MCC Happenings - Fall 2023 Edition

TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-THREE FALL EDITION We choose to call our MCC newsletter Happenings. When you get right down to it, happenings might be considered an odd choice of title for such a publication. It’s one of those words that, when you say it several times, begins to sound strange! Happenings is defined as “an event,” “an occurrence,” and even “sometimes spontaneous and theatrical.” As I reflect upon it, the word accurately describes the manner of MCC. Things are always happening! This quarterly newsletter can only share a fraction of the events that happen on our campuses. Even so, it is rewarding to be able to share our opportunities and successes with the folks in our communities who support us in the work we do. We are happy to give you a glimpse into the happenings on our campuses. Great shows and exhibits are always happening at the Glema. We are so fortunate to have this venue as a part of our college and our community. From art exhibits to theatrical productions, coffee house performances, center stage shows, and visiting school children, there is never a quiet week at the Glema. The college’s Special Events Committee makes sure events such as Fall Kick-Off, Chili Cook-off, and Holiday Cheer are enjoyable for all employees. Our Community Service Project Committee works with our entire campus family to support community efforts such as the United Way, food banks, and many other groups and agencies across our communities. Our campus family works hard every day, so we also want to offer happenings that give them a little time to enjoy just “being.” We are fortunate to have our Madisonville College Foundation which treats us from time to time with cookouts and ice cream!

HAPPENINGS

Our faculty are constantly looking for innovative ways to help students find success. Our Health Sciences faculty utilize the simulation hospital and simulation home to give students real-life experiences as they prepare to go into health-related fields. Electrical Technology and Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning faculty have reimagined their programs and are rebuilding a lattice program that will integrate the two degrees. Students will soon be able to complete both degrees and become electricians and HVAC specialists in 5 – 6 semesters rather than the 8 semesters before the change. In fact, in just a couple of weeks we will be hosting an event with the Lowes Foundation to celebrate the Gable Grant project that will be offering financial support to fully develop this innovative program.

There are many events to come as well. Our Glema shows will continue. We will soon be having end-of-semester celebrations such as pinnings and commencement. In the spring we look forward to the 3rd Annual International Cultural Celebration. We are already planning for our new tradition, the Madisonville College Foundation Run for the Roses Gala. I could continue, but I think you can see that it is hard to share everything that happens at MCC in each newsletter. Excitement and momentum are always present to fuel continuous growth and improvement here at MCC. Happenings is definitely a fitting name for this newsletter.

Sometimes at the end of the day, I sit down and take a deep breath. Something is always happening and sometimes I feel tired. Our grant writers keep making things hap- I know something new is coming the next pen as they listen to the ideas and dreams day. More happenings…and I wouldn’t have of our employees and seek funds to make it any other way. them a reality. The simulation hospital and home came to fruition because these Thank you for supporting our happenings! folks found funding sources to support the idea. This also holds true for the latticed Electrical/HVAC program. Very recently we received news that we are recipients of approximately $600,000 to revitalize the Computerized Machining program. There is always something happening in our Grants office! We even have happenings across the ocean these days. Last summer 13 students from MCC visited Italy and Greece as they participated in study abroad activities. In the Summer of 2024, we will have 25 students traveling to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy to experience learning opportunities. These experiences open the world to our students and for many, are an opportuDr. Cynthia S. Kelley, President nity of a lifetime.
