AS THE DAUGHTER AND SISTER OF EDUCATORS, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication teachers pour into their work—the late nights grading papers, the early mornings prepping lessons, and the inbetween moments when they’re not just teaching, but also counseling, comforting, coaching, and championing their students.
That’s why this month, we’re celebrating teachers—the real-life superheroes shaping the next generation one spelling test and science experiment at a time. And let’s be honest, after a year of parent-teacher conferences, lesson planning, classroom wrangling, and wearing about twelve different hats a day, summer vacation isn’t just a perk—it’s a wellearned necessity.
My own favorite teacher was my first-grade teacher, Miss Hamrick. Believe it or not, I was a very shy child—quiet, unsure, and content to hide behind the louder voices in the room. But Miss Hamrick saw something in me. She helped me find my voice. She encouraged my creativity and made me feel seen, even at just six years old. She was the first person outside of my family who recognized the potential in me and made sure I knew it too.
Today, we’ve built a sweet friendship, and I cherish every chance I get to catch up with her—not as the shy little girl in the front row, but as an adult who now understands just how much teachers give.
So here’s to the educators—past, present, and future—who show up, pour in, and make lasting impressions. You are appreciated more than words could ever express. w

As summer winds down and school buses roll out, it’s time to trade beach bags for backpacks—but don’t worry, we’ve got your back (and your backpacks!) covered. We’ve packed this section as carefully as a school lunch, with everything you need to make the transition smoother. From fresh lunchbox ideas and clever organization hacks to teacher tips and parent pickme-ups, we’re here to help you hit the ground running.
Why did the student eat his homework? Because the teacher said it was a piece of cake!
PIZZA CRUST:
DIRECTIONS:
1 lb. Ground Chicken
1 Egg 1/2 cup
Shredded Mozzarella
1 Preheat the oven to 400F.
As the school year kicks off and the schedule fills up this recipe is a total weeknight win. It's high in protein, quick to make, and kid-approved—what more could a busy parent ask for? My kids gobbled this up without even realizing the crust was made of chicken instead of dough. Here’s to keeping dinner easy and nutritious this school year!
3/4 cup
Seasoned Italian Breadcrumbs
2 Mix the ground chicken, egg, shredded mozzarella, breadcrumbs, and parmesan in a large bowl. Once combined, flatten out to form a “crust” on a parchment paper lined baking sheet (I use a half-size sheet pan). Make sure to press into a thin, even rectangle shape and then drizzle the top with olive oil. Bake for about 25 minutes.
1/4 cup Grated Parmesan
3 Once baked, evenly spread your pasta sauce of choice over the crust and add your favorite toppings. Crank the oven up to 425F.
1 tbsp.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 Bake for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melty. Then broil for 4-5 minutes, or until you get those little brown bubbles on top of the cheese and the edges of the crust are crispy.

OVER 73 MILLION students enroll in school across the U.S. each year.
Keep scissors, pencils, glue, and markers in a shower caddy or tackle box. Wherever they do homework, everything’s ready to roll.
Include books, lavender spray, and a nightlight. A predictable wind-down routine helps with earlier bedtimes after summer freedom.
Why was the math book sad? It had too many problems.
Jack Williams, a Huntersville high school junior, completed an epic year-long book drive to collect 1500 new and gently used books for the children in the Pathway Program at Angels & Sparrows, where he has been a reading buddy for four years. He conceived the idea, marketing plan, social media campaign, and managed the entire project. Thanks to his incredible effort, each child received 20 books to read over the summer break. Thank you, Jack! you’re welcome!

