AUTUMN IS HERE

To celebrate the changing nature of the seasons, Terrace Station is opening its heritage gardens on Sunday, April 2nd and again on May 7th. Unlike in some previous years of drought, Kate Foster of the Terrace Station Charitable Trust is looking forward to the leaves clinging to the trees for much longer. The old oaks and sequoias in the Big Walkway provide vital shade, along with acer maples, linden limes, holm oaks and cedars. The numerous shrubs and flowers are a haven for birds and insects which are sometimes sadly lacking in our modern farming environment.

Roses will still provide some late colour along with late flowering plants such as liriope and sternbergia.

The Hutch will be open displaying historic farming and gardening tools along with 19th century domestic items, some of which are the subject of lively debate as to their original uses. Children will be kept entertained with printed lists of items to discover in the gardens and woods. Visitors are invited to bring their picnics to enjoy on the lawns around the historic

house. There will also be a small plant stall.

The $10 entry fee goes to the Terrace Station Charitable Trust, children enter free. Please note there is no eftpos, it’s cash only. Terrace Station will be signposted from the Hororata roundabout. Please leave dogs at home

THROUGH THE SEASONS - ART EXHIBITION

‘Through the Seasons’, highlights the works and natural world interpreted by Canterbury painters Vicki Knudsen, Donna Coster , Liz Reeves and John White, alongside former Cantabrian potter, Neil Hey. The exhibition opens at Te Huanui Art Gallery on Friday, 31st March and runs until Thursday, 27th April.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Opening!

Vicki Knudsen has returned to the art scene after a few years of very little painting, now simply having more time. Vicki is self

taught and mostly paints in water colour.

Vicki’s motivation is very simple, to celebrate life and invest in healthy relationships. Her subject matter reflects this, with works featuring people she knows and places she has been inspired by.

Donna Coster is an Oxford based artist whose art journey began in 2019. Her new found passion led to a return to study in 2020, enrolling as an adult student in Year 13 art.

Donna’s work often features Lake Brunner, drawn to its many moods and peaceful tranquillity.

Lake Brunner is the place of her earliest childhood memories and represents the strong affiliation and sense of connection she has

with the South Island’s West Coast.

Liz Reeves’ introduction to painting was through folk art. She became interested in painting on canvas, and exploring acrylic and oil, through various workshops.

Liz enjoys nature and colour, particularly the combinations the two bring to the viewer. Liz continues to learn and challenge herself through her artwork.

Neil Hey began his journey with clay in 1990 at the Mt Pleasant Pottery Group, quickly establishing his own home studio and wheel. Neil now resides on the Kapiti Coast in Otaki, but has a strong Canterbury based following.

Neil’s work is gas-fired in

reduction, and he takes delight in producing colourful, vibrant works. His current works feature multiple overlapping glazes, with colours produced representing images of birds, fish and forms from nature.

John White paints in oil and acrylic, enjoying the challenge of new and different techniques. His background in commercial art

gives him a strong base with signwriting and screen printing skills also.

John enjoys painting New Zealand wildlife and scenery and believes his rural Dunedin upbringing nurtured his love of nature and wildlife.

DRAGON BOATING SUCCESS

Last Sunday, two Darfield High School (DHS) Dragon Boating Teams competed in the South Island Secondary School (SISS) Dragon Boating Regatta at Lake Ruger, an irrigation lake in Eyrewell. Following on from last year's success with a ten paddler crew, this year DHS were able to field two teams. They had a twenty paddler girls crew with a mix of last year's team members and some new members, and a ten paddler mixed crew made up of first time Year 10 students. Weekly training started at Lake Rua, in Christchurch, at the beginning of the term leading up to the SISS Champs. The teams showed great resilience coming up against more experienced teams with older students. Each team started with a 1km time race, where schools were set off fifteen seconds apart, having to complete two laps of a 500m circuit. Both our teams managed to pass crews, with our twenty paddler team finishing in third place in the Girls Grade, and our mixed crew narrowly missing out on third place in the 10 Grade. Onto the 500m sprints, with one heat each and times to be used for finals, our twenty paddler team finished fourth, with our ten paddler team finishing first in the B Final.

The 200m sprints were just a straight out slog with two heats and the average time being used for finals. Our twenty paddler team got off to a great start and led all the way until about the last 20m and were overtaken by Rangi Ruru, finishing a well

deserved second place. Our ten paddler team finished first in the B Final, showing great consistency across all races. A huge thank you to our Sweepers who put up with us for the last seven weeks - Evan and Cam - you guys rock! Also,

thanks heaps to Jo Beswick for all your help with the team this term.

