I’M A RULE FOLLOWER. And even though I have to admit that it’s not one of the characteristics that I like most about myself—after all, there is little room for growth when you don’t think outside the box—it’s within the con nes of “the rules” where I typically feel safest.

But then my son and I experienced an extreme example of how rules can be quite dubious as we traveled along a stretch of highway through the Yucatan Peninsula a few years ago. On this stretch of road, tra c signs are more suggestion than regulation, and making your own rules (or ignoring them altogether) is the law of the land. ere are o cial stop signs that no one stops at; there are almost no one-way signs, though virtually every road in the small towns are one way (You’re made aware of that fact only after you’ve turned the wrong way onto one and angry drivers give you a not-so-friendly, but very unambiguous hand sign alerting you); and my personal favorite, the road signs advising drivers to “Obey the signs!” a directive obviously meant as satire as absolutely no one does.

Given that no one bothers to read the signs, I was quite surprised that the Mexican Department of Transportation put up o cial road signs that divvied out life lessons in addition to its tra c “suggestions.” ere are signs encouraging drivers to think of their loved ones (if not the road rules), such as “Remember your family, they are waiting on you!” and “After an accident, nothing is the same.” ere are also road signs that o er sage rules to live by such as “You can’t take it with you!”

e ambiguity of the Yucatan’s tra c regulations made me a bit nervous. But then the Mexican Department of Transportation was kind enough to remind me with a sign that I was “exactly where I was supposed to be.” And since I always follow the rules on road signs, I tried to worry less and enjoy the unique experience of this road trip as it unfolded. Before long, we were rolling through stop signs like the other cars and even joined in a convoy that passed a really slow-moving truck on the shoulder. We did, however, adhere to the sign warning against placing rocks on the road because why would we want to place rocks on the road?

We are bombarded with rules from every direction: some that we absolutely need to follow and others that allow plenty of freedom for ne tuning to t our own lives. With the help of that Mexican road trip, I’ve come to realize that worrying over the rules too much only serves to keep me inside that box— originality and creativity require at least a modicum of boundary testing.

If you’re a rule follower like me, you probably feel safer inside the box as well. But what do we have to lose? We might not end up exactly where we intended to go, but we will eventually arrive precisely where we need to be.…I know that for a fact because I saw it on a road sign in Mexico. w

Life takes practice! And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue:

TRUST YOURSELF

“Doubt killed more dreams than failure ever did.” This quote resonates with Dr. Molly McCurdy (Waterside Dental Care in Denver), and she shares its significance with our readers on PAGE 12. Starting out as a young female in a largely male profession, see how she learned to trust her knowledge, education, and compassion to steer her in the right direction.

MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

THAT’S WHAT HE SAID

Check out PAGE 44 where Dr. Micah Kirscher, owner of Renew Health and Wellness in Cornelius, talks about his amazing life journey—from growing up in a small town in Wisconsin to ying search and rescue missions for the U.S. Coast Guard. Working as a volunteer rst responder when he was just 17, Dr. Kirscher cultivated his passion for helping others early in life.

Meet Carol Vandergrift on PAGE 38. A real estate broker with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, Carol always knew she wanted to be in real estate. “My job is so much more than selling houses,” she smiles, “it’s placing people in their homes which is the canvas for their life—a place to discover and fulfill their dreams.”

SOLUTION

What started you down the path to dentistry? I grew up playing the piano, and I believe this is where I first discovered that I love working with my hands. I also grew up enjoying pottery classes, and later realized how closely dentistry mirrored pottery. Dentistry is such an art form in many ways, and I quickly discovered it was a profession where I could both help others and appease my creative side— shaping and forming the anatomy of teeth. I knew I wanted to be in a profession that helped people, but I also knew I wanted a career that would provide a proper work/life balance … allowing me to have a family one day.

How do you give back? I volunteer at free dental care events such as the annual Missions of Mercy dental clinics held in North Carolina and Florida. The patients who attend these dental clinics are some of the kindest, most gracious people I have ever met. They are extremely grateful to be relieved of their dental problems, and it makes me feel so fortunate to be able to do that for someone.

With your family so spread out, how do you stay connected? I try to make the most out of my commute to and from work by calling my parents and sisters who all live in different states. It’s a great time to check in with them and catch up on each other’s busy lives. I also like to FaceTime with them while I attempt to cook … partly to chat with them but also because I am far from a great cook and need all the help I can get!