Owner HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER / BHANVI
There’s a dynamic duo making waves around the lake—one through the language of dance, the other through cutting-edge academics.
Neha Bhargav, a globally acclaimed classical dancer and finalist on Bigg Boss 3 and Dancing Star 3, is the founder of Bhanvi Dance Academy. For the past five years, she has nurtured students of all ages in Bharatanatyam, Bollywood, semi-classical, and folk dance. “It is a passion to teach dance,” she says. “I am blessed to work with such amazing people ... I am currently training participants for the Festival of India.” Her expressive storytelling and cultural mentorship are helping preserve traditional Indian art forms while inspiring confidence and creativity in her students.
Her husband, Dr. Bhargav Gangadhara, is also deeply invested in education. A Ph.D. in Cloud Computing with over 50 international publications and a U.S. patent to his name, he now owns Huntington Learning Center in Huntersville. A senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and editorial board member for two international journals, Dr. Gangadhara applies his deep technical expertise to help young learners succeed through innovative teaching strategies.
Demi Ckezepis
Kindergarten Teacher
LAKE NORMAN CHARTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Together, they are shaping bright futures— through knowledge, creativity, and a shared passion for lifelong learning and teaching.
veteran Demi Ckezepis lives by the adage, “Everything I need to know, I learned in Kindergarten.” Guiding Lake Norman Charter Elementary’s youngest Knights, she calls those first school days “a magical mix of joy, chaos, curiosity, and laughter.”
Demi always had a heart for helping others so teaching felt like the perfect combination of making a meaningful impact while doing something that brings her joy every single day. Her bright classroom doorway carries the mantra, “Be brave. Be kind. Be you.”
It’s a daily reminder, she says, that “bravery, kindness and
authenticity matter—even at 5 years old.”
Each afternoon ends with Happy Mail, a dash of suspense and celebration. Demi watches for moments of courage or compassion, then offers hushed hints before one child claims a note to tuck proudly into a backpack—closing the day on a triumphant note.
The connections she nurtures last well beyond Room 123.
“One former student came back to give me a hug every single morning on her way to first grade,” Demi smiles. “She never missed a day, and I felt that daily hug was a silent ‘thank you’ and it makes such a difference in all of our lives. Spread the love ... it’s contagious!”
AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, Katie Beamer’s journey to the classroom started during her own high school years. “My 11th grade English teacher,” she shares, “introduced me to the perspective that literature is an exploration of ideas. As an avid reader, it changed everything for me.”
Now in her fifth year at CSD and her tenth in education overall, Katie teaches 9th and 10th grade English. Her favorite part? The lasting bonds she builds with her students.
“Building relationships with students is my favorite part of teaching,” she smiles. “I have the gift of maintaining these bonds as they grow through high school. They ask us to attend their events and include us in their lives ... it’s truly a gift.”
Katie likes to keep her classroom respectful and lighthearted. The rules are simple: Always try your best and respect yourself and others. A stash of candy helps celebrate good days and small wins—keeping spirits and smiles on high beam. Perhaps one of her students said it best: “Everyone needs a Ms. Beamer in high school, and I’m so glad you’re mine.”

