FOR ME, SUMMER FUN DOESN’T come with an itinerary—it’s in sun-drenched, barefoot days where time doesn’t matter, and nights stretch long past sunset with fireflies blinking and kids begging for five more minutes before bedtime.
Some of my favorite summer memories are with my Memaw, a true Southern matriarch whose birthday fell on July 4th. As a kid, I thought the parades and fireworks were for her—and honestly, so did she. With over 40 cousins (yes, you read that right—forty), we held our own backyard parade in her honor: kazoos blaring, red-white-and-blue everything, and hairbows big enough for their own zip codes.
INGREDIENTS:
1 package vanilla pudding mix
2 cups cold milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 quart heavy whipping cream
1 box vanilla wafers
2-3 ripe bananas (optional but delicious)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1 Chill your mixing bowl and beaters in the freezer for 30 minutes, then whip the cream to soft peaks.
2 In a separate bowl, whisk pudding mix into cold milk.
Afterward, we’d cannonball into the pool, watermelon in hand, temporary tattoos fading, and always— always—banana pudding on the table. Our grandfather Bebop’s famous version didn’t even have bananas, but it was pure perfection. Today, we say: go Bebop-style or go full banana—either way, you win.
3 Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and a splash of vanilla.
4 Fold in the whipped cream.
5 In a large bowl or trifle dish, layer wafers, pudding, and bananas. Repeat and top with whipped cream. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
So whatever your summer looks like—vacations or porch nights—I hope you pause, breathe, and soak it all in. Maybe even grab a kazoo ... and don’t forget the pudding. w

Superstitions, Traditions, & Tall Tales That Still Float
Old mariners believed tossing a coin in before a voyage appeased water spirits. Some locals still do this with first boat rides of the season.
Even today, some captains believe renaming a boat without a formal “denaming” and “renaming” is bad luck.
According to lore, it will summon winds or storms.
Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.
Red sky in morning, sailor take warning
There’s some meteorological logic behind this for short-term weather predicting:

DIY SPA DAY
DIY FACE MASK: mix honey, yogurt, and a touch of turmeric.
Cucumber slices over your eyes reduce puffiness.
DIY BEACHY BODY SCRUB: combine sea salt with coconut oil and a few drops of essential oil ... use gentle, circular motions to apply the scrub during a warm bath.
The setting sun in the west casts light through dry, dusty air. This typically means a high-pressure system (clear weather) is approaching from the west, making for a calm evening and a nice day ahead.
If the rising sun in the east is glowing red, it’s likely shining through dust particles in the air after a high-pressure system has already passed. That usually means a lowpressure system (rain or storms) could be on the way.
Add a cup of milk or milk powder and a few tablespoons of honey to warm bathwater for silky skin. For a muscle-relaxing soak, use Epsom salt with a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil. Scatter rose petals or add chamomile tea bags for a luxurious touch.
INVASIVE LAKE NORMAN SPECIES
An invasive aquatic plant that chokes waterways and damages fish habitats. Often spread by boats or trailers.
Crazy Ants: Believe it or not, certain ants are known to swarm electrical devices like routers, outlets, and even air conditioners, shorting them out in the process.
Flathead Catfish:
Native to some rivers in the Southeast, they’re non-native to many area lakes and can devastate fish populations.
Zebra Mussels:
Not confirmed in Lake Norman (yet) but threatening nearby areas. These fingernailsized mollusks cling to boats and underwater structures, disrupt ecosystems, and cost millions in damage.

Why are chiropractors even paying attention to feet and arch support? First, we are educated and trained to address nearly all of the joints in the body, not just the spine. When poor arch support leads to feet and ankles becoming misaligned, we can help restore normal alignment and function. Even more importantly, when the arches collapse, the knees and hips buckle, which can lead to a tilted pelvis. e pelvis is the foundation of the whole spine, so a tilted pelvis is a common cause of spinal problems. Everything is connected, and a collapsed arch can literally cause issues all the way to the top of the body, one joint at a time. If we are working to x someone’s low back problem, we cannot make a long-term change if the alignment keeps being compromised by improper foot structure and support.
