GROWING UP OUR TRAVELS WERE ANYTHING BUT glamorous. We rarely left North Carolina, and vacations meant simple joys—a week at Sunset Beach helping my grandfather bait hooks as he fished in the surf, cousinled talent shows that deserved standing ovations (at least in our minds), or visits to my grandparents in the mountains, where picnics along the Blue Ridge Parkway or Grandfather Mountain were the highlight of our trip. They weren’t the kind of adventures you’d see on social media today, but in my little world, they were more than enough.
In my 20s vacations were even simpler—a little cabin on Lake Norman. No cable, no phone, no internet. Just long, lazy days fishing, floating, and falling in love with the lake that would later become my home.

@LKNWomanMag
I didn’t get a passport until I was 40, and even then, it sat unused for four years! But last summer, I finally put it to use in the most special way—taking my daughter on the trip of a lifetime. Paris! It was a trip she had been planning since she was four years old, after grabbing a book on France from the library that was almost as big as she was

at the time. From then on, we dreamed and planned, flipping through pages filled with grand boulevards, twinkling Eiffel Tower lights, and pastries too beautiful to eat. And for her 18th birthday, we made that dream a reality.
Standing in the middle of Paris, taking in the sights we had only seen in books, was surreal. It was one of those moments when the little girl I once was—the one who thought a trip to the mountains was the peak of adventure—would be proud of the woman I became. The world was so much bigger than I ever imagined.
This month, as we embrace the theme Enjoy the Journey, I’m reminded that travel isn’t about how far you go—it’s about the experiences, the memories, and the way each trip, big or small, shapes who you are. Whether you’re exploring your own backyard, taking a road trip to the mountains, or crossing an ocean for the first time, every journey has meaning.
So, wherever your travels take you—near or far—soak it all in, make the memories, and enjoy every step of the adventure. w

The origins of April Fools’ Day are a bit mysterious, but one of the most popular theories traces it back to France in 1582 when the country switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Before the change, New Year’s Day was celebrated around April 1st. However, not everyone got the memo right away (news traveled slower back then), so some people continued celebrating the New Year in spring. Those who were “behind the times” became the butt of jokes and pranks, earning them the nickname “April Fools.”

The Worst Offenders
EAT, DRINK, AND BE WARY:
Protecting Your Teeth When Traveling
TRAVELING IS AN ADVENTURE FOR THE SOUL— but it can be a challenge for your teeth. With new cuisines to explore and schedules that throw off daily routines, it’s easy to indulge in foods that may not be the best for your dental health. While vacation is a time to unwind, it shouldn’t mean taking a break from good oral habits. Here’s a guide to the best and worst foods for your teeth while traveling, so you can keep your smile as bright as your travel memories.
The Tooth-Friendly Travel Snacks
A great protein-packed snack, nuts provide nutrients that strengthen enamel while being gentler on the teeth when consumed in moderation.
Crunchy veggies like carrots, celery, and cucumbers naturally help cleanse the teeth, removing food particles and bacteria while stimulating saliva production.
Fruits like apples and pears are not only refreshing but also help scrub your teeth naturally. Plus, their ber content bene ts digestion, which in turn can reduce acid buildup in the mouth.
SUGARY TREATS & DRINKS
From tempting pastries at breakfast bu ets to tropical cocktails on the beach, sugary foods and drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth. Sugar, especially when consumed throughout the day, alters the pH of saliva, making it more acidic and leading to tooth decay. If you indulge, rinse your mouth or brush your teeth afterward to minimize the impact.
SPICY OR ACIDIC FOODS
at mouthwatering street food or spicy curry may come with an unexpected downside. Spicy foods can trigger acid re ux, causing stomach acids to linger on the teeth and contribute to erosion. Pairing acidic foods with neutralizers like dairy can help counteract this e ect.
HARD OR CRUNCHY SNACKS
Munching on hard pretzels, ice, or nuts can lead to tooth fractures or breakage—a painful experience that no traveler wants to deal with. If you experience sudden pain or pressure buildup, avoid ying or scuba diving until you can consult a dentist.
STICKY CANDIES & FOODS
Sticky snacks like caramel, gummy candies, and dried fruits can damage existing dental work and speed up decay. e combination of sugar and stickiness allows bacteria to cling to the teeth longer, accelerating the process of enamel breakdown.
ALCOHOL & DEHYDRATING BEVERAGES
Sipping on cocktails or sugary drinks by the pool may be part of the vacation vibe, but excessive consumption leads to dry mouth, tooth decay, and even bleeding gums. Staying properly hydrated is crucial so be sure to drink lots of water. w

