Fall 2018 and has met with great success. The guiding principle is to connect young people to nature, while building self-awareness and self-esteem.
ARTISTS
Lead artists: Isabelle Kirouac: choreographer, dancer, circus performer and Willoughby Arevalo: mycologist, artist, educator. T’uy’tanat-Cease Wyss (Skwxwu7mesh, Sto:lo, IrishMétis, Hawaiian, and Swiss descent) is a regular guest leading foraging tours and forest walks for the students. Cease is an ethno-botanist, traditionally trained by Indigenous Elders.
TESTIMONIAL
Lucas King, Principal of Mountainside Secondary School, writes: “This mycology initiative has provided our students with a unique and safe environment to learn and engage in activities and projects that develop awareness of our natural environment, specifically mycology, through arts-based activities. Working closely with the students, the artists have tailored the program to include more visual and experiential arts, responding to a need to spend time outside, connecting with the natural world and building confidence.”

Sandrine Pelissier, Sophie Babeanu Blake Williams
Public art piece ‘At Home’ is the final stage of the North Van City Mosaic project, one of five projects created by the Mayor’s Healthiest Small City Social Resiliency Collective, formed in June 2020 as a response to COVID-19.
Phase 1: June 2020-October 2021
Digital mosaic facilitated by local visual artist Sandrine Pelissier and expressive art therapist Sophie Babeanu. Anyone who lives, works or plays in the City of North Vancouver’ was invited to share their personal COVID-19 stories through words and images on the project’s website. Each of the individual art pieces submitted were combined to create a digital mosaic image. 15th Street & Grand Boulevard, North Vancouver
Created and executed by visual artist Blake Williams. Images and stories shared on the digital mosaic were selected to form a public art piece representing hope and resiliency. Images from the digital mosaic form ceramic tiles, interlaced with the artist’s interpretations, that create the abstract shape of four houses, each socially distanced six feet apart. The public art piece is a commemorative site; a place of gathering and reflection available to the community for the years and generations to come.
The North Van City Mosaic Committee, a sub-committee within the collective, consisted of Mayor Linda Buchanan and representatives from North Van Arts, United Way of the Lower Mainland, North Vancouver Recreation and Culture, Family Services of the North Shore, North Shore Neighbourhood House, and North Van School District 44.

MONICA GEWURZ
Born in Lima, Peru, Monica immigrated to Canada in 1976 where she obtained her Bachelor of Science and Masters in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Throughout her career, Monica has worked in the public and private sector in real estate, land development, environmental and tourism issues, and economic development, and treaty negotiations with First Nations in BC and Alberta. She lives in Vancouver and has traveled extensively throughout the world studying different art forms. In 2017 she obtained her Advanced Study Certificate program, in painting from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She is currently represented by Ukama Gallery and Tofino Contemporary Art Gallery. Her paintings have been exhibited at numerous galleries in BC’s Lower Mainland and are in private collections internationally. She also uses her mixed media art to convey main issues pertaining to the environment to invite dialogue and discussion. As an artist, Monica believes strongly in the multidisciplinary and multicultural potential of the arts council to encourage a broad range of people to participate in culturally enriching programmes and activities. Her artwork can be seen in her North Van Arts member profile.
ANNE-MARIE LAWRENCE
Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Anne-Marie has lived in North Vancouver since 1972. She has been involved in many community organizations such as the North Shore Women’s Centre, United Way Committee for the North Shore, Girl Guides, and the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. With an avid interest in the arts, Anne-Marie has had a membership with the Vancouver Art Gallery since 1983. Anne-Marie sits on the board of North Shore Heritage Preservation Society because she strongly believes in the value of heritage as an expression of cultural identity and supports the retention of heritage structures, integrating with new construction rather than demolition, to retain as much of the original character of the North Shore as is possible.
DAVID LITTLE
David obtained a law degree from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia, and has since practiced business law in Vancouver. Involved with the business and legal community, David has worked on many complex projects such as hospitals and educational institutions. Many projects involve multiple parties with private and public objectives to be reconciled. Raising a family with his wife in North Vancouver, he has enjoyed the programming and events of the NVCAC, notably the art rental programme and the Anonymous Art Show. David is supportive of the organization’s efforts in bringing art to the community in interesting and unexpected ways, creating a feeling that North Vancouver is a real community where people of all ages live, work, create and grow.
EFFAT MIRNIA
Born and raised in Iran, Effat was part of an art-loving family. From childhood, she expressed her feelings and thoughts through her art – painting, writing and poetry became a form of release for her. From a very early age, Effat volunteered with several organizations: she taught underprivileged children working for UNICEF and taught illiterate women in the villages of Iran. In Iran’s Governor House, she worked with immigrants and refugees to help them lead a successful life in a new country. Effat obtained a Bachelor in Communications and a Bachelor of Arts in Design. Since moving to Canada in 1983, she has worked in diverse fields such as interior design and customer service while raising her two daughters. She has fully integrated herself within

