For nearly four decades, Aurora’s own Mike Rathke, owner of MR Menswear on Industrial Parkway South, has been helping men look their best. From business casual to formal wear, weekend apparel to outerwear, his boutique has become a trusted destination for men seeking both style and function. Known for greeting customers with a warm smile—and often a hot espresso—Mike has built more than a store; he has built a community. But behind the polished suits and tailored jackets lies a story of resilience. At just 19 years old, Mike was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. After nearly eight years in recovery, he returned to the menswear industry determined to realize his dream of owning his own shop. In 2007, that dream became reality with the opening of MR Menswear. A decade later, weeks after celebrating 30 years in business, Mike faced another devastating cancer diagnosis. Once again, his community rallied—helping him keep his business alive while he fought for his life.

Today, Mike is not just a two-time cancer survivor; he is a community champion. Owner of one of Aurora’s most celebrated businesses, he has been recognized with a Business Excellence Award (2009), was a finalist for the Chuck Cino Award, Business of the Year Award winner (2009, 2019, and 2024), and was named #1 Men’s Store in The Era Banner’s Readers’ Choice Awards in both 2010 and 2011. These accolades reflect not only his dedication to style and service, but also to the community he calls home. Mike’s giving spirit shines through his long-standing support of causes close to his heart. In addition to raising more than $140,000 for Southlake Health and the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre, a place that has been there for him when he needed it most, he has also supported the MS Society of Canada and numerous local charities. “Unfortunately, there aren’t enough good stories; I am one, and it feels good to give back,” he says.

On October 30, Mike will host his biennial Whiskey, Wine & Menswear Fashion Show at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, benefiting Southlake. An evening that will celebrate resilience, generosity, and the power of coming together. The event promises an evening of fashion, fun, and heartfelt moments, including personal reflections from his wife, daughters, and even his mother, who supported him through his toughest battles. Through his unwavering optimism, generosity, and sharp sense of style, Mike Rathke has become more than a business owner. He is a neighbour, a survivor, and a reminder of the power of community. As friend Steve Hinder puts it: “I wish there were more Mikes in the world.” #GoodNeighbour

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY MPP for Newmarket–Aurora Building Our Community Together

This past month, I tried a little experiment: waking up earlier. On the days I managed—when I didn’t have late-night community events—it worked wonders. Having that quiet time before the day begins gave me a chance to focus, plan, and start the morning without rushing. It’s a small change, but one that truly makes a difference.

Speaking of making a difference, I’m proud to share that our government is investing $255,000 through Ontario’s CCTV Grant Program to support York Regional Police. This funding responds directly to community feedback I received at our Aurora Community Safety Town Hall held March 2024, where residents asked for more CCTV cameras. With this investment, York Regional Police can expand and modernize their surveillance network—helping deter crime and keep families safe.

Another important step forward is in health care. Recently, we announced $848,500 for the Southlake Academic Family Health Team, which will connect up to 2,500 more people in Aurora to primary care. This means more nurse practitioners and interprofessional health providers available to patients right here in our community.

And looking at the bigger picture, Ontario is leading the charge on clean, reliable, and affordable energy. At the national Energy Superpower Summit, our province championed nuclear expansion as part of Canada’s future energy mix. Nuclear is essential to meeting demand, powering our economy, and ensuring we remain energy secure for generations. Sending good wishes to you this Thanksgiving! Good food that fills your table, good health as you work hard, and good times with family and friends. May you have all the best delights in life. Happy Thanksgiving

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy had the pleasure of hosting the Minister of Small Business, Nina Tangri kicking things off at the York Small Business Enterprise Centre to celebrate their 2025 Ontario Summer Company graduates on August 22nd. They met with local business owners and connected with the Central York Chamber of Commerce to talk about supporting growth and opportunity in our community. The day ended with a stroll through Newmarket’s Summerfest, enjoying the energy, creativity, and incredible goods from our local entrepreneurs.

