ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas An open door to all in need

A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

Dear Friends of Jewish Family Service,

We are SO grateful for you today - and every day. It seems like we say this every year, because it’s true, but the agency is growing at lightning speed. Before the pandemic, we were serving about 14,000 individuals per year, and then in 2020 as the pandemic began, 23,000 individuals turned to us. In 2021, services reached all-time records with 39,000 individuals served and this past year the agency assisted almost 30,000 individuals.

As JFS evolved to help where needed most, many of these individuals were provided food to prevent them from going hungry, employment support to help find new jobs after an unexpected layoff and emergency housing and utility assistance to prevent eviction. This is what we do at JFS. We help where needed most, and we respond as needs change.

For more than 70 years, JFS has met the evolving needs of our community. Since the agency’s inception, we have provided basic needs and counseling for those impacted or displaced by natural disasters like hurricanes, floods and tornadoes, supported thousands of individuals and families through the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, and have been a reliable resource for those experiencing a personal crisis, family struggles or career transition. With comprehensive resources for all ages, backgrounds, and incomes, we continue to provide our core services including play therapy for children, counseling for teens, individual, marital and family therapy, family violence intervention, career and financial coaching, older adult services, emergency assistance and, as of late, expanded access through our renovated food pantry. Most recently, our board approved the addition of medical services in 2023, adding depth to the services we provide to those in need.

Both JFS Dallas’ national accreditation by the Council on Accreditation and successful service outcomes underscore the quality of our effective coordinated whole-person care. We continue to maintain a 4-Star Charity Navigator rating, for 8 consecutive years, an honor that places JFS Dallas among the top four percent of nonprofits nationally. When you donate to our agency, we hope you know you are supporting a credible, responsible organization.

We hope you enjoy reading this report and reminiscing on the impact of all our efforts. Thank you for believing in our work, joining us on this journey, supporting our mission and helping MAKE MORE POSSIBLE for those in need.

Sincerely,

OUR MISSION

To provide effective and accessible, whole-person care that promotes lifelong self-sufficiency and well-being for the Greater Dallas community.

OUR VISION

Self-sufficiency and well-being for all.

OUR VALUES

WELCOMING

We are a welcoming community that fosters inclusivity and belonging.

COMPASSIONATE

We provide each client with compassionate care by respecting and addressing their individual needs.

DEDICATED

We are a team of dedicated professionals who provide the highest standard of excellence in service.

Our services and programs are built upon our core beliefs:

· Any of us might need help from time to time as we navigate life’s unexpected crises and challenging transitions.

· An individual’s emotional and physical well-being is the foundation for personal self-sufficiency, strong families, and meaningful social relationships.

· Each child’s physical, intellectual, and emotional potential can best be realized by growing up in a safe and nurturing environment.

· All adults want to support themselves, meet family needs, and contribute productively to their community.

· Older adults should have the option to remain in their own homes for as long as it is safe to do so.

FOOD PANTRY

RESILIENCY AND REGAINING STRENGTH

Jordan, a Food Pantry client this past year, is a father of premature twin babies that were in the ICU for months. His wife spent her days at the hospital while he worked part-time and tried to keep everything else afloat.

He shared several times that JFS had saved him when he didn’t know where to turn - the amount of food given and the diapers were huge helps to his family. Between the early birth of their babies and job loss due to pandemic restraints, they were getting further and further in debt. His primary goal was to continue to make mortgage payments, feed his family, and get back to a full-time salaried position where things could be more stable.

The monthly supply of food, along with diapers, wipes, and formula and the connection to our CFS department not only gave his family stability in short-term, but hope that tomorrow would be better. Over time, his babies and wife got stronger and we couldn’t be more proud of the progress they made.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Elizabeth started treatment related to panic attacks connected to some serious and sudden health issues. During treatment she also disclosed chronic feelings of hopelessness, past family violence, and current marital issues. She was connected to individual counseling, a Dialectical Behavior Group (DBT) group, and couples counseling. She actively engaged in treatment and the wrap around services over the last year. Elizabeth now reports having no panic attacks in several months and has come to a point of empowerment as a survivor of family violence. She is continuing to engage with couples counseling and is working on her chronic depression. She has shared that JFS has helped her to manage her stress and panic attacks in a healthy way and communicate her feelings better with her partner.