Can you share your self-care routine? How do you relax and unwind? My boyfriend and I love to go on walks and catch up on the day … we also attend workout classes together in the mornings. I love to unwind by watching a Marvel movie with my two cats, Minnie and Tucker, and I still love to play the piano as well. Hiking, traveling, and pickleball also top my list.

Do you have any favorite “words of wisdom” that guide you? “Doubt killed more dreams than failure ever did.” This quote is very special to me because as a young female just starting out in a largely male profession it was easy for me to doubt myself— rather than giving myself the benefit of the doubt that I am so eager to give others. I have slowly learned (and am still learning) to trust my knowledge, education, and compassion to steer my decisions and not let negative or deterring thoughts intrude. w

Like-Minded Folks

Since private schools are mission-driven with their own unique philosophies, families can choose which school aligns most with their values.

Extra Extracurriculars

With smaller school populations, students have more opportunity to engage in sports, participate in theatre, play in a band/orchestra, or have a voice in debate club.

Parental Involvement

Parents and administration have an open channel of communication, with regular parent-teacher contact.

Safe & Secure

8According to a recent study, 72 percent of private school parents strongly agree with the statement that their school is safe.

A Cut Above

Statistics back up the fact that private schools challenge students to meet a higher  academic standard.

More One-on-One

Private schools are typically smaller which allows students and teachers to form closer relationships— enabling them to tailor their teaching styles accordingly.

SCHOOLS

Eager to Help

Many private schools are committed to providing financial aid options to make their school more affordable.

It’s Like Family

According to another survey, 62 percent of private school parents feel their school’s environment is motivating, supportive, and nurturing.

MAKING THE

WHEN YOU START LOOKING FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. A simple online search can leave you feeling inundated with variables, options, and questions. With so much information out there, it is best to have a plan of action. First, develop a shortlist of three to ve schools that you are particularly interested in. Obviously, location is often a determining factor, so review the logistics involved carefully and then consider the following:

GRADE —

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A PRIVATE SCHOOL THAT’S BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY

Each school's academic program is unique. While there are state-mandated minimums in core subjects, there is no state or federal government telling a private school what to teach or how to teach it. And because private schools’ class sizes are smaller, the teachers can take most of the subject matter to the next level … and often a level or two beyond that. Make sure you are aware of the academics and how they are being taught. Raise your hand and ask lots of questions!

A holistic experience—healthy mind, healthy body.

Private schools have made it their mission to educate the whole child … that’s why athletics are compulsory in most private schools. You will nd many have athletic facilities and programs that rival, or even exceed, those of colleges. With a lot of sports variety on campus, check into what your schools of interest are o ering.

Extracurriculars count!

Again, because private schools embrace a full curriculum—mind and body—extracurriculars are an essential item on your checklist. Con rm that the schools in which you are interested o er the activities you seek.

Is this school the best fit?

It’s a question you and your child must both answer with a strong YES. You might be thrilled with the academics, sports, and extracurricular options but if it just doesn’t feel right or “fit” other requirements, then things can derail quickly. Take time to assess the school community and how its members interact. Do you witness warmth, friendliness, and fellowship when you’re on campus? Is there mutual trust? Private schools pride themselves on being like a family, so if you don’t see and feel that kind of camaraderie, that should raise a red flag. w

MOST OF US ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE EXCEPTIONAL TEACHER who inspired us and brought out the best in us during our school days. e reason these teachers made such an impression on us is that they had something other teachers didn’t: it might have been their passion for the subject material; it might have been their passion for watching the “light bulb” come on as students begin to grasp and comprehend the concepts they are teaching; or it may have been their passion for life and their personal interactions with others. Whatever it was, it’s certain that exceptional teachers share a number of core traits and attitudes that make them stand out head and shoulders above the rest. We’ve listed some of them below:

They care. Great teachers are as concerned about forming relationships with their students and connecting with them on a personal level as they are in teaching the subject matter. ey care, they are warm and accessible, and they are enthusiastic not only about what they are teaching but in how the students are receiving the information.

They partner with parents

Great teachers know that parents are just as important in the learning process as they are.  ey communicate frequently with parents through conferences and emails. ey don’t hesitate to pick up the telephone to call a parent if they are concerned about a student.

