MAY IS TRADITIONALLY A MONTH TO CELEBRATE MOMS— but for many of us, Mother’s Day is a bit more complicated.
As a child, I loved the traditions. We wore red corsages to church (a true Southern classic), then my three sisters and I would dress in our Sunday best and head to the local garden store to pick out flowers for Mama. We'd proudly present homemade cards with glitter, stickers, and poetic gems like, “You give so much love-o-rama, I love you Mama.” Cheesy? Absolutely. But to our mom, they were masterpieces. She saved every one.

Now that I’m a mom myself, I completely get it. Every scribbled note, every handmade treasure—they all matter. But after my daughter was born, Mother’s Day took on a new depth. I became seriously ill and later had to undergo surgery that would prevent me from having any more children.

Whether you’re raising kids, mentoring others, loving deeply, or being adored by a furry best friend— we see you. This month, we honor all the ways women show up, love big, and change the world. w
That was a loss I hadn’t expected—one that made Mother’s Day bittersweet for a long time. I was so grateful for my daughter, but I also carried the quiet grief of what could’ve been. It made me realize how many women face this day with a mixture of joy and heartache—those who’ve lost their mothers, those who long to become one, and those whose path to motherhood looks different than expected.
That’s why this month’s issue is about more than just traditional motherhood. We’re celebrating Moms & Mentors—and yes, pets, too! Because nurturing, love, and guidance come in many forms.

THE FIRST OFFICIAL MOTHER’S DAY IN THE U.S. WAS CELEBRATED IN 1908,
thanks to Anna Jarvis, who campaigned to honor her late mother. She also established the tradition of giving carnations, believing they symbolized a mother’s love.
While the date may vary, Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 40 countries around the world.
The word “mom” comes from a variety of languages but is universally similar—such as “mamma” in many European languages and “mãe” in Portuguese. It’s thought that “mom” is one of the easiest sounds for babies to make.

It is true
Mother, A Cradle To Hold Me Maya Angelou
I was created in you. It is also true That you were created for me. I owned your voice. It was shaped and tuned to soothe me. Your arms were molded Into a cradle to hold me, to rock me. The scent of your body was the air Perfumed for me to breathe.
OUR MOTHERS ARE EVERYTHING TO US: her arms made to cradle; her breast upon which to lean. At first, we don’t want to be separated from her, but Mom’s job is to teach us to do just that … to earn our wings and fly. Even in our teenage years, we still love and want our mother even though we might show it with eyerolls and odd glares … we finally come to realize the wisdom she has imparted. No matter our stage of life, whether an infant, young child, teenager, or adult, our mother’s love for us is unconditional.
Mom, poet, dancer, singer, activist, and scholar Maya Angelou published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. Receiving dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees, Maya penned Mother: A Cradle to Hold in 2006 as a collection of poems praising mothers. The book entered The New York Times Best Seller list the same year it was released. In words we can all embrace, here is an Mother: A Cradle To Hold Me by Maya Angelou.
Mother,
During those early, dearest days I did not dream that you had A large life which included me, For I had a life Which was only you.
Time passed steadily and drew us apart. I was unwilling. I feared if I let you go You would leave me eternally. You smiled at my fears, saying I could not stay in your lap forever …
You were always the heart of happiness to me, Bringing nougats of glee, Sweets of open laughter.
During the years when you knew nothing And I knew everything, I loved you still. Condescendingly of course, From my high perch Of teenage wisdom. I grew older and Was stunned to find How much knowledge you had gleaned. And so quickly.
Mother, I have learned enough now To know I have learned nearly nothing. On this day When mothers are being honored, Let me thank you … I thank you, Mother. I love you.
-PRENEUR
ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT — you don’t have to be Lori Greiner to have the dream, the drive, the grit, the want-to! Female entrepreneurs are making lasting contributions to the business landscape and have become an essential part of the U.S. economic health. But what does it take to be a successful entrepreneur AND run a family? This month we hear from LKNW Mom-preneur, Annie anson, owner of The Closet iche.
First and foremost, pray about it! Sit down with your family and put together the pros and cons. Know that it’s not easy but if you are determined and willing to put in the hard work, you can do anything you set your mind to. Don’t be afraid to be different and stand out. Strive to do better and be better. Success doesn’t define you by how big your business is but how you treat people and contribute to others around you. Refuse to settle, find your passion, and chase after it. Becoming an entrepreneur is a strategic game of uncertainty with a lot of challenges and uphill battles, but there are huge benefits to owning your own company so it’s worth it; but make sure you really want to do this, be ready to put in the work, and learn to grow thick skin.
I embrace what I call The 5 Building Blocks of Success: Honesty, Commitment, Hard Work, Faith, and Love. Also, for me personally as an entrepreneur, mother, and wife, it is my integrity and hard work ethic that is my strong suit. Every day we are faced with obstacles and rollercoasters but it’s how we react to those situations and CHOOSE to handle them that matters. As long as you look to always do what is right for the customer and what is right for your family and home, you can’t go wrong.
To make the decision to be an entrepreneur is not just a sacrifice that I made; it’s a sacrifice my family (husband and kids) made with me. Sometimes it means bringing the computer home and doing design work while my 7-year-old does his homework right next to me ... I’ve even taught him how to do some CAD software designs! My husband works for my company out in the field all day so most nights we catch up on what’s going on at work—not ideal but it works for us. He believed in me and my vision for this company so much that he, too, made a leap of faith to come work for me full-time.
There are very important routines that I have a hardline for and some of those are reading with my son before bedtime each night, dinnertime with my husband and kids, going to lunch with my oldest son at least once a month for one-on-one time, and church on Sundays. I may not be able to be “present” 100 percent of the time for every event or volunteer as much as I’d like, but showing up for my kids and family when it matters is a priority I hold tightly. It’s not lost on me how quickly time flies and before you know it, the kids are all grown up. You can’t get that time back so I fully embrace the now ... with a sincere nod of gratitude to God multiple times a day.