It was a night to remember at Newmarket’s Festival of One Act Plays! The red carpet was rolled out on September 4th for the spectacular opening night of the Festival of One Act Plays — and what an unforgettable evening it was! Guests kicked off the night in style with a lively pre-party filled with delicious food, great music, and warm reunions, as friends and theatre lovers came together after the summer break. Then, the curtains rose for three incredible one-act performances, each one bringing its own magic, laughter, and heart to the stage. It was a true celebration of local talent and live theatre, setting the tone for an exciting festival ahead. Bravo to all the performers and creators who made opening night shine!

25 Years of Natural—Rocky Now Open at Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens

When we think about connecting to nature, most of us picture the scenic moments—weekend hikes, bike rides through the countryside, walks on the beach. But nature isn’t something we need to escape to. She’s already here, all around us: in the warmth of the morning sun, the joy of a new leaf on a houseplant, the resiliency of a dandelion growing through the cracks of a Sidewalk. These aren’t just passing moments. They’re essential. When we pause to notice them, we feel connected, grounded, and so, so alive.

For 25 years, Rocky (formerly Rocky Mountain Soap Co.) has been crafting products made with natural ingredients from their workshop in the Canadian Rockies. Rooted in their connection to the outdoors, owners Karina Birch and Cam Baty were inspired by the idea that everyday moments connect us to nature. What started with just two employees and a handful of formulas, has grown into a trusted Canadian brand offering more than 350 essentials for your face, body, and hair.

Now open at Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens, Rocky’s newest locations are more than places to shop—they’re designed to bring nature indoors. Each store features natural materials and a central sink, where guests can try products, explore textures and aromas inspired by the Canadian wilderness, and hear the stories behind each formula from knowledgeable associates.

From the beginning, Rocky has followed nature’s lead—prioritizing purpose over trends and care over convenience. Today, they continue to turn daily routines into opportunities to connect with the natural world, helping you live Earth Every Day, wherever you are.

Cane’s Woodenware

William Cane, who has the distinction of being Newmarket’s first Mayor, began business in Queensville, where he operated a sawmill. During the 1870’s, however, Cane decided to move his operation to Huron Street (now Davis Drive) and set-up a woodenware factory. By 1885, he operated one of the largest woodenware factories in the province.

He went into partnership with his sons and the business became “William Cane & Sons Manufacturing Company”. They erected a large factory on what is now the north- west corner of Davis and Bayview Parkway. The name of the new business was patterned into the large chimney which dominated the factory building. Cane’s was the largest industry in Newmarket at the end of the nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth. The picture shown here is about 1910 and shows the firm at the height of its prosperity. As an interesting sidenote, notice the size of Davis Drive (then Huron Street) at this time.

The business was eventually known as “United Factories” before it was sold by grandson Howard Cane to Dixon Pencil in the 1930’s. Dixon Pencil operated in Newmarket for many decades. When the business closed, the building stood vacant for awhile before being demolished in 1991. Many who grew up in Newmarket will remember rifling through their garbage dumpster for the not so perfect pencils and other products.

Currently the Dixon Medical Building and its parking lot occupy the property where the factory stood. In addition to its industrial prowess, the Cane family also established a political dynasty in Newmarket with three generations serving as Mayor.

The Regional Municipality of York and Housing York Inc., in partnership with the Town of Newmarket, joined the Providing Instruments for Excellence (PIE) Education Program to help local students gear up for back-to-school! Mayor John Taylor, Chair of Housing York Inc., and City of Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall (who co-launched PIE in 2010) met families at Mulock Village to hand out backpacks filled with school supplies. Since its launch, PIE has provided over 27,500 backpacks across the GTA, giving kids the tools they need for educational success. This year marks the very first time York Region and HYI have joined the initiative and what a heartwarming way to start! Here’s to stronger communities, brighter futures, and a school year filled with success.