They are flexible. ey are not rigid in their teaching patterns, but “zig” and “zag” in their methodology so that when one e ort doesn’t seem to be getting the point across they can shift gears and change course. An exceptional teacher assesses their teaching throughout the lessons and nds new ways to present material to make sure that every student understands the key concepts.

They are inspirational. A great teacher not only exudes passion for teaching and learning, thereby inspiring students to love learning as much as they do, they inspire their students to be a better person. ey do this by recognizing the unique potential in each of their students and teaching to those strengths, so that students become more con dent in their abilities and come to realize that they are able, worthy, and unstoppable. w

2

They are optimists. Great teachers believe in their students and their abilities, and they don’t give up on anyone. ey have high standards, they consistently challenge students to do their best, and they are caring professionals who teach students to believe in themselves.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT PRIVATE SCHOOLS

NO MATTER YOUR THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS about public school verses private school verses homeschooling … the fact remains that each has their pros and cons. In order to clarify some misconceptions about private schools, here are ve common myths debunked:

MYTH 1: It’s not affordable.

In the past ten years or so, the emergence of K-12 loans has made private schools substantially more affordable. Approximately a third of all private school students receive some sort of financial aid and with students increasingly transferring from public schools, a wider range of family income level is accommodated. In general, private schools want to make it affordable for families and do so through financial aid grants, loan programs, and merit awards/scholarships.

MYTH 2: Private schools lack diversity.

Private schools actively seek diversity and draw from many geographic areas and backgrounds. Conversely, public schools are often dependent on neighborhood/geographic areas where populations do tend to concentrate more along ethnic or socio-economic factors.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION 20 JANUARY 2023 . lakenormanwoman.com

Any good school promotes discipline and learning but private schools are committed to a curriculum that embraces a full mind/body approach—including a variety of sports, arts, music, theatre, and other extracurricular activities.

Academic standards are often higher, but that’s one of the benefits for students and parents. However, since private schools typically have smaller student body populations, the school is decidedly interested in other things besides grades. Personality/ background, interests, and other outside activities are considered among applicants. A visit to the school is strongly suggested and often a requirement so that applicants, family, and staff can get to know one another—it’s very family focused!

MYTH 5: Private schools are for select groups such as

needs.

While it’s true that some private schools are tailored for special needs, the majority are college preparatory schools that attract motivated students who are excelling academically. These schools offer everything from the AP curriculum (Advanced Placement) to the International Baccalaureate curriculum. w

MYTH 3: They don’t have competitive sports or art enrichment programs.
MYTH 4: It’s difficult to get into private schools.

Nutritional Psychiatry and Brain Health

WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT HELP ADHD

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE TESTING and Nutritional Psychiatry o er an alternative option to traditional Western medicine in treating behavioral health and mental health issues. ADHD, focus, and brain issues are quite responsive to this alternative approach and provide a great example of how it all works. Research shows that ADHD is primarily genetic, “yet genetics only play a part in loading the gun; it’s the environmental in uences that pull the trigger,” states one article.

Environmental in uences include everything from neurotoxins in the environment, to stress, bullying, social isolation, trauma, and relevant to this article in particular, nutritional de ciencies a ecting genetic expression. e term we use for this is epigenetics. In functional medicine and nutritional psychiatry, testing is a cornerstone—as opposed to guessing!

So how do we in uence the epigenetics in a positive way with nutritional psychiatry applied to ADHD? Here are a few di erent areas:

The Right Fat to Optimize the Brain

Other Nutrients That Benefit ADHD Brains

Amino acid therapy is usually necessary to increase neurotransmitters and receptor sensitivity in ADHD. This is specifically increasing dopamine, serotonin, and catecholamines.

Numerous micronutrient cofactors are important, such as zinc and magnesium. Magnesium is one of the key nutrients often recommended. The best recommendation is magnesium glycinate, although most forms of magnesium are helpful—except for magnesium oxide, which is very poorly absorbed.

Vitamin micronutrients important for proper neurotransmitter functions include L-Methylfolate, vitamin B6, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. These are found in highquality meats, beans, seeds, etc.

LKNEXPERT

Dr. Ti any Brown-Bush is diversely trained as an Integrative Mental Health erapist, Traditional Naturopathic Doctor, and Brain Health Practitioner. Her specialty areas are ADHD, Eating Disorders, Nervous System Rewiring, and Post Concussive Recovery. Connect with her at 704.491.2216 or visit www.docbrownbush.com.