Navigating GRIEF:
LOSING BOTH OF MY PARENTS within a few short years of each other, both unexpectedly, were two of the hardest experiences of my life. Grief doesn’t come with a manual, and no one prepares you for the way it sneaks up on you....how a familiar scent, a song, or even a simple phrase can bring a flood of emotions. For a long time, I felt like I was just trying to survive each day, carrying the weight of my loss while the world moved on around me. But through that journey, I learned something powerful: grief doesn’t mean forgetting. Instead, it can become a way to honor and carry forward the love we shared.
FINDING GRATITUDE AND HEALING THROUGH JOURNALING
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of nding the GOOD in GRIEF. It may sound impossible at rst. Like how can there be anything good in something so painful? But grief, at its core, is a re ection of love. It truly is a whole lot of love with no place to go. I started making it a habit to take time each day to focus on gratitude. Even on the hardest days, I would remind myself of the moments I was lucky enough to share with my parents. Instead of focusing solely on the pain of their absence, I chose to be thankful for the impact they had on my life which included the lessons they taught me, the memories we created, and the values they instilled in me.
GENERATIONS OF
Smiles
There is still time to schedule your dental implant consultation! Trust your oral surgery to the experience, reputation and quality of care with... Dr. Michael Coleman & Dr. Michael Foran
Music has a way of bringing those memories rushing back. Every time I hear a Neil Diamond song, I think of my father. His love for those songs became part of the soundtrack of my childhood, and even now, hearing them makes me feel close to him. At rst, those moments were bittersweet, a painful reminder of what I had lost. But over time, I began to see them as gifts and small reminders that he’s still with me in the things he loved, the music that made him smile, and the memories we shared.
Writing became my safe haven. One day I was challenged to write a few happy memories about them and the next thing I knew I was sitting down with a pen and a notebook doing this several days a week. I wrote what I missed, what I remembered, and what I never wanted to forget. I wrote about my mom spending hours in the grocery store, nding the perfect ingredients to make a meal that would bring our family together. I wrote about the way she always told me to smile and be kind, no matter what. I wrote about my father and the way
music connected us, how his favorite songs still bring him back to me in an instant. I'd see a cardinal, I would write about it. I'd smell her perfume, I would write about it. I saw a beautiful sunset, I would write about it.

If you’re navigating loss, I encourage you to take small steps each day. Find something to be grateful for, no matter how small. Write down your memories so they stay alive in your heart. And most of all, give yourself grace. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but with time, re ection, and gratitude, you can learn to carry your grief in a way that honors those you’ve lost, while still embracing the life ahead of you. w
Journaling helped me process my grief in a way nothing else could. It allowed me to keep them close, to give my emotions a voice, and to see how far I’d come in my healing. My grief was no longer heavy on my shoulders, but taking up space on paper that I could keep forever. at’s why I created the Good Grief Journal, to give others the same space for re ection, healing, and remembering. It’s designed for just ve minutes a day, making it simple yet powerful. It’s not about moving on, it’s about moving forward while holding onto the love and memories that shaped you.