DREAM COURT FOR TEENS TO UTILIZE DURING THERAPY SESSIONS

At the beginning of the Fiscal Year, August 2021, clients, clinicians, and community members alike gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony of Jewish Family Service of Dallas's new Dream Court, generously donated by Nancy Lieberman Charities and the David family. This court has served as a safe place and therapeutic option for pre-teens and teens to utilize during counseling sessions at Jewish Family Service. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others.

REVAMPING THE CLINICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Clinical Internship Program is designed to improve Masters or PhD students' professional skills by providing direct and indirect client services, attending additional in-house training, and working under close supervision of a licensed mental health practitioner. Students have the opportunity to work with diverse populations as well as a variety of clinical concerns. Our clinical team is proud to mentor and train new clinicians as they prepare to enter the counseling field. Since re-vamping the program, interns have allowed us to provide services to 70 additional clients.

To attract some of the best candidates, we have partnered with Chicago School of Professional Psychology, SMU, and UTA over the last year. We are looking forward to continuing our partnerships and growth of the program with interns from UNT, Colorado Christian University, and Springfield College as well.

To learn more or inquire about becoming a clinical intern in the future, email Sally Neeley, LCSW-S, Clinical Administrator at sneeley@jfsdallas.org.

TRAININGS HELD IN THE COMMUNITY

As a response to the Beth Israel hostage case Yaffa Podbilewicz-Weinberg, Ph.D. and Leah Heiman, LMSW hosted a community-wide webinar on ‘Stress or Trauma: Building Resilience’. 69 participants learned how to build resilience after a traumatic event, gain tools to better manage stress, better prepare for challenging times, identify the signs and symptoms of stress & trauma, know when to seek help, and access resources and referrals.

In addition, Ariela Goldstein, LCSW, Senior Director, Clinical Services Emeritus and Terah Culp, LPC, provided presentations on ‘How to Prevent and Treat Sexual Abuse’ and about ‘Trauma and How The Body Keeps the Score’ and more. For questions regarding hosting future trainings, email Sally Neeley, LCSW-S, Clinical Administrator at sneeley@jfsdallas.org.

JFS DALLAS PROVIDES SERVICES AT NEW JUBILEE CLINIC

A project years in the making, we are proud to partner with Jubilee Park & Community Center and Parkland Health to expand access to healthcare and wellness services in Southeast Dallas. The new clinic offers primary care, dental and mental health services for people of all ages.

“Five years ago, JFS initiated a meaningful partnership with Jubilee Park aiming to promote affordable and culturally responsive mental health services to the community. As part of the impact of this partnership, the community has become more comfortable with counseling services,” said Gustavo Bárcenas, Ph.D.,

LPC, RPT, JFS Offsite Clinical Program Manager. “We are looking forward to working alongside our partners to continue normalizing mental health and wellness in this community.”

The clinic is projected to serve 3,500 patients in its first year and close to 7,000 patients per year after. This partnership and coordinated approach will directly address this issue and provide a best practice solution that will make this community and these families emotionally and physically stronger as a result.

OLDER ADULTS

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Toyota Motor North America awarded a grant to JFS to transport seniors and people with disabilities to medical appointments and provide access to social services.

Limited finances, location, and disabilities often make it difficult for the elderly to access transportation services, contributing to a decline in quality of life. The program has helped clients meet their needs while improving isolation. They have rave reviews and report improved quality of life. Since we received the Handicap Accessible van in December 2021 our driver, Shelita Warner, has helped with approximately 75 rides per month.

11

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR CARE SERVICES

During the past two years, we have been able to help 96 Holocaust survivors in the area. We have provided information and referral, comprehensive case management, individually tailored psychological care as well as support for caregivers.