Sixty percent of your brain is composed of fat — which means that the brain depends on a steady supply of dietary fat for its health and wellbeing. It really depends on essential fatty acids (EFA), which are the building blocks of fat. Fatty fish and fish oil supply two of the most important essential fatty acids for your brain: EPA and DHA. If levels are low, as they are in brain struggles and ADHD …

Neurons make less serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps control mental activity and mood.

Cellular receptors for the neurotransmitter dopamine become malformed, which results in lower dopamine levels. This is the biggest neurotransmitter discussed in ADHD.

There are fewer synapses, the bridges between neurons.

Probiotics and prebiotics are also extremely important in ADHD, as gut health and foods sensitivities must be screened for and addressed as well.

Hydrochloric acid is important to help improved digestion and absorption of all of the aforementioned nutrients.

Summary Benefits for ADHD Brains

Less inattention, less hyperactivity, less disobedience, less hostility — and better spelling, too. These were among the top symptom-relieving benefits experienced by children with ADHD who took an omega-3 supplement every day for four months, according to research.

Better memory, better learning with nutrient support and aminos.

Improved “working memory” — the short-term recall that is key to learning. w

TAKING CARE OF Business

NEXT IN OUR inspiring “Taking Care of Business” series, we are talking to the fabulous Lori Van Popering! Over the last 14 years, Lori has built a successful Any Lab Test Now franchise with three locations thriving and growing in the Greater Charlotte region.

Lori is a local gal, growing up in Huntersville. She began her career working for her father at his insurance agency (she still holds four licenses), but she made her rst “zig” (see below) when she began noticing that

people seemed to be getting sicker and sicker even as they took more and more medications. Because of some health challenges of her own, combined with a determination to make a di erence in others’ lives, Lori went back to school to study holistic and integrative health. As they say, the rest is history. She opened her rst Any Lab Test Now in 2008 and has been traveling the road to success ever since. Of course, that road is never a straight one, and below, Lori shares how she has managed the twists and turns she has encountered along the way. w

The COVID Monkey Wrench

Nothing can cause a U-turn quicker than a monkey wrench, and COVID certainly threw one at us. We had to adapt to the COVID regulations and mandates, of course, as well as determine how to best serve our patients during a pandemic. The number of COVID tests we completed quickly grew into the thousands, however, would you believe we never missed a day during COVID?! My offices were always open and everyone on my staff remained healthy the entire time!

What Goes Up Must Come Down (& Vice Versa)

Zigging & Zagging

My career would be much less interesting and exciting if it were a straight line from starting up to owning three locations without any hiccups or challenges. Zigging and zagging through those obstacles is the exciting part of being a business owner, especially in the healthcare arena. Never-ending changes in the medical world probably cause me to zig and zag the most—they require constant research and training for myself and my staff. Speaking of my staff, I am fortunate they have not created a lot of twists and turns for me … I’ve had the same core group of employees for the last five years!

Change is the one thing we can count on with certainty, right? All businesses are going to experience ups and downs, and, here’s another newsflash, things don’t always go as planned! The current economic environment has slowed our business down a bit, for sure, however, people still must keep up with their health! We make doing that more affordable and convenient! Anyone can walk right in our offices without a doctor’s note and choose the test they need. Our prices are a fraction of the cost of what you would receive at other places. We allow people to take control of their own health situation with clinical lab testing, vitamin injections, health coaching, or a doctor visit. This is a big plus today! No waiting, no doctor's note required, and no appointment necessary! w

“IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD. ” I don’t know about you, but whenever someone has responded to my concerns with that quip, it hasn’t made me feel better because, trust me, with all the commotion going on up there, inside my own head isn’t exactly a place I like to be. But what I’m coming to realize, and what Stacy Sweeney, founder of BrainWise Solutions and co-owner of VYVE Wellness of Lake Norman (coming soon), understands very well is that the ubiquitous “it’s all in your head” is not only true, it’s great news!

After all, the most powerful computer known is the human brain; it possesses about 100 billion neurons with roughly one quadrillion (that’s a thousand trillion or one million billion!) connections known as synapses wiring these cells together. It can generate 23 watts of electrical power … enough to fuel a small lightbulb. It is, not-so-simply put, the most complicated object in the known universe.

at’s why phrases such as “Don’t let your mind go there”; “When thoughts become things”; “What you feed your brain determines your appetite”; and, of course, “It’s all in your head” have withstood the ages … it’s the power of the brain, or in other words, the power of YOU, that plays a major factor in our health, strength, capabilities, and successes.