Lori Miggins is an online health and fitness coach and hormone health advocate passionate about helping women thrive in midlife. She lives on Lake Norman and loves the lake life, a natural fit since she grew up on the salt water in Long Island, NY. She is a mom of three, married to her college sweetheart, and believes that family is everything. Her mission? To help others create a healthy, fulfilling life they love.
Dr. medicine,
GOLNAR LASHGARI
always knew she wanted to make a di erence in people’s lives. Growing up in a rural town in Southern California, she dreamed big, a mindset inspired by her father’s words. “When I was very young, I asked my dad what the best job in the world was. He said being a doctor, and somehow that answer planted a seed that never went away,” she recalls. at seed led her to medical school in Philadelphia, where she met her husband, and eventually to North Carolina, where they planted roots and started their family. Now, as a physician at Fairview Family Medicine with Piedmont HealthCare, she’s not just treating patients—she’s building lasting relationships.
moth hood, AND MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS
Dr. Lashgari sees medicine as more than just diagnosing and treating illnesses. She and her team create an environment where patients feel valued and cared for. “It’s not just about medical care; it’s about the relationships we build. When people walk into our o ce, we want them to feel seen, heard, and cared for,” she says. e deep trust she shares with her patients is what makes her work so ful lling.
Balancing a demanding career with raising four children under the age of 7 is no easy feat, and Dr. Lashgari is the rst to admit that perfection isn’t the goal.
“Juggling work and family life? I’ll be honest, I don’t always juggle it well, and I think that’s something many moms relate to,” she says with a laugh. “My kids are a whirlwind of energy,
but it’s this happy chaos that fuels us.” She and her husband make it work by leaning on each other and embracing the messy, beautiful reality of parenthood. “We’re not striving for perfection, because ‘good enough’ is good enough.”
Every day is an opportunity to take another step forward, embracing both the challenges and the joys along the way.
Outside of work, Dr. Lashgari nds joy in dancing, calling it her “ultimate stress-buster.” She also cherishes time with her family, especially outdoor adventures that allow them to connect and create lasting
Despite the challenges, she nds immense joy in her work. “ e best part of my job is celebrating my patients’ victories,” she shares. “Whether it’s something small like an improvement in blood work or big news from their specialists, like a cancer-free scan—those moments make my job even more rewarding.” While she loves her profession, she acknowledges that the administrative side of medicine can be overwhelming. ankfully, she has a strong support system at Piedmont HealthCare that allows her to focus on what she does best— caring for her patients, who are truly like family to her!
fueling her love for exploration. “It wasn’t just about the destinations—it was about the mindset my parents taught us: embrace new experiences with an open heart.”
When asked what she’s most proud of, her answer is simple: “Personally, I’m most proud of seeing my children smile and hearing them laugh every day. Professionally, I’m proud of the work I do with my patients—building trust, taking care of people, and serving my community.” For Dr. Lashgari, every day is an opportunity to take another step forward, embracing both the challenges and the joys along the way. w memories. A Mentoring Mindset
MOST OF US HAVE HAD A TEACHER, a coach, a music, or art mentor who has made a positive impact in our lives. In fact, many people when telling the story of “how I got here” give immediate recognition to someone who inspired them, had faith in them, taught them, guided, and invested in them.
Mentors write on the slate of who we are and who we are to become. They assume many responsibilities and share these common traits:
A respect for and a sincere desire to help our youth
Active listening and communication skills
Patience and empathy
Ability to guide, teach, and problem-solve
Flexibility
Before becoming a mentor, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What time commitments can I make?
What age of youth would I like to work with?
Would I like to work with one child or with a group of children?
Would I like to team with other adults to mentor a child or a group of children?
What types of activities interest me? Do I want to help a youth learn a specific skill, pursue an interest, help with schoolwork, or just be a caring adult friend?
Mentoring relationships are a shared opportunity, promoting growth and learning for all involved. Many mentors say that the rewards they gain are as impactful and meaningful for them as they are for the mentees. For example, mentors report the following benefits:
More fun and positivity in their daily life
Personal growth by learning more about themselves
Improved self-esteem by making a difference for others
A better understanding of other cultures and a greater appreciation for diversity
More productive at work
Enhanced and improved relationships—with their own children, families, friends, and the community at large. w