When it comes to living her best life, Sheena Shaw (Team Leader/Real Estate Entrepreneur with The Hometown TeamExp Luxury Division) is not just swinging for the fences— she’s rewriting the playbook. In a world where fastballs fly and expectations loom, she’s the curveball no one saw coming— the grand slam in a game of bunts. A Lake Norman native and powerhouse in the local real estate scene, Sheena has always embraced challenges with positivity and determination. Her competitive edge sharpened and honed from an early age ... and it all began on the softball field.

“I started playing at age 5,” Sheena re ects, “and eventually earned a college scholarship as a fastpitch pitcher to Pfei er University. As a pitcher, I had to put in extra time beyond team practices and games to master my craft. I would throw 100 strikes nearly every day. My parents pushed me—something I didn’t always appreciate at the time—but looking back, I’m incredibly grateful. ey helped shape my work ethic, tenacity, and grit, all of which have fueled my success. Being part of a team taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, perseverance, and how to turn setbacks into comebacks. ose same principles have been instrumental in my real estate career, helping me navigate the fast-paced, ever-changing industry with resilience and determination.”
Celebrating her 11th year as a fulltime realtor, Sheena has built a real estate team empowering 11 women—all while having and raising babies! “I wanted to be hands on,” she shares. “I wanted to see their rst step and hear their rst words. I was con dent that I could create a life by design with real estate and be there for my kids. It goes by in a blink, and we don’t ever get this time back.” Now that her kids are a bit older (Ezra, 9, and Saige, 5), Sheena and her husband, Jeremy, coach Ezra’s travel softball team ... embracing the full-circle moment and opportunity to pass along her passion, knowledge, and experience.
While Sheena was growing her real estate business, Jeremy was opening e Cedar Stump Pub (Troutman, Statesville, and Catawba). e three locations, coupled with Sheena’s local brand, have come together to lift up the North End of Lake Norman. Jeremy also started a dock building business, ShawMills Marine Construction, during covid when his pubs were shut down, and the business is still thriving today.
Although Sheena knows the entire Lake Norman area, her passion is to bring awareness to just how special the North End is. “I like to promote the area with my social media content,” she
says, “and by educating home buyers. I even started a YouTube channel, Discover the North End - Lake Norman, and I have a lot planned this year. Many buyers do not know about this side of the lake and all it has to o er. And while my mission is focused on the North End, I am passionate about supporting local businesses and families rst and often choose to partner with them as thirdparty vendors such as electricians, plumbers, lenders, and the like.”
Spreading her love for the North End, Sheena helped start the Troutman Ruritan chapter, a nonpro t organization dedicated to supporting the local community. ey just obtained their 501(c)(3) this past year, and they are beyond excited for this new opportunity. Noticing that many nonpro ts are primarily made up of individuals over 50, Sheena recognized the need to engage the next generation of parents and young adults.
“People under 50 are often busy trying to make a living and support their families,” Sheena points out, “so we wanted to create a way for them to make a big impact with minimal commitment while bridging the gap between generations. Children are also welcome to join, and many students from South Iredell High School are getting involved. is provides a great opportunity for people of all ages, including entire families, to contribute to their community. Leave It to the French
Every Easter Monday, the residents of Haux in France crack more than 4,500 eggs into a gigantic pan to create an enormous omelet that serves over 1,000 people.

In Hungary, women dress up in traditional clothes on Easter Sunday and get splashed with water. This ritual is associated with fertility and cleansing rites left over from pagan times.
Tobacco at Easter?
In Papua New Guinea, Easter trees at the front of churches are decorated with sticks of tobacco and packs of cigarettes.