Thanks to all the supporters for a fantastic day. We can't wait to do it all again in 2024.

PORK PIE CHARITY RUN

The Pork Pie Charity Run is a biannual fundraising week-long road trip for mini owners starting in Paihia on March 31st. Fifty minis, old and new, will travel down the country finishing in Invercargill on April 5th, raising money for the chosen charity, KidsCan.

Team Mums on the Run for 2023 starts with sisters, Viki McClimont from Darfield and Karlie Cornish from Ashburton in ‘Herman’ the mini. Viki will be joined by local Kylie Chaffey, in Darfield, for the completion of the Run.

The Run is all about raising money for a great charity. KidsCan helps provide Kiwi kids with the basics they need to get into the classroom in a position to learn. KidsCan has been in

operation since 2005, providing food, clothing, shoes, socks and basic health and hygiene items to thousands of children all around New Zealand who are living in material hardship.

They work closely with early childhood centres and primary, secondary and high schools in deciles 1-4. The KidsCan mission is to provide the essentials to Kiwi kids affected by poverty so they can participate in learning and have an opportunity for a better future. Their vision is a better New Zealand for all Kiwi kids.

KidsCan believes that every child in New Zealand deserves an equal chance to learn, and if they arrive in the classroom fed, dry and warm, learning outcomes and participation will increase.

MALVERN A&P SHOW

Last Saturday, another successful Malvern Show was held at Sheffield. Although the weather gave a hint of deteriorating in the morning, this blew over and became a pleasant afternoon. Busy crowds enjoyed the competitions and entertainment on offer, finishing with a social gathering over at the Bar and a hilarious team shearing event. It was an opportunity to catch up and chat when the hard work was behind us.

There were some outstanding individuals outside of our dedicated committee that need acknowledging this year, with grateful thanks from me especially.

I apologise if I've left anyone out, Debs Abraham, Vicki , Rochelle and Howard Barrett , Leanne Winter, Locky

Faulkner , Andy Thompson, Dave Oakley , Rico , Chris Redmond, Kerry Hewson , Stu Gillanders , Tim Sowman, Sheffield Fire Brigade, Helen Taege, Lachie Marshall and friends, Janelle and Theckla Barnhill , Jenny Reid, Jessica Stewart , Ed Harrington , Reece and Mel Cleland, Wayne Rori , Shaun Adams , Shaun Burgess and our youngest band of merry teens that once again stepped up on the day; Campbell, Logan, Devon, Liam, Braydon, Arthur , and all those they roped in. Also, Chris Singh for his final performance. Thank you all!

See next week’s issue for full report and results.

Michelle Webster, Malvern A&P Show President.

“This is a great way to see our awesome country, meet new people, and raise some money for a good charity while having some fun along the way,” commented Viki.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, every little bit helps. Any contribution large or small is greatly appreciated.

“We will be documenting our time driving down New Zealand through our Facebook page: Mums on the Run 23,” Viki concluded.

MALVERN C0-OPERATING PARISH

Recently, I was Blessed to have been driven by Tom Dunbar (married to Amelia nee Guild) on a recent 4WD, eight hour adventure around five local hill stations as a fundraiser for Windwhistle School. The whole journey was such a spiritual connection with the stunning views and listening to the family stories. The celebration of Easter is coming up, so I thought of weaving the Easter Story into this beautiful vista.

The Easter story reaches the hearts of everyone, as we journey through events leading up to Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on a humble donkey, an animal, which carries our burdens, our baggage, our stuff, which symbolises Hope when we hand over our brokenness to Jesus. Jesus’ crucifixion follows, and he dies on the cross. Days later, Jesus is resurrected from death and lives forever when we accept Him into our lives.

As we look at this image, we are reminded of God’s Love mirrored in us, as we reflect the message of Hope to others through our faith in Him.

“For God so Loved the World that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him should not die but have Eternal Life.” (John 3:16).

Have a Blessed Easter!

Aunty Lyn (Ministry Team Leader: Malvern Co-operating Parish).