put it into words or to quantify it ... it is a blessing and a dream come true to have this as my career, which I often view as a ministry. As the most recent and prominent example, I had a new patient come in last November who expressed to me that he was in kidney failure and in desperate need to nd a donor. His faith was rm that God would provide him with this, and I immediately felt the calling to donate ... I was the perfect match! On April 17, 2024, he and I had kidney surgery, and he is doing well! Dr. Collins’ Earthly heroes are her mom, Susan, who taught her there’s nothing she can’t achieve; her husband who is her rock; her friend and o ce manager, Cindy, who made her promise to never stop growing; her team of co-workers who continue to show up for her in all areas of life; and of course, her patients. “I am extremely close to my patients,” she lovingly notes. “It’s amazing
to see them grow up, graduate from college, get married, and now bring their children to me. It’s incredibly rewarding. We also have our dog, Goose, at work who sits on patients’ laps to calm fears. Earning trust is one of the biggest challenges in dentistry, and Goose helps bridge that gap.”
When she’s not practicing dentistry, Dr. Collins indulges her love for decorating. If she’s not remodeling the o ce, she is working on her home décor. For her, creating warm and inviting spaces is her own personal form of creativity, just like reconstructing smiles. She also has a passion for travel and recollects a particularly special voyage she took with her grandparents: “ ey took us on a world cruise. Andrew and I did the two-month leg from Florida to Australia, visiting South America, the Panama Canal, the French Polynesian Islands, New Zealand, and Australia. We’ve also done a Baltic cruise to Amsterdam, Sweden, Norway, and Russia.”
Looking back, Dr. Collins has many reasons to smile but she is most proud of her 20year marriage and her children. “ ey are each so unique

Getting this life-saving screening doesn’t have to be so daunting, thanks to Iredell Imaging at Mooresville.
WOMEN
1 IN 8 will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and in recent years, breast cancer incidence rates have increased by 0.5 percent per year.
The good news is that mammograms can help find breast cancer early – before it spreads and when it is most treatable. In fact, when breast cancer is detected before it spreads, the average 5-year survival rate is 99 percent.
After age 40, women should receive a mammogram yearly. Early breast cancer detection can save your life. Talk to your doctor about specific breast-health concerns.
“We provide excellent service and care to our patients using the most recent technology. Our radiology team is highly skilled and experienced in breast imaging, giving you the best possible quality of care,”
If you have financial issues or are uninsured, please don’t let that stop you from taking care of yourself and having your routine mammogram. Iredell Health Foundation has resources available to those who need them. It just might save your life.

Hi!
My name is Carlos, and I’m 4 years old! I was born in sunny Guadalajara, Mexico, but my adventures started early. I spent my rst year living in the hustle and bustle of New York City and then three years ago, I packed my chew toys and moved to Lake Norman, and let me tell you… I love it here! People are so friendly, and everyone wants to pet me! When I’m not napping (which I do professionally), I love the beach and going for walks. People have always said I’m cute — but now it’s o cial! Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I feel so loved and can’t wait to see you all around the neighborhood!
With tail wags and kisses, Carlos

PAWS AND PURPOSE—
HEAL , love!
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
— ANATOLE FRANCE
For Dr. Amanda DeMaster and Dr. Rebecca Schenck (veterinarians at Dry Pond Animal Hospital and Pet Resort in Denver) that awakening happened early in life—and it echoed through every chapter of their lives. United by a shared devotion to the well-being of animals and the people who cherish them, these two compassionate veterinarians have made it their life’s work to heal, comfort, and advocate for every wagging tail, twitching whisker, and gentle nudge that walks through their doors. At the heart of their journey is not just medicine, but a profound belief in the unspoken bond between pets and their people—a connection that continues to inspire their care, every single day.
Dr. Amanda DeMaster grew up in Cary, North Carolina. Her path to veterinary medicine began when she was just a toddler. “My parents say from the age of 2,” she recalls with a smile, “I would tell people I wanted to be a veterinarian and with a natural love for animals, a curious mind for science, and a heart for helping others, the veterinary profession seemed inevitable.”
After earning her microbiology degree from NC State, Dr. DeMaster found herself at a crossroads: accept a fellowship at the NIH in Washington, D.C. or head straight into veterinary school. Fortunately, NC State allowed her to defer admission, giving her the best of both worlds. “I loved my year in D.C. and met so many lifelong friends and colleagues,” she shares. Her journey continued with an internship at Texas A&M, where she not only sharpened her clinical skills but also met her husband, a fellow veterinarian.
Dr. Rebecca Schenck’s story is similarly rooted in early passion. Growing up between Greensboro, North Carolina, and Brentwood, Tennessee, she fondly remembers childhood games where stuffed animals were the patients and she was the vet. “I turned this game into reality,” she laughs. “It was a long, hard journey but that dream of being a veterinarian did come true, and I am so grateful each day.”
After graduating from Clemson University and completing veterinary school at Mississippi State in 2022, Dr. Schenck moved to Charlotte to
be closer to her family— and, of course, Clemson football. “My whole family went to Clemson, and we love Clemson football family reunions,” she explains.
Both veterinarians are now thriving in their roles at Dry Pond Animal Hospital, balancing professional ambition with personal growth. Dr. DeMaster, a mother of two, works part-time to match her kids’ school schedules. “Now that both of my kids are in school, I basically work the hours they are in school—which sometimes means working through lunch and catching up on emails at home or phone calls on the way to pick up my kids,” she says. Her secret to staying on top of it all? “Lots of lists—post-it notes everywhere!”
Dr. Schenck, who doesn’t yet have children but is a proud dog-mom to Cleo and Paisley, also knows the challenges of balancing work and life. “I try to not take work home but I can’t tell you how many times I have lost sleep worrying about a patient,” she admits. “If I’m home, I am not working—but I’ll probably still be worrying about something at work.”
Despite the challenges, both women find deep meaning in their work. Dr. DeMaster treasures the continuity of care. “I really enjoy getting to walk families through different stages of their pets’ lives.” And Dr. Schenck echoes that sentiment: “What I most want to accomplish is making families feel whole. I want to heal our best friends and help strengthen the human-animal bond.”