L IBERTY PREPARATORY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
AS LIBERTY PREP preps to welcome students back this fall, Amie reflects on a journey rooted in faith, family, and the belief that one determined person can truly make a difference.
on what mattered most. “Having children helped me become less selfish,” she says. “It forced me to analyze my priorities and be in control of my calendar.” That shift in perspective eventually changed the course of her career—and her community.
launching a multimillion-dollar campus improvement project which will add a lunchroom, STEM lab, science wing, updated elementary classroom building, and theatre enhancements. Currently in the fundraising stage, they hope to break ground next summer.
Amie, who grew up in Flint, Michigan, followed a corporate path after graduating from Michigan State University. A purchasing job brought her to North Carolina, where a fellow Spartan introduced her to her future husband, Doug. The two discovered a shared background—and even a surprising appearance of Doug in an old college photo of Amie’s—before launching a global business together in direct sales.
Looking for a faith-based educational option for her daughters, Amie discovered the University-Model®—a hybrid approach that combines classroom instruction with at-home learning under parental guidance. “I wanted to be involved in my daughters’ education, but not be their primary educator,” she explains. That vision became Liberty Prep, which opened in 2010 as Mooresville’s first private Christian school.
Now celebrating its 15th year, Liberty Prep has flourished under Amie’s leadership
What’s Amie’s secret to success? She smiles and answers simply: “Lots of deep breaths, prayer, and gratitude.” And much of that gratitude is directed at the staff and teachers at Liberty Prep. “There are no words for just how rare and amazing these people are,” she smiles. “They are all exceptionally gifted ... we are truly family. They aren’t just teaching lessons in a classroom; they’re building spaces where young minds can flourish, where faith and academics walk hand-in-hand, and where communities are strengthened—
Eventually leaving the corporate world, Amie discovered the freedom to refocus
and now boasts a beautiful 28-acre campus, a testament to how far the dream has come. Additionally, they are
one student, one family, and one school year at a time.”
“Some of life’s greatest lessons aren’t tucked inside textbooks; they’re tucked inside the moments that test and transform us.”
Every August, lockers slam, pencils sharpen, and parents slip love notes into lunchboxes—rituals that signal a fresh academic year. Yet the bell doesn’t only ring inside brick-andmortar schools. Sometimes it tolls in hospital corridors, chemo chairs, or any place where adversity rewrites the syllabus. That’s where I Iearned a hard-won degree in resilience, hope, and the art of living fully.
When I first heard the word cancer, terror drowned out every other thought. But somewhere between doctor visits and silent, tear-stained prayers, I realized I was sitting in a richer classroom than any I’d known. Cancer became my classroom. Every day was a lesson in letting go, holding on, and trusting God for the strength to keep moving. Each
infusion taught surrender, each setback drilled perseverance, and each sunrise proved that gratitude is a muscle worth exercising.
Those lessons birthed Crushing Chemo Chic®, my mission to help women thrive beyond diagnosis. Through coaching circles, affirmation journals, healing retreats, and simple spaces to be heard, I remind survivors-in-training that they are still whole, worthy, and wonderfully capable of rewriting the narrative. We trade fear for faith, victimhood for victory, and side effects for sidedoors into unexpected joy. Together we discover that the real curriculum is courage, community, and compassion for ourselves first, and then for the world.
Children, too, step quietly into life’s popquiz when a parent battles illness. Watching my niece navigate worry with wideeyed bravery inspired Healing Hugs: A Mother-Daughter Story of Love and Resilience. This picture book is a warm guide for little hearts. It turns sterile hospital rooms into storytelling sanctuaries where giggles bloom beside IV poles, and
bedtime prayers outshine fluorescent lights. Even in the hardest seasons, love can be the greatest lesson of all. Within its pages, kids learn that hope is a hug you can hold onto.
So while we applaud the remarkable educators shaping young minds this fall, let’s also honor the everyday professors: patients who model perseverance, caregivers who practice unconditional love, and families who choose joy amid jagged uncertainty. Whether your chalkboard today is a boardroom, a chemo wing, a minivan, or a kitchen table, know this: you are both student and teacher in the sprawling school of resilience.
As backpacks zip and buses rumble away, may we all keep returning to life’s deeper lessons—choosing beauty in broken places, whispering courage into fearful corners, and handing out grace like extra recess. Because when life becomes the teacher, hope is the homework, and every brave step, every shared story, every healing hug earns us credits in the one subject that matters most: living and loving well, no matter what.