SELWYN CATHOLIC PARISH

Easter is a special time for everyone here in Selwyn. Regardless of our beliefs, it is good that we can take the time to have a break from work and spend quality time with family and friends. As with Christmas, Easter is made special when there are children around, and they get to enjoy Easter Eggs. Easter Eggs are a symbol of new life, and for Christians we celebrate the gift of New Life in

Jesus having risen from the dead. On Good Friday, we remember that Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross for our sins. This is a sad time, but it turns to Joy on Easter Sunday when we celebrate that Jesus has Risen. All of us know what it is like to experience sadness in our lives, especially when someone close to us dies. It is good to reflect on the life of those who have passed away and to be grateful

for how they have touched our lives. It is also good to look forward and to know that death is not the end, just as Jesus rose to new life, so we pray that our loved ones may enter into Life Everlasting.

I wish you all a Blessed Easter and the Joy of Jesus rising from the dead.

MALVERN ANGLICAN PARISH

Easter is when Christians remember and celebrate that Jesus died and rose again, 2,000 odd years ago. A lot has changed since then, but a lot has not changed. We might wonder what difference it makes that Christians persist in claiming and celebrating Jesus' resurrection. Don't we have enough to think about with the cost of living, war, climate change and the rest? What has the resurrection got to do with any of that

anyway?

The early accounts of Jesus' life, the Gospels, are very clear that Jesus' resurrection from the dead was a bodily resurrection. Yes, it transformed Jesus into something new, but he was still recognisable. Jesus was still human, and he still had a physical body.

We celebrate Easter because we look to God to transform us and our world in a similar way. This is known as ‘the Christian hope’.

It is the hope that God will transform us in all our weakness and brokenness and make us new. This hope extends to the whole world and to all of its places and creatures. It speaks directly to the problems we face because the resurrection of Jesus was just the beginning of the transformation of the whole world.

PREMIER CRICKET REPORT

Last Saturday, LeestonSouthbridge were crowned Canterbury Country 2022/23 Premier Champions following a three wicket win against last season's winners, Darfield. Batting first, Darfield cautiously made it to 42/0, seeing off the opening bowlers on a wicket that assisted the new ball. Once Chris Beatson was introduced to the

attack, the visitor's innings crumbled and never recovered. Beatson accounted for both openers and then he and Tim Gruijters put the breaks on through the middle overs.

Eventually, dismissing Darfield for a disappointing 125 runs in the 37th over.

Darfield's batters were never allowed to settle as wickets

seemed to fall all too regularly, Nick Jenkins top scored with 18 runs, 1 shy of extras at 19 runs. The Lee-Bridge plan was clearly demonstrated, bowl stump to stump and force Darfield into errors. Darfield obliged. A clean sheet for catching and a run-out confirmed why LeestonSouthbridge deserved their final spot.

With four regular Darfield players unavailable due to injury, it was going to take something special from the remaining experienced veterans. Nick Jenkins and Robbie Foulkes produced the goods to have the hosts panicked as 3 wickets fell for just the first 7 runs. 7/3 soon became 25/4, and Darfield could sense a comeback. Enter the calm heads of Tim Gruijters and Sam Chamberlain, who applied all their cricketing wisdom to take the score to 95/5 when

Chamberlain fell. Both batters defended anything straight and simply waited for an unthreatening ball to squeeze a single.

Another wicket fell with the total at 96, but with Gruijters still there, Darfield's chances were slim. He eventually fell for 42 runs with only 6 more to get in the 38th over.

Darfield

125/10 from 37 overs

Nick Jenkins 18 Robbie Foulkes 17 Chris Beatson 5/14 from 7.3 overs.

Leeston-Southbridge

129/7 from 39 overs

Tim Gruijters 42 Sam Chamberlain 35 Robbie Foulkes 3/22 from 9 overs.

Two 90-year-old women, Bertha and Betty, had been best friends all of their lives.

When it was clear that Bertha was dying, Betty visited her every day.

One day Betty said, “Bertha, we both loved playing softball all our lives, and we played all through high school. Please do me one favour: When you get to heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s women’s softball there.”

Bertha looked up at Betty from her deathbed and said, “Betty, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you. Shortly after that, Bertha passed on. A few nights later, Betty was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, “Betty, Betty.”

“Who is it?” asked Betty, sitting up suddenly. “

“Betty, it’s me, Bertha.”

“You’re not Bertha. Bertha just died.”

“I’m telling you, it’s me, Bertha.”

“Bertha! Where are you?”

“In heaven,” replied Bertha. “I have some really good news and a little bad news.”

“Tell me the good news first,” said Betty. “The good news,” Bertha said, “there’s women’s softball in heaven. All of our old buddies who died before me are here, too. Even better than that, we’re all young again. Better still, it’s always springtime and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.

“That’s fantastic,” said Betty. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news?”

Bertha replies, “You’re pitching Tuesday.”