her community and has volunteered her time with autistic children as well as organizations such as North Vancouver Community Art Council. She is currently volunteering with Immigrant Services Society (ISS of BC) as a facilitator and a member of the advisory committee for refugee and immigrant women who are new to Canada. She also volunteers as a counselor with the North Shore Seniors Peer Support and Hamrahan Iranian Seniors Support. Her creative oil and acrylic paintings vary from landscapes and architecture to portraits and realistic life subjects. Art has not only become a creative outlet for Effat but a true passion in life.
KAREN A. MOOLA
Karen is passionate about the intersection of culture, arts and community and seeks ways to foster this passion, both professionally and personally. She works as an independent consultant, providing strategic planning and engagement services. Her experience includes arts and culture consulting projects in BC. She is dedicated to community and professional service, having served as the Partnership Director for Ballet BC Up, a young patrons group designed to develop philanthropy and a love for the arts among young professionals. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Education without Borders and the Planning Institute of British Columbia. She enjoys North Shore arts, culture and recreational experiences with her family.
SANDRINE PELISSIER
Sandrine obtained her Masters of Natural Science degree at the University of Rouen, France and has been working as a professional visual artist since she moved to Canada in 1998. She is very involved in the community, as co-founder of the North Shore Arts Crawl and co-founder of a weekly life-drawing group. Furthering her own career as a professional visual artist and instructor, Sandrine has extensive experience in marketing and events planning. She has a keen interest in community art projects that make the North Shore an exciting place to live, with many opportunities to connect the general public with artists.
KATIE RODGERS
Katie is a North Vancouver-based artist and a member of North Van Arts. She can frequently be found exploring the trails near Mt Seymour with her energetic twin boys. From 2003-2012, Katie was the co-owner of a healthy meal delivery company (with fresh grab-and-go cafes). Since then, she has applied her skills in business development, accounting, strategic planning, and marketing services for organizations operating across several industries (including forestry, property management, modular structures, food services, and First Nations youth training). Katie backs her experience up with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Guelph and a Certified Management Accountants designation.
DON RUTHERFORD
Don is a long-time member of the North Shore community – both personally and professionally. He and his wife established their home in Deep Cove in 1985 and went on to raise two boys in the Cove. Now empty nesters we continue to reside in our Deep Cove Cottage and enjoy every minute of living in this unique community. After graduation from the University of B.C. School of Social Work in 1982, Don worked for several years in the field of adolescent offenders, assessment and treatment planning. In 1988, he joined the North Shore Neighbourhood House as Executive Director, where he remained for almost 25 years. I retired in 2011 to enjoy “a life of leisure” which entails a never-ending list of chores, gardening, trying to learn to paint (watercolours), walking the dog, and a wee bit of consulting to a couple of non-profit organizations in the area of labour relations, collective bargaining and public relations.
KATHLEEN WHYTE
Kathleen is the Senior Manager of Human Resources at Family Services of the North Shore. She is also an active volunteer in the community and has volunteered primarily with the music program at Handsworth Secondary School, the West Vancouver Youth Band, and Highlands United Church. While originally from Vancouver, she has lived on the North Shore for the past 30 years and has raised her 3 children in North Vancouver. Though not an artist, she considers herself an active supporter of the arts through her frequent attendance at live theatre, musical performances, art crawls, and the like. Kathleen has a BA in Psychology from the University of British Columbia and her CPHR designation.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Board Chair Report October 2022
The life of North Van Arts, as with everyone’s, continues to be shaped by a virulent virus that will not go away and may well be with us for years to come.
The anticipated “return to normal” contains some elements of the normal of three years ago, but only a few. We have returned to in-person opening receptions in CityScape, arts education programmes have been building again, summer art camps have returned with a flourish, and art rental has regained momentum. Anonymous Art Show, our premier fundraising event, offered as both in-person and on-line was a great success. In-person Art in the Garden was in full bloom this past spring and the Art Crawl is back for 2022 (now in October).
Through it all, the Board has been very impressed with and appreciative of staff’s ability and desire to shift, try, modify, and adapt to the needs of the arts community and the ever-changing realities for artists and public. The Board expressly wants to thank Nancy for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the organization. Her energy, community building skills and expertise is very much appreciated. Our volunteers have been extraordinary in their commitment to North Van Arts, and we thank them for making so much of what we do possible.
We end 2021-22 in a neutral financial position. However, as with so many things in the non-profit arts world, storm clouds are never very far away, and things can change about as quickly as the west coast weather or the arrival of a new virus variant. We remain confident that the innovative, unique, and highly useful Culture Compass will receive the local support and sponsorship necessary to keep it operational at its current level.
I am pleased to welcome this past year Karen Moola and Kathleen Whyte to the Board, both for the initial one-year term. I look forward to their further involvement in the years to come. Thanks to David Little, Sandrine Pelissier, and Effat Mirnia who are all stepping down at the 2022 Annual General Meeting. I can’t thank them enough for their years of contribution that supported our organization.
Art in all its forms is a really a personal thing, best viewed, felt, and experienced with all the senses, in-person and not on a screen. North Van Arts, its Board and staff are committed to making that happen in a safe and respectful way.
Don Rutherford Chair, Board of Directors