As health coaches, Stacy and husband Mike (BrainWise’s CEO) have made the mind/body connection their life’s work and passion. “Many Scripture verses talk about being thankful or rejoicing in gratitude,” Stacy says. “Scienti c research has now found that thankfulness increases blood ow to the brain and decreases chronic illness. I love when science backs up our foundational belief system.”

Stacy and her team partner with their clients and their clients’ practitioners to break down big

lifestyle changes into accessible steps. ey use motivational strategies, behavior change theory, and communication techniques to help clients create sustainable changes that lead to better overall health. “In addition to health coaching,” she continues, “we utilize mild hyperbaric oxygen, exercise with oxygen training, and neurofeedback. is year we are partnering with VYVE Wellness of Charlotte to bring us VYVE Wellness of Lake Norman which will have physician directed IV therapy, whole body cryotherapy, whole body compression, red light bed, infrared sauna, and cold plunge as well as an entire neurocognitive suite.”

With a lifelong love of healthcare—especially helping people with neurological issues—Stacy attended the University of Wyoming for her undergraduate degree and the Paci c University in Forest Grove, Oregon, for physical therapy school. She later obtained her master’s in exercise and wellness from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

“I received my functional medicine health coaching certi cation through the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy,” Stacy says, “and subsequently my national board certi cation in health coaching. My personal journey with functional medicine started when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and found that changing my diet, decreasing stress, and focusing on sleep made a huge impact on my health. My journey into brain health came as we were trying to nd the very best resources to heal some family members who had experienced trauma, both physically and mentally.”

“We’ve walked the path our clients are on so many times,” Stacy empathizes. “We’ve had family members with attention span issues, signi cant trauma, mysterious neurological symptoms, cardiac problems, and addictions. By walking those roads ourselves, we have encountered holistic approaches that address brain, body, and behaviors and reroute them towards health and healing. We know how it

lakenormanwoman.com . JANUARY 2023 29

feels to be diagnosed but left feeling completely stuck— having no concrete plan or accountability partner to help implement the doctor’s plan. I absolutely love the day-to-day interactions with our clients … acting as the

threatening illness and living in an orphanage setting, they were lled with great joy and gratitude. It changed my life!”

Stacy and Mike met in the fth grade in their small hometown of Sheridan, Wyoming, and have been married for over 28 years now. ey have eight children and three grandchildren. While many things stand out in Stacy’s life, two things have changed her world most dramatically. e rst was nding out that their infant triplet son had a congenital heart defect and required surgery. Just 10 days old and weighing only three pounds, it was a delicate and di cult time.

“ at experience strengthened my faith in God and our marriage,” she shares, “as we navigated the roller coaster of emotions that came with the possibility of losing our son. e second life-altering moment was much more joyous as it was the adoption of our youngest daughter. I learned very quickly that I didn’t have to birth a child to fall completely in love with her.”

Having lived in 14 states and traveled to Mexico, Canada, Guatemala, China, Uganda, and Ethiopia, Stacy is no stranger to globetrotting. All their overseas trips have been especially impactful since many of them have included adoptions and mission trips. “One of my most memorable trips was to Uganda,” Stacy recalls. “At the time, our 16-year-old daughter was doing an internship in a program for children with HIV. By walking those roads ourselves, we have encountered holistic approaches that address brain, body, and behaviors and reroute them towards health and healing.

This Year’s Going To Be Different!

WE SAY IT EVERY YEAR and we mean it every year, but … something inevitably derails us. Our good intentions to eat less, exercise more, cut down on work, make family a priority … learn a new skill, kick an old habit … and the list goes on and on. Sometimes it even involves NOT making any resolutions—who needs the stress and letdown of unmet self-improvement goals, right? Well, fear not! You certainly don’t stand alone in the battle of the resolutions; but, by keeping the following in mind, you might be surprised at your success rate this year:

TIPS FOR ACHIEVING (AND MAINTAINING!) YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
“ DON’T REACH FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE— SET SMALL, ACHIEVABLE GOALS AND REWARD YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY." Start Small.