IN THE OFFICES OF CHIROPRACTORS, there are some conditions that we see more often as the seasons change. After a snowfall, there are lots of “thrown out” backs from shoveling and bruised tailbones from slipping on ice. In the spring, there are shoulder issues from the hedge trimmers. In the summer, we see whiplash symptoms from tubing on the lake, and we also see many issues with FEET!
Starting in May, people switch to wearing their sandals and ip- ops. By late June to early July, we see a tremendous in ux of patients complaining of plantar fasciitis, ankle pain, and even knee and hip pain. is is because most sandals and ip- ops have no arch support—whereas most “winter shoes” like sneakers and boots have at least a mild arch in the insole. Additionally, people who wear specialized insoles and orthotics in their closedtoe shoes can’t wear them in their open-toed shoes, so they are without them for the warm weather months.
In our o ce, we partner with a company that makes custom orthotic insoles that support all three arches of the foot. Patients only have to step on a scanner to have a laser map of their feet made, and we can order insoles that support their feet precisely where they need help. ey work beautifully, but that still doesn’t solve the issue of only being able to wear them in closed-toe shoes.
Everything is connected, and a collapsed arch can literally cause issues all the way to the top of the body, one joint at a time.
e good news is that they also o er a whole line of sandals and ip- ops that have the custom arch support built right into the sole. I personally have a pair of sandals and two di erent styles of ip- ops that perfectly support my feet all summer long. Since adding the scanning technology to our o ce, patients are thrilled with their custom summer footwear!
We live in the South. It’s hot. We are going to wear ops. We are excited about that because this summer fewer of our patients will su er because of them. So grab your umbrella drink, custom ops, and head to the pool! w

SHE’S THE KIND OF WOMAN WHO SHOWS UP before you know you need her—arms full of love, quiet wisdom, and a profound passion for caregiving that is deeply rooted in her soul. It isn’t just about what she does. It’s who she is. It’s personal. It’s powerful.
While Michelle Schmerge (President of Equity Health) holds three degrees from some of the most prestigious universities in the country, she’s quick to tell you that her truest education came from the people she’s loved the most, especially her grandparents.
“When I was a little girl,” Michelle shares, “I always knew I wanted to care for older people. My paternal grandmother was an insulin dependent diabetic, and I remember being so intrigued every time she administered her own shots.”
But it was the decline of her maternal grandfather, whom she calls her favorite person in the world, that made the greatest impact. “He passed away my freshman year of college,” she says with a smile of gratitude, “but I was so blessed to have him
in my life, and as a result I met so many wonderful people who cared for him— further inspiring me and con rming my career decision.”
A PATIENT, OR CHEERING ON HER CHILDREN, SHE BRINGS HER WHOLE HEART AND LEAVES HEALING IN HER WAKE.
at early passion set Michelle on a remarkable educational and career course, earning a degree in mathematics and a master’s in nursing from Vanderbilt University; she later earned her doctoral degree from Yale University with concentrations in executive leadership and health policy. It was during the nal stages of her nurse practitioner training that she discovered her true calling in geriatrics.
“I was matched with a visionary physician in Charlotte,” she recalls. “He was incredible,
loved his job, and approached every day with enthusiasm and excitement. I wanted to follow him and lead that kind of life.”
Michelle doesn’t just credit professional mentors for her growth ... her biggest inspirations are at home. “My parents are the hardest working people I know; and my husband is unbelievable! He is constantly cheering me on—all while keeping our life in order. He brings the light to our household and is an amazing father to our children, Kellen (15) and Anna (14).”
Equity Health was founded to improve the care delivered to seniors, Michelle explains, with their core belief being that if you provide the right environment, it will foster an outstanding patient and caregiver experience: “We get the privilege of sitting with people during some of their darkest hours. When you leave them with peace or in a better place, it is such a wonderful feeling.”
