In 2004, Anil asked a simple question, “How can we help reduce the number of single-use plastic bags we are drowning in?”, which led to the creation of the product line that started the company – reusable bags. From that day forward, every reusable bag sold had the potential to, and did, replace thousands of plastic bags.

From that success, the natural progression for the business was driven by the idea that “traditional thinking” can change. If a society can shift to a more sustainable option for bags, then why not for other products too? Single-use food service items are used day-in-day-out worldwide and produce a huge amount of waste. Anil and his team knew there had to be a better option, so they sought out manufacturers who aligned with their goals to reduce waste and used rapid-growth resources to alleviate the impact on the environment. From then on, they have been continuously growing and looking for the best solutions to address the growing disposal concerns caused by traditional polystyrene foam and plastic food service items.

Eco Guardian has won many awards over the years, but winning the 2022 National Sobeys Plastic Waste Challenge was the most prestigious of all for Anil.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

There are many crucial elements contributing to the success of a grassroots charity like Abuse Hurts. One extremely integral part is the support of local businesses; and due to the ongoing and enthusiastic support of Market Brewing Company in Newmarket, Abuse Hurts is pleased to name the business as their Champion of the Month for February of 2023.

Market Brewing Company has hosted several fundraising initiatives at their location in support of the charity, including Holiday Toy Drives, a Christmas in July event, weekly Bingo tournaments in December of 2022 and even an upcoming Euchre tournament happening on February 25th of this month.

Offering their space to the charity for the various events over the past couple of years is one thing, but the personal touch and support from owners Bill Gianopoulos, Piers Simpkin, and Josh Uttley is what makes Market Brewing Company’s involvement so special.

From emceeing events to creating beautiful promotional ads to help promote the events, Bill, Piers and Josh show their personal interest in advocating for Abuse Hurts to their clientele and the surrounding community…and greatly contribute towards the success of the events.

“We consider the owners and staff of Market Brewing Company as friends of Abuse Hurts,” says Helena Kameka, President of charity, “as we always feel the sincerity behind their efforts to support charities and give back to the community. We’re very grateful for their support.”

On January 6th, Neighbour stopped by the o ces of Abuse Hurts to snap a photo of 2 of the winners of the Q107 Toronto Festive 50/50 in support of Abuse Hurts. Kathleen & Randy Wyatt picked up the cheque for $186,812.00 on behalf of the 14 people that pooled their money together purchasing 1300 tickets. They will each be receiving $13,373 - what a great way to start the year!

Do You Know a Lonely Senior?

January and February are very lonely months for many older persons. Following the holiday season, which is usually such an active and social time, many seniors often spend days/weeks without having any meaningful conversation with another person. Imagine turning the television and the radio on, just so you can hear someone else’s voice - as many older, isolated older persons do.

Not so long ago, I met Janet (82), who had lived happily in her home in Aurora for 35 years, including the last 8 years after her husband, Robert, had passed. But, Janet’s life changed when she had to go to Southlake Hospital for a hip operation. This operation for Janet had serious repercussions—physically and psychologically. She turned inward into herself and she spent 2 months in the hospital.

Finally, Janet was taken home by her family whose members lived some distance away. Mostly alone then, she became depressed and started to experience anxiety attacks. She withdrew from life and the things she loved. Janet did not leave her home for weeks and had only the radio or the television to keep her marginally stimulated. Janet was terribly lonely. Sometimes loneliness is not a choice but a reality forced on us. Life changing events such as operations, retirement, the death of a loved one, and the loss of independence as a result of poor health, all may affect our well-being—physically and psychologically.

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Investing to make Newmarket even better

We consistently hear from residents and visitors that Newmarket is an amazing place – one that balances small-town charm with bigger city amenities. This is the result of being strategic when we set priorities and allocate the resources to make them happen. It’s a balance forged each year in the cold dark days of February when we finalize the Town’s budget.

For much of this month, Newmarket staff and Council will be focused on the Town’s 2023 Budget. It is shaping up to be a very challenging budget. With inflation at its highest level in 40 years, everything costs more, but we know that delaying investment could be even more expensive in the long run. Saving today only to pass on the burden to the next generation is a false economy.

We’ve kept up momentum on our priorities through the pandemic, while other municipalities took a pause and we’re now well-positioned in our recovery, demonstrating the value of continuing to invest. We know we need to invest to keep our roads and infrastructure from crumbling. The crowds in our parks and on the trails during the pandemic also clearly showed how much we value being able to get outside and enjoy our public spaces.

We’ve managed escalating costs in past years. This year’s tax increase may be higher than in recent years, but we’re determined to keep Newmarket competitive in the short and long term, while still keeping taxes below the GTA average.

This approach has enabled us to build an amazing community, not merely an adequate town. As we address today’s challenges, we want to invest in Newmarket –invest in parks, trails, cultural programming, and places to come together – to build a vibrant community for the future where people want to live, work, and build a business.

Budget Tips from The Financial Moment

Managing your money is understanding your needs and goals and creating a positive relationship with money. Here are some quick tips to get you on the right track.

1. Create Goals: Determine short and long term goals. (e.g. pay down debt, take a trip, or fund your child’s education)

2. Plan for the unexpected. Create an emergency fund in anticipation for those times that throw you of course.

3. Make it easy. Track your expenses to see where your money is going and set reminders for bill payments and automate savings plan.

