MCC RECEIVES US DEPT. OF LABOR GRANT
Madisonville Community College has been awarded a grant totaling $591,343 from the U.S. Department of Labor in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission, Delta Regional Authority, and Northern Border Regional Commission. This grant is a part of the Workforce Opportunities for Rural Communities initiative, which aims to provide career training and supportive services to help individuals secure good jobs in stable, high-demand occupations. Dr. Cindy Kelley, President of Madisonville Community College, said, “This grant reflects MCC’s dedication to excellence and our region’s economic development. With these funds, we’ll elevate our manufacturing and machining program to align with industry needs. We’re excited about the positive impact this support will have on our students and the local economy.” This grant will be instrumental in renewing the college’s manufacturing and machining program, a critical educational offering given the high demand for machine tool skills among western Kentucky manufacturers.

Out of nearly 1,100 applications, she will be one of the 213 recipients of a $1,000 scholarship. This program, run by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa, aims to support new Phi Theta Kappa members in associate degree programs, based on scholastic achievement, leadership potential, and community service. “The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.” The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion but also give students the opportunity to engage in Society programs and develop leadership skills to become future leaders in their communities.
Alicia shared, “Receiving the 2023 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship is a tremendous blessing and honor. This scholarship is not just a financial boost; it is also a recognition that our past does not dictate our potential. With gratitude in my heart and determination, I will use this scholarship not only to further my education but to amplify my impact on the lives of children and families in need of intervention and services.”