A huge congratulations to Fiona Archer for organizing an absolutely incredible event that brought together individuals with diverse abilities from Kerry's Place, Community Living Central York, and many other amazing organizations. Fiona has been a dedicated supporter and advocate for Kurtis, a young man with diverse abilities, for the past 12 years. Her passion and commitment inspired her to create this special afternoon filled with dancing, delicious food, and meaningful connections. A heartfelt thank-you to the generous sponsors and the Aurora Legion for donating the space — your support helped make this event a huge success and a beautiful celebration of community and inclusion!

3 TERRIFYING NIGHTS

Tips for motorists:

Keep these tips in mind so everyone can have a Spook-tacular Halloween when trick-or-treating.

• Drive with caution and slow down when driving on Halloween.

• Pay attention for children who may cross the road without looking.

Tips for trick-or-treating:

• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk with a group or a trusted adult and organize a meeting spot in case anyone gets lost.

• Use caution when crossing the street and remember to use designated crosswalks when possible.

• When going from house to house, don’t criss-cross back and forth across the street. Work your way up one side of the street.

• Wear costumes and clothing that are reflective or bright in colour or have reflective tape.

• Bring a flashlight. This will increase your visibility to those driving at night.

• Have an emergency plan. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 and what to do in case they become lost or need help when trick-or-treating.

The Glue That Binds Us

Not-for-profit organizations are at the heart of a healthy and vibrant community. They bring people together, create connections, and care for the most vulnerable among us. These organizations often fill in the gaps where public services and the private sector can’t quite reach. You can measure the strength of a community by how it treats its most vulnerable members. By that standard, the many not-for-profits operating in Newmarket are the glue that binds us together – they make us stronger.

Think about it: What would our town look like without organizations like Community Living, CHATS, the Salvation Army, our faith communities, United Way, Inn From the Cold, Easter Seals, or the Newmarket Food Pantry? These are just a few of the groups that make a real difference here.

Without them, seniors and people with intellectual disabilities would face more isolation and fewer chances to be part of the community. More people would be without a safe place to sleep. Hunger would touch more families. Some children would miss out on opportunities to play, learn, and just be kids.

These organizations don’t just provide services – they give people hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging. They remind us that we’re stronger when we look out for each other; we’re stronger together. Fall is a season when many of these groups reach out for support through fundraising or recruiting new volunteers. If you’re able to help, I encourage you to connect with an organization that speaks to you. Any donation of time, energy, or resources – big or small – can make a real difference. Together with our not-for-profits, we can ensure Newmarket remains a place where everyone feels supported and included.

Community Living Central York extends our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the 2025 Jeans & Gems fundraising gala. Your generosity and community spirit made this event truly shine, helping us continue our mission of empowering individuals with diverse abilities to thrive in our shared community Together, we’re making a difference—one gem of kindness at a time.

Denim, Dancing and giving back! The CLCY Jeans & Gems Gala on the evening of September 18th was a celebration of inclusivity, our community, and raising funds for Community Living Central York's new housing initiative; and they very quickly filled a home with love! There was great food, music, dancing, and an overwhelming amount of generosity in the room. Thank you to all who attended! Founded in 1954 Community Living Central York is a non-profit, charitable organization which provides support to people who have diverse abilities. The organization is under the direction of a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of people who receive support, family members and other members of the community. To learn more visit clcy.ca

Safe Streets, Sound Finances,

and a Government That Listens

Recently, I had the opportunity to knock on doors in Newmarket–Aurora. Hearing concerns directly from the community is the best way to represent our riding in Ottawa. One theme stands out above all: safety. Our community is not immune to the troubling rise in violence across the GTA. Families have experienced gunfire on quiet streets, break-ins in peaceful neighbourhoods, and an underlying sense that the place we call home feels less secure.

No parent should fear gunfire blocks away. No one should live in dread of break-ins or violence.

But safety is not the only concern. Families are also struggling with affordability. Parents share their stress about mortgage payments, seniors wonder how to stretch their grocery dollars, and young people question whether they’ll ever afford a home in the community where they grew up. These are not abstract statistics; they are the lived realities of our neighbours.