MOST OF THE TALENT HERE IS POWERED BY WOMEN—SHARP , COMPASSIONATE , UNSTOPPABLE . WE JUST DO OUR PART .
STEP INSIDE LEAVITT ELITE INSURANCE ADVISORS and what may appear to be an ordinary office quickly reveals itself as something far more remarkable—a place where quiet heroics unfold daily. With over 80 percent of the team made up of women, this isn’t just a workplace; it’s a close-knit community built on resilience, purpose, and heart. Each woman brings a unique story, yet they move as one, working independently while supporting one another like family. Their clients become more than policies; they become part of that extended family, cared for with deep commitment and compassion.
Aswe spotlight two members here (April Helgeson and Lisa Houston), it is with profound recognition we celebrate all the incredible women who are leading with heart and protecting dreams.
“We’re just a tiny slice of an amazing pie,” Lisa says. “Most of the talent here is powered by women—sharp, compassionate, unstoppable. We just do our part.”
Lisa never planned to make insurance her life’s work, and she certainly didn’t anticipate doing it with a persona straight out of an action ick. But her nickname— “ e Insurance Bounty Hunter”—sums her up perfectly.
“I’m relentless about tracking down the right protection,” Lisa laughs. “It started out as a funny moniker, but it became a promise. I will nd the best coverage for you ... period.”
Lisa was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, and raised in North Carolina, where she built a career, a family, and a legacy of dependability. “I still say I’m a Michigander at heart, but North Carolina shaped me.”
Her journey into insurance began when her husband decided to start an agency and asked her to test the waters. “I jumped in—no lifejacket, no oaties—and I haven’t looked back. Every policy is a promise,” Lisa continues. “Handing a grieving spouse a check
so they can focus on healing instead of bills ... that’s the hardest, holiest part of my work. I always say, I’d rather bring a check than a casserole.”
Lisa starts each day the same way: “Before my feet hit the oor, I thank God for His many blessings.” She says her tombstone could simply read: She tried. “It began as a joke because my kids didn’t like my answers,” Lisa explains, “but it stuck because it’s true. I try with all I’ve got!”
Similarly, April Helgeson’s journey into insurance began not with a dream, but with her dad. “My father applied for a job he was underquali ed for,” she recalls, “but he told the hiring manager that his daughter was looking for work, too. She hired me temporarily, and I never left.”
AT
watched clients grow up, get their driver’s licenses, buy homes, and have families. It’s incredibly rewarding.”
April and Lisa are just two of the many women behind the success. eir stories full of grit, grace, and unwavering care mirror a greater truth about the company. “We are all strong, smart, and compassionate,” Lisa relays proudly. “We have each other’s backs, and we show up for our clients and each other every single day.”
Lisa Houston
Born and raised in Somerset County, New Jersey, April says growing up as “the poor kid in a wealthy town” taught her resilience and humility. “We had government cheese and donated clothes,” she shares. “It taught me to work harder, to be grateful, and to never forget where I came from.”
April’s introduction to insurance was humble, but she quickly fell in love with the pace, the challenge, and the opportunity to help others. Twenty- ve years later, April has built a career she’s proud of. “I love my team,” she smiles. “ ey are my family. I’ve
April echoes the sentiment: “I learn from everyone. It’s not just one person who inspires me. It’s all the people I encounter, at work and in the community. at’s what drives me ... to do good, to make a di erence, and to give back.”
Both women acknowledge the demands of the job, but neither regrets the path they’ve chosen. “ is work is emotional,” Lisa admits. “It’s not just numbers on paper; it’s people’s lives and livelihoods. When something bad happens, and you can tell a client, ‘You’re covered,’ that moment means everything.”
April Helgeson
At the heart of this amazing team of women, there is a shared belief: protect what matters and do it with heart. Because insurance isn’t just about risk. It’s about reassurance. It’s about showing people that, even when life gets stormy, someone’s there for you ... and these women show up. Fully. Fiercely. Every day ... leading with heart and protecting dreams. w

Open garage doors, attic hatches, and sunroom sliders let heat and humidity rush in. Keep doors and windows sealed during peak hours, and close curtains to block solar gain.

give your vents some breathing room
Furniture, rugs, and pet beds can block vents and restrict air ow. Take a quick walk through your home and make sure your vents are clear.
6 think ahead, not emergency
Don’t wait until your system fails. Preventive maintenance keeps you ahead of the breakdown, boosts e ciency, and buys time to plan if repairs or upgrades are needed.
Yes, most of us like it at 70° or cooler and that’s okay. Just know that dropping the thermostat lower doesn’t cool faster, it just makes your system run longer. Use blackout curtains, avoid the oven, and seal up air leaks to help your system out.

WE’RE USUALLY ALL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING WOMEN, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN, WE PASS THE MIC. In our column In His Own Words, we invite local men to share their stories, insights, and a bit of their personality. From doctors and dentists to entrepreneurs and realtors, these professionals are part of the fabric of our community—and they’ve got something to say. This month, meet Dr. Connor Zehak of Northcross Dental Care as he gives us a glimpse into his world.
I grew up in the Midwest and went to dental school in Arizona. at’s where I met my wife, Kayleigh— she’s also a dentist. We bonded over our shared passion for dentistry and a mutual love for dogs. Although we don’t have children yet, we do have two large dogs and ve birds, and that de nitely keeps us on our toes.
Family support is everything to me. My dad has been one of the most in uential people in my life, giving me a blueprint for what it means to truly care about your work and community. I try to carry that forward every day. When things get tough, I think about the example he set ... my wife, my pets, and knowing that every day is a chance to make a di erence—that’s what keeps me grounded and moving forward. Discipline, consistency, and good time management are important, but so is humility. You’ve got to be willing to keep learning and growing.
I’ve always admired the balance of science, skill, and personal connection that dentistry o ers. Also, my dad is a dentist, and I spent a lot of time in his o ce growing up. Watching the way he cared for his patients and built trust with them left a big impression on me. It was more than a job to him ... it was his purpose and passion. at made me want to follow in his footsteps. Starting out in practice came with its challenges, especially learning how to manage both clinical dentistry and the business side. I leaned heavily on advice from my dad and mentors, and through trial and error (and a lot of long days), I found my rhythm.
Grilling and smoking food is one of my favorite ways to relax. I also enjoy being outside with our dogs or working on home improvement projects. When it comes to travel, I’ve enjoyed seeing di erent parts of the country, but I really appreciate places that feel peaceful and close to nature. at’s part of what drew us to the Lake Norman area. We recently moved to Mooresville and are excited to call it home.
A quote that’s always stuck with me is: “Success is not nal, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” at quote reminds me that life and career are both marathons, not sprints. Keep showing up, keep going. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that sometimes the best opportunities come when you step out of your comfort zone. Trust your gut, lean on the people who’ve shaped you, and don’t be afraid to make bold moves. w