Michelle’s favorite mantra—You Get What You Give—is more than a quote. It’s how she lives her life. Whether working alongside colleagues, comforting a patient, or cheering on her children, she brings her whole heart and leaves healing in her wake. w

A HEALTHY WHITE SMILE IS ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE FEATURES IN our society today. It can boost confidence and motivate healthy maintenance habits for good overall health. Over time, we often notice yellowing of our teeth due to age and eating and drinking habits. Patients often ask about teeth-whitening options to revitalize and brighten their smile, and there are several aspects to consider:
If done correctly, teeth-whitening is safe and e ective for anyone who has all of their adult teeth in healthy condition. It does not cause damage to tooth enamel and there are very few long-term risks. It is important to note that teeth with crowns and llings will not respond well to whitening treatments, nor will those with cavities or poor surrounding gum health. Most dentists recommend whitening no earlier than the age of 14, as many teeth are still erupting during this time and are prone to higher sensitivity. Pregnant and nursing women should also avoid whitening, as the potential impact of swallowed whitening agents on a fetus or baby is unknown.
e most e ective whitening products contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which penetrates tooth enamel and reaches discolored molecules within the dentin layer of the tooth. ese internal stains are dissolved, producing whiter teeth. ere may be some temporary sensitivity during the whitening process, but no damage or harm is caused to the tooth structure itself, when used as directed. It is important to avoid prolonged contact of peroxide products with gum tissue, however, as this can result in unnecessary soreness and in ammation which can last a few days.
Teeth bleaching continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments. Bleaching works by using peroxide-based agents to break down stains and discoloration on the enamel and dentin, e ectively lightening the shade of your teeth. While over-the-counter products like whitening strips, gels, and trays are widely available and convenient, professional treatments performed by a dentist o er faster and more dramatic results. w
In-office procedures typically use a higher concentration of bleaching agents and may include light or laser activation to accelerate the process. However, not all discoloration can be erased with bleach—intrinsic stains caused by medication or trauma may require veneers or bonding. Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect but is usually temporary. To maintain your results, it’s important to avoid staining foods and beverages like coffee, red wine, and dark berries, especially in the first 48 hours after treatment. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups also help extend the benefits of bleaching. In general, teeth bleaching offers a safe, effective, and relatively quick path to a brighter smile.
There’s a rhythm to the water—an ancient song whispered by the wind and echoed in the sails. It speaks of resilience, of journeys both charted and unforeseen, of strength revealed not in calmness but in the way we weather the storm. True mastery isn’t in avoiding the waves, but in knowing how to ride them—steady, sure, and full of grace.
Tucked along the sun-dappled shores of Lake Norman, Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club in Cornelius is a place where hospitality meets heart, and every lakeside moment is carefully curated by a talented trio of women who keep things running smoothly. And when they encounter the storms of life, they are able to courageously sail on toward smoother waters.
general manager KATHEE DISHNER
AT THE HELM ARE General Manager
Kathee Dishner, Assistant General Manager Nikole Maust, and Commodore Pamela Black. Together they bring a wealth of experience, warmth, and leadership that shapes the club’s atmosphere—from first impressions to unforgettable events. While their roles differ, their mission is unified: to create a welcoming, well-run haven where members feel valued and every detail reflects a sense of care and community.
As general manager, Kathee is both captain and crew—steering strategically while staying grounded in the day-to-day rhythm of the club. With decades of experience, she began her career in catering on the beach in Monterey, California. “In 1986,” she explains, “I moved to Pinehurst and joined Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club where I was grateful to be trained under Peggy Kirk Bell, one of the ve most in uential women in golf. I’ve worked in the golf management industry most of my career.”
Married to her college sweetheart, Kathee is the proud mother of two daughters—Brandee (married to Dustin) and Brittney (married to Luis)—and doting grandmother to ve energetic grandkids: Keegan, Karis, Connor, Silas, and Evan.