That is why I was honoured to speak at the recent Budget Lines and Battle Lines event where we examined the fiscal choices made by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Instead of restoring confi dence, his government has delayed the budget and set Canada on course for a $100-billion deficit while 25% of Canadians are facing food insecurity according to Food Banks Canada. A budget is not just numbers on a page; it is a reflection of priorities.

Rising crime, soaring costs, and reckless spending all point to a government that has lost sight of its responsibilities. I will continue fighting for safer streets, sound finances, and—above all—a government that listens.

The Regional Municipality of York, in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), held a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony on September 12th, where 30 candidates took the oath to become Canadian citizens. The ceremony was an opportunity for citizenship candidates to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and celebrate with their friends, family and the local community. This year marked the inaugural Welcoming Week in York Region, recognized from September 12th to 21st, 2025; it was a time to celebrate newcomers and rea rm York Region’s commitment to building welcoming and inclusive communities.

On August 28th, the Aurora Optimist Club proudly celebrated their 40th anniversary with a special alumni dinner at the Aurora Legion, a night filled with memories, laughter, and recognition of the incredible work the club has done over the years. A huge congratulations to Maggie Thornton, who was honored as Optimist of the Year! Her dedication and passion truly embody the spirit of optimism and community service. For four decades, the Aurora Optimist Club has been committed to its mission: providing hope and a positive vision to bring out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves. Here’s to 40 years of making a difference and to many more years of inspiring optimism! To learn more about how you can get involved, visit auroraoptimist.com

NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

"Go Leafs Go! I’ve got my paws crossed for a big season ahead. Time to bring home the pup… I mean CUP."

Ginny

Hi, I’m Ginny, a 1.5 year-old smooth red Dachshund, professional snuggler, and part-time garden explorer. My favourite hobbies include curling up with my human, sneaking in a nap with a pup buddy, and sni ng and digging under every single leaf in the yard (very important work). I may be small, but I’ve got a big personality—equal parts sweet and stubborn. I’ve perfected the famous Dachshund side-eye, which I use whenever things don’t quite go my way. I keep my humans laughing, guessing, and, most importantly, giving me belly rubs.

Hawkeye

Hi, my name is Hawkeye! I’m an 8-year-old Boston Terrier with an old soul. I love my naps and can often be found soaking up the sun—even if it’s just a tiny sliver of sunlight on the floor. My absolute favourite thing in the world is playing fetch outside. I get very excited—some might even say a little crazy—but I promise it’s all in good fun. I can be a bit anxious sometimes, but I love meeting new people (just don’t show up unannounced!). If I get overwhelmed, I’ll comfort myself with a quick snuggle of my blanket. Only for a moment, though—I am the American Gentleman, after all.

Chelsea

Hello, my name is Chelsea and I’m a 5 year old Morkie. My mom takes very good care of me. We moved from our house to a new Condo a year and a half ago... I’m still adjusting! I loved living in our House/Gardens neighbourhood where our neighbours and their kids would take me for long walks in the surrounding woods, year round. I miss it and them very much. Now my mom drops me off at Social Pup daycare once or twice a week and Rob is my groomer when I need it. I’m grateful because they have known me since I was a puppy and they love me . . . . I can tell!

Loki

Hi, I'm Loki - the Dog of Mischief! Everyone asks if I'm a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle. But I'm actually a four year old Brittany Doodle! I love being outside and watching the world go bysomeone has to keep an eye on those squirrels. I have a lot of opinions and like to tell everyone about them. My family says I'm the "talkiest" dog ever. I love going on adventures and playing with my friends at The Social Pup! I can't wait to see what we do next!