Baby steps count and most resolutions fail because we set too high a standard or goal for ourselves. Too many people use New Year’s resolutions as a catchall for grand additions to their already overly stacked To-Do lists. Don’t reach for the impossible—set small, achievable goals and reward yourself accordingly.

Make Your Goals Specific.

Many times, people don’t keep their self-imposed promises because they are too general in nature. For example, instead of saying, “I am going to lose weight this year,” get speci c on how many pounds, realistically, you can lose in a month and then set up other activities that will support your goal— such as healthy meal preps, implementing a daily caloric intake chart, and using a pedometer to track your steps.

Pat Yourself on the Back.

Place visual reminders of your successes all around you— write down pounds lost or steps walked and post it on your mirror; as you get out of debt, stick your bills marked PAID on your fridge; or hang a photo of that dream car or bucketlist vacation you’ve been working so hard towards… you get the picture. Visuals are not only a great motivator, but they make us feel proud of our accomplishments and that is a big key to successful New Year’s resolutions.

Time Is On Your Side … But Start NOW!

Don’t get overzealous and expect great things in a week or two. Give yourself time to see some progress. Most New Year’s resolutions aren’t kept because we tend to want immediate results. Also, get started right away—no procrastinating! e whole point is New Year, New Start, New You … so let’s get going! w

Have You Had Your Annual Checkup Yet? Your Mortgage

Checkup That Is!

WELL, IT’S EXACTLY TIME TO DO JUST THAT. From year to year, we experience life changes such as a job loss or promotion, marriage, birth of a child, divorce, empty nesting, or retirement – just to name a few. ese life changes can mean that your mortgage may not be suited to the new situation. An experienced mortgage originator can help you navigate through the process and evaluate the best steps for you to take to achieve your goals.

It may mean shortening the term of your mortgage to pay it o early; or, it may mean using some of the equity for college tuition or a home repair/improvement project. It may even mean staying the course you are on. I recommend using your mortgage as a tool to manage one of your biggest assets—making sure you are on track to meet your nancial goals. Here are some things to consider:

When reviewing your mortgage, it is also an appropriate time to review your homeowner’s insurance coverage and premiums to be sure that the coverage meets the new value of your home –as many homes have much more value than they did a couple years ago.

Shelly Quinn is the branch manager and construction loan specialist at Silverton Mortgage located at 9525 Birkdale Crossing Drive, Suite 203, in Huntersville. You may reach Shelly at 704.609.1339 or shelly. quinn@silvertonmortgage.com.

The new loan limit for 2023 has increased up to $726,200 from $647,200 for a single unit in the standard area and over $1 million for a high-cost area. A conforming loan amount is one that is backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so these loans allow for smaller down payments and less restrictive guidelines than a non–conforming loan that is often referred to as a jumbo loan.

While rates are higher, some of the competition on finding a home has settled a bit so you may be able to negotiate on a home more easily and not be forced to pay large sums of money over the asking price just to get an offer accepted. So even though the rate is higher, the monthly payment may work out about the same as if you were having to offer $50,000 over list price. Get prequalified so that you are comfortable with the numbers, and you will know what price range to search in.

Each year there are changes in the mortgage industry as well—changes such as new programs to assist borrowers, new guidelines that help borrowers qualify for more, and new loan limits for conforming loans, so do your homework and consult a professional.

Buying a home or re nancing a mortgage is a huge commitment, so be sure to work with a professional who can assist you with all the decisions and options. Increasing rates are not just on mortgages – it is on everything you use credit for, so cleaning up and consolidating debt will help you in all nancial arenas. Again, a mortgage originator will determine the most cost-e ective way to reach your goals and save you money! w

OPPOSITES attract

THE “MEET CUTE” idea for couples that are the exact opposites can be applied to design as well. Contrast is a very important tenet of the design process and leads to the most sophisticated of spaces.

If everything in a room is shiny, where do you look? If all elements are white, where do you look? Contrast in color, scale, proportion, and texture can determine where the eye lands rst. e visible di erence helps focus the eye and de nes the hierarchy of a space. Contrast is also one of the key elements in adding drama to a space. Consider the following:

COLOR

• Painting all the walls a dark color and then adding light, bright furnishings will help light up the room.

• Painting a high ceiling a dark color will bring the ceiling lower in the mind’s eye.