Kathee’s presence is calm and con dent, the kind of leadership that steadies a team and puts members instantly at ease. Whether she’s welcoming a new family, solving a behind-thescenes issue, or pausing to admire a sunset, she leads with quiet strength and genuine care.
“ ere’s something magical about a marina,” she re ects. “It’s not just the boats—it’s the people. I love building relationships and creating a culture where everyone feels like they belong.”
Similar, but bringing her own set of skills to the club, Nikole has a deep and professional understanding of the business side of things. In fact, you could say it’s in her DNA. “Growing up,” she recalls, “my family owned a dance studio, so being immersed in the world of business came naturally to me.”
SAFE HARBOR PENINSULA YACHT CLUB FEELS LIKE A SECOND HOME. AND THAT SENSE OF BELONGING IS NO ACCIDENT. IT’S THE RESULT OF THOUGHTFUL, PRESENT, AND DEEPLY CAPABLE LEADERSHIP.
While studying at James Madison University, she discovered a passion for hospitality that only deepened when she began working full-time at CrossKeys Vineyards during her nal semester. Starting as a hostess and eventually moving into event and catering management, Nikole found her calling. “I loved working closely with clients to bring their special occasions to life,” she says. “It was so ful lling to make a meaningful impact on their lives.”
Originally from Warrenton, Virginia, Nikole took a leap of faith in March 2020 and relocated to Charlotte with her husband, Tyler—just as the world was shutting down. “I feared my career in hospitality might be coming to an end,” she admits. But fate had other plans. She applied for what she thought was an operations role at Peninsula Yacht Club, only to discover it was in facilities maintenance. Luckily, a role opened in Food & Beverage, and she stepped in with enthusiasm. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to grow here, build an amazing team, and create joyful, lasting experiences for our members.”
Commodore Pamela brings a unique blend of warmth, leadership, and tireless dedication to her role. “My husband Steve and I have been members for a little over eight years—we actually joined before we even moved to the neighborhood. We met so many members right away that we started taking notes on Steve’s phone to remember little facts about each person.”
Within months, Pamela was asked to serve on the Fleet Committee, and she’s since worn many hats, working closely with management to enhance the member experience. “Serving on the Fleet Committee is a lot of work,” she says, “but we’re a big family and have a great time.”
With a knack for conversation and a natural warmth, Pamela connects with members e ortlessly— part diplomat, part social captain. When not at the club, she loves walking (a lot!), boating, and travel. “My brother passed away with pancreatic cancer at 39 years old,” she shares. “It changed my life. At that moment, I made the decision to nd a way to enjoy every single day. Don’t live your life in fear … go out and do something extraordinary – whatever that means to you. Find a little (or more) joy in every day.”
Kathee, Nikole, and Pamela come together as friends, collaborators, con dantes, and champions of the club’s culture. ey respect one another, laugh often, and step in wherever needed. eir leadership is not loud, but it’s unmistakable— present in every polished table setting, every smiling sta interaction, and every lingering conversation on the dock.
“ ere’s no ego here,” says Nikole. “We trust one another. And we genuinely care about this place and each other.”
at care shows in the little things—and those little things add up. “For many members,” Pamela says, “Safe Harbor Peninsula feels like a second home. And that sense of belonging is no accident. It’s the result of thoughtful, present, and deeply capable leadership.”
A Greensboro native, Pamela is a proud mom and grandmother. Her daughter Ashley lives in Oregon with husband Kyle and their two children, Jack (6) and Rosalie (4). Her son Justin lives in Florida with his girlfriend, Josephine.
Kathee concurs: “ ere’s no typical day, but every day we’re building something meaningful and lasting ... including lifelong friendships and connections—which is priceless!” w

IN A MAGAZINE BUILT TO INSPIRE WOMEN, we also believe in listening broadly, and in our column, That’s What He Said, we do just that. It’s our invitation for the men in our world to share, reflect, and contribute to the bigger picture. Whether they’re wise, witty, or wonderfully unexpected, we believe their voices deserve space, too. This month, we hand the mic to Dr. Mahdi Ajjan of OptiMed Hospitalists, PLLC.