Millie

Hey there! I’m Millie. 5 years old, 20lbs of pure muscle and enough crazy to rival the big dogs! A lover of all things squeaky, round and I’ve never met an aluminum bowl I wouldn't dump out and chase all over!! I love spending days with my friends at the Social Pup, and especially love the new space - so Leanne can give me my own bowl chasing place and time! The best naps are always post daycare naps! My family just welcomed my new sister, Betty, who will be joining the Social Pup family with me soon!

not even a year old yet, but I feel like every day is Christmas. I get to run around my backyard with my dog brothers and sister, and scatter millions of toys all around the floor. My human loves that. I'm a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, and I think I am one of the best family dogs out there. I'm not that big, and I'm certainly not brave, so I won't be protecting your house... all I want to do is love and snuggle with my family. I especially love kids and don't mind being picked up and played with constantly. Like I said it's all about love.

For seniors, the best exercises are those that enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while minimizing the risk of injury. A well-rounded fitness routine typically includes aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises.

Aerobic exercises, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, are excellent choices for seniors as they improve heart health and stamina without putting undue strain on the joints. These low-impact activities can be adjusted to suit the individual's fitness level and can be done regularly for 20-30 minutes, several days a week.

Strength training is also crucial for seniors as it helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Simple exercises like bodyweight squats, leg lifts, or using resistance bands and light weights can help build strength. These exercises enhance mobility and independence, making daily tasks easier. It’s important to start with lighter weights and gradually increase the resistance. Balance exercises are essential for fall prevention, a significant concern among older adults. Activities like standing on one leg, tai chi, or yoga can improve stability and coordination. These exercises help seniors maintain better posture and reduce the likelihood of falls.

Flexibility exercises, such as stretching or yoga, are vital for maintaining joint mobility and reducing stiffness. Gentle stretching can improve range of motion and reduce muscle tightness, contributing to overall well-being. Before starting any exercise program, seniors should consult a healthcare provider to ensure the activities are safe and appropriate for their individual health conditions. Regular physical activity can significantly improve the quality of life and maintain independence as one ages.

At Amica Aurora Promenade, our upcoming senior lifestyles residence, we look forward to offering fitness classes every day, hitting on a variety of exercises each week. Learn more when you call Lesley or Ladi at 905-726-2220.

This year’s Saturday Night Fever brought the heat with a true north twist “Maple Leaf Fever” and it was nothing short of spectacular! Downtown Aurora came alive with Canadian pride, incredible food, and nonstop fun. The crowd rocked out to live performances featuring the sounds of Neil Young, Shania Twain, and The Tragically Hip the ultimate Canadian playlist! This celebration was a perfectly Canadian party that had everyone dancing, singing, and showing their love for the great white north.

The 99’s were 100% fire for the grand finale concert in Aurora Town Park! The park was packed, the dance floor was hopping, and the vibes were off the charts. A huge shout-out to the Town of Aurora, the awesome sponsors TD and Magna, and of course all the amazing neighbours who came out every Wednesday to groove, sing, and celebrate community together. Because of this generosity, older adults in our community will be able to stay independent, connected, and cared for — one drive, and one meal, at a time.

It's AWESOME when the Awesome Foundation Newmarket trustees can come together and donate to awesome individuals who are making a difference for youth in Newmarket. We were excited to give $1000 to Martine Schneider (a DSW) and LeeAnn Smalley (Principal) of Rogers Public School to support their Youth Space initiative! This space will help to create a calm and inclusive environment for the children of the school. We love ensuring children are supported as well as the support workers who engage with them!

from

Michael Parsa MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

As we welcome the month of October, I want to take a moment to reflect on the season ahead. The celebration of Thanksgiving during this time of the year brings families and friends together, encourages everyone to pause from their busy schedules, and serves as a reminder to be grateful for the many blessings in our lives.

It’s also a moment to think about the importance of kindness, generosity, and supporting one another. Here in our community, I’ve seen so many examples of people living out these values, whether through volunteering, lending a hand to a neighbour, or supporting local organizations that make a difference every day. These acts of care strengthen the bonds that bring us together.