While outdoor entertaining is in the August air, it’s still super-hot this time of year! Be careful with your electronics and heed these safety tips: Avoid charging devices when it’s very hot (generates more heat); fully charge inside, then unplug for outside use.
Did your sunglasses take a beating this summer? Tighten wobbly shades with a drop of clear polish to temporarily hold things in place.
Beach towels/tarps, pool bags, and other outdoor summer gear should be cleaned and stored properly to avoid a messy, moldy discovery later. Toss in a cedar block, lavender sachet, or dryer sheets to keep things smelling fresh, reduce mustiness, and even repel some pests in the process!
Keep electronics dry and in full shade (umbrella, table, or sunshade)
Use a laptop stand or tray (avoid laps/cushions)
Avoid peak heat and have a fan directed at laptops, tv’s, etc.
Take breaks inside to cool off every hour (you and your devices)
GIVE YOUR PATIO PLANTS ONE LAST PUSH Deadhead and feed flowering plants for a late bloom burst. Move potted herbs into partial shade and start cutting and drying your favorites for fall cooking ... it’s almost chili time!
Before those perfect peaches or berries disappear, toss extras in the freezer for smoothies, popsicles, or jam later. Pro tip: freeze on a baking sheet first so they don’t clump together.
By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.
1 BUILD BOUNDARIES. Say no to events or people who drain you. Protect your energy.
2 CHECK IN WEEKLY. Ask yourself: How do I feel? What do I need? Rest, movement, alone time, etc.?
WHETHER YOU ARE A STUDENT, a parent, or somewhere in between, back-to-school season often feels like organized chaos disguised as a fresh start. It’s as if life is hitting “restart” on a fast-moving treadmill that never actually pauses. The rush of new schedules, supply lists, group chats, and emotional goodbyes (especially if you’re sending a child off to college) can leave everyone feeling overwhelmed. But, beneath the hustle, the start of the fall semester offers a quiet chance to pause and check in with yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Even if you’re excited about what’s ahead, you might arrive on campus feeling stretched thin or already behind before settling in. I’ve been there every August since freshman year. Now, as a senior, I’ve learned that preparing for the new school year isn’t just about buying your textbooks or planners, it’s about preparing yourself. This means more than setting goals or chasing productivity. It means paying attention to your whole self, checking in with your thoughts, fueling your body intentionally, and creating space to recharge your spirit.
College life pulls you in countless directions—assignments pile up, jobs demand your attention, and there’s constant pressure to be “doing enough” just to fit in. Everyone seems to juggle it all effortlessly, making you feel like you’re falling behind if you slow down. You wake up tired, run on caffeine and adrenaline, and crash too late, only to repeat the cycle. College isn’t just classes and coffee, with the occasional fun time. It’s a full balancing act of academic pressure, social expectations, work shifts, family updates, and the quiet weight of trying to look like you’ve got it all together. Some days it’s thrilling; others, overwhelming.
3 CREATE A CALMING SPACE. Let your room be a soft place to land, not stress.
4 REACH OUT. Vent to friends, text family, or talk to a counselor. Connections and having a support system are powerful.
What I’ve learned is this: being okay doesn’t mean having it all figured out. It means knowing when to slow down, reset, and care for yourself in ways that truly support your mind, body, and spirit. Here are some doable ways to stay grounded:

You’re not a machine, although it may feel like it, you’re a whole person. College challenges you, but it shouldn’t erase you. Staying okay doesn’t require perfection, just your presence. And presence starts with choosing to slow down, listen inward, and care for yourself because you matter. w
5 SCHEDULE JOY. Plan weekly doses of fun, walks, movies, and meals with friends. Don’t wait until you’re burned out.