DR. MAHDI AJJAN, OPTIMED HOSPITALISTS
FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN TO THE SHORES OF LKN
Growing up in Lattakia, Syria, a beautiful city on the Mediterranean coast, I graduated from medical school there before moving to the United States in 2002. I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. I met my wife, Haya, in Charlotte while she was starting her PhD in Management Information Systems at UNCC. We’ve been married for 21 years and have two amazing boys—Alexander, who is 16, and Julian, who is 10. ey both attend Davidson Day School.
Medicine captivated me in high school. I loved biology and behavioral sciences and knew early on I wanted to help people and stay close to my community. I founded OptiMed Hospitalists in 2010 to provide inpatient care to Lake Norman residents. Our team—physicians, PAs, and nurse practitioners—works in hospitals and rehab centers across the region. e key challenge in healthcare is staying focused. We realized our impact lies in local partnerships and holistic care. Recently, we integrated psychiatry consults into inpatient services and in July 2025, we’ll begin training new residents at Iredell Memorial Hospital. It’s our way of paying it forward.
My father deeply in uenced me. He was the rst scientist I ever knew and modeled integrity, hard work, and the importance of relationships. He also taught me that every obstacle is an opportunity—either to learn or to help someone else. I try to lead with trust, integrity, positivity, and clear communication.
One of my favorite quotes is from Longfellow: “Let us, then, be up and doing, with a heart for any fate; still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.” It reminds me to always be grateful and to take pride in the work we do and nd joy in serving others. I believe in loving yourself rst so you can love others well. We’re committed to whole-person care, integrating mental and physical health—and always seeking opportunities to serve better.
I enjoy reading biographies and leadership books for some relaxing metime. But mostly I love spending time with Haya and our boys. We travel often ... the Swiss Alps was one of our favorites, and we are especially excited about our upcoming trip to Japan. w

HAVE YOU EVER STOOD ON A MOUNTAINTOP AND felt something shift inside you? Or watched the sunrise over a still lake and felt your whole body exhale? That quiet moment when the ocean meets the sky and your thoughts finally hush? That feeling is awe—and it’s more than just a poetic idea. It’s a powerful, measurable force that’s good for your body and soul. It’s gratitude at its core ... gratitude for existence.
Researchers define awe as the feeling we get when we encounter something vast, beautiful, or mysterious—something that expands our understanding and sense of connection. And science is now catching up with what our hearts already know: awe is good medicine.
Studies show that even a few minutes of awe each day can lower stress, reduce inflammation, and boost your mood. It helps us feel more generous, more connected, and more alive. And lucky for us, North Carolina is a treasure trove of awe.
Whether you’re paddling across Lake Norman at sunrise, hiking the misty trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains, or walking barefoot
along the sands of the Outer Banks, awe is waiting for you here. No plane ticket or passport required—just a willingness to pause, breathe, and notice. The best part? Awe doesn’t require a grand gesture. It can be found in the swirl of a seashell, the curve of a mountain road, or even in the laugh of someone you love. It’s all around us, waiting to be felt.
So this summer, take a journey of awe—watch the sunset from your porch. Take the scenic route. Chase waterfalls. Let the beauty of North Carolina shift something inside you. Because when you allow yourself to be awestruck, you’re not just making a memory. You’re doing something deeply healing. And that, friends, is something worth seeking out. w

A Divorce Coach is a trained professional who provides emotional support, practical guidance, and strategic planning throughout the divorce process. The term “Divorce Coach” may lead some to believe that a Divorce Coach only works with individuals who have been married or that the service ends when the divorce decree is signed. A High Conflict Divorce Coach works with anyone who is attempting to navigate a high conflict custody battle, whether married or not. In addition, we excel when it comes to the topic of coparenting and communicating with an oppositional former partner.