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce AGM & Members BBQ was sizzling hot - literally and figuratively! Another sold-out event packed with delicious eats, awesome conversations, and all the good vibes. Congratulations to everyone who came out to connect, network, and make it another unforgettable afternoon!

At the same time, not everyone experiences this season with ease. Some of our neighbours may be facing challenges, and a small gesture can go a long way in brightening their day. Whether it’s contributing to a food drive, reaching out to someone who may be alone, or simply sharing a meal, we all have the power to make the season more meaningful for others.

As your representative, I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me and for the opportunity to continue serving such a vibrant and caring community. I wish you and your loved ones a joyful and memorable Thanksgiving.

As part of its $2.1 billion Primary Care Action Plan to connect everyone in Ontario to a publicly funded family doctor or primary care team, the Ontario Government is investing $848,500 this year to connect more people to primary care in Aurora. This investment is part of the government’s Primary Care Action Plan that will help connect 300,000 people across Ontario to primary care this year. The Southlake Academic Family Health Team and the Northern York South Simcoe Ontario Health Team (NYSS OHT) will use this investment to open a new primary care clinic at the end of the month. The clinic is expected to connect up to 2,300 people to primary care to start. Starting September 4th, patients are now able to book future appointments over the phone. Initially, the clinic will be open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, with plans to expand the hours to evenings and weekends in the future.

Since its inception in 2009, it is now the fastest growing POGO satellite clinic in Ontario. Their busy clinic sees approximately 1,300 annual patient visits a year. How long have you lived in the community?

I was born and raised in Newmarket and lived here for 18 years before heading to Ottawa for university. I recently moved back this past spring, and it’s been so nice to reconnect with the familiar sense of community here. It’s the sense of connection and support that keeps me coming back.

What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?

My favourite season is fall. I love the crisp air and the way the colourful leaves make every walk feel extra special. There’s something so cozy about this time of year—whether it’s enjoying a warm drink, visiting a local fall fair, or just settling into a routine after the busyness of summer. It always feels like a fresh start, and I find myself appreciating the little things even more during this season.

What is your favourite sport?

Do you play for any local teams? I don’t currently play for any teams, but Ringette has always been my favourite sport. I still remember being five years old and watching my older sister play, eager for the day I could join too. When I turned six, I finally got to play and I was all in. I went on to play for the Newmarket Rays for a decade, and the game was such an important part of my life.

T is for Terry children’s story book arrived at the Newmarket Library just in time for the 45th annual Terry Fox run. We enjoyed story time on September 12th, learning about courage and the Terry Fox marathon of hope.

Newmarket’s very first Summerfest was an absolute blast! Main Street was buzzing with live music, non-stop entertainment, fun activities, and food. A huge shoutout to the Town of Newmarket, all the amazing Main Street shops, and of course, our wonderful community for coming together to laugh, dance, and make memories right in the heart of town. Here’s to many more summers of fun on Main Street!

The very first Neighbour Media VIP Yellow Party was one to remember! On September 23rd, our long-standing partners joined us for a secret-location celebration at The Giving Place in Mount Albert. Guests hopped on the bus not knowing where the night would take them — only to arrive at the most magical setting for an evening of connection, gratitude, and fun. We shared a beautiful family-style dinner prepared by A Million Mouthfuls, explored the gorgeous property, enjoyed drinks under the sky, and celebrated the incredible community of givers who make Neighbour Media possible. From heartfelt moments to laughter around the table, the night was a reflection of the generosity, kindness, and heart that our partners embody every single day. To everyone who joined us: thank you for celebrating this milestone with us. Here’s to the stories we’ll continue to share, together!

Roll on over to the Newmarket Lawn Bowling Club! On September 20th, the club welcomed the community for a fun-filled open house! Established in 1907, the Newmarket Lawn Bowling Club is all about creating a supportive, friendly environment where you can learn a new game, meet great people, and have a blast. It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and perfect for all ages! You’ll find the club at Lion’s Club Park, right next to the tennis courts and Peter Gorham Pool. Ready to give it a try? Visit newmarketlawnbowling.ca to learn more!