4. Have Fun. Establish a money date night with your partner or friend. Use this time to reflect on how things are going, and to make change.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a type of holistic, natural healthcare system that dates back at least 2,500. TCM is “holistic” and “natural” because it stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms and considers all aspects of a patient’s life, rather than just obvious signs or symptoms. TCM practitioners view the body as a complex network of interconnected parts, rather than separate systems or organs. TCM treatments aim to correct imbalances in the body and primarily work in three major ways:

A TCM treatment usually includes either one of or a combination of medicinal herbs, nutritional therapies, physical treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, massage, or Tuina, and therapeutic exercises such as Tai Chi and related breathing techniques..

MAYOR MRAKAS

Coming together to celebrate Black history and excellence February is Black History Month, and it’s an incredibly important time to celebrate and learn about the important contributions that Black Canadians have made to communities across Canada, including here in Aurora. This year, the Town of Aurora has partnered with the Aurora Black Community Association (ABC) to bring residents and the community exciting opportunities throughout February to learn and celebrate Aurora’s Black community and our diverse and rich cultures.

I highly encourage residents to take part in the celebrations and make a concerted effort to learn about Black history in Canada. In addition to celebrating Black history and excellence, Black History Month is also a time to double down on our commitment to ending all forms of racism in our communities and working to build diversity, inclusion and equity into everything that we do.

Later in 2023, I will be hosting a Mayor’s roundtable with leaders from our Black community to better understand how Town programs and services can respond to the needs of community members. More details will be available on the roundtable in the coming months.

In the meantime, you can celebrate Black history and excellence through a number of activities that the Town is supporting, including: the Pan-African Flag Raising at Town Hall, a Black History Gala (featuring keynote speaker, the Honourable Jean Augustine), a Paint and Poetry Night, Diversity on Ice, and more.

For information on all upcoming Black History Month events, visit aurora.ca/blackhistorymonth.

I hope to see you around town at these exciting events!

Julianne Goyette collected more than 1,500 pairs of new socks as a part of this Sock Drive! Pictured here are 3 amazing women, Sandy, Penny & Lynn, who ensured that the socks got to the homes of those in need this past holiday season. They work tirelessly for months to fulfil the wish lists of more than 85 families each year. This year that included 8 refugee families. Some socks also went to Inn From the Cold. Thank you to ALL who donated to keep so many feet warm this winter!

Through their boot campaign, Central York Fire Services donates to various local charities in the community. On December 14th, CYFS made a donation to The Aurora Legion! #goodneighbours

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

I want to start off by thanking all of you who were able to attend my New Year's Levee last month. What a fantastic diverse group we had trekking through Sheppard’s Bush. I enjoyed spending time with all of you afterwards at the York Region Food Network and enjoyed many insightful and informative conversations while sipping hot chocolate. A special thanks to the team at York Region Food Network for hosting us and for all they do for our community. Over the past few weeks in the constituency, I have also had the pleasure of attending numerous other celebrations of the New Year such as Mayor Mrakas New Year’s Levee, Thai Pongal as well as many Lunar New Year events.

February is Black History Month; I would like to recognize the valuable work being done by the Aurora Black Community Association. I especially recognize the outstanding commitment from the founder and president, Phiona Durrant who is also a dedicated small business owner in Aurora. Black history is everyone’s history, it invites us to pay tribute and learn more about the important roles Black Canadians have played in building and shaping a more prosperous, diverse, and inclusive Canada. While Black History Month is a time for learning and celebration, we cannot forget that Black History Month was created in opposition to anti-Black racism, hate, and discrimination. Racism, hate, and discrimination continue to be a reality for many Canadians. On behalf of the government of Canada I urge everyone to learn about Black Canadian history, as we strive to make our country stronger, fairer, and more inclusive.

As always it is my great honor to represent you in Ottawa and I look forward to seeing you at upcoming events throughout Black History Month.

Ace

Woof! I'm Ace - a 4 month old German Shepherd. I like to play with my toys, play in the snow and visit Old Flame Brewery on Main Street! I'm just a baby still and am learning so much everyday - like that my mom does NOT like it when I nibble on her hands with my sharp puppy teeth.

Gryffin

I'm Gry n (short for Gry ndor)! I am a potcake which is a mutt from the islands; I was adopted from Antigua when I was 11 weeks old. I love my family (especially my sister Samantha) and do not like winter or strangers. I am very curious and love to sniff everything in sight! I'm afraid of the wind and have to take medication to calm down when I'm feeling anxious. My best friend is my mom!

Serena

My name is Serena and I'm currently living with my foster mom Rebekah, she was on the cover of this publication in June 2022. I'm 10 months old and I'm looking for my FURRREVER home. If you are looking for a feline friend, check out Michelle’s kitten & cat rescue to find out more information about me!

Daisy

Hi, I'm Daisy! I'm a 9 year old English bulldog. I'm sweet, gentle and love my humans more than anything in the world! I take a lot of naps, but will ALWAYS wake up when it's time to eat.

Tabitha

Meow - I'm Tabitha and I am also living with my foster mom Rebekah! I'm the same age as Serena (10 months old) and I'm looking for my FURRREVER home. If you are looking for a fabulous feline - look no further, I'm your girl. Check out Michelle’s kitten & cat rescue to find out more information about me.

Sophie

I'm Sophie! A nearly 14 year old Himalayan cat (my birthday is in March). My mom says that I am a princess - and she isn't wrong! I like to drink out of the dog bowl and demand that my water be from the fridge. I only like 1 kind of cat food... do not feed me anything else! I sleep all day and meow all night. I love my step daddy and love being spoiled!
