WEEDONS BLUE DOMINATE COMP

Weedons Blue recently won the Malvern Presidents Tennis Round Robin and Knock Out competitions.

This season there were thirteen teams entered in the Malvern competition, three teams from both West Melton and Courtenay, two teams from Weedons, Sheffield and Darfield and one team from Hororata.

Weedons Blue won all their games in the Round Robin competition, their closest matches were verse Courtenay East and Darfield Nor westers, narrowly winning 5 - 4.

On Saturday, March 18th, Weedons Blue won the Knock Out competition beating West Melton White 6 - 3 in warm, windless conditions, at Weedons.

It was a closely fought match, with three tie breakers, two of them favouring West Melton. Weedons number three players Paul Cockburn and Sharon Richards secured three wins each, and were MVP’s for the Weedons Club, over the season. The team consisted of Julie Cockburn , Ange Wanoa , Sharon Richards, Jye Dey, Ross Hawke and Paul Cockburn. Other team members who had played, watched and encouraged throughout the sixteen week season, were Terina Wanoa , Kay Pringle, Andrew Stratton (injured) John Small and mascot Charlene Richardson , who was injured all season.

Courtenay Robots beat Courtenay East 5 - 4 to secure third and fourth positions. Weedons Green were tenth in the Round Robin and seventh in the Knock Out, with Barrie Coleman being their team MVP. “Thank you to the committee and delegates for supporting, organising and running this competition, especially Reg Pennells for the draw and collating the scores and results every week,” commented Weedons Club Secretary, Julie Cockburn.