Birthday vibes, sunny side up! There’s no better way to kick off a birthday than with a big, delicious breakfast at Wimpy’s Diner in Newmarket and that’s exactly what Jack did! With over 30 friends and family members gathered around the table, Jack started his special day the best way possible: surrounded by loved ones, stacks of pancakes, crispy bacon, and plenty of coffee. Here’s to a birthday celebration that started with the most important (and most delicious!) meal of the day!

There is a modest cost for our services, please contact us for more details. When you book a ride, we arrange a volunteer driver who will take you to your appointment, wait up to two hours, and take you home afterward. Appointments longer than two hours incur a ‘double fare.’

Rides are provided on a first-come-first-served basis, with medical appointments being prioritized above all others. We require 3 full business days' notice to book a ride and will do our best to fulfil requests with shorter notice.

Not needing our service? Consider joining us! We are always looking for more volunteer drivers to support our transportation program. Our volunteers are provided with mileage reimbursement, formal and informal recognition, training and professional development opportunities, and capacity building. This is a great way to meet new people, give back to the community, gain self-fulfillment, build your resume, and have fun doing it! For more information, please reach out to info@routescc.org.

It was a legendary night at Riverwalk Commons on August 21st! The summer concert series went out with a bang as Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic rocked the stage for the grand finale! A record-breaking crowd filled the park, singing, dancing, and feeling the magic of Queen’s iconic hits. It was an unforgettable night of incredible music and electric energy! A huge thank you to the Town of Newmarket, along with our amazing sponsors TD and Mercedes-Benz Newmarket, for bringing us another summer of music, memories, and community connection. Until next summer, keep rocking on!

Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio: Celebrating 10 Years of Dance, Community & Heart

This year marks a special milestone for Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio — founded in October 2015, we are proud to be celebrating 10 years of bringing ballroom and social dancing to Aurora and beyond. It’s been a decade of rhythm, passion, growth, and connection — and we’re just getting started.

Our Origin & Heart

Artistica was founded in 2015 by nine people —three of which are Anastasia Trutneva, Kelly Stacey and Patrick Derry — all united by a love of ballroom dance, and a belief that dance has the power to build confidence, joy, and community. From the beginning, we chose to remain an independent studio, guided not by corporate mandates but by what we love: excellent teaching, welcoming spaces, and helping people of all levels feel capable on the dance floor.

Charitable Endeavours & Giving Back

Community is at the core of what we do. As part of our 10-year celebration, we’re also proud that many of our charitable partners are marking similar milestones. Some of the causes and events we’ve deeply committed to include:

• Dancing with the Easter Seals Stars — also celebrating 10 years this year. We partner with Easter Seals Aurora/Newmarket in this annual fundraiser, providing professional dance coaching, choreography and performances to help raise funds for children in need.

• Lip Sync for Victim Services of York, supporting essential services in our region.

• Performing for Hands Across the Nation’s Great Gourmet Give; an annual fundraiser to bring safe water supply, hospitals, school and other essential needs to their project in The Gambia, Mali & Bolivia

• Leading the warm-ups for Coldest Night of the Year by Inn from the Cold in Newmarket.

• Annual Holiday Food Drive for the Aurora Food Pantry

These events reflect our belief that dance isn’t just an art — it can be a force for good! Meet the Team

• Anastasia Trutneva , Kelly Stacey, and Patrick Derry are our talented founders, owners, and instructors. Along with Sarah McMillan, another dedicated and talented instructor, they bring together years of experience, creativity, patience, and love for the craft.

• Every instructor at Artistica is committed not just to technique, but to helping students feel at ease, take risks, and grow. Whether you’re stepping onto the floor for the first time, preparing for a big event, or want to deepen your performance skills — we’re here to guide you.