• Having one element that is vastly different in color than the others in the room will immediately focus the eye on that element.

• When painting connecting rooms, use a lighter color for the first one and a darker for the other so your eye is drawn toward the vista ahead.

PATTERN

• If every pattern in a room is the same size and they are all florals, you have a mess. However, if one pattern is a large floral, one is a solid, and one is a small/ medium geometric, the difference in these helps bring importance and focus to the grouping.

FURNITURE

• Variety adds interest, so mix wood frames with pure upholstery and skirted pieces with leggy pieces.

• A room needs a bit of history thrown in the mix, and a patina in a piece, an accessory, or a painting adds the perfect juxtaposition of character.

WHITE SPACE

TEXTURE

• A room full of velvets with a polished tile fireplace will add not only drama, but it will make you focus on the fireplace. This is why women wear sparkling gemcovered necklaces and earrings. The jewelry brings focus to the face.

• Designers tend not to crowd every space with interesting elements. Now, I will point out that some are showing chaotic mixes in editorials that are quite interesting, but the question is would you want to live in them? Just like in fashion magazines, editorials are not always what we want for ourselves. Most designers allow for white space or uncluttered moments in a room for the eye to rest. If you flip through this magazine, you will see that the designer has arranged the layouts to allow you to not be overwhelmed with images and writing. She lets your eye rest here and there.

I encourage you to consider contrast in your design. Just as a spend thrift needs to marry a saver, the light needs dark to make it stand out. How is this year going to contrast with last year? w

VANDERGRIFT

on REAL LOVE FOR REAL ESTATE: I always knew I wanted to be a real estate agent. Even as a child, I was fascinated with home construction, floor plans, and design. When my first marriage ended, I immediately pursued a career in real estate. My job is so much more than selling houses; it’s placing people in homes that become the canvas for their life—a place to discover and fulfill their dreams. It is within the home that they will make incredible lifelong memories growing a family, throwing ball in the backyard, outings on the lake, time around a fire pit or pool, and so much more. I love being a small part of that plan and I feel incredibly blessed to do something I enjoy each and every day.

on EMBRACING MAMAHOOD: Being a mother has been very fulfilling, yet it is also one of the most difficult jobs you can have. None of us are given a book that tells us how to be perfect parents, so we just have to do the best we can. I am so proud of my children … each of them is an incredible adult who is beautiful inside and out. Family is extremely important to me. When I say family, it is not just family by blood or marriage, but the people you choose to spend your life with. I hope that if I am remembered for anything, it is that I loved unconditionally and that I tried to make a difference in the lives of those around me..

on LEANING ON LOVED ONES: For a real estate agent, balancing work and family life is very difficult. We get calls every day, even when we are on vacation. Thankfully, my husband understands, and it helps that my children are grown. We do our best to carve out time to unwind—taking small trips together even if it is just a day hike.

on MAKING TIME TO PLUG IN AND BLISS OUT: One of my favorite ways to unwind is reading and listening to audiobooks. I love to travel, and I have a bucket list of places that I want to go. My most memorable trip to date was to Mexico last November. My new husband and I went on a cruise to celebrate our honeymoon. It was amazing and so beautiful.

on TAKING AIM, TAKING CHANCES: Folks might be surprised to know that one of my first dates with my husband was at a shooting range. I believe I beat him that day, but now he is better than I am. He asked me to marry him at the same shooting range by using a custom target he made. It said, “Will you marry me?” I had to shoot the “yes” or “no” and he conveniently made the YES target bigger which was very cute! w

FAMILY, FLYING, AND FUR BABIES

spoiler alert:

MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been 28 years since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of

A LIFELONG PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS

I got started in the medical eld when I was just 17 years old and worked as a volunteer rst responder in rural Wisconsin. is is where I cultivated my passion for helping people. Four years ago, I opened Renew Health and Wellness in Cornelius where I am also the Nurse Practitioner. We are so proud to be a leading and progressive healthcare solution for patients who have been failed by traditional medicine. As a true private practice (which is unheard of these days!), we are able to keep the practice patient oriented. Renew’s services include medical weight loss, women’s and men’s health, IV hydration, and anti-aging longevity medicine. We provide proactive, not reactive, healthcare and our model of training blends the best of traditional medicine, preventive medicine, and wellness.