Our range of care has expanded dramatically by providing access to virtual senior centers, Uniper technology, expanding our Volunteer Friendly Visitor program and Pen Pal program. We have touched the lives of many who have needed our presence while maintaining the existing access to support for medical, legal, and financial assistance to those who qualify.

CONTINUED SUCCESS OF UNIPER TECHNOLOGY FOR SENIORS

Mrs. Ahuva* is a 89 year old Holocaust survivor from Poland who lives in a senior housing community with 12 hours per day homecare since having a stroke a few years ago. The stroke impaired her speech severely affecting her ability to communicate on the phone and limiting our ability to safely provide much needed psychological care. Uniper has provided the means to implement a variety of interventions opening a window for non-verbal communication that eases understanding. As a result, she has learned skills to manage sleep problems and worry and the weekly sessions on Uniper have reduced depression. Her aide facilitates her access to various programs that provide engagement and entertainment. Even her Friendly Visitor volunteer, a retired speech pathologist, uses Uniper to connect with her weekly.

Mental Health Counseling

THREE YEARS OF SERVING ROSELAND

The Roseland Counseling Clinic from JFS has continued to thrive in providing and offering mental health counseling and supportive services to the Roseland community in the year 2021-2022. There was strong participation and coordination in a variety of community events and outreach presentations that served to strengthen the relationship with the community residents and partners. This included providing workshops on Self-Care to teachers in Spence Middle School, and to a group of parents from the community.

A workshop on Child Abuse and Trauma was also offered to the teachers of Roseland Head Start of Greater Dallas. Another important initiative was the launching of a series of parent forums dedicated to

INTRODUCTION OF TWO NEW SUPPORT GROUPS

The Priya Support Group is open to women experiencing primary and secondary fertility challenges and helps reduce anxiety, acceptance in the moment, and hope for the future. We share and develop coping skills while “waiting” and work on increasing our well-being.

STAFF LEADING BY EXAMPLE

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas is committed to creating and promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace that is representative of the community we serve. Our goal is to ensure a welcoming environment for all members of our staff, board, volunteers, and clients, while continuing to honor the Jewish Values that our agency was founded on – Tikkun Olam (to repair the world), Tzedek (fairness), Chesed (acts of kindness), and Kavod (respect).

This commitment strengthens our ability to hire, retain and grow our greatest assets – our employees – and it allows us to fulfill our mission to provide effective, accessible, and comprehensive whole-person care that promotes lifelong self-sufficiency and well-being for the Greater Dallas community.

Tactics:

• Intentional recruiting and hiring to ensure staff diversity.

• Holding quarterly trainings to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion are well-understood and part of the cultural framework of the organization.

• Ensuring cross-functional or ad hoc teams are diverse and representative of the population we serve

• Holding regular social events (online or in person) that will foster curiosity and new understanding about other religions, cultures, abilities, and life circumstances.

20 YEARS OF POWER, INFLUENCE, AND IMPACT OF WOMEN

OVER $5 MILLION RAISED TOGETHER

This year’s Woman to Woman luncheon marked the 10th biennial celebration of the event. Since the inception of the Woman to Woman Luncheon in 2004, JFS has raised over $5 million and grown from serving 7,400 individuals to more than 39,000 individuals in 2021.

Woman to Woman raised record breaking donations this year, and received more corporate sponsors than ever before. With an increasing demand for effective, accessible, and comprehensive mental health and social services, the money raised from this event is being used to hire additional intake specialists who can meet the needs of the community in order to reduce the waitlist for JFS services.

The Luncheon would not be possible without the tireless efforts of Sustaining Chair, Linda Garner, and Founding Chair, Ethel Zale, as well as our 31 honorary chairs working alongside JFS staff to make this event so successful over the last 20 years.

For the first time in this forum, we celebrated our 26 interns and 14 host agencies for all their achievements this summer at our End of Summer Event in July. Learn more about the program at jfsdallas.org/volunteer/internship.