INGREDIENTS:
1 frozen pie crust, thawed
1 4-oz. bag of real bacon bits
½ cup of chopped onion
6 ounces of shredded Swiss or cheddar cheese or combination of both
3 ounces of parmesan cheese
4 eggs lightly beaten
1 cup half-and-half cream
DIRECTIONS:
1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2 Place thawed pie crust into greased pie pan.
3 Mix all ingredients together except for the eggs and cream which you will lightly beat in a separate bowl.
4 Put the cheese and bacon mixture into your pie crust first (NOTE: The mixture should entirely fill the pie crust, and it looks VERY full even before you pour the egg batter on top; this aids in the quiche texture and prevents a soggy crust).
5 Pour the eggs/cream mixture evenly over the top of the pie.
6 Bake for about an hour or until top of quiche begins to turn brown and the center is firm, not wet.

THE SCOOP on DENTAL IMPLANTS
IN THE PAST 25 YEARS, IMPLANT DENTISTRY has grown by leaps and bounds. It has gone from a rare and unique procedure to one that has become part of everyday dentistry.
e father of modern implant dentistry was a Swedish physician studying blood ow in bone during the 1950s. During his experiments, he would place titanium cylinders into the bone to help with his measurements and, ultimately, he found that the titanium could not be removed. e cylinders had become fused to the bone. Using this new discovery, he spent years designing a practical application, and in 1965, he placed the rst titanium implant into a human mouth and the eld has been evolving ever since.
THE ADVANTAGES OF IMPLANTS
Implants have many advantages and allow for restorations that were not previously possible. Prior to implants, missing teeth were replaced with dentures or bridges. Dentures are generally disliked because of their lack of retention and stability, as well as the fact that they are removed at night. Bridges o er a non-removable option with more stability; however, you have to grind down adjacent teeth to allow the bridge to t, and maintenance can be challenging. Additionally, bridges cannot be used to replace the most posterior teeth since there is no other tooth to “bridge” to. Implants are free standing, easily cleansable, permanent restorations. e implant(s) can be used to support one tooth, multiple teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth. Some implants require a couple of months of healing prior to having a tooth placed on it, while other implants can have teeth placed immediately, depending on the speci c situation.
WHAT TO EXPECT
On the day of surgery, the surgeon will make a gentle incision in the gingival tissue and prepare the bone for the implant. After it is in place, a healing cap is put on the implant and the gum tissue is sutured around it, allowing the implant to heal. is is when the special properties of titanium take over and the implant starts to fuse to the bone. After 6-12 weeks, the implant will be integrated and unable to be removed. It is now ready for the new crown.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN ORAL SURGEON
When looking for an oral surgeon to place dental implants, they should be pro cient in a few key areas. Successful implants are based on atraumatic extractions of the non-restorable teeth, good site preparation (bone grafting), and sound implant techniques— including implant brands that use quality materials and have a long track record of use and success. RV INSURANCE
GOES BEYOND AUTO INSURANCE
Covering an RV is not just like getting ordinary auto insurance. The motorhome and camper experience brings a few extra potential risks that make this specialized policy worthwhile as it offers more protection for the unique risks RVs face. RV insurance is made to safeguard your RV against damage from incidents both in and out of your control and offer liability insurance if you are responsible for injuries or property damage when operating or parked at a campsite or RV park.
COMPREHENSIVE & COLLISION
LIABILITY & MEDICAL PAYMENTS
Whether you are planning a family vacation or weekend road trip for your travel plans, you want to have peace of mind on the open road. We’ll work with you to make sure owning an RV is a rewarding and safe experience.
ADDITIONAL RV COVERAGES
Comprehensive coverage protects your RV against events such as theft, vandalism, windshield damage, acts of nature, fire, and accidents with animals. Collision coverage covers damage to your RV if you collide with another vehicle or object, such as a fence, tree, or guardrail.
North Carolina law requires RV liability coverage for motorhomes. Liability can pay for damage or injuries you cause while driving your RV and may cover legal fees up to your coverage limit. Medical payments coverage may cover medical bills, up to your coverage limit, for you and your passengers if you are in an accident.
UNINSURED/ UNDERINSURED MOTORIST
If your RV is damaged by a driver who is not insured or does not have enough to cover the damage or injuries, this coverage may pay to repair or replace the RV and for injuries you and your passengers suffer, up to your coverage limits.
You may also get coverage for emergency expenses, personal items inside your RV, pet injuries, roadside assistance, full timer’s liability if your RV is your permanent residence, and more. We can customize your coverage selections to fit your unique needs.
neurodiversity:
A MOTHER'S PERSPECTIVE ON AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH
APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH, but within the autism community, it’s more accurately celebrated as Autism Acceptance Month. Awareness implies simply noticing autism, but acceptance is where real change happens—where we embrace, include, and uplift autistic individuals for who they truly are. As a mother to an incredible 10-year-old boy on the spectrum, this shift in language matters deeply to me. My son doesn’t need to be pitied or “fixed.” He needs to be understood, included, and cherished exactly as he is.
Too often, children like my son are treated as “other.” They are either underestimated or expected to conform to neurotypical standards. I ask—no, I plead—for a world where my son is treated as typical, while receiving the accommodations that anyone living with a disability deserves. Inclusivity isn’t just about adding ramps or quiet spaces; it’s about creating environments where individuals don’t have to mask their true selves to be accepted.
The statistics on autism are growing, with current data showing that roughly 1 in 36 children are diagnosed. My son’s autism isn’t just a diagnosis—it’s part of his genetic makeup, linked to a recognized syndrome caused by mutations in the PPP2R5D gene. To me this understanding affirms that both genetics and epigenetics play a role, comforting me when my instinct as a mother is to search for answers or wonder if I could have done something differently. His uniqueness isn’t something to be corrected because he simply can’t be—he will always be this way. It’s something to be embraced.
So perhaps autism isn’t becoming more common, but rather, we’re finally recognizing it in those who came before us—those whose quirks and sensitivities were once left unexplained. As humanity continues to evolve, blending differences across generations, neurodivergence will continue to be seen. Not because autism is increasing, but because we are finally learning to understand and appreciate the spectrum within our species' neurological system.
And that’s a beautiful thing. The more we learn about this subset of humanity, the more we can live with curiosity instead of judgment. We can move from awareness to acceptance, from tolerance to celebration. Because my son—and all autistic individuals—deserve nothing less. w

