MCC PROJECT HONORED WITH SPIRIT OF KENTUCKY AWARD

At the recent Governor’s Local Issues Conference, Rocky Adkins presented the Peggy Satterly Spirit of Kentucky Award to the Green River Area Development District for their work with the Webster County Fiscal Court and Madisonville Community College for the development of the Lisman Workforce Complex.

“Madisonville Community College is proud to be part of the project that brings new life to the former Dotiki mine site,” said MCC President Dr. Cindy Kelley. “What better way could there be to honor the importance of the coal industry to our region than offering workforce training at the facility? The Lisman Workforce Training Complex is a great example of the area development district, local government, and the college working hand in hand to create opportunities that build and enhance the workforce for the Commonwealth.”

Built in 1971 as part of the Dotiki coal mine, the facility had been inactive since 2019. Now, transformed into the Lisman Workforce Complex, it hosts the college’s utility technician, CDL training, and diesel mechanics programs. Impressively, over 240 students in the line worker program have achieved a 97% placement rate within six months of graduation. Named after Peggy Satterly, a dedicated servant who worked with 11 Kentucky Governors’ administrations over 48 years, the Peggy Satterly Spirit of Kentucky Award recognizes successful projects resulting from cost-effective collaboration among multiple government agencies.

FALL SPIRIT WEEK & ORIENTATION

Madisonville Community College kicked off the school year with events and activities to prepare students for an exciting and successful year. Before the semester began, students were invited to attend the Pathfinder Orientation on MCC’s North Campus on Friday, August 4th, and the Muhlenberg Campus on August 10th. Pathfinder Orientation was designed to assist students with their transition to MCC. It was a wonderful way to discover the resources available at Madisonville Community College. Our job was to support students through the subsequent steps of their college journey. New students were encouraged to attend before classes began. During the first week of classes, we celebrated Welcome Week. Navigation stations were at various places on campus offering campus maps, supplies, snacks, water, and first-day photos. The Student Government Association hosted back-to-school bingo and an MCC scavenger hunt. MCC Spirit Day took place on August 22nd at the North Campus and August 24th at the Muhlenberg Campus. The campuses came alive with the buzz of students, faculty, staff, and community members participating in activities that celebrated the dynamic spirit of the institution. At the heart of the event was the Student Clubs, Organizations, and Academic Support Services Fair. This fair was an amazing opportunity for students to get involved on campus, learn about various academic resources, and join organizations that resonate with their interests and aspirations. Students who visited all booths received a prize and were entered into a drawing for a grand prize. Throughout the day, attendees posed for pictures, showcasing a smile and their MCC spirit.

Patricia Lovett, Dean of Student Affairs, commented, “It’s exciting to see students back at MCC. They bring the energy to campus and it’s nice to see new faces. The first 6 weeks of college are very important in determining a student’s ability to persist and graduate. So, it’s important to have events and activities that help students navigate campus life and help them to become more acclimated to MCC.”