As dog and animal lovers ourselves at Fogle Insurance Group, we know how important pet insurance can be for pet owners.
MISCONCEPTION OF VET CARE COSTS
When it comes to being pet parents, we understand that there are often unexpected medical misfortunes that arise. Many pet owners drastically underestimate the cost of veterinary care. A pet’s lifetime vet bill total is realistically around $16,000. As most pet owners are without pet insurance, more than half would be unable to pay out of pocket for a vet bill over $1,000.
PET INSURANCE
HOW PET INSURANCE CAN HELP VET COSTS
Pet insurance protects against unexpected vet bills by offering a comprehensive and flexible plan to help cover costs of care, surgery, diagnostics, and treatments arising from these unexpected injuries and illnesses. The monthly and annual premium of your pet insurance policy will vary depending on the age, breed, and gender of your dog or cat, as well as your choice of deductible and reimbursement amount.

pets HEALING POWER
GET YOUR STEPS IN AND YOUR SUNSHINE ON
Having a pet—especially a dog— naturally encourages more physical activity and gets you out in nature. Regular walks, playtime, and outdoor adventures not only keep pets healthy but also benefit their owners. Exercise is known to boost endorphins, the brain’s natural mood enhancers, helping to fight stress and improve overall mental well-being.
A SENSE OF PURPOSE AND COMPASSION
Caring for a pet fosters responsibility and purpose, which can be particularly helpful for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Knowing that a pet relies on them gives owners a sense of fulfillment and strengthens their emotional resilience.
FOR CENTURIES, PETS HAVE BEEN MORE THAN JUST COMPANIONS— they have been sources of comfort, joy, and emotional support. Whether it’s a playful dog, a purring cat, or even a small hamster, pets have a unique way of improving mental well-being. Scientific research and personal stories alike highlight how animals help reduce stress, ease anxiety, and bring happiness into our lives.
STRESS REDUCTION AND EMOTIONAL COMFORT
One of the most well-known benefits of having a pet is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies show that petting an animal releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. The simple act of stroking a pet’s fur or watching fish swim can bring a sense of calm and relaxation. Pets also provide unconditional love and companionship, which can be incredibly comforting during difficult times. They don’t judge, they don’t criticize, and they are always there—offering a wagging tail or a soft cuddle when we need it most.
A REMEDY FOR LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION
THE SCIENCE BACKS IT UP
For people struggling with loneliness or depression, pets can be a lifeline. They provide a sense of purpose and routine, encouraging their owners to get out of bed, feed them, and take care of their needs. This structure can be crucial for individuals who might otherwise feel disconnected from daily life. Pets also encourage social interaction. Whether it’s chatting with other dog owners at the park, sharing pet photos with friends, or even just having a furry friend to talk to, pets help bridge the gap between isolation and connection.
Numerous studies confirm the positive impact of pets on mental health. Research has shown that pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety levels, and improved mood. Therapy animals are very helpful in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools to help provide emotional support. w