airport ZEN: ENJOY
CULTIVATING PATIENCE
THE JOURNEY!
MINDFUL MOMENTS
AIRPORTS ARE OFTEN SYNONYMOUS
WITH STRESS— long security lines, delayed flights, cramped seating, and the constant hum of announcements. But what if the chaos of travel could actually become a spiritual practice? By shifting perspective and embracing mindfulness, you can transform your airport experience into an opportunity for inner peace, reflection, and presence.
Delays and long layovers are usually seen as inconveniences, but they can be gifts in disguise. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through your phone, embrace the present moment. Find a quiet corner and practice meditation or breathwork. Even a few minutes of deep breathing—inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four—can reset your nervous system and bring a sense of calm. Journaling is another great way to turn waiting time into a moment of introspection.
Rather than rushing through the airport with tension, consider your journey from the moment you step inside as an opportunity to practice mindfulness. Take a deep breath and walk with intention. Observe the energy around you, but don’t absorb it. Instead of seeing fellow travelers as obstacles, view them as companions on a shared human journey. This simple shift in perspective can soften frustration and foster compassion.
GRATITUDE AT 30,000 FEET
CHECK YOUR EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE
Airport security is often the most stressful part of travel, but it can also be a metaphor for letting go. As you place your belongings on the conveyor belt, imagine that you’re shedding unnecessary burdens—negative thoughts, worries, or anything weighing you down. Each step forward is a step toward clarity and renewal.
Once you board the plane, resist the urge to immediately plug into movies or distractions. Instead, take a moment to appreciate the miracle of flight—the fact that you’re soaring through the sky, moving through time zones, and experiencing the world from a perspective that was once unimaginable. Close your eyes and set an intention for your journey. Whether it’s a vacation, business trip, or visit to loved ones, acknowledge the privilege of travel and express gratitude for the experience. w