STRIKING THE BALANCE

LOVING LIFE WITH MY LOVE

Coral has been the most in uential person in my life, and she has de nitely inspired me the most. She is thoughtful, logical, and always sees di erent ways to solve problems. We love to spend time on the lake in the summer with our friends and family, and we also work out together—regularly attending CrossFit classes. It’s a great challenge for us, and we love the community that it provides.

I grew up in the Midwest and went to high school in the small town of West Salem, Wisconsin. After graduating, I spent four years in the U.S. Coast Guard ying search and rescue missions with a ight crew on a HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. I received my doctorate degree from Frontier University in Lexington, Kentucky, graduating with my family nurse practitioner degree (Doctor of Nursing Practice). is is also where I met my wife, Coral, as we attended our doctorate program together. We have been married for four years and are expecting our rst child, a girl, in March. We also have two fur babies—a Great Dane named Eloi who frequents the clinic on Wednesdays and Fridays, and Cody, a German Shepard.

I’ve found that time management and life/work balance are 100 percent necessary for success. When I rst opened the clinic, it was very di cult to nd that balance. Some days, it’s still hard but if you own your own business or are your own boss, there are no “o ” days. Life can be rushed and worrisome at times, but perspective is key. I often turn to the scripture 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” w

WORDS matter

Words are magic. They actually change our brain chemistry! As wordsmiths here at LKNW, we are especially fond of words that will resonate with our readers, in hopes they will help guide & inspire you.

Come gather in love. Arms that shelter from the seas. Songs that fill your sail and lead you to waters calm. Come gather. Come love. Come sing. Then return to the sea with full hearts and sails.

Please know we notice, I hope you know that’s true, day in and day out, even the little things you do. We see your sleepless nights, the long days in which you engage, but you never seem to mind, you just turn the next page.

Please know we notice your patience, grace, and style,

We notice you spend your own money, going the extra mile.

So thank you, teachers, teachers everywhere … please know we notice and really do care!

AFTER I HAD MY FIRST CHILD, in the midst of juggling life and sleep, I saw an astrology class advertised in Davidson and thought it could be some lighthearted “me time.” I was surprised when I arrived at the class and saw a projector displaying what looked like hieroglyphics. I thought I was there to talk about being a Libra! e teacher asked for my time, date, and location of birth. He used this to plot the coordinates of the planets and make my birth chart.

I learned that I was not just a Libra. is made sense to me as not every twelve people can be the same. We all have a unique chart. He then told me about my life, my personality, and my skills. Being a lawyer at the time, I quizzed him on how he could do this. He explained that he learned astrology mostly by reading books. Curious, I replied, “which books?” From that day on I was hooked and studied every day.

Astrology is an ancient language that astrologers use to interpret energy around us. Each birth chart is unique because the planets are constantly moving. I like to call a birth chart the ngerprint of the soul. e rst thing I do in a reading is breakdown the chart with the client:

TRANSITS EXPLAINED

Where the planets are now in relation to where they were when you were born, transits are a fantastic tool for interpreting what energy is coming up and how to work with it. After all, astrology is energy and we can choose to take the higher form or the lower form. The great thing about knowing what energy is coming up is we can see how to work with it—before, during, and after its presence.

MAKING IT ACCESSIBLE

Traditionally astrology has been used by those who had the means, but I want to help everyone have access to it. As J.P. Morgan once said, “It’s not millionaires that use astrology, it is billionaires.” An astrology reading is a great way to see what energy is in store for the year ahead. So, with 2023 being here, what does the energy look like?

2023

One of the biggest events in 2023 is Pluto moving into Aquarius in March. This is ending a major chapter and starting a new phase. This new beginning has been the focus of astrologers for many years now. It is a fresh exciting time. The last time Pluto moved into Aquarius was in December 1778. Look back to the themes then to see how the energy is repeating. It’s leaving behind the importance attached to traditional ideas; it’s bringing a more community-based, progressive, forward-thinking outlook. This is the major theme for 2023—individually we will feel this differently depending on where Pluto is transiting your chart. Embrace these changes to help build the next new chapter of your life. w

Having studied astrology for years and attending e London University of Astrology, Emmaleen Muldoon now works with clients here in Lake Norman and all over the world to analyze their birth chart. She also teaches workshops here in the Lake Norman area and o ers free astrological updates on YouTube and Instagram at Emmaleen’s Astrology. For more see www.emmaleensastrology.com.
